To Vote! By John C. Cotey John@NTNeighborhoodNews.com
Shaun Dunn says sales of Trump merchandise are a good indicator of how well the President will do in Florida. The polls say otherwise. (Photo by John C. Cotey)
If local merchandise sales are any indication, Donald Trump is headed to a landslide re-election on Nov. 3. That’s how Shaun Dunn sees it, anyway. The businessman runs a Trump tent right next to his Joe Biden tent at the entrance to The Grove in Wesley Chapel, and says the Republican president is outselling the Democratic former VP 10-to-1. He is admittedly not a political scientist or pollster, but he is a numbers guy, and he thinks they are saying something. “If there really is 50 percent support of Biden, that tent should really have way more people,” he says. “As far as I’m concerned it just really shows you that the silent majority is more than you think.” Based on his sales and the interest people stopping by have shown, he thinks Wesley Chapel

is Trump Country. Memorabilia like Trump-branded magnets, yard signs, hats, coins, mugs and yes, even masks to protect you from the spread of coronavirus, are flying off his tables. Flags and the iconic red Make America Great Again hats are his best sellers, and Dunn says he has sold 250 life-size cutouts of Trump – at $75 a pop – since opening his stand on Sept. 1. Before he could open his Trump tent at The Grove, however, he had to agree to open a Biden tent as well. Mark Gold, who is developing The Grove, insisted Dunn do a tent for each candidate, as he didn’t want to get caught in any political quandary. “I told him if he wants to do one, he does both,” Gold says. “To be fair.” See “Vote” on page 4!

How Crazy Will This Election Get? It Is 2020, After All! An editorial by Gary Nager Considering that I didn’t cast a ballot for U.S. President back in 2016 (and took a lot of heat for it, from friends and readers on both ends of the political spectrum), it should come as little to no surprise that unless something changes between now and when I cast my ballot in this year’s General Election, I probably am not going to vote for either President Donald Trump or former Vice-President Joe Biden (or any other candidate) this year. Oh, just as I did in 2016, I’m still going to vote, I just don’t feel, in all good conscience, that I can vote for either of these two men to lead our country for the next four years. “Well, that means you can’t complain if you don’t like who ends up getting elected,” is what many of my detractors told me in ‘16. I countered that, as an American citizen, I have the right to do anything I want (as long as it’s legal), I just felt that I would rather let the rest of the country decide between two candidates I can’t personally support — which also is my right. And, just to repeat myself, just because I didn’t cast my vote for Trump or former First Lady Hillary Clinton in ‘16, doesn’t mean I didn’t vote. I did vote for the local and state candidates I felt I could support — some of whom won and some who lost — and I felt pretty good about most of the people and amendments I did support. And yes, I’m going to vote again this year, most likely by a mail-in ballot that I requested and received from Pasco Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley’s office. I have no desire whatsoever to vote in person and, based on the lines from Day One at Pasco’s early voting locations, I don’t think I’m going to drop off my ballot, either. Covid-19 has affected so many aspects of our daily lives and although I’m still wearing a face mask everywhere in public I do go, way too many of you aren’t doing the same, so even with my vote, I still feel I need to do everything I can to protect myself. As for who I’m voting for in some of the other elections on the Nov. 3 ballot, I’d rather not say, but I do think I know how I’m going to vote on all of the six Amendments to the Florida Constitution that also are on my ballot — several of which I have fairly strong feelings about: On Amendment 1, I say Yes, you should have to be a U.S. citizen to vote in any election, although I foolishly thought it was already a requirement nationwide. On Amendment 2, considering the cost of living these days, I don’t feel that even $10 per hour is much of a living wage, and I have no problem with the $1-per-hour-peryear increase through 2026, so I’m voting Yes. On Amendment 3, I feel very strongly that in Primary Elections, only registered Republicans should vote for Republican candidates and Democrats for Democratic candidates, unless there is no opposition candidate, which is the system we currently have in place, so I’m voting No on changing that. On Amendment 4, I feel that we already have too many such amendments to deal with every year, so to require any amendment to have to be approved in two elections gets a hard No from me. I’m not really 100% sure how I feel about Amendment 5, but will likely vote Yes because I feel that homeowners (even though I’m not currently one) should get as much benefit as they can since owning a home continues to only get more expensive. And finally, I also feel that any spouse of any deceased or disabled veteran should get as much benefit as possible from their spouse’s service, so I’m voting Yes on Amendment 6. Even if you disagree with everything I’ve said here, I hope you’ll exercise your right to vote in this very important General Election. Neighborhood News
Correction From Last Issue In the story about the new Treble Makers Dueling Piano Restaurant & Bar last issue, I cited incorrect open hours on Sunday, and I wanted to set things right. Treble Makers is actually open for lunch every day, beginning at 11 a.m., so if you want to have a great meal while watching NFL football on Sunday afternoons, you can (and probably should). I apologize for the error and for any inconvenience it may have caused, especially since Treble Makers is fast becoming a local favorite of mine for both delicious food and great music. Continued from page 1. Dunn says he was fine with the idea. In fact, he kind of liked it. “I got to thinking about it, and you know, that’s probably the right thing to do,” he says. “That way, everybody gets a chance.” In fact, Dunn has opened Biden tents next to his Trump tents at his Holiday Mall location, also owned by Gold, and in Lakeland. The Biden tent at The Grove was his first, and he says he has never seen any others in his travels. Suli Torres works the Biden tent. She jokes that she got the short end of the stick, but since she will be voting for Biden, she is fine with it. “Everyone is pretty excited to see me, I’ve even had people offer me food and drinks,” she says, then adding, with a chuckle, “maybe they feel sorry for me.” Torres was engaged in a conversation with a customer about climate change when we visited on a Monday morning, although that conversation was interrupted by a young woman wanting to purchase a Biden hat. At the Trump tent, though, Dunn was busy ringing up a pink “Women For Trump” t-shirt and a matching pink hat for one customer, and a mask and a coffee mug for another Does the popularity of the Trump

