If Clemson had defeated Alabama Monday, Jan. 11, to win the national college football title, the reigning NCAA Division I football TAKE and basketball (Duke) champions would have played in the Carrier Dome in the same calendar year (2015).

ORANGE HOOPSTERS’ BAD STRETCH WILL GET TOUGHER

Here’s how it works in the sports world: When you’re a fan of a team and things aren’t going your way, you have to blame somebody. The ref. The coach. The umpire. The schedule. The quarterback. The backup quarterback. The point guard. The goalie. The ref again. You get the idea. For the Syracuse University men’s basketball team, which is 0-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after the 84-73 loss to No. 6 North Carolina at the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Jan. 9, we’re going to try something different on the behalf of all SU fans. We’re going to blame one of the signature moments in Orange history. Since Feb. 12, 2014, SU is a pedestrian 32-26, and that’s with 15 wins against Division I lightweights such as Colgate (twice), Cornell (twice) and Kennesaw State. Worse yet, the Orange is 12-18 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and has lost its last seven conference games, including the first four this season for its first 0-4 conference start since 1996-1997 in the Big East. “This is a tough stretch. Syracuse doesn’t go through this stretch, we (the players) don’t go through this stretch,” said fifth-year senior Trevor Cooney, who has started 81 consecutive games for the Orange. “It’s not anything anyone is used to around these parts and it’s tough to go through.” Do you remember what happened on Feb. 12, 2014? Then-SU point guard Tyler Ennis drained a 35-footer at the buzzer to lift the No. 1-ranked Orange to a 58-56 win over Pittsburgh at the dreaded Peterson Events Center. The improbable win improved SU’s record to 24-0 — the best winning streak in school history — and had all SU fans believing that destiny and fate had lined up to deliver the program’s second national championship. Sports karma can work in mysterious ways. For Derek Jeter and Tom Brady, the Jeffrey Maier game and the tuck rule game sparked an incredible run of success for them and their teams. But for whatever reason, Ennis’ miracle shot has seemed to have the opposite effect.

Jim Boeheim in his coaching return against North Carolina. Rocco Carbone photo

Consider that since Feb. 12, 2014: SU lost at Duke with Coach Jim Boeheim famously ripping off his jacket before getting ejected for the first time in his Hall of Fame career; the once-magical 2013-2014 season ended with an ignominious 55-53 loss to Dayton in the NCAA Tournament; and Ennis and forward Jerami Grant left earlier than they should have for the NBA. Also, DaJuan Coleman missed the entire 2014-2015 season while recovering from knee surgery and forward Chris McCullough missed half of that season with a knee injury before bolting to the NBA; the Orange, while under an NCAA investigation, banned itself from postseason play in 2015; and the NCAA came down hard on Syracuse and Boeheim for the program’s penalties by taking away scholarships, suspending Boeheim for nine games and removing 101 wins from Boeheim’s record. And, after a 6-0 start this season that included wins over ranked teams Connecticut and Texas A&M in the Battle 4 Atlantis, the NCAA moved Boeheim’s suspension up and the Orange went 4-5 in his absence under assistant coach Mike Hopkins and have lost seven of the last 11 games. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln . . . “We have to get this thing fixed. We’re going to try,” Boeheim said after returning from his suspension against North Carolina and receiving a standing ovation from the crowd of 26,811. “There’s 14 games left to go. There’s a long way to go. We started 0-4 one year (1996-1997) and we won 10 games that year in the league (including a win in the Big East Tournament). We have a lot of hard work ahead of us.” Getting back to the Ennis shot, it’s fair to ask if that play and all of the hype around it elevated Ennis to a level where he didn’t

