Wrong Arm of the Law

Police Officer Shaun Jurgens resigned from the Fredericksburg, Va., police department after using his Taser and pepper spray on a hit-and-run suspect traveling in the wrong direction who refused to obey orders to show his hands and exit the vehicle. Jurgens said he presumed the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but he was actually having a medical emergency, possibly a stroke. (Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star)

Holy Erection

Aiming to provide moral support for Pakistan’s persecuted Christian minority, Pavez Henry Gill is building a 14-story bulletproof cross at the entrance to a Christian cemetery in the middle of Karachi. He had hoped the 140-foot-high, 42-foot-long iron, steel and concrete structure would be the world’s tallest cross, but it will fall 68 feet short of “The Great Cross” in Florida. Still, it will be the biggest in Asia. (Associated Press)

Missing the Point

To avoid being confined to a prison cell for assault, Benjamin Louis Young, 52, hid out from police in the basement of his home in Onoway, Alberta, for 17 years. While his wife went to work, Young helped raise their two children, did household chores and dealt marijuana. “We had been looking for him for years,” RCMP Cpl. Colette Zazulak said after police, who never stopped looking for him, finally decided, for the first time, to visit his house. “I knew someday I’d have to give my pound of flesh,” Young said after pleading guilty to the original charge. He received a three-year prison sentence. (Edmonton Journal) syracusenewtimes.com | 3.30.16 - 4.6.16

All Four One: Syracuse is the ninth different school to have its men’s and women’s basketball teams in the Final Four in the same TAKE year. Connecticut is the only school to do it multiple times, with four.

FINAL FOUR DANCE FEVER IGNITES SU HOOPS TEAMS

E

ven as the Syracuse University men’s basketball team went deeper and deeper in the NCAA Tournament, fans who endured this topsy-turvy season kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

But even when it did, it worked out for the Orange. Late in the first half of SU’s Elite Eight game against Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia on Easter Sunday, March 27, Orange freshman Tyler Lydon stumbled backward and lost one of his 13½inch shoes. SU’s Michael Gbinije, who has the magic touch with anything and everything on a basketball court these days, calmly tossed the shoe away while dribbling and passed the ball to a wide-open Lydon, who drilled a 3-pointer. It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, with SU being thoroughly outplayed and trailing by nine, but the symbolism should have been obvious: Wasn’t it Cinderella who became famous for losing a shoe? In NCAA Tournament-speak, a “Cinderella” is a low-seeded team that makes a deep run. After rallying from a 15-point deficit with 9½ minutes left to defeat No. 1 seed Virginia 68-62, the 10th-seeded Orange is officially one of the greatest Cinderellas in tournament history. “Where you’re at isn’t important, it’s where you can get to,” said Orange coach Jim Boeheim. “You

3.30.16 - 4.6.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

can be in a great situation or you can be in an awful situation, and you can still overcome that awful situation. It didn’t look like we would be able to (against Virginia), but these guys, they just made hard plays.” The win over Virginia propelled the Orange into the Final Four for the sixth time in school history, the fifth time under Boeheim, and the second time in four years. And it made Syracuse the center of the college basketball universe as it’s the only school with teams in the men’s and women’s Final Fours. After shocking No. 1 seed South Carolina in its first-ever Sweet 16 game, the fourth-seeded Orange women’s team advanced to the Final Four with an 89-67 romp over No. 7 Tennessee, one of the most storied programs in women’s college basketball history. The SU women will face another No. 7 seed, Washington, on Sunday, April 3, in Indianapolis with the winner playing in the national championship game Tuesday, April 5. (The TV games will be on ESPN.) “To be able to do this at this level is something you can never forget,” said Syracuse junior point guard

Alexis Peterson. “You can’t really put the words in order because we’re so fortunate, so blessed to be one of four teams standing.” The men’s team will face another familiar opponent as it plays ACC regular-season and tournament champion North Carolina at about 8:50 p.m. Saturday, April 2, in Houston. The winner will face either Villanova or Oklahoma in the national title game Monday, April 4. (Cable’s TBS has Final Four broadcast rights this year.) “Man, this is a dream come true for me,” said Orange freshman guard Malachi Richardson, who sparked the second-half comeback against Virginia. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m glad I’m able to do it.” Three weeks ago, when the Orange lost to Pitt in its only ACC Tournament game, it appeared that buying a ticket was the only way an SU player would make the Final Four. Even Boeheim, who said he thought the Orange deserved to be in, admitted that he was “90 percent sure” the 19-13 Orange was out. But the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee thought otherwise and placed SU as a No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region. Given new life, SU used strong second halves to defeat No. 7 seed Dayton, No. 15 Middle Tennessee (which shocked No. 2 Michigan State), No. 11 Gonzaga and No. 1 Virginia to become the first 10th-seed and fourth double-digit seed to reach the Final Four in the tournament’s 64-team era. “I mean, I thought we deserved to be in the tournament, but I certainly wasn’t planning on getting to the Final Four,” Boeheim said. “We tell the players, ‘It’s one game. You play one game, and if you can just win one game, you get another chance.’ They’ve done that.” It was also one game at a time during the regular season, but that didn’t work out as well. The Orange suffered embarrassing losses to St. John’s and Georgetown during Boeheim’s NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension, started 0-4 in the ACC, and lost five of its final six games before the NCAA Tournament. Three weeks ago, the Las Vegas odds of SU

