Curses, Foiled Again

Police who accused Alexander Katz, 19, of stealing a car in Logan, Utah, said he and his girlfriend had to abandon the vehicle and call a cab because he didn’t know how to drive a stick shift. The car’s owner spotted the vehicle being driven off and called police, who found Katz and his girlfriend waiting outside a nearby convenience store for their cab. Police Chief Gary Jensen said that although Katz couldn’t drive a stick shift, his girlfriend could and was giving him directions while they tried making their getaway. “I’m not 100 percent certain why she doesn’t just get around and get in the driver’s seat so they can take the car and use it,” Jensen said. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

Colonial Williamsburg will increase hands-on activities at the living history museum by opening firing ranges for 18th-century black-powder muskets. “We think that giving (guests) the opportunity to handle the device, feel the weight of it, the noise, the smell, the recoil, it will provide a fun, enjoyable and of course, educational experience,” officials said, noting the range will feature six to eight lanes where shooters can load and fire the muskets. The Williamsburg City Council approved the proposal last August. (Norfolk’s WTKR-TV)

SOUTH SIDE SUPERMARKET IS SUPER NEWS

I

t had to be a good day when the first witness at a hearing before the city’s Syracuse Industrial Development Agency (SIDA) was the county executive.

On Tuesday morning, Jan. 26, Joanie Mahoney stood up at City Hall to support the quest by Jubilee Homes to bring a supermarket to the near South Side. It’s good to know that the icy relations between City Hall and Onondaga County didn’t stop the two sides from agreeing on measures that will allow a spring groundbreaking for the Price Rite Supermarket on the corner of South Avenue and Bellevue Street. This project has been talked about for nearly seven years, and frankly, many in the community had begun to lose hope that they would ever see it built. Originally Walt Dixie and Jubilee had conceived of a community-run food store in the old Loblaws building at 601 South Ave., but that idea faded and has been replaced by a partnership with Price Rite, a low-cost grocery chain, including one on Erie Boulevard East and Teall Avenue. Price Rite has a track record of keeping costs low, which allows it to price quality foods within the reach of low-income shoppers. Even so, it required tax breaks and cash infusions from all three levels of government to bring the store to this challenging neighborhood.

Since all the rancor over the Inner Harbor Development has claimed so much attention, it was noteworthy that Mahoney and city of Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner did not let their differences derail what all but the nastiest of racists on Syracuse.com believe is a worthy project. For most of us, when we think of having problems getting food, it’s a matter of maybe having to wait through two changes of the left-turn green arrow followed by a frustrating hunt for a parking spot at Wegmans. Or it might come down to the long line to get a table at Pastabilities on a Friday night. On the near South Side, where the Price Rite is to open, it’s a different story. If you live in that neighborhood and you have a car, you can drive out to Walmart, or visit Tops in the Valley, or Wegmans at Western Lights for groceries. If you don’t have wheels, you are at the mercy of the corner stores, which come in two varieties. There are the traditional family-run purveyors of Lotto, beer and cigarettes with a few high-priced staples thrown in, and the new breed of chain drugstores, in this case Rite Aid, which sells frozen food items,

milk that goes sour within a day, and, of course, cigarettes and beer to the mostly poor residents of the neighborhood. The problem is most acute for those who don’t have a car, don’t live on a bus line, or have trouble walking. Their closest option for a grocery run is Nojaims, which involves crossing West Onondaga Street and navigating South West Street with a cart. You see people do it every day, and it’s not easy even when it’s not snowing. Add in one pile of snow left in the intersection and it becomes impossible. This is a town in which many a good idea dies on the drawing table because of negative attitudes and petty squabbling. That didn’t happen in this case, and the applause at the hearing approving the project reflected that sense of unity. The Inner Harbor impasse is, at least on one level, about who can do the better job of making sure the developer hires local workers. (In all honesty, no one has done enough in this arena.) In the case of the supermarket, the Urban Justice Task Force and Jubilee seem to have taken matters into their own hands. Buried deep inside the proposal for the tax breaks and other assistance from the city, the county and the state was a letter from VIP Structures, the developer that will be building the supermarket. Dave Nutting of VIP wrote the letter to his subcontractors encouraging them to go beyond legal requirements for hiring local labor, asked them to build this store “with the community.” It is not a binding document; it’s more like a plea to do the right thing. When the demolition and the building starts, we’ll see how they do at involving local workers in the construction and the staffing of the store. If they hire enough local talent, then it would be a place that feeds a neighborhood twice. Neighbors could find good food at prices they can afford, and jobs that will help them afford it. FEEDING FRENZIES RETURN TO DOWNTOWN

