Adam Hirtle, 30, told police in Colorado Springs, Colo., that he removed his boot and shot himself in the foot on purpose because he wanted to see how it felt. After satisfying his curiosity, he “placed his boot back on his foot and then intentionally shot himself in the foot” a second time, police said. (The Denver Post)

Litigation Nation

James Brickman filed a lawsuit against Fitbit, claiming that his wrist-worn Fitbit Flex “consistently overestimated sleep by 67 minutes per night.” The suit, filed in a San Francisco federal court, accused the company of misleading consumers by touting that its gadgets present “exact” sleep data. “Thinking you are sleeping up to 67 minutes more than you actually are can obviously cause health consequences,

especially over the long term,” the lawsuit states. Fitbit insisted the suit has no merit, pointing out, “Fitbit trackers are not intended to be scientific or medical devices, but are designed (to help users) reach their health and fitness goals.” (Britain’s Daily Mail)

Corpse Follies

Melanie Nash, 53, admitted smashing the concrete vault that held her father’s corpse, along with three other people, and rifling through the casket in search of his “real will” because she felt she hadn’t received her proper inheritance. Instead, she found only vodka and cigarettes. Police in Colebrook, N.H., discovered the crime the next day when a patrolman reported “the gravesite of Eddie Nash did not look right.” Judge Peter Bornstein said when he sentenced Nash to 1 ½ to three years in prison, “That is the understatement of the century.” (Associated Press)

Zigging the Zags: Syracuse and Gonzaga have met just once, in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. In the second round in TAKE Buffalo, Wes Johnson had 31 points and 14 rebounds as the Orange routed the Bulldogs, 87-65.

SWEET SUCCESS FOR BOTH SU HOOPS SQUADS

F

ollowing the Syracuse University men’s basketball team’s March 18 win over Dayton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Orange fifth-year seniors Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney were asked if the victory was especially satisfying because so many college basketball pundits said SU didn’t belong in the tournament. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim jumped in before they could answer. “Nobody that said we didn’t deserve (to be) in knows anything about basketball, so we didn’t think about it,” Boeheim said, mixing his pronouns but you get the point. “They were just doing it to be cute. We don’t need to react to those things, and these guys don’t listen to that stuff.” But when CBS sideline reporter Dana Jacobson asked Gbinije a similar question following the Orange’s second-round win over Middle Tennessee, Gbinije had a better and more honest answer. Specifically, Jacobson asked what Gbinije would say to all of those experts who said SU didn’t deserve an invite. “Thank you for the motivation,” Gbinije said, smiling at the camera before hustling off to the joyous Orange locker room. Clearly, this is a motivated and rejuvenated Orange bunch that was left for dead two weeks ago, when SU’s frantic comeback fell short against Pittsburgh in

3.23.16 - 3.29.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Cooney, who missed a last-second 3-pointer that would have won the game, called it “one of the toughest losses I’ve ever had.” Having lost five of their last six games, and having finished below .500 in the ACC (9-10, counting the tournament loss), Boeheim and the Orange fully expected to be sitting out the NCAA Tournament dance. But citing SU’s five wins over top-50 teams, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee gave the Orange an at-large berth and a No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region. Syracuse’s vaunted 2-3 zone defense confounded No. 7 seed Dayton, which couldn’t make a layup, and No. 15 Middle Tennessee (on March 20), which couldn’t make a jumper, and the Orange received offensive contributions from all seven of its regulars as SU blitzed Dayton 70-51 and Middle Tennessee 75-50 to earn the 19th “Sweet 16” appearance in program history. “I think that last loss to Pitt really woke us up,