rd 83 Annual

winning the NCAA Tournament were 300 to 1. But through it all, the players didn’t turn on each other, continued to play hard, and, while it didn’t always show on the court, they learned from their mistakes. Boeheim credited his two fifth-year seniors, Gbinije and Trevor Cooney, with keeping the team together through the difficult times. “We had stretches through the season where we couldn’t buy a win, and through that whole session, no one was really getting on each other,” Gbinije said. “Everybody was positive, and just as a teammate, when you have especially me and Trevor doing things like that, it spreads on everybody. I think we did a great job of staying positive, and now everybody is happy and rolling.” When SU made the tournament, Boeheim said he was never happier on a Selection Sunday because he didn’t think they were going to get in. Now that his team has made the most improbable Final Four run in school history, Boeheim said he has never been prouder. “They just didn’t give up, they never gave up, they just kept making plays (against Virginia) and Malachi stepped up for a freshman, and then Mike, and then Trevor, then the whole team,” Boeheim said. “It was a whole team effort, and these guys really deserve it. We beat a great basketball team. And I’ve never been prouder in all my 40 years of a basketball team than I am of this team.”

Toughness Defines Orange Women

One of former Syracuse University athletic director Daryl Gross’ favorite sayings was “Be Extraordinary,” and it’s something SU women’s coach Quentin Hillsman has repeated often to his teams over the years. Hillsman, now in his 10th year at SU, has engineered the steady climb from a 9-20 record in his first season in 2006-2007 to SU’s first appearances in the Sweet 16, Elite 8 and Final Four this year.

“There’s nobody that plays basketball or coaches basketball that can say the Final Four is not their dream and not what they work for,” Hillsman told ESPN after the Tennessee game. “And to just look back and think, from Day One where we are to this point, Dr. Gross had a lot of faith in me and gave me the head coaching job at Syracuse when nobody would give me a (major college) job.” In the 80-72 win over South Carolina, which was ranked No. 2 in the nation, the Orange trailed by as many as 13 points late in the second quarter. But led by Peterson’s 26 points, SU set a program record with its fifth win of the season over a ranked opponent and matched the highest-ranked team it has ever defeated. (The Orange beat No. 2 Connecticut in 1996.) Against Tennessee, the Orange shot 47 percent from 3-point range (14-for-30) and set a school record for points in an NCAA Tournament game with 89. Peterson fought through a sore hip to break her own school record for points in a tournament game with 29, while SU’s frenetic defense harassed the Lady Volunteers into 21 turnovers. Following the game, Hillsman sounded a lot like his counterpart with the men’s team. “I don’t get confused about it; I don’t think it’s my scheme, it’s them,” he said of his players. “Once they stop playing hard for you and once they’ve had enough and they lay down on you, you’re done. And they’ve never done that, and the kids continued to fight and play hard and let me push them to get to this level.” To get to the ultimate level, Syracuse will have to defeat Washington for the second time this season. SU tripped the Huskies 66-62 in late November at the South Point Shootout tournament in Las Vegas. Like the SU men, the women will go as far as their hustle and heart will take them. “Our toughness determines our destiny,” SU senior guard Brianna Butler said. “And so far our toughness has gotten us here.” SNT

