Locals Help The Bolts Bring Home The Cup! Tampa Bay Lightning head trainer Tom Mulligan & chiropractor Tim Bain may not have laced ‘em up, but they did contribute to the second Stanley Cup in team history!

By JOHN C. COTEY & GARY NAGER

The first Tampa Bay Lightning game of the NHL postseason went to one overtime, then two, three, four and five. In between periods, Arbor Greene resident Tom Mulligan, the team’s head trainer, scrambled to tend to cramps and injuries, keep the players hydrated and their energy levels up with grilled chicken, slices of pizza and bananas. “It was controlled chaos in between periods,” Mulligan says. And, unbridled joy afterwards. When Brayden Point scored the gamewinning goal to give the Lightning the 3-2, five-overtime win over Columbus, it set off a raucous celebration and catapulted Tampa Bay on a run that would eventually lead to the team’s second Stanley Cup championship. “That night, I felt this could be something special,” Mulligan says. “It was six hours, and just to see the controlled chaos in between periods was something. It really was all hands

“We won it in my second year in the NHL, and I thought, ‘This isn’t so bad,’” Mulligan says, chuckling. “We had most of the team back, we’re going to have more chances. Then the years start ticking by, players come and go, and you realize: it’s not that easy.” Mulligan is still coming down off the high of his second cup. There are few things like hockey celebrations, and Mulligan says Tampa outdid itself with the homecoming boat parade along the Hillsborough River and subsequent party held at Raymond James Stadium. The most recognizable trophy in sports, Mulligan says he is hoping to be able to bring the Stanley Cup to New Tampa. It is a tradition that each member of the organization gets to spend at least a day with the trophy. How Will The President Catching Covid Affect The Election? An editorial by Gary Nager So, there we all were, following one of the most ridiculous presidential debates in U.S. history, wondering how things could get even crazier in 2020. And then, U.S. President Donald Trump and his First Lady both came down with the novel coronavirus. Despite my lead paragraph, this editorial will be not a political rant. While it would appear that the maskers vs. non-maskers still have fallen largely along party lines — in part because of the President’s attitude towards them — I think it should now be obvious that Covid doesn’t care who you vote for on Election Day. But, considering that Pres. Trump is 74 and overweight, it was hard for many people who aren’t his staunchest supporters — some of whom may still be undecided about who to vote for on Nov. 3 — to understand why he seemed so adamant about not wearing a mask or social distancing or why he would continue to host huge campaign rallies, my questions are as follows: 1) Now that Trump and his First Lady and several of his supporters and staffers have contracted Covid-19, does it in any way change how you feel about whether or not masks are necessary? 2) For those on either end of the political spectrum who already believed that wearing masks and social distancing (and frequent hand-washing) were the only real ways to prevent catching the virus, does the President’s condition change or in any way affect how you will vote on Election Day (if you haven’t voted already)? Again, I’m not asking for a political reason. Although not everyone believes me when I say this, I personally have no Red or Blue political agenda. And, after watching the two men selected to run this country for the next four years both behave like children (I absolutely loved the meme shown on this page, which I borrowed from thestateindia.com), I have not backed (and likely will not back) a horse in this race — just as I didn’t four years ago. Obviously, I’m writing this editorial shortly after Pres. Trump was helicoptered to Walter Reed Medical Center and the reports about his condition at our press time were pretty vague. But, even though I’ve been a member of the local news media for nearly 27 years, I really didn’t have as big a problem with the lack of information being shared as some news outlets have, primarily because if we have learned anything about Covid since March, it is that it is an extremely unpredictable illness. Even though it definitely has taken its largest toll on our elderly population, some younger people with no comorbidities have died, while some older, obese people have somehow come through it OK. Unlike some people I’ve seen post on social media, I do not want our President to die, go on a ventilator or even have to deal with a long hospitalization because of the virus. And, I personally don’t need to hear every detail of his hospital stay in real time. I am confident that, God forbid, if the President does still take a turn for the worse, that the 25th Amendment to our Constitution will be invoked, Vice President Mike Pence will assume at least a temporary role as Commanderin-Chief and the American people will be told. I hope that I will know even more about Trump’s condition at some point before this issue is printed, but in case anything tragic happens to the President after this issue goes to press, I just feel that it needs to be said that not everyone who doesn’t count themselves among Trump’s biggest supporters wants him to lose his Covid battle. It’s not about liking him or hating him for me. It’s about hoping that our country can come through yet another 2020 crisis without destroyNeighborhood News

ing our economy, our way of life or losing even more of our citizens. Yes, I wish the President would have set a better example for all of us by wearing a mask all of the time, by practicing social distancing and not engaging in packed political rallies. Yes, I wish he would act more presidential and care as much about our citizens as he does about his TV ratings. Yes, I also wish we had a better choice running against him, because while former VP Joe Biden tried to not be drawn into the fray of the first debate, he failed miserably and looked ridiculous in the process. It was an unwatchable 90 minutes of TV that Jannah and I (and millions more of us) felt we had to watch, but we felt sick watching it. Even so, I still didn’t want Trump to get sick

‘Local Lightning’

Continued from page 1 from wife Kellie and their three children for a total of more than 70 days. In 2004, only son Tyler had been born; he was 14 months old when the Lightning won the cup. Tyler is now 17-years old and a senior at Wharton, and since, brother Zachary, 15, and sister Abby, 13 have joined the family. “It was really special coming home with the Cup and seeing them,” Tom says. He laments the sports and school events he has had to miss because of his job, and the bubble isolation made that even more difficult. “They have had to make a lot of sacrifices over the course of their lives,” he says, but adds that they are all old enough now to truly appreciate what dad does and the significance of winning the Stanley Cup. And, he was able to return home in time for Abby’s 13th birthday on Oct. 5. He told her before he left Edmonton he was bringing her a special present. “She probably won’t ever get another gift like it,” he says. — JCC