tent concern Torres when it comes to the Nov. 3 election? Not really. “Florida is a Republican (controlled) state, so I’m okay with it,” she says. “I will cast my vote and hope for the best.” Dunn eschews political talk at either tent. He says his employees are trained not to get political with customers. He is unwilling to debate Trump vs. Biden, and says he is only there to make money. “They all want to talk politics,” he says. “I don’t say nothing. Basically, I tell them ‘I hear ya,’ because I don’t want to be getting involved. I like somebody, but I prefer not to say. I’ll vote for who I like. But, this is just a business for me.” The one thing the Trump and Biden tents, which are spaced about 10 feet apart, do have in common? The amount of vitriol those working them have had to endure. Due to the toxicity of the country’s political climate, Dunn and Torres each say they have been sworn at and threatened by people driving by or leaving after purchasing something from the other tent. Financially, the Biden tent only makes enough money to cover what Dunn pays his employees and the rent. The Trump
tent has been far more lucrative. Dunn says four of his former employees left him to start their own Trump tents, and are all doing well. He wishes he had started selling it sooner. “I’d be able to retire by now,” he says. However, do sales equal votes? Even in 2016, the Trump merchandising operation was a juggernaut, and he lost the popular vote by roughly 3-million nationwide to former First Lady Hillary Clinton, while claiming a narrow 70,000vote edge in crucial battleground states Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to give him a victory in the electoral college. (Trump won Florida by 112,000 votes; he won Pasco County by 52,000). This election, the polls are favoring Biden — by larger margins than they favored Clinton — but Trump gear is just

as prevalent, if not moreso, than four years ago. How those numbers will add up on election day remains to be seen. The only math that really matters, however, is the nationwide final tally of votes. Record turnout is expected all across the country. Dunn is likely correct about Wesley Chapel, and more broadly Pasco County, being Trump Country. Republicans have unanimously controlled the five-person County Commission for many years, and there are currently 159,127 registered Republicans, or 26,100 more than in 2016. Meanwhile, there are only 118,127 registered Democrats in Pasco, an increase of only 10,800. There also are 109,682 registered voters who did not list a party affiliation, an increase of 27,000 from the 2016 election. One thing that is certain: Pasco County will vote. Presidential election voter turnout has averaged well over 70 percent since 1984, according to the PascoVotes.gov website. In 2016, the voter turnout was 73 percent. In fact, residents were voting long before early voting even started on Oct. 19, as more than 70,000 mail-in votes already had been received, accounting for 18 percent of all registered voters in Pasco. And, with this election expected to break turnout records across the country, Tami Bentley, the director of voter administration for Pasco County, says they are ready not just for more voters,
@NTWCNews
but more socially-distant voters, due to Covid-19 concerns. “We have worked closely with Pasco County to secure some larger early voting facilities,” Bentley says, like the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County. In addition, mail drop boxes will be posted at every early voting site for the first time, hopefully assuaging fears about mail-in ballot voter fraud being perpetuated on social media and by President Trump himself. Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco and Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley also put out a joint statement promising a safe environment at all early voting locations, all of which will be manned by Poll Deputies.
Interesting Local Races
While Trump-Biden tops the ballot and is driving the expected record voter turnout, other races that have local implications include: Superintendent of Schools: Kurt Browning, the Republican who easily won his primary, is running for his third term against Bayonet Point Middle School teacher Cynthia Thompson, who says the District needs an educator to fix it. State Senator District 20: Republican Danny Burgess resigned as executive director of the Florida Department of Veteran’s Affairs in June to run against Democrat Kathy Lewis in this special election to replace Tom Lee, who retired. State Representative District 38: Republican Randy Maggard won the 2018
election to replace Burgess, and is defending his seat against Democrat Brian Staver. Pasco County Commission, District 3: Incumbent Republican Kathryn Starkey, first elected in 2012, has raised more than $200,000 in her bid to keep her seat against Democrat Jessica Stempien, who has raised $30,000. Pasco County Commission, District 5: Incumbent Republican Jack Mariano is seeking his fifth term (he was first elected in 2004) against Democrat Brandi Geoit and independent Victor Rodriguez. Florida 12th U.S. Congressional District: Republican incumbent Gus Bilirakis, who replaced his father Mike (who served for 25 years) when he was first elected to the District 9 seat in 2007, is trying for another term in District 12 (which he has represented since 2013) against Democrat Kimberly Walker. Early voting continues through Oct. 31, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Vote By Mail drop boxes are available at each early voting site, including the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus (3021 Sports Coast Way), AdventHealth Center Ice (3173 Cypress Ridge Blvd.) and the New River Library (34043 S.R. 54). The general election is Tuesday, November 3, when polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.. Wesley Chapel has 13 polling places, which can be found by visiting PascoVotes.gov or by checking your voter registration information.