By Roland Sweet belong, as he was selected 18th overall in the 2014 NBA draft but has been floating in NBA purgatory ever since. If Ennis had stayed for one more year, freshman point guard Kaleb Joseph would have been able to sit and watch for one year, the way future NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams sat his freshman year behind veteran point guard Scoop Jardine. If Joseph was running the point now, forward-turned-point guard Michael Gbinije would be able to play his natural position. Gbinije is one of the nation’s top players at the point, but he can’t pass the ball to himself and it would help to have an Ennis-like distributor for Gbinije, Cooney, freshman sensation Malachi Richardson and Tyler Roberson. Against North Carolina, the Orange led 56-50 with 8 minutes, 28 seconds remaining. But the Tar Heels finished the game on a 34-17 run as they executed the high-low offense to perfection and took advantage of SU’s lapses and lack of muscle in the back of the 2-3 zone. “It was a great effort but it was a poor defensive effort in the last seven or eight minutes of the game,” Boeheim admitted. “There is no excuse for that. We have to do better in those situations, and we will go back to work and try to get better there.” Most alarming has been SU’s inability to finish strong as it has faltered down the stretch in losses to Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, Miami, Clemson and North Carolina. If the Orange had won two of those games, we’d still be talking about making the NCAA Tournament instead of avoiding the NIT. The remaining schedule is unkind, too: SU faces road games at No. 14 Duke, No. 4 Virginia, No. 16 Louisville and North Carolina, and a home game against No. 24 Pittsburgh (rankings as of Jan. 4). The Orange can start to get it going in the right direction Wednesday, Jan. 13, when it hosts lowly Boston College at the Dome. Perhaps an Ennis-like miracle along the way wouldn’t hurt, either; you know, to help reverse the curse. “This is just a bad stretch and you have to learn from it and learn how to close games and get better,” said Cooney, who scored 27 points against North Carolina. “We have no other choice. “Every single game moving forward is life or death,” Cooney added. “You look at our record right now and you’ve got to win games.” SNT

Aroma Therapy

American law-enforcement agencies seeking ways to disperse rioters without killing or injuring them are considering importing a chemical product that Israeli police insist “prevents casualties to protesters and security personnel.” Called Skunk, it smells like raw sewage mixed with putrefying cow’s carcass. Israeli soldiers regularly spray Skunk from water cannons at Palestinian protestors. The mixture of yeast and protein is non-toxic, according to its manufacturer, pesticide specialist Odortec, and the only reported side effect is difficulty getting the stench out of clothing and off bodies. (The Economist)

Slightest Provocation

Thirty people were asked to leave an America’s Best Value Inn in Mason County, Mich., after a disagreement over the waffle maker in the buffet-style breakfast area. “It sounded like one lady walked up and asked the other lady if she was in line for the waffle maker,” Sheriff Kim Cole said. “She didn’t answer, so this lady started to make her waffle. The other confronted her and said, ‘That was my waffle,’ and the other lady said, ‘No, it’s mine,’ and then it went downhill from there.” Cole said that deputies arrived to find “a large group of people arguing over the waffle maker” and “a lot of yelling and screaming, but no one was assaulted.” (MLive.com)

Private Justice

The backlog of court cases in Florida is prompting people waiting for trials to turn to private judges. They promise speedy and private settlements, “not in open courtroom, where everyone and their brother is attending,” said Robert Evans, a public judge for 20 years before he went private. “My marketing motto is: ‘How would you like your trial tomorrow?’” Orange County Chief Judge Fred Lauten conceded that “private judging comes with a cost,” pointing out that people who “can’t even afford an attorney … they’re not going to be able to afford a private judge.” (Orlando’s WKMG-TV) syracusenewtimes.com | 1.13.16 - 1.19.16

husband, Marty. “I want to be that ‘hole in the wall’ everyone drives to.’’ But don’t take that statement to mean Just Donuts offers doughnut holes. It doesn’t. The shop, as its name suggests, offers doughnuts only, made in small batches throughout the day. “We only do one thing,’’ Nerber says, “so we have to do it really well. That’s all we do.’’ Just Donuts opened in October 2012 and has been growing its customer base steadily since then, largely by word-ofmouth and tempting photos on Facebook and Instagram. One way the Nerbers build business is by offering a drawing for a free dozen doughnuts each week. Another way is “Free Delivery Fridays.’’ Order ahead for your office anywhere in Central New York and Just Donuts will bring them to you. Just Donuts offers four old-fashioned, “fried cake’’-style dunkers each day: plain, cider, chocolate and an always-changing bonus flavor, like sour cream, blueberry, pumpkin or banana bread. Doughnuts can be customized in dozens of ways with glazes (maple, peanut butter, chocolate, chocolate mint, marshmallow), drizzles (cream cheese, white icing, strawberry jelly) and toppings (nuts, M&Ms, crushed Oreos, Rice Krispies, Cocoa Krispies, Fruity Pebbles and more).

