Cool Summer: A/C Work To Begin At Local Schools! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com When the half-penny school sales tax referendum passed in Hillsborough County last year, the promise was that aged roofs and floors and playgrounds would be repaired, athletic tracks would be repaved and classrooms and fire evacuation systems being upgraded, just to name just a few much-needed enhancements. But, what got Wharton High's Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) president Kristie Scism most excited was much cooler than all those things. “The air conditioning,” Scism says. “It may not be the best thing, but it was the one thing I was most excited about.” Hillsborough County Public Schools announced last week that teams of workers have begun moving into the 21

schools that will receive an overhaul or replacement of their existing AC systems. While every school in New Tampa except for Hunter's Green and Tampa Palms elementaries is scheduled to get upgraded AC in years 1-5 of the school tax referendum, only Wharton High, Benito Middle School and Clark Elementary are among the 21 schools having the work done this summer. Over the next 10 years, funds from the half-penny sales tax are expected to overhaul or replace the A/C systems at 203 schools, or about 20 each summer. “It's pretty miserable when the A/C breaks,” Scism said, adding that it has been an all-too common occurrence at Wharton. “It gets to be like a sauna in some rooms. It's very hard (for students) to concentrate in those conditions.” Intermittent air conditioning at times has also been a complaint of parents and teachers at Benito and Clark for years.

Neighborhood News Online Celebrates Six Months Of Google-Funded Videos! An editorial by Gary Nager When we received the first installment of our funding from the Google News Initiative on January 14, we made a number of promises to our benefactors regarding the number of videos we’d put online, the number of people we’d hire to shoot, edit and be on-air talent for those videos and the equipment we would need to fulfill our commitments. As this issue is reaching you, it has now been six months since we received that funding and I’d have to say that we are right on track. To me, the most important milestone for us to reach was the increase in the number of videos we would be releasing. Before our Google funding, we averaged one video every other week. But, we have now put out 41 videos in 21 weeks (with several videos in the can getting ready for release at out press time) since Jan. 14, or an average of at least two each week. And, more and more of you are watching those videos. In the nearly three years since we first started Wesley Chapel & New Tampa Television (WCNT-tv) — which we now call NeighborhoNewsOnline.net (search “Neighborhood News” on Facebook or “WCNT-tv” on YouTube) — we have flown past one million total views and nearly two million people reached on Facebook. The 41 videos we have put online since January alone have been viewed more than 210,000 times and have reached more than 354,000 people. Perhaps even more important is that those 41 videos have received a total of more than 36,000 “engagements” (Likes, Shares & Comments), or an average of more than 900 per video! How many local videos/posts do you know of that have had 1,000 engagements? We continue to reach our biggest audience whenever we put out videos about food, as our

Our biggest reach this year has been achieved by our video about the new Smallcakes Cupcakery in Tampa Palms, which also had more than 12,000 views, and a reach of more than 22,000 people! Even more recently, my “Neighborhood Dining News” segment about Hummingbird Jerk House (see ad on pg. 38) and Full Circle Pizza (see my “Neighborhood Nibbles & Business Bytes” column, also on pg. 38) released on May 29 already has been viewed more than 7,000 times and reached more than 11,000 people.

Although I also have several more lined up to start as this issue is reaching your mailbox, we currently have four print advertisers who have begun sponsoring our videos and online content, as part of their Video & Online “Subscription” program, where each of them will receive a Video Business Feature. Those advertisers are Total Air Solutions (see ad on pg. 23), Creative Permanent Makeup by Pam Edmonson (pg. 33), Omari’s Grill at Lexington Oaks Golf Club and KAP Medical Group (pg. 13). We have not yet released the Video Business Features for Total Air, Omari’s or Pam, but only the video for Omari’s had not yet been produced at our press time. However, Total Air, which was our first “subscriber,” has already been shown as a sponsor of eight videos in seven weeks, and those videos have been viewed more than 50,000 times, with a Facebook reach of nearly 89,000 people and nearly 7,000 engagements. Creative Permanent Makeup by Pam has sponsored seven videos in six weeks, and those videos have been viewed more than 40,000 times, with a FB reach of more than 68,000 and more than 6,000 engagements. Omari’s had only sponsored two videos at our press time, but they had been viewed more than 7,000 times, with a FB reach of nearly 15,000, with nearly 700 engagements. And, thanks to Omari’s co-owner Susana Herrera, who spent 20 years as a reporter and anchor in her native Colombia, including eight years on the Colombian CBN Network, our KAP Medical video was shot in English (with yours truly asking the questions) and in Spanish (with Susana interviewing fellow Latina Dr. Karina Parilo en Español). Roads: Interstate improvements could ease traffic in & out of New Tampa. FROM PAGE 1

St. Petersburg, the drive back to New Tampa takes more than an hour at rush hour, and a lot of that time is often spent in traffic on that bridge. Another project that would speed the commute along I-275 is one being proposed to fix the Westshore interchange, which Gwynn says is FDOT’s No. 1 unfunded priority. A public workshop was recently held, with a public hearing scheduled for January of 2020. By far the “most contentious” potential project, Gwynn says, is the long-simmering I-275 conundrum. The leading proposal to fix the congestion problem is to transform 275 from three lanes in each direction between Bearss Ave. (and the interchange at I-4) to four lanes, and would also include enhancements at malfunction junction. That proposal has drawn strong opposition from many Seminole Heights and Ybor City residents, who favor a no-build alternative and an emphasis on mass transit solutions. However, the Tampa Bay Partnership, a privately-funded businessdriven advocacy group dedicated to solving Tampa Bay’s most pressing

Lots of Stuff Is Brewing On The Local Business Scene Co., in an effort to revive one of the area’s most historic breweries. Both Brew Bus and Florida Avenue brands are distributed throughout the entire state of Florida. “We are happy to welcome Brew Bus Brewing, Inc., to Pasco,” said District 2 Pasco County commissioner Mike Moore. “Not only are they creating jobs, but their new tasting room and restaurant will be a great destination for residents and tourists alike. Breweries are a huge part of the tourism market.” For more information about Brew Bus Brewing, visit BrewBusUSA.com.

Brew Bus Brewing, Inc., the company behind Florida Avenue Brewing Co. and Brew Bus Brewing, has officially announced that it has purchased the former Sports + Field location on S.R. 56. The new owners will convert Sports + Field into a brewery with a beer garden, fullservice restaurant and event space. The 34,000-sq.-ft., two-floor facility in Wesley Chapel originally opened in 2005 as a $10.5-million multi-purpose fitness center that trained professional athletes while also offering fitness programs for local residents. It closed in 2015. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brew Bus Brewing Inc., Anthony Derby, told the Neighborhood News last month that his company was taking a close look at the property, located at 2029 Arrowgrass Dr., and saw a craft brewery as a missing part of the local Wesley Chapel/ New Tampa bar/dining scene. “We are excited to expand our operations into Pasco County to provide the community with a family-friendly brewery, event and restaurant destination,” Derby said in a statement. “By this time next year, Pasco residents will not only be working in our expanded operation, but also enjoying

Chefs of Napoli, an Italian restaurant that had been expected to open in the next few months at the old Beef O’Brady’s location in the Cross Creek Commons plaza off Morris Bridge Rd., is now unlikely to do so, after its owner was arrested last month and faces charges of conspiracy to commit human trafficking and lewd and lascivious battery. While the primary trafficker was not named to avoid identifying the teenage victim, Luigi Barile, who founded the Chefs of Napoli restaurants in Spring Hill and Ocala, was one of nine men arrested on May 17 by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office after a two-year investigation.

Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis said at a press conference that the victim had been sexually abused by the men for six months. He said Barile brought three of his friends to sexually assault the teenager. “Not only did he use the services of our young victim, he also brought, at least one time, at least three of his friends with him,” Nienhuis said. “And, all four of these men exchanged money for sex.” According to the Villages-News. com, Barile was released on a $25,000 bond — $10,000 each on two counts of kidnapping/human trafficking and $5,000 on a count of unlawful use of a two-way communication device. The Villages-News.com also reported that a number of special conditions had been placed on Barile, such as surrendering his passport, being placed on a GPS monitor and that he have no intentional contact with any child under 18. He also is not permitted to leave Hernando County. Barile has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

Students from the University of South Florida’s School of Public Affairs will meet for the first time on Tuesday, July 16, as they begin a study to determine the reasons for the outmigration of a number of local businesses from the New Tampa area and to find a potential solution, if there is one. The meeting will be held at either the New Tampa Regional Library or Compton Park in Tampa Palms. The group is comprised of graduate students working towards their Master’s degrees in Urban and Regional Planning at USF. They will conduct a listening tour with local focus groups and businesses, as well as a field study. USF School of Public Affairs director Ron Sanders told the Neighborhood News in April that if the study produces something concrete, it could lead to the city conducting something “more extensive and sophisticated.” District 7 Tampa City Council member Luis Viera also will attend the first meeting. “I think this has a lot of promise,” Viera says. “If there is a problem, hopefully we can figure that out. But, it’s definitely something we should look at now, sooner than later.”

Viera Hoping To Fill Seats At Upcoming Warrior Games By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com

When District 7 Tampa City Council member Luis Viera, who represents New Tampa, read about the exploits of Tampa’s Mike Nicholson in the Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games, he remembers being moved. Despite losing three limbs in Afghanistan n 2017, Nicholson picked up the pieces of his life and won an incredible six gold medals at the competition. Nicholson, a retired Marine Corps Sgt., then set off on another goal — to bring the games to his hometown. Viera was ready to jump at the chance to help. He volunteered to head up a large committee of individuals to promote the Warrior Games, which will be held June 21-30 at various locations in Tampa. “For what so many of them have sacrificed, we should welcome them with open arms,” Viera says. “I’ll be darned if there’s empty seats at these events. We owe it to these people to cheer them on.” The Warrior Games were created in 2010 as a way to help with the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded veterans and expose them to adaptive sports. More than 300 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans are expected to compete at this year’s games.

All four branches of the U.S. Military will be represented, as well as athletes from the United Kingdom Armed Forces, Australian Defence Force, Canadian Armed Forces, Armed Forces of the Netherlands and the Danish Armed Forces. There will be head-to-head competition in 14 sports, including — for the first time — golf, wheelchair tennis and even wheelchair rugby. The University of South Florida will host a number of events during the games: • Track events will be held at the USF Tampa campus on Saturday, June 22, 7 a.m.-3 p.m., with field events the following day, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. • The wheelchair tennis competition will be held at USF’s courts on Sunday, June 23, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. • The sitting volleyball finals will be held Sunday, June 30, noon- 4 p.m., at the Yuengling Center on N. 30th St. • Amalie Arena, the Tampa Convention Center, Macdill Air Force Base and the Eagles Golf Course in Odessa also will host competitions in other sports. A complete schedule is available at DoDWarriorGames.com/schedule. Viera started a New Tampa Veterans Association as one of his first actions after being elected to his City Council seat in 2017. A longtime supporter of the military and veterans, it is Viera’s hope that those

competing in the Warrior Games do so in front of large and receptive crowds. “I think this is a very patriotic community,” Viera says. “And we have a lot of veterans in New Tampa that I think would like to see these heroes compete.” The opening ceremony will be held Saturday, June 22, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., at Amalie Arena, and will be hosted by former “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart (pictured, right, at last year’s games), with music by Grammy-nominated country singer Hunter Hayes. Warrior Games closing ceremonies, visit AmalieArena.com. To learn more about the Warrior Games, visit DoDWarriorGames.com.

AdventHealth & Moffitt Cancer Partner Up In WC! By JOHN C. COTEY

john@ntneighborhoodnews.

Plans to expand the services at AdventHealth Wesley Chapel (AHWC) have been in the works for more than a year, but for hospital president and CEO Denyse Bales-Chubb, the most important thing was finding the right partner. She is convinced the hospital has done just that. On May 21, AHWC and the Moffitt Cancer Center officially broke ground on a new outpatient center to serve cancer patients as part of a new medical office building on the AHWC campus. The new medical office will be the bookend on the south side of the hospital along Bruce B. Downs Blvd., with the similarly-sized, existing Wellness Plaza on the north side. “We believe that the community here in Wesley Chapel is in need of having some cancer specialists they would be able to access, so it was natural we would go and talk to Moffitt,” Bales-Chubb said at the packed groundbreaking event. “They have the expertise, the awards and the skills we are looking for in our community.” According to Bales-Chubb, the second medical office on the hospital’s campus also is necessary because the first

one is full and cannot add anymore physicians. One of the pressing needs AHWC was looking to fill was cancer treatment. “It’s a natural fit,” she said. The groundbreaking for the threestory, 100,000-sq.-ft. medical building was attended by more than 100 community members, local leaders, media members and officials from AHWC

and Moffitt. It was heralded as a breakthrough moment for medical service in Pasco County. Nearly a third of that space will be used for the cancer outpatient center. AHWC’s own spine institute, which has outgrown its current space in the Wellness Plaza, also will be moving its services to the new building.

The rest of the space will be used for other services and Bales-Chubb (who will leave AHWC to assume the same position at AdventHealth Tampa July 1) hinted that more partnerships could be on the way. “The best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered and, in order that the sick may have the benefit of advancing knowledge, a union of forc-

Mayo, M.D. (founder of the original Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN) said in 1910. “It is a sentiment we share today.” The outpatient center will offer medical and radiation oncology services and will be designed to accommodate oncologists to deliver chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy to patients, said Dr. Lewis Harrison, chair & senior member of radiation oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Dr. Harrison also said the center at AHWC will have 20 examination rooms, 22 infusion suites and will accommodate two linear accelerators —

which customizes the radiation treatment to focus on the tumor or cancer cells without damaging surrounding tissue — for radiation therapy services. Full-length glass will provide patients the opportunity to look outside and see trees and nature, contributing to the overall patient experience. The new $44-million facility also will offer cancer screenings and survivorship programs for post-treatment patients. The building is expected to be completed by the fall of 2020.

A Little History...

