Preserving heritage, embracing the future W
elcome to the cit y of Chanhassen, Minnesota! Founded in the 1850s, Chanhassen prides itself on preserving our heritage while embracing the future. Our current population is approximately 24,000, although many more people work in or visit our community each day. We are proud of our city, and honored to have been recognized nationally as one of the best cities in which to live and raise a family. Whether you are a visitor, new to our community, or a long-time resident, you will find many activities to enjoy. We are home to unique attractions such as the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, which is America’s oldest continuously operating
dinner theatre and consistently receives rave reviews from critics and patrons alike. No matter the season, a trip the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is sure to delight all ages. Sports fans, be sure to take in a Chanhassen Red Birds baseball game at Storm-Redbirds stadium. Fishing on our many lakes, whether in a boat in the summer or on the ice in the winter, is a favorite pastime for many. Chanhassen has an unparalleled park and trail system. Be sure to visit our signature community park, Lake Ann. There, you will find a multitude of options to enjoy the day, such as swimming, renting a canoe or paddleboat, taking a walk through the woods, or playing on one of two

playgrounds, and much more. With 11 clean lakes, 100 plus miles of trails and a park within walking distance of most homes, you can easily banish cries of boredom! Our thriving downtown is home to a great variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities. Finding a spot to catch up with an old friend over a long lunch is easy to do. Picking up the ingredients and decorations for hosting a dinner party at one of our many retail stores is also convenient. For entertainment, you can catch a movie, live music, or a comedy show, too. We hope you will enjoy the time you spend in Chanhassen. If you ever need further insight or help from the city of Chanhassen, don’t
MAYOR TOM FURLONG hesitate to reach out to us. We’re glad that you’re here. Best Regards, Tom Furlong Mayor City of Chanhassen
Why do you like the lifestyle in Chanhassen?
We moved to Chanhassen 12 years ago not knowing anything about the area or even Minnesota. A realtor drove us through Longacres subdivision and we loved the neighborhood right away. Our kids weren’t thrilled to be moving but were able to quickly make friends in the neighborhood, schools and church. The city offers everything that anyone would need to raise a family in terms of shopping, services and entertainment.” TERRI CHEUNG
When my wife Susan and I were looking for a new home in the late ‘90s, we weren’t specifically looking in Chanhassen. Instead, we were looking for great schools, terrific parks, hiking/biking trails, relief from the constant barrage of airplane noise, space for two home offices and frankly, more bathrooms. We found all that and more in Chanhassen.” TOM HOFFA AND HIS DAUGHTER MELANIE HOFFA
We l o v e o u r l e a f y n e i g h b o r h o o d . We li v e i n a B l o o m b e r g a r e a . E a c h o f t h e h o u s e s a r o u n d u s is different from the next. Many of our neighbors have large lots. We get the feeling we are in a beautiful park as we walk around the ’hood. However, the best thing about living in Chanhassen, for us, is our wonderful neighbors. I don’t know how it happened, but we have lived in our current house for over 22 years. And, we are still actually sort of new in our neighborhood.” THE LEPLATT FAMILY, FROM LEFT, BETSY, SVETA, AND HERB
We moved to Chanhassen from Northern California 18 years ago. Choosing to live in Chanhassen was one of the best decisions we could have made for our family. I love the wonderful sense of community. We live in Lake Susan Hills and have a neighborhood full of people who are fun, kind and in a word—amazing. Both of my children are graduates of Chanhassen High School. The city of Chanhassen is convenient to both Highways 5 and 212, numerous shopping venues and several wonderful destination spots like the Arboretum, Paisley Park and the Dinner theater. We run, walk or bike almost daily on our many local trails and paths. Chanhassen is a bustling suburb with a small town feel. We feel lucky to call Chanhassen our home!” LISA PATRIN

A PLACE FOR ALL SEASONS
ATTRACTIONS PARKS CHANHASSEN PARKS Residents take pride in the city park system, which has more than 35 community, neighborhood and open space locations with over 90 miles of trails. The city of Chanhassen’s plan is to provide a park within a half-mile of every resident’s front door. With the exception of some of Chanhassen’s more rural areas, this goal has been attained. Carver County operates the 350-acre Minnewashta Regional Park in western Chanhassen. On its southern border is the Minnesota River Valley Wildlife Refuge. The city is also home to University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. COMMUNITY PARKS Lake Ann Park 1456 W. 78th St. This 102-acre community park is located approximately one-half mile west of Powers Boulevard (County Road 17) and West 78th Street. It also has two picnic/recreation shelters, reservation picnic sites, tennis court, six ball fields, soccer field, canoe racks available for rent, volleyball, trails, boat access and a fishing pier. City Center Park 7700 Market Blvd. This 10-acre park — jointly owned by the city of Chanhassen and School District 112 — lies adjacent to City Hall and Chanhassen Elementary School. The park has four ball fields, five soccer fields, four tennis courts, three basketball courts, a skating rink, hockey rink, skate park and playground. Skate Park — open from sunrise to sunset. From thriving farms to beautiful neighborhoods BY NANCY SIMPSON