and we really turned it up a notch,” said Orange center DaJuan Coleman, a Jamesville-DeWitt High School product who had eight points and five rebounds against Middle Tennessee. The Orange did catch a break when Middle Tennessee pulled off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history by shocking Big Ten Conference champion and No. 2 seed Michigan State in the first round. (Be honest.: You had Michigan State beating Syracuse in your tournament bracket, didn’t you?) “Bottom line is, you get in, you have that opportunity and you’re going to have to beat somebody good,” Boeheim said. “It’s as simple as that. I’m sure everybody thinks we’re happy that Michigan State got beat, but this team beat them. It’s not like it’s going to be an easy game.” It wasn’t as easy as the final score indicated because the Orange, leading just 40-39 midway through the second half, went on a 21-2 run to end the Blue Raiders’ quest to become just the second No. 15 seed to advance to the Sweet 16. Now, SU (21-13) faces another double-digit seed as it meets No. 11 Gonzaga (28-7) at around 9:40 p.m. on Friday, March 25, at the United Center in Chicago, with the winner facing either No. 1 Virginia or No. 4 Iowa State in the Elite Eight. Like Syracuse, Gonzaga is seemingly saving its best for the postseason as the Bulldogs routed No. 6 Seton Hall by 16 points and No. 3 Utah by 23 in the first two rounds in Denver. Gonzaga’s twin towers — 6-foot-10 forward Kyle Wiltjer (20.4 points, 6.4 rebounds per game) and 6-11 forward Domantas Sabonis (17.5, 11.7) — will be a handful for SU’s smaller frontcourt players. And Wiltjer and Sabonis anchor a defense that limited Seton Hall’s Isaiah Whitehead, an all-Big East Conference first-teamer, and Utah’s Jakob Poeltl, the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year and NBA lottery prospect, to their lowest scoring outputs of the season. But the Orange is battle-tested, having played nine games against seven of the Sweet 16 teams this season (North Car-

olina, Virginia, Duke, Miami and Notre Dame from the ACC, plus Texas A&M and Wisconsin). And Boeheim said when SU is making shots, like it did against Middle Tennessee (shooting a season-high 55.1 percent), the Orange can play with any team in the country. “I think we just have to make sure we understand that there’s a lot to be done, a lot can be done, a lot of good things can happen and we have to focus on that, the next game and not really look backward,” Boeheim said. “There will be time to look backward, some day.”

SU Women Make History

Another team that’s looking ahead is the Syracuse women’s basketball team, which reached the Sweet 16 of the women’s NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Coach Quentin Hillsman’s Orange, the No. 4 seed in the Sioux Falls Region, will face No. 1 South Carolina at either 7 or 9:30 p.m. on Friday, March 25, at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. (The game time was not determined until after the Syracuse New Times went to press.) The Orange (27-7) advanced to the Sweet 16 by routing No. 13 seed Army 73-56 and No. 12 Albany 76-59 last

weekend at the Carrier Dome. “It was just one of those feelings where it was a long time coming,” said Orange redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes, who scored a game-high 24 points against Albany, tying a school record for the NCAA Tournament. “This program has been building itself since Coach Q began it and now that we’re going to the Sweet 16, we can go farther than that. “That’s not our goal,” Sykes added. “We won our game, but now it’s to win the rest of them.” In addition to setting a school record with its 27th win of the year, the Orange senior class also matched the school record with its 96th victory. “It’s just an amazing feeling for our players,” Hillsman said. “They work hard and they really deserve this moment. I am happy for them. We are really excited to be moving on to the next round.” Against Albany, junior guard Alexis Peterson scored 15 points in the first half and hit a key basket late in the third quarter when the Great Danes, who had overcome a 17-point deficit to upset No. 5 seed Florida in the first round, appeared poised to make another comeback. But the Orange, which was ousted in the first round of the tournament in 2013 and the second round in each of the

last two years, finally broke through to the Sweet 16. “We’ve worked extremely, extremely hard to get to this point,” Peterson said. “The last couple of years we’ve come up short, so to get over this hump is big for us and it’s big for our team.” SNT

Support the public schools and colleges our kids deserve. For the first time in years, New York State has a $5.4 billion budget surplus, instead of a deficit. State lawmakers should use some of that surplus now, to correct years of inadequate funding for public education. Moreover, the flawed tax cap law has worsened the funding problem. Because the tax cap is near zero, school districts across the state are unable to raise the revenue needed to provide the academic and support services our kids need and deserve. In fact, more than ten percent of school districts will be forced to cut their school budgets, inflicting even more pain on students.

NYSUT is calling for: n a school aid increase of $2.5 billion and, n a $1 billion increase in state funding for SUNY, CUNY and New York’s community colleges.

