Problem Solved

Walking faster could save 5,592 lives if a major tsunami hit the Pacific Northwest, according to geographers reporting in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They estimated that 21,562 residents of coastal communities in Oregon, Washington and Northern California would not make it to safety walking at 2.5 mph. But walking at 3.5 mph would drop the death toll to 15,970.

Frack Attack

Oil tycoon Harold Hamm, the founder of Oklahoma City-based Continental Resources, told a University of Oklahoma dean that he wanted certain scientists there dismissed because they were studying links between oil and gas activity in the state and the nearly 400-fold increase in earthquakes.

Wrong Arm of the Law

The city manager and the police chief of Whitehouse, Texas, were suspended, along with three other police officers, in an incident that began when City Manager Kevin Huckabee and visibly intoxicated Chief Craig Shelton visited the estranged wife of Officer Shawn Johnson.

Shelton made sexual advances toward her but then came to his senses and left.

Jessica Johnson called her husband about the incident. He arrived just before Shelton returned and proceeded to beat him up. Shelton texted Shawn Johnson, threatening his job, but he inadvertently sent the message to most, if not all, of the police force. Johnson was suspended, as were two other officers who reported the events to other law enforcement agencies.

I

’ll try to plow through this column without mentioning that presidential candidate everyone is talking about. And no, I don’t mean John Kasich.

It’s nothing personal. I just don’t want to anger the unnamed candidate’s supporters who are already plenty angry — and with good reason. They’re angry because the United States has the planet’s No. 1 gross domestic product and the second highest percentage of college graduates, and because we lead the world in people who believe angels are real.

Wait, why is everyone so angry again? It doesn’t matter. All you need to know is that millions of us are furious, which makes it tempting for some to embrace an all-powerful leader who promises to swaddle us in the blanket of awesomeness we enjoyed in the decades after World War II. Back then, America had no worries except for Valium addiction and the constant threat of thermonuclear annihilation.

Naturally, it’s tempting to want to turn back the clock to those days—unless you’re a minority or gay person (gay people did not technically exist then) or you find the idea of sharing your phone line with another family weird.

The candidate everyone is talking about speaks to these yearnings. He makes us feel as if we’re being invited to the ultimate 1950s theme party, with unlimited turkey tetrazzini, a Rob Roy waterfall and a special guest appearance by the McGuire Sisters. The

coolest part is knowing that the party is off-limits to all the riffraff: the U.S. Constitution, actual facts and fat, ugly losers who whine that the host is a fraud.

But here’s where it gets tricky, especially if you don’t pay much attention to politics — which is roughly 70 percent of America, according to most surveys. A supreme leader who answers only to himself is something known as — feel free to jot this down for future reference — “a dictator.” Generally speaking, dictators are “bad.”

Now, by bad I don’t mean they use the wrong email server or sign off on an imperfect health care bill.

By bad I mean imprisoning and executing political enemies, muzzling the press and falsely clamining to have been attacked by defenseless neighboring countries.

A typical day for a dictator will begin with a lengthy grooming session, followed by a light breakfast and a declaration of war. Other activities might include attending the execution of a top aide and spending some quality time with a newly kidnapped sex partner.

More days than not, you’ll get a blistering State of the Nation address that sounds disturbingly like County Executive Joanie Mahoney’s March 1 speech.

Granted, once in a while, a dictator comes along

who is to absolute rule what Keanu Reeves is to acting. You can tolerate him for a few hours, but after that you start stuffing Raisinettes into your ear canals.

Another strand of dictator provides a service of sorts by keeping rival ethnic groups from killing one other. Trouble is, the dictator accomplishes this by routinely massacring members of ethnic groups that he does not belong to. With civil war averted, the country can re-focus on the endless task of erecting monuments bearing the flattering image of the dictator. It is a non-debatable point that the dictator’s penis is exceptionally large.

