After the doldrums of winter, spring brings with it a sense of renewal. Part of that is switching things up in your home. It may include decluttering, rearranging furniture, painting an accent wall or adding new decor such as artwork, plants, candles, flower arrangements or throw pillows.

While all of these actions are important in the overall look of your room, oftentimes the window treatments are an afterthought.

“That’s sad,” (that people don’t think about window treatments in their beginning remodel or build),” said Dawn Ashburn, Interior Views window treatment professional. “Especially with motorized shades. It’s wise to plan ahead on these as the wiring can be done during construction.”

Ashburn has specialized in window treatments since 1991. Her van, which sports her business name — Interior Views — is a recognizable vehicle around the area with its bold graphics of window shades. Ashburn takes pride in her “office on wheels,” which makes it convenient having everything she needs in one place.

“I primarily do in-home consultations and installations,” she said. “There are window covering displays at Factory Direct in Hutchinson of all my design ideas for people to see what’s trending, but most of what I do is done at the client’s home.”

An in-person meeting allows Ashburn to listen to her client’s needs and interests, as well as analyze the possibilities with the window(s) and coordinate with other room decor.

“I have samples we can put up to your window to see how they look,” she said. “I will also get exact measurements on site to place the order properly.”

WINDOW TREATMENT TRENDS

Ashburn said there is a wide array of products on the market to stylize a window. The types of treatments are broken out into two categories: “hard,” which consist of mini blinds, cellular shades, sheers and vertical blinds and “soft,” which are those made of fabric-like draperies, panels, valances and Roman shades. products — pushed for child safety — are being promoted. These offer a neater, sleeker look to the treatment, too.

High-tech living is here to stay with remote controls and apps available to operate devices ranging from security cameras and doorbells to TVs, lights and appliances. It’s not surprising motorization has come to window shades, too.

Motorization changes the dynamics of a room. No more stretching and reaching. For tall windows, a motorized option allows using remote control to adjust your shades. This can be in the form of a remote control device such as what you use for your television or you can download an app to your smartphone. The luxury of this option is that when the phone is connected to WiFi, the person can operate their window coverings anywhere in the world.

Other scenarios and conveniences for motorized shades, for instance, include when leaving for work, a person can close all the coverings with a press of a button. For those who like having windows around their bathtub in the master suite, they can close all of them at once while the water is running with no worries.

Motorized shades can be installed in already established rooms. For these, there are rechargeable motors that are plugged into a charger once a year. Otherwise, the system is cordless the rest of the time.

With new construction, it’s important to consider this type of treatment while the home is being built.

“Wiring can be brought right to the window,” Ashburn explains. “It’s something that should be incorporated with the build.”

Trends in the soft treatments are simple, clean, minimalist panels or padded cornices that frame the window.

“Highlighting the fabric is more important than the design,” Ashburn said. “Fabrics have gotten expensive. Beauty and texture of the fabric are stressed more than volume.”

in neutral tones are regularly seen. Color trends for both hard and soft window treatments are warmer greys, something that has a hint of brown in it.

“We’re going away from the true grays and the stark whites,” Ashburn said. “More color — like your water colors and florals in fabrics — is something else we’re seeing more of.”

WHY WORK WITH A DESIGNER?

A homeowner can go online or select shades at one of the “big box stores,” but having a specialist like Ashburn come into your home offers direction, customization and precise sizing to fit the window.

“With soft treatments, you can only select something in the perimeters (size and colors) of the ready-made,” Ashburn explained. “With the custom option, there are hundreds of fabric selections to choose from.”

“I can show you many more lining, style and embellishment options,” she continues. “I can help you find the hardware — how to pick a rod, for instance — and we provide installation, so the product is placed the way it should be.”

Ashburn also offers a wider selection of hard treatments. A benefit of her more than 30 years of experience is if there are problems or warranty issues, she takes care of them.

“I make contacts to help solve or rectify any issue that happens with any of my products,” Ashburn emphasized. “I take full responsibility for taking care of it.”

opportunity continues through 2032.

The journey to a healthier home begins by identifying areas needing regular maintenance and determining which environmentally friendly products can replace current ones. Here’s a roundup of beneficial and feasible home enhancements:

BREATHE EASIER WITH CLEAN AIR

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, states that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. The air filters in your home’s heating and cooling equipment weed out contaminants such as dust and pet dander; however, a dirty filter hampers their efficiency. Regularly cleaning or changing these filters, especially HEPA filters that cost as little as $30, can ensure clean air.

A costless preventive measure is

to maintain the proper functioning of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home. Fires and carbon monoxide poisoning are more likely during winter when homes are typically heated, making detector maintenance an important step.

ENSURING SAFE WATER

My mom is on the move again. At 91, Marianne Johnson is heading uptown to Prince of Peace Retirement Living

After 13 happy years at the Village Cooperative in Hutchinson, my mom — Marianne Johnson — made the decision to follow her lifetime friends and move uptown to Prince of Peace Retirement Living.