Our kids and college students deserve more. Increase state aid to public education. syracusenewtimes.com | 3.23.16 - 3.29.16

UPSTATE UBER: ONE DAY ONLY

W

ho needs Uber when you’ve got Tuber? Starting at 11 a.m. today on Wednesday, March 23, and continuing until sunset, residents of Syracuse and a few lucky inner suburbs are encouraged to experience an Uber-like ride-share service provided by, well, me. There’s no charge to ride. In fact, there’s an additional free gift. In keeping with the name of my alarmingly unregulated startup company, each passenger will receive a free salt potato (uncooked), plus scintillating conversation. Tuber: “We get you there later, but you get a tater.” To request a pickup, just send me an email anytime between 11 a.m. and 7:20 p.m. at jeffmkramer@ gmail.com, telling me precisely where you are in Syracuse, East Syracuse, DeWitt, North Syracuse, Salina or Geddes, and where you wish to travel within that same area. As long as I’m not tied up with another passenger — or drunk — I’ll send you a confirmation email and estimated arrival time. Then just look for my gray 2008 Honda Element. Safety (as in mine) is the top priority, so a limit of two passengers per trip will be enforced by my 75-pound shepherd mix, Larry, who will ride shotgun

3.23.16 - 3.29.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

— or anywhere in the vehicle he pleases. Please note that while Larry is blessed with a generally amiable temperament, his teeth are impressively large and intact. Also, judging from his persistent encounters with porcupines and other wildlife, he lacks the capacity to feel pain or to evaluate his actions in a moral framework. In other words, treat your Tuber team with the courtesy and respect it deserves, and you’ll have a pleasant, rabies-free journey. There’s more fine print to follow, but first let me explain why I’m doing this. As many of you know, Uber and similar companies are banned in New York state except for the New York City area. In a process akin to an anaconda digesting a bicycle, our esteemed Legislature (official motto: “I wish to plead not guilty, Your Honor”) is considering measures that would let the whole state participate in

the half-decade-old global transportation phenomenon. Meanwhile, you can hail Uber in Kuala Lumpur and Walla Walla, Wash., but not in upstate New York. So, in addition to providing a free trial to readers, I’m hoping to make a point to Albany. Can we just once fast-track a piece of legislation that possibly won’t benefit a special interest, result in payola for elected officials or yield no-show jobs for the politically connected. Just this one time. Please? Yeah, I get it. Uber isn’t perfect. Some Uber drivers aren’t regular bathers. A tiny percentage are homicidal maniacs. The lowest of the low don’t have GPS. But those flaws just as easily describe the New York State Senate. Rather than let perfection be the enemy of the good, let’s view these ride-share companies as the kind of natural evolution that defines a healthy capitalist system. Trust me, I’m no tool of Uber. It will be a cold day in hell before I climb into one of their insane freelance death jalopies. But give Uber credit: In some ways, they built a better mousetrap. They’re typically faster, more efficient and cheaper than the $60 I’ve shelled out for the 19-mile cab ride from the Syracuse airport to Jamesville. Heck, we’ve got lap dancers who don’t charge that much per ride. Or so I’ve been told. But getting back to Tuber. In addition to the aforementioned stipulations, Tuber guarantees a smoke-free vehicle that recently had an old parking garage receipt professionally extracted from the interior blower fan, meaning the vehicle no longer sounds like it’s about to explode. (Upon accepting this service, the passenger acknowledges that the vehicle could explode at any time.) Also important: My car, my radio station. Finally, by using Tuber, all passengers acknowledge that they might be mentioned in a follow-up column in the Syracuse New Times, and that their likeness might be published in the form of a low-quality camera phone photo taken at a red light ... by Larry. That about covers it. Thank you in advance for using Tuber. Enjoy the ride. SNT

VISUALIZING RACISM, IDENTITY AND GENDER

T

he Community Folk Art Center hosts As Bad As I Wanna Be: Reimaging Black Womanhood, featuring work by three artists whose pieces both reflect on their own experiences and discuss gender, race and cultural context. To initiate that discussion, each has selected varying visual approaches. Delita Martin, for example, has two pieces that touch directly on family life, using familiar objects to communicate that experience. “Mother of Mine” combines a depiction of an elderly woman and two coffeepots.

