THE FINISHING TOUCH
Whether you choose ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ window treatments, make your room sing this spring!BY MARY-ANNE OLMSTED-KOHLS Special to Homestyle
After the doldrums of winter, spring brings with it a sense of renewal. Part of that is switching things up in your home. It may include decluttering, rearranging furniture, painting an accent wall or adding new decor such as artwork, plants, candles, flower arrangements or throw pillows.
While all of these actions are important in the overall look of your room, oftentimes the window treatments are an afterthought.
“That’s sad,” (that people don’t think about window treatments in their beginning remodel or build),” said Dawn Ashburn, Interior Views window treatment professional. “Especially with motorized shades. It’s wise to plan ahead on these as the wiring can be done during construction.”
Ashburn has specialized in window treatments since 1991. Her van, which sports her business name — Interior Views — is a recognizable vehicle around the area with its bold graphics of window shades. Ashburn takes pride in her “office on wheels,” which makes it convenient having everything she needs in one place.
“I primarily do in-home consultations and installations,” she said. “There are window covering displays at Factory Direct in Hutchinson of all my design ideas for people to see what’s trending, but most of what I do is done at the client’s home.”
An in-person meeting allows Ashburn to listen to her client’s needs and interests, as well as analyze the possibilities with the window(s) and coordinate with other room decor.
“I have samples we can put up to your window to see how they look,” she said. “I will also get exact measurements on site to place the order properly.”
WINDOW TREATMENT TRENDS
Ashburn said there is a wide array of products on the market to stylize a window. The types of treatments are broken out into two categories: “hard,” which consist of mini blinds, cellular shades, sheers and vertical blinds and “soft,” which are those made of fabric-like draperies, panels, valances and Roman shades. Cordless

products — pushed for child safety — are being promoted. These offer a neater, sleeker look to the treatment, too.
High-tech living is here to stay with remote controls and apps available to operate devices ranging from security cameras and doorbells to TVs, lights and appliances. It’s not surprising motorization has come to window shades, too.
Motorization changes the dynamics of a room. No more stretching and reaching. For tall windows, a motorized option allows using remote control to adjust your shades. This can be in the form of a remote control device such as what you use for your television or you can download an app to your smartphone. The luxury of this option is that when the phone is connected to WiFi, the person can operate their window coverings anywhere in the world.
Other scenarios and conveniences for motorized shades, for instance, include when leaving for work, a person can close all the coverings with a press of a button. For those who like having windows around their bathtub in the master suite, they can close all of them at once while the water is running with no worries.
Motorized shades can be installed in already established rooms. For these, there are rechargeable motors that are plugged into a charger once a year. Otherwise, the system is cordless the rest of the time.
With new construction, it’s important to consider this type of treatment while the home is being built.
“Wiring can be brought right to the window,” Ashburn explains. “It’s something that should be incorporated with the build.”
Trends in the soft treatments are simple, clean, minimalist panels or padded cornices that frame the window.
“Highlighting the fabric is more important than the design,” Ashburn said. “Fabrics have gotten expensive. Beauty and texture of the fabric are stressed more than volume.”
Texture is popular. Natural fibers such as linen, bamboo and cotton