A WINNING ROMCOM WITH TICS AND QUIRKS

His was an outrageous proposal: $2,153 for dance lessons. Ever Montgomery (played by Zack Calhoon) initially looks like a clumsy uber-nerd, his plaid shirt buttoned up to the collar. He might even be a stalker. He lives in the same building on the Upper West Side as inactive Broadway dancer Senga Quinn (Rachel Burttram), and he’s been watching her. She learns that the source of this inflated fee-for-service is that Ever will soon have to attend a formal dinner where he is to receive an award and — to his dismay — be required to dance. So he’d like to take lessons pronto with a pro. Now at Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre Company, Mark St. Germain’s Dancing Lessons is a one-act, a bit less than 90 minutes, but so complex that nuggets of exposition appear nearly all the way through. We never learn everything, such as the implicit significance of their uncommon given names Ever and Senga. Sara Lampert Hoover’s deft direction underscores St. Germain’s intentions, however. When we first see Senga she’s lounging listlessly on a couch, half-covered by a blanket, trying to tune in the right music and not finding what she wants. Only when she stands up do we see that her right leg is encased in a stiff brace. This is before we learn she is — or was — a dancer. Well before the beginning of the action Senga had injured the leg in an automobile accident, but she remains immobile because of a rare allergy to anesthetics, forbidding an easy return to her former career. Disconsolate, Senga has withdrawn from the world and barks an unfriendly “Go away!” to Ever’s knock at the door, even before she knows what he’s about. St. Germain’s creation of Ever is a dizzying risk: American drama’s first romantic hero with Asperger’s syndrome. Zack Calhoon’s portrayal is a masterwork of authenticity and restraint. His Ever has all the physical tics, like hands pressed against thighs, the unwillingness to look the listener in the eye, and the staccato speech rhythms. But this is no ABC After School Special urging our sympathy and concern for the

Zack Calhoon and Rachel Burttram in Kitchen Theatre Company’s Dancing Lessons. George Cannon photo

afflicted. Instead, Ever mocks his condition, calling himself an “Aspy” and contrasts his progress with that of “neuro-typicals.” Along with this he is a high achiever with an academic career in the earth sciences, hardly a victim. A keen ecologist, he rattles off statistics on climate change without reference to notes, but also with a sense of urgency. That facility with details recalls a patch of Dustin Hoffman’s Raymond in the 1988 movie Rain Man. It’s obsessive and a bit more than Senga wants to hear, and it’s not because she’s a climate denier. Ever’s principal deficiency as a dance student still remains: He does not want to be touched. And she’s still not standing on two good legs. As we begin to consider how this conflict might be resolved, we also realize that both Ever and Senga are more familiar figures than they first appear. While Senga temporarily achieved the glamour of Broadway, an allure thousands of American girls aspire to, it has given her nothing to rest on, including not very much money. Like a character in A Chorus Line, she keeps calling up her roots. Hers are in Hamtramck, Mich., a hardscrabble patch of post-industrial rustbelt surrounded by Detroit. It’s also an immigrant town; Quinn would not have been a common name there. But it was redeemed by a strawberry festival. Ever assures her he knows all about it. We can also feel that playwright St. Germain wants us to see that broken leg as a metaphor for all the other wounds that Senga is carrying. If Ever’s affliction is not also metaphorical, it becomes less strange as the action skips on. At bottom Ever brings the guilelessness of a Charlie Brown, and his impossible aspirations are

winning rather than absurd. Which leads to this show’s singular achievement: It’s often laugh-out-loud funny. To describe the play as a comedy about Asperger’s syndrome is to make it sound like an exercise in bad taste. But once we see the physical peculiarities and the distinctive speech patterns as something we might possess ourselves, Ever’s difficulties become our own. Acnd Calhoon’s timing enhances the lines, not unlike the way a Yiddish accent can make many jokes funnier, as Mel Brooks has long been telling us. The intimate space of the Kitchen Theatre’s 99-seat venue enhances the intensity of Dancing Lessons’ conflicting emotions. Senga’s emotional journey takes more twists and turns in what is, we never forget, her bedroom. Actress Rachel Burttram lays Senga’s soul bare and invites Ever to touch, a connection they both need. David Arsenault’s set and Tyler M. Perry’s lighting allow us to see through walls as well as epidermis. Playwright Mark St. Germain is an important and highly individual writer, not a shadow or artistic sibling of some better-known figure. His home base has been Barrington Stage in the Berkshires, with many projects going on to off-Broadway. Local audiences will remember his Camping With Henry and Tom, produced by Contemporary Theatre of Syracuse in the mid1990s, in which Richard Harris as Warren G. Harding, otherwise our worst president, saves democracy from the incipient fascism of Henry Ford. A more recent success, Freud’s Last Session, in which the psychologist and writer C.S. Lewis debate about God, ran for two years off-Broadway. It’s high time we see more of him around here. SNT syracusenewtimes.com | 3.30.16 - 4.6.16