8

The artist also does large, bold portraits of African-American women such as “Felise in Blue,” a work created with conte crayons, acrylic, gelatin painting and hand-stitched fabric. It encompasses abundant blue color, fabric on canvas, and a merging

of the piece’s elements; Felise’s face is decorated with visual patterns that appear throughout the work. The artist uses the same media in creating “Quilted Angel,” an artwork emphasizing orange and gold colors. It’s a striking piece, prompting a second or third look by a viewer. In “The Watcher,” the subject looks directly at viewers. This isn’t a mere visualization of a stare-down. Martin is communicating more complex ideas, with one possibility being the perspective people bring to everyday encounters. Artist Nina Buxenbaum is a woman of biracial heritage, the child of African-American and German-Jewish parents. Her pieces, done in mixed media or oils, stress the notion that identity is complex. Several of them portray two women, as in the work where a white woman touches the hair of an African-American woman. In a second work, two woman interact; very near them there’s a blue-colored doll. Another oil-on-linen artwork, “Reflection,” portrays a woman deep in thought, while another references conflict, with one woman trying to strangle another. These, and other works, aren’t suggesting that Buxenbaum’s identity, or that of any person, can be neatly divided into two selves. Rather, they point to the issue of assumptions made simply on the basis of a person’s appearance. Moreover, while the artist’s own experiences certainly influence her work, there’s a larger conversation going on, one exploring how identity is formed. Artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle has works from three of her projects on display. One piece, “Tituba The Two-Headed Woman,” refers to a slave who gave key testimony

leading up to the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts. Among other things, she said that dogs, cats and rats ordered her to do evil things. Tituba later repudiated that confession, saying she gave testimony only because her master beat her. Hinkle’s artwork has an absurdist flavor but is dead serious about Tituba’s status as a devalued person in 1692 Salem. Hinkle also references her Kentifrica Project, a body of work based on her growing up in Louisville, Ky., and having connections to African ancestors. She invented the idea of Kentifrica as a place with its own music, cuisine and artifacts. This isn’t a pure exercise in fantasy; Hinkle has utilized Kentifrica as a starting point for talking about heritage and culture. The current show includes a portrait of Delita Keneyenye, a Kentifrican scholar. In a third project, “The Uninvited,” Hinkle has reworked a series of postcards made in France many decades ago, when

that nation was a colonial power in Africa. The postcards depict African women as primitives. In one instance, she inserted material that hangs down on the subject’s face and functions as a mask. In “Metropolis,” Hinkle placed terrain, as seen in a map, over the postcard. Finally, “Infestation” has correction fluid sprinkled over a photo, critiquing the postcards’ perspective and impact. The pieces develop a common theme: Those who control cultural imagery have significant power. As Bad As I Wanna Be presents works by three emerging artists, all of whom who have developed their own visual vocabularies. It takes a while to get acquainted with their pieces, and that’s particularly true of Hinkle’s artworks, which come from three of her projects. Nonetheless, the exhibition is meant to challenge viewers and to showcase artists who take nontraditional approaches. SNT

BURGER TIME Mac Sabbath, an arch parody of fast food and heavy metal, comes to Syracuse By Jessica Novak Mike Odd, manager of Mac Sabbath, didn’t see the band’s success coming. What started with an anonymous phone call and a strange meeting in a hamburger joint has since become an international sensation — in less than three years. “I had no idea how big it would get or how fast it would move,” he admits in a phone interview from the road. The band, currently in the middle of their longest road trip yet, has already slammed its Rock-Sham-Shake tour through Texas, Florida and Virginia. They’ll play the Lost Horizon on Saturday, March 26, 7 p.m. According to Odd, the history of Mac Sabbath began when a singer named Ronald Osbourne anonymously called up Odd in late 2013 and persuaded him to meet at a restaurant in Chatsworth, Calif. Osbourne knew about Odd’s experiences as a singer with Rosemary’s Billygoat, the cultish Los Angeles rock

3.23.16 - 3.29.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

outfit that dressed up in horrific costumes and was influenced by acts such as shock rockers Alice Cooper and GWAR. “I sat there and waited and waited until this clown burst in the door,” Odd recalls. “He was dripping with red and yellow dirty tassels scraping the floor. He sat in the booth I was in and started spewing out random ideas and concepts, completely bowling me over. He told me it was my destiny to manage his band Mac Sabbath, to bring his secret project above ground. “By the time we got kicked out of that place, he asked me to come to another similar place, but at three in the morning. It was the basement of a burger joint where I watched Mac Sabbath perform among cardboard boxes of freeze-dried condiments and burgers.” Odd’s experience was memorable, albeit bizarre and frightening. The band performed dressed like characters from Mc-

Royales with cheese: Mac Sabbath includes vocalist Ronald Osbourne, Slayer MacCheeze on guitar, bassist Grimalice and Catburglar on drums.

