“I have worked the Fair every year since I was 13 years old. The Grandstand side was the way to get through the fence. The concerts that I saw and never paid for, it seems many more people would have liked to say goodbye in a more meaningful way. I would have worn my Stray Cats T-shirt and brought a pitcher of wine slushie at the very least. Regardless of what they think, the fairgrounds don’t belong to the politicians. Thanks for the reminder, Kramer, and thank you for embracing what it meant to this community.” — Moe Harrington

Curses, Foiled Again

Police arrested gunman Christopher Trail for holding six people hostage at a pharmacy in Red Bay, Ala. He let five of them go but kept pharmacist Donna Weatherford, who said he forced her to supply him with drugs. After an hour, he asked for a recliner. Told there was none, he pulled some chairs together and dozed off. Weatherford picked up the shotgun and fled to safety. (AL.com)

Sons of Beaches

The world is running low on sand, a finite resource that’s the material basis of glass and concrete. Both are vital to construction, the prime user of sand. Sand is also used in detergents, cosmetics, toothpaste, solar panels and silicon chips. Demand is causing riverbeds and beaches worldwide to be stripped bare to provide the more than 40 billion tons of sand that people consume every year. That figure is increasing due to the worldwide construction boom, particularly in the Arab world, whose abundant desert sand is unsuitable for concrete. As a result, criminal gangs in some 70 countries are dredging up tons of sand to sell on the black market. In India, for example, “sand mafias” have killed hundreds of people, including police officers and government officials, to capitalize on demand for sand. “The fundamental problem is the massive

use of cement-based construction,” said Ritwick Dutta, an Indian environmental lawyer. “That’s why the sand mafia has become so huge.” (Wired)

Naica Gibson, 31, an unemployed mother of four in London, withheld 400 pounds (U.S. $615) from her 1,300 pounds (U.S. $2,000) monthly welfare check until she’d saved 4,000 pounds (U.S. $6,150) to travel to Poland for breast rejuvenation surgery. During the two years she saved, she admitted taking some of the money from the food budget but declared she went hungry as often as her children. When she could afford the procedure, she said the plastic surgeon left one breast bigger than the other and both breasts covered by unsightly scars. She’s asking Britain’s National Health Service to pay 5,000 pounds (U.S. $7,687) for corrective surgery. (Britain’s Daily Mail)

QUICK TAKE

“That’s why the hippies won in the 60s: ’Cuz the Revolution wasn’t boring. They were having a good time.” — Joe Driscoll at the Palace*

By Ed Griffin-Nolan

BERN, BABY, BERN

Even with 14 bands and a crowd of hundreds dancing, singing and shouting, the loudest sound during the Jan. 8 benefit for Bernie Sanders at the Palace Theatre was “the Pause.” The Pause that follows when you ask the question: “Can he win?” The ageless Cortland-based folk singer Colleen Kattau, after singing a riotous musical endorsement of the Socialist senator from Vermont that included her retooled version of the Johnny Cash classic “Ring of Fire,” skipped a beat before answering. “He has the potential to win,” she said. “He has changed the dialogue.” Kattau likes both Sanders’ style, especially how he avoids personal attacks, and his substance, praising him for listing climate change above ISIS as our most serious national security issue. But are Sanders’ supporters serious about more than conversation? Is the upstart campaign that keeps the Clintons up late at night serious about exercising power? Even Joe Driscoll, the prime musical force behind the event, paused amid declaring his love for Sanders and his take on the possibility of victory. “That depends on us,” shouted Driscoll in between introducing bands. “It’s gonna be an uphill battle. On just about every issue he hits it right on the head.” Driscoll originally approached Funk ’n Waffles entrepreneur and Sophistafunk keyboard player Adam Gold about hosting the event at Gold’s downtown venue. When ticket sales boomed, the event was moved to the Palace, where it still sold out at $20 a head. Musicians donated their talents, the Palace offered the theater free of charge, and an enthusiastic crowd networked and drank, danced and sang ’til well past midnight. The place was alive. The crowd was young and old and nearly unanimously white. Two older attendees I spoke with did not pause. Can Bernie win? “Yes,” snapped Pat Mahoney, a semi-retired nurse who has spent 27 years tending the ill at Crouse Hospital. As a woman in an older demographic, she might be considered a likely Clinton supporter. Instead, she is all in for Sanders. “He wants what every American wants: decent wages, health care for all, no more wars.”