YEAH YEAH YEAH FOR BEATLECUSE 3

On Saturday, April 2, Paul Davie is reviving his BeatleCUSE tribute concert for a third installment at downtown Syracuse’s Landmark Theatre. The music festival won’t have the same old songs, but it will just as ever encourage dancing. Moving in time with The Beatles’ catalog, Davie and his crew of new, returning and special guest performers will take on the albums Rubber Soul (released December 1965) and Revolver (August 1966). The performance follows the March 8 death of manager and “Fifth Beatle” George Martin, who was 90. David Bowie, who died Jan. 10, will also be featured in a special tribute; the musician-actor’s song “Fame” (1975) was co-written by John Lennon and Carlos Alomar. The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds (May 1966) will also be celebrated at BeatleCUSE. One of the California band’s most iconic albums, Brian Wilson’s soul-squeezing “God Only Knows” is acclaimed for lyrics and composition, especially the inverted chords and perpetual rounds closing the song at just shy of three minutes. The song inspired Paul McCartney’s concept behind The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album (1967), and it will be performed by 19 local musicians and a string ensemble.

Sgt. Pepper (June 1967) is on Davie’s mind because BeatleCCUSE will perform songs from it inLerner the next planned installment & Loewe's of the tribute series. “It’s Sgt. Pepper, after all,” he said. “We can do a show until 2020 without repeating a single song,” he added. (These would incorporate solo Beatles projects and their collaborations with other artists.)

Leigh, Mark Hoffmann, Dave Porter and more. “This show focuses on the music, not the boots-and-suits reinterpretations,” said Davie, who also performs with the moptop tribute band the Fab Five. He has assigned the songs to the musicians, who will be playing 10- to 15-minute sets, based on knowing them as individuals and from seeing live performances. They will not be trying to mimic The Beatles, but adding personal flair to each song. “The musicians on stage are the ‘wrecking crew’ of local music. They’ve been bringing their A-game to every rehearsal since February,” he said about his talented assemblage. “More than 50 musicians participate as the framework for BeatleCUSE, and it organically comes together. It’s a spiritual thing.” Familiar non-Syracuse faces will also join in the fun. Denny Laine, founding member of the Moody Blues and Wings, will add to the show with songs from The Magnificent Moodies (1965), including “Go Now.” The Animals’ original guitarist Hilton Valentine will wail away on his riff-heavy hits “The House of the Rising Sun” and “We Gotta Get Outta This Place.” A portion of the concert’s sales will go to the nonprofit Carol M. MIKE ZITO WHEELS ONTO THE DINO STAGE

A lot has happened for Mike Zito in the past two years. Since his last Syracuse visit in 2014, Zito has released two albums, Songs From the Road and Keep Coming Back. He left the Devon Allman-Cyrille Neville supergroup Royal Southern Brotherhood, worked with a new producer, started a podcast, and has taken a new approach to his latest album, one he describes as “more band- and song-oriented.” Some things have remained the same, however. Zito is 12 years sober, which he is open about in interviews and his songs. And he still believes in the music grind. “Being a musician is like starting a business,” he says. “It’s like opening a small store. Sometimes you just need to open the doors. Once you do that, find out what people want you to put in the store, see what people like that you do. Stop talking about it and just do it.” The musicmaker returns to Syracuse this week with his band, Mike Zito and The Wheel, also featuring Jimmy Carpenter, Scott Sutherland and Rob Lee. The outfit will play Thursday, March 31, 7 p.m., at Upstairs at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, 246 W. Willow St., as part of a fundraiser for the New York State Blues Festival. Tickets are $20. Visit nysbluesfest.com for information. The group is currently touring in support of Keep Coming Back, released last fall. “I’m always trying different things,” Zito says of the record. “I really came up as a blues guitar player and somewhere along the way I got into songwriting and producing. (Zito produced three of blues singer Samantha Fish’s albums.) I decided to try coming from that aspect. “Lots of times you record with studio musicians, but with Keep Coming Back I picked the band. It’s song-oriented material. It’s rock, country, not just blues. Rather than just playing guitar, I let the guitar accompany me. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.” The result is a new type of album for Zito. While it still captures the energy of his past blues-rockers, it also has a modern polish, one that makes some songs seem more pop-oriented (“Get Busy Living”), others strike a country twang

(“I Was Drunk”) and several sound like something Bruce Springsteen might pen (“Girl From Liberty”). Zito credits producer Trina Shoemaker with much of that new energy. “She certainly didn’t come from the blues world at all,” he says of the Grammy-winning producer. “She brought a lot of pop sensibility to the arrangements and mixing. She really made them sound almost like pop radio, really modern and really cool. In the past, it was like throw up some mikes and get a good recording, as live as possible. Although we did a lot of this album live, too, it sounds more modern.” Beside the CD’s pop attitude, there’s also a noteworthy sincerity at work. Zito’s lyrics talk about the human condition in the most honest way — through his own

