INTERVIEW WITH SANJEET BOOLELL A GUILDED ART STORY Sanjeet Boolell, it’s impossible not to know his name and to attach the most fashionable and extravagant looks to it. Without him, would the biggest fashion shows have had the same success? Not for sure. Interview with a star of style who answered our questions with warmth and enthusiasm. Sanjeet Boolell, 36, is a fashion designer and creative director at Guilded Art. Being an Aquarian who tends to get lost in his own thoughts, most of his friends and family call him “The Thinker” or sometimes an over-thinking person. For Sanjeet, getting lost in his own thoughts is a great source of inspiration for his own creativity. Sanjeet Boolell studied fashion design for five years, three of which were spent in Melbourne, Australia and obtained a Master’s degree in fashion in Milan, Italy. There are many things that keep him motivated and constantly inspired. Among them are his works of art across painting, photography, music, films and the outdoors. During his last collaboration and exhibition, Sanjeet presented 17 looks for the 7th anniversary of the Hennessy Park Hotel. The collection was a winter line of men’s and women’s clothing. And recently, he did a shoot with Sachin Sagar for the new issue of the magazine New Style. Obviously, every stylist needs to have a crush in terms of look. “I have a lot of favorites but not the typical celebrities. For example, FKA Twigs, Courtney Love, Nicholas Sirkis of Indochina, Björk, Arca, Skin of Skunk Anansie, Maynard James Keenan, Cara Delevingne, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin and many others,” he recalls. The reason? They stick to what represents their own personality. They don’t always follow trends and if they do, they always do it with a difference twist that could potentially create a trend. It’s often something you can either love or hate. In addition, Sanjeet argues that the most important quality to possess in terms of style is assembling in styling. Choosing the right pieces for a consistent look, from clothing to accessories to hair and makeup. Thus, in order to stay on top of the latest trends, Sanjeet not only looks at the latest work of stylists and other artists, but also keeps up to date with the latest international news.

We all learn from our mistakes and know how to minimize the risk of making the same mistakes as in the past. As a result, Sanjeet remembers once having made pants for a customer with the wrong choice of materials. The end result was not at all what the customer had in mind. “It was my fault, so I just had time to cut and sew a new pair with the right material. I almost made it. Luckily, she was satisfied with the final result of the second attempt. I have to point out that this happened when I first started my business,” he adds. Tough days also exist in this business. “I had a couture dress to make and deliver in a week and a half. Typically, a couture dress with endless hours of hand work takes at least a month to make since my staff and I work eight hours a day. In those days, we worked very long hours every day until very late at night in order to finish the dress on time. It was not impossible but there is always a price to pay for express orders! » Nevertheless, when a customer has planned a certain make-up and hairstyle, Sanjeet creates, as a stylist, an elaborate or minimalist piece or outfit. He explains that all aspects must complement each other. Once an outfit is finished, if there is a conflict with the hairstyle and makeup, it is usually better to modify the makeup and hairstyle rather than rebuild an entire outfit from scratch for the look. However, unless clients are a MUA and a hairstylist for whom an outfit must be designed and created for a specific theme. It’s such a feeling of satisfaction to have accomplished something. There is no greater achievement for Sanjeet. He personally believes that each achievement has its own greatness, no matter what the challenges and obstacles. As such, he has had the pleasure to showcase collections since 2010, both in Mauritius and abroad. His first showcase took place in 2010 in Mauritius, during an international show with local and international designers. Over the years, other lines have been presented in India, Cape Town, Munich, Leipzig and London, and recently here in Mauritius, during Hennessy Fashion Week last year and this year for the 7th anniversary of Backstage Lounge Bar at Hennessy. The three tips that Sanjeet would give to someone? To stay focused, never get distracted after completing each task, believe in oneself and repeat these three tips over and over again. Although we are living in the midst of a pandemic, with all the risks of destroying the economy that this implies, his plans for the future are to continue to work on expanding his business. One of the future steps is to invest in more production capacity. “Newstyle magazine is a platform that has helped her and is still helping her to make people aware that Guilded Art is always at the service of existing and potential customers. A message for our readers? “Never miss an issue of New Style.”