Bain Helps Victorious Bolts Deal With Aches & Pains Wesley Chapel resident Tim Bain, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), who has been the Lightning’s official team

chiropractic physician since 2009, says he actually has been treating Lightning players since a year or two before the Bolts won their first Stanley Cup in 2004. “I had just moved to the area and was living in West Meadows, along with a number of Lightning players, including Marty St. Louis, Nikolai Khabibulin and Fredrik Modin,” Bain says, “and Tom Mulligan, who was already the team’s trainer, started sending some of the players my way.” Fast forward to the unique season of 2019-20, and both Mulligan and Bain were among the 52 players, coaches and staff sent by the Bolts to live in the NHL’s “bubble” in Toronto for this year’s no-fans, two-bubble (the other was in Edmonton) playoff format. And, when the Lightning emerged victorious 65 days after first entering the Toronto bubble, Dr. Bain was among those celebrating with the new Cup champs. “There’s no doubt that hockey players are among the toughest of all professional athletes,” says Bain, whose office is in the Cory Lake Professional Center on Cross Creek Blvd. “They don’t like to come off the ice or complain about their aches and pains. But, once the team started to embrace the idea of chiropractic care, they could see that they could recover from injuries faster and get back on the ice even faster.”

Dr. Tim Bain hoists the Stanley Cup. (Photo provided by Dr. Tim Bain)

Bain adds that with the evenquicker-than-usual turnaround times between games (because of not having to travel) in this year’s playoff format, he was even busier caring for the players than usual. He also was the person responsible for conducting concussion protocols for the players who sustained head injuries. One of the Bolts’ players who attracted the most attention for his ongoing injury woes was, of course, team captain Steven Stamkos. Although the nature of his injury was never revealed, Bain says no one worked harder to get himself back into playing shape than Stammer.

“Even though he only played 2:47 in one game (Game 3 of the Cup final series against Dallas) of the entire playoffs,” Bain says, “I think the goal he scored while he was in there got the entire team as excited as the moment we won the Cup. Even though he ended up not seeing the ice again, he gave the whole team such a huge lift.” Bain agrees with Mulligan that the hardest thing about their time in the bubble for all of the Lightning players and staff was being separated from their families for so long. “I have a tendency to get homesick anyway, even just on road trips,” Bain says. “But, having to spend 70 days away from my wife and children was even harder. Especially when we shifted to the Edmonton bubble (for the last two playoff series), there was literally nothing for us to do. Being able to come home and celebrate winning the Cup with our families and the fans was so amazing.” And, Bain adds, the goal now is to “bring the Cup home again next year. It can’t be more challenging than this year has been.” He says that he plans to be on hand when next year’s team has to recover from injuries and everyday aches and pains. “I definitely hope to be part of another celebration!” — GN

School Board Race For District 3 Down To 2 By JOHNC. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com

When Mitch Thrower and Jessica Vaughn decided to run for the Hillsborough County School Board, things were a little bit different than they are now. In fact, the job they are both vying for — the District 3 seat that includes all of New Tampa’s public schools — suddenly looks a lot harder than it once did. In the past six months, Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on the school system, and the school’s budget situation has gone from bad to worse to downright terrible. “I completely agree it’s become a tougher job,” says Thrower, the former chairman of the Hillsborough County Planning Commission (he resigned in June). “There are some very tough decisions that are going to need to be made.” Vaughn, a Tampa Palms resident and substitute teacher who was elected to the Tampa Palms Community Development District (CDD) Board in 2016, doesn’t disagree. In fact, when it comes to discussing the biggest issues facing schools in the upcoming months, they both agree the budget and keeping schools safe — primarily from Covid-19 — are easily the top two issues of the campaign. Thrower, a Carrollwood resident, was

Jessica Vaughn (right, holding Cody) and husband Nilesh (holding Sunshine) and son Zachariah. the top finisher among six candidates in the August primary, capturing 25% of the vote, while Vaughn was second with 24.5%. The difference between the two was a mere 296 votes out of 42,950 votes cast. Now that just these two candidates remain, both feel voters will be able to draw a clearer distinction between them. The early voting period is October 19 through November 1, with Election Day scheduled for Tuesday, November 3.

When it comes to fixing the $32-million shortfall in the District’s budget — much of it due to the continued loss of students due to home schooling and charter schools — a lot of belt-tightening, including potential layoffs and program cuts, is in the future for the county. Vaughn, who has a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of South Florida, says the School District needs to stem the loss of students, and an evaluation to find out why more students are choosing charter schools — and how public schools can retain those students — is vital. “Why aren’t they choosing our public schools? That is the question that needs to be answered,” she says. “We need to fix that.” Vaughn, who has been endorsed by the Tampa Bay Times, also says the county needs to look for alternative sources of revenue, and make sure the money it does have is being spent wisely on items like administrative salaries and contracts with vendors. Thrower, who started his professional career auditing school boards at the State of Florida Auditor General’s office, thinks it is time for tough questions for those controlling the District’s purse strings. “I think my business experience is

both candidates are in favor of mandating masks in schools to deal with the spread of Covid-19, say teacher safety is a priority and approve of the other safety precautions being taken by the District. Both candidates said the School Board’s handling of the return to school in August, arguably one of the most important discussions it has had to make in recent memory, could have been smoother. Thrower says he will bring more communication to the position, which he thought was lacking during the controversial re-opening discussions. He also felt the School Board wasn’t “proactive and creative enough.” Meanwhile, Vaughn said she was extremely frustrated watching the School Board meetings, particularly the lack of planning. She said she was advocating in March and April for a plan in case the pandemic stretched into the fall, including the creation of e-Learning centers to accommodate parents who needed to return to work and didn’t have childcare. “Nothing would have been perfect,” she says. “You can’t mitigate a pandemic perfectly. But, I would like the School Board to be more realistic and proactive about our challenges and less reactive. It undermines public confidence in the Board.” Both candidates, who have children in public schools, say charter schools have a place in education. Thrower says charter schools provide options, “but they should be