How About Two Libraries For Wesley Chapel? By JOHN C. COTEY john@neighborhoodnews.com Wesley Chapel has been without a library for more than a year since the only previous location, the New River Branch Library on S.R. 54, began a major facelift. That facelift, which will feature areas for teens and children, remodeled bathrooms, new furniture, an improved community garden and covered learning space, should be completed by January, but that hasn’t stopped District 2 Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore from looking ahead to another library for the area. “I think the time is right,” Moore says, pointing to the massive growth the area has witnessed in recent years, as well as the tens of thousands of homes still planned for the future. Moore pitched the idea to his fellow county commissioners last week. As usual, it will all come down to finding the money to build what Moore expects would be roughly a $10-million endeavor. The land already is owned by Pasco County, Moore says. It is right in front of Seven Oaks Elementary, off of Mystic
tions program manager, says it could take 3-4 years to bring the project to fruition. He agrees that Wesley Chapel’s rapid growth warrants a second library. “We definitely look at the growth areas and Wesley Chapel is probably the fastest growing area in Pasco County and has been for some time,” he says. “It definitely could use another library based on its population growth.” Many of the county’s libraries have been refurbished and received updated maker spaces. For example, the Regency Park Library in New Port Richey has a test kitchen, the Hudson library has a recording studio, and both were decided on by local residents. Kinnan-Mansfield Connected, Just For Emergencies By JOHN C. COTEY

is to go south to Cross Creek Blvd. Bicyclists and pedestrians choosing to cross from New Tampa into Wesley Chapel also have new paved paths to travel across the Hillsborough-Pasco county line. The fight over the connection produced arguments between county officials on both sides, petitions by residents like Dillinger and even a year-long study looking at other potential connections.

Pasco and Hillsborough counties have finally connected K-Bar Ranch and Meadow Pointe, but only for emergency vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. The contentious connection of Kinnan St. in New Tampa to Mansfield Blvd. in Wesley Chapel is expected to finally became functional this week. “I’m totally satisfied,” says Chris Dillinger, the Meadow Pointe II resident who helped lead the charge against connecting the roads because of the potential of increased traffic of New Tampa residents on Mansfield Blvd., which has three schools along it. The former 40-foot patch of dirt, bushes and trees that has kept that from happening finally has been paved over, and a mechanical arm has been installed to make sure only emergency service vehicles can get by. City of Tampa and Hillsborough County politicians, as well as many KBar Ranch, Live Oak and Cross Creek residents, wanted Kinnan-Mansfield connected to help relieve congestion. Kinnan St. is the only way in or out of K-Bar Ranch, and the only option upon exiting
That study led to a decision to allow connections at Meadow Pointe Blvd. and Wyndfields Blvd. to K-Bar Ranch Blvd., the main road running east-west through that massive New Tampa development, which still has nearly 1,000 homes slated for future construction. Work already has begun on connecting Meadow Pointe Blvd., which runs north and south, to K-Bar Ranch Blvd. Dillinger says that while he is happy,
others in Meadow Pointe II are not. They feel the paving of the road and the lessthan-imposing mechanical arm won’t keep cars out and is just the first step to allowing all traffic to use the connection. “My whole thing was that this will give time for the Meadow Pointe Blvd. connection to be made,” Dillinger says. “That’s really the big picture. We definitely need a connector. It just didn’t need to be at Mansfield.”

Located at The Grove shopping center (6105 Wesley Grove Blvd.), this year’s festival will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The 16th annual Wesley Chapel Fall Festival will be hosted by the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce (NTBC). “We’re proud to be able to bring it to the community,” says Hope Kennedy, NTBC president and CEO. “We weren’t sure we would be able to do it.” She and event producer Drew Cecere of Florida Penguin Productions say they have made changes to this year’s event, including reducing the number of vendors, spacing the booths out to be more socially distant, conducting temperature checks, and adding hand sanitizer stations. They also emphasize that the Fall Festival is the same one you’ve come to know and love year after year, and that the Chamber event is not affiliated with other events happening at The Grove on other weekends.
“Once again, it will be a free community event,” says Kennedy. What will be different this year is that live concerts have been added, with a $10 entry fee per person. “We’ve had bands under a tent in the past,” says Cecere, “but this year, we’ve brought in bigger name bands to do an actual concert.” Headliners include The Black Honkeys Band and The Greg Billings Band. A complete band lineup is listed on the event website at FloridaPenguinProductions. com/Wesley-Chapel-Fall-Fest. The website also lists details for all of the weekend’s festivities, including a free trunk-or-treat, pet costume contest, community stage, Little Miss and Little Mister Pumpkin pageants, and more. In addition to 15 food trucks, Kennedy says the Chamber has partnered with the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel to offer beer for sale. Another 40-50 vendors will sell crafts, holiday gifts, bath products and local honey, among many other items. As always, the festival is family-friendly event and pets are welcome. A carnival with rides will be held Fri.-Sun. Tickets and wristbands can be purchased at the event, but are discounted if purchased online in advance.

