‘Freud’s Last Session’

Hour-long conversation between brilliant men fuels play from the heavy topics of conversation.

Despite the vast difference between the two characters, the actors’ onstage chemistry is remarkable — they are the perfect pair, and each of the arguments they present are equally as strong as they are thought provoking.

The one major fault of this play is its length. Lasting only one hour and 25 minutes, it leaves the audience informed and entertained, but begging for more.

These words, spoken by Sigmund Freud, mirror the debate about life’s greatest questions presented in the Ensemble Theatre’s production of “Freud’s Last Session.”

Set in London during World War II, this drama allows the audience to eavesdrop on a fictional meeting between Freud (Bruce Cromer) and C.S. Lewis (Barry Mulholland).

Freud, a notorious atheist and

psychoanalyst, challenges the beliefs and writings of the Christian Lewis about love, sex, life, death and the existence of God. The audience also learns about the lives of both men and their struggles throughout the entirety of the show, making the men seem more relatable and vulnerable to each other — and to the viewers.

The two actors are all that is needed to entice the gallery.

What it lacks in beauty and extravagance, it makes up for in sheer intellect. The lively conversation taking

place between the two men for the entire length of the play is all the audience needs to stay alert and attentive.

As expected, the show is filled with highly intelligent, fast-paced banter. It presents the perfect mix of fiction and factual information, and while there is great risk for this play to become bogged down from the spirited debates, it is saved by brief moments of comedy, perfectly interspersed throughout the production.

What to watch

Romantic comedies that don’t suck “Punch-Drunk Love,” and it’s one of the most romantic statements I’ve ever heard.

The fact that it comes as he is threatening to beat someone within an inch of his life only confirms its romantic status.

Sandler plays Barry Egan, a man with serious anger issues who regularly says things like, “At that restaurant, I beat up the bathroom. I’m sorry,” and “I’m lookin’ at your face and I just wanna smash it. I just wanna f**kin’ smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. You’re so pretty.”

Egan has seven sisters, but little luck with the opposite sex. So he calls a sex-line, which turns out to be a scam.

This complicates his already complicated courtship of Lena (Emily Watson), a coworker of one of his sisters.

When Egan flies from Los Angeles to Provo, Utah to confront the man operating the sex-line, it proves how powerful love is — because it might even get a maniac like Egan to live happily ever after.

Keith BieryGolick | Managing Editor Valentine’s Day is coming up, which means you’re probably in the market for a romantic comedy — either to watch with that special someone, or to make yourself forget you don’t have a special someone. Movies like “No Strings Attached” and “Fever Pitch” litter the Netflix Instant landscape. But for those looking for something better, I’ve assembled a list of romantic comedies that don’t suck. These movies don’t adhere to clichés of the genre — which means, yes, they’re a little weird and, no, they don’t always have happy endings.

Deal with it.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Surely, anyone who’s had a meaningful relationship come to an end has thought about how wonderful it would be to erase all the memories of their ex-lover.

In “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” those wishes become a reality.

Jim Carrey — reminding everyone he can really act — plays Joel Barish, an emotionally withdrawn weirdo who embarks on a relationship with the freespirited Clementine (Kate Winslet).

After a particularly vicious fight, Clementine hires a company to literally

erase all her memories of Joel.

When Joel finds out, he is devastated and decides to undergo the procedure himself. But in the process, he relives some of the couple’s happier moments in fragmented dreams and desperately fights to keep them.

Charlie Kaufman’s beautifully written film deals in honest emotions and real feelings, showing us it’s often our failures that shape us — not our successes.

Punch-Drunk Love “I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine.”

After a couple movies with talented comedians not known for their looks, I can almost hear the sighs of relief from readers desperate for some beefcake After all, who wants to watch a romantic comedy with ugly people in it?

That’s too much like real life.

Ryan Gosling stars in “Lars and the Real Girl,” but here’s the catch: Gosling isn’t the lady killer from “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

Instead, he plays Lars, a socially inept man with hints of mental problems who begins a relationship with a life-size sex doll.

