Curses, Foiled Again

Leslie Paul Ash, 39, broke into a recycling center in Somerset, England, and stole several scrap items. He remembered to wear a mask at the scene, but he put it on outside, directly in front of a surveillance camera. Investigators easily identified him. After Ash confessed, a magistrate sentenced him to pay 100 pounds ($160): 60 pounds ($96) of which was a “victim surcharge.” (Britain’s Cheddar Valley Gazette) Police in Panama, Okla., charged Brandon Lee Aaron, 27, with statutory rape after his 15-year-old victim identified him by a tattoo of his ex-girlfriend’s name on his penis. (Tulsa World)

Handyman Follies

Canadian authorities deported Tom Rolfe, 24, for fixing cracks in the wall of his girlfriend’s Edmonton apartment. Even though the British man, visiting on a tourist visa, was doing the repairs for free, officials pointed out that immigration rules prohibit tourists from performing any work that a Canadian could be hired to do. Alternate Theory of the Crime

British magistrates cleared Thomas Clark, 28, of voyeurism charges, even after he admitted hiding his phone in the unisex toilet where he worked with the intention of filming other workers at their office in Southgate. He denied taking pictures of women for sexual thrills, insisting he has an extreme phobia of diarrhea and vomit, so he wanted to make sure that no one using the toilet ahead of him had diarrhea or had vomited. “I try to keep the phobia to myself,” Clark testified, saying it began when he was eight. “It got to such a severe stage where I felt completely trapped, with panic attacks, and could only get reassurance by putting my phone in the toilet.” (Britain’s Crawley News) syracusenewtimes.com | 4.27.16 - 5.3.16

TEMPING TOPIC OF PROVOCATIVE PIC

During the nearly three years Gretchen Purser spent as a day laborer, one of her most dangerous assignments was as a traffic control flagger. “I was never trained,” said Purser, a Syracuse University sociologist. “I was supposed to be state-certified. They sent me out with a fake ID card.” She worked, essentially undercover, on construction site cleanup, in kitchens, installing shelves in big box stores, and on eviction crews to research the multibillion-dollar temporary employment industry. “My purpose is to get people to recognize these workers,” said Purser, who is finishing a book, Labor on Demand: Dispatching the Urban Poor. “I want to make visible this huge segment of the labor market and how these agencies are contributing to the precarious nature of work.” Temporary workers are typically paid less than permanent workers (22 percent less, by one account) and have less security, fewer benefits and less of a voice in the workplace. They’re also 50 percent more likely to get hurt at work. A local coalition of labor and community groups is addressing the plight of temporary workers as part of Workers’ Memorial Day and May Day observances. The group will show the 2015 documentary A Day’s Work, which focuses on the story of Day Davis, a 21-year-old Florida man killed on his first day as a temporary worker. Starting a temp agency requires “no regulation, there are no skills, there’s no accrediting process, no formal paperwork that needs to be done,” Dave DeSario, the film’s executive director told Politico in 2015. He said temp agencies are “not conducive to the benefit of workers.” An average of 719 workers each month in Onondaga County are categorized as temporary, with a gross weekly wage of $436, according to the New York State Department of Labor. The state reported having 109,833 temporary workers in the first quarter of 2016. “People are working, but only under these precarious conditions,” Purser said. “Low wage, precarious and dangerous

work is normalized for the people who are most disadvantaged in our society.” A Day’s Work will screen Tuesday, May 3, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Legal Services of Central New York, 221 S. Warren St., No. 300. Admission is free. A panel discussion follows the movie. Also, the CNY Workers Memorial Day Unity Breakfast will take place Saturday, April 29, 8 to 10 a.m., at Pensabene’s Casa Grande, 135 State Fair Blvd. Kevin Ahern, president of the Syracuse Teachers Association, will discuss the threat of violence and its effects on students and school employees. Ahern, who represents 2,800 teachers, in June 2014 cited safety in city schools and “inept implementation” of teacher evaluations and new education standards that led to a 95 percent vote of no confidence in Syracuse City School District Superintendent Sharon Contreras. The breakfast also honors the 34 Central and Northern New York workers killed on the job or who died from injuries or diseases sustained at work since January 2015. The group will also provide awards to workers and advocates for courage and dedication in working toward workplace safety. Admission to the breakfast is $25. Space is limited; call 218-5708 for information. SNT

