BOLD WINTER ESHA LUCHOOMUN STYLE URVASHI GOORIAH - MODEL OF THE MONTH JOHNNY AH YAN - FITNESS COACH BLOXXOM - BACKSTAGE FASHION SHOW

ISSUE 41 EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Newstylers, Your whole life, you have been told that you will be successful. Your teachers in school commented that your ability to work hard to get good grades would make you successful in your career.Your parents affirmed that you would be successful as you continued to do well in school and other extracurricular activities. But take a step back and ask yourself, “What does it mean to be successful?” The definition of success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. By definition: 1) You can’t be successful without having an aim or purpose (goal) first 2) Success is a result: a consequence of pursuing a goal 3) Therefore you can’t actually pursue success — you pursue goals, and then success follows.

Saachin Sagar

Director

So stop trying to pursue success! It is literally non pursuable. Pursuing success is like chasing the end of a rainbow. The location of the end of a rainbow is a matter of perception, and will always change when you are in motion. Similarly, when you go about life with the purpose of “being successful,” your definition of “success” will also be a matter of your own perception, and will always change while you are in motion. Stop. Go back, read that again, and let it sink in. Saachin Sagar Director

INTERVIEW WITH HAIRSTYLIST

SAMUEL ALEX DAVID “UP FOR A GOOD HAIR DAY WITH SAMUEL ALEX DAVID” Hairstyling is made of several specialized areas such as colour specialists, permanent hairdressers... But the specialization that inspires the most is that of the hairdresser... I invite you to discover through this interview with an expert, Samuel Alex David how does one manage to do this job or what kind of training to follow to have the required skills. Encounter… His name is Samuel Alex David. A 26-year-old resident of Quatre Bornes. He teaches art by profession and is also passionate about hairdressing and all types of art. At the age of 12, Samuel discovers a real passion for hairstyling. It all happened in a hairdressing studio as a trainee during weekends and school holidays and... He loved doing that. For the young man, the job of a hairdresser consists of ensuring that the customer has the best haircut or hairstyle that suits his personality and then advising him on the haircut or hair color he should have according to his morphology, personality and lifestyle. Samuel is very clear on one point: you don’t become a hairdresser by just following a course. Hairdressing is a lifestyle and it’s something you must love to do and be passionate about. It makes a huge difference and it shows in the work. The required skills? Being outgoing, empathetic, patient and creative. “I was the official hairdresser for the first edition of Vibe Moris produced by the MBC, and the official hairdresser for Miss Universe Mauritius He also hair styled the international beauty queen during her trip to Mauritius: Miss Eco International 2016, 2018, 2019 and Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong. A beautiful basket full of memories, isn’t it?

10

The young man claims to be proud to be the director of the Chi Haircare brand in Mauritius, recently introduced and distributed by Ben Hair and Beauty supplies in the country. This brand is made in the United States and is the official sponsor of Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA. “It is such an honour for me because this brand is amazing,” Samuel tells us. It’s his passion for hairdressing and making people love their hair and feel more confident that made him choose this job. The young hairstylist does a lot of bridal coiffure and it is invaluable to see the big smiles of the brides who love their hairstyle and feel confident and beautiful after Hans Dax and himself have made their whole magic happen. His philosophy as a hairstylist is to create a memorable experience and to give full satisfaction to his clients. A bad hair day is simply a bad day. Moreover, customers choose what they think is best for them. They want quality and Samuel does his best to provide the best services possible as well as being innovative. OBSTACLES? HE KNOWS NONE! “I DON’T THINK THERE ARE ANY BARRIERS. I THINK THE ONLY BARRIER MAY BE OURSELVES.” Newstyle magazine is a great support to him. He feels the same way for everyone else, according to him. “The magazine will definitely help me reach more people, promote my art and also help me discover who I am and what I do,” he says. Unlike many people, Samuel lives every moment of his life, and it’s very important for him to live every minute of his life and enjoy it to the fullest. “You can be whatever you want to be if you have the motivation to make things happen. And anything is possible in life.”

INTERVIEW WITH

ESHA LUCHOOMUN “TAKING A POSITIVE APPROACH TO LIFE HAS AN IMPACT ON THE PHYSICAL SIDE!” Having natural looking hair as a woman in the modeling industry can help you stand out, but it also comes with challenges. Many hair stylists for photo shoots and runway shows are not trained to work with different hair textures - a dilemma that 17-year-old model Esha Luchoomun Ghanishta Marie knows well enough. Living in Solitude, Esha told Newstyle magazine how she adopted her natural hair, the difficulties that arise in an industry that isn’t always welcoming - or trained in - natural beauty, and why she continues to celebrate her look despite these problems. Esha is a final year college student who enjoys modeling in parallel with his studies. Small escapades during the school holidays are not put aside for her hobby. She started modeling at the age of 15, thanks to her family who pushed her to get started, especially her mother and sister whom she says she never stops thanking. “I think I’ve achieved a few things like working with organizations I never thought I would. Seeing myself on billboards, at bus stops and my family congratulating me brings me great joy,” she says. Despite her young age, Esha has a basic interest in fashion in general. With her offbeat style, it’s hard for her to go unnoticed. “I like to have my own style and stand out,” she mentions. Since two years now, she’s been doing fashion shows and photo sessions. “I don’t know exactly how many shows I have been doing but I have already performed at the Henessy Park Hotel and Au Ruisseau créole Rivière Noire,” explains the young lady. Esha, however, maintains that although she has a great passion for the profession, she is not thinking of making a career out of it. What she wants is to focus on her studies. Modeling is simply a way for her to finance her studies in the future. Nevertheless, she thinks it would be beneficial to give more opportunities to others because it’s often déjà vu when there are so many other people with innovative ideas and potential. “In my opinion there are not too many changes in the modeling scene in Mauritius. The ideas are there but often unfinished,” she says. But how does one become a model? What are the assets to have? According to Esha, it’s the impact that everyone has for commercials and other things. She maintains that one must be professional and attentive to succeed in giving the result that the client expects. For a catwalk show, a good look is the key, as is confidence and a good approach. “The most important thing is self-confidence!”