And these are the “good” dictators. The bad ones suck way worse. A common mistake people make is believing that if they support a dictator, they will be inoculated from his wrath. Sorry, Gov. Christie, but it rarely works that way.

Adolf Hitler (Google him!) ordered the assassination of the leader of his beloved Brown Shirts, a group of paramilitary thugs. It just felt right. Kim Jong-un of North Korea executes so many members of his inner circle that it’s almost insulting to be spared. He had his own uncle put down and, after that, his defense chief, Hyon Yong-chol, for falling asleep during a military rally. Looks like Yong-chol picked the wrong time to cut back on the official soft drink of North Korea: Mountain Jong, Code Red. So, here’s the deal: If you must vote for the candidate in question, that’s your choice. Just know the potential consequences. Attractive as it sounds, life under a fear-mongering egomaniac serial liar with anger management and impulse control issues probably won’t be all it’s cracked up to be.

Orange Women Are In: While the Syracuse men’s basketball team will be sweating it out this week, the women’s team (25-7) is TAKE guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Tournament and a likely high seed after reaching the finals of the ACC Tournament before losing to No. 2 Notre Dame.

BUBBLE TROUBLE FOR SU’S NCAA BID

When the Syracuse University men’s basketball team didn’t make the NCAA Tournament last season, you could definitely say the Orange had no one to blame but themselves. And if SU misses again this year, you could probably say the same thing.

By losing four of its last five Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season games, including the disappointing 78-73 loss at Florida State on Saturday, March 5, the Orange (19-12 overall, 9-9 in the ACC) put itself squarely on the bubble for a NCAA Tournament bid. To get in now, the Orange will have to defeat nemesis Pittsburgh (20-10, 9-9) in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, March 9, noon, or get a lot of help from other bubble teams.

If the Orange doesn’t make it, it’ll be just the third time SU has missed the tournament in back-to-back seasons since the Orange started playing in the Carrier Dome in 1980-1981. Last season, amid an NCAA investigation into violations committed by the program, Syracuse self-imposed a ban in early February that prevented the Orange from participating in any post-season tournament.

It appeared this year’s team was headed for the National Invitation Tournament following a 0-4 start in ACC play that dropped the team’s overall record to 10-7.

But Coach Jim Boeheim returned after an NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension as one of the penalties for the violations, and the Orange rattled off eight wins in nine

Sitting at 18-8 and 8-5 in the ACC in mid-February, SU looked like a shoo-in for the NCAA Tournament. But the four losses in five games, including a home loss to Pitt and the road loss to a Florida State team that SU defeated by 13 points earlier in the month turned this Wednesday’s game into a must-win and left Boeheim in no mood to speculate about the Orange’s tournament chances.

“No, I’m not going to talk about it,” Boeheim said when asked after the Florida State game for his opinion on whether SU would make the tournament. “What good would that do? My opinion is that the selection committee will have to determine who the best teams are in the country. They’ve got 30 games already and then they’ll have the tournament also. They’ll have

to make that judgment. That’s my opinion. But it’s no answer, because I’m not going to answer it.”

ESPN bracket expert Joe Lunardi gets paid to give his opinion, and earlier this week he had Syracuse and Pittsburgh among his four bubble teams. If he’s right, that means the winner of Wednesday’s game is in, and the loser is likely out.

Bracket Matrix is an outfit that tracks 66 published NCAA Tournament brackets and aggregates the seeds to come up with a consensus tournament field. Earlier this week, Bracket Matrix had both Syracuse and Pitt in the tournament — Pitt as a No. 9 seed and the Orange as a No. 10 seed — which also points to Wednesday’s game as a tiebreaker.

shot downed Pitt in February 2013. Or, in Syracuse’s favor, it’s really difficult to beat a team three times in the same season.

In both games this season, the Panthers stormed past the Orange late in the game. In their first meeting Dec. 30 in Pittsburgh, the Orange led 59-58 with 3:54 left, but the Panthers outscored the Orange 14-2 down the stretch for a 72-61 win.

