In the aftermath of the Feb. 20 Nevada Democratic Presidential Primary many media outlets reported on the “big win” for Hillary Clinton. While Hillary certainly won the caucus state, polls had given her at least a 25 percent lead over Bernie Sanders just a few weeks earlier. Such a significant increase in support for Bernie in Nevada is another indication that he continues to build more momentum. Were any of the Republican candidates to have gained that much ground on Trump, the headlines would have screamed about it. In addition to the enthusiastic youth turnout for Bernie, he also won the Latino vote in Nevada, making it clear that he can win support among people of color. Bernie’s platform calls for Medicare for All, getting money out of politics, strong action to combat racism, a green energy revolution and much more. Syracuse for Sanders is a grassroots organization working hard to bring Bernie’s political revolution to Central New York. Fred Habermel, 72, filed a lawsuit against Norton Healthcare for losing part of his brain. The complaint said doctors at Norton Cancer Institute in Louisville, Ky., extracted a piece of brain tissue to use to develop a vaccine to inject into Habermel’s head in an experimental procedure to fight a brain tumor that had resisted previous treatment. “I can see losing a blood sample, but how do you lose brain tissue?” his attorney, Gary Weiss, asked. “I can’t imagine worse negligence.” Weiss said Habermel doesn’t have enough of the affected tissue left in his brain to undergo the procedure again. Despite his client’s poor prognosis, Weiss noted one silver lining: The hospital told them they wouldn’t have to pay for the surgery. (Louisville’s The Courier-Journal)

A British immigration court overturned a deportation order for a foreign criminal because he is an alcoholic. The 53-yearold man, who came to Britain from Libya in 1981 and has been convicted of 78 assorted offenses, appealed on the grounds that deporting him would violate his human rights because he would face physical punishment and imprisonment in his homeland for his uncontrollable drinking. The court noted that his many, unspecified offenses were committed “largely and possibly exclusively as a consequence of his alcoholism” but Upper Tribunal Judge Jonathan Perkins said deportation would deprive him of his “right to family life” in Britain, enabling him to continue his alcohol-fueled criminal behavior. JEFF KRAMER By Jeff Kramer

CRYSTAL BALL GAZERS PREDICT PREZ RACE

Fascist Donald Trump will narrowly defeat Democrat Bernie Sanders in the race for the White House, according to a new poll of psychics — the only presidential poll that matters, if you really stop to think about it. Departing from his usual satirical approach, a local humor columnist who is maintaining anonymity conducted the poll of mystics, mediums and seers last weekend at the Syracuse Psychic Festival at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool. Among other shockers, the survey revealed that up to 22 percent of those who accept money for forecasting the future and talking to dead people don’t know who the major presidential candidates are. “Who’s running?” several asked. The poll contains a margin of error of zero. As psychic medium Maggie The Violet of the Nile noted, “I’ve never been wrong.” That isn’t to say the results were not without ambiguity. Trump actually tied for first place with “Don’t Know.” Both received 23 percent. Only 15 percent of the psychics polled believe Bernie Sanders will be our next president. An equal percentage believe a still-unannounced candidate (other than Michael Bloomberg) will rise from the mist to become leader of the free world. The poll of 13 clairvoyants consisted of 10 questions related to the upcoming election, including “The blood of which species of livestock will Ted Cruz drink in a nationally televised tribute to Lord Sauron?” As expected, Goat beat Chicken and Cow by 2-to-1 margins. But even here there were surprises. In what could augur a change in the Food and Drug Administration’s definition of “Livestock” under a Trumpian White House, other responses were scorpion, Komodo dragon, bat and troll. Respondents were also asked which race, religion or nationality Trump will insult next. Asians “won” that round, polling nearly 25 percent, although a significant plurality of 15 percent foretold a universal Trump Super Insult that will leave virtually everyone on the planet feeling belittled.

The Rev. Michael Phoenix Heart of the Eternal Temple of Oneida.

In other findings: • A staggering 88 percent of the psychics believe Clarence Thomas is wearing something under his robe. (Note: A few were too grossed out to answer the question.) “No pants, shirt only,” Angela Mystic reported. “A T-shirt that says, ‘I brake for porn,’” offered spiritual guide Lisa Lu. Another psychic breathed deeply and announced: “Briefs. Female. Silk. Floral.” • Eighty-five percent of the respondents were confident that the rumply Sanders will not have his suit pressed at a professional dry cleaning establishment before the May 17 Oregon Primary. • Fifty-four percent foretold that the next Supreme Court justice will be appointed by Obama, not his successor. They were far less galvanized on the question of what software upgrades will be in future versions of the Creepy Ben Carson Human-Like Simulation. Answers ranged from a Scientology program to Personality 2.0. One hard-to-reconcile data point: By a margin of 38 percent to 30 percent, the psychics predicted that Hillary would win the Democratic nomination. Yet when asked in a separate question who would win the general election, the psychics made Sanders the Democratic standard bearer.