Newstyle magazine helped Esha a lot in this area. Like everyone else she’s thinking of developing her own projects in the future and will try to include fashion in them. Her studies are her main projects for the future because education is a universal key that opens almost all doors. “Newstyle is one of the best in Mauritius in my opinion. I really appreciate the fact that it gives the chance to new people, talent and also faces. There is innovation in all new editions. I thank the magazine for giving me the chance to share my look.” To her younger sisters who are considering modeling like her, Esha is more than encouraging. Having grown up fast enough for her age through her parents’ education, she would advise these youngsters to get informed first. She gets a lot of knowledge before starting a new project to avoid trouble. “ This universe is beautiful seen from the other side but you have to know that there are also its bad sides : poorly paid shootings, agencies that exploit the models. I would advise people potentially interested to inform themselves about the laws and conditions because it is above all a job. It is your image and reputation that is used and as for any job it deserves to be humbly paid. But if you’re really ready for it, it’s an extraordinary experience waiting for you.” There you go!

INTERVIEW WITH

Urvashi Gooriah

MODEL OF THE MONTH & MISS MAURITIUS 2018 She is barely 21 years old and yet she has come a long way. Model and former crowned Miss Mauritius Urvashi Gooriah has a lot to be happy about. She spends most of her time studying or modeling. Urvashi Gooriah, is also a University student and is originally from Beau-Bassin. Meet her...

Priyanka Chopra also remain models that the young woman admires for their kindness, culture, faith in education and inspiring experiences that have allowed them to carve out a path on their own to become a global icon. “They inspire me never to contemplate failure,” she explains.

Urvashi Gooriah found herself in the modeling world thanks to the good people she met along the way. Training in modeling, does not yet exist in Mauritius. Being named Miss Mauritius at the age of 19 was a life-changing experience. Going from a carefree person to someone bearing the name of the country - it was all her very first and some of those moments include - the night of the Grand Final itself, her first time as a host alongside Sophia the Robot, the World Travel day in Mauritius and how she helped by giving a voice to certain causes as Lifebuoy Ambassador. She expected to get exactly what she did. So happy is she that her work, efforts and performance have been honored with this title, especially among a group of extraordinary girls. “I have always been an independent person. It was personal because it was my childhood dream to become Miss Mauritius and fortunately my mother and family supported my dreams,” she says. If she had to compare past experiences with other Miss, Urvashi would be unable to do so. The main reason is simply that they were all unique in their own way, all talented and beautiful in their individual ways.

The most important event for her lately has been her trip to London to wear her country’s name in the Miss World pageant. It was so important to her because she was standing on the same platform as some of the people to watch used to stand. And she just wanted to make sure that she properly represented the beauty, diversity and culture of her homeland to the rest of the world.

Competitions such as Miss Mauritius are often blamed for emphasizing certain beauty standards, particularly physical aspects. Urvashi, strongly believes that beauty is subjective and that this contest encompasses more than the image we have to offer, rather than our body or the shape we take - it is a whole. In addition, beauty contests such as this one give young women a platform to shape their opinions about what we want - whether it is modeling, politics or entrepreneurship. And we must also bear in mind that there is always room for constructive criticism. Furthermore, we all have a role model in life that we wish to follow. “Each of the Miss Mauritius was unique in her own way, leaving behind a different legacy. But one of my favourites remains Ameeksha Dilchand for the way she used her platform for her career, the love she has for her country and her love for pageants to train and help young girls in their modeling career or in beauty contests,” says our young Miss. Michelle Obama and

Urvashi’s biggest flaw...or what might be a quality for some? She tends to be very perfectionist and stubborn when it comes to something she really wants, even when people tell her that she does things the wrong way. “I tend to test my visions first before exploring others. I don’t mind trying again and again... and again until I succeed. This takes up a lot of my time, but it’s always worth it. Also, I tend to take relationships and friendships very seriously. It’s always the people I love more than anything,” says our beautiful Miss. For Urvashi, appearing in Newsyle magazine this month could give her a good professional portfolio that will boost her confidence and give her more visibility for her future projects. In addition, education remains the top priority for her. Once she graduates it’s her master’s degree all the way up to her PhD while using her title of Miss to do the things she loves; like modeling and soon her own business. “If you love fashion and want to be part of it, you will find a way. Believe in yourself and never let anyone make you feel you’re not enough. Everything you need to succeed is already in you.”