Adding to the Mac mythology, Odd claims that Osbourne has traveled through the time-space continuum to spread the word about drive-through dining, kind of like The Terminator meets Fast Food Nation. “He insists he’s been back to the 1970s to warn them what will happen to food and that we need to get back to the ideology of the 1970s when food and music were genuine,” Odd says. Despite their success, Odd isn’t sure about releasing recorded music, either. Osbourne is slow to adopt modern technology, insisting that he’d rather release their tuneage on 8-track tapes, in keeping with the tradition of the 1970s-era music contraptions. “I’m trying to find 8-track manufacturers,” Odd says. “It’s been very unsuccessful. Trying to figure out where it’s headed is interesting, but I’m figuring it out.” Odd also insists that weird as the show sounds, it needs to be seen to be understood. “When we walk into the club, it’s an eyebrows-up sort of situation,” he says. “It’s ‘Why this?’ and ‘Why that?’ But after they see it, it’s completely different. People fall in love with it. Just watching these characters up there playing songs is one thing. Then this crazy weird thing goes on in each song. Ronald pulls in the crowd, there’s audience interaction. There’s birthday party tricks, laser-eyed skull clowns on the stage and inflatable burgers bopping around the crowd. It’s a multimedia experience.” On top of that, Odd insists the music is great. “They’re fantastic musicians,” he says. “It’s really hard to figure out how these creatures are manipulating the instruments as well as they do.” Mac Sabbath visits the Lost Horizon, 5863 Thompson Road, on Saturday, March 26, 7 p.m. Opening acts include Pale Green Stars and Reefer Southerland. Admission is $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Tickets are available at thelosthorizon.com. More information on the band can be found at facebook. com/MacSabbath. SNT

Donaldland, the fantasy world used in fast-food kingpin McDonald’s marketing campaigns. Osbourne is the vocalist, with Slayer MacCheeze on guitar, bassist Grimalice and Catburglar smacking the drums. “I saw them perform as these childhood characters who have a warm spot in my heart, but singing about fast food, GMOs, and government food controls in Black Sabbath songs,” Odd explains. “It was like nothing I’d experienced before in my life. So, I thought, I’ll give it a try, I’ll work with this guy.” In July 2014 Mac Sabbath performed their first public concert as part of an art show in Santa Monica. In October they performed a Halloween festival for an elementary school in Silver Lake and headlined the Long Beach Zombie Walk. A few months later, a video of the band performing “Frying Pan,” their Mickey D-themed parody of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” caught media attention from metal websites including Loudwire and Metal Injection. “Frying Pan” features mock-plaintive rhyming lyrics such as, “I once burned your meal/ My old job was cooking veal/ Now it’s a culinary crime/ All our future is pink slime.” From there, the band went viral. MTV News, Stereogum, Gigwise and MusicTimes all talked about the act, while publications in Germany, France, Italy and Poland covered their activity. On Jan. 1, 2015, Black Sabbath shared the video on their official Facebook page. Odd relishes the moment: “Then it went crazy. They flew up to almost a million hits. That really helped. It was really wonderful to have their support.” It’s only gotten weirder since then. Although they hadn’t played outside of California, in June 2015 the band performed at the Download Festival in Leicestershire, England, with KISS and Motley Crue. The french-fried funsters also played at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival last year, performing prior to Elton John’s show. “After that I thought, ‘Wow, I guess this is gonna work,” Odd says. “It’s completely changed my life and now I’m doing it full time.”

CURTAIN CALL FOR SALT CITY CENTER’S BELOVED PAT LOTITO

Married couples can support each, fight for the same goals, share the same values and still maintain distinct aesthetics and personalities. Think of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, or Anne Bancroft and Mel Brooks. So it was with Pat and Joe Lotito, the hardest-working, most self-sacrificing team on the Syracuse arts scene for nearly five decades. From the founding at the old warehouse on Peat 64th CNY artists half page New times.qxp_Layout 2/9/16 PMforPage Street in the late 1960s, the1Salt City 1:18 Center the 1

Performing Arts programs always carried pictures of founder Joseph N. Lotito, Pat’s husband who died in 2009. Joe directed and appeared in many Salt City Center productions, sometimes admirably. But as a tireless jill of all trades as well as music director, Pat —who died Jan. 9 at age 87—was vital to every production. Performing the score of Jesus Christ Superstar more often than anyone on earth is actually one of her lesser accomplishments.