Locals Help The Bolts Bring Home The Cup! By GARY NAGER Wesley Chapel resident Tim Bain, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), who has been the Lightning’s official team chiropractic physician since 2009, says he actually has been treating Lightning players since a year or two before the Bolts won their first Stanley Cup in 2004. “I had just moved to the area and was living in West Meadows, along with a number of Lightning players, including Marty St. Louis, Nikolai Khabibulin and Fredrik Modin,” Bain says, “and Tom Mulligan, who was already the team’s trainer, started sending some of the players my way.” Fast forward to the unique season of 2019-20, and both Mulligan and Bain were among the 52 players, coaches and staff sent by the Bolts to live in the NHL’s “bubble” in Toronto for this year’s no-fans, twobubble (the other was in Edmonton) playoff format. And, when the Lightning emerged victorious 65 days after first entering the Toronto bubble, Bain and Mulligan were among those celebrating with the new Cup champs. “There’s no doubt that hockey players are among the toughest of all profes-

He also was the person responsible for conducting concussion protocols for the players who sustained head injuries. One of the Bolts’ players who attracted the most attention for his ongoing injury woes was, of course, team captain Steven Stamkos. Although the nature of his injury was never revealed, Bain says no one worked harder to get himself back into playing shape than Stammer. “Even though he only played 2:47 in one game (Game 3 of the Cup Tampa Bay Lightning team chiropractor final series against Dallas) of the entire Dr. Tim Bain hoists the Stanley Cup. playoffs,” Bain says, “I think the (Photo provided by Dr. Tim Bain) goal he scored while he was in there sional athletes,” says Bain, whose office got the entire team as excited as the is in the Cory Lake Professional Center moment we won the Cup. of the Lightning players and staff was being separated from their families for so long. “I have a tendency to get homesick anyway, even just on road trips,” Bain says. “But, having to spend 70 days away from my wife and children was even harder. Especially when we shifted to the Edmonton bubble (for the last two playoff series), there was literally nothing for us to do. Being able to come home and celebrate winning the Cup with our families and the fans was so amazing.” He says that the NHL did the bubble perhaps better than any other sport, as there were no reported Covid-19 cases among any of the players, coaches or staffers. Bain adds that the goal now is to, “bring the Cup home again next year. It can’t be more challenging than this year has been.” He says that he plans to be on hand when next year’s team has to recover from injuries and everyday aches and pains. “I definitely hope to be part of another celebration!” Bain wasn’t the only local in the bubble. F45 At The Grove Ribbon Cutting — Here’s What You Missed! By GARY NAGER
Photos by CHARMAINE GEORGE
It was one of the first ribbon cuttings hosted by the North Tampa Bay Chamber (NTBC) since the Covid-19 pandemic began, and there was a nice crowd of mask-wearing, still-socially-distant locals on hand to wish owners Bob and Kimberly Balfe of F45 Training at The Grove well on September 10. Because of the pandemic, F45 (which is short for “Functional 45-minute workouts”) had been open for about three months before the Grand Opening could be held, and the Balfes were happy to finally get their studio open and running. “Trying to open during the pandemic was challenging,” Bob said at the ribboncutting, which was attended by Pasco County Commissioners Mike Moore and Jack Mariano, as well as by The Grove developer Mark Gold. “But, we have more than 36 different programs and 1,600 different exercises that we rotate through, so every day is a completely different workout.” Head trainer Kristy Myers Hess explained that having personal trainers on the floor gives every small group class at F45 a more personal, one-on-one touch, “and you really should come check out the technology we use, which lets you see what (exercises) you’re going to do that day.”

Cozy Research & Lifetime Family & Urgent Care To Begin Local Covid-19 Study By JOHN C. COTEY Wesley Chapel will be helping with the fight against Covid-19, and you can help, too. Participants will receive a one-time injection of the monoclonal antibodies, which should be effective for six months to a year, and will have to check back five times over the next year to see if the antibodies are still present. “The hope of the study is that 90 percent of the people will never end up getting Covid,” DeWeese says. Those taking part in the antibody study will not necessarily be protected from the virus. The injection of antibodies does not replace hand washing and mask wearing, DeWeese says. “You still need to exercise caution; this is just another layer of protection.” Cozy Research will be pre-screening patients over the phone and will give priority based on medical need or risk factors. North Tampa Law Group Can Help With Estate Planning & More! agency can’t address anything that requires legal advice or legal documents.” He adds that hiring North Tampa Law Group to handle a real estate closing doesn’t necessarily increase the cost of a transaction without an attorney. “Our fees are very competitive compared to a standard title agent,” Brian says.
By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN Attorney Brian Arrighi, the owner and managing partner of North Tampa Law Group, says his firm has the knowledge and experience to be your go-to expert if you need legal assistance for a real estate transaction, estate planning or probate. North Tampa Law Group is conveniently located in the Cypress Glen Professional Park, about a mile east of the I-75 exit off S.R. 56 (behind MINI of Wesley Chapel). The firm relocated there several years ago, after Brian originally opened it in the Tampa Palms Professional Center in 2014. Brian has been practicing law for more than 14 years, since earning his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, and a B.S. degree in Mass Communications from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He’s a member of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law section of the Florida Bar. He says the busiest part of his practice might be real estate transactions, as the housing market in this area remains very active. “It has been and still remains more

of a seller’s market,” says Brian. “If the home is priced fairly, we frequently see homes go under contract quickly, with multiple offers. In a seller’s market, we also see an increase in calls regarding ‘For Sale By Owner’ transactions.” He explains that North Tampa Law Group offers the same title services as
a title agency, but a title agency has to refer a buyer or seller to legal counsel if any legal issues arise. With a real estate attorney already involved, Brian and his team simply go to work addressing those issues, and act as your title agency. “It’s a convenience,” he explains. “We cover all the bases, whereas a title

Brian says that because of the Covid-19 pandemic, North Tampa Law Group has changed the way it handles closings, giving clients a variety of choices to allow them to close in the manner that is most comfortable for that client. “We can send a mobile notary to the client, or we’re even offering curbside signings, where the client pulls up in their car, calls us, and we send the notary out to them,” Brian explains. “Clients also can choose to sign in the office, but we space it out and clean the conference room in between groups.” In most transactions, the seller is the party who chooses the title agency, and sellers often use whoever their Realtor recommends. But, people are free to choose, so they can let their Realtor know they would like North Tampa Law Group to handle their closing and title insurance.