The more elaborate models are called “Crazies’’ by Nerber and her staff. The Crazies include cider sinkers with maple glaze and crumbled bacon, banana bread doughnuts with chocolate and/or peanut butter glazes and Welcome to the Dark Side, a new Star Wars-themed creation on a chocolate doughnut base, with chocolate glaze, chocolate frosting, chocolate chips and chocolate sprinkles. In a category of its own is the chicken wing doughnut (you read that right), a specialty offered on Sundays only. These are appetizer-size yummies that feature all the elements of the wing experience — chicken, celery, blue cheese and hot sauce — encased in a doughnut. Special and special-occasion orders are encouraged. Nerber and her team supplied doughnuts for several weddings

in 2015. “Doughnuts are the big thing for weddings,’’ Nerber says. “They’re the new cupcakes.’’ Just Donuts, which already has several nuptials booked for this year, also features doughnut trays (featuring either whole or bite-size doughnut chunks) and “do it yourself’’ spreads including doughnuts, crocks of glazes and an array of toppings. Terry Neidl says one advantage to living in Clay is easy access to Just Donuts. The Neidls, who live a couple miles from the bakery, try to limit visits to once a month but have been known to go twice in one weekend when doughnut cravings strike. Neidl is fond of the plain doughnuts, with maple glaze and crumbled bacon on top. His wife, Stephanie, likes peanut butter glaze and strawberry jelly drizzle on her plain doughnut, as well as the banana bread version (with chocolate glaze) and red velvet selection (with cream cheese drizzle) when they are available. “They are phenomenal,’’ Neidl says about the taste treats at Just Donuts. “And a great local family, to boot.’’ Just Donuts is at 219 County Route 57, Phoenix, in the Three Rivers Plaza. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sundays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For information or to place special orders, call 695-1387, email justdonuts1@aol.com, or visit justdonutsnobagels.com. When the set design features five doors (one slides, the rest of them slam shut), the cast includes a quartet of ladies, three of whom are occasionally in various stages of undress, and everyone speaks in an English accent (some more successful than others), theatergoers will know they have entered the British sex-farce zone. For Central New York Playhouse’s production of Move Over, Mrs. Markham (through Jan. 23 at the company’s Shoppingtown venue), director Dustin Czarny juggles the aforementioned ingredients with a frenzied flourish. Things happen fast at the London flat of Phillip Markham (Jack Sherman), a starchy publisher of children’s books, who wrongly suspects his wife of 15 years, Joanna (Kate Crawford), of committing hanky-panky. That’s because Phillip has found the second page of a three-page love note that was accidentally dropped by Linda (Emily K. Buss), the spouse of his business partner Henry Lodge (David Vickers), who is emphatically a cheerful cheater. (“If you don’t like your baker,” he advises Phillip, “you get your rolls elsewhere.”) Linda, who is frustrated with Henry’s playboy shenanigans, contemplates the wonders of whoopee with her own boy toy. Also on the fringes: Alistair (Corey Smithson), an interior designer who feigns feyness so he can canoodle on the side with Sylvia (Alicia Cobb), the Markhams’ French maid. And a trio of characters introduced in passing conversation during the first act will surely turn up in the second, played by a comely Katie Tucker, a dotty Cathy Greer English and a funny-hatted, pratfalling Dustin Czarny.

Mrs. Markham was first produced in 1969, one of a string of reliable box-office hits by Cooney, best known for long-running favorites such as Not Now Darling (1973) and Run For Your Wife (1983). Cooney’s playwriting contemporary is probably Alan Ayckbourn, whose chatty drawing-room social comedies (The Norman Conquests, Absurd Person Singular) were in high demand when they crossed the pond during the 1970s. Yet nobody is rushing to revive Ayckbourn these days, while Cooney’s works have remained evergreen, with their mirthful merging of Are You Being Served-style innuendo and the silliness of Fawlty Towers. Cooney finds his characters endearing despite their ornery instincts, such as David Vickers bringing a smooth yet smarmy charm to his philandering Henry (he deadpans to Phillip that there is no need to bring pajama bottoms to a love tryst). In contrast, Jack Sherman’s stodgy tweediness as Phillip soon morphs into a dithering apoplectic cartoon that triggers much of the slapstick. This pair of jokers also engage in acts of bottom-pinching (the art of “goosing” is discussed) and keyhole-peeping whenever a lady is in her nightie, if only to prove that Cooney’s comedy isn’t a likely candidate for Masterpiece Theatre. Director Czarny knows where the titters are, too, as he smartly deploys the Cooney characters across the set design’s wide expanse, incorporating both the Markhams’ living room and bedroom. Central New York Playhouse’s zippy production of Move Over, Mrs. Markham offers clean dirty fun. SNT

JEFF KRAMER

For Rich Pirong, a monster truck fan who watched the Grandstand implosion with sons Jonthan, 12, and Joey, 9, it wasn’t the TAKE final goodbye just yet. He works at the Camillus landfill where some of the debris was headed. “I’ll see it again,” he said.

