New Tampa Schools Honored At Annual District Awards! By Matt Wiley Despite a recent FCAT score scare at some public schools in Hillsborough County, several New Tampa schools are being recognized for their excellence in education. For example, Paul R. Wharton High’s Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) was recently recognized as the best in the Hillsborough County School District at the annual Hillsborough County Council PTA/PTSA Awards Luncheon on May 30 at Lowry Park Zoo. And, Wharton principal Bradley Woods was recognized as Hillsborough’s High School Principal of the Year — for the second year in a row! “It’s quite an honor to be selected,” says Woods of his second consecutive Principal’s award. “It’s both overwhelming and humbling. I feel like I just show up every day and try to do what’s right for the kids. I’ll be here at

An editorial by Gary Nager As our regular readers know, we have conducted an extremely popular Reader Dining Survey & Contest virtually every year since 1994 in the New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News. There are some r ules, however. 1) You can only enter this contest on our website — no mailed, emailed or faxed entries, please! 2) Each person can only submit one (1) entry, but up to four other people in the same household may also enter/vote. 3) You can vote for one business in one category or place a vote in every category and you will receive one entry into our contest for each category in which you cast a vote. 4) You can enter the contest any day between now and September 30. 5) No matter how many categories you fill in, you must include your name, address, the community you live in (Meadow Pointe, Seven Oaks, etc.), your daytime telephone number and a valid e-mail address or all of your votes will not count!

Your Business Can Benefit!

We created this contest to help promote area businesses, which, of course, is our primary goal in virtually everything we do. So, if you want your business to get more votes than just the ones you and your friends submit, we are offering a special discount for new New Tampa Neighborhood News advertisers who sign a new agreement for at least four issues during the summer months. That discount increases if you agree to run your ad for at least six issues. And yes, we will gladly banner your ad with a “Please Vote for Us in the 2012 ‘Best (dry cleaner, wine shop, etc.) of New Tampa’ Contest!” In our January 3 and January 14, 2013, issues, we will announce not only the winners, but also the runners-up and third-place vote-getters, in each category. And, in each 2013 issue in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, we will guarantee to run at least one full-length feature story

about one of our category winners. We know the businesses will appreciate not only the honor of being named a category winner, but also the opportunity to have their business featured in a great feature story which will appear, not only in print, but also on our website. So, I really do hope you will visit NTNeighborhoodNews.com to check out the complete r ules and entr y form — and please tell your friends to get out and vote, too!

I’m Tr uly Sor r y, Cindy!

I would really be remiss if I didn’t make a little more than my usual public correction/apology for published errors, as one story last issue — written by yours truly with the best of intentions — somehow went terribly awry. And, the errors definitely were entirely my fault. I’ll admit that our last New Tampa deadline was more traumatic than most, but it’s still no excuse for this level of screw-up. At any rate, my sincere apologies go out to owner Cindy Kozlowski of You Do the Dishes (YDTD), which makes my flubs so much worse because we’re literally about four doors from each other, in the same plaza. Anyway...here goes: Cindy and her long-time friend, YDTD marketing director and artist/educator Herb Pinder aren’t married, which I somehow pulled from my ever-aging subconscious because of one story we wrote a few years ago that had the same...um...

misinformation. Yeesh. But, I didn’t stop there. Folk art isn’t this year’s only Summer Art Fest theme, it’s one of the themes Herb is teaching kids who participate in YDTD’s unique art program this summer, which includes pottery painting, but not pottery making. Double yeesh. And finally, the “program” Cindy offers in conjunction with The Soap Factory in Tampa Palms is simply that if you make a bar of soap at The Soap Factory, you get a reduced price on a paint-ityourself soap dish at YDTD. For correct info about YDTD, call 975-1700 or visit YouDoTheDishes. com. And, please tell Cindy that a certain idiot editor sent you!

N EW T AMPA Young Wesley Chapel Man Dies In New Tampa Crash

A Wesley Chapel man is dead after losing control of his vehicle and rolling off the road during the early hours of June 5. According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), just after midnight, 19-year-old William Gallagher, of the Country Walk community of Wesley Chapel, was driving with two passengers-16-year-old Charles Trimbl of Tampa and 21-year-old Camron Davis, also of Wesley Chapel-when he lost control of his 1998 Honda coupe on Wild Tamarind Dr. in the K-Bar Ranch area of New Tampa near the Pasco County line. Police say that when the car rolled, Gallagher was partially ejected from the vehicle and pinned underneath it. He was pronounced dead at the scene when help arrived. Trimbl was taken to Florida Hospital Tampa with non-life-threatening injuries. Davis, the eldest in the vehicle, fled the scene. The accident is still under investigation, but, according to TPD, speed is thought to have been a factor in the fatal accident.

News Briefs New Watering Restrictions

Even though our area has received more rain in recent weeks than it did throughout the whole of spring, new water use restrictions have been issued for the Tampa Bay area, including residences and businesses in both New Tampa and Wesley Chapel. The new restrictions, which limit water use to one day per week for 16 counties, are part of what is called a “Phase II Water Shortage Emergency,” issued by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (aka “Swiftmud”). The restrictions will be in effect until July 31, but could go on longer, depending upon the amount of rain the area receives during that period. Those in violation of the restrictions can face a fine of up to $450 and have to appear in court. According to Swiftmud officials, the new restrictions apply not only to private residences, but also to restaurants — which are being asked to only serve glasses of water to customers by request. The restrictions even affect local drinking fountains, which are only allowed to be in service for four hours per day. In addition, homeowners associations are being required to

suspend regulations that require members to use water, such as replacing lawns or pressure washing. The single watering days per week for residences and businesses are to be determined by the last number in their addresses, and all watering must be done either before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m. For a detailed chart with watering schedules, please visit the Swiftmud website at SWFWMD.State.Fl. fell onto a power line along Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and knocked out power to thousands of New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residences and businesses for several hours. According to TECO, the outage was first reported at 3:48 p.m. The temporary blackout caused problems not only for those at home or at work, but also for drivers, as traffic lights along Cross Creek Blvd. from Morris Bridge Rd. to BBD and north along BBD from Cross Creek Blvd. to County Line Rd. sat powerless or flashed a cautionary yellow until power was restored. The Tampa Police Department (TPD) dispatched several officers to help keep traffic flowing. As a result of the power outages, everal businesses along BBD had to turn customers away, including the busy Walmart Supercenter located at the intersection of BBD and Regents Park Dr. TECO spokesperson Cherie Jacobs says that power was restored to some customers within as little as 30 minutes, but some had to wait as long as two hours. — MW