held accountable just like public schools.” Vaughn says she is fine with not-forprofit charter schools, except when they hire for-profit management companies. “At the end of the day, all parents really want the same thing,” Vaughn says. “They want a safe environment that’s close by, that is free, that nurtures and respects their students and offers them a good education. And, I want to see that happen in our public schools.” Overall, Thrower had raised $58,500 but only had $6,500 cash on hand at our press time, while Vaughn had brought in $45,127, but still had nearly $28,000 cash on hand. Vaughn has criticized Thrower for taking more than $12,000 from developers while he was chairman of the Hillsborough Planning Commission, which examines and weighs in on development projects for the county commission. Thrower resigned from that position in June, to avoid any charges of impropriety. Thrower says he is running a nonpartisan campaign built on his experience and not as an activist. Since the primary, Vaughn has outraised Thrower $18,940 to $4,725, thanks to $12,000 in donations from the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee. Thompson, who was the general manager at Side Splitters since 2007 before buying the club in 2019, says it draws 70,000-80,000 people a year while mostly holding shows Thursdays through Sundays. That built-in audience is likely to translate nicely to the Wesley Chapel location, which also happens to be the home of some of Side Splitters’ more popular comics, like Rahn Hortman and JB Ball. Side Splitters Carrollwood has hosted a number of nationally-known comics, and Thompson says some of those big names also will come to the Wesley Chapel club. “We’ll definitely get comedians with some strong TV credits — some late night appearances, ‘America’s Got Talent,’ ‘Last Comic Standing’ — people like that,” Thompson says. Open mic nights also are popular at the club and will carry over to The Grove. So, get ready! “It’s a nice partnership,” Thompson says. “Mark’s vision is having a one-stop shop, where people can walk around, grab dinner, play a round of mini-golf and see a comedy show, without having to get in their cars to drive to each place. We’re very excited to be part of that.”

A Water Park For The Grove, Too? Jamie Hess hadn’t even opened his dueling piano bar, Treble Makers (see story on pgs. 30-31) before he was on to the next thing. A water park for The Grove? “I get bored easily,” Hess jokes. According to Hess, he was having a conversation with The Grove developer Mark Gold only about a month back when the developer asked what he thought about the idea of a water park, which could be built on 1.8 acres next to the Chuck E. Cheese’s. I thought it was absolutely brilliant,” Hess said, and he went ahead and jumped in as the point man on the project. He signed a letter of intent that same day. Hess says it wasn’t hard to convince him. After all, he was the first person to sign a lease with Gold, for Treble Makers. (Note - Double Branch Artisanal Ales had actually signed with the previous owners shortly before Gold bought the property.) “I think his vision for this area is great,” Hess says. “I wanted to be a part of it right from the beginning.” The water park will not be sprawling like Tampa’s Adventure Island, but will be family-oriented, says Gold, and small enough where parents will have no trouble keeping an eye on their kids. Hess says he envisions the park as something similar to Splash Harbour Water Park in Indian Rocks Beach, but larger — Splash Harbour (above) is on 1.3 acres, compared to the

1.8 acres planned for The Grove’s water park. The Grove park will have a lazy river and a variety of slides and splash zones. It won’t need a mini-golf course like Splash Harbour, because Gold is building a standalone course as part of his theater complex. The water park will have season’s passes, as well as oneday and four-hour passes. “We’re thinking $25 for a four-hour pass,” Hess says, “and we’ll keep it very very reasonable for season’s passes.” He adds that he is in the feasibility phase and, once that is determined, the design phase begins, followed by permitting. Within a year, Hess says, the park could be ready and he has already shown the county pictures of what he has planned and says, “they were enthusiastic.” — JCC

New Tampa & wesley Chapel News ‘WOBBLE’ GOING VIRTUAL This might be the year to check “run a Thanksgiving 5K” off your bucket list. While the biggest turkey day 5K in the area, Clearwater’s popular Turkey Trot, has been canceled for this year due to Covid-19, the local Wiregrass Wobble Turkey Trot will go on. Virtually, of course. You can still get a racing bib, shirt and custom “ornamedal” for signing up but this year, you will run the 5K (or 3.1 miles) on your own and upload your time to the Wiregrass Wobble Turkey Trot run sign up site. “This year you can race your cousin from Queens and your sister-in-law from Saskatchewan,” says Stephanie Walgamott, the Wiregrass Wobble co-chair and member of the Rotary Club of New Tampa, in the press release. Walgamott says participants can take the whole month of November to complete their 5K. Participants can run on their own or join a team. Prizes will be awarded to the friends/family, school and corporate teams who end up having the most registered runners and walkers. The 5K race/walk is one of the two largest fund raisers each year for the Rotary Club of New Tampa. Proceeds

DERBY DAY WINNERS The second annual Derby Day fund raiser raised more than $20,000 for the Emerald M Therapeutic Riding Center in Brooksville, run by former New Tampa physical therapist Lisa Michaelangelo. The event, held at the Hyatt Place Hotel in Wesley Chapel, was limited to 120 people, or half of capacity, and about 100 attended. Those not ready to venture out or concerned about the size of the crowd despite a host of coronavirus precautions taken by the hotel’s staff, the event also was streamed to provide a virtual experience. Usually held on the same day as the Kentucky Derby in May, the fund raiser almost didn’t happen this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “We were planning and then stopped planning and then started planning again,” says Michelangelo. “It was