How could that be? Some analysts believe the seemingly nonsensical result could lend credence to the long-feared Democratic Convention horror scenario in which Bernie, in an ebullient display of party unity during his concession speech, knocks Hillary from the race with an errant hand gesture. The findings also poured cold water on a possible scheme to overcome Hillary’s likability issues by skirting presidential term limits stipulated in the 22nd Amendment. Should Hillary make Bill her running mate and promise to get sick and let him take over once she gets elected? No, it won’t work, the psychics mostly agreed. Pity. Professing a general uneasiness on venturing into the political realm, the psychics predicted more campaign chaos. At least one seer warned that excessive levels of political prognostication risk changing the outcome. “If enough of us try to see into the future on presidential politics, it can ruin the election,” warned The Rev. Michael Phoenix Heart of the Eternal Temple in Oneida. “Karma is a big real deal.” The humor columnist immediately issued a terse rebuttal: “Altering the natural course of the 2016 election and perhaps setting the stage for global Armageddon is a small price to pay for accurate poll data.” SNT

AREA MENUS GET BOWLED OVER

Bowls are big business. Once reserved for mainly pasta, soup and cereal, they’ve pushed the plate aside to become a most valuable player at mealtime. The Wall Street Journal made note of the trend toward bowl-icious eating, declaring “bowls are the new plates” in a story earlier this year. You could spend hours scrolling through photos of bowl food on Pinterest, where meals in bowls are giving Mason jar meals a run. There are smoothie breakfast bowls, quinoa lunch bowls, roasted winter vegetable bowls, noodle bowls, superfood bowls, and on and on. Bowls are also gaining favor on restaurant menus. Grain bowls (brown rice topped with steamed kale and other veggies) and Buddha bowls (quinoa topped with cabbage, carrots, zucchini, raw sauerkraut and avocado) have long been customer favorites at LoFo, on Walton Street, which is closed until spring for remodeling. Bowls are the basis of everything on the menu at Core Greens, Grains and Bone Broth in North Syracuse. Fast-casual chain Panera Bread offers several broth bowls. And Central New York newcomer Mighty Taco gets in on the bowl action with its “Bowlitos,’’ a.k.a. burrito bowls. Bowls are essentially one-dish meals that combine grains or starch (brown rice, quinoa, farro, rice noodles, pasta), greens and other vegetables, and meats and other proteins. Sometimes these ingredients are added to broth or piled on a base of grains or greens. Grain and green bowls are usually dressed lightly with a sauce or vinaigrette. For people who don’t like their foods to touch, bowls might not be the best choice. The multiple elements mingle to create a marriage of flavors and textures — and allow you to get all your food groups in the same place. Although we haven’t yet sampled Mighty Taco’s bowlitos, here are some other bowls we’ve enjoyed on our food travels in Central New York. Breakfast Bowl. Cold cereal in a bowl? That doesn’t cut it on a blustery, winter day. From a breakfast menu offering traditional fare like eggs, omelets, pancakes, French toast, corned beef hash and

Southwest grilled chicken and wild rice blend grain bowl from Core Greens, Grains and Bone Broth. Michael Davis photo

breakfast sandwiches, the Valley Inn’s breakfast bowl calls out to those in the mood for a comforting way to start the day. Valley Inn owner Jenn Valenti says the breakfast bowl ($7) started out as a special but proved to be so popular she added it to the regular menu. The bowl is built on a bed of tender home fries and includes scrambled eggs, crumbled sausage and bacon, melted cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream. Bowls are also offered as an occasional lunch special: Think mashed potatoes topped with corn, breaded and diced chicken cutlet and a pour of rich gravy. “The bowls are fun,’’ Valenti says. The Valley Inn is located at 2574 Cherry Valley Turnpike (Route 20), Marcellus. Call 673-7448 or visit facebook.com/ valleyinnrt20. Lunch/Supper Bowls. Everything comes in a bowl at Core Greens, Grains and Bone Broth, from slow-simmered bone (and vegetable) broths loaded with your choice of vegetables and grains to greens and grains bowls accessorized with whatever healthy ingredients you like. Favorites so far include the spicy ginger steak and rice noodle bowl with veggies (and bone broth) and the spicy chicken and ancient grains bowl, which is built around a scoop of warm quinoa and farro, plus layers of vegetables, chicken and a refreshing lime cilantro jalapeño dressing. Prices start at about $6. Next time, I’m due for a greens bowl. Core is at 7265 Buckley Road, North Syracuse, next to Chuck Hafner’s. Call 299-4451 or visit eatatcore.com. Pho. Steaming bowls of broth and noodles are a mainstay of Asian cuisine. Vietnamese pho (pronounced “fuh”), a flavorful, spice-scented, beef-based broth, can be ordered with meatballs, steak and brisket, or more exotic ingredients like tripe and tendon. New Century Vietnamese Restaurant’s No. 16 tai nam pho ($8.95) features slow-cooked beef broth plus ample quantities