Do you believe? Brian Stalter | flikr photo

“No,” replied Dik Cool, longtime head of the Syracuse Cultural Workers, before adding, “It would be nice.” Cool wondered if the young people in attendance would actually vote? That seemed to be the question on the minds of many veteran political activists. The Palace event, like many Sanders rallies across the country, was red hot with energy, but even many who like his message are unable to explain how that might translate into victory. Which is where Michelle Mark and Lauren Livingston come in. Their table in the lobby of the Palace was covered with petitions to get Sanders on the ballot for the April 19 primary. Livingston, who formed a local political action committee to help Sanders, showed me a box filled with signed voter registration forms. Mark said she had gotten more petition signatures on this single night at the Palace than she had acquired during an entire weekend spent knocking on doors. Someone in this town is feeling the Bern. Has there ever been a presidential candidate who drew so many people to an event in Syracuse (probably a thousand

people showed up at some point)? In March 2000, more than a thousand people came out to cheer a then-insurgent Republican John McCain, at Le Moyne College. Jesse Jackson packed the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena (capacity 7,000) during his Rainbow Coalition challenge in the 1988 Democratic Party primary. And here’s the difference: Sanders wasn’t in town for the Palace event. Nobody had to pay 20 bucks to see McCain or Jackson. Add in the student factor, and you have to wonder. “Fund the Bern” took place in early January while most Syracuse University and Le Moyne students were out of town. Driscoll is talking about holding another Bernie bash in mid-April, just before the Democratic primary. If the Democratic nomination is still up for grabs at that point, organizers might want to ask themselves this question: Is the Carrier Dome available? SNT

*Fact check: No doubt that hippies had some good times. As far as winning, our research shows that neither Lyndon Johnson nor Richard Nixon, both of whom won presidential races in the 1960s, were hippies.

WEIRD WHIMSY IN A WILDLY VISUAL SHOW

S

mall Planets, on display at the Edgewood Gallery, focuses on two local artists who have a sense of whimsy and the ability to incorporate other realities into their artworks. Dan Shanahan brings narrative into his hand-colored prints, while J.P. Crangle’s small sculptures portray brothers and sisters from another planet. The exhibition’s selection of Shanahan’s illustrations provide a good sense of his artworks. There are pieces pivoting on a visual twist, like the image of an elephant wearing sunglasses and driving a sports car. In another work, animals stand outside a zoo and observe humans confined there. Other pieces satirize an event such as an artsand-crafts festival. In Shanahan’s black-and-white original, one of the few works in that medium, one booth offers free leaves, while a second sells beer bugs. Meanwhile, two nearby patrons fight over an artwork. In larger works, the artist wanders even further afield. “Cannonball Boulevard” depicts classic

01.20.16 - 01.26.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

cars driving down a long roadway with spectators including birds, dogs and an alligator. “Motor City Missy” integrates several elements: women driving motorcycles, raucous onlookers, futuristic buildings, people in airplanes and other air vehicles watching the competition. A third piece, also with touches from the future, shows people swept into the air toward the Moon Beam Cafe. Shanahan’s best work, “Trom de Triomphe,” demonstrates his ability to fully execute an ambitious project. Here he references a Paris landmark, the Arc of Triomphe, portraying the edifice and lots of cars crashing into each other on the street next to it. Tiny figures, including the Emperor Napoleon and nymphs

associated with classical sculptures, glide about the well-known structure. Crangle has both paintings on board and sculptures on display. The majority of the sculptural works are neither thematic nor figurative; they simply spring from the artist’s imagination. One depicts a small creature with eyes, a long snout, greenish color, and a starfish on top. A second sculpture has three eyes and features suggesting a reptile. There are also creatures fashioned in black and white, a couple featuring knobs and bumps, a figure with a bulbous nose and a twisted grin. A blue mass looking like a toupee and a red-andblack object sit on top. A large sculpture, one of the few in the show, portrays a man wearing a lab coat whose feet are trapped in a bucket labeled “Toxic Waste.” He appears in lavish colors and has a faint resemblance to Elvis Presley. The paintings on board typically are left over from other projects completed by Crangle. For example, there’s a green creature with one eye, a goofy grin and some alligator features. It wears a tunic or sweater. Other works also have a humorous context. The exhibit also has a few figurative works such as a bird and a figure holding a baseball bat. Those pieces don’t stand out by themselves but do remind viewers that the work Crangle has in the Edgewood show are part of a larger portfolio. He has created dozens of caricatures that help decorate Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse, Gannon’s Ice Cream and other locales. A third artist, Sharon Alama, has earrings and collage pins on display. She makes the earrings from thick watercolor paper that she paints with bright colors and decorates with beads. And the pins combine an array of colors, elements such as glass, and a fine sense of texture. Small Planets skillfully presents works that fit in nicely with each other, emphasizes the role of pure imagination, and makes room for pieces that merit extended viewing. Among other things, it displays Crangle’s small sculptures, pieces that haven’t been previously exhibited in a gallery. SNT

