Reality breaks the ambitious As many, he also had dreams to pursue studies in an Art Academy and then continue studies In Law and Management. But reality dragged him back on earth, his family couldn’t afford such expenses. “I was disappointed for sure. I then decided to earn and save for” he reveals. He thus did what he was best in, that is, Art. His specialty, since he is 14 was to become a fulfilled Tattoo Artist and a reference in this particular field. His first canvas was himself, a tribal motive on his leg. “I had my equipment, I had my zeal, tattoo literate enough and I was then ready to perform my art on others” he says. Three in one Being a fresh actor in this field, he had to do other things to earn his life. So after school he pursued some crash course in Deejaying and Photography. At the same time he was doing networking for his career as a Tattoo Artist. And since he is three in one, Deejay, Photographer and Tattoo Artist. Akash, willing to become an entrepreneur, opened his first Event and Deejay Company, Aki Prod. He multiplies contracts and became well known in Event Organisation and Photography. “I was earning well by becoming the Official Photographer of the Teasers Night Club. And Deejaying was helping also. But I was feeling dissatisfied as I was performing lesser in Tattoo. By then I earned a good sum and decided to buy a car. But my creative mind was reproaching me too much, so I sacrificed that want of a car for a tattoo studio” It was last October and I chose the Orchard Centre in Quatre-Bornes to open my Studio 18. “I am satisfied now”, says Akash

The shy, timid and insecure He grew up in the Beauty Industry as his my mother is a beautician but he had the dream to become a Psychologist. But, let’s say, ‘fate’ conducted him into the Make-up field. “I started to try makeup Looks on Myself till I acquired the knowledge of working with make-up brushes as I heard that your tools are more important than products itself. I then enrolled for a short course at Marion Hair Club in Mauritius”. As many MUA’s he started with Bridals in Mauritius. But, being, then, a timid and insecure guy, Davin wasn’t really at ease to perform in front of other people, “I used to hide in the closet, afraid of others’ reaction of being a Male Makeup Artist” he says.
43
Crash Course in SA But now he is over it. “Now I do basically everything in the Make-up Industry from Basic Beauty Looks for Events and Editorial to Prosthetics for Film and Theatre”, he reveals. He moved to South Africa and had a one year crash course to learn from Basics to Special Effects from Abie Viljoen his mentor for the whole year, “we worked on set for various projects where I gained more skills and became more confident about myself as a Male Makeup Artist in this industry and also about my Art” he says. During his stay in South Africa, Davin joined and became Angel for Creative Angel Fashion Benefit where the association promotes young talents in need of support and sponsorships. “I really want to start doing this here in Mauritius to promote talented creatives in the Fashion and Film industry. This is my next goal and with the support of my work associates in South Africa I pray for concretization of this dream”. Being in South Africa he was flexible concerning Make-up Artistry as ‘THE MAKEUP ISSUE’ took him on stage for Fashion Shows where he had to do make-up application in 15 minutes per face, Backstage for Movies to prepare prosthetics and working with Celebrities and Amazing Make-up Brands.

He closely follows Make-up Brands, Senior Artists like Max Factor Sr who is one of best and one of his idols. “Make-up Artistry is not about repeating the same look over and over again, a true Make-up Artist is someone who gets inspired by other artworks and create their own unique looks” he attests. Every Make-up Artist has hisr opinions and techniques for Make-up Application, his is to always respect Skin Tone/Undertones and also correct eyebrows without overdrawing it. Back to Mauritius he created Haus of Davin, his new baby, a business where he promotes other creatives’ works. “I am the Creative Director, creating concepts for photoshoots and video shoots. With the help of my Associates in South Africa, Creatives in Mauritius would be able to be scouted in SA” hopes Davin.

