What’s new,
RED WING? While we love our history, we don’t shy away from growth in the present. Below you can find a sampling of recent excitement for Red Wing, and exciting things to come in 2018:
FAQs
What do we get asked about most often at the Visitor Center? Q: Is the town named after the shoes or are the shoes named after the town?
What’s New/FAQs
A: The town was named after Native American Chief Red Wing in 1823, long before shoes started being produced by Charles Beckman (in 1905). In fall of 2017, Duluth Trading Co. opened up their new outlet store right on Main Street next to the Red Wing Shoe Store. Stop in and do some shopping! See their ad on page 38.
Q: Can we tour the shoe factory?
A: Unfortunately no, but there’s a video at the Red Wing Shoe Museum that you can watch to give you a glimpse inside the factory.
Q: Do they still make pottery here? Welch Village is now offering something else to do when there isn’t snow on the ground – mountain biking! Find out more about their new mountain bike trails on page 19.
A: Yes they do! Visit Red Wing Pottery & Stoneware to take a tour and see pottery still being made just as it was years ago.
Q: Where do you suggest we stay during our visit?
A: Everyone has different needs of course. Check out the lodging chart on page 26 to choose the accommodations right for you!
Q: Where is a good place to eat?
A: We have great choices! Check out the dining guide on page 34 to see which restaurants offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, kids menus, and more.
Q: How do we get to Barn Bluff?
A: From Plum St. (Hwy 58), travel east on W 5th St. The trail head will be on the left after driving under the Hwy 61 overpass. Check out the map on page 23 to help find your way!
Q: Where can we see the bald eagles?
A: Colvill Park is a great spot to search for eagles that come back and nest every year. They’re easier to see when the trees are bare in the colder months – spy them perched on tree branches. You can also watch our social media for updates on eagle counts.
Q: Can we walk or bike along the river? Where can we find trails in town?
A: The Riverfront Trail connects Levee Park to Bay Point Park and offers a nice stroll or ride right along the river. You can find other trails for walking, hiking or biking on pages 19 and 23 in this guide. We should also mention the historic walking tour, with information offered on page 13.
14
We’re always excited about good trail and park news. Check out the recently completed Riverfront Trail which connects Bay Point Park with Levee Park and provides a spectacular ride, run, or stroll along the river. We’re looking forward to more dock space for river boats and recreational boats at Levee Park. The North Trail at Barn Bluff will reopen in the spring of 2018 after years of being closed! Check out pages 19, 22-25 for more park and trail information and locations.
Q: Do you have sample itineraries for my length of stay?
A: Absolutely we do. Call or email us at the Visitor Center and we’ll be happy to provide an itinerary specific to your visit, or you can go to RedWing.org to find our most popular itineraries.
We want to see what you’re up to!

Outdoor Activities Countless
Learn, Discover, and Uncover
Our natural beauty is reason enough for you to come and play.
With an abundance of outdoor activities to help you stay active in this river town, there is never a dull moment. Traverse the mighty Mississippi and conquer the hills as you venture through the scenic discoveries that await you.
BY WATER
BY WHEELS Gear up your bike for the long trails ahead at the bike station in Levee Park or get a tune up from Red Wing Bicycle Co. & Outfitter – where you can find anything from a brand-new bike to bicycle gear and more for all your trail-riding enjoyment. If you are not looking to buy a new bike just yet, you can rent one from the St. James Hotel or Red Wing Bicycle Co. & Outfitter for the day. As the Cannon Valley Trail, Riverfront Trail and more are paved, you can lace up the rollerblades or stand atop your skateboard or longboard and put on some miles. For more adventurous wheelin’, hit the skate park by Pottery Pond to show off your skills, or the new chairlift-served mountain biking trails at Welch Village for a bigger thrill.
Our variety of trail routes makes Red Wing a sought-after hiking destination. Take in the picturesque sights from trails atop Barn Bluff and Memorial Park (find maps on pg. 23). Venture along the river via the Riverfront Trail that connects Levee Park to Bay Point Park. You can also walk through the historic downtown district of the city through a historic walking tour (see page 13 for more information). Red Wing is well-equipped for exploration by foot.
Outdoor Activities
The Mississippi River offers individual and group activities galore for all ages and abilities. Recreational boating is a must – you can launch your own boat at Ole Miss Marina or even rent a boat from Red Wing Marina (and you can rent a slip at both to keep your boat at the ready). Explore the backwaters via paddle board and kayak with the help of Broken Paddle Guiding. Try your hand at fishing the river with the help of Hahn’s Fishing Guide Service. There are even waves of fun to be had for the entire family at Red Wing Water Park in Colvill Park.
BY FOOT
BY CHAIR
BY SKIS
If you are not feeling adventurous enough to ride the trails or conquer the paddle board, feel free to simply enjoy nature’s scenery and relax by grabbing a picnic table in one of our parks, finding yourself a park bench or swing and enjoying the river views, or enjoying one of our restaurants’ outdoor dining options and soaking up the fresh air. You can even venture with your lawn chairs to Central Park and enjoy the variety of concerts and other entertainment held in the bandshell.
Once the ground is fully covered in a blanket of snow, many other fun activities begin to surface. Take to the slopes on skis or snowboards at Welch Village, featuring over 60 slope trails on five different ridges that overlook the Belle Creek and Cannon River Valleys. You can also give cross country skiing – and snowshoeing – a try on the Cannon Valley Trail, at Mississippi National Golf Links, and throughout the trails in Memorial Park.

