Roads, Roads and More Roads! S.R. 54 is being widened, SR. 56 is being extended, and the intersection of I-75 and S.R. 56 is being fixed with a futuristic diverging diamond interchange, or DDI. All at the same time. It’s part of an expensive game of catch-up for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as it tries, mostly in vain, to accomplish the impossible task of keeping up with Wesley Chapel’s rapid and no-end-in-sight development with $134.7-million worth of road projects. Roughly a dozen officials from FDOT held a public information meeting Feb. 26 at Pasco Hernando State College (PHSC)’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch to provide an update on its progress with videos, large poster board layouts of the projects and even Matchbox cars to show how the flow of traffic will work in the DDI.
“The area is changing quicker than the roadway network is, as you can see,” says FDOT spokesperson John McShaffrey. “We’re just doing these projects to manage the traffic that we already have. It’s obviously going to help, but the area is going to keep growing, too. These projects won’t be the end of work in this part of Pasco County at all.” The $33-million diverging diamond, considered the (pardon the pun) gem of the three projects, is what Florida Department of Transportation officials used matchbox cars to dem- Wesley Chapel retirees Dan and Judy Whaley showed See “Roads” on page 6. onstrate how the diverging diamond interchange at I-75/S.R 56 will work.
Women’s Hockey Legend To Christen New Museum Tomorrow Margaret “Digit” Murphy was strolling through the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, one day, and asked one of the employees if there were any exhibits about some of the women — either executives, referees or television announcers — that had left their mark on the game. “Follow me,” the employee said, and proceeded to take Murphy on a fruitless tour. Apologizing, the employee simply said, “Well, it used to be here.” Murphy thought for the richest sports league in the world, pro football’s $100-million Hall of Fame would at least have something dedicated to women. But, she wasn’t really that surprised it didn’t. “We can’t tell our story anywhere,” sighed Murphy. But, that sparked an idea. Along with Wesley Chapel’s Jeff Novotny, Murphy has hatched an idea to bring those kind of stories, in this case,

Don’t Forget To Get On The Guest List For My ‘25 Years Of Neighborhood News’ Party! An editorial by Gary Nager So, even though I’ve also had a lot of haters over the 25 years I have owned and been the editor of the New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News, the fact is that I get the most amazing feedback from all of you — our readers — about what we do to bring our communities together. A case in point is our now-finalized plan to celebrate my 25 years at the helm of the primary news and information source for New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents and businesses. Even though we didn’t yet know when the celebration would be held when I announced it in our last issue, we’ve now had more than 120 people register to be part of that celebration — and another 30-40 of our advertising business owners who say they plan to attend. So, let’s see how many of you will register to be on our guest list now that we are officially announcing the details of that little shindig. Although my 25-year anniversary with the Neighborhood News was actually February 25 of this year, the celebration will be held on Friday, April 12, at the awesome Bayscape Bistro at Heritage Isles Country Club (off Cross Creek Blvd.), with heavy hors d’oeuvres being put out at around 6 p.m. and karaoke with my friend Gary Carmichael of Heart & Soul Karaoke kicking the musical festivities into high gear by 7 p.m. The food will be outstanding, as Bayscape owners Eddie and Lourdes Bujarski (who ran the culinary arts program at New Tampa’s Wharton High for nearly two decades) will put out everything from fruit and cheese to some of Bayscape’s Friday Fiesta fare like tacos, fajitas and more. We’re still working on an exact menu (and Bayscape’s complete menu will still be available for purchase) and the bar will be a cash bar, but this is a unique opportunity to hang out with not only my amazing staff at

absence by getting nearly 40 restaurant and beverage purveyors to take part in this year’s event (see wrap-up section on pages 37-39), and I was still sorry Jannah and I weren’t able to be there, even though we had a really, really good excuse. After checking out the pics from this year’s event, here are the main course restaurants that I was the sorriest that I missed:
• The coconut shrimp (which I couldn’t eat, but still) & jerk chicken pasta from Bahama Breeze • The ahi tuna poke spoons and herb-cheeseand-dates endive bites from the Hilton Garden Inn (photo above by Charmaine George) • Noble Crust’s fried chicken & waffles • The meatballs, tacos and shrimp cups (so sad I’m allergic) from Cinebistro • The Shepherd’s pie, mac & cheese and
bangers & mash cups from O’Brien’s • The unique hors d’oeuvres served by Vom Fass, which I didn’t even know had food. The desserts again looked amazing this year, led by the following: • The homemade ice cream from the Ice Dreammm Shop on S.R. 54 in Lutz • The strawberry cake from the new Canterbury Hall Catering at Grace Episcopal Church • Batter & Dough’s dessert waffle cups. I also was sad to miss out on the rum cocktails from Blue Chair Rum, the variety of items from A Dash of Salt & Pepper, the awesome ice cream from Snowrolls and frozen custard from Culver’s and to sample the pastries from Walkabout Australian Bakery, although Jannah and I did have Taste repeat winner Nothing Bundt Cakes provide our unique wedding cake (see pages 4-5).

So, This Happened...
In case you were wondering why I wasn’t at — or even involved with, other than putting together last issue’s preview section — this year’s Taste of New Tampa, it was because Taste 2019, which was originally scheduled to be held on March 17 (aka St. Patrick’s Day) was rescheduled for March 24, which just happened to be the day I married my long-time fiancée Jannah McDonald (now Nager; see pages 40-41 for a wedding recap). The problem was twofold — we scheduled our wedding day at the beautiful St. Pete Beach Community Center on Boca Ciega Dr. at the Intercoastal Waterway before anyone mentioned to me that the Taste had been rescheduled for the same day. Sadly, I found out about the new date for the Taste at the November Business Breakfast for the North Tapa Bay Chamber, three weeks after Jannah and I picked the only date available at our chosen locale between Valentine’s Day and sometime in June, which sounded like a 100-degree day and/or a possible hurricane to us. So, even if we had known about the date change for the Taste, I probably still would have decided to back away from it, which meant this was only the second Taste I’ve missed in the event’s 23-year history. I will say that Taste co-chairs Karen Frashier and Jennifer Cofini and their 20-person committee from the New Tampa (breakfast) Rotary Club still did a great job in my

Wesley Chapel’s Best Big Bro By LIBBY BALDWIN
All that Howie Taylor says he wanted for his fifth birthday was a toy truck. Instead, he got a baby brother. Howie, now 52, and his brother Chris were inseparable. They grew up in Kansas City, MO; closer to each other than to any of their other siblings because of that shared birthday. They stayed close even as they settled in different places — Chris in Nebraska, and Howie with his wife Karen in Wesley Chapel, with whom he has two adult daughters. Howie has been a Wesley Chapel resident for the past 20 years. In 2014, Chris passed away, and Howie sunk into a deep depression. Just a year later, his youngest daughter moved out, widening the sudden empty space in Howie’s life. All that changed in 2016, when Howie walked into a Dairy Queen and left with a flyer that would bring him a new little brother. The flyer was for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. It led to a connection with a 12-year-old Howie Taylor and his “little brother” Hunter have enjoyed many adventures together, including this recent visit to Busch Gardens Tampa. The two were named the Big Land O’Lakes boy named Hunter, that turned into more than either expected — Howie and Brother & Little Brother of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay.
Hunter were recently named the Big Brother and Little Brother of the Year by the Tampa Bay chapter of the nonprofit organization, and have a shot at the national prize, which will be announced later this year. “It’s kind of a whirlwind right now,” said Howie, who was asked to travel to Tallahassee and speak to legislators about the importance of mentoring. “We’ve got 500 kids sitting out there like Hunter was, just waiting on somebody to step up and offer a few hours of their time.”
Filling Needs
The loss of Chris, combined with his daughter’s moving out, left a noticeable void in Howie’s world. “The house just seemed so much bigger,” says Howie, a web developer. Hoping for a sense of normalcy and a way to fill his time in a positive way, Howie began seeking out volunteering opportunities. Even before his brother’s death, Howie was no stranger to giving back. He helped found the Gasparilla Krewe of Blackbeard’s Revenge, which has raised nearly $300,000 for local charities since its inception in 2011.