Got cabin fever? An itch to get out? Here’s a reason to pull on your jacket: Downtown Dining Weeks. The 12th annual event, during which participating restaurants offer special menus of three courses for $25 or less, runs Feb. 15 to 29. It’s sponsored by Renzi Food Service and the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. Twenty-nine restaurants will participate this year and eight are new to the event, according to Alice Maggiore, communications coordinator for the Downtown Committee. The newbies — including Aster Pantry & Parlor; Peppino’s Neapolitan Express; Liehs & Steigerwald; Creole Soul; The York; Clinton Street Pub; and The Evergreen — highlight the boom in new restaurants in downtown Syracuse in the last year. Old favorites are also participating, such as Pastabilities, Kitty Hoynes and Lemon Grass. One “restaurant’’ taking part isn’t actually a restaurant. Sky Armory, a chic, multi-floor space for private parties located in the former Wells and Coverly Building (351 S. Clinton St.), will turn its third floor into a “pop-up” restaurant serving elegant, upscale fare prepared by its culinary team, including executive chef Jason Jessmore and pastry chef Esther Houston (formerly of 83 & Co.). The venue is taking reservations at 473-0826 and will also accept walk-ins. Amy Bleier Long, social media and marketing manager for Sky Armory, says offering the “pop-up” during Dining Weeks is a way to spotlight Sky’s focus on restaurant-quality food. “Guests who have come to events at Sky often ask how they can get Sky food outside of being invited to an event,’’ she says. “Being part of Dining Weeks is a great way for us to have people experience our global flavors and fresh, fromscratch food without having to wait for a specific event.’’ View its Dining Weeks menu at skyarmory.com/inspiration/ upcoming-events. Aster Pantry & Parlor recently introduced its new winter menu and will offer an abbreviated menu for Dining Weeks

Aster Pantry & Parlor. Michael Davis photo

that is reflective of the seasons, says Johnathan Gregory, vice president of operations for RainDog Hospitality Group, the company that owns and operates the restaurant (formerly Small Plates Detroit, P.J. Dorsey’s and others). “We are very excited because we feel that Dining Week gives people a reason to get out and go to some of the newer restaurants that they have been meaning to try,’’ he adds. For more information, visit downtownsyracuse.com/dining weeks. Menus will be posted at the Downtown Committee website as they become available. Participating restaurants include:

DOUBLE DUTY IN THE DACKS FOR REDHOUSE REP CAST

S

tephen Svoboda, executive artistic director at the Redhouse Arts Center, must be an inspirational leader. He’s challenged his company to follow him on a daring sylvan adventure: performing Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods and William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in repertory.

REVIEW

Most of the cast perform different roles in these two demanding pieces, often on the same day. It’s a test of their stamina, not to mention their memories! Sondheim’s Into the Woods (1987) revolutionized the subject matter that musical theater could explore. James Lapine’s book cleverly interweaves fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm that we all know from our childhood. By the end of the first act, it would appear that all the familiar characters — Cinderella, Jack of beanstalk fame, Little Red Riding Hood — get everything they wish for. But the rosy picture begins to crack and crumble in the second act, leading Sondheim to explore some unusually dark material for a musical. Cinderella’s handsome prince turns out to be a philandering husband, Rapunzel finds out that danger lurks in the world beyond her tower, and the vengeful widow of the giant slain by beanstalk climber Jack is threatening to destroy them all.

