Clayton Dial, 23, pulled a gun and demanded cash at a Japanese restaurant in Champaign, Ill., only to have chef Tetsuji Miwa thwart the robbery. “I instantly grabbed my sushi knife, walked up to him, wrapped my arm around his shoulder and asked him what he wanted,” Miwa said. “He saw the blade, got scared and started running.” Miwa and two co-workers wrestled him to the ground, and assistant manager Joe Pendzialek said he grabbed a stool “and cracked him over the head with it,” before calling police. DRUGS?

NO, SERIOUSLY, I HAVE DRUGS.

Why They Call It Dope John Balmer, 50, was arrested at a Kmart store in Hudson, Fla., while wearing a T-shirt that read, “Who needs drugs?” Below that, it said, “No, seriously, I have drugs.” When a sheriff’s deputy entered the store, Balmer tried to hand a “bag of green leafy substance” to the person behind him, officers reported, but the person wouldn’t take the bag, which deputies retrieved and said contained marijuana and methamphetamine. (Tampa Bay Times)

Smart Phones, Dumb People Hong Kong authorities caught a man trying to smuggle 94 iPhones, worth more than $48,000 on the black market, into mainland China by strapping the devices to his body. The man’s luggage contained no contraband, but customs officials noticed him walking with a “stiff posture.” When he set off a metal detector, they searched him and found the phones taped to his chest, abdomen, thighs, calves and groin. (International Business Times)

Rescue Follies John Arwood, 31, and Amber Campbell, 25, told police who found them in a closet at Florida’s Daytona State College that they had spent two days locked in the closet before calling 911 to be rescued. Officers tracked the phone’s location and simply opened the door, which they said had been unlocked the entire time. (Orlando Sentinel)

Pledge Drive After Bill Kelly earned $600,955 as executive director of public broadcasting station WVIA-TV in Scranton, Pa., he proposed a new position: raising money for the station’s new endowment fund. The board of directors agreed and notified its 15,000 station members, anticipating they would welcome the station’s continuing its ties with Kelly, an employee of 40 years. Instead, 6,300 members dropped out. About 2,300 of them specifically cited excessive executive compensation as the reason. The organization’s 22 board members cut ties with Kelly by donating $291,878 of their own money to buy out his contract. (Scranton’s The Times-Tribune)

SANITY FAIR

My father, who drank his coffee black, used to bristle when his cup wasn’t filled to the top. “You know how you could sell TAKE more coffee?” he used to ask. “Fill the cup.” He was never the most popular guy in the diner.

QUICK

TIPPING POINT

T

he begging jars are everywhere. You can’t order a cup of coffee, an ice cream cone or a sandwich without seeing a tip jar, usually colorfully decorated, adorned with clever phrases all designed to cajole me to part with some change. “Alms for the pour,” seen at Freedom of Espresso in Armory Square, is my most recent favorite. My problem is, I can’t part with change. I have a mild, undiagnosed and untreated form of OCD that makes it impossible for me to spend coins. Unlike most people waiting in line who gladly fish through their pockets to find the coins to round up their purchase so they can get only bills back, I quietly rejoice when I purchase something for, say, $2.09. I go home and place that 91 cents, plus whatever other coins have accumulated in my pocket during the day, in a jar on my dresser. So if I’m going to leave a tip for a barista, it’s got to be a dollar bill. As crazy as it sounds, I’d rather leave a dollar than a quarter. But that’s a glitch in my own brain circuitry, not really the core of what bugs me about this ubiquitous and accepted form of institutionalized panhandling. What discomforts me is the begging. People working for a living shouldn’t have to be prostrating themselves before strangers in order to make ends meet. Would it not be more dignified, and more honest, if we just paid a fair price for the coffee

(it’s already more than two bucks) and let the coffee shop owner pay the person behind the counter a fair wage? Not all that long ago, the line was pretty clear. If you’re sitting down, at a restaurant table or on a bar stool, you’re expected to leave a tip. If you’re standing up at a counter, you’re not. Now at the risk of offending every barista and sandwich artist I’ve ever met, there is a huge difference between standing behind a counter and running around a dining room waiting on tables. Taking and remembering food and drink orders for a table full of hungry diners working their way from drinks through appetizers through dinner and dessert is a far cry, mentally and physically, from pouring a cup of coffee or scooping an ice cream cone. The law reflects this state of affairs by means of a two-tiered minimum wage. The federal government establishes a paltry minimum wage of $2.13 per hour for workers who receive $30 or more per month in tips. No one can live on $2.13 an hour: That’s more

