Growing community that HAS KEPT ITS SMALLTOWN FEEL Chanhassen offers outdoor fun year round. The annual Feb Fest brings ice fishing contests, skating, sledding and more.

C

hanhassen continues to be recog ni zed across t he cou nt r y as a great place to live. Money Magazine has listed Chanhassen as one of the top places to live five times, most recently in 2015. Family Circle Magazine selected Chanhassen as one of the top 10 towns in the nation to raise a family. In addition to its abundance of natural amenities of green space and lakes and a city-wide trail system, Chanhassen’s national profile is further enhanced by being home to Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Prince’s Paisley Park museum and re-

cording studio, and the National Weather Service. In fact, some thought developer Herb Bloomberg was crazy to bring his idea of a music dinner theater out to the middle of what was then pretty much farmland in the late 1960s. In little more than two generations, Chanhassen has grown from a rural village comprised of families whose ancestors immigrated from Germany, and farmed the gently rolling hills, to a vibrant community of approximately 25,000. The dinner theater celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018, demonstrating that Bloomberg had vision, not only for his theater, but also for the city of Chanhassen, realizing it was

not only a good place for his dinner theater, but had the potential to be a good place to work, to live and raise a family. The Dave Harrington family thought so, too. “Our family has lived in Chan hassen for 3 0 yea rs,” Harrington said. “What drew us here was the beauty of the lakes, trees and hills of the area. Another plus are the excellent school districts serving the community. We love the small-town feel, with access to shopping, and we look forward to a growing, unique restaurant scene.” Jessic a B o evers’ fa mi ly moved to Chanhassen 12 years ago from Indiana. Both she and her husband Peter are

Minnesota natives. When they returned to the state, they chose Chanhassen based on its reputation. “We decided to live here because at the time, it was a city that reinvested in its community with parks and trails, thought ful school and city planning, multi-generational activities, and great safety statistics,” Boevers said. “It had all of the conveniences of a large city but with a small-town feel ... We have found it to be a wonderful place to be outdoors, easy to support the variety of local businesses, prog rams and classes, and participate in fun events that provide our children and family with a sense of tradition.” 2019 - 2020 | chanvillager.com

WHAT’S NEW BY UNSIE ZUEGE

D

evelopment i n Chanhassen keeps humming along. The past year has brought new senior housing; a new apartment building and grocery store to downtown; and two new family-owned restaurants. In addition, the former Prince Rogers Nelson property was sold to Lennar, which worked out a land swap with the city, providing parkland and the expansion of city trails around Lake Ann. “This year the city continues to have balanced growth,” said Kate Aanenson, Chanhassen community development director. “There has been full range of new housing opportunities including apartments, senior housing, townhouses and singlefamily homes. With the population growth, there are additional commercial openings including retail, restaurants and a future brewery. New construction and expansion existing of industrial

buildings is adding to the tax base and employment in the city,” Aanenson said. Here’s what’s new:

HOUSING/RETAIL The Venue and Aldi — The Venue is a 134-unit market rate apartment building scheduled to open in 2019. Amenities in the apartment units include stainless steel appliances, walk-in closets, nine-foot ceilings and private balconies. Designed as a lifestyle-driven apartment community, tenants will enjoy a community lounge/coffee area, fitness center, theater room and sport simulator. There is heated underground parking, and sixth floor has a sky lounge and rooftop terrace. A 19,000-square-foot Aldi grocery store, also scheduled to open this year, anchors the building. The Park, formerly known as the former Prince Rogers Nelson property on Galpin Boulevard, is a residential development with 169 lots. Development began in 2019. Riley Crossing, 620 Al-

drich Drive, is a intergenerational senior independent living community, scheduled to open in 2019. According to Aanenson, the building was fully leased before it opened. Avienda lifestyle center continues to be planned for the property at Powers Boulevard and Lyman Boulevard. The lifestyle center will include housing, retail and offices.