Lights Out In New Tampa

Hurricane season has begun early this year, as New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents definitely now know, following a recent afternoon without power, which was restored in about two hours. Strong thunderstorms from Subtropical Storm Beryl dumped heavy rains and left more than 2,500 Tampa Electric Company (TECO) customers without power on May 29. After a day of downpours, the weight of a large bird’s nest became more than it could hold. The nest, home to either a hawk or an osprey,

FDOT Hosts ‘Open House’ To Give Public Update On Projects By Matt Wiley Gusts of wind blow through the breezeway of the recently opened northbound I-75 rest area between S.R 56 and S.R. 54, as representatives of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) show off the final plans for the I-75 and I-275 widening projects, which have been under way for a more than a year now. During the FDOT Open House on May 22, the public was given a peek at the projects that can currently be seen as construction along the sides of both busy interstates. Although there was not a formal presentation, several projects were on display in the form of presentation boards that gave aerial views of what the future of the interstates will look like. “We usually have (these open houses) after construction begins,” said FDOT spokesperson John McShaffrey. “Once construction starts, the projects become more ‘real’ to folks.” The biggest project on display was the widening of the 11.4-mile stretch of I-75 from south of Fowler Ave. to S.R. 56 from four lanes on

each side to six lanes in both directions. In addition, to make it easier for drivers to merge onto the interstates, the sections near the interchanges of Fowler, Fletcher and BBD will be widened to eight lanes. The $95-million project began in October of 2011 and should be finished by the spring of 2016. McShaffrey said that this project is going to be completed before it was initially slated to begin, as it was not in the five-year plan. According to FDOT, in addition to widening the interstate, the project also includes improvements to lighting and drainage, resurfacing of existing lanes, construction of retention ponds and the installation of Intelligent Transportation System components including cameras, vehicle detectors and message signs to give important information to drivers. Another project that was on display was the widening of I-75 from south of S.R. 56 to north of C.R. 54, in which the 4.3-mile stretch of interstate is being widened from its current four lanes total to four lanes in each direction (eight total). The $22.5-million project began in March of 2011 and should be completed by the end

This was one of the presentation boards showing the plans for the widening of I-75 presented by the Florida Dept. of Transportation at a recent public Open House. of the year, concurrent with the completion of the work on both the C.R. 54 and S.R. 56 interchanges. Information also was provided on currently unfunded projects which will, in the future, widen I-75 to at least three lanes in both directions all the way north, through both Pasco and Hernando Counties, to the Florida Turnpike. Since they are unfunded, these projects will be added to the FDOT's “five-year work plan” only as funding becomes available. McShaf-

frey said that the funding for these interstate projects has come from “gas taxes.” As far as I-275 is concerned, the 5.7-mile stretch between Bearss Ave. and the apex with I-75 interchange is being widened to three lanes in each direction. The $20.6-million project began in January 2011 and is on schedule for a fall 2012 completion. For more informatio about these projects, please visit DOT.State.FL.US.

Cypress Creek Town Center To Boast Chic Outlet Mall By 2014! By Matt Wiley New Tampa residents may finally have a chic outlet mall in their backyards by 2014, eliminating the need to drive more than an hour south to the Ellenton Premium Outlets. After years of legal battles, it looks as if the Cypress Creek Town Center Development of Regional Impact (DRI), the undeveloped property at the interchange of I-75 and S.R.s 54 & 56 in Wesley Chapel, will finally be home to an outlet mall to be built by the Simon Property Group. In a press release on May 14, Simon announced that it would be opening seven new locations of the popular clothing outlet Saks Fifth Avenue “OFF 5TH” at many of its new and existing outlet malls. Among the new locations on the list is a mall called Tampa Premium Outlets, located in Wesley Chapel, more commonly referred to until now as Cypress Creek Town Center, scheduled to open sometime in 2014. However, a spokesperson for the Pasco County Land Development Department claims that, “There have been no official plans submitted to the county from Simon about the mall.”

10

The company that developed the Prime Outlets at Ellenton is expected to open a new outlet mall in Wesley Chapel by 2014. The only information the office would confirm was that Simon had met with the County a few months back, as previously reported in the New Tampa Neighborhood News. The press release is the first hard evidence that plans are finally moving forward for vertical development of the site, which appears to finally have overcome the many environmental issues that have kept the project at a halt since 2007.

The site has been sitting in predevelopment limbo since 2007 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

revoked the building permit it had issued to the Richard E. Jacobs groupthe development company that owns the property-after muddy runoff water was discovered leaking into Cypress Creek. The environmental watchdog group the Sierra Club of Tampa Bay sued the Army Corps for violating the Clean Water Act in 2007 and the lawsuit ended up making its way to a Federal Appeals Court in November 2011. The decision by the Appeals Court reversed the previous ruling that revoked the Jacobs Group's mall permit and allowed development to continue once the Corps figured out a way to protect the wildlife corridor that stretches through the property. The New Tampa Neighborhood News will provide updates on the Cypress Creek Town Center outlet mall project as they become available.

