Final rebasing puts Nigeria’s economy at N81trn Abdulwahab Isa Abuja

our months after the rebasing of the Nigerian economy, which ranked it ahead of South Africa as the largest economy in Africa, the National Bu-
reau of Statistics (NBS) yesterday rolled out a new figure which put the final rebasing of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in terms of economy growth by expenditure, at N81.009 trillion. Last April’s rebasing,
which put the nation’s GDP at N80 trillion (about $510billion), had catapulted Nigeria’s economy to the 26th biggest in the world and first in Africa. The NBS explained that there were some minor expenditure items not
captured in last April’s report, which necessitated a review of the exercise. In the final report released yesterday, household items expenditure accounted for the largest chunk of the rebased GDP profile; standing at about
N58.138 trillion in 2013, up from the N42.115 trillion in the preceding year. According to the report, expenditure on export goods and services stood at N14.615 trillion as against the N22.824 trillion CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

ivers State has recorded its first case of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) with the death in Port Harcourt of a medical doctor, Iyke Sam Enemuo, throwing residents into panic. The Federal Government and the state government at separate briefings in Abuja and Port Harcourt yesterday said Enemuo, who died on August 22, contracted the disease from one of the first contact of the index case, the late Liberian-American, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, who imported the virus from Liberia to Nigeria.