A SHOP FOR LOCAL ARTISANS

When closed, the wings of a blue morpho butterfly appear to be dull and brown. Once fully opened, however, they reveal their true, radiant blue color. A similar metamorphosis takes place at the Blue Morpho, the new boutique on 417 S. Clinton St. in Armory Square. Selling anything homemade, this downto-earth shop offers quality repurposed items ranging from organic body products to handmade furniture. “I wanted to help everyone in the community, help the local artisans and have a store that gets out creativity,” said Blue Morpho owner Elizabeth Evans. After facing unemployment in 2008 and selling her own handmade jewelry to consignment stores, Evans’ garage started to fill with collectible items from community artists. So she decided to start her own business, with the Blue Morpho opening its doors Nov. 27. Evans’ motivation is to open the community’s eyes to local, one-of-akind craftsmanship. “There are so many talented people that can make things just as good of quality, if not better, as the people in China or Japan or whatever you find in Walmart,” Evans said. “You can find something locally made here that no one is going to get.” With items ranging from $3 to $700, Blue Morpho features artisan items such as jewelry, furniture and candles crafted by Evans; body products formulated by Iris Laboy; paintings by Penny Santy; tutus sewn by Charraine Jones; pottery and figures sculpted by Becky Baldwin-Bortel; and ornaments and jewelry by Gretchen LaPorte from Wonderfully Made.

“This shop is for people who don’t have a lot of money, but want something special and unique,” Evans said. “I want customers to know that they don’t have to buy something that has come overseas and pay taxes or upscale prices on it.” According to Evans, most of the featured artists have reached out to her. Although 90 percent of the time she agrees to sell what they make, “I want to make sure it is not something like the doilies that your grandma used to make or your crochet tissue boxes. I want to make sure it is new, something that people will use.” The Blue Morpho also aims to help rescued animals: A portion of its profits goes to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Evans’ 6-year-old rescue dog, Jazmine, is a frequent visitor to the boutique. According to Evans, Jazmine spent five years as a puppy mill dog locked in a cage. Blue Morpho also offers organic dog treats and collars by local artists Katelyn Northup and Robert Hatch from Buttons, Bottles and Bowwow. Evans also hopes to open an organic juice bar within her shop. And she’s always looking to showcase more local artists. “I want customers to feel welcome and just be surprised as to what is out there,” Evans said. “There are so many amazing artists out there that are right next door.” The Blue Morpho is currently open Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. SNT

HUNGRY HASHTAGGER HAILS LOCAL EATERIES

Do you love to dine out? Do you Instagram photos of the artistically embellished latte you’re about to drink? The colorful cocktail calling out to you? The elegant restaurant entrée in front of you? Need some inspiration? Feed Me ’Cuse (@feedmecuse) is an Instagram account created by two friends, one a vegetarian and one a carnivore, who teamed up to “hit the best eats of the Salt City for your viewing pleasure.’’ Their first post, in May, was of the lamb schwarma at Byblos Bar and Grille in downtown Syracuse. The carnivore half of the pair has relocated, leaving the vegetarian to maintain the account on her own. (She eats some fish and seafood and includes photos of dishes containing meat.) She is a 20-something who attended the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, moved on for a couple years and returned to Central New York last spring to start a new job. She recently visited Stella’s Diner, Tous les Jours, a new Korean-French bakery on Erie Boulevard, and stopped by Secret Garden, for some bibimbap (a Korean rice and vegetable dish garnished with a fried egg). She’s comfortable with a smartphone camera, as well as a fork and knife. The photos are imaginative and hunger-inducing, and sometimes include “foodin-the-air” photos, like a cider doughnut held above a pile of pumpkins at Chuck Hafner’s in North Syracuse, and a frosted snowflake cookie from Patisserie in Skaneateles, with the lakefront gazebo in the background. Photo captions are catchy and entertaining, with lots of #hashtags. Like “Let it brie,’’ with a cheese platter at Aster Pantry and Parlor. And “Our kind of meat and greet,’’ with a photo of a sandwich from Oswego Sub Shop. She keeps the account anonymous, she says, so she and her dining companion(s) aren’t recognized by restaurant owners and staff. “It’s just something fun we started,’’ she says. “It gets you going to places you wouldn’t otherwise go.

