Kensley

Suddoo:

Express through creation The shy guy did not find any better way than to express himself through his accessory creations. Being so deeply fascinated by tribal cultures and extravagance, he made a breakthrough which has been mostly welcomed by Mauritian Designers and the greater public. He now wants to learn more and has moved to the Fashion and Design academy in India (FAD). In less than one year, Kensley Suddoo has forged himself the reputation of being the most extravagant Fashion Designer of his generation. Accessories Fashion Designer He made the intelligent choice of not doing only in clothes, a part of the Fashion Industry which already very much populated. After his studies, he opted to evolve in the Fashion Industry as an Accessories Fashion Designer. More an autodidact, he inspires himself from tribal and Indian ethnic and comes out with original mixes between different cultural styles and themes. I’m fascinated by tribes at the moment. I love looking at the different types of tribes and how they live, their clothing, their amazing colour palettes…everything! I’m in love with this idea of being a nomadic who lives in the future and so all these is making me visualise a next new collection. My never ending inspiration is Indian ethnic, love to add a small touch in almost all my designs says Kensley. The Fusion through ‘Indo Greek’ Since his entry in this fashion business, he has been supported by other Designers, Fashion Designers and Make Up Artists like Cedric Lanappe. Kensley shows

himself original in his work. He shows his signature by the jewelleries chosen, the accessories, added, the clothes to go with all this and the extravagant ways he dresses up his models. Pretty much perfectionist, he has shown some extent of his extravagance through his first Solo show ‘Indo Greek’ held in April last at the Henessy Park Hotel. Rather fussy about details in this cultural fusion, it took him two full months of research, accurate merging and confection. He made it A to Z and was acclaimed by the public, the professional and the press. Since he has been preparing himself for a bigger adventure. Further studies in India He has the will to become a better Fashion Designer. In order to extend his knowledge and curiosity, Kensley has enrolled in a one year course at the FAD in India. He says: “I believe that this course will help me to improve my knowledge in fashion and in marketing my confections. Being in India, I will surely get connected with the different cultures which will help me create more themes”. Through his Designs & Styling, the young man finds a good way to share the importance of culture. “Well I find culture is very important to preserve as it is our pride .I believe culture is always transferred through sharing so it means that for transferring the culture the sharing is must. So by sharing people will know about different cultures and will be keen to know more or even try dress like a specific culture” concludes Kensley.

She has grown up in the previous generation where “childhood games were running, playing basketball, football, volleyball, cycling and making tree huts. This is may be quick track record in athletics when I started 12-13 years with this discipline. My body was already used to pushing its limits and distrust every day. I was a professional athlete in Track & Field, and was the Estonian Youth Champion in the High Jump and 100m hurdles back then” she says. But unfortunately, an injury forced Merle to end her successful athletic career. She says she never makes any special effort to keep herself fit and keeping her mensuration more or less the same all year long. “All I do is eat good and healthy food mostly from organic farming. Silk ocean, bright sun, endless beaches surrounded by scenic nature…What can be closer to paradise than this fabulous picture. And where if not in Mauritius you can find all this beauty? For many people, this small island, hidden from all curious eyes, Mauritius, is the perfect location to celebrate the biggest gala day in their life: Their wedding. It was not an exception for Sergey and Anastasiya – young couple, that came to Mauritius from big Russia, to unite their hearts and souls in this idyllic place. From the first sight they fell in love with the island and this gave them an inspiration to share their passion with all the people who are just searching something perfect for their “big day”. And this couple is indeed lovely. The flutter, with which they treat each other, is felt through every breath they are making, through the pores of their skin, through their loving eyes. Later they told that choose this place; this small isolated island, without any hesitation, and they couldn’t imagine that this journey will be so unforgettable. Indeed, it is so wonderful to get married in the open air under a cloudless sky, with the Indian ocean behind you, and then to plunge into your honeymoon without having any heavy thoughts. “Our wedding was everything we had dreamed of; and I know that our wonderful photos will help us re-live that happy day again and again for many years to come,” says Sergey.

The strong willed.

The Fashion and Design Institute (FDI) couldn’t have got a better leader. Pushpanjali Luchoo, the Chairperson wants to contribute to bring the Mauritian Fashion Industry to other heights. She is striving hard since 2015 to make the Fashion & Design sector become the second Economy of Mauritius.