in neutral tones are regularly seen. Color trends for both hard and soft window treatments are warmer greys, something that has a hint of brown in it.
“We’re going away from the true grays and the stark whites,” Ashburn said. “More color — like your water colors and florals in fabrics — is something else we’re seeing more of.”
WHY WORK WITH A DESIGNER?
A homeowner can go online or select shades at one of the “big box stores,” but having a specialist like Ashburn come into your home offers direction, customization and precise sizing to fit the window.
“With soft treatments, you can only select something in the perimeters (size and colors) of the ready-made,” Ashburn explained. “With the custom option, there are hundreds of fabric selections to choose from.”
“I can show you many more lining, style and embellishment options,” she continues. “I can help you find the hardware — how to pick a rod, for instance — and we provide installation, so the product is placed the way it should be.”
Ashburn also offers a wider selection of hard treatments. A benefit of her more than 30 years of experience is if there are problems or warranty issues, she takes care of them.
“I make contacts to help solve or rectify any issue that happens with any of my products,” Ashburn emphasized. “I take full responsibility for taking care of it.”
There are other aspects to quality window treatments Ashburn wants homeowners to consider.
There’s no shortage of fabrics to choose from when considering customized window treatments. To get an idea of what’s available, Dawn Ashburn, Interior Views window treatment professional, can do an inhome consultation or you can stop by Factory Direct in Hutchinson and look at displays of what’s trending.
“Besides providing privacy, they add safety, savings in heating and cooling bills, and add value to your home,” she said.
Along with the savings accrued from good window treatments, the government is offering a federal tax credit to encourage homeowners to make eco-friendly choices by upgrading to energy-efficient ones. Maximum credit allowed is $1,200. This
opportunity continues through 2032.
Ashburn feels homeowners should look to window treatments as investments to their home. Quality ones are a great way to add visual appeal, as well as save money. Ashburn’s experience will help guide clients through the process.
“I will work with my client, so they achieve the best product for their window,” she said.
How to maintain a healthier home on a budget
Check with your insurance agent to find out how healthy home choices can save you money
Living healthily remains a primary concern for many today, with homeowners looking to make home improvements with an emphasis on the health benefits of living in an environmentally friendly space.
“When it comes to home improvement, eco-friendly choices can be budget-friendly,” said Bonnie Lee, vice president of property claims at Mercury Insurance. “Healthy home choices, especially for large renovations, can bring your homeowner cost down and save you money on insurance too.”
The journey to a healthier home begins by identifying areas needing regular maintenance and determining which environmentally friendly products can replace current ones. Here’s a roundup of beneficial and feasible home enhancements:
BREATHE EASIER WITH CLEAN AIR
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, states that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. The air filters in your home’s heating and cooling equipment weed out contaminants such as dust and pet dander; however, a dirty filter hampers their efficiency. Regularly cleaning or changing these filters, especially HEPA filters that cost as little as $30, can ensure clean air.
A costless preventive measure is
to maintain the proper functioning of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home. Fires and carbon monoxide poisoning are more likely during winter when homes are typically heated, making detector maintenance an important step.
ENSURING SAFE WATER
Water filters offer a health-centric and budget-conscious upgrade to homes. Filter pitchers start from as low as $20, and there are more upscale alternatives available like under-sink, countertop or faucet-mounted systems.
Water leak detection devices present another home improvement avenue. These systems alert homeowners when a leak is detected and can automatically shut off the water system if a significant issue exists. Mercury Insurance as well as other insurance companies offer a related discount to eligible homes equipped with these devices. Ask your agent for details.
GREEN AND EFFECTIVE HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIES
Attention has shifted due to concerns over the composition of traditional cleaning products, paints, flooring and construction materials. Many homeowners now prefer environmentally friendly alternatives. Look for biodegradable products based on renewable resources. When painting

the walls of your home, look for volatile organic compounds (VOC)-free options or those that are Green Seal or GreenGuard certified.
When it comes to appliances, aim for LEED-certified or STAR-rated products for lower energy usage and eligibility for an insurance discount for green homeowners. For flooring, consider alternatives like unfinished hardwood, stone or concrete, and carpets made from natural fibers. Look for non-toxic adhesives to further limit chemical exposure.
For building materials such as
drywall and insulation, opt for GreenGuard-certified products to avoid hazardous chemicals.
Adopting routine maintenance and home improvements can foster a healthier living environment and offer financial rewards. For instance, ask your insurance agent if a green home insurance discount is available to homeowners with a certification from either the U.S. Green Building Council LEED or the National Association of Home Builders Green Building Guidelines, or NAHB.