He also worked with the YMCA, Metropolitan Ministries and other organizations before he walked into that Dairy Queen. Hunter says he was looking for something, too. “I was spending all my time in my room, playing video games,” says Hunter, who is now 15 and plays multiple percussion instruments in the band at Land O’Lakes High School. “My mom told me I should probably go out and do stuff!”
You Have To Start Somewhere
Soon after discovering that flyer, Howie was sitting in a Land O’Lakes kitchen with Hunter and his family, getting to know his new best friend. When Howie and Hunter first met, Hunter admits he was introverted, unsure of himself and uncomfortable in his own skin. He talked to other online video game players much more than he ever talked to people in real life. “You couldn’t drag more than a few words at a time out of him,” says Fred Tanzer, Hunter’s grandfather. “Before Howie, the willingness on his part to open up just wasn’t there.” Hunter, his older brother and their mother have lived with Fred and his wife, Linda, for the past 12 years. Howie’s father calls him nightly, but their interaction ends there. “Hunter hasn’t had a lot of parental anything from his dad,” says Linda. “Howie has just been a ray of light. He’s 100-percent invested, not 98 or 99 percent.” Adults who volunteer to become Big Brothers or Big Sisters go through a background check and an orientation session, after which matching specialists select a Little Brother or Sister for them. The adults must commit to eight hours a month with their young “siblings.”. “Both my kids are girls,” Howie says. “I never had a little boy to work under the hood of the car, play in the garage or throw a ball around with. I was hoping for someone not too rambunctious, but I just wanted to help.” Back in 2016, Howie wanted to expose Hunter to the world outside his

room, but not overwhelm him on their first excursion. He thought about his hobby of flying drones and realized it was the perfect compromise. “We talked about how the dexterity you learn from video games can be good for a lot of things,” Howie says. “Within a few minutes, I handed him the controls and he had the thing out there dancing for me. He was a natural.” Since that first meeting, the pair have shared a bevy of experiences that Hunter believes he never would have done otherwise, including offshore fishing, regular trips to Busch Gardens, charity walks and other volunteer events, car shows and even appearing together on Howie’s Gasparilla Krewe float the last three years. “One of my favorite memories was watching him dance and sing at a Pentatonix concert,” says Howie. “I remember him asking if it was okay to do that, because it was his first concert.” Hunter still talks about their offshore fishing trip; they caught black sea bass and sheepshead, and had a fish fry surrounded by new friends. One of Howie’s Krewe connections hooked Hunter and two friends from school up with a recent trip to Monster

Jam in a limousine. “We see each other at least three or four times more than the minimum eight hours a month,” said Howie. “I’ve probably seen him three times just this week, and I hope to see him regularly for the rest of my life.” Hunter’s grandparents consider Howie to be part of their family, which is Jewish. Although Howie isn’t Jewish himself, he has come up with small gifts for Hunter and attended Hanukkah
festivities every year at their home. “Whenever the school band has a concert, Howie and Karen are there,” Linda says. “Birthdays, he’s always at the parties. We feel very blessed that Howie came into his life — and ours.” Hunter, who says he hopes to turn his gaming talent into a YouTube channel, said he has grown up during his time with Howie, particularly while volunteering, and realizes just how fortunate he is. “I have a lot more than most people, and I’ve learned to respect others and be confident,” he says. Howie adds that his friendship with Hunter has helped fill the voids in his own life left by his brother’s passing and his “empty nest” more than he ever imagined it would. “I’ve always got someone to hang out with,” Howie says. “I heard it said once that when your grown-up kids call you out of the blue, it’s like winning the lottery. I feel the same way when I get a call from Hunter after a long day at work.” Howie hopes that those considering becoming a Big Brother or Sister will reach out to the organization and join. “Anybody can do it, and it doesn’t take a lot of time or money,” he says. “It just takes interest, and a little bit of that can make such a huge difference.” For more information, visit BBBSTampaBay.org, or call (813) 769-3600.

ROADS: FDOT playing catch up with Wesley Chapel’s growth FROM PAGE 1
up to see. Dan says they left with a better understanding of how it will work. “Once you look at it closely, it makes sense,” he said. The Whaleys say the DDI, which will help ease congestion from C.R. 54 west of I-75 to Cypress Ridge Blvd. to the east of I-75, is much needed. The thought of driving along S.R. 56 on either side of the interstate is rarely one they entertain, which means fewer trips to the plethora of retail stores and restaurants in the area. “Only when we have to,” Dan said. The DDI, scheduled for completion in late 2021, will create more continuous green time through the intersection for traffic, and is expected to clear up one of the hot spots for backed up traffic in Wesley Chapel – the northbound exit ramp off I-75. “It will clear that queue and reduce it down hugely, so you won’t see that two-mile back up anymore,” says Ryan Forrestel, PE of American Consulting Professionals, LLC.
Extending S.R. 56
At the other (eastern) end of S.R. 56, a much-simpler six-mile extension is being constructed from Meadow Pointe Blvd. to U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills. That project is taking place over undeveloped land, and doesn’t have to worry about working around traffic, businesses or homes. However, it has had its own issues, as damage from Hur-

The proposed bypass would have relieved traffic on S.R. 54, but those plans were placed on hold in favor of getting S.R. 56 built. “It will eventually connect to Eiland Blvd.,” Frank says. “The developer or county will develop it. In the meantime, something has to happen out there and that is what this job does.” S.R. 54 will go from its current two lanes to four lanes, with intermittent dedicated turn lanes, as well as a number of safety improvements, such as limiting left turns out of side streets like Foxwood Blvd., which has been the site of numerous accidents. Frank says the $42.5-million project will prove to be a lot more than just widening of a 4.5-mile stretch of road. “We are moving every single utility that’s out there, too,” he said. “Power, water, sewer, fiber optics and your communication lines. It’s not like we can just come out there and lay pipe and we’re done. It’s almost more of a reconstruction project than it is a widening. It’s a brand new road.” Frank says it should be completed in the spring of 2021.