INTERVIEW WITH MARIO GUILLOT THE MAN BEHIND IV PL@Y! Mario Guillot! This name may not ring a bell. But it’s been ringing in the Mauritian fashion world for a while. This man with magic fingers creates fascinating drawings. His new collections have left no one indifferent for several years. Through this interview, he unveils himself to you. Mario Guillot, 55 years old, is a designer. In 1987, he started to draw professionally and worked as a senior designer in a company specializing in leather clothing in Melbourne, Australia for seven years. In 1993, Mario returned to Mauritius and established IV PLAY brand which was a real craze on the island - and quickly grew to become a chain of stores and retail franchises in Mauritius and abroad. While many designers are selftaught, Mario confesses that he studied fashion design in France after winning the Cambridge scholarship in Mauritius. “I was already making my own clothes as a hobby, which led me to this choice of career,” he explains. Being curious is what keeps the handsome man motivated every day. Being open-minded in order to be amazed by innovation and beauty is also important to him. “I confess that I still have the feeling that my best design has not yet been created,” he says. His latest collaboration was with the Mauritian artist Gael Froget for the creation of LOVE GURU, a streetwear T-Shirt line that has been developed together. In August, Mario and Gael presented their collection at the Hennessy Park Hotel for a fashion show - a great success! Unlike many fashion figures, Mario has never really had any real idols although he is influenced by all kinds of people, from the most to the least fashionable. “I believe that style is more important than fashion because style conveys personality and taste,” he says. The most important quality to have when it comes to style? Good taste, sense of perspective and self-confidence. In order to stay up to date about the latest trends, Mario doesn’t make a great effort. He argues that trends come and go. He only responds to those who talk to him. He feels things and tries not to comply with society’s rules. “I like the quality of the design, the cut and the craftsmanship.”

Making mistakes, we all do! Even the best designers. In fact, we had been looking for one committed by Mario in the course of his duties. “ One time, we got feedback on a style of jeans that ripped on the corner of the back pocket because the stone wash was too strong. We had 1,000 jeans that were potentially unsaleable; a terrible loss. After spending a few days sleeping on them, I decided to ruin them even more by patching the pockets, cutting off the zipper, the money pocket and the weird loops. I turned what was a defect into a design element and named them DISASTER. These jeans flew off the shelves and had to be rebuilt several times with the same “defects”. It was magical!” Mario’s greatest achievement so far is probably the creation of IV PLAY brand from scratch, without financial means, with a lot of passion and a lot of courage. He built what was to become one of the most respected brands locally and developed franchises in seven different countries. There was no real long-term plan, but rather an organic approach. They grew for the first 17 years. In addition, Mario had the opportunity to participate in many major events. He was invited to showcase his brand in Senegal at an international fashion event a few years ago, which was a very rewarding experience. There were designers from all over the world and they did not go unnoticed. “For the love of denim” is a brand that is still very young and needs to be discovered and understood. “Newstyle can certainly help showcase the team’s expertise and flair for design, as well as educate customers about the world of high-end raw denim. We hope that our passion will be contagious!” says Mario. A message to the readers? “You now have a one-stop shop for all your denim needs. We can even create a unique item just for you with our Laboratory line. Visit us at https://gurify.store. For the pleasure of denim! Free shipping worldwide.”

INTERVIEW WITH

SARAH BUNDHUN

MODEL OF THE MONTH Could you introduce yourself? My name is Sarah Bundhun, 23 years old, a communications, media and journalism student who also works in Freight Logistics at DHL Global. I am a model and also the first runner-up of Miss Eco International Mauritius 2020.

Tell us about your passion for the fashion industry. Fashion is one of my greatest interests since I was a kid. I grew up with people telling me that I should be modeling. In fact, when I was a child, I wore my mother’s clothes and heels to do a fashion show in front of the mirror. Then, when I started to take things more seriously, I started spending hours watching fashion shows where they defined fashion as an art worn by models through the designs, the makeup, the hairstyle and the way it is expressed. In addition, I am a very shy and introverted person and fashion shows helped me become more confident and break down the walls and barriers I had built around me. Every time I walk up the runway, it’s a whole new adventure, from meeting new people to making new friends. And when you can’t sleep at night thinking about something and feel excited about it, you know it’s definitely your passion. Tell us about your first steps in modeling. It all started when I was discovered on Facebook by Siddiquah Rujak who asked me to join her at the Makeup Show in December 2018. It was an amazing day and I am very grateful to her for seeing something special in me. Your experiences in this field so far? After my debut in the fashion modeling world in December 2018, I was contacted by some clothing brands and some independent photographers to work with them. It was easy to work with them because they were the best, we worked while having fun. So, I made some memories of the trip until today.