Sondheim tells their stories through his deliciously witty lyrics and beguiling music, fully exploited by Svoboda’s large cast. There are particularly strong performances from Debra Thais Evans as the Witch, Jay Paranada as the Baker, Julia Goretsky as his wife, and John Bixler as the narrator, who in this production is a camp director in the Adirondacks. Some of the repartee is as demanding of exact timing as any operatic scene, as in the quintet in Act II when everyone blames everyone else (“It’s your fault,” “No, it’s his fault”). Music director Patrick Burns kept everyone on track. The challenges in A Midsummer Night’s Dream are entirely different. John Bixler as the fairy king Oberon, a lumberjack in Svoboda’s turn-of-the-century Adirondacks conception, has to deliver some of the Bard’s most enchanting lines incongruously dressed in a red flannel shirt and bearing an ax. Unlike Sondheim’s dark woods, Shakespeare’s forest

is a magical place where the tangled affairs of two pairs of lovers (played by Maxwel Anderson, Mary Nickson, Robin Virginie and Cole Smith) are eventually set straight. “Oh what fools these mortals be,” says Puck (Chris Coffey), whinnying in delight at all the mischief he has caused. Only Shakespeare could have introduced a band of humble workmen into this moonlit landscape, there to rehearse a play they hope will be chosen as part of the king’s upcoming wedding ceremony. The extrovert Bottom (Jay Paranada) inadvertently gets caught in the middle of Oberon’s dispute with his wife Titania (Julia Goretsky) and is converted into an ass. Shakespeare makes the mock-heroic play performed by the “rude mechanicals” ridiculous enough without all the horseplay Svoboda chooses to add. When dealing with the Bard, it’s probably a good idea to trust your source. Into the Woods continues at the Redhouse Arts Center, 201 S. West St., with performances on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 5, 8 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 6, 2 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 11, 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 13, 8 p.m. A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs Thursday, Feb. 4, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 6, 8 p.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 10, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 12, 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 13, 2 p.m. SNT

Lady Swings the Blues Shemekia Copeland visits Homer’s Center for the Arts

S

By Jessica Novak

hemekia Copeland was born into a musical family. Her father, Johnny Copeland, was a blues guitarist and singer who encouraged her to follow her own musical path. When she was just 8 years old, he brought her to sing at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club. Although she wasn’t ready for it then, later in her teens, when her father started slowing down, she ramped up. Copeland has rejoined her former label, Alligator Records, and released Outskirts of Love in 2015. She’s on tour to support the CD, with a stop at Homer’s Center for the Arts on Saturday, Feb. 6. “This record is my third Grammy nomination,” Copeland says. “I’m really excited about that. The album is doing well and I’m real proud of it.” Why did you split with Alligator? I left because creatively I needed to find my way. When I was on Alligator, I was making records every two years and then touring on that record for the next two years. It was too quick. I was on the road or in the studio. There was no time to let life happen. Now, so much has happened in my life. It allowed me to grow. This is my first album back with Alligator since 2006. I started out there, so this was just the natural thing to do. It feels great to be back with them. It’s like going back home. What’s happened in the years since? I was making records on Telarc. I went to Iraq and Kuwait. I saw things that, politically, I didn’t like the way they were happening, in this country and outside of it. The religious hypocrites . . . it was things I had never talked about before. I started talking about those things on Never Going Back

(2009) and continued with 33 1/3 (2012). Now I’ve continued with this one (Outskirts of Love). The conversation got more mature. What responsibility do you feel musicians have to talk about bigger ideas like this? If you have an outlet like we do as artists, what you put out into the universe is really important. That’s why I wanted to do songs about domestic violence on 33 1/3. On Outskirts of Love, date rape is a topic. These are things I’m talking about and I love it. Besides your trips around the world, what else caused the change in content? Age caused the change in writing. I started making records when I was 17. Aging has been a wonderful thing. I grew up on record. It’s limited what you can talk about as a teenager. As you get older, the conversation opens up a little bit. But even as a young girl, I was still pretty bold in what I was saying. As a blues singer, you can do that. Now it’s opened up for me in that respect. I’m almost 37. Tell me more about your tour of the Middle East. I went over with a few artists for a couple weeks. We went around to bases in Iraq and Kuwait and performed for troops.