Eats from Feed Me ’Cuse’s Instagram account.

“I want it to be a collection of Syracuse-centered restaurants. I want people to look at the pictures and say, ‘Where should I go for dinner tonight?’” It appears to be catching on: Feed Me ’Cuse has almost 900 followers. Photos that have generated the most viewer response, so far, include a plate of chicken riggies at Strada Mia on the west side of Syracuse and the now-famous chicken tenders at Tully’s Good Times, with multiple locations throughout Central New York. “Tully’s is the only ‘chain’ we’ve done. It’s all about supporting local businesses. People say, ‘Let’s go to Outback tonight’ or ‘Let’s go to Olive Garden.’ You can go to locally owned restaurants that offer the same thing. The goal is to encourage people to dine local and drink local.’’ The @feedmecuse creator tries to post a photo each day, and includes food humor memes on Mondays. She welcomes submissions and opportunities for re-posting food photos from fellow local Instagram users. Tag your posts with #feedmecuse or include the @feedmecuse tag in the caption. Collaboration is key to the sustainability of Feed Me ’Cuse, its co-founder says. She is, after all, a 20-something professional on a limited budget. She posts a lot of photos of cocktails and appetizers, and simple pleasures, like a macaron and espresso drink from Cafe Kubal. She has several favorite food destinations, including Modern Malt, Otro Cinco, Laci’s Tapas Bar and Francesca’s Cucina.

Places on her wish list to visit include Creole Soul, Chorong House and Aloha Japanese Bento Express, among others. She admits to not being much of a home chef. “I try to cook. It’s hard, cooking for one person. I like the idea of cooking. I definitely consider myself a foodie. I enjoy going out.” To follow @feedmecuse on Instagram, go to: instagram.com/ feedmecuse. There’s an App for That! Have you downloaded the Salt City Eats app yet? Look for it in the iTunes app store. Salt City Eats is a curated guide to food and drink in Central New York. The app is organized in four categories and updated regularly: restaurants, caffeine (coffee shops), bars and sweet tooth (bakeries, chocolate shops, ice cream). Scroll through the sections, check menus, find deals and discounts and get directions to businesses. Check it out at instagram.com/SaltCityEatsSyr, twitter.com/ SaltCityEatsSyr and facebook.com/SaltCityEats. Share your experiences and photos with the hashtag #SaltCityEats. TRUMP CARD Local author Hart Seely waxes poetic with The Donald’s own words

B

By Renée K. Gadoua

ack in the day, Hart Seely organized Syracuse’s annual AHOY party. Around Christmastime, local media types and hanger-ons would gather at a mildly seedy bar for loud music, too much beer and the opportunity to cast paper ballots for the Ass Hole of the Year. The candidates usually came from the headlines of the day. For cynical journalists, the AHOY party offered the perfect alternative to the cheery season. That annual debauchery has gone the way of the seven-day local newspaper, but its spirit lives on. Last month, Seely and a few friends got together to choose the biggest AH of 2015. Donald Trump, Republican presidential frontrunner, lost in a run-off vote to Martin Shkreli. He’s the smirking hedge funder whose company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, bought the rights to an AIDS and cancer medication then jacked up the price from $13.50 to $750 a pill. (The other finalists were Sen. Ted Cruz and Jared, the former Subway guy.) It’s hard to argue that Shkreli wasn’t deserving, even in that competitive field. But you’d forgive Seely for rooting for Trump, the subject of his new book, Bard of the Deal: The Poetry of Donald Trump (Harper, $15.99/softcover). “It was a microcosm of the election,” Seely said on an unseasonably warm afternoon before Christmas. “Trump led all night, and in the end, he lost.” Seely predicts that’s what will happen in November, too. “In the end, he’s not going to be able to close the deal,” Seely said, echoing the title of Trump’s 1987 memoir, Art of the Deal. But