3.30.16 - 4.6.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

experiences. He doesn’t shy from vices and victories and even brought musician friend Anders Osborne on board for “I Was Drunk.” Osborne, who is also sober, could relate to the subject matter. “Getting sober had a big impact on me,” Zito says. “When I got back into playing music after getting clean, it was like I didn’t have anything to write about before. Suddenly I could talk about recovery, spirituality, my own experiences. It seemed like it clicked right away. “People always relate to honest. It’s a big part of who I am as an artist. I’m not creating a new style of music. I’m not playing my instrument better than anyone. I have none of that to offer. But I do have sincere honesty and I’m comfortable with it. A lot of artists aren’t because they ar-

en’t comfortable with themselves. At this point in my life, if my story of addiction is the most embarrassing thing, it’s not. It’s an asset, not as a sales point, but as who I am.” Zito notes that people often talk to him about what they or their children are going through. “It’s a relatable point,” he says. He’s also made an effort to be more accessible through various mediums. Zito started the Blues Podcast, which lets people into his world in a new way. “I talk a lot,” Zito says. “It’s just me. I talk about blues news, new releases, who’s on the charts. I play songs, talk about the artists, do 10- to 15-minute interviews with different artists. I grab people and interview them with my phone. I’m lucky to have that access.” The first three episodes, available at thebluespodcast.com, feature Tab Benoit, Samantha Fish and Devon Allman. Within just two weeks, those episodes reached nearly 5,000 downloads. “I’ve been wanting to do it for a few years,” he says. “I made a commitment at the beginning of this year to put a lot of content out and I’m doing it. Content is king.” As his band tries new ways to connect to fans and new approaches to recording, Zito still adheres to the music basics that he has relied on for decades. “I know there are many different ways to find success today that were not avenues available when I was young,” he says. “You couldn’t get a YouTube video to go viral and get calls to do something. That was not available. “So I continue to plug away at the old way. It’s the 25-year plan, but it works: Make original music, make a good product and then go play and sell it at shows. Play other people’s music that people know along with yours. You need a good home base, but then you need to drive. Open for people, play for free to get your foot in the door to make a personal relationship. “And music is certainly important, but so is being nice and professional. That’s where long-term success comes from. People invest in you. They like you. They believe in you. Word hard. That goes way beyond talent. If people are assholes, people usually don’t want to work with them. When people ask me how to do it, I say, ‘Why are you talking? Just go do it.’ It’s that easy.” SNT

Wright uses more than 30 characters - all played by one actor - to piece together Charlotte’s controversial life. SIDEWALK

SCENES The evocative street photography of Helen Levitt is on view at the Everson

T

By Carl Mellor his winter the Everson Museum of Art is focusing on street photography, displaying images taken in 1890s Paris, 1930s Harlem, 1960s Syracuse and other locales.

The main attraction, Helen Levitt: In the Street, showcases an artist who shot New York City streets for almost 70 years, creating poignant and humorous photos referencing people, place and the feel of city life. A companion show, featuring works by 22 artists, touches on street photographers over a 100-year period. Levitt’s one-woman exhibit demonstrates how she approached city streets with fresh eyes and an ability to avoid cliches. There are several images of children behaving just as children do. Levitt photographed three children in masks near the front door of an apartment building, a group of children looking across a street at bubbles floating in the air, and a very young child heading back to her mother’s embrace. One of her images portrays a curbside scene in which children investigate a broken mirror. Two of them shift through shards, two hold the mirror’s now empty frame, and a little boy appears to drive his bike through the frame. In these and other images, Levitt interpreted everyday scenes, documenting how ordinary people used public space. In one photo, two women discuss a day’s events. In another, an elderly woman sits on a stoop with a cane near her. That image simply depicts a moment in her life. Many of the photos were shot during 1930s and 1940s, but Levitt kept shooting during subsequent decades. A 1977 photo portrays a scene in which people come together for a moment. A man is in a