RESTAURANTS Cafe Thyme, 7850 Market Boulevard, Market Square, a locally owned farm to table-styled restaurant, providing familiar comfort food but with global flavor profiles. North Coop, 2401 Highway 7, featuring southern-styled home cooking, including fried green tomatoes. Chanhassen Brewery, locally owned, plans to open in 2020, providing craft beers and a community-building atmosphere. Another restaurant is planned for 2020, at the former Applebee’s site on West 79th Street. The concept will be fine

food in a casual setting with craft cocktails.

COMMERCIAL Holasek Business Park Subdivision, the former site of Holasek Nursery, will include three industrial buildings, totaling 449,350 square feet. Control Concepts is moving from Dell Five business park to 8077 Century Boulevard, and building a 54,000-squarefoot office warehouse and manufacturing building. Camp Tanadoona is continuing its capital improvement project, and will build a new 10,500-square-foot dining hall that will seat 200 and provide gathering space for other year round activities.

ROAD PROJECT Hwy 101 south of Pioneer — improvements to Highway 101 between Pioneer Trail and Flying Cloud Drive will transform it from the existing two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided roadway with curb and gutter and a trail. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2020.

At the southeast corner of Highway 5 and Audubon Road in Chanhassen stands the late pop star’s headquarters, the primary location for recordings, filming videos and rehearsing tours. The 55,000-square-feet complex contains two recording studios, a rehearsal room, a video editing suite and a 12,500-squarefoot sound stage. After Prince’s death in 2016, Paisley Park turned into a museum, honoring the life and music of the late music star. If visitors look across High-

way 5 from Paisley Park to the neighboring Lake Ann Park, they will not be able to see an archive of Prince graffiti honoring the late pop star. That’s because it is under West 78th Street and Highway 5. On the walls of a trail tunnel, that also encapsulates Riley Creek, purple spray-painted messages to Prince stick like the memories that he gave to his fans. As visitors walk through the tunnels, Prince’s logo will guide them down the center of the trail, bordered by memories and tributes to Minnesota’s own pop sensation. Signs along Highway 41 in Chanhassen point the way to Lake Minnewashta Regional Park. Home to a fishing pier, beach, picnic tables, playgrounds and a sand volleyball court, Carver County’s second largest lake provides something for every-

one. The park also allows canoe storage racks to be rented across the park, for those who want to explore the lake. The 340-acre park has five miles worth of trails around the edge of the lake. With more than 1,200 acres of gardens and tree collections, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen provides visitors with a sample of Minnesota’s vast horticulture variety. Born out of the University of Minnesota Horticulture Research Center in 1958, the facility has 12.5 miles of garden paths and hiking trails and is the state’s largest horticulture site. From gardens of fauna and flora, to seasonal activities for all ages, the Arboretum is a popular site for those visiting Chanhassen. Inside the Snyder Building at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, visitors will find

the Andersen Horticultural Library, the largest horticultural research library in the Upper Midwest. With furnishings crafted by renowned American woodworker George Nakashima, the idea of a library came from the late Minnesota Gov. Elmer L. Andersen and his wife, Eleanor, who had an interest in horticulture and collecting books. The library was completed in fall 1973, and dedicated in summer 1974. F i f t e en ye a r s a f t er t he completion, Gov. Andersen dedicated a new add-on to the library, including a climatecontrolled space for fragile texts, and historic seed and nursery catalogs. Several of the historic texts in the library are gifts from the Andersens’ personal assortment of books. Admission to the library is included with the fee to enter the Arboretum.

arver County has a thriving arts community, thanks in pa r t to t he A r t s Consor tium of Carver County. The idea of the ACCC began in 2009 after members of District 112, Chaska Valley Family Theatre, and other artminded community groups, sought to collaborate in recognizing a growing arts community and raising its public profile. “The ACCC was a virtual organization working to bring arts to the communities of