Massive Growth Expected For Wesley Chapel Area In Coming Years By Matt Wiley Imagine the Shops at Wiregrass becoming the bustling urban, “downtown center” of Pasco County. This is not a figment of someone’s imagination. It’s the plan of the Pasco County Planning & Growth Management department (PGM). During a Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) Economic Development Committee meeting at American Consulting Engineers (ACE, located off of S.R. 56 near I75), Richard Gehring, director of the PGM, gave a presentation about the recent growth and plans for future growth in the Wesley Chapel area. Seated around the table in the ACE conference room, Gehring explained that there are currently 18 Developments of Regional Impact (DRIs) in Pasco, including both Wiregrass Ranch and the not-yet-developed Cypress Creek Town Center (see page 1), and that the County is currently working to bring both more residential and non-residential growth to the area. Gehring explains that the plan for these DRIs is to develop them as 50percent urbanized, with both commercial and residential areas, and then leave the remaining 50 percent of the land as conservation or preservation areas.

“Forces will want to urbanize the whole county,” Gehring said. “This way, we get the best of both worlds.” He compares the plans for Pasco to the original layout of Hillsborough County, with the southern portion the most urbanized, gradually becoming more rural in the northern areas. However, in recent years, there has been significant growth in northern Hillsborough, especially around New Tampa. Wiregrass Ranch is expected to become the downtown, urbanized portion of Pasco as the Wesley Chapel area continues to grow, said Gehring. “The S.R. 56 corridor is the most dynamic,” he explained. “New Tampa is built up and now it is pouring into Wesley Chapel.” Gehring says the current regional center of the entire Tampa Bay region is the Westshore district of Tampa, which has the highest concentration of businesses. However, he says that the University of South Florida (USF) area, including New Tampa, is expected to emerge as the new regional center of Tampa Bay over the next 20 years. The proof is in the numbers. While the County population only grew by 120,000, a 42-percent overall growth, between 2000 and 2010, the population in southern Pasco has exploded in past decade, second only to Lee County

in southwest Florida. In 2000, the population of southern Pasco was about 48,500; the 2010 census put the population at nearly 120,000, a growth of more than 145 percent. Based on this growth, estimated population figures for 2025 put the Richard Gehring (2nd from left) told Wesley Chapel Economic area at 300,000 Development Committee members that Wesley Chapel is becomresidents , ing southern Pasco County’s urban center. although Gehring pastures into an urban center.” called that number “aggressive.” Gehring also discussed the possiGrowth can already be seen in the Wiregrass Ranch area, as that DRI con- bilities for mass transit, one of which tinues to be developed, albeit still with- included bending Bruce B. St. James Church Begins Construction On New Sanctuary! By Matt Wiley Celebrating its milestone 25th year, St. James United Methodist Church, located on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in Tampa Palms, has begun construction on its new sanctuary to give the popular church room to grow as its church community continues to expand. The construction, which began on March 11, will expand the sanctuary to 5,000 square feet, making room for about 200 more seats. “We wanted to be able to have some flexibility with our capacity because we were finding that we were maxing out with our capacity during regular services,” says St. James' director of communications Andrea ReeceKitchen. “We wanted to be able to add some more seats to be able to welcome more in.” St. James hired Lakewood Ranchbased contracting company Mills Gilbane to complete $1.2-million project that will expand the sanctuary to seat more than 700 worshipers, as well as expand the narthex (the welcome area in the entry way of the sanctuary) and add two additional

classrooms for Sunday School. The idea of expanding the sanctuary is nothing new for St. James. The church’s executive manager Chris Stocker says that the idea first came to light in 2005. “At that time, expanding that much just didn’t make sense,” he explains. “So, instead, we just did some small additions.” Ever since the idea first arose, however, the church has been accumulating money from its congregation for the project, most of which was raised through a capital campaign. “So far, we’ve raised more than $900,000 in cash donations,” Stocker says. “Our finance committee is working on a plan to have the rest of the debt paid off by the end of the year.” Meanwhile, Reece-Kitchen says that before construction began on the new sanctuary, it became particularly difficult to seat everyone in attendance for holidays such as Christmas and Easter. For example, this past Easter, she says, the church even had to have overflow seating in another building with church members having to watch a live video stream of the service because all of the Easter Sunday serv-

Continued from page 1 submit requests for things that would benefit their classroom and the learning experience their students receive. “We raised enough money to meet all of the wishes that were submitted by our teachers this year,” says Wharton PTSA president Eileen Dellecese. “It goes to show what can be accomplished when everyone works together.” Dellecese is finishing up her third and final year as Wharton's PTSA president. She is excited for the next group of Board members who will run the PTSA next year. “We have had a great group of Board members,” she says. “It's been a great experience and I'm proud of everyone.” She says that Wharton's PTSA tries to do a lot with the students. “We try to reach out to wherever the 'need' is,” she says. For instance, the PTSA was able to provide seven $500 scholarships to students this past year, as well as provide yearbooks to Wharton seniors who could not afford to purchase one. Wharton also was recognized for the work of Amy French, who received “Instructional Support Person of the Year.” The school also received awards for “Communications Excellence” and

“High School PTSA Student Involvement.” But, Wharton wasn't the only school in the spotlight at the awards ceremony, as Benito Middle School principal John Sanders was named Hillsborough County's Middle School Principal of the Year. “I feel blessed to have the PTA, teachers and community that I do here at Benito,” Sanders says. “Without them, this award would mean nothing.” Benito also was recognized for the work of Brandie Villano, who was honored as Hillsborough County's “Middle School PTSA Person of the Year.” The school also received awards for “Communications Excellence” and “School Volunteering Excellence.” Hunter's Green Elementary (HGE) also was honored with several awards this year, including the prestigious “Hillsborough County Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the Year.” The school also received recognition for “Communications Excellence,” “School Volunteering Excellence” and for its newsletter.