than $5 less than the minimum wage for everyone else, which is still mired at $7.25. So we all understand that we have to tip waiters and waitresses. But the tip jar sitting in front of workers making the regular minimum, that’s a different story. In New York state, waiters and waitresses earning tips have to be paid at least $5 per hour, compared to the state minimum for non-tipped workers, which is $8.75. That will change at the end of this year, when the tipped minimum goes up to $7.50, and the rest of the minimum-wage labor force gets only a quarter raise to $9. Los Angeles is among cities that plan to adopt a $15 minimum within five years, tips or no tips. Labor activists are pushing for that same number in New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo made headlines in May when he asked his newly created wage board to consider a special higher minimum for fast-food workers, without giving a specific number. Cuomo, striking a rare populist note, argued that it was time for the government to stop subsidizing the hamburger industry. One thing’s for sure: You never see that tip jar out at McDonald’s. SNT

HARPER LEE: TOMECOMING QUEEN

After 55 years author Harper Lee returns to the nation’s bookshelves with the publishing of a second novel. Go Set a Watchman, set for release Tuesday, July 14, is a novel Lee wrote prior to the literary work that made her a household name: the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1960 classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Watchman, set 20 years after the conclusion of Mockingbird, revolves around an adult Scout returning to Maycomb, Ala., in the 1950s to visit her father, lawyer Atticus Finch. Several characters from Mockingbird make appearances in Watchman. Lee, now 89, wrote the original manuscript in the mid-1950s but was persuaded by her then-publisher to tell the story from Scout’s younger perspective. According to a press release from HarperCollins Publishers, which holds the rights to the novel, “The original manuscript was considered to have been lost until fall 2014, when Tonja Carter (Lee’s lawyer) discovered it in a secure location where it had been affixed to an original typescript of To Kill a Mockingbird.” There is much excitement in literary circles about the upcoming release, although the timing is controversial. Lee’s advanced age and the recent death of her older sister, who acted as her lawyer and protector, has made some question whether she wanted the novel published. “I started reading online articles about how maybe Harper Lee never wanted to publish this book, that her late sister had fiercely guarded access to Miss Lee, and that her new lawyer or manager might have coerced her into agreeing to publish it,” said Wendy Scalfaro, library media specialist at G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton. “I’m still looking forward to reading it. I just hope she wasn’t taken advantage of.” The situation was likened to the death of author J.D. Salinger, who penned The Catcher in the Rye, regarding whether his other works should be published. As was also the case with Franz Kafka, who told his friend and literary executor to burn all his writings following his death; those wishes were ignored, with many of his works published posthumously.

8

Mary Badham and Gregory Peck in the 1962 movie version of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Karl Wasmuth, librarian at the Hazard Branch of the Onondaga County Public Library, said he was shocked by the news of Lee’s upcoming novel. “It had been so long, and with the reports of her health, it would be sort of like hearing Jimmy Carter was going to run for president again.” Hazard Branch, 1620 W. Genesee St., will have two copies of Watchman available on Wednesday, July 15, while the Northern Onondaga Public Library at North Syracuse, at 100 Trolley Barn Lane, will have 10, the most copies in the system. Nevertheless, there will be a wait to get your hands on the book. As of last week there were 150 holds on the novel throughout the entire Onondaga County Public Library system, which consists of 31 libraries. There are an additional 60 holds on large-print and audiobook versions, according to Bill Hastings, assistant director of the Northern Onondaga Public Library.

Meanwhile, local bookstores, both independent and chain outlets, have been salivating for months regarding the Watchman release. The 288-page hardcover has a retail price of $27.99. “The entire bookselling industry was just so ecstatic with the prospect that we’ll have another Harper Lee book to sell,” said Bill Reilly, co-owner of the River’s End bookstore. “It’s not just a book, it’s a publishing event.” The Oswego store, at the intersection of Bridge and West First streets, has been handing out buttons to remind patrons of the release and has had pre-orders available. “It’s not quite the strength of the Harry Potter pre-orders or even Jim Boeheim’s Bleeding Orange pre-orders, but it’s