FILMIES DROP THEIR SHORTS IN OSWEGO

As the lights dimmed and the first film of the night appeared on the projection screen, Central New York’s response to Sundance and Tribeca was in action: the seventh annual SUNYWide Film Festival, which took place April 8 and 9 at SUNY Oswego. This year’s fest was organized by a SUNY Oswego film class that worked from January to April to produce the two-day spectacle for an appreciative audience. The SUNYWide Film Festival was created in 2009 by Phil Hastings, an associate professor of film at SUNY Fredonia, as a way to showcase SUNY student films. It’s now one of the leading student film festivals in the Northeast, and it’s certainly growing. This year there were 190 short film submissions from 23 campuses, of which 35 were accepted for screening. Organizers expect the 2017 fest to be even bigger when it returns to Oswego for a third consecutive year. If 35 film shorts in two nights seems like a lot, that number should serve to highlight the general enthusiasm of the attending fans or “filmies,” a name created by Amy Shore, festival organizer and cinema professor at SUNY Oswego. Everyone in the audience had a clear stake in film, whether it was an infatuation with cinema or a role in one of the student films. Joshua Adams, director of this year’s fest and also a cinema professor at SUNY Oswego, speaks with energy about the work his students accomplished. “The festival engages the community,” he said. “It’s a celebration.” Each film ranged in length from five to 15 minutes, with entries submitted in four categories: documentary, experimental, fiction and animation. Festival jurors included screenwriter Jim Jennewein (The Flintstones, Richie Rich), actress Nadege August and producer Grace Leeson. One of the most enlightening aspects of the festival, however, was the chance to be around the filmmakers themselves, as the actors, directors and screenwriters sat back and enjoyed the product of their pains. The budding auteurs explained their process or discussed the difficulties in filming their shorts. One group of

Fest guests included producer Christine Vachon.

students from SUNY Buffalo shot their entire film in Jordan (the country, not the village on Route 5), capturing life within a Syrian refugee camp. Another group, from SUNY New Paltz, shot their entire film in French. Nobody understands the struggles of filmmaking better than Christine Vachon, a keynote speaker at the festival. Vachon is an American producer with more than 20 films under her belt including Poison, which won the 1991 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival, and her recent film Carol, director Todd Haynes’ drama which was nominated for six Academy Awards. Not surprisingly, the theme of community surfaced again in Vachon’s address. “You’re building a community,” she said, “especially now that the film festival is being so well received.” Vachon had a point. Everyone at the festival — from student filmmakers, to supportive friends and family members, to avid movie buffs — were there to appreciate film, as the SUNYWide Film Festival is quickly becoming a favored home for “filmies” throughout the statewide college system. By Margaret McCormick “It’s the perfect pairing with my education and experience,’’ Hughes says of her decision to open the Ice Cream Stand. “I love food and I love being with people. Food is such a connector.’’ Hughes grew up on nearby Allen Road, attended area schools and has fond childhood memories visiting the seasonal ice cream stand at Hafner’s. “We would go there after our wins,” she recalls, “and sometimes even after our losses.’’ She plans to keep the Ice Cream Stand open into December. Hafner’s does a brisk business at the holidays, she says, and Central New York’s appetite for ice cream extends beyond the warm weather months. Summer is for long lines at the window, long days and doing and learning as much as she can. During the winter, Hughes says, she’ll recharge.

CONE APPETIT AT ICE CREAM STAND

manda Hughes likes the verb “indulge” and uses it a lot. She signs her emails with it, hashtags it on social media and plans to have it embossed on the walls of her new business.