On Feb. 20 at the Carrier Dome, the score was tied at 45 with 7:15 remaining, but Pitt held SU’s offense without a field goal for the next six minutes and cruised to a 66-52 win. The Orange shot just 37.3 percent in that game (26.9 percent on 3-pointers) and was outrebounded 43-23.

“The difference really was they made some offensive plays down the stretch,” Orange point guard Michael Gbinije said after the second Pitt game. “Offensively, we gave up too many opportunities, couldn’t get to the basket at times.”

It was following that game that Boeheim

criticized Orange forward Tyler Roberson, the team’s best rebounder who managed just four rebounds and no points in 25 minutes. “If I had anyone else,” Boeheim said, “he wouldn’t play a minute.”

Roberson has played better since then, and the Orange frontcourt (Roberson, center DaJuan Coleman and forward Tyler Lydon) will have to man up Wednesday against Pitt’s veteran big men who are known for their physicality. It would also help Syracuse’s cause if Trevor Cooney and Malachi Richardson broke out of their late-season shooting slumps. And SU might want to cut down on those turnovers, too.

If the Orange gets past Pittsburgh, it will face the ACC Tournament’s No. 1 seed, North Carolina, at noon on Thursday, March 10, in the quarterfinal round. But by that point, the heavy lifting will have already been done and the Orange will be spending Selection Sunday on March 13 wondering where, not if, they’re going in the NCAA Tournament. SNT

The cavernous Central New York Hub for Emerging Nano Industries at DeWitt’s Collamer Crossings filled quickly to standing room only March 1 as more than 300 gathered to hear Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney deliver her ninth State of the County address. In introducing Mahoney, 5th District County Legislator Kathy Rapp noted that after 25 years in government she had learned that well-behaved women seldom make history, an observation that drew only scattered applause.

For Mahoney, the site of the speech stood as a symbol of potential for the county’s most exciting new economic activity. “Growing up, the movie Slap Shot was filmed here (in 1976),” she noted, “and we talked about it for years because it was so rare. Now we have an almost constant filmmaking presence with the Film House studio as a permanent tenant here in the hub.”

She cited the budget of Film House’s American Dresser, shot here, as an example of that potential. That budget included more than $100,000 for hotel rooms, more than $120,000 to rent cars and RVs, and $500,000 local payroll for labor, crew and extras.

Mahoney played a trailer for the movie, noting images of several local landmarks, including county film commissioner Eric Vinal’s mother’s house. A more visible economic boost was attributed to the soonto-open Marriott Syracuse Downtown (the former Hotel Syracuse), which the county has designated as the official Pirro Convention Center hotel. Mahoney credited a former Syracuse New Times staffer, Deputy County Executive Bill Fisher, with living every detail of the renovation for two years.

Mahoney emphasized that from a fiscal perspective the state of the county was strong. “We ended 2015 with a surplus of $11.5 million,” she observed, “thanks mostly to lower state mandates.” She added that last year also witnessed a historic reduction in property tax rates.

References to an advantageous relationship with Gov. Andrew Cuomo included: “I was happy to hear after we hosted Gov. Cuomo’s cabinet here last fall that he plans to bring his fishing tournament to Onondaga Lake this summer.”

Mahoney admitted, however, “There is another side to the coin, and this year we also heard a troubling report about how our successes are not yet being shared by everyone. Onondaga County still suffers with some of the highest concentrations of poverty among African-Americans and Latinos. We very much live in a segregated community.”

An inevitable focus on the Consensus report, exploring consolidation between city and county government, launched Mahoney into a historical journey on the subject, from Gov. Al Smith in the 1920s to an actual merger of the city and county’s purchasing departments in 2011.

She cited a common councilor who expressed hostility to a proposed referendum on metropolitan government, proposing at least 18 months of discussion. “I have sobering news for you, councilor,” she chided, “we’ve actually been debating it since before you were born.”