QUICK

By Jeff Kramer

GRANDSTAND FAREWELL IS A BOOMING BUSINESS

Anytime a building implodes in Syracuse and civic leaders are expecting it to happen, it should be cause for celebration. To a select few, the demolition of the fabled New York State Fair Grandstand was exactly that. To the Maryland contractor (What’s the deal? No one in upstate New York knows how to blow stuff up?), it was a handsome payday. To the monied equestrian class, it was a jolly hoof to the groin of those grubby dirt racers, whose hallowed mile oval lies in ruins. To Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his upstate lady friend Joanie Mahoney — their hands cupped lovingly over the plunger — the blast was a romantic metaphor worthy of Shakespeare. “These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder Which, as they kiss, consume.” To borrow the county exec’s insult, what an “emotional” moment it was. Under threatening skies on Saturday, Jan. 9, gawkers, malingerers, sentimentalists and the otherwise politically unimportant were herded into the muddy Brown Lot with their phone cameras and memories, far from the VIP tent below. “They’re not going to be up here with the voters,” a man shouted, drawing a laugh. How telling that the powerful Cuo-Honey alliance, entrusted with a $50 million makeover of the State Fairgrounds, couldn’t “grow” a single portable toilet for the hundreds of mourners. Speaking of which, you don’t need to be a wiz to realize that at least some of those Grandstand seats — which meant so much to so many — could have been sold as mementos. Even I might have bought one. I didn’t come of age in Central New York, but I’m starting to understand something about the Grandstand: Not all the action happened on the stage or on the track. “Do you have any fond memories of the Grandstand?” I asked City Court Judge James Cecile after the debris settled.

Kaboom. Jeff Kramer photo

“Yes,” he replied. He refused to elaborate. As it was, my only Grandstand experience consisted of people booing me from there. During a demolition derby at the fair in 2008, I missed the initial impact because I believed I was stuck in Park. In fact, all I needed to do was move this mechanical thingee called a shifter and put the car in Reverse. Racing is complicated that way. Fans assumed I was sandbagging and, according to my wife and then-young children who were in the stands, much vitriol was hurled upon my person and my donated Ford. I heard none of it and finished in third place. It was the most fun I’ve had in my life. Now, the only collisions we’ll see at the fair that don’t involve malfunctioning thrill rides will pit progress against politics. If you’re not sure who’s winning that race, ask yourself this: How often will you attend a concert at the new Lakeview Amphitheater, and then — for a night cap — walk a mile to watch a 1,300-pound Holstein relieve itself while you eat a corn dog? Nor does it make sense, if the goal is to recreate the fair as a multipurpose, year-round venue that will attract people from throughout the Northeast and beyond (Hmmm, where have we heard that before?) to blast into oblivion Super DIRT Week,

which drew 70,000 people and as much as $10 million annually into the local economy. “In Arizona, a kid came up to me and said, ‘It sucks that they’re closing the track. I always wanted to go to Syracuse,” said Mike Mallet of dirttrackdigest.com as he waited for the end. Let’s rewind that: “I always wanted to go to Syracuse.” Who ever says that other than top-ranked high school basketball recruits who can’t get into Duke? I don’t have space to recount the nearly 40 years of memories shared with me in the Brown Lot. From Steve Martin when he was “wild and crazy” to Joie Chitwood careening around the mile oval on two wheels to the last concert by Patti LaBelle. Perhaps the crowd’s sentiments were best captured by Janice Pliszczak (don’t ask). She worked in the box office for years and sometimes had to traverse the walkway behind the Grandstand. She soon learned that big Southern rock bands such as Lynryd Skynyrd attracted serious beer drinkers. “I’d always carry an umbrella,” she said. So should taxpayers. SNT

Grandstand’s LAST STAND The State Fair venue makes an explosive exit

The Grandstand comes down (right) thanks to the state-emblazoned plunger (above) that was triggered by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, County Executive Joanie Mahoney and others (top). Michael Davis photos

A

valued component of Central New York’s entertainment legacy was blown to smithereens on Saturday, Jan. 9, when a series of strategically-placed explosives helped to crumple the New York State Fair’s Grandstand to the ground. The sound could be heard — and even felt — as far away as Bridgeport, serving as testimony to the sheer force that tumbled the multicolored mass of girders and bleachers.