a real blessing to be able to do it.” Because most of Emerald M’s clients, who come from all areas of Tampa Bay, including New Tampa, are more susceptible to coronavirus, the 20-acre ranch had to shut down in March, and re-opened in June. It features 10 horses and more than a dozen volunteers. The center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, usually hosts two fund raisers each year — the Derby Day event in May, which was moved to the rescheduled Derby Day (Sept. 5), and a gala dinner in October, which had to be cancelled. Jim Plummer Wants To Make Your Money Work For You! By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN Most people wonder if they will have enough money to retire comfortably, and many don’t really understand their investments, or know what they need to do to be prepared for their post-work years. “It’s so complicated,” says James B. Plummer, wealth advisor with ILG Private Wealth. “People need help in retirement.” Plummer, who goes by Jim, is an independent advisor representative (IAR), and ILG is a registered investment advisor (RIA). Jim says being an IAR — as opposed to working for a specific investment firm — means his primary responsibility is to put the client first. “I’m paid differently than a broker dealer (which typically charges fees for trading securities such as stocks and bonds),” he explains. “I can work with whatever companies I want to, (the ones) that best suit my clients. We look at the whole picture, so the client sees how everything dovetails together to be prepared when they get to retirement age.” That whole picture, he says, includes bonds, stocks, exchange traded funds (ETF), life insurance, long-term insurance, annuities (which is income

for life) and other options. While ILG Private Wealth is located in Pennsylvania, the company also has an office in Celebration, FL. Jim was working for the company in Pennsylvania when he and his wife of 44 years moved to Tampa Palms last October to be closer to family. Jim goes into the Celebration office as needed, but his clients only deal direct-

counting and Business Administration from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI. He became an accountant, then was a chief financial officer for 30 years for two multimillion dollar corporations. He says that during that time, he saw the need for employees to get good advice when they were “handed a lot of money” at retirement, so he got licensed to begin a new phase of his career. He says he has been an IAR for 18 years now, and that he has some clients who have been with him from the beginning. Because of his background working in business, Jim is particularly interested in helping small business owners prepare for retirement. “I’ve dealt with family business owners all my life,” Jim says. “I work with anybody who is interested, but my focus is on business owners.”

You Need An Expert

If you spend a few minutes talking with Jim, he’ll probably share some interesting tips that could help you retain more of your money in retirement. Here’s one example: “Most people probably have a 401(k) if they’re working, or maybe an IRA,” Jim explains. “If you look at how

much money that investment is worth, it’s not all your money. The government will take taxes out before you get it.” So, in some cases, he says, it might be more beneficial to put that money into a Roth 401k or Roth IRA. You pay taxes on it before you put the money in, but once you invest in a Roth, what you accumulate is all your money. “There are no taxes when you take that money out,” says Jim. “There’s nothing on the growth and nothing on the principal.” He says you can move money from a regular 401k to a Roth, but you want to move enough that you can afford to pay those taxes on it, but not so much that it puts you in the next tax bracket. Sound confusing? It can be. That’s why Jim says you need someone like him to help you figure it out. “We’re a planning organization,” says Jim. First and foremost, he gathers his clients’ information and focuses on finding out what their needs are: How long until you need your money? What do you want – or need – your money to do for you? Then he shares more of those valuable tips. Here’s another one: “Make sure there’s enough money for you,” he says. “If you want to give your kids a bunch of money, do it through life insurance. You could give

them an insurance policy that’s worth 10 times as much [as you could give them now]. You don’t know what life holds for you.” Jim also reminds people to keep their beneficiaries updated, saying that the beneficiaries listed on a life insurance policy or other investment supersede any will or trust. As life changes, you may want to change beneficiaries. He also can help you understand Social Security and the taxes related to Social Security benefits. “Most people have more money in Social Security than they have saved for themselves,” he says. While full retirement is at age 66, should you take your Social Security benefits then? Or, should you wait until you’re age 70? Or later? Essentially, he says, “Social Security is paying 8 percent on that money. You can’t earn that on money in the investment markets right now.” But, he notes that delaying when you take your Social Security still isn’t right for everyone, and Jim can help you figure out what’s best for you, your spouse and your family. He offers these words of caution, however. “You’re stuck with that decision the rest of your life,” he says. “You can’t make a change once you’ve decided what to do.” Jim says he helps many clients do a

Social Security analysis to decide what’s the most beneficial time for each of them to take that money, whether that’s early, late, or a blend of both.

Webinars Can Help

Jim has a series of webinars that he offers to help educate people about important financial topics, including how to plan for Social Security. Anyone, whether they are a client of Jim’s or not, can attend the sessions, which last about 45 minutes to an hour, depending upon the questions asked by the participants. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Jim says he would offer the educational seminars in person, but they are now

available online only, in the comfort of your own home or office. He says the technology today to attend his webinars is so simple, that you just click a link to get connected to the Zoom meeting. So, even people who are not technologically savvy are easily able to attend. Jim Plummer works remotely in Tampa Palms and will meet you at your home or business for a consultation. See the ad on page 33 for details about his upcoming educational webinars. Business Is Pretty Cool At Total Air Solutions By MIKE CAMUNAS Total Air Solutions has been serving not only the Tampa Bay area, but areas up and down the Gulf Coast, for the last 19 years. But, over that time, Total Air has mostly dedicated its business to commercial properties — from offices to medical clinics and more. It was only about two years ago that Total Air started servicing residential customers and co-owner and co-founder Bill Albert knows that’s one reason why there are those in our area who may not be familiar with his company. “We’ve been in Tampa a lot longer than people realize,” Albert said. “We hire local techs and we’re continuing to grow and are very interested in growing in the Lutz, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel areas.” While Total Air Solutions has made strides in its quest to become the go-to service provider for air conditioning in our area, Albert points out that the recent “new normal” brought on by the novel coronavirus and subsequent quarantining from the pandemic — such as working from home and virtual schooling — has led to a very large uptick in the residential air conditioning business. “Everyone is in their houses now,”

Total Air Solutions service tech Matt Bonnell inspects an air conditioning unit. The Tampa office of Total Air serves Wesley Chapel, New Tampa & Lutz. (Photos: Charmaine George).

Albert says. “It was fine when you left your house at seven in the morning (and could turn the air down). But now that you’re there 24/7… everyone needs the service much more because the air is always running. And, it’s Florida. So it’s been a banner year for our residential side.”