After the speech, the councilor — Khalid Bey, representing the 4th District — responded that his timeline resulted from the 51 proposals of the Consensus panel.

“This effort is not people-driven,” he maintained. “It’s political-driven, and the people are searching for answers.”

Afterward, Mahoney referred to comments from the councilor over the past several weeks, at virtually every one of the Consensus public hearings. “It’s completely untrue,” she said, “that this is a conflict between the governor and the (city of Syracuse) mayor (Stephanie Miner). He needs to get away from the personalities. If he’s waiting for a time when all the politicians are getting along to resolve this, it will never happen.” SNT

March came in like a lion last week. But that didn’t stop the owners-operators of the Chicken Bandit and PB&J’s Lunch Box from setting up their respective food truck and food trailer outside Eastwood’s Palace Theatre on James Street to feed Friday night’s Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys) crowd.

On Saturday, Toss ‘n’ Fire operator Nick Sanford dragged his mobile, wood-fired pizza oven from Cicero to Syracuse to sling his signature hand-tossed Neapolitan pizzas at a beer release party at the newly opened Willow Rock Brewing Company, off Ainsley Drive.

March weather is too unpredictable to venture out on a regular basis, but Sanford was excited to kick-start the food truck season. “We decided why not?

We’ll just be a little cold.’’

George Shattuck, who operates Shattuck’s Paddy Wagon, is dusting off his shamrock-festooned trailer for St. Patrick’s Parade Day at the Cosmopolitan Building, 1153 W. Fayette St., on Saturday, March 12, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The $10 admission at the door gets you entertainment by 10 bands (courtesy of L.R.S. Records). For an extra charge, you can get a sneak preview of the Cosmopolitan beers being made on site by the Stout Beard Brewing Company (currently a distribution-only brewery; a tasting room is in the works) and food by the Paddy Wagon, including Shattuck’s signature sriracha tater tots.

Last year, local food truck operators joined forces to form the Syracuse Food Truck Association and organize regular gatherings and locations. The Cosmopolitan Building, owned by Cosmo Fedrizzi, was the site of weekly “food truck rodeos’’ during the spring and summer, but those aren’t on the agenda for this year.

“The plan this year is to host events like you see for the parade day,” Shattuck said via email. “It is up in the air as to doing rodeos on a weekly basis, more likely we will bring food trucks as per event. Cosmo and I are thinking about some other ideas, such as guest chefs in my food trailer and pop-up food events.’’

of PB&J’s Lunch Box are looking ahead to a full season of food truck rodeos at the Lyncourt Plaza, 2301 Teall Ave. They, along with the Stir Mobile Eatery and hopefully a couple others, have permission from the town of Salina to set up on Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., from April to October.

The off-season has been productive. In February, Orr took over the tiny restaurant space at 989 James St., in the Imperial Gardens apartment building, to open a “brick and mortar’’ location called PB&J’s Lunch Box on James. The spot that formerly housed Stevie’s Street Eats and later Paul’s Street Eats has been painted, freshened and reconfigured slightly to create better flow and more efficient use of space in the kitchen and counter area.

The focal point of the seating area, which has room for about 12, is a giant chalkboard menu.

Joining Orr is head chef and kitchen manager Kelly Robertson.

The standing menu includes “everyday favorites’’ like Orr’s award-winning grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich and muffuletta and turkey club sandwiches. Grilled cheese devotees will find a “huge” grilled cheese made with American and cheddar cheeses and an always changing “grilled cheese of the day,” as well as specials like blackened haddock tacos (a recent Friday special) and quesadillas.

The Lunch Box is open Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with breakfast sandwiches, homemade muffins and coffee in the morning and early-bird supper offerings later in the day.

New this season at Toss ‘n’ Fire is a second pizza rig, an enclosed trailer that will be used at festivals, markets and other events and will extend the season for Sanford and his crew. The rig arrived just before last Saturday’s collaboration with Willow Rock Brewery.

