West Africa to lose $32.6bn to Ebola –World Bank Ayodele Aminu

he World Bank yesterday warned that if the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) currently ravaging Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone is not contained early enough,

the economic costs to the West African countries may hit $32.6 billion by the end of 2015. The global lender also said it was mobilising $400 million in emergency financing for the three West African countries hardest-

hit by Ebola, which has claimed over 3,439 lives. The World Bank’s new report released yesterday noted that it is far from certain that the epidemic will be fully contained by December 2014. Consequently, it said

that in light of the considerable uncertainty about Ebola’s future trajectory, two alternative scenarios are used to estimate the medium-term (2015) impact of the epidemic, extending to the end of 2015. A “Low Ebola” scenario

corresponds to rapid containment within the three most severely affected countries, while “High Ebola” corresponds to slower containment in the three countries, with broader regional contagion. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

ormer Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, yesterday lamented the

security challenges in the country and advised the Federal Government not to overrule dialogue in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency. He decried the wanton destruction of lives and properties in the North-

Eastern part of the country and the challenge posed by Boko Haram insurgents. Abubakar, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, while inaugurating some projects to mark the fourth anniversary of

the Kayode Fayemi administration, said as a soldier who fought during the Nigerian civil war and as a top player in the return of the country to democracy, he was not pleased with happenings in the country, especially in matters relat-