She put together a short “stop animation” film using small “squishy” animals in diorama backgrounds, one of which featured an arctic scene with animals floating on icebergs. She also recorded a song for the opening and closing credits in which she both sang and played the guitar. “It took at least a day to film it,” she says. “It took about fifteen minutes to write (the script).” Meyers says that she had to click the shutter on a still-shot camera each time she moved the animals and then

put the photos in order on the computer to make them appear to be moving. The film is made up of 120 still shots. “It wasn't about winning,” says Meyers, humbly. “But it is something I'll always remember.” Appropriately, Meyers received her award at Tampa's renowned Lowry Park Zoo. “BBD Update”

Continued from page 1 and I-275, DMS's are electronic signs programmed with important information drivers should know about the driving conditions on the interstate and are part of the state's Sunguide Traffic Management System, which, according to its website, helps to provide motorists with reliable traveler information. Whether it is a message from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) alerting drivers of a large accident and urging them

16

to seek an alternate route, or a message from law enforcement warning drivers of an Amber alert, Passmore says that these signs are installed to keep drivers aware of what is happening on the interstate. The benefit of these signs, he says, is that drivers can see messages about driving conditions before they get onto the interstate. However, if the need arises, he says, messages about driving conditions on BBD could be delivered. “There will be some crossfunctionality between the city and FDOT, but the primary focus is on the interstate,” Passmore says.

Chamber To Help Oakley’s Grille Celebrate Its 1st Anniversary!

For those of us who live in New Tampa, the ongoing construction on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. is a consistent challenge that many of us have to deal with every day. BBD engineer Scott Passmore of KCI Technologies likens road construction to “open-heart surgery while the patient is on the move,” but for many businesses in the local area who have been negatively affected, it’s been more like a heart attack! The traffic jams seem to be neverending and residents often choose to shop elsewhere to save time. In the midst of all of this BBD chaos, family-owned Oakley’s Grille has managed to flourish and this month, owner Keith Oakley and his family and staff will celebrate the popular eatery’s first full year in business. Nearly four decades of experience in the restaurant industry has clearly served Keith well! Offering truly gourmet burgers, a variety of great sandwiches and salads in a clean, contemporary and familyfriendly environment, Oakley’s Grille is a hidden gem in New Tampa — located next to Dairy Queen, in front of Home Depot on BBD. With Burger Nights on Tuesdays, Phillys & Fries on Wednesdays and Fajita Fridays, you can find the perfect

‘Like A Good Neighbor,’ Jimmy Fisher State Farm Is (Still) There! By Sheryl Young Since 1988, Jimmy Fisher has been providing State Farm Auto Insurance to customers in New Tampa, Wesley Chapel and the community in which he was born and raised, Temple Terrace. His long-time office — situated on E. Fowler Ave. in a popular stretch of office and retail plazas a few miles east of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and less than a mile west of I-75 — is most recognizable by the white 1956 Ford Sedan delivery truck with the familiar red State Farm logo. The vintage truck sits out front almost all the time, signifying good old-fashioned neighborhood service. Since he isn’t limited by State Farm geographically, Fisher helps clients not only in his three primary communities, but also in other parts of Tampa, as well as Seffner, Plant City, Brandon, Riverview and all surrounding areas. Fisher’s two-story office building, with its black awnings, is home to a total of twelve experienced, licensed State Farm staff members, both fulltime and part-time. Together, Fisher and his staff have over 150 years of State Farm experience. “I feel this crew helps me make a

24

great difference in providing service to current and prospective clients,” he says. “We study the client’s particular risk for an understanding of what they need and then, we try to save them some money.” State Farm has been the largest auto insurance company in the country every year since 1942, which allows the company to offer the best-possible service at always-competitive prices to meet each customer’s needs. When you become a Jimmy Fisher State Farm customer, you will have access to a 24/7 phone answering line — and always hear a human voice. “Our customers practically have me ‘on retainer’ to talk to,” Fisher says. “I can visit people at their homes, and my office also is even open on Saturdays by appointment.” Fisher feels insurance issues are becoming so complex that people want someone who can help them answer their questions at any time, and address features in a policy that a customer may not even know exists or that may need clarification. Although Fisher and his associates specialize in automobile insurance, the office does offer life, homeowners and renters insurance under the State Farm

They also can provide opinions and reviews of other insurance products. “We can help our customers pick the right companies and programs for their other insurance needs.” The State Farm company brochure at Fisher’s office features many types of auto insurance discounts, and Fisher himself says he enjoys talking about these special rates. “We have a Good Driving Discount, Accident Free Discount, Multiple Automobile Discount, and a unique

Speaking of the State Farm brochures, they also are printed in Spanish, and Fisher has three Spanishspeaking staff members in his office.

Jimmy is a third-generation Tampa native. He graduated from King High, which is located just a couple of miles south of his Fowler Ave. location. He started his office with just one employee and it has grown to be one of the largest State Farm agency locations in the area. Because he is so well known to folks around not only Temple Terrace and the surrounding communities but also all around the Tampa Bay area, 50-80 percent of his customers are referrals from other clients.

Tebow? Who’s That?

But, if the name Jimmy Fisher sounds familiar to you for reasons other than insurance, it might be because of Fisher’s football career — he was a starting quarterback for the University of Florida Gators (197276), and he was a team captain in that last year. Fisher set a record for singleseason rushing touchdowns by a UF QB (8, he also threw 10 TD passes that year) that stayed on the books until a relative unknown named Tim Tebow barely broke it (with 23 rushing TDs) more than 30 years later — in 2007. Besides being a big year for him in football, 1976 was a banner time for Fisher in another way — that was the year he married his lovely wife,

Jimmy Fisher held the University of Florida’s single-season record for rushing TDs by a QB for more than 30 years. Janet. The couple has two grown, married daughters. “It’s an honor and a pleasure to help the communities in and around Tampa with their insurance needs,” Fisher says. “Our motto is ‘We live where you live,’ and it’s true for me. I’m not going anywhere.” Jimmy Fisher's State Farm Insurance office is located at 6920 E. Fowler Ave., Suite E. Get Your Tile Floor’s Grout ‘Sealed & Delivered’ By Sir Grout! by Sheryl Young Greg Lynch started his Sir Grout® franchise in Lutz two years ago. His company’s specialty is cleaning and sealing the grout in tile floors and backsplashes. Lynch was in the insurance business for 18 years, after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing from New Hampshire College in Manchester (now called Southern New Hampshire University). So how did he end up taking this step? “The company I had been working for transferred me here to Florida,” he says. “When the economy started failing, their business became unstable, so I started exploring for other things to do.” While looking into having the floors in his own home done, Lynch came upon the Sir Grout® franchise. Other grouting companies were beginning to offer multiple related services to stay afloat as the economy foundered, but he wanted someone who was remaining a grouting expert. Although Sir Grout (originally called Grout MD) outlets can do caulking, sandless wood refinishing

