What is Telehealth? Telehealth is the use of technological advancements such as mobile devices and computers in the healthcare industry to enable patient access healthcare services at the comfort of their homes. With telehealth patients can remotely exchange their health data or information with their physicians something that has helped in diagnosis and monitoring of long-term or chronic conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, chronic heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.


Major features of telehealth Mobile or fixed home units that help in measuring and monitoring body physiological and metabolic changes such as pulse rate, blood pressure, temperature and other vital signs that can help determine the progress of a certain condition. Such data or information is forwarded for clinical review at a remote location by the use of wireless technology or phone lines.


Examples of telehealth services Patient portal- This offers a more secure online communication channel between the patient and his or her physician. Through online patient portals, the patients can communicate with their clinicians about their health, request prescription refills, review test results and also schedule appointments. Virtual appointments- These are appointments where patients can see their doctors or nurses via video conferencing. Through virtual appointments, patients can receive ongoing care from their physicians when in-person visits are not necessary or not possible. Another form of virtual appointment includes webbased visits.


Remote monitoring - Involves use of information tech and communication for remote monitoring of patient health without the need to visit a care facility. It involves the use of wearable devices, sensors, and web-based mobile apps. Personal health apps - They help organize patient health information in one secure place. Physicians talking to other physicians - Physicians can also take advantage of technological advancements to help improve the quality of care. They can virtually consult other physicians in case they have questions about a certain diagnosis or treatment.


Difference between Telehealth, E-health and Telemedicine Telehealth, E-health, and Telemedicine are healthcare terms which are interchangeably used without knowing they are different. Each of them refers to a different mode of administering care through healthcare technology.


Telehealth Telehealth represents the wide range of technological services that help provide patient care as well as improve healthcare delivery system. It can also refer to non-clinical services offered by clinicians such as administrative meetings, provider training, and continued medical education in addition to clinic-based services. Telehealth is different from telemedicine since it refers to a wider scope of remote healthcare services than telemedicine.


Telemedicine Telemedicine refers to only clinical healthcare services. It involves two-way electronic communication between patients and their providers with the use of video and audio equipment without the need to visit the doctor office. The telemedicine impacts mainly focused on medical consultation, follow-up visits, medication management and management of long-term or chronic conditions.


E-health E-health is the broad term that is used to explain everything related to medicine and computer technology. It is characterized attitude, state of mind, a way of thinking, global thinking and commitment to help improve healthcare regionally, locally and globally through the internet and its related technologies. E-health is used to explain the promises and new possibilities internet of things opens to the health telehealth industry.