Meadow Pointe Mom Gets The Golden Ticket At Earth Fare’s Opening! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneightborhoodnews.com Waiting in a long line in the wee hours of the morning with her five children wasn’t on Jessica Herbert’s to-do list on Feb. 19. Checking out the grand opening of the new Earth Fare grocery store, however, was. Instead of lining up in the dark, which more than 100 eager shoppers did, she and her children rolled out of bed at their usual time — around 6 a.m. — and left their Meadow Pointe home at 6:45 a.m. They missed the band, the cheerleaders and the ribbon cutting. They weren’t the first, 10th or 100th people through the doors. However, for Jessica and her kids, their timing turned out to be impeccable. Of all of the gift cards handed out to the new store’s first 500 visitors by Earth Fare, Jessica got the most valuable one: $1,000. Jessica’s mouth dropped wide open, then formed into a wide smile as she looked back incredulously at friends who were in what was, by then, a quickly moving line. “Yes, really,” she said, holding out the card for them to see. “Wow!” Her smile was contagious and was shared by her excited kids: Addison, 12, Kate, 10, Clay, 8, Jackson, 5 and 3-yearold Brooke. “My kids were mad that I dragged them out so early,” Jessica said. “They thought we were only going to get a $5 gift card.” Grabbing a $5 gift card actually was Jessica’s goal. She confesses to briefly thinking about the possibility of landing the big prize, but of course, she didn’t think it would happen. “My goal was to get at least $5 to buy my kids some muffins for breakfast,” she said. Feeding five kids an organic diet can be pricey, so the gift card will come in handy for Jessica. “With five kids, that’s definitely a lot of food that we need, so we could definitely use this,” she says. “It’s nice to know that now, we can buy heathier

ingredients for our family.” Asked whether the kids would be getting a special treat for bringing a little luck to mom, Jessica chuckled and said, “I think we’re going to get something,” as Addison and Kate grabbed onto her to drag her into the store.
She’s Number One!
Velaina Clayart wasn’t quite as lucky — her gift card was for only $25 — but as the first shopper in line, she received lots of attention and a goody bag from the store, which she promptly shared with those in line behind her. A Dade City resident, Clayart says that she arrived at around 1 a.m., set up her white plastic chair and quilt and killed time by gazing at the full moon and walking around looking at all of the adjacent new construction. “It was a little lonely at first,” she said. “But, as people showed up, I would seek out conversation. I made some friends today.” Why 1 a.m., which turned out to be a few hours before the next people in line? Clayart says that’s what her research told her.
“I watched every single grand opening that Earth Fare had posted on the internet, and one of them over on east coast said two women had gotten there at midnight and they were all by themselves up until about 3 a.m.,” Clayart said. “I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited. I got in my car at midnight and made my way here nice and slow.” Clayart also said that she is fascinated by all of the growth in Wesley Chapel, and wanted to be part of a grand opening. She also says she lives an organic lifestyle, and is pleased to see a store offering such a large variety of healthy products within a short drive from her home. And, she enthusiastically clapped and sang along with the cheerleaders from Cypress Creek High School, excitedly talked to passers by, cheered when Earth Fare CEO Frank Scorpiniti presented the New Tampa Family YMCA with an oversized check for $3,000 and shouted out the ribbon-cutting countdown with Pasco County District 2 Commissioner (and Wesley Chapel resident) Mike Moore. “3…2…1…”

Local Female Veterans Hoping To Grow Their Facebook Group By LIBBY BALDWIN
When someone says the word “veteran,” the image that immediately jumps to mind is usually that of a man, hair turned to gray, with wrinkled skin and slower to move, but carrying themselves with the same pride and dignity they learned — and earned — while serving their country. The image that hardly ever comes to mind? That of a woman. Retired U.S. Air Force veteran and senior master sergeant Phyllis Whetsel believes it’s high time for that to change. Whetsel, who is originally from New York, served 21 years of active duty and retired last June. Her husband, Brook, retired last January after 26 years of his own in the Air Force. The couple met while stationed together at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii and were married in 2012. After a joint retirement ceremony on the USS Missouri, the couple relocated to Wesley Chapel last August, with Whetsel’s mother and three of their four children, ranging in age from five to twenty. Most of the men in Whetsel’s family were service members, including her father, who passed away in 2016. Her eldest son lives in Idaho with his husband; both men are currently serving in the Air Force. “Whenever I’m talking to someone and they ask what brought me here, they assume that when I say I’m retired from the military, I’m actually speaking of my husband,” says Whetsel, 42. “It’s still a mindset that the military (mainly) consists of men.” Wanting to change that mindset while connecting local fellow female veterans, Whetsel created a new Facebook group last month (search “American Women
10
Veterans of Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and Surrounding Areas” on Facebook) that she hopes will bring together members of this unique group, which is bigger than many believe. According to the Washington Post, 20 percent of new recruits in all four branches of the military are women. Nearly 280,000 of those who served in Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn were women, and about 9 percent of the overall U.S. military veteran population, or more than 2 million, are women.
Baby Steps First
Whetsel’s group currently has just nine members, but the page is already very active, with posts about other female veterans, resources for those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), military news and of course, lighthearted memes. “So far, the feedback has been very positive,” says Whetsel proudly. “While we serve alongside men, our military experiences are very different, and that’s what bonds us.” Whetsel expects her group to grow substantially once word gets around, and is hoping to exceed 1,500 members by the end of the year. The only requirements for membership: be a veteran of any United States military branch and of course, be a woman. Whetsel trusts the integrity of her members and does not require proof of service. Whetsel says that although she knows of several groups for female veterans based in the heart of Tampa, hers is the first specifically for the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area. She naturally gravitated toward Facebook because of her familiarity with it. She now works as a Mary Kay consultant.

Air Force veteran Phyllis Whetsel fills her time working as a Mary Kay consultant and running a new Facebook group for female veterans in the Wesley Chapel/New Tampa area.
“This is definitely going to be a positive, uplifting group,” says Whetsel. “Not everything about being a female vet is positive, so I just wanted a place where women can chat, joke around and share their stories.”
Neighborhood News
@NTWCNews
The first group activity Whetsel planned was a gathering at her home on March 1 (the day we went to press with this issue) for coffee. After she gauges the response to that and a few of the group’s other ideas, she’ll move on to larger events in the community, and hopes to grow the group enough to be affiliated with American Women Veterans, a national organization based in Washington, D.C. “I’m looking forward to connecting with my new tribe,” said member Stephanie Jamison, who retired as a master sergeant in August after more than 20 years in the Air Force and moved with her family to the area last June. “It’s tough leaving the military family behind, but I’m thankful for groups like this!”
Neighborhood News
Fellow Air Force veteran Beatriz Cruz, who now lives in Wesley Chapel, echoed Jamison’s sentiments. “This group means meeting other women veterans, and hopefully having the same camaraderie we had in the military,” says Cruz. Whetsel says she is looking forward to adding more members to the group. “I really believe that even though we are no longer in the military,” she says, “we still have so much to contribute — not only to each other, but to the community.” For more information about the group or to join, visit the “American Women Veterans of Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and Surrounding Areas” Phyllis Whetsel and her husband, Brook, at their joint retirement ceremony in March 2018 aboard the page on Facebook. New Charging Stations Will Add To Area’s EV Drivers’ Choices By JOHN C. COTEY
john@ntneightborhoodnews.com The parking lot between the Panera Bread and Dunkin’ Donuts off Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in the Walk at Highwoods Preserve in New Tampa is undergoing a transformation that should charge some people up. If they have the right kind of car, that is. What is currently a fenced-in site with little hint of what’s to come will soon be an electric car charging station, part of an Electrify America network that is aggressively expanding across the country. The New Tampa location is one of 484 sites that will be finished by the end of June. Tesla, which uses proprietary charging stations, has plans to build a station near the Super Target on County Line Rd. sometime this year, according to its website. Those driving electric cars in Wesley Chapel can find Plug-In America stations at Wesley Chapel Nissan, Honda and Chevrolet, as well as a two stations located at the Tampa Premium Outlets. The New Tampa location under construction will be located in one of that area’s busier breakfast and lunchtime locations, which is exactly what Electrify America is looking for, according to company spokesman Mike Moran. While Moran says the proximity to I-75 is ideal, so is the variety of things to do for those waiting for their car to fully charge. Although the technology continues to improve, to charge an electric car can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours or even overnight, so stations are often located in high-amenity areas and at many hotels.
12
“It’s a combination of many things, really,” Moran says. “But, part of the criteria is that we are looking for places that are accessible and also provide an opportunity to be near other amenities, like shopping, food and beverages and other facilities.” Prices to charge vary from station to station. For example, the stations at TPO charge roughly $5.28 for two hours, according to ChargePoint. com. Most automakers are working on, or are already producing, electric cars, or EVs (for electric vehicles). Sales of EVs in 2018 were up 81 percent over the previous year, with 361,307 sales nationwide, according to InsideEVs.com. Many of the sales are being driven by the price of fueling up with gas, as well as awareness and concern over the effect that fuel emissions have on the environment.
An Electrifying History
Ironically, it was an emissions scandal that led to the creation of Electrify America. A wholly-owned subsidiary of German automaker Volkswagen, Electrify America was created in the aftermath of an emissions scandal in 2015 in which Volkswagen was discovered to have programmed roughly 11 million cars, including 500,000 in the U.S., to activate their emissions controls only during testing. Outside the testing facilities, however, it was discovered that its cars were emitting 40 times more nitrogen oxide than allowed by the Clean Air Act. As part of its settlement with the U.S., Volkswagen agreed to invest $2 billion over 10 years in