On The Grow From Day One

Albert figures that Total Air, which he started in his garage with fellow co-owner/co-founder Frank Decarlo, has

nearly doubled in size in less than a year. “To put it frankly, it’s going like gangbusters because everyone is staying home and they’re concerned about their air conditioning,” he says. “Our commercial side slowed down a bit, especially in April and May, but we’re seeing that pick back up, too, as offices have been reopening.” Albert worked for six years as an HVAC distributor for Carrier Florida, first in Tampa and then in Orlando,

and prior to that, he held positions in a solar hot water heating and installation company and a home energy design system firm. Decarlo previously was the VP/ general manager at a heating and cooling company in North Port, FL, for seven years, where he was initially hired as a service manager and grew that company’s annual sales fourfold. Prior to that, he was a service technician at an air conditioning firm in New York. Now, 19 years later and having combined their efforts, Total Air Solutions has offices in Tampa and North Port and 92 employees. “There are a lot of air conditioning companies out there, but there are very few qualified technicians,” Albert says. “We’re also Carrier-certified and (have won Carrier’s) President’s Award three years in a row, but we can also fix any brand because when you call us, we send you service technicians, not salesmen. There’s an industry term for that — an SID, or “salesman in disguise” — but that’s not what you get from Total Air. We’re not going to sell you things you don’t need. We try to find the total air solution for our customers.” Like any business, Albert adds, Covid-19 has affected the way Total Air

Total Air Solutions co-owner Bill Albert Solutions meets its customers’ needs. The offices were initially shut down and the employees were working remotely. And then, the technicians would go out to calls and drive separate vehicles. And, Albert says, Total Air is adhering to every guideline put out by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). “While we’ve been very lucky that we’ve been touched very sparingly with our employees and personally with this disease,” Albert says, “we are still taking every precaution provided by the CDC. (We use) masks, gloves, sanitizer, booties, covering the (cost of) testing for our employees — we’re just doing the best we can, like everyone else.”

Hurricane Season Mode

Albert adds that Total Air also is handling the “new normal” of visiting customers’ homes well, but also is in full hurricane season mode at our press time, knowing that any storm that hits the area could require a lot more service requests. “We’re very conscious of hurricane season because we know there can be damage or people can be without air conditioning,” Albert says. “We want to help them get it back up and running as quickly as possible.” And, Total Air does that very well and efficiently. It’s one of the reasons the company been able to keep customers from the very start. “I’ve been a customer with Total

Air Solutions for about three years,” says Carroll Grant of New Tampa. “It all started when my air conditioner went out in the middle of the night. They were here at 7 o’clock in the morning to install the new unit with no hassle at all, and I’ve been happy ever since.” Grant is aware that, as a Floridian, having a working air conditioning system isn’t a luxury. “Living here in Florida, having reliable air conditioning service is not just a request or a hope, it’s an absolute necessity,” he says. “So, my suggestion would be to anyone who needs air conditioning solutions, give Total Air a call. I would very much recommend them to friends and family — and I have.” Especially since Total Air is now offering three inspection for the price of two, a package which costs just $149. The special is only for new customers, who need to mention that they read about it in the Neighborhood News before the service is started. Albert says this special offer is one of his favorites because he knows it offers a great value to his customers, especially if they are using Total Air Solutions for the first time. He says the maintenance of an air conditioning system, even a new unit, is vital to keeping your house cool. “Just because it’s running doesn’t mean it’s perfect,” Albert says. “I ask (customers), ‘Don’t you change the oil in your car?’ So, you get the maintenance right there, and then you have another maintenance for the next year. It’s a great deal.” And of course, Total Air Solutions also provides residential and commercial heating services, including installing heat pumps, and offers indoor air quality and filtration solutions (more in demand these days, due to Covid-19), as well as duct work services, and you can even finance your new Carrier AC. Total Air Solutions’ Tampa office is at 1015 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. For more info, visit TotalAirFl.com, call (813) 247-2665 or check out their ad on page 37 for a great Carrier rebate offer.

By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN Attorney Brian Arrighi, the owner and managing partner of North Tampa Law Group, says his firm has the knowledge and experience to be your go-to expert if you need legal assistance for a real estate transaction, estate planning or probate. North Tampa Law Group is conveniently located in the Cypress Glen Professional Park, about a mile east of the I-75 exit off S.R. 56 (behind MINI of Wesley Chapel). The firm relocated there several years ago, after Brian originally opened it in the Tampa Palms Professional Center in 2014. Brian has been practicing law for more than 14 years, since earning his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, and a B.S. degree in Mass Communications from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He’s a member of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law section of the Florida Bar. He says the busiest part of his practice might be real estate transactions, as the housing market in this area remains very active. “It has been and still remains more

of a seller’s market,” says Brian. “If the home is priced fairly, we frequently see homes go under contract quickly, with multiple offers. In a seller’s market, we also see an increase in calls regarding ‘For Sale By Owner’ transactions.” He explains that North Tampa Law Group offers the same title services as

a title agency, but a title agency has to refer a buyer or seller to legal counsel if any legal issues arise. With a real estate attorney already involved, Brian and his team simply go to work addressing those issues, and act as your title agency. “It’s a convenience,” he explains. “We cover all the bases, whereas a title

Brian says that because of the Covid-19 pandemic, North Tampa Law Group has changed the way it handles closings, giving clients a variety of choices to allow them to close in the manner that is most comfortable for that client. “We can send a mobile notary to the client, or we’re even offering curbside signings, where the client pulls up in their car, calls us, and we send the notary out to them,” Brian explains. “Clients also can choose to sign in the office, but we space it out and clean the conference room in between groups.” In most transactions, the seller is the party who chooses the title agency, and sellers often use whoever their Realtor recommends. But, people are free to choose, so they can let their Realtor know they would like North Tampa Law Group to handle their closing and title insurance.