Vibrant and Blooming
Open June 2
Flowers, Parks, Gardens Stroll through the town and you’ll be surprised at all the wonders that await you. For years, Red Wing has maintained not only their historic sites, but their flora as well.
Hanging Flower Baskets
You can’t miss our beautiful flower baskets as you stroll the streets during spring and summer! For over 26 years, Red Wing has been able to showcase these beautiful baskets on many light poles lining the downtown streets and other areas throughout town thanks to fundraising from the Noontime Kiwanis Club in partnership with the City of Red Wing and the nurseries. Each basket is created locally by Sargent’s Nursery and Hallstrom’s Florist & Greenhouse. Crafted with careful attention to detail, these flower baskets went from only a few the first few years to over a hundred on display today. Contact either Sargent’s Nursery or Hallstrom’s Florist & Greenhouse to find out how you can design your own unique arrangement or duplicate a current flower basket design.
Pollinator Park
Outdoor Activities
Seated at the intersection of Main and Broad Streets you will find the exquisite Pollinator Park. Highlighted by a beautiful butterfly sculpture, the park is dedicated to the preservation and protection of pollinators. Home to many butterflies, honeybees and other pollinators, this park is open to the public providing paved walkways, a tribute sculpture and various benches. Bring Your Bicycles!
Red Wing offers many ways to ride for all ages and skill levels. Whether you are an avid bicyclist or just have a thirst for adventure, there is a trail calling your name. In 2017, Minnesota ranked 2nd on the list of top bicycle friendly states. To live up to the hype, Red Wing offers miles of paved trails for cyclists of all ages, as well as a mountain bike park – new at Welch Village – for cyclists seeking more of an off-road adventure.
Pedal Along the Cannon Valley Trail
Take On the New Mountain Biking Trails
Stretching a vast 19.7 miles from Red Wing through Welch to Cannon Falls, the Cannon Valley Trail is a scenic treat just waiting to be devoured. Great for all skill levels, you can check out their interactive map and more at CannonValleyTrail.org
Welch Village is now offering more ways for you to enjoy their hills throughout the year. They offer multiple downhill mountain bike trails for all ability levels that are chairlift-served – making it easy to get in as many rides as you’d like when snow doesn’t cover their hills. They also offer full-service food and beverage during trail hours.
Before enjoying all there is to discover on the Cannon Valley Trail, make sure you have a valid Wheel Pass – a requirement to ride the trail – for cycling April 1st to November 1st. Stop in at the Red Wing Visitor Center in the historic Depot, Red Wing Bicycle Co. & Outfitter, or go to the Cannon Valley Trail website to get yours.
You can even bike there from Red Wing via the Cannon Valley Trail, which travels directly in front of Welch Village. To view trail maps and find more information on safety regulations and prerequisites for the trails, visit welchvillage.com
Explore the Goodhue Pioneer State Trail

Currently, there are 4 miles of the Goodhue Pioneer State Trail paving the way between the Cannon Valley Trail to the trails within Red Wing. This trail does not require any passes or fees from cyclists. You can find trail maps and more information online at dnr.state.mn.us 316

The Candlelight Inn is a Victorian B&B both in architecture and décor and was originally built by the manager of the Red Wing Stoneware Company in 1877. The Moondance Inn is a 6,000 sq. ft. stone B&B with antique furnishings and large rooms. The three-floor house was originally built in 1874 by Dr. A. B. Hawley, a well-known Red Wing doctor. The Golden Lantern Inn was constructed in 1932-34 by J. R. Sweasy, president of the Red Wing Shoe Company. With carved wood, exquisite tile, and marble throughout the house, this B&B has a distinct Art Deco feel. The Pratt-Taber Inn comes with an elegant Italianate design. Built in 1876, this B&B received the Red Wing Heritage Preservation Award in 2008 for its “new energy” restoration. Use the directory on page 30 to make your bed and breakfast reservation.

Savor the Flavors of
Local Wine
Beer
Walk through the grape vines and sip the local wines of Red Wing at our two distinguished and delightful vineyards: Flower Valley Vineyards and Falconer Vineyards & Winery.
Established by Dave, Mary, and Tom Mohn in 2002, Flower Valley Vineyards is located in the Flower Valley region at the base of the bluffs south of Red Wing. From sampling selections in the tasting room, to formal celebrations in the historic timber frame barn, there is always something happening at Flower Valley Vineyards. Located on 7.5 acres, Falconer Vineyards & Winery is located on the west end of Red Wing. Established in 2003, this winery and vineyard specifically uses cold climate grapes that are designed to withstand the frigid temperatures of Minnesota. They provide event hosting, live entertainment, scenic views from their tasting room, a seasonal deck bistro—serving wood-fired pizzas—and also hard cider.
If you’re a fan of craft beer, you have to check
out the locally-crafted brews from Red Wing Brewery, who produce 6-7 barrels of ale per week! Try a flight or take home a growler of their numerous beers on tap. They also offer hand-made pizzas, calzones, and their very own root beer.