major issue with owning an electric car remains the range of your vehicle, and where to power up in a pinch. While the vast majority of EV owners have a charging station at home, one of the byproducts of owning an EV, especially for those with long commutes or looking to make a long trip, is finding a station when you need one, aka “range-anxiety.” But that is slowly changing. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, there were 61,067 electric vehicle charging stations in the U.S. in 2018. That number has increased every year since 2008, with
the fastest growth coming the past three years, with annual growth of roughly 10,000 stations since 2015. There are about 3,000 public charging stations in Florida, compared with more than 20,000 in California, which has the most. The Electrify America station isn’t the first EV charging station in New Tampa. In fact, there are PlugShare charging stations at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites on Galbraith Rd. behind The Walk at Highwoods Preserve shopping center, as well as two PlugShare charging stations at the USF Federal Credit Union on BBD.

Olympus Pools Is Growing, And Helping, In The Local Community ask staff questions that will be answered the same day (in most cases). Olympus employees use the app to post blueprints, photographs and more to keep you fully informed, even if you aren’t home. “Our technology and in-house equipment helps us deliver the finished product faster,” James says. “Nobody’s ever sad when the construction is over.” It doesn’t matter whether you’re budgeting for a $30,000 or a $300,000 pool, Olympus uses the same top-quality products. “We use the best filters, best pumps and best salt systems included with every pool,” James says. “Even the most basic design gets the most premium quality money can buy.”
By LIBBY BALDWIN
Olympus Pools owners James and Alexis Staten are getting ready to bring their business closer to the community they’ve been part of for six years. “New Tampa is our home,” says Alexis, who grew up in Coral Springs and has five children ranging between ages 9-15 with James, who was born in New Smyrna Beach. “We’re here for the long term and really take pride in being the main pool builder (in our area), so we want to invest in the area.” Alexis says that more than half of Olympus’ custom-designed pools have been built in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area, including K-Bar Ranch, Meadow Pointe, Grand Hampton and many more, so requiring customers to travel to the current showroom near Tampa International Airport was something the Statens decided to fix. “Plans are in the works for a new facility to open up in Lutz this summer, with a lot more space, so several customers can work with designers at the same time,” says James, who adds that he had worked every job there is in the pool business before opening Olympus. “Now when people are thinking about a new pool, they will be able to get to us in ten minutes or less.” The bigger and better showroom will feature a slew of brand new features, cutting-edge design and of course, the latest technology in pools — something the Statens have always made paramount. “Everything we do is digital,” says
How About These Add-Ons?

Alexis. “We want to do more than just build a pool; we’re providing an experience.” The company uses a 3-D imaging AutoCAD system to bring the customer’s vision of a new pool to life before the Olympus Pools’ construction staff even breaks ground. You can take a 360-degree tour of your pool on a high-definition screen. The technology even allows you to see what the pool
will look like at dusk or at night, and can also give you a close-up view of what it will be like floating through the pool. The Statens’ latest addition to their high-tech arsenal is a smartphone app that keeps customers informed about their pool project 24/7. Users can receive daily updates via the project management app, pay bills and even
But, Olympus Pools doesn’t just build pools to swim in, they specialize in delivering the entire pool experience, along with other customized offerings. Built-in pool bars are a popular choice these days, because they save space that would normally be taken up on the pool deck, and they offer comfort and convenience. Olympus Pools can build something fancy or simple, and are able to accommodate virtually any design you can dream of, so customers and their family and guests can enjoy their food and drink without ever having to leave their pool. And, if you want to keep the party outdoors, Olympus Pools also builds outdoor kitchens to enhance your pool time. From a refrigerator to a grill to a storage space, outdoor kitchens can be the

There are six designers and four project managers on staff, and more than 150 crew members in the field on a daily basis. James, Alexis and their senior employees have more than 200 years of combined experience in a steadily-growing industry. Olympus Pools designed and built just shy of 400 pools in 2018. James says that the family-oriented, team environment in which everyone reaps the benefits of hard work is the key to Olympus’ success. “We feel the most pride and satisfaction when a customer is thrilled with his new pool; that means a lot to us,” says James. “The best people in this industry can go anywhere, so we try to create an environment where we’re supporting our staff and helping them give the best customer service possible.”

Who Should You Call To Untangle The New Tax Laws? Murtha & Murtha, CPAs! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com
Tax season is upon us (“Tax Day” is Monday, April 15), and with the new tax laws that have created more questions than ever before, it might be time to call in some experienced experts. The father-and-son team of Tom Murtha, CPA, and Patrick Murtha of Murtha & Murtha, LLC, is ready to answer that call. Partners and owners of their own firm in the Seven Oaks Professional Park off S.R. 56 (across from Sam’s Club), the Murthas have more than 50 years of combined experience in tax law, and they recently added three more employees, following a merger with another office in Zephyrhills, which is now called Henson & Murtha, CPAs. “It was a good opportunity to grow the business and take our brand and implement that in Zephyrhills,” Patrick says. With the addition of longtime CPA John Henson and three other employees in the Zephyrhills office, anyone signing up with the Murthas now has access to more than 100 years of combined experience in everything from accounting to tax preparations to mergers and acquisitions. “Where we definitely shine with is handling complex issues you don’t see every day,” Patrick says. “Between all of us, we’ve seen everything.”
Patrick Murtha (left) and his father Tom Murtha offer a plethora of accounting services for individuals and businesses from their office in the Seven Oaks Professional Park. (Photo: Gavin Olsen)
The Curious Case Of The Shrinking Tax Return
The current tax season promises to be an interesting one for Murtha & Murtha and other accounting firms, as clients are feeling the effects, good and bad, of last year’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Things like the doubling of the child tax credit, higher standard deductions and new limits on itemized tax breaks could create some thorny issues for those doing
their taxes on their own and those using computer software. So far, Patrick says that some people are finding out that their usual tax refund has been replaced by a new tax bill. While there are still a lot of tax breaks in the new bill, “W-2 employees are finding their withholdings weren’t enough,” Patrick says, “so, when they’re used to getting a tax refund, we have clients who are getting a much smaller tax
refund, and some that actually owe.” How did that happen? Well, when the new tax law went into effect, Patrick says the IRS overestimated the tax savings that your average taxpayer was going to have. In other words, the IRS was less aggressive on the withholding than it should have been. “So, what happened is people got bigger paychecks during the year, but that was in the form of withholding less tax for their tax bill for the end of the year,” Patrick says. The Murthas say they are not completely surprised by this development. They say they started noticing while doing tax returns in 2018, just after the bill passed, that many of their clients said they were receiving bigger paychecks. As anyone on social media can attest, there were many posts from people praising the new tax law because it meant an extra $100 every week or two on their paychecks. One of Patrick’s clients, a married couple, say they have never owed taxes before and usually get a refund of around $3,000. This year, they owe $2,500. On the other hand, says Tom, Murtha & Murtha has another client, a business owner making more than half a million dollars annually, who they saved $30,000-40,000 in taxes. “He made out like a fat rabbit,” Tom says, “and he was able to put the savings into retirement planning.”