“I looked it up,’’ Hughes said last week. “It means to enjoy something.’’ Hughes is indulging her entrepreneurial streak at the Ice Cream Stand, which is sandwiched between CoreLife Eatery and Chuck Hafner’s Farmers Market and Garden Center, at Taft and Buckley roads. The Ice Cream Stand opened April 1 — at about the same time winter decided to revisit Central New York — and has been doing a steady business as spring arrives in earnest. It’s a small space, with two exterior walk-up windows (next door to Core) and an inside window accessible from one of the Hafner’s greenhouses. The greenhouse window is also accessible from the back of Core. Hughes is starting this season off simply, until she gets her arms around training and managing a staff, the logistics of running a small business and keeping an eye on the weather — which can have a huge impact on ice cream traffic. The menu features about a dozen flavors of Gifford’s hard ice cream (from Maine), everything from

4.27.16 - 5.3.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

classic vanilla to toasted coconut and Campfire S’mores. There are also fruit sorbets, soft-serve chocolate and vanilla ice cream (or a twist for the indecisive), soft-serve frozen yogurt and Dole Whip soft serve in fruit flavors (dairy free, gluten free, vegan). Sprinkles are available in abundance. You’ll also find sundaes and floats, including root beer floats made with Saranac root beer. In the mood for coffee? There’s Recess coffee — or indulge in a coffee float. Hughes plans to add a short list of smoothies to the menu. Her ultimate goal is to create some of her own homemade ice creams for purchase. Hughes has spent much of her life working in the food industry. Her resume includes stints as a server and bartender. She also has a degree in sociology from Duke University and an MBA in marketing from LIU Brooklyn. When she moved back to Central New York last year, Hughes was looking for a full-time position in her fields, but “not finding exactly the right fit.’’

There’s a place on Otisco Lake with a spectacular view of the lake. If you’ve been around a long time, you may remember it as the Forest Home Hotel. More recently, it was known as Footprints on the Lake and The Overlook. It’s now known as the Lakeside Vista Restaurant. We’re hearing it’s a nice place to indulge in drinks, dinner and Sunday brunch — not to mention the view. The restaurant has been operating on a limited basis since last fall, with Friday and Saturday dinners, Sunday brunches and private functions. Summer hours premiere in May, along with an expanded menu. Dinner will be served Wednesdays and Thursdays, 5 to 9 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, 5 to 10 p.m., with Sunday brunches from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays will also feature live music and a focus on Finger Lakes wines and wineries, with complimentary pours and pairings. And deck seating is bound to be a hot ticket come summer. Lakeside Vista Restaurant is at 2437 Route 174, Marietta. Call 636-1083 or visit lakesidevista.com. Five White House wannabes make their case in the Salt City

N

Photos by Michael Davis

ew York state was truly the center of the universe in April as a quintet of presidential candidates made their campaign rounds ahead of the state’s April 19 primary. The fab five each made pit stops in Central New York, as Syracuse New Times photographer Michael Davis shuttled between their rallies to record their moments in the Salt City spotlight. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton struck first on an April Fool’s Friday with an afternoon visit at the Regional Market. Riding on the Final Four coattails created by the Syracuse University men’s and women’s basketball teams as they vied for national championships that weekend, the former secretary of state, as well as most of her audience, was decked out in orange-hued regalia. Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, for instance, was large and in charge in a T-shirt that read “Real Mayors Wear Orange.” Prior to her F Shed speech, Clinton had earlier stopped at SU’s longtime Varsity Pizza for photo ops with students. Next up was Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who addressed nearly 1,000 supporters at an April 8 town hall meeting held at Le Moyne College’s Henninger Athletic Center. One of those supporters was former Congressman James Walsh, who delivered the Kasich introduction. Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders’ April 12 visit at the Pirro Convention Center took on all the