Taylor Oliveri, the firm’s title manager, works with clients from start to finish on real estate transactions to ensure that those transactions close without a problem. “Taylor is extremely responsive and very helpful,” says Brian. “Buyers and sellers are calling, they’re anxious and nervous and worried, and she’s great at bringing everybody back down to earth...calming them down.” Taylor says North Tampa Law Group will go the extra mile to make sure your closing goes smoothly. “As a smaller law firm, we have more of a boutique feel, rather than a large corporation,” she says. “We establish a good rapport with our clients and with Realtors, as well.” Many of the clients Taylor works with are those who are selling their homes without a real estate agent. “People want to save money by not hiring a Realtor,” she says, “and they still get top-notch service with us.” Seven Oaks resident Sandy Villeneuve agrees. When she was ready to sell a townhome that she owned as an investment property in The Bay at Cypress Creek (near I-75 off S.R. 56), she says she didn’t want to use a real estate agent. “Nobody knew the property better than I did, so I refused to pay a Realtor

thousands of dollars to sell it for me,” she says. “But, I couldn’t do the legal side of it, so I needed an attorney.” Sandy says she and her husband sat down for a consultation with North Tampa Law Group and were pleasantly surprised at the low cost of hiring the firm. From the first meeting, Sandy says it was a great experience every step of the way. “Brian was absolutely wonderful,” she says. “He and Taylor were so responsive and easy to work with. They made it a very easy transaction.” People looking to sell their property “by owner” can schedule a free phone or in-person consultation with North Tampa Law Group. At that point, Brian and his team go over the steps to the transaction and provide of the all necessary documents, such as a real estate contract, seller disclosure form and homeowners association documents. for the management of your assets and determining how to efficiently distribute the assets to your loved ones when you pass away. People are often most familiar with a Last Will & Testament document, which directs the distribution of assets, but does not avoid the potentially lengthy and expensive court process known as “probate.” North Tampa Law Group also can discuss a “living will” and other options to avoid probate. At a consultation with North Tampa Law Group, all estate planning options are discussed to avoid or minimize any court involvement. While probate might not be the best option for everyone, Brian says there are times when it can be beneficial. In addition to asset distribution, Brian adds that real-life factors — such as long-term health care, guardianship and insurance coverage — also are part of estate planning. “There is really a lot we can help you with,” he explains. “Many clients are relieved to find out it was not as expensive or as difficult as they thought.” Brian says that communicating effectively with clients is an important part of the firm’s success. “I think we do a great job of explaining things in simple terms and allowing the client to proceed at their own pace,” he says, adding that

many people don’t like to think about estate planning. “Addressing the issues is more difficult for some people and it can take a few discussions before they determine how they want to handle their affairs, and that is perfectly fine.” For those who have recently lost someone and find themselves needing assistance in the probate process, Brian is experienced in that area as well. North Tampa Law Group is located at 26852 Tanic Dr., Suite 102. Tyriq Outen Is Chasing An NHL Dream! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com The first time Tyriq Outen skated on ice at the Brandon’s Ice Sports Forum, he was 4 years old and decided immediately he wanted to be a goalie. A few weeks later, during his first lesson, his promising ice hockey career began... with his pads on backwards. “Then, he fell behind the net and got his helmet caught in the net,” recalls his father, Ronnie. “It was a comedy of errors.” That imperfect start, however, soon gave way to success at nearly every level at which “Ty,” as his family calls him, has played since. He went from being entangled in the nets to starring in them, and from being a junior standout to a legitimate NHL draft prospect with a bright future ahead of him. “I feel like this is where I belong,” he says. “I fell in love with it right away.” Tyriq grew up in New Tampa, and attended Turner Bartels Middle School. While his friends played Little League baseball and basketball and soccer at the New Tampa YMCA, Tyriq was part of a small but budding hockey community. He played for one of the best youth hockey teams in Florida, comprised of players from all over the state, but that meant lots of travel. He traveled by plane 2-3 times a month for big tournaments in the northeast and Canada, but mostly spent lots of time in the car with Ronnie driving all over the southeast. Ronnie, the basketball director at the new Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County, understood the lifestyle and demands for a high-caliber youth athlete. A former college basketball player who played professionally overseas, Ronnie understood it was all about exposure and training. When it was time to choose a high school, Ronnie and Tyriq moved to hockey-hotbed Boston and lived in an apartment. “When we were in Boston, he was literally on the ice 5-6 days a week,” he says. “No knock on Florida, but there was a rink in every neighborhood. Imagine if Hunter’s Green had one, and Arbor Greene and Live Oak had one, if you had 5-6 rinks in this

Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), the former team of NHL stars like Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Roberto Luongo, and just an hour north from his birthplace, where his goalkeeping family had built a following, how could he resist? It turned out to be the first speed bump in Tyriq’s career. The QMJHL is one of three major junior ice hockey leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League, along with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL). Acadie-Bathurst had loaded up the previous season to win the QMJHL President’s Cup, and they captured the Memorial Cup against the winners from the OHL and WHL. Tyriq says many of the players acquired to win the title in 2017-18 departed after that season. His new team won just eight games in 2018-19, and he finished with an 0-20 record, a 5.89 goals against average and faced nearly 1,000 shots in only 1,364 minutes. After a coaching change, Tyriq was released. “The fact that it was (so close to Miramichi) made it even worse,” Ronnie says. “The whole town was hurrah hurrah, the hometown boy is coming, everybody was happy for that to happen. So, it made it double the monkey on his back.” Ronnie worried about how Tyriq would handle his first-ever adversity. “I would be lying and he wouldn’t be human if I said it didn’t get him down.” Ronnie says he reached out to Tampa Bay Lightning goalkeeping coach Frantz Jean

for some guidance, concerned his son might retire his pads. Jean, however, reassured Ronnie that Tyriq was still highly regarded, and that NHL scouts will be watching to see how he reacted to his adversity. “The ones that are successful come out the other side stronger,” Ronnie remembers being told.