While everyone is paying a little less tax, Patrick says the sweet spot this year seems to be those making between $150,000 and $400,000, due to the child credit being doubled and available to those who make up to $400,000, a generous qualified business income (QBI) deduction of 20 percent for business owners and “softer” tax brackets. If using a firm like Murtha & Murtha sounds daunting and exorbitantly-priced, the Murthas promise that it’s not. “Pricewise, were competitive with companies like H&R Block, we really are,” Patrick says. “I have clients who come in and I quote them a price and they say, ‘Wow, I paid $100 more at H&R Block and they messed up my return.’ We are able to provide a high level of service without pricing people out.” That service, provided by Patrick, Tom and the firm’s senior accountant Kyle Flischel, CPA, is what they call the “Murtha & Murtha Difference.” They don’t have someone meet with you, pass off your return to someone different in a back office, and then deliver your results to you without explaining everything and rushing you out the door. At Murtha & Murtha, the person you talk to is the person who does your tax return. Whether you’re a filer from a lower income tax bracket, a business bringing in $100,000 a year or someone with an $80-million stock portfolio, you get personalized treatment. “We want our clients to view us as advisers,” says Patrick, “not just the guys who do their tax returns.” Murtha & Murtha will go over your return, explain how the final result was achieved and offer advice on how to proceed in the future. If you’re unhappy with your refund or lack thereof, they can offer suggestions to avoid a repeat. “We want to make them aware of what the new landscape is and how to deal with it,” Patrick says. “Retail companies train employees how to use the software, they don’t train them on tax law. We’re not just a tax return mill, we want long-term relationships with our clients.”
More Than Just Tax Returns
Murtha & Murtha can and does handle much more than just tax returns. Tom, who earned his B.S. degree in
Management from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY, in 1976, and his M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration) degree in Accounting from St. John’s University in Queens, NY, in 1981, has been doing mergers, acquisitions and business valuations since the 1990s. Along with various accounting services, business valuations are another perk of being a Murtha & Murtha client. A good and accurate estimate of the worth of someone’s business is as important to a business owner as the appraisal of one’s home. Tom specializes in this field, “and not just the back of an envelope type of thing.” In the long run, he adds, everyone wants (or has) to sell his or her business one day. Murtha & Murtha also offers a “CFO Retainer Package,”which is designed to help businesses and those who are self-employed whose company may need a Chief Financial Officer but don’t have the budget to hire a full-time manager or accountant for that job. For a fraction of the cost of a fulltime CFO, the Murthas operate in an advisory position and can handle everything from accounting and book bookkeeping, setting up payroll and ensuring that all the income and expenses are classified correctly. They also will put together a budget, which Patrick says hardly any other companies do but is needed, as it provides a “compass” to let you know if your business is headed in the right direction. And of course, they will take care of all the tax preparation and planning. If you follow Murtha & Murtha on Facebook, you also can find advice in the form of short videos that will help answer a number of common tax questions, from simple ones to those that are more complex. “We offer the complete package,” Tom says. “When you are with us, you really do get a lot.” Murtha & Murtha, LLC, is located at 2236 Ashley Oaks Cir., Suite 101, in Wesley Chapel. Florida Executive Realty Celebrates The Opening Of Its Newly Expanded Office! By GARY NAGER
When I first met Kristy Darragh in 1995, she was a relatively new agent with Florida Executive Realty (FER). Since 1992, or two years before I purchased the Neighborhood News with a former partner, FER has been operating out of what was once called the “Tampa Palms Information Center.” At that time, Kristy bought one 1/8-page ad, sold the one house in the ad and called me to say she was buying a full-page ad with us. She’s been on our back cover of every New Tampa issue ever since. “I’m also going to tell my boss, Doug Loyd, that he should buy a fullpage ad, too,” she said. And, the rest of that story is history. Part of that history is that FER is the real estate office that we named, back in 2000, as our “Advertiser of the Millennium.” Fast forward about a quarter of a century. FER has grown from just that one office and two people — Doug (who actually opened the office with former partner John Zielenbach) and his now-VP/general manager Michelle Weinhold (affectionately called “Red” by many in the office) — to six offices and 200 agents and staff. In addition to helping buyers and sellers of homes, FER today also offers full-service property management, mortgage and title services and even new construction services. I sat down with Doug and Kristy recently to not only write this story, but also to do a WCNT-tv/NeighborhoodNewsOnline.net Video Business Feature about the expansion and tell more about FER and its rich history. The building which is home to FER today — and which, rumor has it, was built in about 30 days — was one of the first two con-
(L.-r.) Neighborhood News’ Gary Nager, with Doug Loyd and Kristy Darragh of Florida Executive Realty
structed in Tampa Palms back in 1986. “This building was here before Tampa Palms Country Club, before Tampa Palms Elementary and definitely before any homes or shopping centers,” Doug says. “They were just starting to build the first subdivisions in Tampa Palms — Ashmont, Coventry and Canterbury.” Through it all, the building has held up pretty well, but FER kept outgrowing it. So, shortly before Kristy bought into FER as Doug’s partner 16 years ago, a second floor was added to the original 3,200-sq.-ft. building, but despite several interior re-dos since then to accommodate the office’s growing staff, Doug and Kristy have been talking about expanding and upgrading it. Well, with Kristy and Doug, talk usually becomes action, and so today, the Tampa Palms office has been expanded by about 1,200 sq. ft. inside, and a beautiful patio and garden area (perfect for special events and even weddings that is dedicated to the memory of former FER Realtor Mark Stern) have been created outside. And, the entire building has received a wi-fi and wiring upgrade. And, while Doug is thrilled to finally
have a legitimate office, Kristy is proudest of the new “virtual agent” office that is adjacent to the new conference room.“Because everything is online today,” she says, agents don’t have to work 9-to-5 anymore. So, we created a space where agents from all six of our offices can stop in, plug in and then get going again.” Doug adds, “It’s hard to believe we’ve been in business this long and haven’t had a proper conference room. But maybe, the most popular thing we’ve built is the patio. And, Phase 2 of the expansion will be to redo the rest of the existing office to match this new look.”
Still Truly Local...
Doug says that despite the fact that there are many real estate companies with offices in every U.S. state, “real estate, by definition, is still a truly local business.” Kristy adds, “And, while Tampa Palms is still the mother ship for us, I have listings and have sold homes throughout New Tampa, Wesley Chapel and beyond. Doug has had a vision for this company and it’s working.” Part of Doug’s vision has been to duplicate what he did in Tampa Palms, as
FER’s Westchase and Fishhawk Ranch offices also are in the former community centers/ information offices for those developments. And, all six offices — Tampa Palms, Westchase, Fishhawk, South Tampa, Carrollwood and Brandon — participate in FER’s HOPE Foundation, a Florida 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization established in 2015 (HOPE is an acronym for Housing, Opportunity, People and Education). Doug says, “The HOPE Foundation is our way of giving back to those in need throughout the areas we serve.” There currently are four nonprofit organizations receiving contributions from the Foundation — the Academy Prep Center of Tampa, A Kid’s Place of Tampa Bay in Brandon, Quantum Leap Farm of Odessa and former Tampa Bay Bucs WR Vincent Jackson’s Foundation — Jackson in Action. “With contributions from all six offices, we’ll be donating about $40,000 to those charities (total) this year,” Doug says. “We’re pretty proud of that.” The Foundation also names a “Humanitarian of the Year” every year at FER’s “Awards of Excellence” ceremony. The 2018 Humanitarian of the Year was Sue Dei from FER’s Carrollwood office. The Tampa Palms office of Florida Executive Realty is located at 15802 Amberly Dr. For more information, visit FloridaExectutiveRealty.com or call the office at (813) 972-3430, or Kristy Darragh at (813) 931-6700 And, please visit YouTube.com/ WCNT-tv or search “Neighborhood News” on Facebook to view FER’s Featured Business video segment.