3.30.16 - 4.6.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

phone booth, a woman stands just outside it, and a third person is near a mailbox. In the foreground, a street vendor hands a snow cone to a customer whose torso didn’t make in into the image. Thus, only the customer’s hand is visible. Levitt also took photos in New Hampshire and Mexico, and the exhibition includes a few of those images but also makes it clear that this was a minor aspect of her work. She concentrated mostly on New York City streets and the people wandering along them, building a substantial artistic career. The group exhibit, From Paris to Syracuse, encompasses more than 60 images of street photography from the collections of the Everson Museum and Light Work Gallery. It provides a historical perspective by moving from Eugene Atget’s 1898 shot of tar workers repairing a Paris street to Aaron Suskind’s documentary-style photos of Harlem residents during the 1930s to images created during the last 30 years. And an extensive portfolio makes it possible to document a range of artistic approaches. For example, Jon Reis’ shot of two women crossing a city street captures the precise movement when one of them steps over a manhole cover. Steam blows in the air, and it looks like the woman is being swept away. Elsewhere, Toren Beasley’s “When We Were Cool” portrays three African-American youth in a tight, intimate shot. In contrast, Michael Spano’s wide-angle

shot of four street musicians shows them playing in a city setting with no one around. There’s an illusion of a neighborhood abandoned by other people. Moreover, the exhibit presents pieces by well-known artists: Robert Doisneau’s depiction of a carousel on a Paris street deluged by rain; an image of a woman in front of a restaurant as seen through the lens of Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo; Garry Winogrand’s shot of a man receiving money from a passer-by. Finally, the show includes images by photographers who have depicted local scenes. The New York State Fair is prime territory for street photographers, and it’s fitting that From Paris to Syracuse includes a photo by Bruce Gilden, who interprets the flow of human traffic at the fair. Simpson Kalisher, from 1968 to 1973, took dozens of photos in Syracuse culminating in a series, “The City Seen,” exhibited at the Everson in 2001. He has several images in the current exhibit; they depict a Veteran’s Day parade, a scene on the South Side, and a young couple walking down Marshall Street on a sunny day. In addition, Syracuse New Times photography editor Michael Davis has created a portfolio of street photos taken in Syracuse, Boston, Oakland and other cities. He has several images in the exhibition, with the best portraying three men walking down the street. The first two each hold a phone to a right ear while the third presses a phone to his left ear. The photo is whimsical and incisive as it comments on our times. Helen Levitt: In the Street, curated by the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Ga., is clearly worthwhile in itself. It does a fine job of presenting Levitt’s work and communicating her passion for photography and for life in New York City. However, running the show in concert with a survey-style exhibit expands the conversation, allows viewers to get a better sense of street photography. And it demonstrates that both the Everson Museum and the Light Work Gallery have a variety of top-notch images in their collections. Levitt’s solo exhibit is on display through May 8 at the Everson Museum, 401 Harrison St. From Paris to Syracuse wraps up May 15. The museum is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.; Thursdays, noon to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and free for museum members, children age 12 and under, and active members of the U.S. military. OPEN SEASON FOR ROADSIDE MENUS

Spring isn’t around the corner anymore. It’s here! The ground is muddy and the air is still chilly, but ice cream stands, driveins and seasonal eateries are opening for the season and outdoor dining will soon be an option. Here are some signs of the season, food-wise, in Central New York. The Ice Cream Stand, 7265 Buckley Road, North Syracuse. The new kid on the block, located next to Chuck Hafner’s Farmer’s Market and CoreLife Eatery, opens Friday, April 1. The Ice Cream Stand will feature soft-serve ice cream, hard-pack ice cream (from Gifford’s) and Recess Coffee. Down the road, owner Amanda Hughes plans to make her own homemade ice cream. Daily hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Call 458-4848 or visit theicecreamstand.com. Gannon’s Isle, 1525 Valley Drive. This fixture in Syracuse’s Valley neighborhood opened for the season March 5. If you’re a diehard fan, you’ve probably already stopped in for your favorite flavor of homemade hard ice cream, like Chocolate Raspberry Truffle, Sea Salt Caramel or Almond Bark. Now that it’s almost April, why not try the soft-serve, sherbet or a sundae? For Valley information, call 469-7411 or visit gannonsicecream. com. Gannon’s also operates a downtown location (401 S. Salina St., 214-8477) and an Onondaga Hill outlet (4800 McDonald Road, 299-7048). Sno Top, 315 Fayette St., Manlius. Sno Top is a favorite local destination, a mid-century landmark on the Manlius main drag (Route 92). Check out the retro building and queue up — there’s almost always a line — for soft-serve ice cream, including award-winning black raspberry or a black raspberry-vanilla twist, or a classic sundae, or try plenty more choices. Sno Top opened for the season March 19 and keeps serving through late September. Call 682-8582 or visit sno-top.com. Rudy’s Lakeside Drive-In, 78 County Route 89, Oswego. Rudy’s opened for its 70th season earlier in March and still packs people in, even though it can be downright brisk next to Lake Ontario. The family restaurant is noted for its burgers, Texas hots and fried fish. Spring hours are Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to