Getting Back In The Pads

Tyriq got back to work. Determined to come back even stronger, rather than give up, he doubled down on his efforts. When he was tired, he thought about Bathurst. When he didn’t want to work out, he thought about Bathurst. “I’m already up,” Tyriq would say as his dad walked into his room to wake him up early in the morning. “That showed me just how tough he really is,” Ronnie says. Tyriq’s bounceback started in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, in the Maritime Hockey League, a league below major junior. If playing near his hometown made the Bathurst experience more painful, then his first appearance at the Miramichi Civic Centre, against the hometown Timberwolves, offered some redemption — he stopped 34 of 35 shots in a 6-1 win. He went on to beat the Timberwolves two more times at the Civic Centre, and stopped 145 of 156 shots the hometown team fired at him over five games. Covid-19 ended the 2019-20 sea-

Tyriq continued to grind, ready for his next challenge, which came when he was chosen to play at the prestigious invite-only Beantown Summer Classic in August in Exeter, NH, where NHL scouts handle the coaching duties. “He was so proud of having some of the Lightning players’ phone numbers in his phone,” Ronnie says. “That was pretty cool for him.”

“That was a big deal for me,” Tyriq says. “I feel like I’m ready to do bigger things. It was a great experience.” Tyriq can’t return to Canada right now due to Covid, but was approached by a Calgary Flames scout at the Beantown Classic, who hooked him up the Maine Nordiques of the North American Hockey League. He left New Tampa last month to begin training, and the season begins Oct. 20. “He was in a bad situation before, but he’s recalibrated now,” Ronnie says. “This is a good situation for him. It’s going to be a good year. He is totally happy — you can hear it in his voice. And, that’s the best thing.”

Treble Makers — Delicious Food & Super-Fun Entertainment! By GARY NAGER

It was less than a year ago when Jannah and I visited Gainesville for her work and happened upon a non-chain dueling piano bar/restaurant called The Keys. We had already eaten dinner, but hung around for the entire dueling piano show on a weekend night and we both looked at each other and said, “Why can’t we have something like this in Wesley Chapel?” mutliple times. A few months later, Wesley Chapel resident Jamie Hess had a meeting with The Grove developer Mark Gold and discussed the possibility of bringing a non-chain restaurant/bar with live entertainment to Wesley Chapel and, a week or so after that, Jamie and his wife Sandy, Lee Bevan and Jamie’s brother Joe and his wife Niki became partners in a then-unnamed, unbuilt new restaurant and lounge. A few weeks later, the five partners realized they had stumbled onto the right thing at the right time when more than 1,800 different people (most, but not all

Kevin, who was trained at The Art Institute (AI) of Tampa, but has been a sous chef for multiple restaurants and catering companies in the Tampa Bay area, said that although he was fine with

@NTWCNews

many of their choices, he called the menu. “a little boring.” When he asked if he could get a little adventurous with their concept, he was told to go ahead and run with it. The result? Kevin and his fellow AI grad and head sous chef Jason Rosenberg came up with a number of unique menu items, some of which are on these pages. For starters, while my long-time readers know how much I love seared tuna, they’ve rarely ever heard me brag about calamari being one of my favorites. But, at Treble Makers, while the sesame-crusted ahi tuna (on a bed of homemade Asian-style slaw) is as good or better than what you pay more for at Bonefish, Kevin’s calamari is extra crispy and in a perfectly balanced sweet-spicy sauce that can only be compared with Ocean Prime’s in Tampa. So good. Then, throw in his top-seller, the Imperial crab dip, homemade potato gnocchi in a smoky Alfredo sauce topped with a homemade cheese crisp, Buffalo shrimp and unique wings and, well, you get the idea.

So, What Else Is On The Menu?

Jamie says that although Treble Makers doesn’t yet have a separate lunch menu, the full dinner menu is available for every day for lunch, and includes such midday-friendly items as blue crab bisque, French onion soup, house, Caesar and wedge salads, plus a brisket/chuck blend burger, grilled or blackened chicken sandwich and steak, fish or shrimp “Treble Street Tacos” — none of which are shown here but only because Treble Makers has only been open a few weeks as I’m writing this and I’ve been so enamored with so many of the dinner entrées. But, rest assured, I will eventually be dining in or taking out lunch from Treble Makers a lot in the months to come. There’s even a make-your-own pasta option with your choice of five sauces that I will try. For dinner, you can’t go wrong with a thick 6- or 8-oz. filet mignon, 12-oz. NY strip or boneless 12- or 16-oz. prime ribeye, all $23$32, and served with two sides (the fresh broccoli is perfect, and photographer Charmaine George says the garlic mashed potatoes shown above were outstanding; people also raved about the Brussels sprouts). I say they don’t need the $3 per add-on toppings like port demi, gorgonzola or lemon garlic butter because the steaks themselves are all tender, tasty and done to perfection — but they’re available. Mine and Jannah’s surprise favorite so far has been the coconut curry black grouper because we both thought we didn’t like anything

(Above left) Treble Makers not only has the well-marbled 12-oz. ribeye shown here, but also delicious filet mignon and NY strip steaks and more. (Above right) The dueling pianists always take requests. (Below left) The veal Marsala is served “just so tender.” (Right) curry-flavored. So wrong. The huge filet of absolutely fresh grouper shown on the previous page sits on a bed of basmati rice and keeps the curry flavor from overpowering the dish with a hint of sweetness and you will get fish, sauce and rice in every delicious bite. Yum. Another excellent sweet-&spicy combo that North Tampa Bay Chamber president Hope Kennedy Speaking of Covid, Hess says Treble and her friend Matt let me have a bite Makers, like every tenant at The Grove, of were the diver scallops in sweet corn sauce ready added live acoustic music on Thur. nights. disinfects every table as it is cleared and has garnished with jalapeños. Other great dinner Treble Makers is open for dinner evUV light sterilizers to disinfect the air entrées include Polynesian chicken breast, ery day., 4 p.m.-10 p.m., and is currently I told him I’d like to see the ultra-premipan-seared chicken or veal Marsala (Charmaine open for lunch at 11 a.m. on Fri. & Sat., um, full-liquor bar area (right), with honestly said her veal, right, was “just so tender”; it’s when it is open until 1 a.m. For more very fair drink prices, open to half-capacity also available with a port demi sauce), chicken information, including dinner and show “general admission” seating for the shows, but, or eggplant parm, salmon and a totally unique reservations, visit TrebleMakersofWC. he says, they have no such plans. However, they seared rare yellowfin tun in thick “slabs” with com or call (813) 406-4371. do plan to add trivia and karaoke and have algreen goddess sauce and a scallion medley that’s so much better than it even sounds, if you’re a tuna fan like I am. Save room for dessert, too, as we have sampled the three currently on the menu — Key lime pie, NY-style cheesecake with homemade whipped cream and a super-rich triple chocolate cake. In a word? Decadent.