It changed my life. The day I was leaving there was the day Obama was announced the new president. It was just the strangest feeling. There is no mood there, that’s the funny thing. Nobody talks about politics. The people who live there don’t and the soldiers definitely don’t talk about it. It just wasn’t discussed. What impacted you most from that experience? How young those kids were at the time. I noticed that. The sacrifice. How some of these guys can’t rent a car in America, but could sacrifice their lives for their country. It’s just amazing. Tell me how that translated into your songwriting process. I work with really great songwriters and we just work it out together. John Hahn, I’ve known since I was 8 years old and we’ve been working together for about that long. We talk every day. We’re always coming up with ideas about songs. Where do you see the blues in 2016? I try not to think about the state of the blues. As long as I’m here and the other artists coming up are doing this music, it’s going to be fine. It always has been. It’s always stood the test of time. I don’t worry about it. What else should people know about Outskirts of Love? Oliver Wood from the Wood Brothers produced my last three records and he’s just brilliant. I really enjoy working with him. He’s unbelievably creative and brings out things in me that I didn’t know were there. I’ve learned that the subtleties in your voice can be just as powerful as the power in it. That’s the best lesson. SNT Shemekia Copeland performs Saturday, Feb. 6, 8 p.m., at the Center for the Arts, 72 S. Main St., Homer. Tickets range from $15 to $33. IAN STEWART: ALL ABOUT THE BASS

Grammy-winning bassist John Benitez stands out in the world of music, especially in genres of jazz, Latin jazz and Pan-American. The composer, producer and bandleader has performed with Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Tito Puente and John Scofield and was chosen by the U.S. Information Agency and the Kennedy Center to work as a jazz ambassador on a tour of South America. It’s easy to see why locally born bassist Ian Stewart was drawn to Benitez. However, it was luck and hard work that introduced the pair and led to Stewart’s book, The John Benitez Bass Method, Vol. 1: Freedom in the Clave: A Rhythmic Approach to Bass Playing. Stewart was raised on a solid diet of jazz-fusion, as he listened to Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Return to Forever and Weather Report. He started electric bass when he was 12 and upright at 16. After earning his jazz studies degree from SUNY Purchase in 2008, he relocated to Chicago’s Latin-jazz scene, followed by a stint with the progressive jazz-rock band Marbin from 2010 to 2012. “A lot of what’s happened in the past few years was mostly a reaction,” Stewart explains. “Marbin was a significant part of my life for two years. I was all over the country 300 days a year. When I left the band, I went back to Chicago and found refuge, for whatever reason, in the Latin music scene.” Within that scene, Stewart met Darwin Noguera and played with the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble and Noguera’s Evolution Quartet. He started playing with composer and multi-instrumentalist Hector Silveira and began delving into Timba and Cuban music. He eventually started writing for Timba.com, which is run by editor Kevin Moore. “I went to New York City in September 2013 and that’s when I met John Benitez,” Stewart recalls. “I was writing concert reviews. I met John through a friend and sat in at a gig. He really enjoyed my playing. He said, ‘If you move to New York, I’ll recommend you for work.’ It was a no-brainer.” Stewart saved enough money for the Manhattan move by May 2014. He was

subbing for Benitez and still writing for Timba.com when he had an idea to write the book. He had been transcribing Benitez’s playing from tracks on a few albums he was on and thought to compile them. “He wanted to do a method book,” Stewart says. “He had exercises he showed students and an overall teaching philosophy he wanted to share. I did my first transcription in July 2014, and the book was published on March 25, 2015.” The book is the first in the Bass Method series that will compile Benitez’s methods developed over years of professional playing and giving private instruction. The first volume serves as a collection of rhythm exercises “designed to strengthen a student’s overall rhythmic confidence and awareness in regards to the clave (a rhythmic pattern in Afro-Cuban music), thus facilitating higher degrees of creativity and expression during performance,” according to the Amazon.com description. Timba.com editor Moore helped edit and organize Stewart’s book. He self-published the work using Amazon.com and now sells consistently online. Stewart is currently working on two more books. Stewart’s next musical project will be an album with Wilson “Chembo” Corniel. Land of The Descendents, which features Latin jazz styles from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Peru, will include musicians Frank Fontaine (saxophone), Darwin Noguera (piano), Joel Mateo (drumset), Kat McRae (vocals), Benjamin Sutin (violin) and James Zollar (trumpet). Meanwhile, positive word of mouth for the Benitez tome is spreading among professional bassists. “Damian Erskine put a review up on Amazon,” Stewart says. “Professional players are just buying it on their own.”