Time To Reduce Your Home’s Clutter? Tailored Living Of Central Tampa Can Help By CELESTE MCLUAGHLIN
Is it time for the annual spring cleaning at your home? If you’re tired of looking at piles of clutter, overcrowded closets, or a pantry or garage that you keep saying you need to clean up, Tailored Living might be the solution. Mat Jones is the franchise owner of Tailored Living of Central Tampa, which serves the Wesley Chapel and New Tampa areas. After spending the last 14 years as the vice president of sales for a software company, he got tired of traveling and bought the Tailored Living franchise in December, building a local business that allows him more time with his family. Mat and his wife Karie, who have been married for 22 years, live in Lexington Oaks with their kids, 10-year-old Ethan and 9-year-old Addison, and their golden doodle named Stella. “We do whole home organization from garages to closets and everything in between,” explains Mat. “We also create custom desks, laundry rooms, Murphy beds, pantries and garage floors.” In addition to creating custom closet cabinets with open or closed shelving and drawers for your home, Tailored Living also offers its services to commercial businesses, such as offices and stores. Mat recently installed a custom organization system in his doctor’s office. To finish the organized, clean look of your garage, Tailored Living offers several

became one of his first clients. “Mat did our daughter’s closet and we’re going to do our master closet as well,” Adriane says. “Getting organized is something people want to do, but people don’t know where to start. He gave us a lot of ideas on how to make life easier.” She says she was pleasantly surprised by how her daughter’s closet organizing system will grow with her. “She’s only 5, so they tailored it to a little girl who wants to dress herself,” explains Adriane. “It’s so versatile. As she gets older, I can move the bars up or move the shelves around, when she’ll have more clothes instead of toys.” Adriane says Mat had really good design ideas, but also took the time to understand her needs and created a design to address those specific concerns. “The consultation was easy,” she says, “then the installation was done in one day.” She was impressed by the 3D concepts presented during the consultation, allowing her to see exactly what her project would look like from many angles. She also learned a lot during the process, such as unexpected add-ons, including different kinds of molding, lighting and glass doors. After they get their master closet organized, the Wonderlins says they plan to tackle their garage. “I come from up north where there are basements and attics,” Adriane says. “Here, there’s no storage, so you have to get creative with the space you have. Bins from Walmart can only do so much.”

Creating more space in your bedroom closet (left), kitchen (center) and/or garage (right) with the use of shelving and taking advantage of wall space can help any home become more organized and less cluttered.
Paying Attention To Details
Mat says he’s building his reputation on details. “We say what we’re going to do, and do what we say,” he explains. “Your reputation is all you have, so we treat every job to the same level of craftsmanship. We pay attention to the details and pride ourselves on the small things.” For example, he explains, his installers don’t just cover over old closet racks with new ones. After removing the old items, they repair the holes, paint the walls and make sure the seams are caulked. “It’s an investment for people to get organized and we want them to know they picked the right company,” Mat says. He also says that all installations are done by the company’s two full-time em-
ployees, not contractors. The lead installer has been a cabinet designer and installer in his family business and also lives in Lexington Oaks. If an extra hand is needed, Mat hinself will jump in. He says his goal is to help people get organized for a more stress-free home and life, helping them to create a space for the piles that inevitably find their way into a home. “When people are running out of space, they know they need to do something,” he explains. “Most people think the solution is to get rid of the things we have. The problem is, you’re going to replace them, and then you’re going to have nowhere to put the new things.” He says the solution is not to be frustrated by the things we have, but to let Tai-
that made sense that we never would have thought of.” The Tumeltys were so happy with the results of their closet reorganization, they then hired Tailored Living to organize their kitchen pantry. After that, they had their garage floor coated. “They were absolutely fantastic and went the extra mile for us,” Bill says, explaining that the precise attention to detail was beyond his expectations. “I believe in oldschool customer service and Mat definitely does give that.” For more information or to schedule a free in-home consultation with Tailored Living of Central Tampa, call (813) 425-0131, visit TailoredLiving. com and enter your ZIP code, or see the ad on page 30 of this issue.
lored Living help you find a way to organize, so you have a place to put those thing away. Bill Tumelty is one of Tailored Living’s satisfied customers. He says his wife had wanted to better organize the walk-in closet of their Wesley Chapel home for a long time. “I’m cheap and I didn’t want to spend the money, but now I couldn’t be happier,” Bill says. He says the closet is pretty big, and now that it’s been fitted with a custom cabinet solution, he actually has a larger section. His wife has a built-in jewelry organizer that she loves, he has a tie and belt rack that slides in and out so it’s not seen, and even the laundry hamper is built in. “The owner, Mat, is so attentive to our needs,” Bill says. “He made suggestions

HERSTORY: Museum’s Grand Opening will feature former hockey stars FROM PAGE 1 to bring the museum, which will be developed by Murphy’s Play It Forward Sport Foundation, to Wesley Chapel. “You want to go to places that embrace you,” Murphy says. “Wesley Chapel has bent over backwards for us.” For Novotny, the museum is a labor of love. He has three daughters, all athletes. His youngest daughter, Madison, spurred his interest in women’s hockey. Madison currently plays prep school hockey at the Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY. He said bringing Murphy’s story and the Herstory Museum to Center Ice is a real boon for girls hockey. “She’s a legend,” he says. “It will inspire girls who read her story.” The room housing Herstory on the second floor of AHCI is only about 100 square feet or so. When visitors walk in, they will immediately see a virtual brick wall where they can purchase a virtual brick, with the money raised going towards running the museum and for a scholarship for a local athlete. There also will be a selfie wall, where visitors can snap self-portraits and post them to social media. The first display will feature Murphy, a former Ivy League Player of the Year at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. She also produced seven Olympians while becoming (at one time) the all-
28
time winningest women’s hockey coach in NCAA Division I history with 318 wins at Brown (she is currently 13th on that list). At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, she became the first American female color analyst for a women’s ice hockey game broadcast on television and, in 2015, along with Aronda Kirby, founded the UWLX, the first professional women’s lacrosse league in the U.S. Murphy and Kirby also founded the Play It Forward Sport Foundation, which is geared towards gender equity in women’s sports.
Honoring The Legends
Others who will have displays at the museum are: • Katey Stone, who today is the winningest women’s coach in NCAA hockey history and the coach of the 2014 women’s silver-medal winning Olympic Team; • Sara DeCosta-Hayes, the goalie on the first U.S. women’s team to win a gold medal at the Olympics (in 1998); • Amanda Pelke, the University of Vermont’s all-time leading scorer and a member of the 2018 U.S. team that trained in Wesley Chapel and won the gold medal in South Korea; and • Kitty Guay, who refereed games in the 2018 Olympics and most recently

became the first woman to referee the famous 67-year-old Beanpot ice hockey tournament in February. “We just want to elevate the conversation and tell stories that don’t get told enough,” Murphy says. “They just disappear, and they shouldn’t. Now, they will be there for the girls and the kids in the community. That’s the only way to advance the conversation and have women’s sports matter.” Each of the featured women will have their own large vinyl display, and visitors can access a QR Code, or send