of steak, brisket and thin rice noodles. Garnishes arrive on a separate plate and include lime wedges, sliced habanero pepper, a tangle of bean sprouts and sprigs of basil to sprinkle on top of the soup. Optional condiments include spicy sriracha sauce and a lightly sweet hoisin-style sauce. Warning: The pepper rings pack heat! Pho can be a sloppy affair. Wear your napkin, keep a couple more napkins handy and dive into the bowl with spoon in one hand and chopsticks in the other. Slurping is unavoidable. New Century is at 518 Kirkpatrick St., on the corner of Carbon Street. Call 410-9999 or visit newcenturyviet.com. Broth Bowls. Tired of the broccoli cheddar or vegetarian black bean soup? Panera Bread calls its broth bowls “filling bowls of global flavors.’’ What they are is loaded soups. Some of them are even healthy. The Lentil Quinoa Bowl with Chicken, for example, features sliced roasted chicken, quinoa and brown rice, lentils, tomato sofrito and fresh kale and spinach in a savory, mildly spicy broth, topped with a lemon wheel. A vegetarian version includes a cage-free egg instead of chicken. Panera has multiple locations in Central New York. Visit panerabread.com. Bowlitos. Not in the mood for a taco, burrito or Buffito (Buffalo-style chicken in a tortilla)? Hold the tortilla and grab a spoon. Buffalo-based Mighty Taco, with a just-opened outpost in Cicero, also offers “bowlitos’’: compact containers holding seasoned rice on the bottom, seasoned meat (or vegetarian option) in the middle and gooey nacho cheese on the top. Mighty Taco is at 911 N. Main St., Cicero. Call 214-5600 or visit mightytaco.com. SNT Margaret McCormick is a freelance writer and editor in Syracuse. She blogs about food at eatfirst.typepad.com. Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb.

Still Pickin’ and Grinnin’ Guitar greats Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb celebrate a new CD

L

By Jessica Novak

oren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb first met in 2005 when Mazengarb was still working toward his degree in classical guitar at the University of North Carolina. Barrigar had been playing since he was 4 years old, first performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville at age 6 (the youngest player to do so). But the meeting with Mazengarb sparked something new. The two met again in Nashville in 2009 at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) convention. Since then, they’ve worked their “way up the pecking order” as Barrigar says. Barrigar and Mazengarb now maintain a schedule that has them playing major theaters around the globe. This year they’ll hit Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, France and Germany. Their latest CD, One to One, mixes concert favorites with new originals. The duo will host a CD release party at Pensabene’s Casa Grande, 135 State Fair Blvd., on Thursday, Feb. 25, 7:30 p.m. (Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Visit lorenandmark.com for details.) Alex LaVon will join on upright bass with drummer Brendan O’Conner and Joe Davoli on fiddle. “We sell a lot of CDs, so some songs are favorites from the live show,” Barrigar says about One to One. “Then songs like ‘Coquette’ we play every night before we go on stage. We thought, ‘We love playing this. We should record it.’ Half are songs we do in the show, half are songs

2.24.16 - 3.1.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

we just really like. We’re not out to win a Grammy. We just like to have songs we really like playing from our heart.” “Your Song” by Elton John and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” by Stevie Wonder are on that list, and it shows through in the album performances. Barrigar and Mazengarb’s intricate guitar work is equally astounding technically as it is pulling emotionally, a difficult balance they seem to maintain naturally. Yet the album displays more than the duo’s usual effortless talent. Rather than record again locally at SubCat Studios, they traveled to Nashville’s Slack Key Studios, where Randy Kohrs, an accomplished writer and performer, now handles the studio side of the music business. “We’ve been poking around Nashville for the past four years,” Barrigar notes. “We thought we’d make some more inroads and connections in Nashville and do something different. There was no big plan, really, just that. It felt funny not doing it at SubCat because we have such a

great relationship there, but we talked to Jeremy (Johnston, an engineer at SubCat) and he said, ‘I think it would be really good for you to do.’” The duo recorded One to One in four sessions on Oct. 10 and 11, 2015. They also enlisted the help of several Nashville musicians, chosen through recommendations by fellow guitar masters Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith. “The names on the album are the names they came up with,” Barrigar says. Among them are Brad Albin on upright bass and drummer John McTigue. Fiddle player Tim Crouch came later. “We wanted fiddle, but the guys we were looking for weren’t available,” Barrigar says, so Kohrs recommended fiddler extraordinaire Crouch. “It turns out he records from home and we were flying right there in the next few days. So we stopped by his house and he’d run through a song three times in 10 minutes with three different parts and ask us to pick. They were all great.” The result is a fluid combination of guitar and fiddle mastery. “People listen to this, a guitar album, and say, ‘Who’s the fiddle player?’ He can play and play,” Barrigar says with a smile. The duo will also perform at a Folkus Project show on Friday, April 15, at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society. In June, they’ll head for Europe and their schedule will continue to accelerate throughout the fall when Mazengarb, who currently lives in New Zealand, is back for a longer period. “We play in bursts,” he says, “and we don’t really practice when we’re apart. Mark is so brilliant and young and quick; he said he didn’t play at all over six weeks when he got married. I have to keep my muscles trained. He doesn’t seem to have any trouble. If I put it down for a week now and then, I think I come back with a little more creativity or freshness. But when we’re on breaks like this, it comes out more. We take chances a little more.” Barrigar also says fans can expect new medleys, vocal songs and original music in the future. “Right now we’re about 25 percent to 30 percent vocals in a show,” he says. “People can only take so much guitar in a show, unless you’re Tommy Emmanuel. People can listen to him all night. I’m not a singer, so I have to be more of a storyteller. It has to be a story I really believe in. And Mark has been hitting some nice harmonies. We’re also working on new originals. There’s a strength in them we need to keep exploring. People like the feel and sound of the originals. We’re staying creative.” SNT