Her reasons included, the location. It’s across the street from her church — Peace Lutheran. She liked that an optional noon meal was available Monday through Friday. At 91, she’s not much into cooking anymore. Not surprising considering she has made and served more than 90,000 meals during her lifetime so far. She also liked the option of health care ala carte services. She may not need them, but it’s good to know they are available. And, of course, her friends.

“It was time,” she said. “I’ve been so happy here and I’ll miss everyone so much.”

The best thing about my mom is that she’s always made her own decisions about moving. I am grateful for that. Not everyone is so lucky. Some folks just won’t leave their family home until it’s too late. Remember, it’s much easier when you are in control of your own destiny. If a health crisis intervenes, you no longer will have the luxury of choice. Others will make decisions for you.

I still remember having breakfast with my mom years ago when she announced she wanted to give up the house and move to the Village Cooperative. She was lucky because at the time, the exact apartment she wanted was available. When she no longer wanted to live in a two-bedroom unit, she announced she was ready to downsize to a one-bedroom. And again, one became available. And now another apartment is ready and waiting for her.

As my mom aged, we talked about what’s next. We didn’t really know. Would it be Ecumen Oaks

& Pines, Woodstone Senior Living Community or Harmony River Living Center? We had never really considered Prince of Peace because we had “heard” it was expensive. It took my niece, Rebecca, to ask: How expensive? Of course, we couldn’t answer that because we didn’t really know. She dived into it and discovered it wasn’t a lot more than my mom was paying at the Village Cooperative. That was a game-changer.

I can’t say enough good things about Stacie Jurek, property manager at the co-op. She’s always

been super helpful and right there with answers to our multitude of questions.

Once we found out Prince of Peace was an option for my mom, we had to find out the process. We reached out to Destini Doring, executive director. Like Stacie at the Village Cooperative, Destini was super helpful and answered all our questions — and we had many!

It was this past summer that Marianne Johnson checked out the different apartment options at Prince of Peace Retirement Living in Hutchinson. Looking on is Destini Doring, executive director. She paved the way for my mom’s move by answering our many questions with a smile.

to the waiting list. I can’t stress this enough. If you’re considering a move in the future, check to see if there is a waiting list at your preferred facility. The Village Cooperative, for instance, has a waiting list of 58 names. While that may seem daunting, many people will pass on moving when called. It might be because they’re not ready or they don’t like the unit that’s available. Their refusal becomes an opportunity for someone else. My mom is moving to Prince of Peace because the people on the list before her passed on the unit. She lucked out. You just never know.

Prince of Peace has a total of 49 independent living apartments — 37 are one bedroom and 12 are two bedrooms. My mom wanted a onebedroom and put her name on the list a little more than six months ago. We prepared ourselves for a long wait. We were totally blown away when Destini called in late January with the good news that an apartment was available.

It was perfect timing because

my mom had been lamenting the anticipated long waiting time and that “she’d be long gone before an apartment was available.” My sister, Lynn, and niece Betsy, and I had the privilege of giving her the news via the iPhone Facetime app, which meant we could see her face and she could see ours. We wanted to see her reaction. It was funny because when I gave her the news, she didn’t react at first. I think it was a shock and it took a bit for it to sink it!

“I don’t think I’ll sleep a wink tonight,” she said at the time.

Excited, you bet!

Like Stacie, I can’t say enough good things about Destini Doring. Moving can be scary. You’re leaving what you know to face the unknown. She made the process easy, understandable and fun. Thank you!

it also meant sorting, discarding, donating and packing her stuff. I think it should be mandatory to move every five years because it’s the best way to get us to downsize.

My mom loves books, holiday decorations and dishes. So she was faced with keeping her favorites and passing along the rest. There was a time when parents passed along their belongings to their children, but that isn’t as true today as it once was.

As adult children, we’ve collected our own piles of stuff. There’s no need to add more to it! And when it comes to grandchildren and great-grandchildren many prefer a minimalistic lifestyle, so they don’t want their grandparents’ stuff either.

It’s sad, but true. So another word to the wise, if you think your children will automatically want your things, ask them! You might be

surprised or even disappointed by their response. Yes, they may take a few family heirlooms, but don’t count on them taking everything you’ve been gifted from the past 100 years.

Moving is a pain. There’s no way around it. Fortunately, Hutchinson has a couple of moving companies that can make it relatively painless. We have used All Mighty Movers in the past and will again this time around. The process starts by giving Wade Rolf, owner, a call. He’ll stop by and give you an estimate of what it will cost to move your stuff. He can also give you tips on ways to save money, as well as what services they offer. We’ve had them do big jobs and small ones. The headline on the company’s website — No moving job too big or too small — is true.

If you’ve got a lot of stuff to sell, consider the Leader and Leader Shopper want ads, as well as social media. It seems to work for others.

available: Twice As Nice, the Hutchinson Health Auxiliary, Goodwill, Epilepsy Foundation and the Thrift Shop of Common Cup Ministry in Glencoe are some that come to mind. Also, if you’re discarding clothes, head to the green metal containers around town to donate to the Disabled American Veterans, or DAV, who use the donated items to raise money for veteran services. All Mighty Movers will also dispose, donate and recycle your stuff. Ask Wade for a cost estimate.