Toss ‘n’ Fire is noted for its Neapolitan-style pizzas, built on a thin crust made with flour imported from Italy. Sanford has been working on new offerings, including a white clam pizza with bacon, garlic and olive oil that will show up on his menu this season along with “greatest hits’’ like the Margherita pizza, Fig ‘n’ Pig and ‘Cuse Salt Potato pizza.

The Chicken Bandit will be back at its downtown spot, near Armory Square’s Museum of Science and Technology, in addition to the weekly food truck rodeos and a variety of special events. Cindy Baker has been working on new menu items such as chicken and biscuits and chicken chili. “Cindy cooks and tries new things out . . . I eat,’’ partner Dennis Souva says of the off-season.

s Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Joanne Shenandoah faces a life-threatening illness, she looks to her Native American heritage to describe her place in the universe.

“We flow, as does the cycle of creation, from conception to birth, infancy to youth and adulthood to our elder years,” she said this week via email through her husband, Doug GeorgeKanentiio. “While our physical selves are mortal we take the collective essence of our lives into the next reality and the ones beyond that to infinity.”

Shenandoah, 58, whose words and music call for justice, peace and respect for indigenous traditions, is awaiting a liver transplant after a bacterial infection last summer caused irreparable damage. Her family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for medical bills, estimated to be at least $450,000. As of Thursday, supporters had donated $31,935.

Shenandoah, 58, is a member of the Wolf Clan of the Oneida Nation. She lives in Oneida Castle with her husband GeorgeKanentiio, a member of the Mohawk Nation. Shenandoah, whose name in Oneida means “She Sings,” won a Grammy in

the best Native American Music Album category in 2006 for her part in Sacred Ground: A Tribute to Mother Earth, a compilation album. She was also nominated for Grammy Awards in 2001 and 2005.

She has also received 14 Native American Music Awards — more than any other artist. “Native American music is very important for our survival: It has allowed Native people to survive,” Shenandoah told MTV in 2001. “You really don’t have to understand the words.”

Shenandoah hopes to receive a liver transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. She is limiting her activity, and said last week she was not up to speaking with a reporter. “Overall, Jo is stable,” George-Kanentiio said.

How does your illness fit with your understanding of the life cycle? What can we all learn from physical frailty?

While our physical selves are mortal, we take the collective essence of our lives into the next reality and the ones beyond that to infinity. Discarding the body is inevitable, but the gift of life carries on.

I am not apprehensive about my life, as who I am and what I have done will be carried with me when I return home along the star path. My ancestors will journey with me. Those whom I have felt are with me now. This is our ancestral teaching.

We have instructions, one of which is to take care of our health so we can live in happiness and fulfill our duties as human beings.

Many find solace and healing in your music. What’s it like to receive, rather than give, solace and healing?

Native spiritual leaders guided me to my life’s mission, which is to use music as a healing power, to carry songs that expressed our love for the natural world.

Music can be one way by which humans communicate with other species and show our respect, dependency and admiration for this beautiful planet.

It is no mere chance that my music is sung within the universal keys that mark the rhythms of sun, moon and Earth.

In this time of challenge, I have been amazed by how many people have shown that they do care for my well-being and this gives me a chance to express my gratitude. I find comfort in this.

It is our Iroquois way to call out when in need, as it gives our families and friends an opportunity to learn and to share, to use our collective powers to effect healing. The Haudenosaunee is an alliance created through the healing power of music, and without song and dance we could not live. My illness, during the dreamtime of winter, gives me an opportunity to reflect on this.

What do you make of the response to your illness?

It teaches me that there is great goodness in most people. It also has shown me that our connection with each other is the most powerful force in a human being’s life, that we need to show our love for others during times of stress.