Photography: Saachin Sagar Text: Javed Sobah

Background She has taken this post because of her solid background in Arts and Education. Her first Graduation is a Bachelor in Arts from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, She then goes for Bachelor of Education at the Central Institute of Education at the Delhi University. She obtains her Master of Education at the same university. This education journey in India started in 2007 and terminated in 2012. She then has transferred her courses to Mauritius where her second year PHD is ongoing from the University of Mauritius E-Centre for Innovative and Lifelong Learning. From 2013 to 2016, she has been an educator at various state and private colleges, Friendship College Girls, SSS Bel Village, Mapou SSS, Dr Maurice cure, Sir Abdool Raman Osman SSS, Sharma Jugdambi SSS, Goodlands SSS. She continued her Educator life almost two years after having been nominated at the head of the FDI. The committed She stops in 2016 in order to give her full attention to her aims for this Institute and thickened her strategic plans for the betterment of the students, the image of FDI in Mauritius and the region of the Indian Ocean and the do’s and don’ts in driving the Fashion & Design Industry as a major sector of the Economy. “We have been coming with new and strong strategies to higher the status of the Fashion and Design Institute. Our struggle is still on. My aim is to make the Mauritian Fashion Industry become the second economy of Mauritius by making the FDI become one of the top protagonist in this process. We are climbing the ladders at a decent pace, but faster than the previous management” she says.

106

Major important changes To start with, the monthly Board Meeting became compulsory. “Filling that gap between the management and the students was a must. Now more attention is given to students and their needs. Being in constant contact with the management and myself, we assure a closer monitoring of students and all their queries and ideas are noted and reviewed” attests Pushpanjali Luchoo. Chance is being given to the students to express themselves and the opportunity to participate in Fashion shows organised by different institutions and with famous international designers like- China Mauritius Fashion show. International platform for students to showcase their designs. “Since 2015 the student intake increased from 100 to 382 in 2016. 2017 intake is more and for the first time, in 2017, we will have a dozen international students who will be joining. Admission for students with three credits at school certificate level are getting the chance to join the institute.

“ I am striving hard to make the FDI meet International Standards. ” We have also introduced three new Art & Design courses. As announced in the last Budget, under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, there will be more attention given to a School of Jewelry, which the FDI will be soon implementing. It fully integrates my strategy to bring forward Tailor Made courses to the various interests of FDI students” announces Miss Luchoo.

For now the staff is more implicated in helping students discover their creative talents and make them participating in local & international magazines. The change was also on the staff. As says the President, “There has been a lack of staffing and too many were on contract basis. There was also a misallocation of overtime and duties. Gradually it is changing, vacant posts are being field and fairness in overtime & responsibilities too”. Reshaping of FDI In order to make the FDI an awarding body, the board is working on a realistic academic calendar for 20172018 in line with tertiary Education. This will take effect as from this August. “It will be 1 week of induction program followed by 10 weeks of teaching and one study week of 5 days and a break of 2 weeks between each semester. This calendar will be repeated each year” says our interlocutor. For this year the FDI will be organizing two Fashion shows instead of one. The first one will be the traditional annual one but the second one will be addressed to fresh candidates and the ancients mixed. Also, as the School of Jewelry will be implanted, a competition on that will be incorporated. The board is working on the concepts of either Jewelry competition will be a competition only among the students of the School of Jewelry or a mixed team competition concept. FDI is gradually changing and some drastic change are also to come like a new building for the Institute. “The design of the building will reflect the originality of our students in the design field. There will be a competition among students who will come out with the most original yet realistic design of the new building. I am still working on this part”. Talking about Reshaping, Pushpanjali Luchoo does not keep mum on other drastic changes, “ The name and logo of the FDI need to be changed. People think of the FDI only as a Fashion School and unfortunately nothing more. As announced in the last budget, the School of Jewelry is to be integrated in the FDI. And it is completely legit to give an identity of this new entity in the name and logo. The School of Jewelry is only one mile stone. There is many more themed courses which will be regrouped in themed schools to come”. 108

Furthermore, the Board is working on the integration of new courses, new campus and Schools. The Communication & PR section is also working on new affiliations and Exchange Programs with diverse Institutes, for now, in India, Singapore and Africa. More severe courses The 2017 - 2018 curricula have been reviewed by the awarding body Pearson Education Ltd and on next enrolment they are going to be more severe. The Board from the United Kingdom has sent a delegation of Evaluators to analyse all FDI courses and worked produced in the five existing Faculties for Higher National Diplomas, i.e, Art & Design, Fashion & Textile, Media & Communication, Built in Environment and Foundation. “For the next enrolment these courses will be reinforced, new syllabuses will be added and thus will be more severe “says Pushpanjali Luchoo. Visions The Chairperson reveals herself to govern with an iron fist. “I cannot let any party to jeopardise my set approvals. This will slow down the pace I am trying to maintain. I am not criticizing the previous board but every member and existing students know that there was many lacks in the managerial style & ways. I have my set visions and, with the support of the board and the students, we will achieve it very soon” concludes Pushpanjali Luchoo. Headlines of her vision: Promote fashion and design industry on the local and regional zones, deliver qualitative and innovative courses, offer short courses of all faculties, introduce a scholarship, produce world class designers, contribute more in the textile industry, meet the job and market requirements and contribute in the economy and strive to make it become the second economy, come with an appropriate name and logo which will reflect the Institute, provide a new sophisticated building and lastly, to be among the world top 10 design Institutes. Pushpanjali Luchoo is at her first renewable mandate. She is to be followed…