MOVING ON UP!
My mom is on the move again. At 91, Marianne Johnson is heading uptown to Prince of Peace Retirement Living
After 13 happy years at the Village Cooperative in Hutchinson, my mom — Marianne Johnson — made the decision to follow her lifetime friends and move uptown to Prince of Peace Retirement Living.
Her reasons included, the location. It’s across the street from her church — Peace Lutheran. She liked that an optional noon meal was available Monday through Friday. At 91, she’s not much into cooking anymore. Not surprising considering she has made and served more than 90,000 meals during her lifetime so far. She also liked the option of health care ala carte services. She may not need them, but it’s good to know they are available. And, of course, her friends.
“It was time,” she said. “I’ve been so happy here and I’ll miss everyone so much.”
The best thing about my mom is that she’s always made her own decisions about moving. I am grateful for that. Not everyone is so lucky. Some folks just won’t leave their family home until it’s too late. Remember, it’s much easier when you are in control of your own destiny. If a health crisis intervenes, you no longer will have the luxury of choice. Others will make decisions for you.
I still remember having breakfast with my mom years ago when she announced she wanted to give up the house and move to the Village Cooperative. She was lucky because at the time, the exact apartment she wanted was available. When she no longer wanted to live in a two-bedroom unit, she announced she was ready to downsize to a one-bedroom. And again, one became available. And now another apartment is ready and waiting for her.
As my mom aged, we talked about what’s next. We didn’t really know. Would it be Ecumen Oaks
& Pines, Woodstone Senior Living Community or Harmony River Living Center? We had never really considered Prince of Peace because we had “heard” it was expensive. It took my niece, Rebecca, to ask: How expensive? Of course, we couldn’t answer that because we didn’t really know. She dived into it and discovered it wasn’t a lot more than my mom was paying at the Village Cooperative. That was a game-changer.
I can’t say enough good things about Stacie Jurek, property manager at the co-op. She’s always
been super helpful and right there with answers to our multitude of questions.
MAKING IT HAPPEN
Once we found out Prince of Peace was an option for my mom, we had to find out the process. We reached out to Destini Doring, executive director. Like Stacie at the Village Cooperative, Destini was super helpful and answered all our questions — and we had many!
First and foremost, you have to add your name
to the waiting list. I can’t stress this enough. If you’re considering a move in the future, check to see if there is a waiting list at your preferred facility. The Village Cooperative, for instance, has a waiting list of 58 names. While that may seem daunting, many people will pass on moving when called. It might be because they’re not ready or they don’t like the unit that’s available. Their refusal becomes an opportunity for someone else. My mom is moving to Prince of Peace because the people on the list before her passed on the unit. She lucked out. You just never know.
Prince of Peace has a total of 49 independent living apartments — 37 are one bedroom and 12 are two bedrooms. My mom wanted a onebedroom and put her name on the list a little more than six months ago. We prepared ourselves for a long wait. We were totally blown away when Destini called in late January with the good news that an apartment was available.
It was perfect timing because
my mom had been lamenting the anticipated long waiting time and that “she’d be long gone before an apartment was available.” My sister, Lynn, and niece Betsy, and I had the privilege of giving her the news via the iPhone Facetime app, which meant we could see her face and she could see ours. We wanted to see her reaction. It was funny because when I gave her the news, she didn’t react at first. I think it was a shock and it took a bit for it to sink it!
“I don’t think I’ll sleep a wink tonight,” she said at the time.
Excited, you bet!
Like Stacie, I can’t say enough good things about Destini Doring. Moving can be scary. You’re leaving what you know to face the unknown. She made the process easy, understandable and fun. Thank you!

it also meant sorting, discarding, donating and packing her stuff. I think it should be mandatory to move every five years because it’s the best way to get us to downsize.
My mom loves books, holiday decorations and dishes. So she was faced with keeping her favorites and passing along the rest. There was a time when parents passed along their belongings to their children, but that isn’t as true today as it once was.
As adult children, we’ve collected our own piles of stuff. There’s no need to add more to it! And when it comes to grandchildren and great-grandchildren many prefer a minimalistic lifestyle, so they don’t want their grandparents’ stuff either.
It’s sad, but true. So another word to the wise, if you think your children will automatically want your things, ask them! You might be
surprised or even disappointed by their response. Yes, they may take a few family heirlooms, but don’t count on them taking everything you’ve been gifted from the past 100 years.
Moving is a pain. There’s no way around it. Fortunately, Hutchinson has a couple of moving companies that can make it relatively painless. We have used All Mighty Movers in the past and will again this time around. The process starts by giving Wade Rolf, owner, a call. He’ll stop by and give you an estimate of what it will cost to move your stuff. He can also give you tips on ways to save money, as well as what services they offer. We’ve had them do big jobs and small ones. The headline on the company’s website — No moving job too big or too small — is true.
If you’ve got a lot of stuff to sell, consider the Leader and Leader Shopper want ads, as well as social media. It seems to work for others.
If you’ve got belongings to giveaway, there are options

available: Twice As Nice, the Hutchinson Health Auxiliary, Goodwill, Epilepsy Foundation and the Thrift Shop of Common Cup Ministry in Glencoe are some that come to mind. Also, if you’re discarding clothes, head to the green metal containers around town to donate to the Disabled American Veterans, or DAV, who use the donated items to raise money for veteran services. All Mighty Movers will also dispose, donate and recycle your stuff. Ask Wade for a cost estimate.
Last but not least is cleaning. Each facility has its own rules that govern moving out. Typically, the tenant is required to leave the apartment in move-in condition. You can do this yourself or ask Stacie or Destini for recommendations. They have a list of cleaners, painters, carpet cleaners and so on, so just ask.
With her bags packed and ready to go, Marianne is set to embrace life’s next adventure at Prince of Peace. May the force be with her.