What About The Music?

I’m glad you asked. Every Fri. and Sat. night, the dueling piano shows — which are 9 p.m.-midnight and are a separate cost of $12 per person (adults only) — feature different talented pianists who really know how to get the crowd going. They take requests — and tips help move your request up on the list — and Jamie delivers on his promise that every reservation gets you a socially distant table for four in the main dining area with great views of the action.

Pick Of The Week — YogaSix!

When I told lead instructor Laia Bové Imhoff of the new Yoga Six studio in the separate rear outparcel building at the Sprouts Farmers Market-anchored Village at Hunter’s Lake plaza that I wasn’t necessarily interested in Yoga Six myself because I’m about the least “bendy” person I know, she said, “That’s exactly why you should come and check it out.” Yoga Six, which is located next to the Fit Niche store in the plaza, held its North Tampa Bay Chamber ribbon cutting on Oct. 3 (photo), but has been open for a couple of months and Laia says that all 120 or so of the chain’s studios (in 30 states) offer six different styles of yoga and New Tampa now has 37 classes (many heated) available. “Right now, you can get one class for just $10 or an unlimited week of classes for just $20,” Laia says. “And we have classes for every ability level.” Yoga Six (8602 Hunter’s Village Rd.) is open every weekday, 5 a.m.-9 p.m., and 7 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sat.-Sun. For more info, call (813) 499-9505 or visit YogaSix.com.

SO MANY NEW RESTAURANTS!!

The months of Oct. & Nov. will be among the busiest times yet for new restaurants in the Wesley Chapel area. Here are some of the highlights: Florida Avenue Brewing Co. (2029 Arrowgrass Dr.) — With its opening as we went to press, I think our readers will be really excited about Florida Ave., which has a great menu and lots of room for social distancing (even at the spacious indoor and outdoor bars), in the former location of Sports + Field off S.R. 56. Florida Ave., which has its original location in Seminole Heights, isn’t yet brewing its awesome variety of microbrews at its new location — its original Florida Ave. location will still provide the beer — but it has a full-liquor bar, video games for the kids and delicious, food items, including both standard bar fare and unique options like the Chinese-style sticky ribs shown above (photo by Charmaine George), bibimbap bowls, crispy cauliflower tacos and many more. Please tell the Derby family I sent you! Bonefish Grill (Sierra Center Blvd., Lutz) — Although Wesley Chapel has had a Bonefish Grill for years, that location on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. is expected to close when the new Bonefish opens next to Aussie Grill — which could be in October as well. Although we weren’t able to get an opening date from parent company Bloomin’ Brands, there is a “Now Hiring” sign at the new location. Zukku-San Sushi Bar & Grill & Crumbl Cookies (25916 & 25922 Sierra Center Blvd., Lutz) — Of these two new options, located in the same building as the Woof Gang

MaHANa

Bakery and the new Charles Schwab office (east of Bahama Breeze on the north side of S.R. 56), Zukku-San looks closer to opening, although both places have “Now Hiring” signs out in front. The guess here is that neither will open much before the end of October. For more info, visit ZukkuSushi.com or CrumblCookies.com. Moschella’s Italian Eatery & Market (5648 Post Oak Blvd.) — Owner Billy Moschella says Moschella’s should be open by the end of October and will feature a deli, pizza, fresh pastas, a butcher shop, hot prepared foods and much more. He’s also hiring cooks, pizza makers, deli workers and cashiers. To apply or for more information, visit Moschellas.com!

Rock & Brews (26000 S.R. 56, Lutz) — Our Rock & Brews will be the 18th link in this chain of rock-themed restaurants owned in part (and inspired) by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the rock band Kiss. In order to preview Rock & Brews in this issue, I visited the aptly-named “Kiss”-immee location, and I definitely came away impressed with the look of the place (with images of rock icons from Kiss to Prince and from Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen adorning the walls) to the food, including the blackened redfish shown top left (it comes with a Louisiana-style crawfish cream sauce that I couldn’t eat because of my shellfish allergy)and a semi-spicy bruschetta. Rock & Brews (visit RockandBrews.com) should open by early Nov. Chuck Lager America’s Tavern (2001 Piazza Ave., Suite 175) — So, according to the restaurant’s website, Chuck Lager is a worldwide archeological adventurer who decided to venture into opening made-fromscratch restaurants that exemplify his love of great cuisine. Lager met “Top Chef” fan favorite Fabio Viviani in Viviani’s grandmother’s Italian kitchen and a concept was born. With locations in Pike Creek, DE, and Barrington, NJ, the Lager team came to “The Chap” to take over the never-good-enough former Primebar location at the Shops at Wiregrass. It doesn’t look like Chuck Lager will make it to an Oct. opening, but hopefully, we’ll see this tomato bacon grilled cheese with tomato bisque (above), homemade meatballs and chicken parm sooner than later. (Visit ChuckLager.com.)

Also Coming Soon (Oct./Nov.) To The Grove... • Brooklyn Bagel Co. • King of the Coop chicken • Falabella Family Bistro