07.08.15 - 07.14.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

very strong,” noted Reilly, who will also have copies of To Kill a Mockingbird and T-shirts available. Both Barnes & Noble locations, at 3454 Erie Blvd. E. in DeWitt and 3956 Route 31, Clay, will hold Mockingbird read-athons from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 13. The classic will be read aloud by volunteers who can sign up for half-hour shifts, according to Nick Bennett, community business development manager at the DeWitt location. “We’re expecting it to be a lot of fun,” said Bennett. “For some people it’s tough. It’s public speaking, or public reading in this case.” Both Barnes & Noble stores will open Tuesday at 7 a.m. for early birds to pick up a copy. Watchman buyers will also receive free tall coffees from 7 to 10 a.m., and the first 20 customers to buy the book will receive a free To Kill a Mockingbird reusable tote. “We don’t know if it will be a lot like the normal release day or a Harry Potter release day or somewhere in between,” said Bennett. The two locations have also partnered with CNY Reads One Book, with a portion of Watchman and Mockingbird book sales donated to the cause, which will focus on next year’s salute to To Kill a Mockingbird. Customers should mention that they support CNY Reads One Book at the cash register and the donation will be made at no cost.

While time will tell if Go Set the Watchman will live up to its advance hype, as well as the acclaim of its predecessor, Hazard librarian Wasmuth remains optimistic. “I hope it’s a wonderful book,” Wasmuth said, “that it’s just what she wanted and thought it was time to let it out.” SNT

Stage critic James MacKillop profiles the Covey Theatre Company, which mounts the hippie musical Hair this weekend

TO THE PEOPLE

T

wenty-three Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) Awards in five years. Sold-out houses at community theater’s priciest venue, the BeVard Studio of the Mulroy Civic Center. Turn-away crowds not only for hot musicals like Rent or Avenue Q but also for subtle, cerebral original dramas like Playing God and The Romanovs. The Covey Theatre Company has been a shooting star, but one with a short arc. Everything will come to end in the next few months with three productions. The original drama Lincoln’s Blood will be presented at the New York Fringe Festival on Aug. 14 to 18. A revival of Lizzie Borden Took an Axe takes place in October at the Barnes-Hiscock Mansion (formerly the Corinthian Club) on 930 James St. And an all-star staging of the ultimate 1960s musical Hair at the BeVard will run two weekends, Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, and July 17 and 18. Covey is comprised of an unlikely but harmonious trio of 30-something Garrett Heater and Michael Penny along with Susan Blumer, a svelte and stylish grandmother. Heater is the most public face of the company, giving the curtain speeches, directing and writing shows, and occasionally appearing in them. But Heater is quick to say how dependent he is on his co-equals. The somewhat cryptic name of Covey reduces his profile and allows the company identity to be shared by Penny and Blumer. The secret behind the name is that it comes from the Covey Run Winery in Washington state, whose riches the triumvirate was imbibing when the venture was launched. Penny, a Heater pal who grew into a life partner, is listed as producing director. Often that means he is the company money man. High production standards signal that no Covey show ever looks done on the cheap, and yet the program contains no list for the names of prominent donors and carries few ads. Corporate

sponsors are not thanked at the curtain. Fundraisers are uncommon, last year’s revival of Jimmie Wachter’s astounding Colour Me Barbra being an exception. An even better testimony to Penny’s management is that Covey has twice entered the New York Fringe Festival, usually a prestige-winning loss leader. But the three partners came back home in the black. Blumer, often Susie rather than Susan, was previously associated with the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild, where a 20-ish Heater served part of his apprenticeship. Programs often cite Blumer for stage properties, which means she is also a producer. If some character in a Covey play is supposed to be reading Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, you can be sure that a copy with its title visible will be displayed on a coffee table. Blumer takes on multiple tasks that run into one another: stage manager, box office and also house manager, ensuring audience comforts. She co-wrote the holiday show All I Want for Christmas is . . . (December 2013). At its inception five years ago, Covey looked like a second edition of John Nara’s Simply New Theater for its judicious use of the BeVard space and a tradition of quality recognized at SALT Awards time. Heater, who recalls being blown away by Nara’s direction of Kiss of the Spider Woman (April 2007), made several impressive acting appearances in Simply New shows, notably Katurian in The Pillow Man (March 2009). It was under Simply New’s aegis that Heater asserted his distinctive directorial voice in town. He had been directing in Baldwinsville as early as a memorable Pal Joey in 2004, but a production of The Importance of Being Earnest (August 2008) at Jazz Central, with Bill Molesky as a baritone Lady Bracknell, asserted a presence in town. Heater played Algernon and coached British accents, while Blumer was Miss Prism. There had been plenty of drag Bracknells before, usually making the old girl just plain silly, a la Charley’s Aunt. What Heater and Molesky did was without precedent: a dour, menacing Lady. Heater, who also made the costumes himself, dressed her all in sepulchral black. What Molesky did was to create hilarity out of Lady Bracknell’s profound, saturnine disappointment with the absurdity in the world. It was a bold, entirely unprecedented departure from tradition. The result has been one of the best-remembered, most often-cited community theater productions of the last 10 years. Molesky, a polymath of theatrical lore and a demanding aesthete, made a natural ally with Heater and the burgeoning Covey Theatre. Although he worked with many companies in a breath-stopping variety of roles, Molesky never founded his own company — but if he had, it would have looked a lot like Covey. Molesky shared an interest in French playwright Yasmina Reza, whose God of Carnage he wanted Covey to produce in 2011 before the rights were available. Covey mounted the show last April. Heater and Penny still regularly drive to Florida to visit with Molesky.