10

trappings of a much-anticipated rock concert, as the Vermont senator’s local fan base started lining up roughly six hours in advance of his afternoon speech. Local beatboxer Joe Driscoll warmed up the crowd, while actress Rosario Dawson also made an appearance, with Sanders sealing the deal with an inspirational speech that energized the young voters he is courting. In contrast, Republican candidate Ted Cruz fielded a low-key rally April 15 at Cicero’s Driver’s Village. At least Cruz had some fun on his campaign trail during a photo-op moment over a foosball table, as Cruz and campaign aide Bruce Redden amiably squared off with political reporters John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, co-stars of the 2016 primary documentary series The Circus on pay cable’s Showtime. Speaking of circuses, rounding out the pack was Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s April 16 turn at the Pirro Convention Center podium. While the Sanders show came across as a love fest, the Trump rally lured several thousand hardcore admirers inside the center (people with DSLR cameras were barred from entering, however) and a few hundred protesters on the surrounding sidewalks. Emotions were heated as the opposing views collided after the speech, with neither side yielding ground. And it was hard to tell which sidewalk souvenir was scarier: the rubber Trump masks or the anti-Clinton T-shirts that sported the words, “Trump That Bitch!” SNT

For starters, the Merseys also hail from The Beatles’ home base of Liverpool, England. The group — featuring Steven Howard (as Paul McCartney), Mark Bloor (John Lennon), Davis Howard (George Harrison), Brian Ambrose (Ringo Starr) and Tony Cook — grew up as childhood schoolmates. The Merseys even had a residency at the famed Cavern Club nightclub in Liverpool, where The Beatles also gigged during their salad days. Beyond all this, they’re currently touring with Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister, who wrote the autobiography Imagine This: Growing Up with My Brother John Lennon (Hodder & Stoughton, 2011). Baird and the Mersey Beatles will visit Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St., on Thursday, May 5. “We use the word ‘different’ and not ‘better,’” Howard says when talking about the band as a tribute. “We all do it in our own way and we’re all trying to do the same thing: to pay tribute to the greatest band of them all. You can play in your jeans and a T-shirt if this helps you capture the heart and soul of the music. “There is an attitude in Liverpool, and in the people, which is all about ‘keeping it real.’ We respect the original Beatles in the things we say, and we are ourselves. Julia says we are like them because we’re from the same soil. And that’s good enough for me.”

BASKERVILLE:

A SHERLOCK HOLMES ine This. “I wrote it really to put the story straight,” Baird says. “One journalist who had just read it, prior to interviewing me, summed it up beautifully: ‘This isn’t about John, this book is a love letter to your mother.’ Perfect. I have written this story in order to confirm or deny the information already available. Most of it is wrong and written by ‘experts.’” Baird has toured with the group to the United States three times as well as Sweden. She agrees the home connection provides an advantage. “They are natives of Liverpool,” she says. “They have grown up in our city, which, like all cities, has its very own DNA. They have heard the same conversations, attended the same schools, played in the same streets, worked at the same growing-up jobs, drank in the same pubs. They have been nurtured in the same soil as The Beatles and it shows.” The group will perform in chronological order songs from several different Beatles eras in the show, accompanied by frequent costume changes and a slide show. They’re also brimming with excitement to return to their favorite place to tour. “I love America best of all, and I’m not just saying that,” Howard says. “The people are friendly and the country is vast and beautiful. I also love Malaysia, Norway, Spain and Italy. But my favorite place to play is Liverpool. There’s no place like home.” SNT

