Shorewood

S

horewood, located on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, was originally part of Excelsior Township and was not incorporated until 1956. Lake Minnetonka, meaning “big water,” receives its name from Dakota (Sioux) Indians who spent summers at the lake. The U.S. government opened this area for homesteading in 1855. Many of the original settlers are the namesakes for local roads, bays and neighborhoods. In the early 1880s, the lake area began to develop as a resort spot. Streetcars and “streetcar boats” provided transportation around the lake and surrounding communities. You can still see an old “streetcar boat,” Minnehaha, cruising around Lake Minnetonka today. Shorewood, within Hennepin County, is on the south shore of Lake Minnetonka. It incorporates 3,600 acres and is six miles long and one mile wide. State Hwy. 7 runs east and west through the city. There are approximately 2,725 households within the city. The city is primarily a residential community with limited commercial establishments along Hwy. 7. The larger employers in Shorewood are Cub Foods, the Shorewood Village Shopping Center, Xcel Energy and Minnetonka Country Club. Three islands — Spray, Enchanted and Shady Islands — are located in Shorewood. Although the islands are located within the city boundaries, they receive postal service and fire protection as well as education services from Mound.

By registering prior to Election Day, your name and address will appear on the polling place roster. An individual may register any time before the 20th day preceding any election, on Election Day at the polling locations, or when submitting an absentee ballot. Registration cards are available at city and township offices, libraries and the county auditor’s office, which in Hennepin County is on the sixth floor of the Government Center in downtown Minneapolis. You may print a copy of the registration card by accessing http://www.co.hennepin.mn.us/taxsvcs/ vote/VoterRegForms/voteregEnglish.pdf. To do so, you must provide election judges at your polling location with certain acceptable forms of identification to prove your eligibility, such as: 1. A Minnesota Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit or Identification Card with your current address (or the receipt for renewal or change of the license or I.D.). 2. A “Notice of Late Registration” received from your city clerk if your voter registration card was received after the last day to preregister. 3. Another registered voter living in your precinct who will come to the polling location with you to vouch for your residency. 5. If you are a college student, you may also use your college student identification card with name and photo if your college has provided a list of students to the county. innetonka Schools are focused on world-class, child-centered excellence and serve the western third of Minnetonka and all or parts of Chanhassen, Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, Victoria and Woodland. There are more than 8,300 students enrolled in Minnetonka schools. In total there are six elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (Gr. 6-8), one high school (Gr. 9-12), and a community education center that houses many of the district’s early childhood, youth and adult programs. Minnetonka Public Schools offers a variety of learning opportunities for families, including Chinese or Spanish immersion as an option at each of its six elementary schools beginning in kindergarten. In the immersion program, English-speaking students learn a second language as part of regular classroom activities. About 50 percent of the District’s kindergarteners enroll in the traditional kindergarten program (taught in English) and about 50 percent enroll in one of the language immersion options. Kindergarten families may also choose a half-day or extended day program. Before- and after-school child care is available at each school.

It is best described as a “holistic” approach to educating young children. This means the philosophical approach incorporates not only rigorous academics (without leveraging “Memorize-to-Test” tactics), but also meets the intensive social and emotional developmental needs of students. This education is highly individualized, offering small classrooms, and meets children where they are at. It is intrinsically artistic, creative, active, integrative, and truly inspiring. Children cultivate a natural love for learning early in life. Spring Hill honors students for who they are and what they contribute.