Decoding HVAC jargon
Key terms every homeowner should know to communicate with contractors
Navigating the HVAC industry can be perplexing, with its unfamiliar acronyms and specialized jargon. When homeowners better understand HVACindustry key words, it aids in confident purchasing decisions, and also helps homeowners to better communicate with contractors.
The following is a list of commonly used HVAC-industry terms that homeowners can benefit from knowing.
A2L/Refrigerant: Refrigerant is the liquid used to absorb and transfer heat from one part of the home comfort system to another. It’s important that refrigerant levels be properly maintained — neither too high nor too low. Newer to use within the U.S. air conditioning sector, A2L is a group of refrigerants with a lower toxicity and flammability rating compared to A2 or A3 refrigerants. A2Ls have emerged as a replacement for older, high-impact refrigerants. It is anticipated that A2L refrigerants will be required in 2025.
Air Handler: An air handler is the part of an HVAC system that circulates conditioned air throughout the home.
Furnace: A furnace heats the inside of a home. It uses natural or liquified petroleum (LP) gas, instead of refrigerant, to heat the air inside the home.
BTU: British Thermal Unit. The amount of heat required to raise or lower the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Understanding BTU allows homeowners to determine the heating or cooling capacity required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, ensuring the HVAC system is adequately sized for the living space.
Condensing Unit: Condensing units are found outside of the home. The unit is connected to the indoor

unit, either an air conditioner or heat pump, with tubing to carry refrigerant, which is used to transfer heat. To cool your home, a condenser removes heat from indoor air. To heat your home, it brings natural warmth from outdoor air inside your home. A heat pump can also heat your home.
Ratings: The higher the following ratings, the more efficient the unit.
EER2: The updated metric for Energy Efficiency Ratio, formerly known as EER. The ratio of the cooling capacity of the air conditioner or heat pump in BTUs per hour to the total electrical input in watts. This measure is determined by comparing test units to the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) specifications.
HSPF2: The updated metric for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, formerly known as HSPF. It measures the efficiency of the heating portion of a heat pump.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, formerly known as SEER. It is used to express the efficiency of an air conditioner or a heat pump in cooling mode. Similar to miles per gallon in a car, a higher SEER2 number indicates a more efficient unit.
Residential Packaged Unit: Equipment in which all heating and cooling components are located in one cabinet. Installed either beside or on top of a home or business.
Split System: A home comfort system that uses an indoor and an outdoor component to deliver comfortable air to a living environment. This may involve a combination of elements such as the following: a condensing unit located outside, air handler or furnace positioned indoors. In the case of a system incorporating a gas furnace, an evaporator coil inside the home is also utilized.
Stage Systems: HVAC systems
designed with various operational stages, including single-stage (on/ off), two-stage (two levels of heating or cooling capacity), or multi-stage (variable speed) confi gurations, enabling them to adjust heating or cooling output to meet comfort preferences while maximizing energy effi ciency in diverse conditions.
Zone/Zoning: A home may be divided into several different areas, or zones, to better control the temperature. The process of dividing a home into different zones is called zoning.
Knowing the basic terminology, homeowners can seek better optimization of HVAC system performance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of trusted contractors. Effective communication with these experts holds the key to precise assessments, improved energy efficiency, and adherence to safety and compliance standards.