01.20.16 - 01.26.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Seely, a longtime Post-Standard writer who left the newspaper voluntarily when it restructured in 2013, hopes Trump stays in the limelight long enough to encourage sales of Bard of the Deal. The book is Seely’s fifth, and the third that capitalizes on found poetry. The literary format takes “existing texts and refashions them, reorders them, and presents them as poems,” explains the Academy of American Poets. “The literary equivalent of a collage, found poetry is often made from newspaper articles, street signs, graffiti, speeches, letters, or even other poems.” American writer Annie Dillard says writers of found poetry “go pawing through popular culture like sculptors on trash heaps . . . by entering a found text as a poem, the poet doubles its context. The original meaning remains intact, but now it swings between two poles. The poet adds, or at any rate increases, the element of delight.” Seely, who claims he does not understand poetry, first took on the form in Holy Cow, a collection of Phil Rizzuto’s comments. A 1993 New York Times review praised the book (co-edited with

comic book writer Tom Peyer) about “America’s favorite daffy uncle” — the former New York Yankees shortstop who spent 40 years as a Yankees announcer. Seely saw similarities in the language of Rizzuto and former U.S. Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld, the topic of his 2003 book, Pieces of Intelligence. They “are the same critter: old guys trying to tap dance,” he told Tom Barbash, also a former Post-Standard writer, in a 2012 interview for the online literary outlet The Rumpus. “The difference is that Phil had the grace to stick with what he was meant to do: broadcast Yankees games,” Seely continued. “He didn’t try to run wars. Rumsfeld looked out at the adoring media throngs and drank his own Kool-Aid. He saw himself as wise and whimsical.” Seely describes his literary scam to Barbash this way: “Take a cultural reference from Column A — let’s say Vagaries of Baseball — and one from Column B — Politics — put them in a blender and press FROTH. Do that, and usually you get something that passes for humor. And if it looks funny, people will laugh, because they don’t want to be left out of the joke.” An example of Rummy free verse: As we know/ there are known knowns./ There are things we know we know./ We also know/ There are known unknowns. Seely laughs when he recites it. The poem got a shout-out last summer in a long piece penned by prolific writer Joyce Carol Oates (a Syracuse University graduate, by the way) for the highbrow literary magazine New York Review of Books about where writers find inspiration. During his 30-plus years writing for The Post-Standard, and before that, the now-defunct Herald-Journal, Seely found inspiration in the weather, crooks and celebrities. He wrote about eggs frying on the hot pavement and the 50 words Syracusans use for snow. He covered Syracuse Mayor Lee Alexander, disgraced in a $1.5 million kickback scandal. He once interviewed Timothy Leary — the 1960s drug guru President Richard Nixon described as “the most dangerous man in America” — in a bathroom after Leary spoke at SU. The idea for a book on Trump’s verse came to Seely after the second Republican presidential candidates’ debate in September. Seely spent about 10 weeks reading everything Trump wrote and tracking down transcripts of Trump’s speeches, rushing to meet the deadline for a Dec. 15 book release. “Journalists are not writing down what he says anymore,” Seely said. “When you write down his words, it’s a different deal than when you get his gestures. He’s a great performance artist.” Seely shakes his head at Trump’s racism and sexism. “He’s horrible, horrible,” he says. But there’s poetic gold in them

thar hills. “Listen carefully, and you will hear the anguished cry of the Poet,” Seely writes in the book’s forward. “He’s irretrievably drawn to going over the edge,” Seely said. “He doesn’t have to talk about going to the bathroom. He doesn’t have to say ‘schlong.’ But he has to. He’s like a 10-year-old. He has to get the cookies from the cookie jar.” Seely couldn’t point to a favorite Trumpism in the book: There are just too many examples, and they keep coming. He read “The Whatever Force,” culled from an Aug. 21 Trump rally in Mobile, Ala.: The reason people like what I’m saying Is because they want to put that energy, Whatever the hell kind of energy it is, I don’t know If it’s screwed up, If it’s good, If it’s, whatever it is … I know how to do things. “The Vicious,” which appears on the back of the paperback, came from an Aug. 9 Trump appearance on Meet the Press: I was attacked viciously By those women, Of course, it’s very hard for them To attack me on looks, Because I’m so good-looking. But I was attacked very viciously By those women. Seely masterfully highlights Trump’s ego, outrageous politics and confusing sentence structure. Consider, for example, “I Got Screwed Out of an Emmy”: Everybody thought I was gonna win it. In fact, when they Announced the winner, I stood up before the winner was announced. And I started walking for the Emmy. And then they announced the most boring show on television, The Amazing Race. Piece of crap. “Trump’s an idiot,” Seely said. “His absolute blind spot is his ego. He’s so drawn to publicity and cameras.” Trump gets away with racist and sexist comments and downright lies because no one in the media holds him accountable, Seely says. “There is no checks and balances anymore,” he said. “You’re waiting for Edward R. Murrow to call him out. There’s no sheriff.” Seely repeats that Trump “is not going to win. We all know that.” But if Trump came to town, Seely would be there. “I’d want to see what it’s all about and experience it and have stories to tell,” he said. And, no doubt, he’d get a few poems to add to his collection. SNT