28

and stone cleaning and refinishing, Lynch has made a specialty out of sticking with kitchen and bath tile floor grout cleaning and sealing. “Grout cleaning and sealing is my bread and butter,” Lynch says. “I steam clean showers and reseal granite countertops, but I want to specialize in this one thing, and do it the best.” He works with two full-time employees and one part-time. They do jobs in Lutz, New Tampa, Wesley Chapel and neighboring communities all around the Tampa Bay area. Lynch believes that what makes Sir Grout® different is that the franchisees use a color sealant specifically made for the company, and they apply it by hand. Another advantage to Sir Grout’s sealant is that it prevents grout from staining as it gets older. This is the most common complaint about grout, especially in high-traffic areas that don’t get cleaned often enough and become permanently stained. “Builder-grade grout doesn’t have a long-lasting sealant,” Lynch explains. “Although there are some made of a Teflon substance, most grouts are silicone-based spray sealants. Since grout is porous, it seeps

Local Sir Grout® franchise owners Lisa and Greg Lynch and their children. inside and is absorbed by the grout, instead of settling on top and protecting the grout.” Lynch also gives an example of how he goes about cleaning and sealing the grout on tile floors: “We use a cleaner with a special brush that scrubs the surface dirt out and shoots hot steam between the tiles. We then scrub the floors, which both agitates the cleaner and extracts the dirt.” Lynch and his team will then apply the sealant, and they’ll even get

For Advertising Information Call 813-910-2575 • Volume 20, Issue 13 • June 16, 2012

down on the floor with a toothbrush to make sure it is thoroughly applied into the grout before being sealed. Then, they will buff the floor twice to remove any remnants of the sealant from the tile. Lynch says that the average job takes five to six hours, but it will make the tile and grout look pretty much brand new. “And once the sealant is down, it dries in only 12 to 15 minutes,” Lynch adds. “The customer can walk on their floor after only 15 minutes, while other products can take as long

as two hours to dry fully.” There’s a video on the Sir Grout® website that shows the five steps done to make this happen. Some sealant is clear only, but the Sir Grout® sealant comes in many colors. A customer can pick a color to match or coordinate with the color of their tile. The sealant dries on top of the grout, forming a protective shield over the grout without soaking in or leaving exposed areas. Lynch’s Sir Grout franchise is listed on AngiesList.com as a “guaranteed reliable company.” He feels, although some people may think his prices are comparatively a little high, that they will love the service and results they get — and will not need to repeat it as often. Ron Gibbs found Sir Grout on Angie’s List. “The tile in our entry way had two different shades of grout color,” he says. “Some of the tile is fairly new, but there was also some eight-year-old tile. I knew that just cleaning it wouldn’t solve that issue.” Gibbs says that his call was returned promptly and that Lynch came to his house and explained that he could clean the grout and then use the color seal method to make it all look brand new. “The real test was when my wife came home,” Gibbs says. “She was

very pleased and agreed that even the old tile looked like new again.” He says that the work done was thorough and looked exactly as it was described — and that the price was reasonable. “I will talk to customers about our prices and why our competition may come in with a lower bid,” Lynch says. “People may think they can get a better price from a company that will give them a cost for a twice-a-year job, but I stand by what Sir Grout® charges to get it right the first time. You get what you pay for.” Catch Greg this summer, and you can receive $50 off his services.

Eco-Friendly & Better For People With Allergies

Due to more families wanting to be ecologically friendly to the environment, and being aware of what can cause many allergies today, more people are pulling up carpet and are turning to tile floors. “To help in this, all of our products are acid-free and allergy-resistant,” Lynch explains. He adds that the cleaner Sir Grout® uses is “Ph-neutral.” Ph balance is the proper balance of “potential of hydrogen” in human bodies. In order to be healthy, a body must have the right measure of acid and alkaline ions in the blood. Lynch assures that Sir Grout’s cleaners are Ph neutral –

meaning they won’t throw our Ph balance off. Greg and his wife, Lisa, have been married for 16 years. New Wesley Chapel North Kumon Center Helps Students Succeed! By Matt Wiley Recent FCAT scores have educators and parents alike worried about how much Florida students are actually learning in the state’s public schools. Luckily, there are places like Daksha Jadeja’s Wesley Chapel North Kumon Learning Center franchise (on S.R. 54, next to Sweetbay), where students as young as preschoolers to graduating high school seniors can get extra help in both reading and mathematics. “Kumon is an international program,” says Jadeja. “We are the world’s oldest and largest after-school supplemental/enrichment-program. I’ve had a Kumon center in the Lutz/Land O’ Lakes area for about 10 years now.” In November 2011, Jadeja opened her second Kumon Center on Wesley Chapel Blvd. in the Towne Centre shopping plaza, just a few miles north of the Hillsborough County line — and from much of New Tampa. “One of the reasons we (opened the new center) was because our Lutz/Land O’ Lakes center already was drawing so many students from the Wesley Chapel/New Tampa area,” she explains. “It made sense to open a center there to accommodate some of the existing students we had and to keep them from having to come all the way

out to Land O’ Lakes.” One of the ways Jadeja commemorated the new center was by hosting her annual “Read-a-thon” there, an event that she had previously held for her students at the Land O’ Lakes location for the past 10 years. Jadeja says that the “Read-a-thon” is an event for her students to practice reading out loud to develop fluency, as well as showcase their reading talents in an intimate atmosphere surrounded by a small, supportive group of parents and fellow students. This year’s “Read-athon” was the first to be held at her new Wesley Chapel center, but it will likely not be the last. “Our goal was to help the kids overcome their fear of reading in public,” says Jadeja. “We had about 20 kids from pre-k through seventh grade participate (this year).” The students each chose a book at their reading level from Kumon’s recommended reading list and read in front of the group of parents and students for about three minutes each. Jadeja says that part of the way Kumon helps students improve their reading (and math) skills is through the use of an “individual curriculum” that is different for each student. “We have a curriculum,” Jadeja