Inside Out.

OSCAR’S WILD FOR THIS YEAR’S RACE

The only sure thing at this year’s Academy Awards is how unsure everyone is when it comes to who’s gonna win. With the ongoing kerfuffle regarding people of color not getting nominations (host Chris Rock will have lots of material for his monologue), the race is more of a wideopen field, although recent momentum has declared The Revenant as the apparent front-runner. We’ll all find out on Sunday, Feb. 28, 8 p.m., when ABC affiliate WSYR-Channel 9 runs the marathon awards bash. So here are some predictions of the likely winners, but don’t bet the ranch on these selections, either. Best Picture: The Revenant has the late-in-game momentum, although the fact-based newspaper drama Spotlight, which has been kicking around for months, can’t be discounted. Best Director: Probably Alejandro Inarritu for The Revenant, making him a back-to-back Oscar winner following his Birdman triumph last year. George Miller could upset for the astonishing action epic Mad Max: Fury Road, but that seems unlikely. Best Animated Feature: Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out is the overwhelming favorite here. Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio will finally get his due with The Revenant.

Best Actress: Brie Larson’s demanding performance in Room will be hard to beat. Best Supporting Actor: Forty years ago Sylvester Stallone first took the Oscar stage for his career-defining boxing epic Rocky, so it’s perfect symmetry that he’ll get a sentimental trophy for his work in Creed. Best Supporting Actress: Late accolades have been going Alicia Vikander’s way for The Danish Girl, unless Jennifer Jason Leigh’s scene-stealing turn in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight becomes a spoiler. Best Original Score: A lock for The Hateful Eight’s musical maestro Ennio Morricone, king of the spaghetti western soundtracks. Best Cinematography: Going out on a limb here with Robert Richardson for The Hateful Eight, in which he used 70mm film stock instead of digital cameras to fulfill Tarantino’s cinematic dreams. Still, a win for The Revenant’s Emmanuel Lubezki would not be a surprise. Elsewhere, look for wins for Spotlight (Best Original Screenplay), The Big Short (Best Adapted Screenplay), the Amy Winehouse profile Amy (Best Documentary), Son of Saul (Best Foreign Film) and the Lady Gaga-Diane Warren song “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground (Best Original Song). Leo Rayhill’s Sounds of Jazz started at the former WQSR in April 1962, followed by other stints at WPAW and WHEN before TAKE finally settling at WCNY in 1971. He was feted at the Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest in 2004 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys) in 2009.

JAZZ HANDS FOR WCNY DJ LEO RAYHILL

“I swear he was drunk when he recorded this,” said Leo Rayhill as he listened to Turk Murphy and his San Francisco Jazz Band’s 1972 hit, “Saloon.” Conducting and singing along with Murphy in WCNY-FM 91.3’s recording studio, Rayhill grinned at his co-host, Jim Aroune, vice president of television and radio at WCNY. “You gotta love this one,” Rayhill said. “It’s my theme song.” Next came a hit from the 1980s, then the 1950s, and back to the 1970s. As WCNY continues its 50th anniversary celebration, Rayhill still conducts his Sounds of Jazz radio program the old-fashioned way: with CDs instead of digital files. On the desk beside his microphone, two smart Egon Ehrlinspiel shopping bags sit packed full of discs, and Rayhill handpicks his playlists on the fly. He hands his selections to Aroune with a “play track eight, it’s got a great swing to it,” or a “let’s hear the first one, she did this in one take.” Aroune, along for the ride, pops the discs into the player and keeps the energy in the room high between selections. Sounds of Jazz used to be live instead of recorded. From 1971 to 2009 it played five nights a week at dinnertime instead of just Sundays at 3 p.m. And until a year ago, Rayhill used to run the booth by himself. But times have changed: At 88, Rayhill is finally accepting a little help after more than 50 years on the radio. Every Thursday at 8:30 a.m., a nurse wheels Rayhill into the station — he lost the use of his legs due to illness earlier last year — and sets him up at the microphone facing the window to catch the morning sun. He dresses warmly; a faded blazer covers Rayhill’s frame and combats a slight chill in the booth. As soon as Aroune points to let him know they’re recording, Rayhill sits up straight. Brown eyes brighten behind his glasses. He announces each work without fanfare. Just a little detail or trivia about the recording or the performer, and then on to the music. But he has something to say about all of them, no matter when they were recorded.