Humor united and defined them. Joe knew how to tell a joke and get a laugh when his character was required to deliver one. Pat, a blonde from Kansas City, brimmed with a subtle, often impish wit that could rise to any occasion. She loved to compete in the New Yorker cartoon caption contests. During a rehearsal for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in the 1980s, actor Robert “Tank” Steingraber was standing near Pat’s piano when a lethal-sized piece of plaster fell off the Salt City ceiling (a former synagogue erected in 1916) and landed squarely on her goose-necked lamp. The shattered bulb sprayed sparks over the whole piano and keyboard. Unfazed, never missing a beat, Pat crooned to Steingraber, “Ain’t this place something.” Quite apart from her facility at generating laughter, as seen in her poetry and song lyrics, Pat could brandish the penetrating wit that shapes insight. This was best on display in her deeply personal show of Alice in Wanderland in 1991, with about 30 songs in a variety of styles from rock and reggae to Puccini. All the numbers were tailored to fit the talents and stage personae of Salt City Center veterans, including Tony Brown as the White Rabbit, husband Joe as the Mad

Pat Lotito served as musical director for many Salt City Center shows, including (clockwise from top left) the 1980s-era musical blockbusters Two by Two (featuring Bob Brown and Joe Lotito), Sweeney Todd (with Joe Lotito and Robert Steingraber) and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Hatter, Frank Fiumano as the Cheshire Cat, and Bill Molesky as a Rasta Caterpillar, the only local show ever to attempt that. The libretto spins off Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, of course, only the consumption of white pills here signals death, not a dreamworld. Lotito never invited a comparison of herself with Lewis Carroll, but there it was: existential ambiguities and in-joke pranks in the guise of a children’s entertainment. It was also frequently hilarious and eminently singable. Popular music from classic Broadway through rock, country and even rap filled the seats. There was no rhythm or beat alien to Pat’s keyboard, and none she could not master. Still, as she had come east to attend Baltimore’s highly selective Peabody Institute, one always had the impression her heart was in the classics. She got on well with classical musicians, among them Calvin Custer, longtime assistant conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Custer, who died young from cancer, also bridged the classical and pop idioms and enjoyed a national reputation. Company regulars report that Pat Lotito was never happier than when playing poker with Custer, trading barbs and matching erudition. This led to another show close to her

heart: the bittersweet, one-act opera from the early 2001, Candle in the Wind, based partly on the folktale “Stone Soup.” The cast included Jill Ozinski, one of the clearest sopranos on the scene, and baritone Jimi James, often heard at Syracuse Opera. Enthusiastic audiences, who compared Candle’s score favorably with the works of Gian Carlo Menotti, included Richard McKee, then artistic director of Syracuse Opera. Central New York Jazz Orchestra executive director Larry Luttinger was listed as co-author when Candle was released in CD in 2008. Pat could work with collaborators, or she might forge ahead solo, as with Alice and earlier with Yes (1979), featuring Bob Brown, Mary Cartier and Cindy Volzing. She joined forces with longtime Salt City Center presence Bob Fitzsimmons for Throne (1986), based partially on Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper. Fitzsimmons, who also suffered an untimely death, was a poker-playing pal like Custer and Luttinger. The last collaborator was a whirlwind named Ken Prescott, who flew into town for a few frenzied seasons but left a lasting mark. He helped to launch A Dickens of a Christmas in December 1994, with dialogue from A Christmas Carol and all music from Lotito. As with Alice, some roles were tailored for local players,

notably a growling-to-ebullient Scrooge for Bill Molesky and the orotund Ghost of Christmas Present for Steingraber. Not only is Dickens the all-time box office champ for locally written shows, but it’s the only local product to have toured Palm Springs (!). While there, Pat told a Kentucky-born busboy to come to Syracuse and play leads. That’s what Steve Kazee did, vaulting on to win a Tony Award for Once two years ago. Pat Lotito was one of the most loved figures in local theater. That affection and admiration arose from thousands of acts of generosity and encouragement not visible to a journalist’s eye. She gave a smile and a boost up when a lash of disgust would have been appropriate from a lesser person. Shannon Tompkins remembers being a callow 16-year-old when she auditioned for the chorus of a production of 42nd Street. Although she later became a multiple Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) winner for performance and choreography, at that time Tompkins could not even read music, which she had to admit before the crowd. “Oh, honey,” assured Pat Lotito, “just follow the dots. When they go up, you go up, and when they go down, you go down.” SNT