Whatever the benign influences of Nara and Molesky, Heater and Covey both appear to be self-invented. Growing up in Baldwinsville, he was not taken on a pilgrimage to Broadway or Stratford, Ontario. Yet on his own Heater composed at age 10 an adaptation of Gone With the Wind, casting himself as Ashley. A VHS tape of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods left him thunderstruck, Still, he did not appear on stage until he joined the chorus of Bye Bye Birdie for producer Holly Wilson’s now-defunct Theatre ’90 in the late 1990s. As a Syracuse University undergraduate he majored in music rather than drama, traveling to Italy for immersion in opera and, later getting an advanced degree in music. Music is Heater’s ticket to a rewarding day job in the Oswego public schools, and also marks yet another distinction from Nara’s Simply New. Not only have some of Covey’s biggest hits been musicals, but Heater himself revealed sonorous chops in occasional singing roles, such as Princeton in Avenue Q (July 2012) opposite Sara Weiler‘s Kate Monster. Covey’s farewell to the BeVard Studio is a revival of Hair, Galt MacDermot’s musical romp through the Age of Aquarius. It marks the first time Hair has been mounted on a Central New York stage in a generation. Leading local players have been vying for roles. Covey’s debut in November 2010, with the premiere of the original drama Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, caught many people by surprise. Since 1990 there have been about 25 locally written stage plays, but the few box-office successes were either musicals such as Pat Lotito’s long-running Dickens of a Christmas or comedies like Jeff Kramer’s box-office hit Lowdown Lies (June 2007), developed in workshop with Armory Square Players. Lizzie, in contrast, seemed to come out of nowhere, a weighty, “well-made” drama that might have appeared in the generation of Lillian Hellman or Maxwell Anderson. While never pedantic, the dialogue gives evidence of the playwright’s diligent study of the 1892 Fall River murder. And as often as the story had been dramatized, Heater had a startling new and plausible theory of the murder and acquittal, never revealed in the press. More importantly, he created juicy roles with dialogue that told only part of the story and a performer’s craft fleshed out the subtext. An auteur of the stage, he stitched all the costumes and selected the performers to fill them: a smoldering Jodi Bova as Lizzie, Kate Huddleston

cast against type as the bitchy mother, and Carmen Viviano-Crafts as the cool, enigmatic sister. Its restaging at the Barnes-Hiscock Mansion in October will be Covey’s last act. It’s not simply that Lizzie was a success. It was later performed at the New York Fringe Festival and in the Borden hometown of Fall River, Mass. More remarkably, it created an audience for new works. Heater’s subsequent plays were very different but all drew strong crowds. The Romanovs (November 2011), another costume drama, gives a sympathetic portrayal of Nicholas (David Witanowski), the last czar. Playing God (November 2012), the only comedy, depicts three disparate writers (Karis Wiggins, Darian Sundberg and Louis Balestra) cajoled into cooperating on the same book. And Lincoln’s Blood (November 2014), the most ambitious of the four, interweaves stories of the effect of the president’s assassination on three people: Lincoln’s widow (Kate Huddleston), the landlady of the conspirators (Karis Wiggins) and the guilt-ridden guest (Darian Sundberg) at Ford’s Theater. Covey appears to have been free of the sturm und drang endemic to other companies. Veteran player Michael O’Neill recalls with pleasure appearing in Yasmina Reza’s Art in summer 2011. The other two actors were Bill Molesky and Josh Mele, all older and more experienced than Heater and, in O‘Neill’s words, “healthy egos.” “He was thoughtful and organized about blocking, and had pages of little blocking charts to get us off to a flying start,” O’Neill recalled. Heater was always pleasant in listening to an actor’s understanding of the issue. On areas of difference, he would deliver a note in private, as opposed to calling out a performer in front of the cast. “In short, he’s a gentleman,” O‘Neill concluded, “an actor’s director.” The three partners were agreed on a “five years and out” policy from the outset. When pressed, spokesman Heater is shrug-shouldered and philosophical. “I always wanted the Covey brand to be synonymous with quality, like an excellent bottle of wine. That goes hand in hand with how Covey got its name.” And some wines are only served in their time. SNT Covey Theatre Company will present 8 p.m. performances of Hair on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, and July 17 and 18, at the Mulroy Civic Center‘s BeVard Studio, 411 Montgomery St. Tickets are $31. Call 420-3729 for details.