14

9 p.m. Rudy’s will be open every day starting in May. Call 3432671 or visit rudyshot.com. The Restaurant at Elderberry Pond, 3728 Center Street Road, Auburn. The elegant farm-to-table restaurant on an organic farm between Skaneateles and Auburn opened for the season March 18. Early spring menu items include a fresh spinach salad, with bacon raised and cured on the farm and a warm bacon dressing; a savory spring tart with scallops, leeks and hardy spring greens; root vegetables from the fall harvest and the farm’s own pasture-raised meats. Lunch and dinner are served Wednesdays through Sundays; the restaurant stays open through December. Call 252-6025 or visit elderberrypond.com. Skan-Ellus Drive-In, 1659 Route 20 (intersection of Lee-Mulroy Road), Skaneateles. If you’ve been waiting all winter for a trip to Skan-Ellus, the time is at hand. The drivein opened for the season March 24. The menu features soups, sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and more. What’s for dessert? Soft-serve ice cream, or maybe a shake. Call 685-8280 or visit skanellusdrivein.com. John’s Seafood Truck. Springtime means John’s Seafood is back at its regular locations: Wednesday afternoons in Fayetteville, at the corner of Route 5 and Highbridge Street, in front of Fayetteville Dry Cleaners; and Fridays, 3 to 6 p.m., at Henry’s Farm Stand, 2313 Genesee St. (Route 5), Chittenango. John’s is based in Cortland and sources shrimp, scallops, haddock, clams, oysters, lobster and more for Central New York seafood lovers. Call (607) 423-1189 or 256-3866 (Henry’s).

Boom Boom Mex Mex, 3263 Howlett Hill Road, Camillus. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, taco salad, combo platters, flan — all in a no-frills atmosphere at this seasonal eatery. Gino Laurenzo assumed ownership from longtime owners Tom and Lupe Bryan in September and keeps the place open through early December. Call 673-1151 or visit facebook.com/BoomBoom-Mex-Mex-104951179548776. Mac’s Drive-In, 1166 Waterloo-Geneva Road, Waterloo. Before there was the drive-thru, there was the drive-in, with curbside service. Mac’s opened for its 56th season last week and still has curb service. Go for a root beer float, stay for a burger, sausage sandwich or fish in a basket. Call 539-3064 or visit macsdrivein.net. Spring Brunch Series. David Breeden, head winemaker at Sheldrake Point Winery, kicks off the Winemaker’s Brunch Series at Aster Pantry & Parlor, 116 Walton St., on Sunday, April 3, noon. The series, sponsored by Farmshed CNY, will feature a four-course brunch prepared by chef Rich Strub. Each course will be paired with a wine from Sheldrake’s portfolio. Save the dates for two more brunches in the series: April 24 and May 29. Tickets are $55 per person for individual brunches and $150 for the series. TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) “People only get

really interesting when they start to rattle the bars of their cages,” says philosopher Alain de Botton. If that’s true, Taurus, you must be on the verge of becoming very interesting. Metaphorically speaking, you’re not just rattling the bars of your cage. You’re also smacking your tin cup against the bars and trying to saw through them with your plastic knife. APRIL FOOL! I lied. You’re not literally in a prison cell. And I got a bit carried away with the metaphor. But there is a grain of truth to what I said. You are getting close to breaking free of at least some of your mind-forged manacles. And it’s making you more attractive and intriguing.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) If I had to decide

what natural phenomenon you most closely resemble right now, I’d consider comparing you to a warm, restless breeze or a busily playful dolphin. But my first choice would be the mushrooms known as Schizophyllum commune. They’re highly adaptable: able to go dormant when the weather’s dry and spring to life when rain comes. They really get around, too, making their homes on every continent except Antarctica. But the main reason I’d link you with them is that they come in more than 28,000 different sexes. Their versatility is unprecedented. APRIL FOOL! I exaggerated a bit. It’s true that these days you’re polymorphous and multifaceted and well-rounded. But you’re probably not capable of expressing 28,000 varieties of anything. you’re seeking won’t come in the form you’re expecting,” warns Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami. If that’s true, why bother? Why expend all your precious yearning if the net result won’t even satisfy your yearning? That’s why I advise you to ABANDON YOUR BELOVED PLANS! Save your energy for trivial wishes. That way you won’t be disappointed when they are fulfilled in unanticipated ways. APRIL FOOL! I was messing with you. It’s true that what you want won’t arrive in the form you’re expecting. But I bet the result will be even better than what you expected.

LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your advice for the

near future comes from poet Stephen Dunn. “If the Devil sits down,” he says, “offer companionship, tell her you’ve always admired her magnificent, false moves.” I think that’s an excellent plan, Libra! Maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to make the acquaintance of many different devils with a wide variety of magnificent, false moves. APRIL FOOL! I lied. In fact, I think you should avoid contact with all devils, no matter how enticing they might be. Now is a key time to surround yourself with positive influences.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) In 1841, a British medical journal prescribed the following remedy for the common cold: “Nail a hat on the wall near the foot of your bed, then retire to that bed, and drink spirits until you see two hats.” My expert astrological analysis reveals that this treatment is likely to cure not just the sniffles, but also any other discomforts you’re suffering from, whether physical or emotional or spiritual. So I hope you own a hat, hammer and nails. APRIL FOOL! I lied. The method I suggested probably won’t help alleviate what ails you. But here’s a strategy that might: Get rid of anything that’s superfluous, rotten, outdated or burdensome. SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) To begin

your oracle, I’ll borrow the words of author Ray Bradbury: “May you be in love every day for the next 20,000 days, and out of that love, remake a world.” I have reason to believe that this optimistic projection has a good chance of coming true for you. Imagine it, Sagittarius: daily swoons of delight and rapture from now until the year 2071. APRIL FOOL! I lied, sort of. It would be foolish to predict that you’ll be giddy with amorous feelings nonstop for the next 54 years and 10 months. On the other hand, I don’t think it’s unrealistic for you to expect a lot of that sweet stuff over the course of the next three weeks.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) “I am tired of

being brave,” groaned Anne Sexton in one of her poems. “I’m sick of following my dreams,” moaned comedian Mitch Hedberg, adding, “I’m just going to ask my dreams where they’re going and hook up with them later.” In my opinion, Capricorn, you have every right to unleash grumbles similar to Hedberg’s and Sexton’s. APRIL FOOL! The advice I just gave you is only half-correct. It’s true that you need and deserve a respite from your earnest struggles. Now is indeed a good time to take a break so you can recharge your spiritual batteries. But don’t you dare feel sorry for yourself.

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) In 1991, hikers in

pilgrimage, aren’t you? It might be time to shave your head, sell your possessions, and head out on a long trek to a holy place where you can get back in touch with what the hell you’re doing here on this planet. APRIL FOOL! I was kidding about the head-shaving and possessions-dumping. On the other hand, there might be value in embarking on a less melodramatic pilgrimage. I think you’re ready to seek radical bliss of a higher order -- and get back in touch with what the hell you’re doing here on this planet.

the Italian Alps discovered the well-preserved corpse of a Bronze Age hunter. Buried in the frigid terrain, the man who came to be known as Otzi the Iceman had been there for 5,000 years. Soon the museum that claimed his body began receiving inquiries from women who wanted to be impregnated with Otzi’s sperm. I think this is an apt metaphor for you, Aquarius. Consider the possibility that you might benefit from being fertilized by an influence from long ago. APRIL FOOL! I was just messing with you. It’s true you can generate good mojo by engaging with inspirational influences from the past. But I’d never urge you to be guided by a vulgar metaphor related to Otzi’s sperm.

astrological analysis, you would benefit profoundly from taking a ride in a jet fighter plane 70,000 feet above the earth. In fact, I think you really need to experience weightlessness as you soar faster than the speed of sound. Luckily, there’s an organization, MiGFlug (migflug.com), that can provide you with this healing thrill. (I just hope you can afford the $18,000 price tag.) APRIL FOOL! I do in fact think you should treat yourself to unprecedented thrills and transcendent adventures. But I bet you can accomplish that without being quite so extravagant.

fight the monster? Do you have the courage and strength and stamina and guile to overcome the ugly beast that’s blocking the path to the treasure? If not, turn around and head back to your comfort zone until you’re better prepared. APRIL FOOL! I lied. There is a monster, but it’s not the literal embodiment of a beastly adversary. Rather, it’s inside you. It’s an unripe part of yourself that needs to be taught and tamed and cared for. Until you develop a better relationship with it, it will just keep testing you. (P.S. Now would be a good time to develop a better relationship with it.)

I mention this, Pisces, because I’d like to propose a list of words you should forbid to be used in your presence during the coming weeks: “money,” “cash,” “finances,” “loot,” “savings” or “investments.” Why? Because I’m afraid it would be distracting, even confusing or embarrassing, for you to think about these sore subjects right now. APRIL FOOL! I lied. The truth is, now is a perfect time for you to be focused on getting richer quicker.