The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Institute was founded as the state’s cancer center when it opened

on the campus of the University of South Florida in Tampa in 1986. As one of only 50 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Moffitt has gained national acclaim over the years for its research and patient care. “The mission has remained the same — to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer,” said Sarafin. “It drives everything and everyone at Moffitt. As the state grows and ages, the ACA estimates more than 130,000 (Floridians)…. will learn they have cancer this year. We are joining with AdventHealth, in the hopes that this project will make a difference in their lives.” Bales-Chubb also noted that it is a big step for Moffitt to be able to

bring its renowned cancer treatments and access to clinical trials closer to patients in our area who need it. “To me, it says they want to make sure they are taking care of the community,” she said. “Instead of just saying you come to us, it’s more of we are going to come to you…we want to bring our services to you, where you live and where you work.” AHWC, formerly Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, opened in 2012 as Wesley Chapel’s first hospital, and in 2016, doubled its emergency department from 18 to 35 rooms and went from 83 private patient rooms to 143 while adding three floors and 111,993 sq. ft. of new space during a $78-million expansion.

Born In 1919, Local Resident Celebrates 100 Years Of Life With Family after church. She taught kindergarten for years, and helped run the family dry cleaning business after that. She married Clifford George in 1945, and they were together for more than 50 years, until he passed away in 1997. She came to the United States in 2007 to live with the eldest of her three daughters, Shelia, and now lives with daughters Delrose and Florette in Northwood.

By JOHN C. COTEY

john@ntneightborhoodnews.com It’s almost naptime for Northwood resident Marion Brown. It is a week before her 100th birthday, it’s late in the afternoon, she has eaten lunch, the couch is comfortable and, little by little, she appears to be blissfully sinking in. Florette Brown, sitting next to her mother, just smiles. “She knows when it is time for bed,” Florette says. “She will remind you. Born June 4, 1919, in Spanish Town, the capital of the parish of St. Catherine in the historic county of Middlesex, Jamaica, Brown achieved a rare milestone when she turned 100 earlier this month. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, there were 72,197 Americans ages 100 and older in 2014 and a good clean life has helped make Marion one of them. She celebrated her 100th with flowers and a cake, but the real party took place on June 9, when more than 100 friends and relatives were expected to attend a large party in her honor at Compton Park in Tampa Palms. Some were scheduled to fly in from Jamaica, Canada and the United Kingdom, for a night of singing, dancing and

sharing stories about Marion’s glorious century of living. Florette leaned over to Marion and told her she would be dancing at the party as well. Marion let out a small smile and nodded. While she needs a wheelchair to get around these days, there is no shortage of family members — many of whom live in and around Wesley Chapel and New

Tampa — eager to give the matriarch of the family a spin around the dance floor. “She loves having her family around,” Florette says. “And they love coming over to see her. When they come over, they love going to her room and dancing for her. She enjoys all of them.” Marion grew up in Jamaica, hanging out in groups and going to parties, playing cricket and going for Sunday walks

Marion says that the secret to getting to age 100 is simple: clean and peaceful living. No smoking, no alcohol, lots of church and family and a well-balanced diet of good food like curried goat, jerk chicken, fish and rice and peas. And, maybe, the occasional French fry. She spends her days watching the news, and will often sit and look out the window. There is the occasional trip to the store or to see a doctor. Helping care for an elderly parent can be difficult work — Marion has a caregiver who assists — but it can also be an immeasurable joy, says Delrose. “It’s very interesting, because growing up sometimes, you don’t really have the time to be clued in,” she says. “But now, sitting with her, it’s different. tells us stories about our grandparents and great grandparents, and shares with us our history.” Sometimes, she regales her daughters with stories from World War II, when she says the lights had to stay off at night so the buildings couldn’t be seen in the distance. Young men in Jamaica — and the other British colonies — did what they could to avoid being recruited to fight for Britain, and sometimes would be lured out of hiding by music and then sent off to fight. When Marion wants to talk, she talks. ‘Sometimes I want to watch the news, and I’m sitting there with her, and she goes on and on,” Florette says, chuckling. “She’ll ask if I remember something and I say no, and she’ll say you don’t remember anything, but that’s because I’m trying to listen to the news.” Marion remains lucid, her daughters say. She points out people on TV she recognizes, remembers everyone’s birthday, and if someone stops by without their significant other, she will ask about that person.

When Florette mentioned to her she was 100 before her birthday, Marion corrected her: “No…next week.” Two years ago, she was honored back home as being the oldest living member of her church. At the age of 98, she made the flight with ease. “She said by hook or crook, I am going to Jamaica,” Delrose says, laughing. Great granddaughter Mariah, a recent Wiregrass Ranch High graduate, is the youngest in the family. Marion also has three granddaughters — Shelly-Ann Tillman, Andrene Cole and Denie Watts. Mariah says her friends think it is cool she has a 100-year-old great grandmother. Even Marion finds it hard to believe sometimes. “Sometimes she’ll reminisce and ask, ‘Am I really 100?,’” Florette says. “I tell her, ‘Yes Mom, it’s really true.’”

The Joint Chiropractic Center Offers Affordable Relief For Your Pain! By JOHN C. COTEY

Given the potential for abuse of and addiction to opioids, Alex Pierroutsakos was determined after losing his arm in a serious car accident at the age of 23 not to become reliant upon them. So, to manage his pain, he searched for alternatives, such as exercise, diet, massage therapy and chiropractic care. “Those are the four things that have helped me get myself to be able to live my healthy, active life,” Alex says. While the first three of the four things were readily accessible, Alex found that finding good, affordable and available chiropractic care wasn’t. It inspired him to open The Joint Chiropractic Center in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center shopping plaza at New Tampa/ Cross Creek Blvd.). The Joint’s New Tampa location is owned by Dr. Edward Leonard’s TJ Wesley Chapel PA, and managed by Alex and his wife Valerie. While Alex is a businessman — he and Valerie recently opened a second The Joint location in Brandon — he also is devoted to helping patients find the solutions to the very problems he has encountered due to his accident. The Joint was originally founded in

1999 by a Doctor of Chiropractic with a vision to transform the traditional, often misunderstood concept of routine chiropractic care by making it more convenient, friendly and affordable. In March 2010, The Joint was re-founded with the acquisition of the original eight franchised clinics. Today, The Joint has more than 425 offices, more than 900 chiropractic physicians and has handled more than

12 million patient visits across the U.S.

Two Years In New Tampa!

The Joint, which as of May 21 has been open on BBD for two years, will hold its two-year anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 22, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with free food and beverages being provided by outside vendors, big raffle prizes, giveaways and a full day of free adjustments. Every location has

licensed chiropractors to help you with spinal and joint function offering weekly adjustments (see below) to improve your body’s balance and relieve pain. The Joint’s new patient special offers a $29 initial visit, which includes a consultation, exam and adjustment. Then, for $69 a month, you get four adjustments — less than $20 per visit — and each additional adjustment (if you need more than four in a month) costs just $10. For those 17 and under, the cost is only $39 per month. For a single visit, the cost is only $39, but The Joint, which boasts nearly 400 members in New Tampa, also offers a number of packages for multiple visits, and recommends maintenance visits even after your pain goes away. Pebble Creek’s Diane Seay joined in January when she was having issues with the sciatic nerve on her left side. Dr. Barney Bickerton, D.C., was able to relieve her pain, but he also discovered something else. “He discovered that I have scoliosis in my shoulders,” Diane says. “That was a surprise. I always thought my one shoulder was lower than the other, but I thought that was from carrying purses and shoulder bags all these years.” Diane is now having her shoulder

treated by Dr. Bickerton, and says she can already notice the difference when she looks in the mirror. She also says she had back pain from sleeping on her side, but “Dr. B,” as many patients call him, diagnosed an issue with her lower spine, or sacrum, and is making improvements there as well. “There’s no question I feel better,” Diane says, and so does her husband, Jerry, who started going because he saw the changes in his wife. While Jerry says he didn’t have any back or neck issues, he started going once week (Diane goes twice a week) and says, “I feel more relaxed when I work around the house, in my yard, washing the cars and cleaning the pool. It just feels easier to do, and I feel more flexible.” The Seays had high praise for not only Dr. Bickerton, but the entire staff at The Joint.