For many, reacting to illness provides an opportunity to place life itself in perspective, to realize that love is more than a desire but an emotion that can best flourish when it is nurtured. True love is rooted in respect and sensitivity. Sometimes it is watered in tears, but it does not fade or diminish. It is what we carry to the next world. My music removes fear and relieves sadness. That is what my family and friends have done for me.

What song or phrase or prayer keeps you going during this difficult time?

I like “Aiionwatha Forgives” from my Peacemaker’s Journey album (2000) as it tells how one man, crippled by grief, overcame this and thereby helped create the Haudenosaunee, the world’s first united nations. In those moments, when he put aside vengeance and hatred, he showed all human beings that peace and healing is possible in the most tragic of circumstances.

SAMMYS SHEBANGS SHOOK, RATTLED AND ROLLED

T

he bold electric guitar work of Savoy Brown’s Kim Simmonds spoke loud and clear on the 1971 hit “Street Corner Talking” and Jam Factory answered back with a chunky, funky “Talk is Cheap.”

But there was nothing cut-rate about the 2016 Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys). In fact, the 18th edition of the Sammys since 1993 drew an audience of more than 750 to Eastwood’s Palace Theatre on Friday, March 4, as the crowd saw 15 trophies awarded to area recording artists and heard five stirring performances, including those by 2016 Sammy Hall of Famers Savoy Brown and Jam Factory.

Kim Simmonds, the Welsh-born bluesman who started Savoy Brown in London in 1965, now employs a top-flight Syracuse rhythm section including bassist Pat DeSalvo and drummer Garnet Grimm.

The British guitar god, who now lives near Oswego, reminisced about the days before electric string-tuners. While the battery-powered gizmos consistently keep contemporary bands on key, Simmonds mused, “Today we’re all too in tune for our own good.”

Award was bestowed posthumously to bebop vocalist Mark Murphy, who died last October at age 83.

Guitarist Mark Copani was named Music Educator of the Year. As Copani accepted his trophy, he thanked the Mario DeSantis Orchestra for keeping him on the bandstand even during his recent struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Copani’s not the only local musician with medical concerns. Carolyn Kelly, whose blues band kicked off the entertainment Friday, is facing surgery to remove polyps from her vocal cords. At the Sammys, however, she sang with power and passion belying her diagnosis. Backed by guitarists Terry Mulhauser and Todd Fitzsimmons, bassist Jim Pavente and drummer Don Sollars, Kelly paid soaring tribute to her late mentor, Roosevelt Dean, by singing his composition, “Somebody Told Me.” Sammys Hall of Famer Dan Elliott also has health problems. He’s fighting a serious form of cancer, but the lead singer of The Montereys appeared — albeit hairless — to help present the Best Americana award.

When Elliott acknowledged the warm applause, he

said simply, “It’s good to be here.” But it seemed to mean so much more.

Several of the earliest Sammys suffered that perennial bane of award programs: They dragged on and on and on. Not this one. Irrepressible emcee Skip Murphy and the production staff kept things running smoothly all evening, with nary a moment of dead air amid the seamless pacing. Complaints about sound levels, notably in 2014, bore no repeating here.

Both the mixes and the rear-projection visuals were top-notch.

Two up-and-coming acts effectively showcased their budding talents. Hip-hop songwriter Joe Driscoll looped and lipped to mimic a deejay scratching, while heavy metal band Ohne-Ka and the Burning River cranked out power chords that shook the Palace to its core.

Occasional awkward situations arose.

For instance, people who stepped on stage to accept awards were poorly introduced, so the audience had no idea which band member was speaking. In the case of a winner unable to appear at the show — such as Josh Dekaney, honored for Best Recording Other Style — the woman who accepted the award in his place was never identified, as she conveyed Dekaney’s thanks to several collaborators.