Rayhill, a Utica native, has been with the station since the first day WCNY-FM went on the air, but his radio career began even earlier during his time at Hamilton College. “I had a big audience back then,” Rayhill said. “I think my mother listened every other week.” He made his living in the roofing business, but he went to jazz venues around Central New York with his father and developed a lifelong passion. After decades of listening to records and hanging out in clubs, Rayhill is an expert. Rayhill has a soft spot for early performers such as Glenn Miller, but he is also excited about where the genre is headed. “Young people are so much better educated in music and jazz improvisation than my generation was,” he said. “There’s some very brilliant young people going into it. The opportunities for them are so great.” Theo Cateforis, professor of music history at Syracuse University, said that jazz is achieving the same standing as classical music. “Jazz has reached a point where it is taken seriously as a conservatory-level genre,” Cateforis said. There has been a recent push in education to promote jazz as “American classical music,” he said. Because jazz developed parallel to the rise of recording technology, the genre matured at an accelerated rate compared to classical music. Even though it is a comparatively young genre, there is already a dichotomy between the standard favorites — the music of Duke Ellington or Miles Davis, for example — and the more avant-garde, experimental jazz of the 21st century. And Rayhill loves it all. “He is the keeper of jazz for all who could ever hear WCNY,” Aroune said. “Generations of people have recognized him as the person who can take them back to jazz’s infancy or what music in the genre sounds like today.”

2.24.16 - 3.1.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

During its many years Rayhill has interviewed some huge names for Sounds of Jazz. One of his favorites, Louis Armstrong, only intended to appear for a minute but stayed on the show for two hours. “Best interview I ever did. I don’t think I ever opened my mouth,” Rayhill said, laughing. “I learned a long time ago, if you get somebody like Louis Armstrong, Count Basie . . . that type that has something to say, you’re better off letting them talk. It’s much more interesting to the audience to say than to hear me! What have I got to say?” Rayhill has plenty to say: He’s keeping an eye on contemporary performers, some in jazz (“Well, I love Tony Bennett; he’s marvelous.”) and some otherwise (“People kid me, but I love Lady Gaga. I think she’s fantastic.”). Gene Romano, 87, a lifelong friend of Rayhill’s who grew up in the same Utica neighborhood, has appeared on Rayhill’s show several times. “He is well known for his contributions to music in the Central New York region,” Romano said. “I don’t know anybody that doesn’t love the guy once they meet him.” In addition to the FM programming, WCNY Public Media also offers an online streaming service, and one of the channels explicitly features jazz. Rayhill’s recorded voice broadcasts twice daily on the streaming service. As WCNY-FM celebrates its golden anniversary, Rayhill is a part of that history, said Aroune. “He’s part of the identity of WCNY radio,” he said. “He remains one of the foundational voices.” Because of his illness, Rayhill doesn’t make it to the clubs anymore, but that hasn’t deterred his love of jazz or his program in the slightest. “I live off my records and I live off my memories,” he said with a gentle smile. “And I love doing the shows! It’s been a big part of my life.” SNT

PUNK ROCK’S BLACKBOARD JUNGLE

The name of playwright Simon Stephens signals that Punk Rock is not a musical, despite the title. Stephens, better known for his many adaptations, like his 2015 Tony Award-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is a genuinely hot young property. Although he’s making an area premiere in this Syracuse University Drama Department production, readers of The New York Times will know him as the scribe most often championed by top critic Ben Brantley. Part of the reason to see this production is to see and hear what all the talk has been about. As the action begins we feel we might be coming upon a British version of The Breakfast Club. In the United Kingdom, class lines are always more visible. We’re in the library of Stockbridge School, which appears to charge high tuition but suffers from unprestigious geography. All the students are age 17 and in the equivalent of senior year. Not only are they facing the pressure of examinations, but each is deeply insecure about what is about to happen to them. When newcomer Lilly (the compelling Isabella Moore) lets on that her father had previously taught at Cambridge University, a palpable chill descends on the listeners. But she offers relief with cracks like, “They were rude, horrible pigs . . . really rich and stupid.” Although the seven principals may generally resemble figures from other teen dramas, such as the brainy nerd, the bully and the jock, just as happens in real-life high schools, Stephens invests each of them with individualizing, sometimes surprising, detail. We learn about all of this in dialogues that are longer and subtler than are found in many American dramas or movies. In this instance, Stephens is closer to Anton Chekhov than he is to John Hughes. Not one is the kind of character on whom we are supposed to pin our affections. We are detached, not rooting for anybody. Perhaps the most Chekhovian of them all is William (Cole Francum), who appears first. Stammering and nervous, he might be seeking approval in the way he chatters on. He can open people up,