How do you feel about being named “Model of the Month” by Newstyle magazine? Well, receiving the title of “Model of the Month” is a great achievement in itself. Most importantly, I think it will increase awareness of my work and will certainly help me in my future projects as a role model. How do you plan to take benefit of this title in the coming days/months/years ? It is a new step in my journey as a model and it will always remain memorable. It will help promote the prestigious Newstyle magazine to my family, friends and colleagues. followers. Also, to encourage models who aspire to become “Model of the Month” to keep following their dreams because dreams do come true. What does your family think of this choice of environment? My mother has been very supportive from the beginning. She has encouraged me and supported every step I took into the fashion world. In fact, my mom did a bit of modeling in her twenties so she really wanted me to move forward. At first, my dad was reluctant because he is very protective towards me and because of the stereotypes created around the fashion industry. I explained to him how it is and I would make him proud. Finally, when I won the title of first runner-up to Miss Eco International MRU 2020, he has been very proud of me and is now very supportive. Do you have any other passion besides modeling? Not really a passion, but hobbies like reading books and singing. Any upcoming projects? For the time being, I have some proposals to participate in fashion shows and to appear in another magazine as well, but not yet confirmed. That’s why I will talk about them as soon as they are finalized.

Your first big fashion show and first big photoshoot? My first big fashion show was for Bollywood the heart of current fashion at Backstage in which I also have my first big photo shoot which was then featured in the 22nd issue of Newstyle magazine itself in 2018.

LUVINE ITTOO

LIFE AT 1000 KM/H Aged 26, Luvine Ittoo is an accountant and sports enthusiast. He contributes to the serenity of numbers in the morning and in the afternoon he’s a weightlifting beast. Portrait of a man who lives at 100 per hour. When the days are stressful and hard at work, it is advisable to go to a room and evacuate all the needed stress. Luvine Ittoo knows this. Between fitness and weightlifting, he is happy with it. And it’s the best way to say it! These equipment have no secret for him. “I’ve been in fitness for many years now and training is what I’m passionate about,” he says. An activity that has allowed him to shape his body. It didn’t make him look like Hulk, but rather like Jason Statham for his catwalks. That’s right girls, this handsome man also works as a freelance model, sometimes doing photo and video shoots in his spare time. Okay, come on... calm down! Luvine is not a competitive beast. “ It is simply a lifestyle, as they say in English.” The coach doesn’t describe himself as a bodybuilder. “I like my body to be well shaped.” The difference between a fitness enthusiast and a bodybuilder is that a bodybuilder competes. This is not the case for our athlete. “I compete with myself. Bodybuilders are in competition with others,” says the resident of Quatre-Bornes. “I don’t have the massive size but I have the body of an athlete.” This attracts the attention of others and pushes those who wish to have a dream figure to ask for it at the gym. “My body makes it easier for me to introduce myself to people.” In his teenage years, he practiced martial arts. Little by little, the young man was introduced to bodybuilding and that’s how this passion grew stronger. What he likes most about fitness is having a goal in mind and pushing himself while doing the sport. Also, the discipline, dedication and consistency that ultimately leads to a fitness goal. Winner of the best student award in Quatre Bornes in 2016, Luvine also won the award for outstanding male figure in 2016. His greatest pride to date.

But what would a typical day look like for a man whose life goes at 1000 an hour? “I wake up at 6 in the morning. I eat oats mixed with almonds and peanut butter for breakfast. I prepare my food for the day as well as my protein drink. I have a milkshake and some fruits at 10 a.m. and then my lunch at noon. I have a dark coffee around 3 p.m. with some cookies and dark chocolate. I do a pre-workout before going to the gym; another protein shake after the workout is a must. My last meal is a light dinner around 9pm. I don’t have a lot of time in the day to train, so I really want to burn off a lot of calories in a short period of time,” he says. Besides, who says fitness lover also says...diet! For Luvine, a protein drink is a must after any workout. However, the food and supplements you take before and after workouts depend on your body type. Because our bodies react differently to different types of foods and supplements, some people may need to consume more carbohydrates and calories, while others may not. However, Luvine admits to cheating sometimes! This is the day he gets to eat whatever his stomach wants! He makes sure this only happens once a week. “Cooking after an intense workout is a real struggle,” he admits. Being featured in Newstyle magazine is a way for Luvine to inspire young people who also want to adopt a healthy and fit lifestyle. He also argues that it may be a good start to his fitness journey, this time not only as a fitness enthusiast, but also as a fitness influencer who will encourage people to achieve their dream physique. A message for readers? “Everyone has to start somewhere. You can start now. Crush that defeatist attitude and replace it with renewed determination and motivation! Believe in yourself, because if you don’t, no one else will.”