Also missing were the titles of the nominated discs. In June 2004, after a three-year absence, the Sammys were resurrected at the Taste of Syracuse, when the awards’ popular-vote system was replaced by a committee of judges assigned to assess regional recordings. That being the case, the Sammys’ printed program and its backstage screen should definitely list the titles of nominated CDs, or at least the winning discs.

One other complaint: The Hall of Fame induction desperately needs some live music to enliven the evening. Thank God for the Bells of Harmony! The venerable gospel group of Floyd Hawes, John Carter and Charles, Keith and Kelvin Cannon, which has been singing praises to the lord here for a half-century, saved the day with their rousing a cappella version of “We’ve Come This Far by Faith.”

You might say the same for the Sammys. Liz Nowak, who has chaired the Sammys Committee since 2009, was especially encouraged by the diverse mix of nominees and performers.

“The Hall of Fame induction was touching,” she said, “and we’re honored to honor lifetimes of dedication to their art. Then Friday was a blast with so many new and familiar faces. We couldn’t be happier with our growing music scene of exceptional talents.” SNT

MARCHING MADNESS Channel 9’s Tim Fox recalls the station’s 30-plus years of St. Patrick’s Parade broadcasts

he late Channel 9 newslady Nancy Duffy once had a crazy idea about a St. Patrick’s Parade that would actually march through downtown Syracuse in the middle of March — hardly the time of year when snow-fatigued, windchilled Central New Yorkers would actually witness such an event. Yet the parade’s debut in 1983 was truly the start of something big, as the small-scale march quickly snowballed into one of the area’s biggest attractions, luring thousands to South Salina Street during its 33-year history.

Duffy cajoled her station into broadcasting the third parade in 1985, and longtime producer-reporter Tim Fox has been part of that show ever since.

WSYR-Channel 9 will air the three-hour parade, co-hosted by Carrie Lazarus and Dan Cummings, on Saturday, March 12, noon, with a repeat later that night at 11:30 p.m. WSYR’s 9.2 digital channel will also offer a same-day rebroadcast at 7 p.m. Fox fondly recalls the early years of the parade broadcast: “The parade was small the first couple of years.

It was still a grassroots effort. And Nancy just kept chipping away at general manager Steve Kronquest, who saw some potential in the broadcast, and to get some sponsors to pay for the production costs.

“In the beginning, we took a look at what resources we could marshal and how we could best cover what was then an awkward parade route. I think it used to start south of the Onondaga County War Memorial in the empty lots over where the Pirro Convention Center is now, and march around Columbus Circle, where I was stationed by the courthouse, and then out into downtown. They might have dispersed around Armory Square, which had more open lots back then.

And the route changed every year in the first few years. By the fourth or fifth year the parade got over to Salina Street, and has stayed there ever since.

“During one early broadcast, we had a photographer who saw a horse raise its tail during the march and he thought it was a good time to zoom in. It was not a good time to zoom in. He learned that very quickly.

“Nancy got whatever she could marshal to put into the parade. She got an Irish jaunting cart from Dunk and Bright furniture and put Salty Sam (former radio and television announcer Will Lape) in that, and that was a big float in the first year. She always told the story about when people would ask where they were supposed to line up, and she said, ‘Just look for the man with the big green hat. And go out and find a big green hat. And a man to put under it.’

“So it was a little loosely organized during the first couple of years. Everything in the parade was whoever Nancy could buttonhole into showing up. She got

the Irish Potato Ladies; they were administrative assistants around downtown that she had known while covering the courthouse, and they were involved with the parade for 30-plus years.

“We have eight cameras and a crew of more than two dozen for this year’s broadcast, but it probably wasn’t a lot less (personnel) in the early broadcasts because we were trying to invent things as we went along. This was a big undertaking for the station. We didn’t have cell phones back then, so we had walkie-talkies (to coordinate the broadcast) and we had a phone line installed at Hotel Syracuse. We also used the production truck from TLC ambulance’s video service, we’ve worked closely with Cortland High School’s video club and we’ve rented trucks from Time Warner Cable.