Cole Francum and Justise Hayward in SU Drama’s Punk Rock. Michael Davis photos

however. In a lengthy dialogue with Lilly we learn that she cuts her arms where the scars don’t show. He lacks the pathos of a Chekhov loser, though. Only gradually do we realize that William’s more startling statements are not to be believed. Initially easier to understand are Bennett (Ezekial Edmonds), the boastful alpha dog, and his brainy but insensitive girlfriend Cissy (Bryn Dolan), who submits to him. Cissy’s more perceptive pal Tanya (Rose Gulant) sees what’s happening, but from insecurity over body issues clings to Cissy without complaint. Studious Chadwick (Justise Hayward) keeps his head down and tries to avoid conflict. Finally athlete Nicholas (Matthew Mueller) arrives late and stands apart. He does not dominate the girls, as cliché would have it, but he quietly has blocked William’s intentions for Lilly. Given that all the students wear uniforms (designed by Kiersten Kosbial) and do not take drugs, they might appear to be more pleasing to their parents than many American counterparts. If that were so, why is the play called Punk Rock? At intervals the bookcases in Robert John Andrusko’s set rotate while we hear sound designer Jonathan R. Herter’s blastings of several punk rock tracks as figures in fright costumes, the demonic, id-driven counterparts of the students, cavort in their same space. The music expresses all that has been unsaid. We know from early in the first act that something dreadful is coming, but we cannot name it. One of these kids is going to explode. It could be any of them. Each of the characters is united in tension, of which the most overt is between the sadistic Bennett and the intellectual Chadwick. As Bennett, musical theater major Ezekial Edmonds, last seen as Fred/Petruchio in Kiss Me Kate, has some of the hardest work to do. Fair-haired and slender, he’s not the swaggering

sadist from central casting. His bluster arises in part from a cover for doubts about his masculinity. Justise Hayward as Chadwick is the only black player in the company, apparently director Robert Moss’ decision and not prescribed in the text. William’s abuse never cites color. Chadwick would be set apart from the others even if he were not the only non-white. Always alone, he nonetheless has a sense of self, as shown in the ostentatious fur collar on his coat. He may look frightened when Bennett humiliates him, demanding money and smearing his mouth with lipstick. Chadwick gamely affects unconcern at his treatment but responds with a display of his erudition, a vision of the cosmos emphasizing everyone’s insignificance in it. Veteran director Moss, former head of Syracuse Stage, delivers some of his finest moments in the Bennett vs. Chadwick encounter. The predations of the strong over the weak might be commonplace on stage, but Moss reminds us that this one is anything but cliché. Both sides come with ambiguities, Bennett’s weaknesses on one hand and Chadwick’s reserves of self on the other. The scene ends with foreboding rather than resolution. The program for Punk Rock states that the show will be performed without intermission, but thankfully this is not true. Warnings of pistols being fired on stage, however, are justified. Events of the play are inspired by news stories you might have read about as well as by playwright Stephens’ time teaching in a school like Stockbridge. This production justifies Ben Brantley’s high opinion of the playwright. English school kids, in accents well-polished by dialect coach Celia Madeoy, use more considered language than ours do, and they don’t give everything away on top. SNT

DIVINE DOOFS IN SLEUTH SPOOF

You don’t have to know much about Bulldog Drummond to get a kick out of the fast-moving British-sounding spoof Bullshot Crummond, performed by Le Moyne College’s Boot and Buskin Theatre Club. Kind of a bridge character between the keenly observant Sherlock Holmes and the foreign intriguer Jason Bourne, Bulldog Drummond originated in English pulp fiction during World War I and flourished in a dozen-plus British and American movies from the 1920s to the 1960s. Drummond was usually portrayed by suave, self-confident actors like Ronald Colman, Ray Milland and Walter Pidgeon. But he is not identified with any single face, such as Basil Rathbone or Matt Damon. Bullshot Crummond focuses on the peak of Bulldog’s popularity, about 1930, when lingering paranoia from the First World War meant that villains should speak with German accents. Bullshot anticipates and still resembles Patrick Barlow’s The 39 Steps, a spoof of the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock movie that made a big splash at Syracuse Stage in October 2010. What we see here premiered in San Francisco in 1974, a collaboration of five writers most of us have never heard of before: Ron House, Diz White, John Neville-Andrews, Alan Sherman and Derek Cunningham. The nearly two-hour script calls for five players, some in multiple roles. So it appears each writer wrote his own role, each with a prime shtick, not unlike the Compleat Works farces on Shakespeare or American history. Action does not have to make sense, only to facilitate gag placement. The Compleat spoofs also originated within the orbit of San Francisco, albeit more than a decade later. What makes Bullshot different from its near relatives is its being defiantly low-tech. Birds shot from the air zoom down on shamelessly visible wires. In car chases both the pursued and the pursuers crouch behind painted, two-dimensional sheets of cardboard. What the quintet of authors and director Matt Chiorini are doing is not simply mocking the self-important shenanigans of a bygone pulp-adventure series but also the artistic pretension of the cinema itself. Not for nothing is each patron issued