Beauty is her
drug! Photography: Saachin Sagar Text: Javed Sobah
She has sacrificed an English Teacher’s career over her passion of beautician. After 16 years in France, she has returned to her homeland to continue her life’s aim. Let’s discover Vanessa Veerasamy, the beauty maker. She is a Communication and Administration degree holder from the Sorbonne University. Her aim was teaching and work in the Administration and Communication field. But being a passionate of beauty, “I’ve opted Make-Ups, Hairdressing and Nail Fashion. I worked in management of different beauty parlours in France and finally I owned two parlours at Meaux, near Disney Land” she declares. Back to the Roots Sixteen years later, and three years back from now, Vanessa decided to come back to Mauritius, as per her husband’s wish to settle here. They had a plot in Pointe aux Sables and constructed a nice villa near the sea. But her first love manifested, “Can’t stay away from it for long, I opened my beauty parlour, ‘Savana Parlour’, two years ago at Pointe Aux Sables” says Vanessa. She is now opening a new parlour in Floreal. She wants to better professionalise Make-Up, Hairdressing and Nail Fashion. “Beauty and nail fashion hasn’t yet reached its optimum here compared to Europe in terms of quality, techniques and high class service. This profession is famous and prevailing in France” she reveals. She also wants to teach as a Beauty Trainer, “My experience and further studies have enabled me to become a qualified trainer. It has always been my utmost priority to give the best to my clients including males, guiding them feeling better and with my knowhow, making them feel confident and more comfortable. That’s why I prefer teaching and prepare new comers” attests Vanessa. She invites men and women to discover her parlours and institutes in Pointe aux Sables and Floréal. She promises a mesmerizing experience from tip to her.

The Carefree She is fully at ease with herself. The president of the association Breast Care Centre is a total new Shamima at her late 40’s and lives the way she wants without caring about what people may say about her. “The thing is to be sincere and loyal to yourself. No one fully knows what I’ve been through and as no one can stop XYZ saying things, commenting and judging the new me, I also have the right to not let myself be affected…” she says. Survivor of a breast cancer, Shamima has had a tough time. She who was a carefree woman who welcomed life as it came hasn’t ever thought that she will be victim of such an illness. Mother of two daughters from her first marriage, she reveals she wasn’t at all happy in her second one: “I was a submissive woman ready to give up everything and try hard for a better couple life. But always taken for granted, no respect, no support… and this lasted 10 years. If I didn’t have cancer, I would have still be that unhappy women that I was. I am a Muslim woman who believes and have faith in my creator, but I am different and I take the responsibility on myself to live my life as I want. In a way I claim my difference, no one knows me better than I know myself ” Shamima says. Chemio and hysterectomy She was diagnosed cancer positive the 20th March 2010.” I told the specialist to take this shit out of my body, I did my first operation the 23rd March, that is, three days later” she says. She has had 6 session of Chemiotherapy, 40 sessions of Radiotherapy and even a hysterectomy because of the vulnerability of the uterus during the treatment “I lost my hair, my eyebrows and eyelashes. I had a husband who did not at all care about me and cheated on me. In a way I was alone in this fight. With no breast, I felt less feminine” she deplores. But she didn’t let herself get affected, “I was working, I travelled and I lived a rather normal life. But inferior complexes were here”. In 2013, she underwent a breast reconstruction operation and a New Shamima was born.

Birth of Breast Cancer Care Mrs ‘Lovelife’ was more down to earth, altruistic, conscious about the value of life, empathic, human… a woman who came out of her shell. She also cares about the physical and psychological health of other women victim of breast cancer. 12 March 2014, she founded the NGO Breast Cancer Care in Vacoas. She becomes the first Face of Breast Cancer in Mauritius and a reference of Breast Cancer. She was everywhere, billboards, TV, private radios, press, and internet. “I became the brand ambassador of Talia” she points out. She thanks the Media for the exposure they gave her and sponsors who supports her since. She even left her job as Manager at Variety Foods for this social mission which rather tough. From then to now, she has changed three location in Vacoas “there are more and more members joining the NGO” she says. They are women who have this cancer who come for a crash course and how to deal physically and important, psychologically with themselves. There are also men and women who are in social activities who want to be more aware of this cancer so as to better deal with other people suffering from this disease. Becoming the women voicing out on this topic was at start frustrating for Shamima. It is not question of what she was doing but the response she got from people, “the sad part of that is the disgusting comments of some frustrated people on my Facebook, like how can you talk about breast so openly. You will go to hell…”