Qualified, Experienced Chiropractic Physicians

Dr. Bickerton, who received his Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and Doctor of Chiropractic degrees from Logan University, near St. Louis, MO, has 16 years of experience. Dr. B handles the weekday patients at The Joint. On Saturdays, Dr. Jennifer Wright, D.C., and Dr. David Mangano, D.C., share duties. Like Dr. Bickerton, Dr. Wright also

earned her D.C. degree from Logan College of Chiropractic (in 2007), after attending Ohio State University for her undergraduate studies. Dr. Mangano is a Board-certified Chiropractic Physician in the state of Florida and in New York, with more than 35 years of experience. He also is an affiliate doctor with the Cancer Centers of America, and a wellness consultant and member of the nonprofit organization The Foundation for Wellness Professionals. Most people seeking chiropractic care are suffering from back pain. According to WebMD.com, 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually, and 35 percent of them (or 7.7 million) are seeking relief of pain in their backs. While many medical doctors prescribe opioids for back pain, chiropractors rely on hands-on manipulations of the spine and other joints that can relieve pain and restore mobility. Dr. Bickerton says that if the 24 independent vertebrae aren’t functioning together properly, you can experience pain and discomfort. “I would say the majority of our patients come in with some level of back and neck pain,” Alex says. “After that, people come because of headaches, or problems with an extremity, like a knee, ankle or shoulder.”

While most people associate chiropractic care with back pain, some studies, Alex says, have shown that routine care also can help with other maladies like relief from arthritis, bursitis, stress and tension disorders and even colds, allergies and sinus problems. In fact, Alex says his lifestyle, which includes running and sports like basketball, has been helped immensely by keeping various body parts in alignment. “We actually help a lot of young people, like cheerleaders and football players,” he says. “There’s a tremendous amount of study around ankle and leg adjustments to prevent injury for football players and other athletes. When my chi-

ropractor does my ankles, holy cow…because I exercise and run a lot, the amount of build-up onto that ankle is unbelievable. It’s a significant adjustment.” The Joint is open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays, a convenience for those who work and would otherwise have no options. It also is open on Saturdays, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. In the fall, Alex says there are plans to open The Joint on Sundays as well. Best of all, you don’t even need an appointment, and although The Joint doesn’t accept insurance, you can still use Healthcare Flexible Spending accounts or Health Savings Accounts. Alex says the focus of The Joint is to make people feel better, not their insurance companies and lawyers. “And we have a lot of motivated doctors that also want to be a part of that.” For more information about The Joint Chiropractic Center (19014 BBD Blvd.), visit TheJoint.com, call (813) 534-6415 or see the ad on pg. 3. The two-year anniversary party on June 22 is open to everyone, whether they already are patients at The Joint or not. And, when you call, ask about a special offer for members of the North Tampa Bay Chamber in July and please tell them that the Neighborhood News and the New Tampa location’s first patient (our editor, Gary Nager) sent you.

Pet Urgent Care Of Wesley Chapel Is Now Open On S.R. 56! By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN

Earlier this month, St. Petersburg resident Diane Grey was driving home from north Florida with her dog, a 108-pound Rhodesian ridgeback named Morocco. She was getting close to Pasco County when she says Morocco began showing signs of illness. She got off the interstate and pulled into a gas station. “I saw he was in distress, so I called my vet in St. Pete,” she says. Morocco was anxious because of all the travel and was suffering from heat exhaustion. Diane was told not to wait until she got home, but to seek help for Morocco immediately. She searched the internet and found Pet Urgent Care of Wesley Chapel, which had only recently opened one exit away. “I was so worked up and emotional,” she says. “When I saw the Pet Urgent Care sign, it was the best thing I ever saw. They were really friendly and took care of Morocco immediately.” It is the kind of important emergency services for your pet management had in mind when Pet Urgent Care of Wesley Chapel opened on April 15, making it the first urgent care clinic for pets in the Wesley Chapel/New Tampa area. Pet Urgent Care shares a building with Dr. Sree Reddy’s Seven Oaks Pet

Hospital, which first opened in 2007, and moved to its current location on S.R. 56, just east of I-75, in the plaza called the Pet & Fit Center, in 2016. The Pet & Fit Center is now a place where pet owners can visit their veterinarian, stop by the adjacent retail store for pet products, such as food, toys, treats, beds and much more. The retail store is Pet Depot, and it occupies 3,000 square feet next door to the pet hospitals. Seven Oaks Pet Hospital treat dogs, cats and exotic pets. When the pet hospital closes, the urgent care center opens. Pet Urgent Care of Wesley Chapel is open seven days a week until 11 p.m. (see full hours at the end of this story).

Making Pet Urgent Care Closer & More Convenient

Gina Ushi, DVM, is the medical director for Pet Urgent Care of Wesley Chapel. Prior to joining the pet hospital, Dr. Ushi worked at an emergency clinic in Tampa. Dr. Ushi earned her DVM degree in 2009 from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She had previously earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biology from Xavier University in New Orleans, LA, in 2003. “If people have an emergency with a pet in this area, we want them

to know they don’t have to drive down to (North) Tampa,” she says. “When I worked in Tampa, we would often get calls from Wesley Chapel where people would ask, ‘is there anything closer?’” Now, she says, there finally is a closer option for pets with all kinds of urgent medical needs, such as bite wounds or lacerations, not eating or drinking, or toxin ingestion. “We see pets with allergic reactions, ear and eye infections, vomiting and/or diarrhea,” Dr. Ushi explains, “or minor traumas, such as they jumped off the bed and now they’re limping.” There are no sched- Medical director Dr. Gina Ushi is one of three experienced pet emergency veterinarians you’ll find at Pet Urgent Care of Wesley Chapel. uled appointments, so all patients are seen on Pet Urgent Care of Wesley Chapel a walk-in basis. received her DVM degree from UF in 2009, and Dr. Michele Lentovich, who received her DVM degree from UF in 2005. Each of the three doctors has more than 10 years of experience in emergency medicine for animals. Dr. Ushi says their experience is critical when it comes to being able to save the life of a pet, because a doctor experienced in caring for animals is not the same as one experienced in handling emergencies. “When you visit our urgent care, you will see a doctor who has been in emergency medicine for at least 10 years,” Dr. Ushi explains. “You can rest assured you’re seeing a highly trained, highly experienced doctor.”

Exotic Pets, Too?