Owner Daksha Jadeja of the Wesley Chapel North Kumon Learning Center on S.R. 54 helps 6-year-old Joaquin Parrilla with a reading exercise. says, “and essentially what that curriculum has done is pull the core principles that children need to learn in order to be successful in their academic pursuits, and that’s what we focus on. What’s individualized is how they pace themselves through the program and how they progress.” According to the Kumon website, the program is not just a place for

remedial math and reading help. Kumon does focus on early learning, remedial learning and enrichment, hoping to build confidence in each student’s learning abilities that the student will be able to take beyond the classroom. And, the Kumon classroom is where it all begins. “We always want each child to be working above and beyond their grade level and exceeding all expectations,” Jadeja says. Parents take their kids to Kumon because the program has consistently produced results. Jadeja’s goal is to have students who are enrolled in her Kumon Centers to be working at their grade level within twelve months of beginning at the center — no matter which level they were at when they started — and continue on to finish the program. She currently has more than 300 students enrolled in the math and/or reading programs at her two Kumon centers, of which 70 percent are working above their grade level.

A Tried & True Method

To achieve the success parents and students seek, Jadeja’s centers use the “Kumon Method” of learning which, according to the company’s website, is built in levels. To determine where each student stands when they begin the pro-

gram, they have to take a placement test. Then, based on the results of the test, students’ learning levels are established and they begin the program at a “comfortable starting point.” The Kumon site says that it’s O.K. for this level to be below the student’s current grade level, which allows each student to build confidence and stronger study skills. Students complete worksheets in whichever program they are enrolled that focus on the fundamentals of each subject, whether it is math or reading. As the students master concepts, they progress to the next level of exercises at their own pace or, as Kumon describes it, the “Just Right” level. As students progress through the different levels of the two programs, they are recognized for their accomplishments. This helps to keep the kids interested, she says. One way that they are recognized is through Kumon’s use of a “rewards system,” in which students earn points that they can save up and redeem for prizes. The more assignments and levels students complete, the more points they earn. Jadeja says that one of her students recently redeemed his points for a Microsoft X-Box 360 gaming system, which is in the top level of prizes. Different prize levels feature different types of prizes, which can vary from gaming systems to a guitar or telescope.

She says that she also holds an annual awards ceremony for the students at her two Kumon Centers, in which every child is recognized. This, she says, is a huge motivation for the kids. No matter how big or small, attention is shown to each student’s accomplishments. There is also an honor roll assessed after each quarter for all of the students working above their grade level “I like to honor all of the kids,” she says. “Each student has made some achievement.”

The Meaning Of ‘G By 5’

One of the milestone achievements students enrolled in the Kumon math program can earn is called the “G by 5” award, for which they earn a trophy in the shape of a golden star. Students who earn this recognition have completed level “F,” or pre-algebra, by the end of fifth grade, or before they enter middle school. One student in Jadeja’s program, 10-year-old Nikita Patel, has even exceeded the “G by 5” award, as she is about to finish the “F” level before entering the fifth grade. “The biggest reward of the system is helping students feel empowered,” she explains. “They find that they have become independent, self-learners and really enjoy not having difficulty at school. Self-esteem and self-confidence really go up with the program.”

Jadeja explains that most parents who enroll their child have heard about her two Kumon Centers through word of mouth for the results her programs have produced and the level of personal service she provides. “I am very accessible,” she explains. “I also know these kids. I know all of their names and know where they are in the program.” Before opening her first cenDaksha With Nikita Patel, who is about to ter, Jadeja was a Kumon parent. Tampa Bay Warriors Lay Siege, Take 2012 State YBOA Title By Justin Hoppe The NBA season may be drawing ever closer towards its epic finale but for all the players, coaches, parents and fans of the Age 10 & Under (10U) Tampa Bay Warriors Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) team, crunch time has only just begun. For the next three months the highly competitive team of ten youngsters from all over Tampa, which features New Tampa resident Varun “V” Ajjarapu, will be investing a great deal of their newly acquired glorious summer freedom on the court. The summer tournament season marks the culmination of a year's worth of never-ending suicide sprints, spending more time working on their respective jumpers than with their friends or family, and hitting just a couple free throws shy of losing both arms at the shoulder on an almost daily basis. But, for many, if not all, of those involved with the Warriors, the experience will ultimately come down to the thrill of victory and the regret of defeat. The latter is by no means on the agenda of the Warriors fourth grade (10U) tournament squad, which secured the YBOA Boys State Champi-

Despite the level of offensive superiority exhibited by the squad, the hallmark of the team lies with the defense. Coach Knox’s style proves he doesn’t subscribe to the simplicity of reactionary play that many others within this age group so often do. Instead, his tendency is to change defensive schemes suddenly in order to control the tempo from start to finish, forcing the opposition to react rather than allowing them to assert themselves. Our Exclusive Guide To Hurricane Preparedness In New Tampa By Matt Wiley With the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season having officially started on June 1, and with one named storm — Sub-Tropical Storm Beryl — already under our area’s belt, it’s important to be prepared for whatever this year's unpredictable storm season throws at us. Whether it’s an unusual (because we’re so far inland) direct hit, or just some wind and rain, here is the 2012 New Tampa Neighborhood News Hurricane Preparedness Guide to help your family weather the storm(s). This year, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting that there will be 9-15 named storms, of which between 4-8 are expected to become hurricanes and, of those, 1-3 could become major (above a Category 3) hurricanes before the season ends on November 30. If a strong storm approaches and your home is not prepared with boarded-up windows or hurricane shutters — local emergency management officials warn that duct tape on the windows will not prevent debris from flying through them — a shelter

40

is the best place to be. In New Tampa, there are five approved hurricane shelters: Lawton Chiles, Dr. Richard F. Pride and Hilda T. Turner elementary schools, Louis Benito Middle and Paul R. Wharton High. If you ever have to evacuate to a shelter, be sure to bring pillows, blankets and sleeping bags. It also is a good idea to pack a few days worth of changes of clothes and personal hygiene items, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant. For entertainment, be sure to bring books, playing cards or hand-held game systems/cell phones. Even board games that have been collecting dust in the closet can provide first-class entertainment, as well as a good distraction when sitting in a school gymnasium or auditorium during a hurricane. However, if you decide to brave the storm in your home, there is no sense in not being prepared. Before deciding to “ride it out” at home, however, check to see if you live in an evacuation area or an area that is subject to severe wind or flooding, as many homes in New Tampa are built near ponds and even conservation areas that could flood during a major

hurricane or tropical storm.