1950s-style 3-D glasses upon entry. All those tricks that the camera enhances are deflated and exposed when recreated before our eyes. Set designer Karel Blakely has reconfigured the open Coyne Center stage with an ornate, gold proscenium to remind us we are being taken back in time. On a scrim Blakely projects title cards and posters from period Drummond movies, perhaps as generous mash notes. Action begins with a blurry black-and-white film of a biplane in trouble. Two passengers parachute to earth: bald-pated Otto Von Brunno (Jim Maxwell) and his diminutive daughter Lenya (Siobhan Shea) in lethal-looking spike heels. They are in pursuit of Professor Fenton, who has the formula for excellent artificial diamonds (not Zircons), which will help the father-daughter duo control the precious-gem market. The nasty Krauts shake around the white-wigged professor (Alex LeBlond) like a rag doll, so violently that we can barely make out the actor’s face. This is unmistakably director Chiorini’s plan: LeBlond will play nearly every supporting role. And even though he cuts a distinctive figure, the humor works better if it takes a minute to recognize him at each entrance. LeBlond makes the most of this, earning some of the best laughs when the script has not always been generous to his different roles. Such skullduggery as the Von Brunnos’ calls for the talents of Bullshot Crummond himself (Fred Pienkoski), with mustache, fedora and pipe. Directors of student productions always have to work with the troops who are already in the program, and they don’t take on a project unless they know they have the right people for the key roles. Pienkoski brings elements of Don Adams’ Maxwell Smart fused with Falstaff. The difficulty that director and actor face in creating this characterization is that Bullshot is a moving target. No easy-to-paro-

2.24.16 - 3.1.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

dy Sean Connery accent to spoof as with a younger James Bond. Instead the object is to mock Bullshot’s know-it-all superiority, his claim to brilliant perceptiveness of detail. Not to give away too much, but everyone in the audience will see red-hot clues that escape Bullshot’s attention. Because the original Bulldog Drummond was a man of action, a veteran of World War I bored with the peace, Pienkoski is called upon for quite a bit of physical comedy, once clenching a stick of dynamite in his teeth. That’s also why we need the 3-D glasses. The actor is a big guy capable of spinning around on a dime, or make that a sixpence. The script allows more physical comedy to male players but does not give the women as much to do. In one of his best scenes, Otto Von Brunno (Jim Maxwell) engages in shady dealings with an Italian gangster named Salvatore Scalicio (also Jim Maxwell). As Salvatore wears a black wig and red suspenders there’s a second or two where we don’t realize they’re the same players. When we do catch on, Chiorini has Otto and Salvatore conduct business behind a screen with teases that one or the other can be visible within seconds of each other. Tall, willowy Rachel Crumley as Rosemary Fenton, the scientist’s daughter, is stuck with some non-PC ditziness, more fitting of Benny Hill than the kind of Monte Pythonesque flavor of Bullshot. Honorably, she hits the mark with every line, never coming off as superior to them. Similarly, Siobhan Shea’s Lenya is a mean little witch, serving her lines with acid. Bullshot Crummond, made into a failed movie in 1983, is making an area premiere. It’s served live and fresh with Le Moyne College’s Boot and Buskin players. SNT

THIS NOTICE/DISCLOSURE IS FOR COMPLIANCE AND INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. HELP FOR HOMEOWERS IN FORECLOSURE New York State requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible op-

tions, including trying to work with our lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BankNYS or visit the Department`s website at www.banking.state. ny.us FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.

has a big enough throat to swallow a person whole: the sperm whale. If you happen to be sailing the high seas any time soon, I hope you will studiously avoid getting thrown overboard in the vicinity of one of these beasts. The odds are higher than usual that you’d end up in its belly, much like the biblical character Jonah. (Although, like him, I bet you’d ultimately escape.) Furthermore, Aries, I hope you will be cautious not to get swallowed up by anything else. It’s true that the coming weeks will be a good time to go on a retreat, to flee from the grind and take a break from the usual frenzy. But the best way to do that is to consciously choose the right circumstances rather than leave it to chance.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) You have cosmic clearance to fantasize about participating in orgies where you’re loose and free and exuberant. It’s probably not a good idea to attend a literal orgy, however. For the foreseeable future, all the cleansing revelry and cathartic rapture you need can be obtained through the wild stories and outrageous scenes that unfold in your imagination. Giving yourself the gift of pretend immersions in fertile chaos could recharge your spiritual batteries in just the right ways. GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) “Hell is the suffering of being unable to love,” wrote novelist J.D. Salinger. If that’s true, I’m pleased to announce that you can now ensure you’ll be free of hell for a very long time. The cosmic omens suggest that you have enormous power to expand your capacity for love. So get busy! Make it your intention to dissolve any unconscious blocks you might have about sharing your gifts and bestowing your blessings. Get rid of attitudes and behaviors that limit your generosity and compassion. Now is an excellent time to launch your “Perpetual Freedom from Hell” campaign! CANCER. (June 21-July 22) “A vacation is what