“For the parade broadcasts, we usually start gathering profile pieces when the officials make the grand marshal announcement. I recently put together a piece on Joe O’Hara, this year’s grand marshal. And last year we used a backpack transmitter that works off cell phone signals, which gives us more freedom than when we were tethered to a live TV truck that was stationed at Clinton Square. Now this backpack unit allows us more mobility to get upstairs at Sky Armory and up and down the parade route.

“The parade has never been canceled. The biggest challenge was in 1992, the year of the Gumby balloon, and you could barely see it because of the snow.

They brought Gumby back in 1995 so people could actually see him. It has been snowy, rainy, cloudy and very sunny, so we’ve seen every possible weather condition except below-zero conditions.

“Nancy used to call people at the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and parades all across the country to find out how they organized the line of march. The Rose Parade was very specific regarding how many paces per minute.

And that’s all fine until the temperatures dip below 30 degrees, then forget it. When it’s chilly, you’d be amazed how fast a three-hour parade can move through.” SNT

SECRETS AND LIES IN SHEPARD SATIRE

“I miss the cold war.” The black absurdity of such a line, swaddled in faux nostalgia, sounds like something from Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 movie Dr. Stangelove. Instead it is from a late short work of Sam Shepard, The God of Hell (2004).

One of America’s most admired contemporary playwrights, known for Buried Child and Tooth of Crime, Shepard has not been well-served recently by local stages. Living up to its name, Rarely Done Productions introduces us to Shepard’s previously unseen dark satire with its edgy wit.

We quickly discern that Welch’s pursuit, as a kind of Rotarian Jvert, means he’s from the “government” and he knows everybody’s secrets. None of this should imply that Shepard is lining up with the libertarian nutcases, like the Bundy family and others who recently occupied an ecology station in Oregon. God of Hell premiered in late 2004, after President George W. Bush’s second electoral victory, when voices asking if the invasion of Iraq was really in the national interest were labeled “surrender monkeys” or, worse, “French.”

C.J. Young, longtime artistic head of Appleseed Productions, has assembled a bang-up cast for this explosive show.

Young clearly relishes the more intimate space at Jazz Central in guiding David Simmons’ subtle, nuanced Haynes, the anguished existential anti-hero. Young and Simmons assure us that Haynes is the only character we can believe but they never push him so far as to make us think he isn’t guilty of something.

Justin Bird as the government man seems to be having the most fun. His villain gets most of the laughs, even though the lines aren’t that great on paper.

Heather Roach, one of the most versatile performers we have, never plays down Emma but allows her a kind of Yogi Berra wisdom; she’s much smarter than she first sounds. Similarly, Trevor F. Hill’s Frank is full of surprises. Welch dismisses him as a “useless lumberjack,” but he’s the one who misses the Cold War. The God of Hell runs a little under 70 minutes. Every second crackles with energy. SNT

Those who participate do 3,100 miles’ worth of laps around a single city block, or about 100 laps per day. I think that this is an apt metaphor for the work you now have ahead of you. You must cover a lot of ground as you accomplish a big project, but without traveling far and wide. Your task is to be dogged and persistent as you do a little at a time, never risking exhaustion, always pacing yourself.

LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “Your anger is a

gift.” So proclaims musician and activist Zack de la Rocha, singer in the band Rage Against the Machine. That statement is true for him on at least two levels. His fury about the systemic corruption that infects American politics has roused him to create many successful songs and enabled him to earn a very good living. I don’t think anger is always a gift for all of us, however. Too often, especially when it’s motivated by petty issues, it’s a self-indulgent waste of energy that can literally make us sick. Having said that, I do suspect that your anger in the coming week will be more like de la Rocha’s: productive, clarifying, healthy.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “Even now, all possible feelings do not yet exist,” says novelist Nicole Krauss. In the coming weeks, I suspect you will provide vivid evidence of her declaration, Scorpio.