Pet Urgent Care of Wesley Chapel sees dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets. The doctors will sometimes see other exotic animals and birds, but that’s at the doctor’s discretion. Not every doctor is comfortable with every animal, so it will depend upon which doctor is available. Dr. Ushi advises that anyone who has birds or small exotic animals should call before walking in to determine whether or not they can be seen at the urgent care facility. Most exotics can be scheduled at the regular hospital by appointment. “We are a bridge between your family veterinarian and an overnight emergency facility,” explains Dr. Ushi. Sometimes, she says, a pet’s illness is so critical that they must be sent somewhere else for overnight care but, in most cases, they are able to be treated and sent home. In fact, Dr. Ushi says, many of the cases they see are minor issues where a pet owner simply can’t get to their own vet during regular office hours. Whether a pet is regularly seen at Seven Oaks Pet Hospital, or any other veterinarian, they are still welcome to come to Pet Urgent Care, if needed. Diane and Morocco will forever be grateful. She says the doctors at Pet UrNeighborhood News

gent Care of Wesley Chapel were able to stabilize Morocco so he could travel the rest of the way home. “When you’re so stressed like that, it was a wonderful feeling that everyone had great customer service,” Diane says, “from the receptionist to the vet who treated him. The facility was clean and easy to navigate. They saved my dog’s life.” She says that Morocco is doing much better now. She also took her paperwork from the visit to her vet back home and asked if the services that were recommended, such as blood work, were necessary, and if what she was charged was reasonable. BayScape Bistro At Heritage Isles — Best-Kept Secret No More! By Gary Nager

The husband-and-wife team of Eddie and Lourdes Bujarski have helped hundreds of young people learn how to safely prepare and cook food from all over the world during their 18 years of running the Culinary Arts Program at New Tampa’s Wharton High. That era ended at Wharton in December of 2017, after the Bujarskis took over the newly revamped restaurant at the Heritage Isles Golf Club the month before. When Eddie told me that during my most recent visit to their BayScape Bistro, I wondered why they continued to work at Wharton even though they had already taken the reins at the open-tothe-public eatery inside Heritage Isles. “Well, when you’re a teacher,” Eddie told me, “you definitely feel obligated to finish out the semester. We couldn’t just leave those kids like that.” That kind of commitment to their students is the same dedication the Bujarskis have brought not only to BayScape Bistro, but also to the local community — especially the residents of Heritage Isles. “We found that the residents weren’t really eating at the restaurant unless they were golfers,” Eddie says. “Lourdes and I decided that we would have to change that to be successful here.” And, change that they have. Although BayScape Bistro has a simple and not overly diverse menu, the menu items are all made with the same commitment to quality the Bujarskis tried to instill in their culinary students, many of whom have gone on to post-secondary cooking schools like the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and Johnson & Wales University, and on to professional culinary careers. In addition, at least 20 of those former students have worked at BayScape Bistro and several of them have told me how much they appreciate the Bujarskis’ no-nonsense approach to the restaurant business. “They really know what they’re doing,” says Tristan, a former Wharton culinary student now working on his four-year culinary degree at Johnson & Wales while he hones his craft at BayScape Bistro. Tristan (top right photo on this page) was the amazing young chef creating unique, made-to-order pasta dishes during BayScape’s recent Thursday night all-you-can-eat (for only $10 per person; $5 for kids under age 10!) sauté station, one of the restaurant’s newer “Daily Signatures” (see below for more on those). I can assure you that the smell of fresh

garlic being heated in oil is enough to get you to try the pasta station, which gives you options like tender, grilled chicken, mojo pork, bacon, fresh spinach, tomatoes and much more, with your choice of pastas and a hearty marinara or creamy Alfredo sauce — or try it “Gary’s Way” (registered trademark pending), with just the garlic and oil. According to BayScape’s online menu, Monday is “Sauté Night,” but Eddie says it has been so popular that the night Jannah and I were there (Thursday is also Trivia Night at BayScape) was the “tryout” for Thursday. Tuesday is “Take-Out Tuesday,” where Eddie, Lourdes and their staff create different-each-week to-go packages which feed a family of four — for only $20! I unfortunately missed the recent fried chicken Takeout Tuesday, but Eddie promised me there will be more. The center photo on the next page shows a recent grilled chicken (with all the fixins) Takeout Tuesday sample. Wednesday is Ladies NIght (with $1 glasses of wine for the ladies), but it also is “Wings Wednesday,” where anyone can get six Buffalo or mojo wings for only $5. On Fiesta Friday, which was mine and Jannah’s first experience with Eddie’s loyal crowd of super-fun regulars who come for dinner and stay for karaoke, you can enjoy tacos, fajitas and other Mexican favorites. It was our Fiesta Friday visit that convinced us

to have both my birthday party in January and my “Gary’s 25 Years of Neighborhood News” celebration in April at BayScape, and I heard no complaints about the catering-style food (top right pic on next page) at either of those events. Saturday is “Live Music Night,” with a rotating lineup of artists and groups performing. Eddie says it’s also the night where he usually serves a steak (bottom left photo on next page) or, occasionally, a fresh fish feature entrée, although he admits he hasn’t yet found a supplier with the kind of fresh fish he wants at the right price. Sunday is “Family Night,” where one kid eats for free for each adult entrée purchased. The kids also are kept entertained with indoor games. Jannah and I also have other favorites at BayScape, from the BayScape chef salad (with mojo pork, chicken and bacon and what Jannah says is the best ranch dressing around); the French dip sandwich (top left photo on next page), with real au jus for dipping; the same tender roast beef also is available as a dinner plate with brown gravy; the grilled chicken club sandwich and the BayScape Cuban. There’s even a grilled veggie and cheese sandwich on the menu.

Breakfast, Too?

You probably couldn’t help but notice that the featured pic at the top of this page isn’t any of the items I’ve already mentioned. What it does happen to be is a pic of the best breakfast I’ve had in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel. The thick-cut brioche French toast with two eggs perfectly over easy and the tastiest thick-cut bacon around shown above, with truly amazing cottage-fried potatoes and super- fresh (and delicious) fruit costs only $9.99. If you don’t need the French toast, the cost is only $7.99 with regular toast!

And, best of all, breakfast is served all day, so you can even have it for dinner if you have such a craving. Other breakfast dishes to try are the meat-lover’s hash, country fried chicken & eggs with pepper gravy, the “breakfast in hand” sandwich, pancake breakfast, create-your-own omelets and even a yogurt parfait with fresh fruit and house-made granola.

Still More To Come!

Eddie and Lourdes promise that more items will be added to BayScape Bistro’s unique menu, based on customer demand and boy, considering the place hasn’t yet been open for two years, there are a lot of regular customers enjoying the restaurant and bar, which has some of the most reasonable premium alcohol mixed drink prices around. Friday karaoke nights are always packed

and most of the main portion of the restaurant was full for Trivia Thursday. And, with Takeout Tuesdays averaging at least 50 family-of-four meals every week, it’s obvious that Eddie and Lourdes are building something special in New Tampa, even though Heritage Isles is almost at the Morris Bridge Rd. eastern end of Cross Creek Blvd. And, keep reading the Neighborhood News for more info about a family-oriented Back-to-School Business Expo, in conjunction with the North Tampa Bay Chamber, coming sometime in August! There will be food, games for the kids and booths available for kid-oriented business sponsors. BayScape Bistro at Heritage Isles (10630 Plantation Bay Dr.) opens at 9 a.m. for breakfast (8 a.m. on Sat. & Sun.) and stays open for lunch & dinner until 9

Touch Is Wesley Chapel’s Largest & Most Luxurious Nail Spa! More Techs, More Services