Clean smarter, not
Parties, family gatherings, time with friends and the occasional surprise guest — life is full of fun get-togethers and reasons to celebrate. While there’s always much to look forward to, cleaning your home might not be among them.
Tidying your house can be a lot of work. When you need your home to look its best for a big event, small gathering or just an unexpected guest, a quick clean with minimal effort can make all the difference. Here are a few proven tips and tricks to save time by cleaning smarter, not harder.
Tip 1: Use multitasking cleaners to save time
You don’t need a cabinet overflowing with cleaning solutions. Choose multitasking, all-purpose cleaning options such as Bona, Lysol Clean Fresh, Method, Mrs. Meyer’s and so on that clean a myriad of surfaces, including stainless steel, glass, ceramic, granite and stone. You can quickly tackle many tasks in your home.
Tip 2: Create clutter bins for quick cleans
One way to help cut clutter is by creating a bin system to quickly tidy a space. In each room have a small basket or bin handy where you can toss in items that need to be put away in a hurry. This helps clear spaces, especially when time is running short. You can put the bin into a closet to tend to later or assign the bin to a family member to put items away while you focus on another task.
Tip 3: Make it a group activity
Recruit the family to pitch in and help. Assign tasks, crank up the music and get moving. Working
together can be fun, plus you’ll get more done in less time.
Tip 4: Use a grab-and-go mobile cleaning caddy
When you only have a few minutes, a well-stocked plastic caddy can be a life-saver. Pack your caddy with your go-to favorites including Green Guard Certified, USDA Biobased and EPA Safer Choice cleaners (for a list of products visit: www.epa.gov/saferchoice/ products) to ensure safe ingredients are used around your home. Add in items you find useful such as microfiber cloths, paper towels and rubber gloves. This way, when you get that last-minute call or text, you’re ready for a quick clean before guests arrive.
Tip 5: Don’t worry, enjoy
Spending time with family and friends is meant to be less about cleaning the house and more about enjoying your guests. While you might notice the few crumbs on the floor or dust on a shelf, there’s a good chance your guests won’t. Focus on cleaning the high visibility areas, surfaces and floors while reducing clutter to get the most impact, especially when you’re short on time. Let the rest go and enjoy your time together.
In just a few minutes, it’s easy to make your home guest-ready. Remember, it’s about spending time with loved ones, so stress less, enjoy your home and embrace the opportunity to be together.

Americans reveal how they feel about living in small spaces
When it comes to the home, bigger doesn’t always mean better.
A new survey from Duck brand, which offers products that provide simple, imaginative and helpful solutions for a variety of tasks around the home, discovered that more than half of Americans living in a small space say they feel cozy and comfortable as opposed to cramped.
“We often assume that a larger home is the most desirable, but that’s not always the case,” says Chaffy Assad, product manager at Shurtape Technologies LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “In fact, nearly half of the survey respondents enjoy living in a small space, which most defined as a two-bedroom home or smaller.”
A more intimate space offers many benefits:
61% say it’s easier to clean,
54% say it costs less and helps save money and
52% say it’s easier to maintain.
Additionally, 57% plan to continue living in their home for the foreseeable future.
While there are many benefits to tinier homes, there are some challenges to living with less space. The biggest downside: 59% of Americans say is the lack of storage, with 48% of people feeling it’s harder to keep small spaces clean and organized compared to larger spaces.
Which areas prove to create the biggest cleaning conundrums? The kitchen ranks No. 1 as the hardest room to keep neat and tidy, with the living room a close second, followed by the bedroom in third. The belongings that are the most difficult to make space for are cookware, bags, shoes and gym equipment.
That being said, Americans are good at finding ways to make the most of their home by keeping clutter to a minimum and getting creative with
organizing, the survey finds.
“No matter how limited your space is, there is always a way to maximize it,” Assad adds. “Making minor and affordable changes, like mounting removable hooks on the wall, easily adds extra storage to hang items such as cooking utensils or a purse, while installing shelf liner on kitchen shelves or in bathroom drawers protects surfaces and makes it simple to wipe up spills or messes.”