The group originally started in Liverpool as Tube, a cover band that played Beatles and Doors tracks for about 18 months. Howard eventually left to join Yard Dog while the remaining members formed the vocal band Walkabout. But within a few years, the friends realized playing together was inevitable. “We knew we couldn’t shake each other off and I put out the idea of just playing Beatles songs because that was my favorite bit of the set every night,” Howard recalls. “I felt playing Dire Straits or even The Clash was just taking up time where a Beatles song could be.” In 1999 the lineup first rehearsed as the Mersey Beatles with a Fab Four focus. The Cavern Club soon took notice, with the band starting a residency in 2002 that would last for the next 10 years. Meanwhile, the band also met Baird, a director at Cavern City tours, on an Australian tour in 2004, as the shared love of The Beatles sealed the friendship. “Having become friends with Julia, we got to hear some firsthand accounts of The Beatles and John,” Howard says. “Her memories of the early days are fascinating. However, it’s the relationship, which John and his sisters shared with their mother, which is the real heart of the family story. That relationship gives some insight into the reasons behind John’s drive and attitudes and his struggle to come to terms with losing such an amazing woman.” It’s also the reason Baird penned Imag-

NATIVE HERITAGE IN MOVIE SPOTLIGHT Films about the Onondaga Nation on view at this weekend’s SpringFest By Renée K. Gadoua The Good Mind.

16

A

bout halfway through director Gwendolen Cates’ beautiful documentary The Good Mind comes an unusually intimate look at life on the Onondaga Nation. Asa Shenandoah is talking about her 2-year-old son, Hadowaets, whose Native name means “he hunts.” The boy’s daycare teacher asked why he dances in a circle. That’s the way the Onondaga dance, Shenandoah told the teacher.

She sees it as evidence that her son will carry on Onondaga traditions. “He’s getting it,” Shenandoah says in the documentary. “It’s a part of who he is.” The scene ends with a shot of the boy holding a toddler-size lacrosse stick. In another touching scene, Onondaga Chief Jake Edwards talks with his granddaughter, Kaidence Cronin, as she spells her Indian name on a smartphone. Edwards, too, takes pride in his descendant’s interest in her Native heritage. The two moments highlight the message of documentary: The Onondaga are still here, their culture will endure and their story is worth telling. The Good Mind will screen at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre on Saturday, April 30, during the Syracuse International Film Festival’s four-day SpringFest 2016. It’s one of four films with Native American themes that are part of the festival’s third run. Cates and Onondaga Nation representatives will participate in a panel discussion after the 12:30 p.m. showing. “It’s a glimpse into an international world in our backyard,” Mike Massurin, the festival’s executive director, said of The Good Mind. “We should be proud that they’re here.” Also showing on Saturday are two short films that address Native issues. My Identity, by Yasmin Mistry, is about a young Native-American Caucasian girl who converts to Islam. Iroquois Creation 4.27.16 - 5.3.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Story is an animated film by Cat Ashworth. Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Joanne Shenandoah, a member of the Wolf Clan of the Oneida Nation, narrates the film. And Sunday, May 1, 1 p.m., will feature a screening of America’s First Sport, Dennis Deninger’s film about lacrosse. Cates appreciates access she was allowed on the Onondaga Nation. “I knew and completely respected that people would need time to know me and get to trust me,” she said. “The key word is respect and the key action is listening.” The New York City filmmaker first visited the Onondaga Nation when researching Indian Country (Grove Press, 2001), a collection of photos of Native Americans. Publishers Weekly called the book “heartening in its honest, thoughtful treatment of individuals and their cultures.” After a 20-year photography career, Cates turned to filmmaking. Her first film, Water Flowing Together, offered a portrait of Jock Soto, a Navajo who retired from the New York City Ballet in 2005 after a 24-year dancing career. It aired in 2008 on the PBS series Independent Lens. In 2012, Onondaga Nation leaders asked Cates to document the Iroquois Nationals’ trip to Finland for the Federation of International Lacrosse Championships. The Iroquois men’s under-19 team made history, besting Team USA 15-13, the first field lacrosse