Carver County,” said ACCC President Cynthia Anderson. “Now, we have the Arts Center in Victoria where we can bring people to the arts as well. We have expanded our offerings and created opportunities for artists to flourish. “We really strive to promote all artistic genres, and we’re active year-round. In the past year we’ve had exhibited visual arts and hosted music and literary events. We hold contests to encourage both budding and seasoned artists. We sponsor ArtStock and the Volksfest Art Fair, promote the Art Wander in the fall. Our Arts Center Gallery

and Gift Shop promotes artists year round.” Founding president Barb Hone recalled when ACCC was just an idea. In 2009, a group of community arts leaders met with Bill Cleveland, director of the Center for the Study of Art and Community, a nationally known arts think tank, for input and inspiration. “He’d be surprised at what resulted,” Hone said. “The ACCC has grown via its website and opened its Art Center June 2018, in downtown Victoria. Finally having a physical location, the ACCC draws visitors from the nearby communities, as well as arts lovers from

around the metro area. “If he returned, Bill Clevel a n d wou l d b e g e nu i n e ly ple a s e d , su r pr i s e d by t he ACCC’s accomplishments as it celebrates its 10th-year anniversary.” ACCC board member Terrie Myers said, “My hope is that, through the vision of the ACCC, Carver County, with its enormous abundance of creative talent in this beautiful, natural setting, becomes a destination arts region, growing into a sustainable, creative economy not unlike Santa Fe, New Mexico.” Visua l a r tist a nd ACCC m e mb e r C ou r t n ey M i l l e r

Purgatory Creek Recreation Area Trail can be accessed at 13001 Technology Drive. The trailhead starts at the Veterans Memorial and along the way you’ll find the Mayor Jean Harris Memorial Gathering Bridge. Foodies will also take pleasure that restaurants are just across the street from the main parking lot.

FILE PHOTO

One notable spot on Minnesota River Bluffs LRT Regional Trail is the pedestrian bridge that crosses over Valley View Road in Eden Prairie. The location of the pedestrian bridge was once the site of a 19-foot railroad bridge that crossed Valley View and was nicknamed “Graffiti Bridge” by the locals. Prince’s 1990 film, “Graffiti Bridge,” was named for the former iconic Eden Prairie landmark. The bridge only allowed a single lane at a time and was torn down in 1991 to make room for increasing traffic as the city continued to grow. 2019 - 2020 | chanvillager.com

Chanhassen City Hall, at 7700 Market Blvd., is the epicenter of local government. Built in 1980, with a vision from the architectural group BKV and CEO Jack Boarman, the building had to pass two referendums before it was constructed. Included on the City Hall campus is the main fire station, a skate park, outdoor ice rink, open skate area, and City Center Park, which hosts concerts every Thursday. It is also home to events on holidays including Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Also in the facilities are city departments, such as parks and recreation, community development and city engineering. “There are multiple aspects of city government operating out of City Hall,” said Chanhassen City Manager Todd Gerhardt. Since the building’s inception nearly four de-

One add-on upgraded the south part of the building. In 1998, an atrium was added. And another addition took place 11 years ago for the senior center in the lower level of the City Hall, and the Chanhassen Library, located across the plaza. MSR Design spearheaded the architecture of the new library, while the senior center expanded into the old library space. The addition of the fountain conference room allowed multipurpose use for senior activities. One issue Gerhardt sees currently with the building is the lack of space in the reception area. Since 1980, no changes have been made to the desk and welcome area for visitors and Gerhardt recognizes the need to an upgrade. “It’s a little chaotic up there,” he said. He hopes a new addition to that area will improve security and provide more

efficient service for guests. According to Gerhardt, the senior center is an area of City Hall that many people may not know a lot about. From educational programs to lifelong learning, the senior center includes activities and encourages learning for the older generation in the community. Mary Blazanin, Chanhassen senior center coordinator, organizes educational activities, such as learning about Minnesota history and an event called “Donuts with the Deputies,” where seniors can learn more about law enforcement from the city’s police deputies, as well as off-campus events like Twins games, riverboat day trips, and pedicures. “The senior center is one of our gems in the community,” Gerhardt said. From senior activities to cit y gover n ment, t he Cit y Hall is the hub for everything Chanhassen.

The Chanhassen Library and Veterans Monument are located on the City Hall campus.