a text to a certain number, to get more information and videos about each inductee. All of the information will be available online at GetHerStory.org. Another wall in the Herstory Museum will one day feature a local hero, which could be anyone, says Novotny, but will likely be someone with a relationship with hockey. That person hasn’t been selected yet, but Novotny says that, at the grand opening, they will be putting out a call for nominations and hope to choose someone over the next few months. Novotny says the recent success of the U.S. women’s team, and Zimmermann’s commitment to helping advance girls hockey in Florida, makes AHCI the perfect place for Herstory. He and Murphy would like to see the concept of recognizing women in sports scaled for other organizations as well, like the new Wiregrass Indoor Sports Complex — which could do similar mini-museums for volleyball players and gymnasts, as well as for high schools and universities and even corporations. “The whole reason we’re doing this is for little girls to have leaders and role models,” Murphy says. “We want them to see there have been women just like them. If you can see it, you can be it.” For more information, visit GetHerStory.org and PlayItForwardSport.org.

My 2018 Dining Favorites — State Road 56 Eateries Changing Everything! By Gary Nager
1
Even though I know many of you are, like me, tired of mainly chain restaurants opening in our area, the fact is that all of the newcomers continue to expand our dining options in New Tampa and, especially, in Wesley Chapel — and that is good news. Also encouraging is the fact that many of the later newcomers
— and many of the chains already announced as still to come — are eateries that we at least haven’t had in our area before. For example, after my recent visit to Orlando, I am really excited about the Saltgrass Steakhouse (see page 42) that will open, hopefully before 2020, between the Tampa Premium Outlets and I-75, just as I was pretty pumped that both MOD
Dempsey’s Steak House at Saddlebrook
As it has been since it opened, the only problem with Dempsey’s Steak House at Saddlebrook Resort is that the average working guy can’t afford to eat there, other than for a very special occasion. With its $40-$60 steaks and all-a-la-carte pricing, I wouldn’t eat at Dempsey’s at all, other than the fact that everything from the filet mignon to the bone-in ribeye steak (photo below) is as good as anywhere you’ll find in Tampa — including Council Oak, Fleming’s and Charley’s. The fresh seafood is equally impressive and there’s no doubt that the crab cake appetizer and sides for two are unequaled.

Pizza (which opened in 2018) and Blaze Pizza (which opened earlier this year; again, see pages 42-43) coming to our area, even though there will never be anything better than true New York-style pizza at the top of my Favorite Pizza list. But, I am a fan of the new “fast casual” pizza options — and I also like that MOD and Blaze both also have excellent make-your-own salad options. There are some surprises on my list for 2018 and please realize that I got to wait until
2
2019 to make my choices (unlike our readers, who had to submit their surveys by November of last year), but I still have not included any restaurants on this list that were not yet open in 2018. I will say that all of the new chain options did make it more difficult for me to pick just 50 favorite restaurants — I likely considered at least 100 different eateries between our two markets for this list. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed doing the research for it. See pages 32-35 for more of Gary’s favorites!
Stonewood Grill & Tavern
I feel like I’ve known Stonewood’s Tampa Palms proprietor Dave Rathbun forever, but the bottom line is that this mini-chain is known for great food at fair, but certainly not bargain prices, and for outstanding service. Whether for lunch or dinner, dining at Stonewood (or even just enjoying food and beverages at the bar), is an experience, not just a meal. Is it worth $5-$10 more for Stonewood’s aged New York strip or filet mignon than you’d pay at Longhorn or Outback? I’d have to say yes. Recent menu changes, like the southern fried shrimp platter shown below (that I can’t eat because of my accursed shellfish allergy) and reasonably priced bowls (like an excellent tuna poke bowl) for lunch have moved Stonewood up to my favorite restaurant in New Tampa.

Anytime a restaurant I’ve tried before adds new menu items that are in my dining “wheelhouse” — like the addition of truly fresh “short trip” fish (like the mahi-mahi Mediterranean style pictured above) at Grillsmith — I have to give it a try. But, while a lot of places do mahi or grouper, Jannah and I have gotten to enjoy wahoo, cobia and snapper at Grillsmith, which also has the best mashed cauliflower and sautéed spinach in our area. With a little better variety of steaks, Grillsmith could challenge Stonewood for #2.
Bahama Breeze was fast becoming our favorite new restaurant last year when the Island Grille stopped having any “fresh catch” other than swordfish on the menu. We recently got to enjoy a fresh mahi-mahi at Bahama Breeze, and I do really enjoy the Jamaican specialties, but additional steak (top sirloin or filet) and chicken options would help.
Without additional new menu items added in 2018, Little Italy’s dropped a few spots on my list, but it still has the best veal parmigiana and lasagne in our area and their pizzas and calzones are back. A fresh fish special and some veggie sides would be welcome additions.
When Noble Crust opened, I loved that there was usually a fresh fish special and I do still enjoy the double-cut pork chop, chicken fried chicken parmigiana, pizzas and sides like broccolini, garlicky greens and crispy Brussels sprouts, plus the homemade desserts.
Despite another limited menu (unless you really love burgers), Jannah and I do crave the ahi tuna appetizer, chop-chop salad, chicken Henry and petite filet at Ford’s Garage, which also has good veggie side dishes and white cheddar mashed potatoes.
The ambiance is second to none and the food never disappoints. I love Thai Ruby’s fresh fish specials and the crispy duck with ginger sauce is still the best in our area. This is a great place to start an intimate date night.

Liang’s Bistro
Whenever I’ve compiled my list, I try to think of the places that I have visited the most and what I realize is that Jannah and I have spent a lot of time sharing food at the bar at Longhorn. Yes, it’s only a mile from where we live, but we love sharing Longhorn’s Flo’s filet and I feel the outlaw ribeye is a pretty good value. We also love the recent addition of cheesy baked cauliflower (you can get it that way for broccoli, too), as well as the salad, bread and the outstanding service at the bar.
Ciccio Cali continues to please with three yummy tuna “Cali Bowls” on the menu, as well as the chicken and baby broccoli stir-fry, new spicy Brazilian bowl, wrap sandwiches and thin-crust pizzas. Other new menu items include two hummus appetizers, a vegan chopped salad and even the “impossible” burger. Nice wine selection, too.
Acropolis continues to expand its menu with more authentic Greek and Middle Eastern dishes, but my favorites are still the lamb chops, the Athenian fish and the Greek salad. Acropolis would finish higher on my list if I loved the roasted veggies and other side dishes.
Sukhothai’s fresh sushi (especially the tuna tataki) and combination fried rice are still among my favorites in our area and I also love the crispy duck with ginger sauce, the new tuna sashimi poke bowl and the shoes-off, below-floor seating.
Our readers’ new favorite pizza place definitely makes my top 5 for favorite New York-style ‘za, but what really helped the new location move up in my rankings were the authentic linguine with white clam sauce and tasty veal and eggplant parmigiana.
I haven’t always placed Liang’s this high on my list, but I realize that it does feature my favorite New York-style barbecue spare ribs, great egg rolls and the sautéed green beans are among my favorite veggie dishes in the area. We always order them spicy!
Still smoker friendly!