While the décor reflects a more upscale experience, with its high ceilings, large windows, and beautiful surfaces and fixtures, don’t let that fool you. Touch Nail Spa’s prices are affordable. Timmy says most customers come in for a manicure and/or pedicure, and the salon offers a menu of options to fit everyone’s individual taste. Having recently celebrated two years on S.R. 56, Touch Nail Spa now offers even more space to accommodate even more clients. Located in the Cypress View Square shopping plaza on S.R. 56 (the same plaza as Capital Tacos) in Wesley Chapel, Touch Nail Spa offers a beautiful, luxurious setting to enjoy a pedicure, a manicure, or one of the salon’s many other services, including eyelash extensions, waxing, facials and massages. Timmy Pham and his wife Tiffany opened the salon in March 2017. Business has been brisk, which led them to expand their space from 3,200 square feet to 4,800. The additional 1,600 square feet allowed them to add 17 more pedicure chairs (for a total of 33) and nine additional stations for manicures (for a total of 30). The new space opened last August. It’s a perfect area for private parties, and Timmy invites guests to reserve the space for groups from six to 20 people. “You can pick any services you want,” he says, “and all services are 10-percent off for everyone in the party.” Touch Nail Spa celebrated its two-year anniversary on March 24 by giving a free manicure or pedicure to the first 50 guests that day. Timmy designed the salon himself, and it is beautiful, relaxing, upscale and clean.

Timmy says that you’ll always be able to find the color you want at Touch Nail Spa. He carries 1,700 different colors (photo on next page), and every color available in a regular polish also is available as a gel color, too. That means you have access to 3,400 bottles of color. Manicures using dipping powder, which is a newer service, add a layer to your nails that is as strong as acrylic, but much healthier for your nails. Timmy says he offers the dipping powder in 2,000 colors. The thousands of colors are one thing that really sets Touch Nail Spa apart. “Everyone has dips, everyone has gel,” says Timmy. “We have more colors, and we have less waiting because we have more employees.” So, while he offers a relaxing experience, you can get in and out quickly if you need to. Joy is a Touch Nail Spa client who says she has been coming in since it opened. She still comes in once a month for a pedicure and dip for her nails. “Their customer service is amazing,” she says. “The atmosphere is nice and it’s not too noisy. Get Amazing Hair By Expert Stylists At New Identities Hair Studios By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN

While its original location in Tampa Palms has been open for nearly 20 years, New Identities’ newest location in New Tampa is both building its clientele and its roster of professional stylists. Owners Marc and Kelly Rockquemore now have three locations, including Tampa Palms, in the Shoppes at Amberly; a South Shore location in the Riverview/Apollo Beach area; and the newest location, which opened in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. about 18 months ago. New Identities specializes in hair styling for men and women, including color and cuts, plus perms, relaxers, conditioning treatments and even extensions, and also offers facial waxing. “At the end of the day, we want people to love their hair and feel like they got good value, too,” says Marc. “They look at their beautiful hair in the mirror and feel really good about the experience they had at our studio.” While the name “New Identities” implies dramatic makeovers — and they certainly do quite a few of those — Marc says that many of the studios’ clients come in on a regular basis for color touch-ups and trims every few weeks, too. “Our name makes you think we’re

and make it a point to bring in trainers to ensure that all New Identities stylists are trained in the latest techniques. “We put our money where our mouths are when it comes to continuing education,” says Marc. “We fly in educators from New York or Los Angeles or wherever to do classes for just our staff.” He calls the on-site training “a huge benefit to our stylists,” who otherwise might only see these types of techniques at an annual hair show with thousands of people in the room or by watching videos on YouTube. “That’s a completely different experience than having a trainer standing over you while you work on a mannequin,” Marc says. “The training benefits our guests, too, because it allows us to bring the latest trends and techniques to them.” He says he often hires stylists right out of hair school. Then, they go through an extensive training program to be sure they’re ready to style and color up to New Identities’ standards. “We have a six-month associate training program, which is one-on-one job shadowing with one of our top stylists, where they learn every aspect of what that stylist does,” explains Marc. “It’s a very hands-on, intense training program that takes their skill level up to the next level. We have full confidence in every stylist who comes out of the program.”

Of course, he adds, not every stylist who is hired has to go through the associate program. Depending upon their skill and experience when they are hired, they may only go through the program for a short time.” Marc says New Identities is always interviewing for new talent. “We put a different kind of spin on hiring,” says Marc. “A lot of businesses wait until they need to hire someone to do interviews, but we are always looking for the best people to fit our culture. When we meet them, we make room for them.” He says New Identities is more stringent than most salons about who they allow into the business, looking for stylists who also have great character and personality, and are happy to be at work. “We know it when we see it,” Marc says. “I get compliments all the time about how nice our staff is. That’s really important to us.” Tampa Palms resident Lisa O’Neil is someone who appreciates the salon’s commitment to both customer service and excellent training. Lisa has been a client at New Identities for more than 12 years. She started at the Tampa Palms location, but followed her stylist to the New Tampa location. Over the years, Lisa says she has seen three different stylists, and she watches how all of the stylists interact with each other — and with the customers. “They know what they’re doing,” Lisa says. “They keep up on training and all the new products.”

Neighborhood News

Lisa says she also loves the way she’s treated at New Identities, and appreciates the special touches, such as always being offered a drink and being referred to as a “guest,” instead of a customer. Lisa says she often gets unsolicited compliments about her hair from strangers, whether she’s traveling or just in the grocery store. “I’m pretty picky,” she says. “There are so many salons in the area, but I’ve never considered going anywhere else.”

A Budget For Everyone

New Identities now employs more than 40 stylists between its three locations. The cost for services varies depending upon the “level” of the stylist. Marc is always quick to clear up a misconception that a stylist at a lower level may be less competent than a stylist at a higher level.

@NTWCNews

“We have six levels of stylists, based on the (customer) demand for their time,” says Marc. “The misconception is that a lower level stylist is a less experienced or less talented stylist, but that’s not the case. For example, we have three stylists who just started in Tampa Palms who are veterans — they each have been doing hair for anywhere from eight to 15 years — but they are at a lower level because they just moved to the area and are building their clientele. Essentially, their services are ‘on sale.’” Marc adds that all New Identities stylists are competitively priced for the area, but the stylists who are at the lower levels have more availabilities. “We can accommodate people looking for beauty on a budget,” Marc says. It’s also important to Marc and Kelly

to be active in the community, so they participate in events that support worthy causes. On May 17, they participated in the annual “Fashion Funds The Cure” at Raymond James Stadium, where pediatric cancer patients are featured in a fashion show each year to raise money for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. In years past, New Identities also has been the official salon of both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders and the Tampa Bay Lightning girls. The studio has been seen on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” Fox’s “Ambush Makeover,” TLC’s “A Wedding Story,” the NFL Network’s “Making The Squad,” and MTV’s “True Life!” All three New Identities Hair Studio locations are open Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.–9 p.m.; 9 a.m.–8 p.m. on Friday; and 9 a.m.–6 p.m. on Saturday. Check Out The Little Free Library At The New Tampa Family YMCA! By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN

Getting books into the hands of those who want to read them has gotten a little easier for New Tampa residents, now that a Little Free Library has been installed and opened to the public outside the New Tampa Family YMCA. Raequel Tomsich, who serves as vice president of communications & public relations for the GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club (NTJWC), explains that a Little Free Library is a no-cost book exchange for the community. She says it’s part of a global phenomenon, with more than 80,000 of these community exchanges registered in 91 countries around the world at LittleFreeLibraries.com. Raequel says she fell in love with the idea of a Little Free Library when she saw one while on vacation in Bryson City, NC, last summer. When she returned home, her New Tampa Juniors club was discussing ways to support a statewide project of the GFWC called Book Heroes that aims to get books into the hands of 10,000 children each year. The GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club is a local nonprofit group that is part of an international organization committed to community service. Its members volunteer in the local community, raise money to support the club’s efforts, and meet monthly to discuss business, complete a hands-on service project, and plan upcoming events. Club members decided to install a Little Free Library in Tampa Palms to support the statewide reading initiative. They researched plans and obtained a GFWC Focus on Literacy grant provided by the Procter & Gamble Company to help with expenses. Little Free Libraries can look very different, but most are some variation of a wooden box. The New Tampa Juniors chose plans that resemble a house shape, with two shelves inside for books. It’s raised off the ground on a post. It’s also a personal project for Raequel, who says her father used to do woodwork and taught her husband, Mike, who has now used those skills to build the library struc-

Raequel says she and other club members add books to the library several times a week. Because books are borrowed so frequently, they need to be replenished often. Books can be donated by leaving them in the library outside the YMCA. They can also be donated by contacting the club through its Facebook page at Facebook.com/GFWCNewTampaJuniors or find contact information at GFWCNewTampaJuniors.org. “I love reading and the idea of getting books into the hands of kids,” says Raequel. “Especially in today’s world, with everyone Volunteers from the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club installed and maintain usually on their electronics, it’s good to get a Little Free Library outside the New Tampa people reading.” Family YMCA. SPRING FOOTBALL JAMBOREE RECAP Wharton 10, Freedom 0, in two quarters of action

Biggest Question

Biggest Question

WHARTON

The Wildcats had to answer the typical questions surrounding any team’s spring, but chances are, there were more of them to answer than in years past, following an abysmal 2018 season in which Wharton went 1-9, the program’s worst record since the school’s first two years of existence (1997 and 1998). The ‘Cats will have someone new under center, someone new in the backfield and some new pieces on defense, all questions head coach David Mitchell hoped to settle, or at least get closer to settling.

The Patriots had a slightly better season than the Wildcats a year ago, and a 10-6 victory over Wharton in September 2018 during the regular season was part of their 4-6 record. But, with the loss of 25 seniors, Freedom hoped that a number of their new players would be able to step up into roles vacated by graduation. “We wanted to see how some of the younger kids handle adversity,” said Freedom head coach Henry Scurry, who is heading into his second season. “We wanted to see who responded in various situations. All jobs are available at this point; we’re trying to see who can do the jobs consistently.”

The Answer?

Well, there weren’t really many answers at the spring jamboree against Freedom, as the Wildcats outscored the Patriots 10-0 in two quarters of football. At quarterback, 6-foot, 2-inch rising junior Emery Floyd got the reps but only attempted one pass and it was out of bounds. However, the Wildcats have yet to test out Tampa Bay Tech transfer Pete Stuart, who saw limited action in three games as a junior. Because he transferred in January, he was ineligible to play in the spring game. Mitchell hopes to settle the quarterback position over the summer during 7-on-7 work. In the backfield, the coach has already committed to rising sophomore Johnnie Cason and rising senior Benyon Williams. Cason picked up 19 yards on four carries, including a threeyard touchdown, while Williams ran five times for 31 yards, against Freedom. On defense, linebacker Michael Zellem seemed to have a strong command of the play calls and a nose for the football, and made a big stop on fourth down to force a Freedom turnover on downs. Defensive end Cole Essek, a rising junior, had a very strong game, creating quarterback pressure and making solo tackles, even ending the jamboree with a sack-forced fumble. Mitchell would like to see the 6-7, 170-pound Essek put on

FREEDOM

coach says he felt good about his defensive line play, but linebacker remains one of the Patriots’ biggest question marks.

Stars of the Game

One of the team’s few returners, rising senior Dontae Johnson, got some looks at quarterback in the spring game, as well as some reps at defensive back. Rising sophomore lineman Tawfia Thomas is another returner. Scurry also mentioned rising senior Edwin Greene as having a fairly good spring. Rising junior Joel Pierrelus ran for 19 yards on two carries as the “wildcat” quarterback in the spring game, and Scurry said that Pierrelus could end up playing a number of different positions.

The Answer?

Daveon Crouch (4) outjumps teammate Michael Reddin Jr. (20) to make the interception. some weight this summer but feels confident both Essek and Zellem will be major factors this season.

Stars of the Game

Essek was a force to be reckoned with on defense. He even flips around and plays offensive tackle next to a couple of behemoths in Xavian Bivens (6-2, 350) and Dorian Lewis (6-1, 325)….Kicker Zach Godbold nailed a 29-yard field goal with ease. Also a soccer player (and state javelin champion), Godbold should be a reliable point-maker when Wharton’s drives stall….Receiver/defensive back Daveon Crouch had a big punt return and an interception….Edwouens Marcelin blocked a Freedom punt and had a sack on the night.

“The jury is still out,” Scurry said. “There’s a lot of room for improvement. There’s a lot of things we have to clear up, like the quarterback-center exchange, and we weren’t able to establish a rhythm.” The Patriots looked a little lost in the 10-0 loss to Wharton, unable to control any aspect of the game. They established a school record last year for fewest points scored with 83, and don’t have anyone returning who scored a touchdown last year. Scurry did say that his defense, however, which allowed only 143 points (third-lowest in school history) is pretty much where he’d like it to be, although he is Freedom’s Edwin Greene goes low to catch a pass for the looking for someone to Patriots, who fell 10-0 to its New Tampa rival Wharton step up at linebacker. The Lagoon Review: Pricey, But Definitely Worth Checking Out! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com

Since opening its gates to the public, the Crystal Lagoons® amenity at Epperson Ranch has been a hot topic in and around Wesley Chapel. Depending upon who you listen to, it’s the world’s greatest amenity, or just a glorified community swimming pool; it’s a great day out with the family, or a money pit; it’s just like the beach, or a charmless knockoff. Nothing seems to fire up the locals more than lagoon talk. And, while we’re not here to settle the debate, after spending a day there with the wife, two teen-age boys and some friends, I can say this: While pricey, it’s definitely worth checking out. First off, the lagoon is not an amusement park. It isn’t Adventure Island, a comparison some derisively make. It isn’t a river, it isn’t a lake and it isn’t a beach. If you plan to look at the Crystal Lagoon through any of those prisms, you will be disappointed. Here, however, is what it is: a pretty cool and unique nearby getaway with sand, palm trees, crystal clean water and enough food, drink, music and activities to entertain your family for most of a full day. If you live in Epperson, congratulations. It is a fantastic amenity, and for $25 a month, I say it’s well worth it. It’s a slam dunk, really, unless you’re one of the residents unhappy that the public is taking up some of that beach space, but someone has to pay for the lagoon maintenance until many more of the