Empowerment, recognition and awards In 2016 she got the support of the European Union for a big campaign in Mauritius and the Breast Cancer Care center in Rodrigues. November 2016 she was nominated, by Train to Gain, among the 100 most influential women. February she was nominated among the 50 most influential women by the Health and Wellness Congress and Awards, Mumbai. This year, she has again been chosen by Train to gain and will be figuring among the 100 most influential women in Mauritius. During these years “we have done a great job. My greatest satisfaction is that I have pushed women to become more engaged by empowering them. I can now delegate” she reveals. Shamima has got so many projects in the pipeline. Mentioning some of them, affiliation with international breast cancer NGO’s, open a new center for illtreated and abused children, and an association for women victim of domestic violence, “a cause that that reminds me my past!” says Shamima. “Anyway, society may not be fond of strong women who voice out, but I am as I am, a feminist, and women I am coaching may become like this also”. Love and chivalry Separated from her husband, Shamima has met a French guy named Phillipe with whom she is living a stable and beautiful relationship. “I couldn’t get a better life partner. I feel that I am lucky. He is caring, chivalrous, and respectful and makes me feel like I am a desirable woman and pushes me to be a more confident woman. This is a new chapter of my life and I want to live it to the fullest. We are both in love with each other and in love with Life, Love you Zindagi! “concludes Shamima Patel.

Fascination of Glamour World As mentioned, she has had many passion in life. “ Modelling is one of my passion, a dream that I’ve been nurturing since childhood, my fascination for the glamour world grew bigger day after day, but didn’t know where to start” says Artee. She first tried the Miss Mauritius but it wasn’t a success. She then became candidate for Mrs Mauritius, a big hit for her, entering finally in the glamour world. She became one of the finalist. Grow more in the fashion industry Life led her to move to the Seychelles Islands. Sometime later, she came back. Sill a fervent fan of Modelling, she did her first fashion show at the intercontinental bridal show. “I had my first best shoot with Saachin and it’s a huge honour for me to be shoot by such a great and professional photographer” she reveals. Actually a housewife, she wants to grow in the fashion industry, “and I’ll continue that way itself ” she tells. She also has a diploma in legal studies and has working experience in hotels industry in front line. I am also a big fan of ancient history like Egypt, about the pharaohs, the History of the Nazis intrigues me a lot also, big personalities like Churchill, Mata Hari, Giacomo Casanova and etc… Religion in general is very interesting but in more analytical way I would say. Here it is for her lesser important passions.
106
107
Driven by Yoga But her first passion which represent a guide in her everyday life remains Yoga. She discovered her tendency towards Yoga when she was 10. “It all started from very tender age, I remember I saw a yoga program on TV and it was a click, I started my first practice by watching the yoga program. Yoga is not only about twisting your body, it’s also the control of your breath. If you can control it then yoga is easy. Yoga is my self-control therapy” she attest. Being an asthmatic the breathing sessions was beneficial for her. She never misses an occasion to practice this way of living. Yoga taught her to better manage stress, negativity and crisis in general in here everyday life. “I don’t know if I see things differently than other women or men because I’ve been practicing since I’m a child. But what I can say is that I am a calm and serene person who can deal with every situation very calmly and objectively. What is great with Yoga is that it has grown my level of empathy”. I can feel positive and negative energies surrounding me” estimates Artee. She firmly believes that a person should start by loving and taking the greatest care of himself. Shooting at Yoga House For this shooting of the Artee, the Yoga Lover, the location of the peaceful space Yoga House at Domaine de Labourdonnais, Mapou was ideal. The place is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment where Yoga is accessible and practiced as a way of life. The program includes a variety of Yoga classes (Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Yin Yoga, Power Yoga), and Pilates classes (Postural, Flow, Barre), Workshops and Special Events taught with the deep knowledge and big heart of our team and guest teachers. The therapy concentrates on breathing techniques, movements and connection to the inner self. For now, “we have paused for a while the Holistic Healing” reveals Yoga House Director, Michael Currimjee.