2.3.16 - 2.9.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

The book also provides an enlightening preface helpful to all musicians, not just bassists. Comparisons are drawn between spoken language and music, and the importance of strengthening basic abilities, such as rhythm. “The more ‘serious’ we get about music, often the more we become guilty of ignoring or undermining the reasons we started playing in the first place,” Stewart writes. “We started because we like the way it sounds, feels and because we wanted to play like and hopefully with, the musicians we admire. The closer we stay to this state of mind, the happier and more inspired we should remain.” Stewart’s passion as a musician and writer also extends to the importance of music in culture. “My main concern is that people are less exposed to live music and art,” he says. “People will pay unbelievable amounts of money to see huge concerts where people lip-sync to prerecorded tracks but will leave a bar the moment a real band plays. Lack of music education in public school plays a big part. It’s been said that most of today’s popular music is written at a third-grade reading level, and judging by what I hear, I can agree. For too many people, music has become something that comes out of a computer and requires little to no effort to absorb. “As musicians, we are supposed to challenge listeners. It is not our responsibility to worry about what people like or want. It’s other people’s responsibility to be able to understand what we’re doing and appreciate it on a higher level. I would challenge anyone to take a hard look at what they listen to and ask themselves, ‘What does this really say about me?’” To order the book, visit amazon.com or bassbooks.com. SNT

QUICK TAKE

By Matt Michael

That’s What He Said: “It’s just stupid. And it’s really scary when the people that are doing these things don’t see that. Really, really scary.” — Jim Boeheim on the ACC schedule makers who had the Orange playing three games in seven days before an eight-day layoff.

ORANGE REBOUNDING AS SEASON WINDS DOWN

He was critical. He was snarky. He was dismissive. But more than anything in the moments following North Carolina’s 84-73 win over the Syracuse University men’s basketball team on Jan. 9 at the Carrier Dome, Orange coach Jim Boeheim was defiant. “There’s 14 games left to go. There’s a long way to go,” Boeheim said. “We’ve started 0-4 one year (1996-1997) and we won 10 games that year in the league (the Big East Conference). We’ll be fine.” But how many out there really believed it? The Orange had lost its first four Atlantic Coast Conference games (and seven in a row over the last two seasons), there appeared to be deficiencies up and down the roster, and the ACC schedule wasn’t going to get any easier. But once again, we should have listened to the 71-year-old Hall of Fame coach who has been going around this block for 40 years now. After that loss to North Carolina, the Orange had won five of its last six games entering the Feb. 2 game against Virginia Tech at the Dome. During that stretch, the Orange defeated then-No. 20 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium (where once every 10 years or so an official’s late-game call actually goes against the Blue Devils), then-No. 25 Notre Dame, and a pesky Georgia Tech team that upset then-No. 4 Virginia earlier this season. Syracuse’s only loss was at thenNo. 13 Virginia, where, as Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said, “No one wins.” Yes, the Orange will be fine. “I think they’re a confident team,” Brey said. “When you go down there and win at Wake (Forest) and then win at Duke within three days, you’ve got something to work with there. No one wins at Virginia, so I wouldn’t even count that one. “I think Syracuse is an NCAA Tournament team, and obviously having Jim (Boeheim) back with them now, they have that look,” Brey said. The Orange went 4-5 under assistant coach and head coach designate Mike Hopkins during Boeheim’s nine-game, NCAA-imposed suspension that ran from Dec. 5 through Jan. 5. No one with the

program is saying the Orange would have done better with Boeheim, and clearly the team needed time to mesh with a forwardturned-point guard (Michael Gbinije); a shooting guard playing small forward (Malachi Richardson); a forward often playing center (Tyler Lydon); a center returning after missing two years because of injuries (DaJuan Coleman); and three freshmen among the team’s top seven players (Richardson, Lydon and Frank Howard). Still, there’s no question the Orange got its swagger back when Boeheim returned. Two recent examples: After getting into a scrum with Notre Dame’s Matt Ryan that resulted in a double technical foul, Richardson immediately answered with a 3-pointer; and, after getting poked in the eye “like the Three Stooges” by a Georgia Tech player, Gbinije sat out a few seconds and sank a 3-pointer as soon as he returned. “We all had a positive mindset,” Richardson said when asked what the players were thinking after the North Carolina game. “We knew we weren’t going to be losing every game. It just took a collective effort and we needed everybody.” Richardson, who’s averaging more than 15 per game and has made numerous clutch shots in ACC play, has been one of the keys to the turnaround. Junior forward Tyler Roberson, who was one of four ACC players averaging a double-double in league play entering the Georgia Tech game, has also stepped up his game. The defense, particularly in the frontcourt, has also improved. “Like Coach Boeheim said, we had a really long season ahead of us so we had to keep practicing hard and getting better,”