CHARLIE HUSTLE VISITS CHIEFS’ HOT STOVE

One of Syracuse’s favorite sons and the black sheep of Major League Baseball’s family will be the special guests at the Syracuse Chiefs’ 2016 Hot Stove Dinner and Charity Fundraiser starting at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at the Pirro Convention Center. All-time major-league hit leader Pete Rose is the headliner, with Baldwinsville resident and current Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Jason Grilli joining Rose at the dais. Rose, who was banned from baseball for gambling in 1989 and was recently denied reinstatement by Commissioner Rob Manfred, compiled 4,256 hits in what would have been a Hall of Fame career. He remains extremely popular with fans because of his hustling style of play. “Last year, the Hot Stove set (attendance) records and exceeded our wildest dreams,” Chiefs general manager Jason Smorol said. “This year, we’re going to even exceed those. We have one of the best baseball players of all time and one of the best storytellers of all time in Pete Rose, and one of Syracuse’s favorite sons in Jason Grilli.” Other guests include Chiefs manager Billy Gardner; Chiefs infielder Ricky Hague and his wife, country singer Linda James; and Washington Nationals assistant general manager Doug Harris and director of player development Mark Scialabba. The event features a silent auction of sports memorabilia to benefit

In other Chiefs news, former Chiefs radio announcer Jason Benetti was recently hired as a television play-by-play broadcaster for Major League Baseball’s Chicago White Sox. Benetti, who was the Chiefs’ main radio voice from 2010 to 2014, joins Hank Greenwald, Sean McDonough and Matt Vasgersian, among others, as Chiefs radio announcers who were hired to work in the major leagues. LOCALS PERFORM PLATTERS THAT MATTER

Albums have a way of reminding listeners of a time period, whether it’s the era of the LP’s release or the first moment they heard it. In 2010, married musician couple Bob Kane and Robyn Stockdale capitalized on the concept of mixing and matching local musicians to recreate entire albums that people loved. The arrangement, titled Vinyl Albums Live, benefited everyone: Audiences could enjoy songs they knew, while area musicians could work with other talents to reach different listeners. The first show on Jan. 9, 2010, played to an overflowing house at Mac’s Bad Art Bar in Mattydale, with subsequent shows at Taste of Syracuse and the Lost Horizon. Eastwood’s Palace Theatre will host the next triple bill on Saturday, Jan. 23, which will feature The Eagles’ Hotel California (1976), the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers (1971) and Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run (1975). “It’s phenomenal to see it all come together,” Stockdale says. “We start in the summer, picking — or arguing — about albums. Then we start picking musicians, gauging interest. We start rehearsals in the fall and rehearse bands every week from November to January. It’s a lot of beer and maintaining day jobs! It’s a huge part of our lives and a labor of love.” Slated to perform Hotel California (which will surely be more poignant following the recent death of Eagles singer-guitarist Glenn Frey) will be Jeff Bradbury (keys, vocals), Kevin Farrell (guitar), Mike Frisina (guitar, vocals), Brett Hobin (bass), Shawn Hobin (drums, vocals) and Doug Moncrief (guitar, keys, vocals). Musical personnel for Sticky Fingers include Justin DeAmbra (keys), Jeff Gordon (lead vocals), Kristopher Heels (guitar), Bob Kane (drums), Dave Kane (bass), Scott Sterling (guitar), Don Williams (sax), Todd Stiles (guest third guitar) and Robyn Stockdale (guest vocals). And players for Born to Run will be Bill Barry (keys), Joe Beccheria (guitar), Michael Crissan (lead vocals, guitar), Tony Greene (sax), Bob Caraher (piano), Lenny Milano (drums) and Steven T. Winston (bass).

Vinyl Albums live players Bob Kane (left), Brett Hobin (center) and Todd Stiles. Sandra Jackson photos