HISTORY

Northampton Colony founded BY NANCY SIMPSON The history of Chanhassen begins in many places involving various people. The Northampton Colony from Massachusetts is one such group to establish what is now the city of Chanhassen as its home. In 1848, the first land that would soon become the state of Minnesota was opened Henry Lyman for ent r y by the Minnesota Territory. It was common for people from eastern states to form a group with the intentions to move together to settle western areas of the United States. A group from Massachusetts formed and named itself the Northampton Colony. They were in search of fertile, but cheap, land to give their families a better life. In their words, they were looking for a “more desirable community.” To the colony, this meant good land and prosperous farms, lived in by moral and literate people. Eastern colonies were important to the settlement of the western states, as they developed communities and organized the initial stages of early government in an undeveloped west. The early settlers of the colony settled on land that is now on the northwestern edges of the city of Chanhassen, in the area of Lake Minnewashta and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Records indicate that by 1853, the colony established a Post Office and it would be

Pioneer Cemetery, off of Galpin Boulevard, where several of the early Northampton Colony members are buried. named “Chanhassen.” Clarissa Cleaveland wou ld be credited with the name. The name Chanhassen comes from Dakota Indian words meaning tree and berry juice. The locals understood it to mean maple tree or maple sugar. The maple leaf remains the iconic logo you see on city buildings, letterhead and city publications. By 1854 the Northampton Colony and other settlers led the way to create a township which was also called Chanhassen. A township consisted of a six by six mile square of land. The original township of Chanhassen consisted of Lake Minnewashta as its northwest corner, and radiated six miles east and six miles south. When a township is formed, it is recognized by the state, and a local government structure can be formed. Members of the Northampton Colony brought much to the early formal settlement of the city of Chanhassen. You will see these landmarks around the city, which give recognition to this ambitious group of settlers.

Lyman Boulevard: Henry Lyman was the township’s first postmaster and clerk. He was widely known for his knowledge of agriculture and horticulture. He joined and collaborated with the Minnesota Horticultural Society to breed apples. Henry Lyman’s son, Arthur, was instrumental in distributing Grimm alfalfa to a broader scope of farmers. This would become critical to farmers settling in northern climates. Galpin Boulevard: Churches were at the center of communities in New England society. In 1853 it was recorded that a church was formed in Chanhassen under the direction of the Rev. Charles Galpin. In the early stages of the congregation, services were held under the maples trees at Henry Lyman’s farm. Powers Boulevard: George Powers was a well-educated man from the east. When the initial township of Chanhassen formed a government, he would become the first town clerk. German settlers to the

township and the settlers from the east developed a great deal of conflict together during the 1860s. The German settlers accused G eorge Powers of wrongdoings. The town records revealed no wrongdoing on George Power’s part. All accusations were dropped, but the Germans took governmental hold of the township. Pioneer Cemetery: Pioneer Cemetery lies discreetly on the current Galpin Boulevard, a few blocks south of Highway 5. In 1861, several of the Northampton settlers met to form the Chanhassen Cemetery Association. The current site of Pioneer Cemetery held the grave site of an early colonist, so the land was declared the official cemetery. The cemetery is currently owned and operated by the city of Chanhassen, but you will find this cemetery to be the final resting place of many of the early colony members and their descendants. Nancy Simpson is a Chanhassen resident and a member of the Chanhassen Historical Society.

Bus transportation is provided to downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota, Monday-Friday, from the following Park-and-Ride locations: (Chanhassen) SouthWest Village, Hwy. 212 and Hwy. 101; Chanhassen Transit Station, Market Street next to Chanhassen Dinner Theatres; (Chaska) East Creek Transit Station, Hwy. 212 and Hwy. 41; Walnut Park and Ride, Co. Rd. 61 and Walnut

Carver County Environmental Center Recyclables and household hazardous waste may be dropped off at this site, in many cases at no cost. The center also will collect items such as electronics and appliances for a fee. The center features a product reuse area and an environmental education clearing house. Items, such as radon test kits, also are for sale. Household hazardous waste must be disposed of properly to avoid endangering health and contaminating ground water. These wastes include: solvents,

household cleaners, pesticides, paint, wood preservatives, aerosols, batteries, automotive oil and antifreeze. The best way to handle the waste – except those that are banned – is to use it or give it to someone who will. If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. Check before bringing the waste in. The county also schedules periodic hazardous waste collection programs. 116 Peavey Circle, Chaska 952-361-1835