In Lars’ eyes, Bianca is a wheelchairbound missionary of Brazilian and Danish decent. In everyone else’s eyes, she’s the punchline to a dirty joke. But the townspeople become so worried about Lars they treat Bianca as a real person, trying to nurture Lars out of his need for inanimate affection.

It’s hard to explain the plot without making it sound like a juvenile skit from Saturday Night Live. But through careful direction and strong performances,“Lars and the Real Girl” retains the humor of its sketch-based premise while cutting deeper than any skit ever could.

Phi Delta Theta rebuilds after academic misconduct

MEN OF CHARACTER The national headquarters of Phi Delta Theta visited the University of Cincinnati’s chapter in October 2012 and slashed half of its active members. Now, the fraternity tries to rebuild, with the men pictured above leading way.

GRACE ZBIEGIEN | STAFF rEPORTER A University of Cincinnati fraternity wants to better the Cincinnati community, but is facing an internal overhaul in its efforts to do so.

Phi Delta Theta — founded at Miami University in 1848 on the principals of friendship, sound learning and moral rectitude — expanded to the University of Cincinnati with the Ohio Theta chapter in 1898. When some Ohio Thetas engaged in behavioral and academic misconduct, failing to live up to the fraternity’s basic principles, Phi Delta Theta’s national

headquarters visited UC’s chapter in October 2012 and slashed half of the chapter’s active members.

Eric Fash, the fraternity’s president at UC and third-year marketing and finance student, was one of 18 active members at the time.

“National headquarters came in and interviewed all our members,” Fash said.

“They decided which members would be instrumental and which ones together would be able to re-found the fraternity.

Nine of us were chosen to stay.”

Forced to redesign and recruit, Fash was deemed the best candidate to usher the chapter through the fraternity’s

fragile stage, but received help from national members. The Ohio Theta chapter redesigned its executive board, adopted new bylaws and drafted new membership standards.

“We had a leadership consultant come in for eight weeks, he lived with us and re-did everything with us,” Fash said. “We got all the resources we needed because they’re used to restarting chapters, so essentially that’s what they did. They showed us how to do our positions from step one to two to three to four. He served as that role and mentored me and the other nine executives into our roles.”

Fash also went to a Phi Delta Theta

leadership conference in St. Louis during winter break. There, he collaborated with presidents from the 175 chapters nationwide. Brothers from around the nation contributed ideas for Ohio Theta’s redesign.

“Instead of reinventing the wheel, we’re sharing things — we’re working together,” Fash said. “We’re making that inclusive community, where we can help one another, share ideas, share information, share events.”

With approximately 20 Phi Delta Theta chapters within a three-hour drive of Cincinnati, the fledgling chapter used an extensive network of brothers close to home to contribute to helping restart the chapter.

The fraternity now has 22 official pledges, but is still informally recruiting men who live up to the Phi Delta Theta principals. ”We’re really focused on doing things right,” Fash said. “At this point we have our first large pledge class again, so we’re on our way to re-doing all the things inside our fraternity — building it up internally.”

But Phi Delta Theta doesn’t let just anyone in, the fraternity strives to involve members whose hearts and minds are in the right place.

“We look for men who are already on their way to becoming the greatest version of themselves, and are already here for a reason — that look to always learn and better themselves in their professional field, in their individual field, and learn more about the world around them,” Fash said.

The chapter’s vision for the 22 new pledges is to build on the foundation of men who already live out the cardinal principals of friendship, sound learning and most importantly, moral rectitude, Fash said.

“We want to make the whole Greek community, as a whole, larger and stronger and more connected,” Fash said.

“The reason we’re doing this — that I’m doing this — is to create that sense of community for every individual at the university, because there are so many people who don’t get involved — that don’t find people that they connect with — and they feel very estranged. They either don’t do well in college, or they transfer college, or they go somewhere else.”