Taylor Oliveri, the firm’s title manager, works with clients from start to finish on real estate transactions to ensure that those transactions close without a problem. “Taylor is extremely responsive and very helpful,” says Brian. “Buyers and sellers are calling, they’re anxious and nervous and worried, and she’s great at bringing everybody back down to earth...calming them down.” Taylor says North Tampa Law Group will go the extra mile to make sure your closing goes smoothly. “As a smaller law firm, we have more of a boutique feel, rather than a large corporation,” she says. “We establish a good rapport with our clients and with Realtors, as well.” Many of the clients Taylor works with are those who are selling their homes without a real estate agent. “People want to save money by not hiring a Realtor,” she says, “and they still get top-notch service with us.” Seven Oaks resident Sandy Villeneuve agrees. When she was ready to sell a townhome that she owned as an investment property in The Bay at Cypress Creek (near I-75 off S.R. 56), she says she didn’t want to use a real estate agent. “Nobody knew the property better than I did, so I refused to pay a Realtor

thousands of dollars to sell it for me,” she says. “But, I couldn’t do the legal side of it, so I needed an attorney.” Sandy says she and her husband sat down for a consultation with North Tampa Law Group and were pleasantly surprised at the low cost of hiring the firm. From the first meeting, Sandy says it was a great experience every step of the way. “Brian was absolutely wonderful,” she says. “He and Taylor were so responsive and easy to work with. They made it a very easy transaction.” People looking to sell their property “by owner” can schedule a free phone or in-person consultation with North Tampa Law Group. At that point, Brian and his team go over the steps to the transaction and provide of the all necessary documents, such as a real estate contract, seller disclosure form and homeowners association documents. for the management of your assets and determining how to efficiently distribute the assets to your loved ones when you pass away. People are often most familiar with a Last Will & Testament document, which directs the distribution of assets, but does not avoid the potentially lengthy and expensive court process known as “probate.” North Tampa Law Group also can discuss a “living will” and other options to avoid probate. At a consultation with North Tampa Law Group, all estate planning options are discussed to avoid or minimize any court involvement. While probate might not be the best option for everyone, Brian says there are times when it can be beneficial. In addition to asset distribution, Brian adds that real-life factors — such as long-term health care, guardianship and insurance coverage — also are part of estate planning. “There is really a lot we can help you with,” he explains. “Many clients are relieved to find out it was not as expensive or as difficult as they thought.” Brian says that communicating effectively with clients is an important part of the firm’s success. “I think we do a great job of explaining things in simple terms and allowing the client to proceed at their own pace,” he says, adding that
many people don’t like to think about estate planning. “Addressing the issues is more difficult for some people and it can take a few discussions before they determine how they want to handle their affairs, and that is perfectly fine.” For those who have recently lost someone and find themselves needing assistance in the probate process, Brian is experienced in that area as well. North Tampa Law Group is located at 26852 Tanic Dr., Suite 102. Tyriq Outen Is Chasing An NHL Dream! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com The first time Tyriq Outen skated on ice at the Brandon’s Ice Sports Forum, he was 4 years old and decided immediately he wanted to be a goalie. A few weeks later, during his first lesson, his promising ice hockey career began...with his pads on backwards. “Then, he fell behind the net and got his helmet caught in the net,” recalls his father, Ronnie. “It was a comedy of errors.” That imperfect start, however, soon gave way to success at nearly every level at which “Ty,” as his family calls him, has played since. He went from being entangled in the nets to starring in them, and from being a junior standout to a legitimate NHL draft prospect with a bright future ahead of him. “I feel like this is where I belong,” he says. “I fell in love with it right away.” Tyriq grew up in New Tampa, and attended Turner Bartels Middle School. While his friends played Little League baseball and basketball and soccer at the New Tampa YMCA, Tyriq was part of a small but budding hockey community. He played for one of the best youth hockey teams in Florida, comprised of players from all over the state, but that meant lots of travel. He traveled by plane 2-3 times a month for big tournaments in the northeast and Canada, but mostly spent lots of time in the car with Ronnie driving all over the southeast. Ronnie, the basketball director at the new Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County, understood the lifestyle and demands for a high-caliber youth athlete. A former college basketball player who played professionally overseas, Ronnie understood it was all about exposure and training. When it was time to choose a high school, Ronnie and Tyriq moved to hockey-hotbed Boston and lived in an apartment. “When we were in Boston, he was