There will also be a guest horn section for both Sticky Fingers and Born to Run: Rodney Zajac (baritone sax), Brian Burke (trumpet), Don Williams (tenor sax) and Rich Racculia (trombone). Kane and Stockdale have organized shows featuring everything from Alanis Morissette’s 1995 Jagged Little Pill to Blind Faith’s 1969 self-titled album. While Kane takes on much of the musical direction responsibilities, Stockdale heads marketing, advertising and design. She also gathers sponsors for the events along with Kathleen Mase of KMase Productions. Sandra Jackson of Sublunar Studios also helps with video and photography. The couple are proud of what makes their album re-creation concerts stand out from the rest. “The key difference between the traveling shows and our own is that we use all local players,” Kane says. “We started with The Barndogs when we brought them in to play L.A. Woman. They already did a lot of Doors tunes and learned the obscure songs. After they did that show, more people came to see them in the bars at their own shows. It’s great bringing familiar musicians to the stage, and awesome helping lesser-known musicians get noticed.” Musicians are given the opportunity to play new material with new people, sometimes creating relationships that lead to much more. “At the first rehearsal, you get to see who knows each other,” Stockdale says. “Some musicians have been playing in the scene around each other for years, but never met face to face. Now they get to play together. It’s such a cool moment and makes for a whole new chemistry.” Teaming veterans of these shows with newcomers offers another plus. “When I can’t be around for rehearsals, I can count on the veterans to let me know how things are going,” Kane says. “I can delegate and make sure everyone does what they need to do.”

Kane and Stockdale also work to include a mix of Vinyl Albums Live songs at various musical showcases throughout the summer, including a set at Taste of Syracuse. They also add a finale song to each event, bringing as many musicians to the stage as possible. “We always pick a song with a positive vibe,” Stockdale says, “like ‘Hey Jude’ or ‘With a Little Help From My Friends.’ We always pick from the same time frame as the other albums, but not the same artists being performed that night. Most of my favorite moments from the shows are the finale songs.” This January’s climactic track promises to be no exception, although it will be kept a secret until it is performed. “It’s not even listed in the program,” Stockdale says. Guests for this year’s farewell include Bill Ali, Maureen Henesey, Joanna Jewett and Lisa Romano. This year’s trio of albums have proven the most complex so far. “Logistically, with players and equipment, these are the most difficult,” Kane says. “We have five keys players, two drum sets, a horn section, strings. We want to raise the bar every year. Musicians want the challenge. They rise to the occasion.” The show will also benefit Signature Music, the local nonprofit that helps provide music education to teens of all backgrounds. One dollar from every ticket will go to the organization, as well as money sold during the evening’s raffle and from three “Signature Drinks.” “We do it because it’s good for the scene,” Stockdale says about Vinyl Albums Live. “This collaborative movement is the best thing for the town. The collaborations are good and people can walk away with the music ringing in their ears knowing we have so much talent here and that Syracuse is awesome.” SNT

The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BANK NYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the Department’s website at www.banking.state.ny.us. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed

all such promised services. THE ATTACHED NOTICE IS PROVIDED IN ACCORDANCE WITH AND IN SATISFACTION OF NEW YORK STATE REAL PROPERTY ACTIONS AND PROCEEDINGS LAW § 1303. HELP FOR HOMEOWERS IN FORECLOSURE New York State requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFOR-

MATION AND ASSISTANCE. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with our lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Banking Department at 1-877-Bank-NYS or visit the Department`s website at www.banking.state.ny.us FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Section 1303 NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving the copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you may lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF MORTGAGE COMPANY AND FILING AN ANSWER WITH THE COURT. people involved aren’t actually trying to make a baby, but their contraceptive measure fails or isn’t used at all. According to my analysis, you heterosexual Libras are now more prone to this accidental experience than usual. And in general, Libras of every sexual preference must be careful and precise about what seeds they plant in the coming weeks. The new growth you instigate is likely to have far-reaching consequences. So don’t let your choice be reckless or unconscious. Formulate clear intentions. What do you want to give your love to for a long time?

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) On a clear day, if you stand at the summit of Costa Rica’s Mount Irazú, you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It’s not hard to get there. You can hop a tourist bus in the nearby city of San José, and be 11,200 feet high two hours later. This is a good model for your next assignment: Head off on a stress-free jaunt to a place that affords you a vast vista. If you can’t literally do that, at least slip away to a fun sanctuary where you’ll be inspired to think big thoughts about your long-range prospects. You need a break from everything that shrinks or numbs you.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) I was a rock musi-