SYRACUSE GRUE TIMES

With the advertising tag line proclaiming “The Insanity is Back,” Slaughter in Syracuse returns this year to share the most terrifying, bloody horror films created by underground filmmakers. The main event runs from noon until midnight on Saturday, July 11, at Eastwood’s Palace Theater, 2384 James St. Several films in the lineup will have their world premieres. Slaughter in Syracuse actually begins on Friday, July 10, with a meet and greet with the filmmakers during a buffet at Liverpool’s Maplewood Inn, but that feast has been sold out. Aside from Saturday’s main event at the Palace, Sunday will feature a Collector Con at the Maplewood, 400 Seventh North St., where vendors and fans can buy, sell, and trade horror and sci-fi related collectibles and memorabilia. This is the second year of the event, but it’s already grown considerably. “Last year was a very small crowd of only about 60 people, but this year we’ve already tripled that,“ said event organizer Jason West. “We have people from Florida, driving down from Canada, and even flying in from the United Kingdom.” Only one film premiered at last year’s inaugural show, compared to this year’s four premieres. The schedule features films from major underground directors that have intense cult followings.

American Guinea Pig: Bloodshock is the second of four planned annual entries in the series, inspired by the original Japanese “Guinea Pig” films, which were famous for their realistic-yet-brutal gore effects. Alas, a full version will not be screened due to filmmaker Marcus Koch’s recent illness; a 40-minute partial cut of the film will be screened, however, accompanied by a trailer. There is also much anticipation for the screening of Eric Stanze’s Scrapbook, which will premiere its 15th anniversary edition at the event. Also on hand to present their premieres will be director Ryan Logsdon’s Agoni, director Lucifer Valentine’s Vomit Gore 4 and director James Bell and actress Mae Bell presenting Tantrum. Also on the program will be director Michael magGot’s double feature of His Devil’s Night and Manna, auteur Lucifer Valentine returns with A Perfect Child of Satan, and director Arthur Cullipher and actor Shane Beasley presenting Headless. The fright flick I Am Monster will also be screened, albeit sans co-directors Lori Bowen and Shannon Lark. West was keen to point out the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of the weekend. “People go to events like this and wait in line, then play $40 or $50 for an autograph,” noted West. “Our event is going to be more personal, with the guests talking and signing for free at the buffet. It’s going to be like a big family atmosphere.” SNT

Aside from hot blues, Devon Allman also has his name adorning bottles of hot sauce. “Even though my family is known for music TAKE and I travel the world performing, my other passion is cooking,” Allman notes on his website. “Sauces have always been a favorite. I’m very pleased to put the Allman name on such a quality all-natural product.”

BRING ON THE BLUES

T

he annual New York State Blues Festival returns to downtown Syracuse’s Clinton Square on Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12, with a schedule of local rockers and premier national talent. Spanning Los Blancos to Robert Randolph, this celebration of the blues brings all flavors to the stage. The event is free and open to the public. Music starts at 4 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday‘s festivities begin at noon with a homemade instrument workshop with the Swamp Drivers and a 1 p.m. performance from the Signature Student Band. For more information, visit nysbluesfest.com.