Imagine if Hunter’s Green had one, and Arbor Greene and Live Oak had one, if you had 5-6 rinks in this area, think of the pool of talent you’d have to draw from. That’s how it is up there. That’s why the competition was so good.”
First Stop – Foxboro
Tyriq hooked up with the South Shore Kings in Foxboro, MA, and began to take off as a player. He had a 3.08 goals-against average (GAA) and a 90% save percentage in his two seasons. At the age of 17, Tyriq made it onto the coveted NHL Central Scouting list as No. 19 among all North American goalie prospects. His athleticism, Ronnie says, is off the charts — “He can roll out of bed and dunk a basketball,” Ronnie says — and his skating and stick skills are exceptional. Tyriq’s vision and game management also continue to improve.
Once a growth spurt got him to 6-feet, 3-inches tall, it completed the package, making him an enticing prospect at a position where taller, athletic goaltenders — like the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Andre Vasilevskiy, who also is 6’3” — seem to be the future. In Boston, NHL scouts were watching every game. “It definitely got the heart pumping,” Tyriq says. Although Ronnie had spent most of his life playing and coaching basketball, he had married Heather, a native Canadian, who came from a family of goalies. Tyriq was born in Miramichi, New Brunswick, where his grandfather Hugh Moar — Tyriq called him Grampy — was in the town’s Hall of Fame and his uncles were accomplished junior goaltenders. Ronnie jokes that basketball never had a chance. Which, he adds, was fine by him. “It wasn’t a disappointment at all,” he says. “I didn’t want him growing up with anyone comparing him to me or anything like that. I was just happy that
every time he came off the ice, whether after practice or a game, he had a smile, and five minutes into the drive home, he wanted to talk about the game.”
Dealing With Adversity
After graduating high school in Boston, Tyriq had to choose between pursuing a Division I college career, or signing with a major junior hockey team, which would end his amateur status. With a chance to sign with the AcadieBathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), the former team of NHL stars like Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Roberto Luongo, and just an hour north from his birthplace — where his goalkeeping family had built a following — how could he resist? It turned out to be the first speed bump in Tyriq’s career. The QMJHL is one of three major junior ice hockey leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League, along with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL). Acadie-Bathurst had loaded up the previous season to win the QMJHL President’s Cup, and they also captured the Memorial Cup against the winners from the OHL and WHL. Tyriq says many of the players acquired to win the title in 2017-18 departed after

that season. His new team won just eight games in 2018-19, and he finished with an 0-20 record, a 5.89 goals against average and faced nearly 1,000 shots in only 1,364 minutes. After a coaching change, Tyriq was released. “The fact that it was (so close to Miramichi) made it even worse,” Ronnie says. “The whole town was, ‘Hurrah hurrah, the hometown boy is coming’ — everybody was happy for that to happen. So, it made it double the monkey on his back.” Ronnie worried about how Tyriq would handle his first-ever adversity. “I would be lying and he wouldn’t be human if I said it didn’t get him down.” Ronnie says he reached out to Tampa Bay Lightning goalkeeping coach Frantz Jean for some guidance, concerned his son might retire his pads. Jean, however, reassured Ronnie that Tyriq was still highly regarded, and that NHL scouts would be watching to see how he reacted to his first adversity. “The ones that are successful come out the other side stronger,” Ronnie remembers being told.
Getting Back In The Pads
Tyriq got back to work. Determined to come back even stronger, rather than give up, he doubled down on his efforts. When he was tired, he thought about Bathurst. When he didn’t want to work out, he thought about Bathurst.

Tyriq was the only goalie invited to play for an all-minority team — NextGen AAA Foundation, a nonprofit that offers mentoring to hockey programs in underserved communities. NextGen, which is coached by NHL players Bryce Salvador and Mike Grier, steamrolled the competition at the annual Beantown Classic in Boston, and went undefeated to win the title. Tyriq was 4-0, and even added five assists — a shockingly high number for a goalie but a tribute to his stick skills — and was named the tournament’s MVP. “That was a big deal for me,” Tyriq says. “I feel like I’m ready to do bigger things. It was a great experience.” Tyriq can’t return to Canada right now due to Covid, but was approached by a Calgary Flames scout at the Beantown Classic, who hooked him up the Maine Nordiques of the North American Hockey League. He left New Tampa last month to begin training, and the Nordiques’ season began Oct. 20. “He was in a bad situation before, but he’s recalibrated now,” Ronnie says. “This is a good situation for him. It’s going to be a good year. He is totally happy — you can hear it in his voice. And, that’s the best thing.”

Grand Opening Sticks The Landing By JOHN C. COTEY When it comes to pomp and circumstance, Pascal Collard spared little expense for the Grand Opening last week of the Sarah Vande Berg (SVB) Tennis & Wellness Center in Zephyrhills. Collard, a Wesley Chapel resident and the CEO of the facility, danced around excitedly as four skydivers made their landings at SVB, the last skydiver bringing along Pascal Collard a large U.S. flag to kick off the national anthem. Tennis legend Nick Bollettieri gave a short speech, along with a number of other local dignitaries, and Hope Kennedy, the CEO of the North Tampa Bay Chamber, spoke for many in attendance when she declared the SVB event “the best grand opening ever.” Collard, an avid skydiver himself who joked that his wife had banned him from jumping from planes for

Brrrring On The Cold?!? Another facility opening soon that is not quite as short a drive from Wesley Chapel as the SVB center, but probably worth the 20-25-minute trip for many locals is the new Snowcat Ridge Alpine Snow Park in Dade City. Located at 27839 St. Joe Rd., Snowcat Ridge will officially open on Friday, November 20. The park is seasonal and will only be open through March. Tickets are already on sale at SnowCatRidge.com (you also can sign up there to get on an email notification list), and the prices range from $24.95 to $39.95, depending upon which days you choose to go. All tickets are $5 more if you buy them at the box office. A general admission ticket includes a two-hour snow tubing session on Snowy Slopes, a 60-foot-high hill that is 400 feet long. It also includes all-day access to the 10,000-sq.-ft. Arctic Igloo, which will have plenty of man-made snow for making snowmen and forts, as well as a bunny slope designed for children ages 3 and under; and Alpine Village, which will feature vendors, seating and food and drink.