weeks could potentially be a Golden Age of Friendship, a State of Grace for Your Web of Connections, a Lucky Streak for Collaborative Efforts. What can you do to ensure that these cosmic tendencies will actually be fulfilled? Try this: Deepen and refine your approach to schmoozing. Figure out what favors would be most fun for you to bestow, and bestow them. Don’t socialize aimlessly with random gadabouts, but rather gravitate toward people with whom you share high ideals and strong intentions.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) A filmmaker working on a major movie typically shoots no more than four pages of the script per day. A director for a TV show may shoot eight pages. But I suspect that the story of your life in the near future may barrel through the equivalent of 20 pages of script every 24 hours. The next chapter is especially action-packed. The plot twists and mood swings will be coming at a rapid clip. This doesn’t have to be a problem as long as you are primed for high adventure. How? Take good care of your basic physical and emotional needs so you’ll be in top shape to enjoy the boisterous ride. CANCER. (June 21-July 22) The city of Paris offers formal tours of its vast sewer system. Commenting at an online travel site, one tourist gave the experience five stars. “It’s a great change of pace from museums full of art,” she wrote. Another visitor said, “It’s an interesting detour from the cultural overload that Paris can present.” According to a third, “There is a slight smell but it isn’t overpowering. It’s a fascinating look at how Paris handles wastewater treatment and clean water supply.” I bring this up, Cancerian, because now is a favorable time for you to take a break from bright, shiny pleasures and embark on a tour of your psyche’s subterranean maze. Regard it not as a scary challenge, but as a fact-finding exploration. What strategies do you have in place to deal with the messy, broken, secret stuff in your life? Take an inventory. LEO. set, I don’t say, ‘Soften the orange a little on the right-hand corner, and put a bit more purple in the cloud color.’” Pioneering psychologist Carl Rogers was describing the way he observed the world. “I don’t try to control a sunset,” he continued. “I watch it with awe.” He had a similar view about people. “One of the most satisfying experiences,” he said, “is just fully to appreciate an individual in the same way I appreciate a sunset.” Your assignment, Leo, is to try out Rogers’ approach. Your emotional well-being will thrive as you refrain from trying to “improve” people -as you see and enjoy them for who they are.

VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The future is headed your way in a big hurry. It may not be completely here for a few weeks, but even then it will have arrived ahead of schedule. Should you be alarmed? Should you work yourself into an agitated state and draw premature conclusions? Hell, no! Treat this sudden onrush of tomorrow as a bracing opportunity to be as creative as you dare. Cultivate a beginner’s mind. Be alert for unexpected openings that you assumed would take longer to appear. LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) More than one-third of all pregnancies are unintended. The two

cian for years, which meant that I rarely went to bed before dawn. I used to brag that my work schedule was from 9 to 5 -- 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., that is. Even after I stopped performing regularly, I loved keeping those hours. It was exhilarating to be abuzz when everyone else was asleep. But two months ago, I began an experiment to transform my routine. Now I awake with the dawn. I spend the entire day consorting with the source of all life on earth, the sun. If you have been contemplating a comparable shift in your instinctual life, Scorpio -- any fundamental alteration in your relationship to food, drink, exercise, sleep, perception, laughter, lovemaking -- the next few weeks will be a favorable time to do it.

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You Sagit-

tarians are often praised but also sometimes criticized for being such connoisseurs of spontaneity. Many of us admire your flair for unplanned adventure, even though we may flinch when you unleash it. You inspire us and also make us nervous as you respond to changing circumstances with unpremeditated creativity. I expect all these issues to be hot topics in the coming weeks. You are in a phase of your cycle when your improvisational flourishes will be in the spotlight. I, for one, promise to learn all I can from the interesting detours that result from your delight in experimentation.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorn

world-changer Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and sent to jail on 29 different occasions. His crimes? Drawing inspiration from his Christian faith, he employed nonviolent civil disobedience to secure basic civil rights for African Americans. He believed so fiercely in his righteous cause that he was willing to sacrifice his personal comfort again and again. The coming months will be a favorable time to devote yourself to a comparable goal, Capricorn. And now is a good time to intensify your commitment. I dare you to take a vow.

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) The birds known as mound-builders are born more mature than other species. As soon as they peck themselves out of their eggs, they are well-coordinated, vigorous enough to hunt, and capable of flight. Right now I see a resemblance between them and many of you Aquarians. As soon as you hatch your new plans or projects -- which won’t be long now -- you will be ready to operate at almost full strength. I bet there won’t be false starts or rookie mistakes, nor will you need extensive rehearsal. Like the mound-builders, you’ll be primed for an early launch.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You are not purely and simply a Pisces, because although the sun was in that astrological sign when you were born, at least some of the other planets were in different signs. This fact is a good reminder that everything everywhere is a complex web of subtlety and nuance. It’s delusional to think that anyone or anything can be neatly definable. Of course it’s always important to keep this in mind, but it’s even more crucial than usual for you to do so in the coming weeks. You are entering a phase when the best way to thrive is to know in your gut that life is always vaster, wilder and more mysterious than it appears to be on the surface. If you revere the riddles, the riddles will be your sweet, strong allies.