5 things to look for when buying a new stove
Ready to upgrade your kitchen range? Think about your cooking needs and kitchen design
Choosing the right slide-in range, also known as a stove, is essential for any home chef, and yours should not only cater to your cooking needs, but also complement your kitchen design.
“Navigating the many slide-in range options available today can feel daunting. That’s why it’s important to identify your must-have features before making a purchase,” says Peter Weedfald, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Sharp Home Electronics Company of America.
Not sure where to start? This range-purchasing guide offers five important factors to consider:
1. Size. A standard 30-inch slide-in range is a great option for most homes. If you’re looking for more cooking surface however, scale up to a 36-inch model. There are also 24-inch options for compact kitchens. Before making any purchase, measure the space to ensure the unit will fit, and that you can open the door.
2. Cooktop Surface and Fuel Source. There are three main cooktop surfaces to choose from: gas, radiant (electric) and induction. This decision can be influenced by the power source supply in your kitchen. If you have a gas line, you could choose any of the three, as long as there is also electric connectivity. If you don’t, consider a radiant or induction slide-in range. If you love the power from the open flame of a gas cooktop but desire the cooking capabilities of electric ovens, you can narrow your search to dual ovens. Helpful hint: The cooking power measurement will indicate whether you’re dealing with gas or electricity. Gas ranges use BTUs (British Thermal Units) and electric ranges measure power output in watts.
3. Capacity. The interior capacity is the space within the range’s cavity. This is the oven. Knowing your cooking habits can help guide you in the right direction. While a standard slide-in range often offers enough capacity for an average-sized family, if you’re prone to entertaining crowds, a larger capacity such as 6.1 or 6.3 cubic feet may better suit you. If you find yourself often preparing food at two different temperatures and cooking times, a dual oven may be your best bet.
4. Finish. Whether you’re curating your kitchen piece by piece or all at once, choose an exterior finish that fits your vision. Check out the oven’s interior cavity as well. You can make a statement with an unexpected pop of color here! The Sharp 30-inch Electric Convection Slide-in Range with Air Fryer offers a sleek edge-to-edge black glass exterior paired with a cobalt blue interior. If you prefer a more neutral, toned-down feel, keep it classic with a black or gray cavity.
5. Oven Features. When prioritizing features, consider your cooking habits and needs. If counter space is a priority, consider combinations such as the convection slide-in range with air fryer. It’s one less thing to take up your precious counter space.
“When curating your dream kitchen, the ultimate goal is finding a range that looks great in your space and can help you bring your culinary creations to life,” recommends Weedfald.

5 ways to transform your space
Small changes can bring new life to your home
Looking ahead can inspire dreams and ideas for exciting ways to transform your home — but it can also feel daunting to take on a list of new projects. The good news is you don’t need a total remodel to get the home you want, and even small changes can bring new life to your home.
Whether you’re craving a complete transformation or just a few impactful changes, here are some specific approaches to enhance any room in your home:
SHED SOME NEW LIGHT
Lighting isn’t just functional; it’s a mood maker, a style statement. This year, embrace the elegance of recessed lighting. These fixtures blend seamlessly into your ceiling, offering a sleek, modern look that opens up any room. Imagine soft, ambient light that enhances your living space’s warmth and character.
Recessed lighting isn’t just for living rooms; it can transform kitchens, bedrooms, and even bathrooms into sophisticated spaces. Plus, it’s surprisingly versatile — dimmable options can switch your room from a bright, energetic workspace to a cozy, intimate nook in seconds.
You don’t need a total remodel to get the home you want, and even small changes can bring new life to your home. New floors can make all the difference, as well as updating fi xtures, adding contemporary throw pillows and other enhancements.
START FROM THE BOTTOM UP
Floors are the unsung heroes of home design. They set the stage for your entire decorating scheme. So if you really want to reset the vibe of your home, consider starting with fresh hardwood flooring.
“Few other investments and home improvement projects can refresh and revive your home like solid hardwood floors,” said Jen Meska, director of merchandising for LL Flooring. “Hardwood floors are a timeless home décor choice that bring warmth, luxury and comfort underfoot and are built to last generations.”
CREATE AN ACCENT WALL
An accent wall is like the cherry on top of your interior design. It’s a statement, a conversation starter. This year, transform a plain wall into a stunning focal point. Whether you choose a bold paint color, striking wallpaper, or even a textured material like wood or stone, an accent wall adds depth and personality to any room. It’s the perfect opportunity to express your creativity and individuality. Plus, it’s a relatively simple and cost-effective project that can have a dramatic impact on your space’s overall look and feel.
REFRESH YOUR FIXTURES
Sometimes, the smallest changes make the biggest difference. Updating fixtures and hardware is a quick, easy and affordable way to give your home a modern facelift. Swap outdated cabinet knobs, drawer pulls, light switches and faucet handles for something fresh and contemporary.
These tiny details can tie a room together, complementing your overall design theme. Whether you opt for sleek, minimalist designs or something more ornate and eye-catching, new fixtures and hardware can breathe new life into every corner of your home.
REORGANIZE AND DECLUTTER
Embrace the new year with a clean slate by reorganizing and decluttering your home. A well-organized space not only looks better but also improves functionality and reduces stress. Start by sorting through your belongings, keeping only what you love and use. Then, invest in smart storage solutions that keep your space tidy and your items easily accessible. Remember, decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of things — it’s about creating a more peaceful and harmonious environment where you can truly relax and enjoy your home.
Transforming your home is about making small changes that have a big impact. When creating your project wish list, keep these design tips in mind to transform your home into the sanctuary of your dreams.