Big Results All That Matter For Diaz
WILDCATS STAY ALIVE!
Undefeated Weeki Wachee (17-0) cooled off the Wesley Chapel High (WCH) volleyball team in the District finals by snapping the Wildcats’ schoolrecord 10-match winning streak. The Hornets took the Class 4A-6 championship after dropping the first set 26-24 and then rolling to 25-22, 25-23 and 25-18 wins in the last three sets. WCH (16-5) however, advanced to the state playoffs as the runner-up, and traveled to Crystal River, which is only 6-9, for a match on Oct. 23, after we went to press. In all likelihood, the Wildcats will get a second round rematch with Weeki Wachee on Oct. 27. Weeki Wachee ended the season of Cypress Creek High in the semifinals with a 3-0 win. The Coyotes finished the season with a 7-5 mark. Wiregrass Ranch High couldn’t get past Sunlake in the Class 6A-5 District semifinals, losing 3-1 on Oct. 14. The Bulls finished the 2020 season with a 9-10 record. Senior Zoi Evans, the Bulls’ 6’-4” middle blocker pictured above, had 13 kills and six blocks in the finale. Evans will play for the University of Arkansas next season.

COYOTES FINISH SEASON STRONG
The Cypress Creek High (CCH) boys golf team nearly pulled off a Class 2A-8 District title, falling just a handful of shots short of Lake Wales but advancing to the Regional round of the State playoffs. Freshman Connor Newbold and junior Danny Polce led the Coyotes like they have all season. Polce was third at the District meet at Sandpiper Golf & Country Club in Lakeland, shooting a 3-over 74,
while Newbold shot a 75. Lake Wales finished with a team score of 317; Cypress Creek shot 322. The top three teams all advance to the State tourney. “We knew we were going in to contend for the top spot,” says firstyear coach Matt Schaeffer. Wesley Chapel senior Chase Hanson shot an 83 at the tournament, earning a spot as an individual at Regionals as well.

Covid-19 wreaked havoc on the high school sports schedule this fall, but there is a silver lining for area football teams: They all get to go to the playoffs. Because District and Regional play could not be uniformly scheduled this season because some schools chose not to play or played abbreviated schedules, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) basically threw every team into a hat and pulled out names to fill the playoff brackets in each classification. That means Wiregrass Ranch will be making its fifth straight postseason appearance and Cypress Creek will be making its second straight. Wesley Chapel gets its first playoff spot since 2004. All first round games will be played Friday, November 13, starting at 7:30 p.m. For the first time ever, the Wesley Chapel area will get to host to two football playoff games on the same night. The Bulls host East River out of Orlando in a Class 7A game and, in Class 5A, the Wildcats will host Tampa Chamberlain. In Class 4A, the Coyotes travel to Tampa Catholic. @NTWCNews

Pasta di Guy — Fast, Casual Italian With Homemade Pasta! By GARY NAGER For anyone who has ever had freshly made pasta, you know there’s literally nothing quite like it. Most Italian places in our area use the same hard, dry pasta that you buy in the grocery store and while there’s nothing “wrong” with it, if you want to taste the difference between fresh, homemade pasta and what most everyone else serves, you now have that opportunity right here in Wesley Chapel. Pasta di Guy, which opened a few months ago in the space formerly occupied by the second location of OTB Café on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just south of S.R. 54, has just what you’re looking for. It is owned by Guy Carmeli, who received his formal training at the London location of the famed Le Cordon Bleu cooking school. Guy says he first learned about fresh pasta, however, while working as a sous chef at an excellent Italian restaurant located in his native Israel (outside of Tel Aviv). And, even though Cordon Bleu is most famous for French cuisine, Guy says “They actually teach every style of cooking there and they’re very strict. They tell you when you start there that you’re not a chef and probably won’t ever make it.” Even so, Guy excelled — especially at creating sauces — and after working at a number of restaurants for several years in England, he moved to the Tampa Bay area less than two years ago and started the Pasta di Guy food truck, which soon developed

an almost cult-like local following. A few weeks before starting his food truck, Guy met his girlfriend Emily Murphy, who has been with him ever since and the two started looking for a location for a brick-and-mortar restaurant. “The food truck did great,” he says, “but the kitchen, of course, was very small, so what we could offer was very limited. Emily and I knew that we could do more.” So, when they found out the former OTB location was available, they acted quickly, signed a lease and started designing the fast-casual Italian restaurant. “We literally re-designed everything, especially in the kitchen, from the floors to the equipment,” he says. “We ordered a lot of the equipment from Italy and had
to waita while for some of it.” One of those pieces of new equipment was the amazing pasta machine shown on this page, which made Guy happy, even though having it created a lot more work for him and Emily. “We are here every morning, making the pasta for the day,” says Emily, who says that currently, the strozzapreti (which literally means “Priest chokers” in Italian, but are a longer, form of twisted cavatelli pasta and comes out naturally “al denté”) is the only pasta that is made in-house (the penne, although a delicious imported Italian brand, isn’t made at the restaurant). “And the sauces, too,” Guy adds. “We have to get in early to make all of the sauces for the day, too.”