T
he first record of the name “Chanhassen, Minn.” was in 1853. The name Chanhassen has origins in the Dakota Indian language. Although several translations prevail, it loosely means “maple sugar.” Clarissa Cleavland, an early settler, is credited with naming the town. Today the Chanhassen logo is the maple leaf, a reflection of this origin. In the 1850s and ‘60s, the town became inhabited with many German Catholic farming immigrants. It was at this time when many Germans left their homeland for a safer and more prosperous opportunity at life. The timing coincided with the end of Indian Land titles in Chanhassen. Fr. Mayr was an ambitious missionary priest in Chanhassen. He felt that new German Catholic immigrants should bind their community with church. The Germans should work together, worship together and attend school together. Thus began the St. Hubert’s congregation, which remains thriving in Chanhassen to this day. The first St. Hubert’s church was built in the late 1860s. The third church of St Hubert’s was built in 1887. This church remains on the National Registry of historic places, and can still be seen on the east end of town. By the turn of the century, visitors to the city of Chanhassen would marvel at the similarity of the community atmosphere to that of German Bavaria. Fr. Mayr’s vision of a cohesive community supporting one another for a better life had come to fruition. Chanhassen had grown into a small hamlet around the Catholic Church and would remain a quiet crossroads for the next 50 years. The approximate population of Chanhassen in the mid 1950s was 200 people. By the 1940s, the town consisted of Pauly’s Bar, Joe’s Saloon, Ma-
Bill Coldwell, a member of Chaska Valley Family Theater, entertains a crowd during the Cemetery Walk at St. Hubert Cemetery with his portrayal of Gus Sinnen, a local farmer who served in World War I. (Submitted photo) son’s store, Albert Pauly’s General Store, Chanhassen State Bank, and Schutrop’s Feed Mill. Although the businesses were few, they were cherished by the small community of people. Observers may have seen Chanhassen as a town that was standing still. But they would have missed an important change in leadership and vision that was taking place in the village of Chanhassen. In 1955, the Minnesota Horticultural Society saw the need for a Landscape Arboretum. Funds were raised and 160 acres of Chanhassen land were turned over to the University of Minnesota. At the time it was a risk to place the future of this project in the small town of Chanhassen. Dr. Leon Snyder was credited to having a vision others did not. Today the University Arboretum is a jewel in our community. In 1968 Herb Bloomberg, a local builder had a vision of creating a 600- seat dinner theater in the small town. Again, Herb had a vision
others could not see. But the City Council was eager and anxious to embrace new and exciting ideas. Today people from all over come to enjoy the beauty of our city and the creative charm of the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. In the early 1970s Chanhassen had an ambitious city government that had insight toward growth of a community not seen before. By the late 1970s Chanhassen embarked on a redevelopment plan. This plan included thriving businesses and a variety of industrial companies. For the first time in its history, the city purchased land to create a park. Today the city has many parks and lakes enjoyed by its residents and Lake Ann Park is a favorite among residents. During this same period, the population began to grow. Today the population of Chanhassen is over 23,000 people. Many of the neighborhoods you find in Chanhassen were originally the property of the German immigrant farmers. By the 1960s, farming began to decline in
Chanhassen. This left lush, green and well groomed farm property to take on a new life of neighborhoods and families. Each generation, from our early settlers to our current generation, brought something special that helped the city of Chanhassen grow into the community it is today. Early settlers saw pristine property and beautiful lakes. They saw a place on the frontier they wanted to call home. The German farmers, with the leadership of Fr. Mayr, brought a strong work ethic and developed a spirit of community among each other. The visionaries of the 1970s and beyond brought the ideas, energy and willingness to take risks, to see what others had not. Nancy Simpson is a Chanhassen resident and a member of the Chanhassen Historical Society. Her column appears monthly in the Chanhassen Villager.