ifty years ago Charles Cannon left a little town in Georgia and headed for the Salt City, where several cousins had already migrated. “I was making $1.25 an hour,” he recalls. “I needed to better myself.” The transition went smoothly. “It was a Monday. I went to General Motors in the morning, filled out an application, and started working that night.” What Cannon missed, however, was the gospel singing that had provided his spirituality since age 10. So Cannon gathered family members and formed the Bells of Harmony. The gospel unit received a Lifetime Achievement Award when it was inducted into the Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys) Hall of Fame during the March 3 ceremony at Upstairs at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. But an unexpected announcement slipped into his acceptance speech: Cannon shocked the gathered veterans of the local music scene with a quick reference to the group’s anticipated farewell.

3.23.16 - 3.29.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Many seemed not to have heard it, but those closest to the podium shouted, “NO!” in disbelief. In an interview a week later, Cannon clarified the group’s plans for the future. Noting that he never dreamed of a Hall of Fame possibility, unaware that people in other musical genres had any knowledge of his group, he said calmly, “We won’t be quitting, just retiring. I’ve got health issues which won’t allow those three-day trips on the road. Now when we go to New York City we’ll come back the same day.” For Cannon, New York City performance memories are matched by meaningful connections with the local Central New York community, at senior citizen centers, neighborhood parks, Juneteenth celebrations and the New York State Fair. High on his pride list are designation as the No. 1 group at the Central New York Gospel Explosion just two years after the Bells of Harmony formed, and also serving as an opening act for the Grammy Award-winning Mighty Clouds of Joy at Tucker

Baptist Church on Oakwood Avenue. Actually, plans to limit performances had been discussed for a year by Cannon and Howard Wright, who joined the group two years after it formed. The two are the only Bells of Harmony veterans remaining from the 1960s. “It’s just time,” Wright observed. “We’ve been up and down the road. It’s not going to be easy. We’ve touched a lot of lives. But we’re getting older. We might get together once a year for something special.” SNT The first “something special” will be a gala 50th anniversary concert on Saturday, April 30, 5 p.m., at the Double Tree Hotel, 6301 Carrier Parkway in East Syracuse. Appearing with the Bells of Harmony will be the local group Foundation and the Gospel Legends from Columbia, S.C. Tickets for the black tie affair are $50 and need to be purchased by April 1 at Collins Barbershop, 309 S. Crouse Ave. For information, call Kelvin Cannon, 807-3153, or Calvin Carter, 383-1411.

Wilbur Wright were kids, their father gave them a toy helicopter powered by a rubber band. The year was 1878. Twenty-five years later, the brothers became the first humans to sail above the earth in a flying machine. They testified that the toy helicopter had been a key inspiration as they worked to develop their pioneering invention. In the spirit of the Wright Brothers’ magic seed, Aries, I invite you to revive your connection to a seminal influence from your past. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to feed a dream that was foreshadowed in you a long time ago.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) “The task of a writer

is not to solve the problem but to state the problem correctly,” said Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Whether or not you’re a writer, Taurus, that is also your special task in the coming weeks. The riddle that has begun to captivate your imagination is not yet ripe enough for you to work on in earnest. It has not been defined with sufficient clarity. Luckily, you have the resources you need to research all the contingencies, and you have the acuity to come up with a set of empowering questions.

that if you eat enormous amounts of chocolate, you will boost your memory. Science has proved it. The bad news is that in order to get the full effect of the memory enhancement, you would have to consume so much chocolate that you would get sick. I propose that we consider this scenario as a metaphor for what may be going on in your life. Is it possible you’re doing things that are healthy for you in one way but that diminish you in another? Or are you perhaps getting or doing too much of a good thing -- going to unbalanced extremes as you pursue a worthy goal? Now is a favorable time to figure out if you’re engaged in such behavior, and to change it if you are.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) When the young

director Richard Lester got his big break, he took full advantage. It happened in 1964, when the early Beatles asked him to do their first movie, A Hard Day’s Night. Lester’s innovative approach to the project propelled his career to a higher level that brought him many further opportunities. Writing of Lester’s readiness, critic Alexander Walker said, “No filmmaker appeared more punctually when his hour struck.” That’s what I hope you will soon be doing in your own chosen field, Cancerian. Do you understand how important it will be to have impeccable timing? No procrastination or hemming and hawing, please. Be crisply proactive.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) If you are