Among those homemade sauces are the Alfredo (which Guy says is his top-seller), the Bolognese (which carries an up-charge; more on that below), traditional marinara, vodka (Alfredo and marinara mixed together), creamy pesto, aglio e olio (garlic & oil) and butter sauce. Guy says that after Alfredo, Bolognese is probably the #2 seller, but marinara, vodka and pesto are all close behind.

And, Don’t Forget...
Although Guy says he still plans to expand the menu (and perhaps open additional locations), Pasta di Guy also offers a great fried ravioli appetizer in marinara ($8.50), crunchy breadedand-fried zucchini sticks ($6.50) and either two 6” bread sticks ($1.50) or a bread sticks bundle ($5.50), all served How To Order with a side of marinara dipping sauce. The fresh basil is literally grown And, save room for dessert because Guy offers two decadent options — cannolis filled with house-made cheesecake cream in crispy shells and an authentic raspberry panna cotta (Italian for “cooked cream”), which is sweetened cream thickened with gelatin and topped with a smooth raspberry glaze. Guy conducted an informal survey on Facebook and the pana cotta won out over tiramisu as the second dessert option (it was Guy’s favorite anyway). OUR 5 FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THE NEW FLORIDA AVENUE BREWING CO.!
By Gary Nager
Pick Of The Week: Your CBD Store Wesley Chapel! We were on hand last year when (photo) Lisa Feigel (left) and her daughter Ashley opened Your CBD Store in the Freedom Plaza at 30044 S.R. 54, but I honestly didn’t know what CBD was or what it could do for you. Well, a year later, Lisa and Ashley hosted a one-year anniversary event on Oct. 7 and although I didn’t get to attend it personally, I certainly am now well acquainted with Cannabidiol (CBD, which also is derived from the cannabis plant but does not have any of the psychoactive effects of THC, which is what gives users the “high” from marijuana) and what it does, as I have found that Your CBD Store’s topical CBD cream is the only thing that has helped my aching knees, other than arthroscopic surgery or cortisone shots. Your CBD Store has many other awardwinning CBD-based products — including oil tinctures, edibles, raw hemp, beauty products, gel capsules, vapes and more — some of which are treats to help your pet — and they do offer some free samples for new visitors. For more info, call (813) 536-0119 or see the ad on pg. 25 of this issue for some great money-saving coupons!
If you haven’t yet stopped by the new Florida Avenue Brewing Co. (Florida Ave.), located at 2029 Arrowgrass Dr., in the former Sports + Field location on S.R. 56, you’ve been missing a treat — and, from the crowds seen there to date, you may be one of the few locals who hasn’t already given it a try. This nearly 30,000-sq.-ft., two-story building — which was purchased by the Derby family last year, after being vacated back in 2015 — has been completely renovated and re-opened as an outstanding sports bar-style restaurant with somewhat more upscale food. And, although co-owner Anthony Derby says the S.R. 56 location will one day be home to the largest craft brewery in Florida, the beers, ales, hard ciders and seltzers being sold at Wesley Chapel’s Florida Ave. are currently being brewed at the Derbys’ smaller Seminole Heights location and shipped here. And, even though yours truly isn’t much of a beer drinker and isn’t interested in playing corn hole, here are our five favorite things so far about Florida Ave. 5) Seminole Heights’ Cool Makes Its Way To “The Chap” — For everyone who’s tired of eating at chain restaurants along S.R. 56, there truly is nothing quite like Florida Ave. There certainly is nothing else here that has this newcomer’s “vibe.” 4) The Covered Outdoor Seating Area — Although there are lots of local eateries that have outdoor seating, very few have any covered areas at all, but Florida Ave.’s is covered, has a few TVs
outside and access to an open area with corn hole games. 3) Private, Indoor Areas For Parties & Events — Florida Ave.’s 20,000-sq.-ft. first floor not only has a sizable indoor bar and dining area, it also has arcade games (below) and some separate indoor “tasting rooms” where you can host your own private parties. 2) The Variety Of Brews, Plus Premium Liquor — Above left is a “flight” of Florida Ave.’s variety of brews and although anyone who knows me knows that I’m a whiskey drinker, I actually loved two of the brews shown (yes, they were only the simple Florida Ave. Lager & Brown Ale, shown 2nd & 3rd from the right, but still) and I also enjoyed a hard cider and seltzer, but don’t tell anyone. Jannah even liked the Raspberry Berliner Weisse (far left). 1) THE FOOD! — I haven’t yet sampled the entire menu, but I’ve already loved the spicy, Korean-style bibimbap bowl topped with a fried egg, the cheeseburger, the Burrata flatbread, the crab cake appetizer and the classic Caesar topped with grilled chicken. My favorite so far, however, was the Chinese sticky ribs appetizer shown above right, which offers four fall-off-the-bone black bean miso pork ribs with a hoisin BBQ glaze over kimchi slaw with sesame seeds and scallions. I also can’t wait to try the cheesesteak egg rolls (which looked amazing when they brought them to us by mistake), the hanger steak and several others. For more info, call (813) 452-6333 or visit FloridaAveBrewing.com & please tell the Derbys I sent you!