Last but not least is cleaning. Each facility has its own rules that govern moving out. Typically, the tenant is required to leave the apartment in move-in condition. You can do this yourself or ask Stacie or Destini for recommendations. They have a list of cleaners, painters, carpet cleaners and so on, so just ask.

With her bags packed and ready to go, Marianne is set to embrace life’s next adventure at Prince of Peace. May the force be with her.

Decoding HVAC jargon

Key terms every homeowner should know to communicate with contractors

Navigating the HVAC industry can be perplexing, with its unfamiliar acronyms and specialized jargon. When homeowners better understand HVACindustry key words, it aids in confident purchasing decisions, and also helps homeowners to better communicate with contractors.

The following is a list of commonly used HVAC-industry terms that homeowners can benefit from knowing.

 A2L/Refrigerant: Refrigerant is the liquid used to absorb and transfer heat from one part of the home comfort system to another. It’s important that refrigerant levels be properly maintained — neither too high nor too low. Newer to use within the U.S. air conditioning sector, A2L is a group of refrigerants with a lower toxicity and flammability rating compared to A2 or A3 refrigerants. A2Ls have emerged as a replacement for older, high-impact refrigerants. It is anticipated that A2L refrigerants will be required in 2025.

 Air Handler: An air handler is the part of an HVAC system that circulates conditioned air throughout the home.

 Furnace: A furnace heats the inside of a home. It uses natural or liquified petroleum (LP) gas, instead of refrigerant, to heat the air inside the home.

 BTU: British Thermal Unit. The amount of heat required to raise or lower the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Understanding BTU allows homeowners to determine the heating or cooling capacity required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, ensuring the HVAC system is adequately sized for the living space.

 Condensing Unit: Condensing units are found outside of the home. The unit is connected to the indoor

 Ratings: The higher the following ratings, the more efficient the unit.

 EER2: The updated metric for Energy Efficiency Ratio, formerly known as EER. The ratio of the cooling capacity of the air conditioner or heat pump in BTUs per hour to the total electrical input in watts. This measure is determined by comparing test units to the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) specifications.

 HSPF2: The updated metric for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, formerly known as HSPF. It measures the efficiency of the heating portion of a heat pump.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, formerly known as SEER. It is used to express the efficiency of an air conditioner or a heat pump in cooling mode. Similar to miles per gallon in a car, a higher SEER2 number indicates a more efficient unit.

 Residential Packaged Unit: Equipment in which all heating and cooling components are located in one cabinet. Installed either beside or on top of a home or business.

 Split System: A home comfort system that uses an indoor and an outdoor component to deliver comfortable air to a living environment. This may involve a combination of elements such as the following: a condensing unit located outside, air handler or furnace positioned indoors. In the case of a system incorporating a gas furnace, an evaporator coil inside the home is also utilized.

 Stage Systems: HVAC systems

designed with various operational stages, including single-stage (on/ off), two-stage (two levels of heating or cooling capacity), or multi-stage (variable speed) confi gurations, enabling them to adjust heating or cooling output to meet comfort preferences while maximizing energy effi ciency in diverse conditions.

 Zone/Zoning: A home may be divided into several different areas, or zones, to better control the temperature. The process of dividing a home into different zones is called zoning.

Knowing the basic terminology, homeowners can seek better optimization of HVAC system performance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of trusted contractors. Cozy or cramped?

Americans reveal how they feel about living in small spaces

When it comes to the home, bigger doesn’t always mean better.

A new survey from Duck brand, which offers products that provide simple, imaginative and helpful solutions for a variety of tasks around the home, discovered that more than half of Americans living in a small space say they feel cozy and comfortable as opposed to cramped.

“We often assume that a larger home is the most desirable, but that’s not always the case,” says Chaffy Assad, product manager at Shurtape Technologies LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “In fact, nearly half of the survey respondents enjoy living in a small space, which most defined as a two-bedroom home or smaller.”

A more intimate space offers many benefits:

 61% say it’s easier to clean,

 54% say it costs less and helps save money and

 52% say it’s easier to maintain.

 Additionally, 57% plan to continue living in their home for the foreseeable future.

While there are many benefits to tinier homes, there are some challenges to living with less space. The biggest downside: 59% of Americans say is the lack of storage, with 48% of people feeling it’s harder to keep small spaces clean and organized compared to larger spaces.

Which areas prove to create the biggest cleaning conundrums? The kitchen ranks No. 1 as the hardest room to keep neat and tidy, with the living room a close second, followed by the bedroom in third. The belongings that are the most difficult to make space for are cookware, bags, shoes and gym equipment.

That being said, Americans are good at finding ways to make the most of their home by keeping clutter to a minimum and getting creative with

organizing, the survey finds.

“No matter how limited your space is, there is always a way to maximize it,” Assad adds. “Making minor and affordable changes, like mounting removable hooks on the wall, easily adds extra storage to hang items such as cooking utensils or a purse, while installing shelf liner on kitchen shelves or in bathroom drawers protects surfaces and makes it simple to wipe up spills or messes.”