Roberson said. “We had to come together and keep fighting and things will turn around.” With seven games remaining, the Orange now controls its own destiny as far as making the NCAA Tournament. And there’s more good news: Boeheim, who tends to know about these sorts of things, said there’s still room for improvement. “We still got a lot of work to do, I think, and hopefully we’ll get better,” he said. “Although I think we played well (recently), I think we can play a lot better and hopefully that’s what is ahead of us.” Dwayne, Danforth and Dino • The Orange players are raising awareness of former star Dwayne “Pearl” Washington’s fight against brain cancer by wearing “Pearl” warm-up T-shirts before games. T-shirts with “Syracuse 31 #PrayersForPearl” are also being sold around town to support one of the Orange’s all-time fan favorites. “There’s no better guy and there’s nobody who means more to our basketball program than Dwayne Washington,” Boeheim said. “So I appreciate all that’s been done for him and the thoughts people have come forth with. It means a lot to me and means a lot to him.” • At halftime of the Georgia Tech game, Syracuse honored the 1975 team that was the first SU team to reach the Final Four. Head coach Roy Danforth (Boeheim was an assistant coach for that team) and all of the living members of the team returned to Syracuse for the ceremony. “For us, we hear the things like, ‘That team shouldn’t have been there, shouldn’t have done this or that,’ we ‘overachieved,’” said Jim Lee, one of the team’s stars. “But I’d rather be an overachiever in life than an underachiever and I think I speak for everyone on our team when I say that.” The 1975 Orangemen finished 23-9 and won the Eastern College Athletic Conference title before losing to Kentucky in the Final Four. “I think it’s the greatest feat Syracuse basketball has ever accomplished,” Danforth said. “It was the first time that it happened, and it’s always difficult to get over the hump the first time.” • Syracuse released its 2016 football schedule, and new head coach Dino Babers will make his Dome debut Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. against Colgate. The other home games are: Sept. 9, Louisville; Sept. 17, University of South Florida; Oct. 15, Virginia Tech; Nov. 12, North Carolina State; Nov. 19, Florida State. REMEMBERING THE BIG FLAKEOUT OF 1966

The first snowflakes started falling on Sunday, Jan. 30, 1966. By the time the blizzard ended on Tuesday, Feb. 1, more than 42 inches of snow had paralyzed the Salt City. That’s when Mike Price dressed in his heavy winter coat, laced up his black leather boots and left his wife and two children in Meadowbrook to trudge four miles through the mounds of snow to WNYS-Channel 9’s Shoppingtown studio. “Walking in and getting there I felt like a pioneer, an adventurer to walk through that snow and get to work,” recalled Price, 78, a Channel 9 (now WSYR-TV) staff announcer at the time. Price, born and raised in Syracuse, never experienced a storm like the Blizzard of 1966. Fifty years later, he remembers how it crippled the city of Syracuse yet also brought neighborhoods together. “In the 20th century in our area I don’t think there has ever been one that has matched it,” said Price. According to Mark Monmonier, a geology professor from Syracuse University, this particular blizzard was part of a cyclonic system that was brought by moisture from the Atlantic Ocean, rather than off Lake Ontario, although there was some “lake enhancement” that fueled the storm. “It came as a bit of a surprise,” Price said. “We didn’t have Doppler radar. They knew a storm was coming but not as much as we had.” Unable to leave the studio, Price and eight other coworkers camped out overnight, finding any place they could to get a few hours of sleep. “In the broadcast business, it gave us a sense that people depended on us, so we better get there and do what we need to do,” Price said. “That was part of the work ethic of those days: to fulfill an obligation.” At least Price was able to walk in the middle of abandoned streets to get to Channel 9. Shirley Woodard, 87, of Constantia and Nadine Monroe, 81, of Minoa were like many residents during the storm who were shut in their houses without electricity.