you take when you can no longer take what you’ve been taking,” said journalist Earl Wilson. Do you fit that description, Cancerian? Probably. I suspect it’s high time to find a polite way to flee your responsibilities, avoid your duties, and hide from your burdens. For the foreseeable future, you have a mandate to ignore what fills you with boredom. You have the right to avoid any involvement that makes life too damn complicated. And you have a holy obligation to rethink your relationship with any influence that weighs you down with menial obligations.

LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) “Your illusions are a

part of you like your bones and flesh and memory,” writes William Faulkner in his novel Absalom, Absalom! If that’s true, Leo, you now have a chance to be a miracle worker. In the coming weeks, you can summon the uncanny power to rip at least two of your illusions out by the roots -- without causing any permanent damage! You may temporarily feel a stinging sensation, but that will be a sign that healing is underway. Congratulations in advance for getting rid of the dead weight.

VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “We are defined by the lines we choose to cross or to be confined by,” says Virgo writer A.S. Byatt. That’s a key meditation for you as you enter a phase in which boundaries will be a major theme. During the next eight weeks, you will be continuously challenged to decide which people and things and ideas you want to be part of your world, and which you don’t. In some cases you’ll be wise to put up barriers and limit connection. In other cases, you’ll thrive by erasing borders and transcending divisions. The hard part -- and the fun part -- will be knowing which is which. Trust your gut. LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) When life gives

acacia, what should you do? Make lemonade, of course! You might wish that all the raw ingredients life sends your way would be pure and authentic, but sometimes the mix includes artificial stuff. No worries, Libra! I am confident that you have the imaginative chutzpah and resilient willpower necessary to turn the mishmash into passable nourishment. Or here’s another alternative: You could procrastinate for two weeks, when more of the available resources will be natural.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your Mythic

Metaphor for the coming weeks is dew. Many cultures have regarded it as a symbol of life-giving grace. In Kabbalah, divine dew seeps from the Tree of Life. In Chinese folklore, the lunar dew purifies vision and nurtures longevity. In the lore of ancient Greece, dew confers fertility. The Iroquois speak of the Great Dew Eagle, who drops healing moisture on land ravaged by evil spirits. The creator god of the Ashanti people created dew soon after making the sun, moon, and stars. Lao-Tse said it’s an emblem of the harmonious marriage between Earth and Heaven. So what will you do with the magic dew you’ll be blessed with?

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) It’s prime

time for you to love your memory, make vivid use of your memory, and enhance your memory. Here are some hints about how: 1. Feel appreciation for the way the old stories of your life form the core of your identity and self-image. 2. Draw on your recollections of the past to guide you in making decisions about the imminent future. 3. Notice everything you see with an intensified focus, because then you will remember it better, and that will come in handy quite soon. 4. Make up new memories that you wish had happened. Have fun creating scenes from an imagined past.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Most of us

know about Albert Einstein’s greatest idea: the general theory of relativity. It was one of the reasons he won a Nobel Prize in Physics. But what was his second-best discovery? Here’s what he said it was: adding an egg to the pot while he cooked his soup. That way, he could produce a soft-boiled egg without having to dirty a second pot. What are the first- and second-most fabulous ideas you’ve ever come up with, Capricorn? I suspect you are on the verge of producing new candidates to compete with them. If it’s OK with you, I will, at least temporarily, refer to you as a genius.

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may be familiar with the iconic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. It’s about a boy named Max who takes a dreamlike journey from his bedroom to an exotic island, where he becomes king of the weird beasts who live there. Author Maurice Sendak’s original title for the tale was Where the Wild Horses Are. But when his editor realized how inept Sendak was at drawing horses, she instructed him to come up with a title to match the kinds of creatures he could draw skillfully. That was a good idea. The book has sold more than 19 million copies. I think you may need to deal with a comparable issue, Aquarius. It’s wise to acknowledge one of your limitations, and then capitalize on the adjustments you’ve got to make. PISCES. (Feb. 19-March 20) “People don’t want their lives fixed,” proclaims Chuck Palahniuk in his novel Survivor. “Nobody wants their problems solved. Their dramas. Their distractions. Their stories resolved. Their messes cleaned up. Because what would they have left? Just the big scary unknown.” Your challenge in the coming weeks, Pisces, is to prove Palahniuk wrong, at least in regards to you. From what I can tell, you will have unprecedented opportunities to solve dilemmas and clean up messy situations. And if you take even partial advantage of this gift, you will not be plunged into the big scary unknown, but rather into a new phase of shaping your identity with crispness and clarity.