enmeshed in a jumble that makes you squirm or if you are caught in a tangle that stifles your selflove, you have three choices. Here’s how Eckhart Tolle defines them: 1. Get out of the situation. 2. Transform the situation. 3. Completely accept the situation. Does that sound reasonable, Scorpio? I hope so, because the time has come to act. Don’t wait to make your decision. Do it soon. After that, there will be no whining allowed. You can no longer indulge in excuses. You must accept the consequences. On the bright side, imagine the new freedom and power you will have at your disposal.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Here’s a proposed experiment. Sidle up to a creature you’d love to be closer to, and softly sing the following lyrics: “Come with me, go with me. Burn with me, glow with me. Sleep with me, wake with me.” At this point, run three circles around the creature as you flap your arms like a birds’ wings. Then continue your singing: “Rise with me, fall with me. Work with me, play with me. Pray with me, sin with me.” At this point, leap up into the air three times, unleashing a burst of laughter each time you hit the ground. Continue singing: “Let me get high with you. Laugh with you, cry with you. Make me your partner in crime.” At this point blow three kisses toward the creature, then run away. (P.S. The lyrics I’m quoting here were composed by songwriter Fran Landesman.) CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) In getting ener-

gy from food, we humans have at our disposal more than 50,000 edible plants. And yet we choose to concentrate on just a few. Wheat, corn, rice and potatoes make up two-thirds of our diet, and 11 other staples comprise most of the rest. Let’s use this as a metaphor for the kind of behavior you should avoid in the coming weeks. I think it will be crucial for you to draw physical, emotional and spiritual sustenance from a relatively wide variety of sources. There’s nothing wrong with your usual providers, but for now you need to expand your approach to getting the nurturing you need.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “We teach each

poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) left his home in France and settled in Abyssinia, which these days is known as Ethiopia. “I sought voyages,” he wrote, “to disperse the enchantments that had colonized my mind.” You might want to consider a similar strategy in the coming weeks, Leo. From an astrological perspective, it’s going to be an excellent time both to wander free of your usual haunts and to disperse the enchantments that have colonized your mind. Why not find ways to synergize these two opportunities?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) At one point in his

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) In her poem

life, author C.S. Lewis had a rude awakening as he took stock of the progress he thought he had been making. “I am appalled to see how much of the change I thought I had undergone lately was only imaginary,” he wrote. I want to make sure that something similar doesn’t happen to you, Virgo. You’re in the midst of what should be a Golden Age of Self-Transformation. Make sure you’re actually doing the work that you imagine you’re doing -- and not just talking about it and thinking about it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “There are questions

your beloved illusions, which you’d rather preserve. \I’m here to urge you to risk posing all these types of questions, Libra. I think you’re strong enough and smart enough, and in just the right ways, to deal constructively with the answers. I’m not saying you’ll be pleased with everything you find out. But you will ultimately be glad you finally made the inquiries.

other how to live.” Poet Anne Michaels said that, and now I’m passing it on to you -- just in time for the phase of your cycle when acting like a curious student is your sacred duty and your best gift to yourself. I don’t necessarily mean that you should take a workshop or enroll in a school. Your task is to presume that everyone you meet and every encounter you have may bring you rich learning experiences. If you’re willing to go as far as I hope you will, even your dreams at night will be opportunities to get further educated. Even your vigils in front of the TV. Even your trips to the convenience store to buy ice cream.

that you don’t ask because you’re afraid of the answers,” wrote Agatha Christie. I would add that there are also questions you don’t ask because you mistakenly think you already know the answers. And then there are questions you don’t ask because their answers would burst

“Time,” Piscean poet Lia Purpura wonders about “not picking up a penny because it’s only a little luck.” Presumably she is referring to a moment when you’re walking down a street and you spy an almost-but-not-quite-worthless coin lying on the concrete. She theorizes that you may just leave it there. It adds next to nothing to your wealth, right? Which suggests that it also doesn’t have much value as a symbol of good fortune. But I urge you to reject this line of thought in the coming weeks, Pisces. In my astrological opinion, you’ll be wise to capitalize on the smallest opportunities. There will be plenty of them, and they will add up. Homework: Imagine that seven years from now you will want a new career or line of work. What will it be? Write: Truthrooster@gmail.com.