Before the Grandstand went down, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s pre-show provided some political grandstanding. Flanked by area politicians, including Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney, Cuomo announced plans to cut tax rates for small businesses, freeze Thruway tolls and spend $200 million on upstate airports. Then came the main event. “The State Fair really is, in many ways, a metaphor for upstate New York,” Cuomo said. “The State Fair is a great institution and the truth is, it needs advancements. It has not had the kind of investment it should have had over the past few years. Parts of it were not competitive anymore, like the Grandstand, which brings a great sense of nostalgia. I have been coming here for many, many years, so there is a real sense of nostalgia about it. But especially from the Grandstand’s point of view, we would have had to invest a lot of money to make it safe again. We would have had to change the entire venue to make it competitive for acts to come. “And the county, thanks to County Executive Joanie Mahoney, has built a great, new amphitheater, which is exactly state of the art. So this is going to be part of the new fairgrounds, and that’s how I see it. It’s not that it’s a loss. This is about progress, this is about going forward and this is a big step.” The VIPs then gathered around the plunger, as Cuomo ad libbed, “It is the first time I’ve been part of blowing anything up — physically anyway. I blew up a few things in Albany,

but not like this.” The Grandstand’s detonation joined other recent State Fair teardowns such as the nearby series of wooden-built restaurants that hugged the infield fence. New eateries are slated to be built, as well as a recreational vehicle park where the Grandstand once stood tall. An expansive redo of Chevy Court is also in the works, but it’s mind-boggling to imagine that all these renovations could possibly be done in time for the fair’s opening in late August. While Cuomo wants to look forward, here’s a photographic look-back at the Grandstand’s 40-year heyday, which started when the fair began charging separate admission to the Grandstand’s concerts in 1976. (The fair may have got that idea from the Great American Music Fair, a multi-act rock festival presented in the infield in September 1975, which received much ink from the nattering nabobs of negativism at the Syracuse Newspapers.) The seemingly endless list of entertainers (many booked by longtime marketing director Joe LaGuardia) includes Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Aerosmith, Steve Martin, Robert Palmer, Bill Cosby, Britney Spears, Goo Goo Dolls, Alice Cooper, Jeff Foxworthy, Bob Barker, Regis Philbin, Wayne Newton, Deney Terrio, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Wang Chung and plenty more. Plus the Grandstand hosted a number of special events, everything from a Syracuse Crunch hockey game to demolition derbies, boxing cards and tractors pulls, to horse racing at the Syracuse Mile. And what’s wrong with a little nostalgia, anyway? SNT

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) You love auton-

omy. You specialize in getting the freedom and sovereignty you require. You are naturally skilled at securing your independence from influences that might constrain your imagination and limit your self-expression. But here’s a sticking point: If you want the power to help shape group processes, you must give up some of your autonomy. In order to motivate allies to work toward shared goals, you need to practice the art of interdependence. The next test of your ability to do this is coming right up.

work unless you’d rather be doing something else.” So said Taurus writer James M. Barrie (18601937), who created the Peter Pan stories. Your challenge and invitation in the coming months is to increase the amount of time you spend that does not qualify as work. In fact, why don’t you see how much and how often you can indulge in outright play? There will be no better way to attract grace and generate good fortune.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) Here’s my proposal: Get in touch with your madness. And don’t tell me you have no madness. We all do. But listen: When I use the word “madness,” I don’t mean howling rage, hurtful lunacy or out-of-control misbehavior. I’m calling on the experimental part of you that isn’t always polite and reasonable; the exuberant rebel who is attracted to wild truths rather than calming lies; the imaginative seeker who pines for adventures on the frontiers of your understanding. Now is an excellent time to tap into your inner maverick.