Make A Storm Kit

First and foremost, bottled drinking water is absolutely the most important thing to have when gathering hurricane supplies. Local supermarkets, such as the Tampa Palms Publix, as well as wholesale stores — like BJ’s Wholesale Club on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in Tampa Palms, and even home improvement stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot (both located on BBD, on either side of I75), are almost always wellA hurricane can be menacing from above, but perstocked with gallon jugs and haps even scarier on the ground. hand. Flashlights and batteries will come in handy if the power goes out, especially for a battery-powered storm radio that will keep you informed of any updates before, during and after the storm. Coolers also can be a treasured commodity, especially for bags of ice, another one of the most demanded items following a storm. Being prepared before a shortage can put you ahead of the game. It may sound...well, nasty...but it’s also a good idea to have a large bucket with a tight-sealing lid, along with some kitty litter, to serve as a makeshift toilet; it is not uncommon for plumbing to be out of service during a severe storm. Other items to have on hand during a major storm include plenty of cash (banks and ATMs will not be in service if the power is out), and, if you

can afford it, a gas generator (to be used outdoors only) can turn the lights on for as long as the gas supply lasts. It’s also good to have a few extra gas cans filled if a storm is approaching, not only for your generator, but also for your vehicle in case nearby gas stations run out of gas. We’ve already seen one named storm this season — Beryl actually hit a few days before the official start of the season on June 1 — and, hopefully, it will be the only one. However, it is always a good idea to be prepared and to have a plan. For more information about being prepared for a hurricane, please visit the National Hurricane Center's website at NHC.NOAA. gov, or, you also can call the City of Tampa (282-7827) and Hillsborough County Emergency Management (236-3800) departments.

“Graduation”

Continued from page 39 after row of Freedom seniors — 267 of which were honors students wearing white in recognition of their GPAs exceeding 4.0 — got up from their seats to walk across the stage and receive their respective diplomas. A similar scene followed on the evening of June 6, as Wharton’s 526 graduating seniors filled the floor of the auditorium. “Four years ago, I had the pleasure of welcoming this group of students to Wharton as freshmen,” said Wharton principal Bradley Woods, Hillsborough County’s High School Principal of the Year. “Regardless of how they entered, they are all leaving as one — the class of 2012.” Woods told the crowd of proud relatives of the more than $6 million in scholarships that the class had earned, as well as the more than 1,100 AP exams taken, the 297 seniors graduating with a 4.0 GPA or above and the more than 15,000 community service hours that the class had logged collectively. “We came into high school with clean slates,” said Wharton’s Valedictorian Cory Goldman, who graduated with an impressive 7.52 weighted GPA. “Throughout high school, our slates were etched with successes and failures. Our slates will once again be wiped clean after graduation. This is our last blank canvas.” Congratulations to all of the Wharton, Freedom and other local 2012 graduating seniors from the New Tampa Neighborhood News!

Summer Movies Explode Onto The Silver Screen! By Matt Wiley Cue the lights and grab some popcorn as a barrage of superheroes, aliens, rock stars, foul-mouthed teddy bears, animated zoo animals and cub scouts bring something for everyone to theaters this summer, especially action! One Wesley Chapel resident — Tommy Quinn — can be seen taking part in some of that action alongside the world’s greatest superheroes in one of this summer’s most action-packed movies that has already raked in more than $1 billion worldwide, “The Avengers.”

They’ve finally assembled. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and the Black Widow come together to battle Thor’s angry brother and, from the reviews so far, “The Avengers” is smart, funny and full of non-stop action sequences that don’t disappoint. Saffron Is Still The New Tampa Area’s Favorite Indian Cuisine! By Gary Nager No, I’m still not going to tell you that Indian food is high on my list of favorites, but I will say this — if you’re not sure if you like Indian cuisine, you really should try Saffron Indian Cuisine, located in the Cross Creek Center plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. at Kinnan St. Owners Nimesh and Sunita Chheda will celebrate five years in business at the end of this year and there’s a lot of very good reasons why the restaurant’s regulars keep coming back time and again. “We make everything fresh,” says Sunita. “And we use the finest ingredients and spices. People really appreciate our food.

This garlic Naan bread is our editor’s favorite starter at Saffron.

46

One young family that happened in while I was taking pictures for this story told me that although their kids started out only eating the chicken fingers and fries from Saffron’s kids menu, they soon graduated to the chicken butter Masala and chicken Tikka Masala. “They really love it here,” said the busy mom, who obviously was into Saffron’s spicier options. Well, although I love some spicy foods, I will admit that I haven’t been able to graduate to the “Indian spicy” items on Saffron’s menu. My favorite starter is still the garlic Naan bread, which is topped with garlic and cilantro and baked in the Tandoor oven. I also have enjoyed the meat samosa (triangular crispy pastries filled with meat and green peas) and definitely plan to try the chicken Kathi kabob rolls, which are sort of like a chunky grilled chicken taco with a soft wrap. But, whether you like a nice Mulligatawny stew, fried chicken, onion or even paneer (cottage cheese) pakoras or a Saffron special appetizer platter, you definitely can fill up fast on starters. And of course, every time I visit Saffron, I have to still get the Tandoori oven lamb chops, which come out sizzling, like fajitas, and sitting atop equal-