game in which the Iroquois Nationals beat the U.S. team in international field competition. Cates also documented the summer 2013 Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign, a project to illustrate the continuing relevance of the 1613 agreement between the Haudenosaunee and the first European settlers, the Dutch. Haudenosaunee, other Natives and allies paddled together from Onondaga Creek to the Hudson River as a reminder of the ancient commitment to peace and friendship. The resulting film, Guswenta: Renewing the Two Row Wampum, was named best short film at the Rated SR Socially Relevant Film Fest in New York City. The idea for The Good Mind evolved as Cates learned more about the Haudenosaunee’s efforts to keep alive their traditions despite the loss of their land and attacks on their culture and way of life. “I have enormous respect for the Haudenosaunee and for the integrity of the Onondagas,” Cates said. “They have such dignity in the face of everything that’s happened to them. I hope that people take note of that.” The film premiered in February at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Missoula, Mont. It was among 33 international films screened at the April 21-April 24 San Francisco Earth Day Film Festival, and will be shown at Cinemapolis in Ithaca (date to be announced) and the Lake Placid Film Forum in June. The Good Mind’s title refers to the

Haudenosaunee philosophy and way of life. “If the good mind prevails, peace prevails,” Onondaga Nation faithkeeper Oren Lyons says early in the film. “To me, the good mind means integrity, compassion and respect for all living things,” Cates said. “It’s trying to live your life in a way that reflects your values.” The 70-minute film shows stunning aerial views of Central New York, Onondaga Lake and the Onondaga Nation, the 7,300acre territory south of Syracuse. It features Lyons, Tadodaho Sid Hill, Chief Jake Edwards and others sharing memories and describing Haudenosaunee history and philosophy. In 1779, Gen. George Washington ordered troops to kill Natives and take their land in what Frieda Jacques, Onondaga clan mother, calls a genocide attempt. “We’ve gone through a great deal, but as we go, we get stronger,” she says in the film. “We’re pretty stubborn, so we’re still here.” This month marks two years since longtime legal representative Joe Heath filed a petition on the Onondaga Nation’s behalf with the Organization of American States’ Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. That came after the Supreme Court in 2013 rejected the Onondaga Nation’s land rights action, claiming that New York illegally has taken 2.5 million acres from the Onondaga Nation since 1788. “The Onondagas certainly are not going to rest until they get some justice for their land,” Heath says in the film. The Good Mind hits on sovereignty, the Great Law of Peace, the Haudenosaunee influence on American democracy, the Doctrine of Discover, indigenous rights, environmental stewardship and lacrosse. It’s also a love letter to a way of life. “Our Creation Story begins with the Earth,” Asa Shenandoah says in the film. “Our sacred places are right here. That’s an ingrained part of who we are, to worry about the environment and how people are treating the Earth.” Cates offers a counterpoint to the justifiable anger and frustration over centuries of mistreatment in the extraordinary personal moments she captures. In scenes with young children, viewers see the vulnerability, affection and hope of the Onondaga people. Like the Onondaga elders she documents, Cates is optimistic about the future of the Haudenosaunee. “There’s no question their culture will endure,” she said. “Like so many Native people, they’ve been invisible. That needs to change.” SNT Lina Wertmuller.

Clockwise from top, Sid Hill and Oren Lyons with the 1794 Canandaigua Treaty Belt; actor Mark Ruffalo with Onondaga Clan mother Frieda Jacques; and Lyons, Leonardo DiCaprio and Hill during the Peoples Climate March in New York City, September 2014.

THE REST OF SPRINGFEST SpringFest is the younger sibling of the larger Syracuse International Film Festival that is presented in the fall. The first SpringFest featured seven films; this year it includes 15 films, as well as the Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty Showcase. Local music makers will also participate with shows at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre: The McGriff Brothers perform Friday, April 29, 5:15 p.m., and the Golden Novak Band takes the stage Saturday, April 30, 5 p.m. Every film in the festival has a Central New York connection. “There’s a lot of great films and filmmakers locally, and we want to support them,” said Mike Massurin, the festival’s executive director. “We think Central New York is poised for bigger things with filmmakers.” Highlights include: A Veteran’s Story, a documentary by local social worker David Gandino about 90-year-old Patrick Heagerty (father of Michael Heagerty, the Palace’s owner) and his World War II experiences. (Sunday, May 1, 3:30 p.m.) Behind the White Glasses, by Valerio Ruiz, in an 80-minute documentary about the filmmaker and writer Lina Wertmüller, the first woman to receive an Academy Award nomination for best director for Seven Beauties (1975). The local connection? Syracuse University students, studying with Owen Shapiro, festival co-founder and artistic