Make a great first impression with these 10 affordable tips for your home’s exterior
Your home’s first big impression is its curb appeal, so if your place is in need of some sprucing up, you may wonder how you can make some updates without breaking the bank.
These 10 ideas are easy on budgets, but they can also make a big impact on your home’s exterior image.
1. Paint your front door. As long as your front door is in good condition, there’s no need to replace it completely. A fresh coat of paint can instantly update your home’s facade. Go bold or stick with a classic hue — it’s all up to you.
2. Dress up the windows. Add character and charm by enhancing your front windows. You might add wooden shutters, window box planters or both. Also look at the trim around
the windows. If it’s chipped and peeling, adding a fresh coat of paint doesn’t just look nice, it can protect your windows from damage, too.
3. Clean up flower beds. An unkempt flower bed can drag down an otherwise stunning home. Keep beds tidy and vegetation trimmed, even during the offseason. Watch for weeds and replenish mulch or rock ground cover as needed to keep the beds looking healthy and inviting.
4. Install new lighting. Replacing outdated light fixtures can give your exterior an instant upgrade. There’s no right or wrong style; just choose a color and look that matches the rest of your design.
5. Replace worn welcome mats. A cheerful mat at your front door can be an inviting sight for visitors, but those mats inevitably wear with time, and what was once bright and charming becomes dingy and dull. A new mat can help bring back that cheery entry you once cherished.
6. Pressure wash the drive and walk. Over time, driveways and sidewalks collect an incredible amount of grime. Pressure washing not only eliminates the filth, but the clean surfaces also add to your home’s visual appeal.
7. Add new vegetation. Landscaping is a relatively inexpensive way to introduce more personality to a yard. Aim for a mix of pretty and practical, such as some low flowering bushes and some trees or bushes that offer privacy and shade.
8. Keep up with basic maintenance. When your home is in poor repair, it shows. Pay attention to bent or rusting gutters, imperfections in the roof and other maintenance matters that aren’t just aesthetic; left unrepaired, they can also result in major damage.
9. Pay attention to details. Functional items such as the mailbox might not seem like much of a design element, but these small details can be a big distraction if they’re not in good condition. Update or replace as needed to keep your aesthetic in sync.
10. Add seasonal decor. There’s no need to go all out for every occasion, but some timely decorations that celebrate the season can make your entry fun and festive. Coordinate wreaths, planters, signs and other accent pieces for a cohesive look that says, “Come on in.”

PAINT APPEALING PATTERNS
Pretty patterns, such as gingham, checkerboard and stripes, offer an element of surprise and whimsy to a room. These designs can go on floor tiles, or anywhere in need of color, such as walls and tables.
Achieve a modern and clean look with neutral hues or add dimension and movement by using varying paint finishes. Whichever scheme you choose, be sure to tape off the pattern with a quality painter’s tape to keep lines sharp, even on freshly painted surfaces.
DEFY TRADITION WITH BOLD COLORS
While neutral tones such as gray and beige will never go out of style, mixing colors can lead to that “wow” factor. The Bohemian Bazaar design trend dares DIYers to go bold with
bright hues, like bright yellow or teal. Use dramatic colors to make a statement in any space like an office, bedroom, or even somewhere truly unexpected like the pantry.
MAKE THEM MARVEL WITH A MURAL
Whether it’s in a kid’s play area, bedroom or basement, creating a mural can add a personalized touch and make a wall pop. Don’t let the idea intimidate you. While a more seasoned DIYer may illustrate an image or even include words, murals can be as simple as stripes for beginners. No matter how basic or complex you decide to go, complete the look by carrying the color scheme or pattern throughout the area with furniture, décor and other accessories.
You might be surprised how much you can enhance your space with a great idea, a little bit of paint and a high-quality painter’s tape. For more project ideas, visit www.frogtape. com/.