“There was just snow everywhere, you couldn’t see a single thing outside,” said Monroe. “All we could do was stay inside and watch it come down. And we just waited for it to go away.” The huge amount of snow, combined with 58 mph winds and temperatures that dipped to 26 below, meant that residents were unable to get out of their houses. “We couldn’t get out of our door because the snow covered our windows,” Woodard said. “My husband got a path made so we could get on top of the snow. But we couldn’t find our car. We knew it was in the driveway but we didn’t know exactly where it was.” Although the storm involved a full day of shoveling, Monroe recalls how much fun everyone had with the tunnels that were built above her head in the snow. She remembers seeing nothing but the thick white snow that covered the top of her mother’s tall window. “The kids, of course, loved it,” Monroe said. “The snow was so high they could walk around underneath the telephone wires.” Forced to stay inside, many residents depended on candles for light and their ovens for heat, while children played with jigsaw puzzles. Although Woodard, a Syracuse native, was accustomed to harsh winters, “We never expected it to be like that.” After the storm, neighbors came together to help dig out others. “When something like that happens, neighbors assist each other,” Price said. “It didn’t create any lasting friendships with our neighbors but if there was another crisis, we would help each other.”

2.3.16 - 2.9.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Woodard’s husband owned a snowmobile, so he helped deliver groceries to stranded neighbors. When a neighbor suffered a heart attack during the storm, Woodard’s husband came to the rescue. “They had called the ambulance, but the ambulance was up on Route 49 and couldn’t get where we were,” Woodard said. “So they strapped the man to my husband and he took him up to the ambulance.” There were plenty of similar emergencies during the storm. According to The Post-Standard, there were several reports of babies being born outside hospitals and parachutes were dropped with food to stranded residents. Then-Gov. Nelson Rockefeller issued snow removal equipment to Central New York to handle the mounting crises. The blizzard cost the city of Syracuse an estimated $217,000 and added approximately 300 million gallons of water to the water supply. According to Price, local fire and police departments were a huge help to the community. “They started to get some streets plowed, and fire departments were really good about helping stranded senior citizens and people with disabilities,” Price said. “They made the rounds to get those people the help that they needed.” Long after the storm, people could not shake the frozen memories. “Everyone talked about it,” Monroe said, “we just couldn’t get over how much snow there was.” And Woodard declared, “I’m 87 years old and I still remember it.” SNT

FREE WILL A STROLOGY

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) The Bible’s Book of

Exodus tells the story of the time Moses almost met God. “Show me your glory, please,” the prophet says to his deity, who’s hiding. “You cannot see my face,” God replies, “but I will show you my back parts.” That’s good enough for Moses. He agrees. I hope that you, too, will be satisfied with a tantalizingly partial epiphany, Aries. I’m pretty sure that if you ask nicely, you can get a glimpse of a splendor that’s as meaningful to you as God was to Moses. It may only be the “back parts,” but that should still stir you and enrich you.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) The archaic English word “quaintrelle” refers to a woman who treats her life as a work of art. She is passionate about cultivating beauty and pleasure and wit in everything she is and does. But she’s not a narcissistic socialite. She’s not a snooty slave to elitist notions of style. Her aim is higher and sweeter: to be an impeccable, well-crafted fount of inspiration and blessings. I propose that we resuscitate and tinker with this term, and make it available to you. In 2016, you Tauruses of all genders will be inclined to incorporate elements of the quaintrelle, and you will also be skilled at doing so. If you have not yet dived into this fun work, start now!

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) Sufi teacher (and

Gemini) Idries Shah offered this teaching: “They say that when Fortune knocks, you should open the door. But why should you make Fortune knock, by keeping the door shut?” Let’s make this your featured meditation, Gemini. If there is anywhere in your life where proverbial doors are shut -- either in the world outside of you or the world inside of you -- unlock them and open them wide. Make it easy for Fortune to reach you.

CANCER. (June 21-July 22) Many Cancerians

harbor a chronic ache of melancholy about what they’re missing. The unavailable experience in question could be an adventure they wish they were having or an absent ally they long to be near or a goal they wish they had time to pursue. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can harness the chronic ache. In fact, it’s your birthright as a Cancerian to do so. If you summon the willpower to pull yourself up out of the melancholy, you can turn its mild poison into a fuel that drives you to get at least some of what you’ve been missing. Now is a favorable time to do just that.

LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) How will the next chapter of your story unfold? I suspect there are two possible scenarios. In one version, the abundance of choices overwhelms you. You get bogged down in an exciting but debilitating muddle, and become frazzled, frenetic and overwrought. In the other possible scenario, you navigate your way through the lavish freedom with finesse. Your intuition reveals exactly how to make good use of the fertile contradictions. You’re crafty, adaptable and effective. So which way will you go? How will the tale unfold? I think it’s completely up to you. Blind fate will have little to do with it. For best results, all you have to do is stay in close touch with the shining vision of what you really want. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “To hell with my suffering,” wrote Arthur Rimbaud in his poem “May Banners.” I suggest you make that your mantra for now. Anytime you feel a sour thought impinging on your perceptions, say, “To hell with my suffering.” And then immediately follow it up with an expostulation from another Rimbaud poem, “It’s all too beautiful.” Be ruthless about this, Virgo. If you sense an imminent outbreak of pettiness, or if a critical voice in your head blurts out a curse, or if a pesky ghost nags you, simply say, “To hell with my suffering,” and then, “It’s all too beautiful.” In this way, you can take advantage of the fact that you now have more power over your emotional pain than usual. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “I like people who

unbalance me,” says Irish writer Colum McCann.

by Rob Brezsny

Normally I wouldn’t dream of encouraging you to make the same declaration, Libra. My instinct is to help you do everything necessary to maintain harmony. But now is one of those rare times when you can thrive on what happens when you become a bit tilted or uneven or irregular. That’s because the influences that unbalance you will be the same influences that tickle your fancy and charge your batteries and ring your bell and sizzle your bacon.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) The African Association was a 19th-century British group dedicated to exploring West Africa. Its members hoped to remedy Europeans’ ignorance about the area’s geography. In one of the association’s most ambitious projects, it commissioned an adventurer named Henry Nicholls to discover the origin and to chart the course of the legendary Niger River. Nicholls and his crew set out by ship in their quest, traveling north up a river that emptied into the Gulf of Guinea. They didn’t realize, and never figured out, that they were already on the Niger River. I’m wondering if there’s a comparable situation going on in your life, Scorpio. You may be looking for something that you have already found.

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Richard P.

Feynman was a brilliant physicist who won a Nobel Prize in 1965 for his pioneering work in quantum electrodynamics. He also played the bongo drums and was a competent artist. But excessive pride was not a problem for him. “I’m smart enough to know that I’m dumb,” he testified. “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself -- and you are the easiest person to fool.” I suggest you adopt him as your role model for the next two weeks, Sagittarius. All of us need periodic reminders that we’ve got a lot to learn, and this is your time. Be extra-vigilant in protecting yourself from your own misinformation and misdirection.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Food con-

noisseur Anthony Bourdain has a TV show that enables him to travel the globe indulging in his love of exotic cuisine. He takes his sensual delights seriously. In Charleston, S.C., he was ecstatic to experience the flavorful bliss of soft-shell crab with lemon pasta and shaved bottarga. “Frankly,” he told his dining companion, “I’d slit my best friend’s throat for this.” Bourdain was exaggerating for comic effect, but I’m concerned you may actually feel that strongly about the gratifications that are almost within your grasp. I have no problem with you getting super-intense in pursuit of your enjoyment. But please stop short of taking extreme measures. You know why.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may some-

times be drawn to people or places or ideas long before they can give you their gifts. Although you sense their potential value, you might have to ripen before you’ll be ready to receive their full bounty. Here’s how author Elias Canetti expressed it: “There are books, that one has for 20 years without reading them, that one always keeps at hand, yet one carefully refrains from reading even a complete sentence. Then after 20 years, there comes a moment when suddenly, as though under a high compulsion, one cannot help taking in such a book from beginning to end, at one sitting: It is like a revelation.” I foresee a comparable transition happening for you, Aquarius.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The Leaning Tower

of Pisa is eight stories high, including its belfry, and tilts sideways at a four-degree angle. When builders started construction back in 1173, they laid a weak foundation in unstable soil, and the building has never stood straight since then. And yet it is the most lucrative tourist attraction in the city of Pisa, and one of the top 10 in Italy. Its flaw is the source of its fame and glory. What’s the equivalent in your world, Pisces? Now is a favorable time to take new or extra advantage of something you consider imperfect or blemished.