ly delicious onions and peppers. I get these tender chops mild-tomedium, but they are always delicious. I can’t eat shrimp, but I do hear people rave about the spicy Tandoori shrimp all the time, too. I also have enjoyed Saffron’s chicken butter Masala and chicken Madras (with coconut), the lamb Saagwala (which is lightly spiced and cooked in spinach) and the fresh fish tikka Masala. Last year, freelancer Camille Gillies, a much more experienced Indian cuisine enthusiast who wrote about the trio of chutneys, a trio of which are served with papads (cracker-like lentil wafers) while you wait. I didn’t really enjoy the papads by themselves, but the cilantro and mint chutney and sweet tamarind chutney served with the papads definitely bring out some unexpectedly delicious flavors. When you visit this month, be sure to ask about the new items being added to Saffron’s special summer menu. Saffron is named for an Indian spice and what really sets Indian cuisine

The Tandoori lamb chops (top) and Tandoori shrimp (above) are among the top sellers at Saffron Indian Cuisine on Cross Creek Blvd. apart even from Thai and other food that use a lot of curry flavors is the way the spices are used in every dish. Some pack serious heat, so make sure you ask if you don’t like spicy food, while others are just uniquely flavorful.

As someone who served as a de facto “big brother” to an entire group of younger kids in my neighborhood growing up; someone who has seen what happens to some kids who don’t have a meaningful relationship with an adult of the same gender in their lives, I have always felt strongly about organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters. As part of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay (BBBSTB) operates under the belief that every child has the ability to succeed and thrive in life. BBBSTB partnership facilitator Jan Roberts, the current Honorary Deputy Mayor of Wesley Chapel, hosted a fund raiser for the agency on June 7 at Pebble Creek Golf Club (PCGC). Among the three “Bigs” who spoke at the event was April Saland (photo, with little sister Kylie), who talked about the importance of the

organization, which mainly matches children in single-parent and low-income families or households where a parent is incarcerated. BBBSTB serves children in Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties and makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers and children. The agency provides a system of ongoing evaluation and support, to help “Littles” perform better in school, avoid violence and illegal activities and have stronger relationships with their parents and others. This event was an attempt to match more kids in our area with “Bigs.” BBBSTB currently has 550 children in Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco counties waiting to be matched with a “Big.” To help, visit BBBSFL.org or call Jan Roberts at 769-3614.- GN

The Latest & Greatest News About Dining, Shopping, Retail & More In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel! By Gary Nager So many ribbon cuttings, so little time? Considering how hard it is to make a living in almost any U.S. community these days, when you have two outstanding Chambers of Commerce (Wesley Chapel & New Tampa) right in our distribution areas, and multiple other fine Chambers (North Tampa, Temple Terrace, Land O’Lakes, Central Pasco, Pasco-Hernando Hispanic Chamber, etc.) based within a few more miles, it’s easy to not be able to afford so many Chamber memberships. But, here’s a little hint if you’re still trying to grow your business locally: ribbon cuttings and after hours “mixers” hosted by Chamber members are almost always free and open to the public — and most attract anywhere from 30 to more than 100 local business people and residents who may want to do business with you! Most even serve refreshments and some serve food so good and so abundant, you can even save the cost of going out to dinner after. Here’s just a smattering of the recent run (some of these are more than a month old because we simply didn’t have room to run them before) on local ribbon cuttings and events and, if you turn to page 22 of this issue, you’ll see the New Tampa Chamber’s monthly page, which lists the Chamber’s many recurring events, some (but

Dash Of Salt & Pepper - I call owner and Meadow Pointe resident Ghada Jadallah my dear friend, but when way more than 100 people packed their way into the WCCC ribbon cutting for her catering/personal chef service located in the Cory Lake Isles Professional Center on Cross Creek Blvd., I realized that Ghada and her husband Lutfi (who I’ve known even longer than I have her) have more friends than I have critics. A Dash of Salt & Pepper has ready-made meals, can design personalized menus, uses the healthiest ingredients and serves up great food at great prices and Ghada’s always-winning

Spherion Staffing & Gator Cleaning Solutions - This really nice ribbon cutting event, with delicious food provided by Betty Marie’s Meals & More (352-340-9597), was held Apr. 17 at the Hampton Inn & Suites off S.R. 56. I also have sampled and enjoyed Ron’s fried ravioli appetizer, which is served with a chunky marinara sauce, and look forward to trying his veal and chicken parmigiana heroes and another popular Windy City favorite, the Chicago Italian beef sandwiches. There’s even share-able salads, plus wine, beer and flat-screen TVs, to add to your enjoyment. Circle Pizza at 994-3700 or stop in at 19651 BBD Blvd. And finally, the Pizza Kitchen has opened in the Cross Creek Center plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. (behind the Shell gas station), in the space previously occupied by the Urban Culinary Café. The pizza at the Pizza Kitchen also features a thinner crust than my favorite New York-style pizza, but it’s pretty good, too. The restaurant also features dine-in, takeout, subs and salads. For more info, stop in at the Pizza Kitchen at 10016 Cross Creek Blvd. or call 528-8777. Partying At Pepin - I also recently attended two great events at the beautiful T. Pepin Hospitality Centre on N. 50th St., less than a mile south of Hillsborough Ave. The first was the second annual “Brews With Attitude” craft beer tasting, featuring dozens of microbrews available from Pepin. Plan to attend this one next year! Yum! Then, just a week before our press time, I attended the second annual “Sneaker Soirée,” an awards banquet, also at Pepin, honoring our local pro and college sports programs. Among this year’s award winners was the “Moment of the Year,” Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria’s “Game 162”-winning homer that completed the Rays’ miracle march to the 2011 American League playoffs. The highlight of the evening was a discussion featuring the general managers of the Rays, Bucs and Lightning (photo, below). For more photos, visit NTNeighborhoodNews.com.