CANCER. (June 21-July 22) Here’s an excerpt from Dorianne Laux’s poem “Antilamentation”: “Regret nothing. Not the cruel novels you read to the end just to find out who killed the cook. Not the insipid movies that made you cry in the dark. Not the lover you left quivering in a hotel parking lot. Not the nights you called god names and cursed your mother, sunk like a dog in the living room couch, chewing your nails.” I’m giving you a good dose of Laux’s purifying rant in the hope that it will incite you to unleash your own. The time is favorable to summon an expanded appreciation for the twists and tweaks of your past, even those that seemed torturous in the moment. Laux doesn’t regret the TV set she threw out the upstairs window or the stuck onion rings she had to sweep off the dirty restaurant floor, and I hope you will be that inclusive. LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) “Modesty is the art of drawing attention to whatever it is you’re being humble about,” said Alfred E. Neuman, the fictitious absurdist whose likeness often appears on the cover of Mad magazine. I’m here to tell you, Leo, that now is an excellent time to embody this aphorism. You are in a perfect position to launch a charm offensive by being outrageously unassuming. The less you brag about yourself and the more you praise other people, the better able you will be to get exactly what you want. Being unegotistical and non-narcissistic is an excellent strategy for serving your selfish needs. VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “To go wrong in one’s own way is better than to go right in someone else’s,” says a character in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment. I don’t agree with that idea 100 percent of the time. Sometimes our wrong ideas are so delusional that we’re better off getting interrupted and redirected by the wiser insights of others. But for the near future, Virgo, I recommend Dostoyevsky’s prescription for your use. One of your key principles will be to brandish your unique perspectives. Even if they’re not entirely right and reasonable, they will lead you to what you need to learn next. LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “I love kissing,” testifies singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens. “If I could kiss all day, I would. I can’t stop thinking about kissing. I like kissing more than sex because

by Rob Brezsny

there’s no end to it. You can kiss forever. You can kiss yourself into oblivion. You can kiss all over the body. You can kiss yourself to sleep.” I invite you to temporarily adopt this expansive obsession, Libra. The astrological omens suggest that you need more sweet slippery sensual tender interaction than usual. Why? Because it will unleash sweet slippery sensual tender emotions and sweet slippery sensual tender thoughts, all of which will awaken a surge of dormant creativity. Which you also need very much.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “Everything has

been said before,” said French author André Gide, “but since nobody listens we have to keep going back and beginning all over again.” I am happy to inform you that you’re about to be temporarily exempt from this cynical formulation. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you will be able to drive home certain points that you have been trying to make over and over again for quite a while. The people who most need to hear them will finally be able to register your meaning. (P.S. This breakthrough will generate optimal results if you don’t gloat. Be grateful and understated.)

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Do you want

more money, Sagittarius? Are there treasures you wish you could have, but you can’t afford them? Do any exciting experiences and life-enhancing adventures remain off-limits because of limited resources? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, now would be an excellent time to formulate plans and take action to gather increased wealth. I don’t guarantee total success if you do, but I promise that your chance to make progress will be higher than usual. Cosmic tendencies are leaning in the direction of you getting richer quicker, and if you collaborate with those tendencies, financial magic could materialize.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) “It’s a terrible

thing to wait until you’re ready,” proclaims actor Hugh Laurie. He goes even further: “No one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready.” His counsel is too extreme for my tastes. I believe that proper preparation is often essential. We’ve got to get educated about the challenges we want to take on. We need to develop at least some skills to help us master our beloved goals. On the other hand, it’s impossible to ever be perfectly prepared and educated and skilled. If you postpone your quantum leaps of faith until every contingency has been accounted for, you’ll never leap. Right now, Capricorn, Laurie’s view is good advice.

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Fate has trans-

formed a part of your life that you didn’t feel ready to have transformed. I won’t offer my condolences, though, because I’ve guessed a secret that you don’t know about yet. The mythic fact, as I see it, is that whatever you imagine you have had to let go of will ultimately come back to you in a revised and revivified form -- maybe sooner than you think. Endings and beginnings are weaving their mysteries together in unforeseen ways. Be receptive to enigmatic surprises.

PISCES. (Feb. 19-March 20) Good news: Your eagerness to think big is one of your superpowers. Bad news: It’s also one of your liabilities. Although it enables you to see how everything fits together, it may cause you to overlook details about what’s undermining you. Good news: Your capacity for intense empathy is a healing balm for both others and yourself. At least potentially, it means you can be a genius of intimacy. Bad news: Your intense empathy can make you fall prey to the emotional manipulation of people with whom you empathize. Good news: Your willingness to explore darkness is what makes your intelligence so profound. Bad news: But that’s also why you have to wrestle so fiercely with fear. Good news: In the next four weeks, the positive aspects of all the above qualities will be ascendant.