director, interviewed Harvey Keitel, who starred in Wertmuller’s 1986 melodrama Camorra: A Story of Streets, Women and Crime. (Friday, April 29, 7 p.m.) Garwin, by SU professor Richard Breyer and SU grad Anand Kamalakar, a look at the life of Richard Garwin, a physicist who was the author of the design used in the first hydrogen bomb in 1952. (Saturday, April 30, 3:15 p.m.) Irrefutable Proof, by director Ziad Hamzeh, screenwriter Richard Castellane and cinematographer Robert Draper, begins with a car crash preventing Jeanine Markham, a world-renowned astrophysicist, from delivering a controversial lecture about her findings. The film features scenes shot at SU and the Landmark Theatre. The crew had planned to shoot a fiery crash in Armory Square, but after Syracuse officials in 2015 requested $20,000 to provide police and fire vehicles for the scene, the filmmakers shot the scene in Utica. (Saturday, April 30, 9 p.m.) SpringFest 2016 begins Thursday, April 28, 7 p.m., with a screening of Sidewalk Stories, director Charles Lane’s acclaimed 1989 remake of Charles Chaplin’s The Kid, at the Palace Theatre, 2384 James St. Oneday single tickets are $10; one-day couples tickets are $15; a four-day single festival pass is $25; and a four-day couples festival pass is $40. about to present may be controversial. It contains advice that most astrologers would never dare to offer an Aries. But I believe you are more receptive than usual to this challenge, and I am also convinced that you especially need it right now. Are you ready to be pushed further than I have ever pushed you? Study this quote from novelist Mark Z. Danielewski: “Passion has little to do with euphoria and everything to do with patience. It is not about feeling good. It is about endurance. Like patience, passion comes from the same Latin root: pati.”

of your cycle when you’ll be rewarded for your freshness and originality. The more you cultivate a “beginner’s mind,” the smarter you will be. What you want will become more possible to the degree that you shed everything you think you know about what you want. As the artist Henri Matisse said, if a truly creative painter hopes to paint a rose, he or she “first has to forget all the roses that were ever painted.” What would be the equivalent type of forgetting in your own life?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) “Am I still a hero if

the only person I save is myself?” asks poet B. Damani. If you posed that question to me right now, I would reply, “Yes, Gemini. You are still a hero if the only person you save is yourself.” If you asked me to elaborate, I’d say, “In fact, saving yourself is the only way you can be a hero right now. You can’t rescue or fix or rehabilitate anyone else unless and until you can rescue and fix and rehabilitate yourself.” If you pushed me to provide you with a hint about how you should approach this challenge, I’d be bold and finish with a flourish: “Now I dare you to be the kind of hero you have always feared was beyond your capacity.”

CANCER (June 21-July 22) “We need people

in our lives with whom we can be as open as possible,” declares psychotherapist Thomas Moore. I agree. Our mental health thrives when we can have candid conversations with free spirits who don’t censor themselves and don’t expect us to water down what we say. This is always true, of course, but it will be an absolute necessity for you in the coming weeks. So I suggest that you do everything you can to put yourself in the company of curious minds that love to hear and tell the truth. Look for opportunities to express yourself with extra clarity and depth. “To have real conversations with people may seem like such a simple, obvious suggestion,” says Moore, “but it involves courage and risk.”