Vegan, Vegetarian, & Gluten Free Options
Kobe already had the highest-quality hibachi steaks in our area, but Jannah and I also love it for its reasonably priced appetizers at the full-liquor bar.
Taco Bus proudly delivers a healthy, fresh authentic Mexican taste experience to our Florida fans. Just one bite of a burrito, tostada or quesadilla and your taste buds will be singing traditional Mexican folk songs.
Still my favorite New York-style pizza in our area and the Italian fare, like veal parmigiana and lasagne, also gets high marks. 25195 State Rd 54, Lutz, FL 33559 • 813-949-4012

If you like getting great value for your money, you’re probably already one of the regulars at Hungry Greek, which features our area’s best gyros and authentic Greek salads.
Another highly-ranked newcomer on my list, I haven’t yet sampled the fresh fish sauté special, but the Fiesta Fridays, wings, burgers and salads are all top-notch.
The menu continues to move towards more authentic Chinese fare, but I love Fushia for the best Chinese combination fried rice and beef with Chinese broccoli in our area.

Our area has more than its fair share of value Japanese restaurants, but Ginza’s Mongolian beef, sushi and appetizers are all-you-can-eat for $12.95 during the week.
Although some say the quality of the food isn’t the highest, Jannah and I can’t get enough of Vallarta’s chicken fajitas, which are better than the rest in our area.
It’s still pretty new, so I haven’t sampled all of the menu for breakfast or dinner yet, but the Pan Asian ribs and NY strip steak are both enough to keep me coming back.
Just a tad below Ginza for my tastes, I do enjoy the fact that the hibachi is cooked tableside and the even-lower-than-Ginza price of $10.95 for weekday lunch.

Why Would Anyone Do Five Straight Days Of Karaoke? Because You Can!?!
By GARY NAGER So, when Jannah and I attended a great Super Bowl party at our friends Torrie and Keith Weinstein’s beautiful motor home at the Quail Run RV Park off Old Pasco Rd. in Wesley Chapel, we had no idea we would end up singing karaoke every night for the next four in “The Chap” (plus a fifth night in New Tampa). How did this come about and why would anyone subject themselves to not just attending five consecutive karaoke nights, but singing every one of those nights? To be honest, none of us are really sure how it all happened, but it started with an innocent comment during the Super Bowl from Torrie that “they have karaoke here tomorrow afternoon. Wanna go?” (Left) The amazing Torrie Weinstein rocked O’Brien’s while (right) a certain editor didn’t butcher George Ezra’s “Budapest” at The Basement. So, Jannah and I made our way back through the private gates of this really nice RV one even suggested it to the management at Quail Run. and I first sang together and I’ve written before about karapark the following afternoon — as karaoke at Quail Run But, when we all realized that we were doing karaoke oke jock Gary Carmichael of Heart & Soul Karaoke and our begins promptly at 6 and ends even more promptly at 9. on a Monday night for the first time, we also recognized awesome crowd of fellow regulars at O’Brien’s, which also Unlike most karaoke locales, which are bars, you can bring that in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel alone, you currently was where we first met Torrie and Keith. your own “liquid courage” to Quail Run, which provides the can sing at an open-to-the-public karaoke bar every Tuesday One of those regulars is our friend Derrell Newell, also karaoke just for its residents and their guests. through Friday. The Bayscape Bistro at Heritage Isles Golf Club on Cross Creek Blvd. (near Morris Bridge Rd.) in New Tampa (see “Gary’s Favorites” on pages 31-35) is more than just one of my favorite new restaurants in our area. Owners Eddie and Lourdes Bujarski, the couple who ran the Culinary Arts program at New Tampa’s Wharton High for nearly two decades, have a great little neighborhood restaurant and bar with a fun crowd of regulars. We also were happy that we convinced our friend Ron, the O’Brien’s regular who first introduced us to Torrie and Keith, to come out to join us at Bayscape Bistro. And, even though neither Torrie nor Jannah agreed to do the same, I decided that I was going to try to make it through the week without repeating even one song, just to challenge myself. And, judging by the 22 tunes on my “set list” (right), I accomplished my goal, even though I have no idea why I would even try it. So, there you have it...our five-day Karaokethon. It was a lot of fun, but would we ever do it again? “Oh hell no,” we all agreed.

Checking Out Saltgrass Steakhouse & Main Event...In Orlando!!
With all of the restaurants and stores that have opened on the north side of S.R. 56 (across from the Tampa Premium Outlets), the eatery coming to our area that I’m now most excited about is the Saltgrass Steakhouse, which recently broke ground on the south side of 56, between the outlet mall and I-75. My son Jared and his wife Mary live in a new section of Orlando — also near a new outlet mall — which is home to many of the same restaurants we have, including Longhorn Steakhouse and others. But, the one that
caught my eye was the sign for Saltgrass Steakhouse, which is the steakhouse chain under the Landry’s Seafood House umbrella. Of all the restaurants in our area, pricewise, Saltgrass is probably closest to Stonewood Grill & Tavern in Tampa Palms (see pg. 31), with most steaks at least $30. But, whether you choose a filet (Jannah and I split the huge 12-oz. version) or Jared’s bone-in ribeye (at least 22 oz.; photo above left), the Angus steaks are truly tender, well-seasoned and delicious. There are fresh veggies galore and the salad, bread and desserts are all top-notch, too. Jared and Mary also live near International
Dr., which is home to a Main Event entertainment center — which also is coming to the same area of S.R. 56 as Saltgrass. The feel is like a big Dave & Buster’s, with video games, a bar and cafe, but with really nice bowling alleys — and the food looked pretty decent, too. Jannah and I will have to go back and visit Main Event for dinner to tell you more about it, but I’m certain it will become yet another major attractor for our area. Also coming to that part of S.R. 56 is Rock & Brews, a scratch kitchen with a rock & roll theme. In addition to a nice-looking menu, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the rock group KISS make appearances at every opening. Fun stuff, for sure.
Blaze Pizza Now Open On S.R. 56!
So, have you decided yet which fast casual pizza place you prefer? Now that Blaze Pizza (photo above right) has opened in the same plaza as Chipotle, a little west of Mellow Mushroom, our area now has two fast-casual pizza places located almost directly across
S.R. 56 from each other. As we told you in a previous issue, MOD Pizza, Blaze’s biggest competitor nationwide, is located in the strip plaza next to Starbucks on the south side of 56. Whichever one you like better, Blaze’s opening means more tasty pizzas and salads, plus really good desserts. For more info about Blaze Pizza, call (813) 907-0097 or visit BlazePizza.com and tell them I sent you!

your wait could be over by the time this issue reaches you. Could is the operative word. The new Rice & Beans is a much larger, more comfortable space than the original (which shared its building with a gas station on S.R. 54 in Lutz but was closed recently), and will serve the same great Puerto Rican-style Latin cuisine, such as the tasty grilled steak sandwich with garlic mayo and fries shown above. The owners promise that the new Rice & Beans should open “very soon.”
The New Las Palmas Is Open!
Speaking of great Latin food, those who have been waiting to find out where and when
everyone’s favorite in New Tampa was going to reopen, Ramses Garcia, the owner/chef of Las Palmas Latin Grill (photos below) says that you should come check him out at his new location, in the same plaza as Five Guys Burgers & Fries off County Line Rd. at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just south of the Pasco County line. Ramses and his wife Ana promise that the new menu includes all of your old favorites from his former location in the Pebble Creek Collection, with even more authentic Cuban recipes to sample. Of course, I had to try Ramses’ mojo roast pork with a crispy edge (below) the day before he opened and I loved the new red beans served with his always moist pork. Please tell Ramses and Ana that Gary at the Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News sent you and how hard you’ve been trying to find out about their new location. The new Las Palmas Latin Grill is located at 6431 County Line Rd., Tampa. For info, call (813) 907-1333 or search Las Palmas Cafe on Facebook. — GN