4,000 planned homes in Epperson are built and occupied. If you don’t live in Epperson, your perspective may differ (but remember, it wasn’t built for you). It is $25 per person to visit, but only $5 if you go with a resident (so make some friends while you’re there!). The $25 gets you in the door and, if you get there early enough, a spot on the beach, as well as access to the swimming areas of the lagoon. We heard no complaints about the refreshingly chilly water — now that the summer weather is turning all of our smaller pools into oversized bath tubs — but we did hear a few requests for more, or larger, swimming areas. Parts of the lagoon are roped off for the water obstacle course known as Wibit, and to make room for paddleboarders and kayakers to make their way around the lagoon. The swimming areas did seem a bit small, but that probably all depends upon the size of the crowds the day you visit. The water is everything developers said it would be — clean, clear and refreshing. The beach area was filled with folks relaxing in chairs, enjoying a beverage and working

on their tans. Because the surrounding areas aren’t fully landscaped, the lagoon can feel a bit sterile, but there were a lot of happy faces and energy in the crowds. You may miss the expanse, the salty air and the waves lapping at your feet while walking in the cool sand along the shore of an actual beach, but otherwise, the lagoon does a pretty good impression. We did wish there was more shade, but personal umbrellas are not allowed. If you can’t find a seat with some respite from the sun, there are shaded areas — in what is called “premium seating” — a few steps away from the beach that will cost you $12 for two chairs and an umbrella, and $20 for four chairs and an umbrella. It’s a gorgeous area, and is a purchase we agreed will be well worth it on our next visit.

The a la carte pricing at the lagoon — yes, even for residents, although they get a discount — can make for an expensive day, and some will find it annoying. The slide will cost you $10 for the day, not a bad deal for those who plan on using it over and over. A rock wall, which wasn’t open the day we went, costs the same. And the Wibit, which was a huge hit with the teenage boys and everyone else who tried it, is available for $10 for a 45-minute session. You can buy all three together for $20, which will save you some money, but you might want to skip the rock wall and save your money for an extra session on the Wibit, pictured here (left). Kayaks and paddleboards are available to rent for $10 an hour. Those who are serious about each might want to skip both — there’s none of the waves, scenery and wildlife that makes saltwater or whitewater kayaking and paddleboarding fun — but it’s great for those who don’t often get the chance and the always-calm waters make it ideal for first-timers. For example, we have friends who will spend seven hours on Crystal River paddleboarding, and we told them the lagoon might not be for them. But another friend, who is convinced alligators, sharks and snakes will devour her and her family if she joins us on a river one weekend, went to the lagoon a week later on our recommendation and rented a paddleboard and kayak and absolutely loved it, with plans to return every chance they get this summer. The lagoon does not allow outside food, See “Lagoon Review” on page 34.

‘Lagoon Review’

Continued from page 33 although you can bring your own water. We brought a large thermos, but were shocked to see bottles of water on sale for only $1. There also were $5 mimosa and bloody Mary specials, beers were between $4-$6 and things like hot dogs ($3) and nachos ($4) were very reasonably priced. Tampa Sammich, one of the popular food trucks that rotate in and out at the lagoon, was selling Cuban sandwiches — and they were quite tasty — and other grilled sandwiches for $9, grilled cheese and chicken wraps for $6, and canned and bottled sodas for only $2.

34

Perhaps we have been scarred by the ridiculous prices at concession stands at sporting events — raise your hand if you’ve ever bought a $15 beer — but we found the food and drink at the lagoon to be a bargain, and certainly much cheaper than we anticipated. The lagoon also has a stage for live bands and DJs, although nothing was playing the day we attended, and a shaded, sunken bar that also offers not only reasonably priced drinks but also great respite from the heat. One minor nit: the artificial green grass

in parts of the lagoon gets amazingly hot, so watch your step. We learned our lesson when starting a game of cornhole. So, is the lagoon pricey? A little. A family of four that decides to partake in all or most of

the activities, and then grab lunch, will spend at least $200. That’s an expensive day trip. But, bypassing the 45-minute drive to one of our Bay-area beaches, missing the traffic and parking hunt and not having to lug your chair and cooler across the sand might make it a more convenient option at times. The lagoon may never replace the beach, or a river or lake, or Adventure Island, but it’s not trying for that anyway. It is what it has been advertised as — a first-of-its-kind-in-the-U.S. amenity designed to sell thousands of homes and keep those local residents entertained. Is it worth a visit? You bet, if just to say you’ve been to the lagoon. We have. And, as everyone in our group agreed — we’ll be back.

Nibbles & Business The Latest & Greatest News In Dining, Shopping & Business In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel!

Full Circle Pizza Gets New Owners!

It’s always difficult to know how a popular local mom & pop restaurant will go once the original owner sells the business. However, in the case of Full Circle Chicago Pizza, located in the Pebble Creek Collection, it seems that new owners Julia and Freddy Nova are off to a great start. Freddy, who previously worked as a sous chef at the historic Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, NJ, and Julia, continue to serve New Tampa’s most authentic Chicago-style deep-dish and thin-crust pizzas (and they now serve deep-dish pizza every day), but they also have expanded Full Circle’s already impressive menu. My favorite dishes so far are the chicken & broccoli with garlic & oil shown above

(with garlic knots) and the Chicago Italian beef sandwich with melted mozzarella. I’ve also been told that the jumbo wings and the Italian sausage parmigiana sandwiches also are excellent. Full Circle Chicago Pizza (19651 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Unit B-2) is now open every day for lunch and dinner. For more info, call (813) 994-3700 or visit FullCircleChicagoPizza.com.

Why You Should Be A Samantha Taylor Fitness Sister!

As we’ve chronicled in these pages several times, Samantha Taylor Fitness (STF) now has five Tampa Bay-area locations — including one at 26908 Ridgebrook Dr, Suite 101, off S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel.

Since all five locations are for women only, it can be tough for a man to understand why so many women love and appreciate Samantha and her amazing staff. I understand it a little more clearly now, because I joined my wife Jannah (who trains at the Wesley Chapel STF studio) for Samantha’s most recent celebration for her six-week challenge participants. Held at the Hilton Garden Inn near the Suncoast Pkwy. (off S.R. 54), Jannah and I were among 220 people in attendance, including many husbands/ significant others of the participants, and Samantha said she had a waiting list because she had to close off attendance at that number. Challenge participants from all five studios were on hand (having lost about 1,500 pounds between them in only six weeks!).

They enjoyed a special Keto die-friendly dinner, but there was electricity in the air as Samantha and her sorority of women who work out together in classes (many also do one-onone personal training), and her compassionate staffers, received a variety of honors. Which women won which prizes (there were some great ones) wasn’t particularly important to me, but if you’re a woman who wants to get in better shape, feel and look better, in the company of others who share your goals, I now know that you can’t beat Samantha Taylor Fitness. What a great night! For more info, visit SamanthaTaylorFitness.com or call (813) 377-3739.

I had not heard back from management about Union 72 at our press time, but I hope to have more info by our next issue. • Speaking of the mall, our friend Wendy O’Neill recently moved her Creativity Unpinned store from the former Gymboree location to the former Crazy 8 location. Congrats on the move, Wendy! • If you’re looking for something fun to do with the kids this summer, I suggest a visit to the Licciardello Stables equestrian center, located at 3007 Sunset Ln.