helicopter pilot as he descended from the sky and tried to land his vehicle on the small deck of a Danish ship patrolling the North Sea. The weather was blustery and the seas were choppy. The task looked at best strenuous, at worst impossible. The pilot hovered patiently as the ship pitched wildly. Finally there was a brief calm, and he seized on that moment to settle down safely. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you may have a metaphorically similar challenge in the coming days. To be successful, all you have to do is be alert for the brief calm, and then act with swift, relaxed decisiveness.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “Show me a man

who isn’t a slave,” wrote the Roman philosopher Seneca. “One is a slave to sex, another to money, another to ambition; all are slaves to hope or fear.” Commenting on Seneca’s thought, blogger Ryan Holiday says, “I’m disappointed in my enslavement to self-doubt, to my resentment toward those that I dislike, to the power that the favor and approval of certain people hold over me.” What about you, Virgo? Are there any emotional states or bedeviling thoughts or addictive desires that you’re a slave to? The coming weeks will be a favorable time to emancipate yourself. As you do, remember this: There’s a difference between being com-

Marie

pulsively driven by a delusion and lovingly devoted to a worthy goal.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “Everyone who has

ever built a new heaven first found the power to do so in his own hell.” That noble truth was uttered by Libran philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, and I bet it will be especially meaningful for most of you during the rest of 2016. The bad news is that in the past few months you’ve had to reconnoiter your own hell a little more than you would have liked, even if it has been pretty damn interesting. The good news is that these explorations will soon be winding down. The fantastic news is that you are already getting glimpses of how to use what you’ve been learning. You’ll be well-prepared when the time comes to start constructing a new heaven.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “Zugzwang” is a German-derived word used in chess and other games. It refers to a predicament in which a player cannot possibly make a good move. Every available option will weaken his or her position. I propose that we coin a new word that means the opposite of zugzwang: “zugfrei,” which shall hereafter signify a situation in which every choice you have in front of you is a positive or constructive one; you cannot make a wrong move. I think this captures the essence of the coming days for you, Scorpio. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “We have to

learn how to live with our frailties,” poet Stanley Kunitz told The Paris Review. “The best people I know are inadequate and unashamed.” That’s the keynote I hope you will adopt in the coming weeks. No matter how strong and capable you are, no matter how hard you try to be your best, there are ways you fall short of perfection. And now is a special phase of your astrological cycle when you can learn a lot about how to feel at peace with that fact.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) How do plants reproduce? They generate seeds that are designed to travel. Dandelion and orchid seeds are so light they can drift long distances through the air. Milkweed seeds are a bit heavier, but are easily carried by the wind. Foxglove and sycamore seeds are so buoyant they can float on flowing water. Birds and other animals serve as transportation for burdock seeds, which hook onto feather and fur. Fruit seeds may be eaten by animals and later excreted, fully intact, far from their original homes. I hope this meditation stimulates you to think creatively about dispersing your own metaphorical seeds, Capricorn. It’s time for you to vividly express your essence, make your mark, spread your influence. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “It is a fault to

wish to be understood before we have made ourselves clear to ourselves,” said philosopher Simone Weil. I hope that prod makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, Aquarius. I hope it motivates you to get busy investigating some of your vague ideas and fuzzy self-images and confused intentions. It will soon be high time for you to ask for more empathy and acknowledgment from those whose opinions matter to you. You’re overdue to be more appreciated, to be seen for who you really are. But before any of that good stuff can happen, you will have to engage in a flurry of introspection. You’ve got to clarify and deepen your relationship with yourself.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education,” said writer Mark Twain. That’s excellent advice for you to apply and explore in the coming weeks. Much of the time, the knowledge you have accumulated and the skills you have developed are supreme assets. But for the immediate future, they could obstruct you from learning the lessons you need most. For instance, they might trick you into thinking you are smarter than you really are. Or they could cause you to miss simple and seemingly obvious truths that your sophisticated perspective is too proud to notice. Be a humble student, my dear.