Friday, July 10

Castle Creek (4 p.m.) The Syracuse tandem of Kim Monroe and Chris Eves has blended Berkleetrained licks with award-winning vocals on stages throughout the world. The duo recently recorded at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios in England. Their first full-length release is 2014’s The Only Life. For details, visit castlecreekband.com. Judge Gazza (4:40 and 5:55 p.m.) This Salt City musician plays homemade cigar box guitars from parts he’s collected around Syracuse. Citing Mississippi Fred McDowell, Bukka White, Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside as crucial influences, Gazza’s got growling vocals, a Peavey-powered slide guitar and pounding Chuck Taylors that stomp 07.08.15 - 07.14.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

his rhythmic beats throughout New York. Check out Facebook.com/JudgeGazza. Phil Petroff and the Natural Fact (5 p.m.) With his electrifying guitar style, Petroff’s prowess is flashy, charismatic and led by his righteous tone. He was named 1997 “Best Blues Instrumentalist” at the Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys) and was inducted into the New York State Blues Hall of Fame. Petroff has played with the Lake Effect Blues Band, the Lone Sharks, Roosevelt Dean, The Nighthawks, Albert Collins and Debbie Davies. The High Jivers (6:15 p.m.) Before relocating from Syracuse to Nashville in September 2014, guitarist Austin John proved his talent to local musicians such as Colin Aberdeen, who became a friend and mentor. The group then formed last February over a few beers in Nashville. The High Jivers, which also features Dawna Zahn, Aaron Mlasko and Hank Miles, merge old-soul class and taste, youthful energy and interpretation, for an engaging combination. Aside from his own Austin John Band, a local trio

with Booth Johnson and Mark Tiffault, John also played with the Silver Queen Casket Company. Visit Facebook.com/ TheHighJivers. Miss E (7:10 and 8:40 p.m.) Supplying powerful vocals and ripping guitar licks, Syracuse’s Miss E brings jazz, Latin, rhythm’n’blues, funk and folk all into the fold. With substantial opener credits on her resume (including Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tommy Castro and CoCo Montoya), Miss E boasts elements of Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Etheridge. Visit Facebook.com/MissEMusic. Danielle Nicole Band (7:30 p.m.) Born in Kansas City, Mo., the charismatic Danielle Nicole rocks her bass, with powerful vocals and lyrics to match. Nicole’s previous band was Trampled Under Foot. She started her own outfit in 2014, enlisting Mike “Shinetop” Sedovic (keyboards), Jan Faircloth (drums) and Brandon Miller (guitar) to her new project. Nicole has been compared to seminal talents such as Susan Tedeschi and Etta James. Visit daniellenicolekc. com. The Kingsnakes (9 p.m.) The Syracuse-bred blues rockers, formed in 1983, have played alongside the best in the business, and even spent four years backing legendary bluesman John Lee Hooker on a national tour. Members over

the decades have included Pete McMahon, Terry Mulhauser, Paul LaRonde, Lou Micelli, Mark Tiffault, T.A. James, Garnet Grimm, Gary Lavancher, Jerry Neely and the late K.J. James, a.k.a. Dr. Blue. Best known for 1985 LP Take a Chance, the band was inducted into the Sammy Hall of Fame in 2006.

Saturday, July 11

Chris Merkley (1:40 and 2:55 p.m.) The blues rocker has toured across Europe, including Paris, and released nine albums with a variety of groups. Merkley has also composed original music for television, with several songs featured in the HBO miniseries Generation Kill. He currently performs solo and with acts such as The Crooners and Digger Jones. Visit ChrisMerkley.com. The Swamp Drivers (2 p.m.) Utica’s wild, high-energy band plays everything from a one-string garden hoe to a fourstring boat oar. Musicians Terry (MoJo) Johnson, Ted (Smokin’ T) Toscano, Phil (Wild Thang) Diehl and Tom (Bad-Ass) Guidera preside over a repertoire of rock originals and covers spanning ZZ Top to B.B. King, all played on homemade instruments. The eclectic band was inducted into the New York State Blues Hall of Fame in 2014. Check out theswamp drivers.com. Los Blancos (3:15 p.m.) For 20 years, Syracuse’s Los Blancos have been filling the holes in souls across the country. Blending blues, soul, Zydeco, funk and folk, this beyond-tight band can make bodies move in any size venue. The group, which includes Colin Aberdeen, Steve Winston, Mark Nanni and Mark Tiffault, backed two-time Grammy-winner (and former Blanco) Jose Alvarez on his solo album, Diggin’ In. For details, visit casablancos.com. Tim Herron (4:10 and 5:40 p.m.) The Syracuse musician ably blends folk, jazz, rock and blues, with two solo albums to his credit and six more as leader of the Tim Herron Corporation. “Luckily, I love what I do,” Herron says. “Even if it’s not a great crowd, I enjoy what I’m doing. I can find something good to take out of it. I still look forward to playing. I don’t look at it like work like some guys do.” Visit TimHerronCorporation.com. John Primer (4:30 p.m.) The Camden, Miss.-born musicmaker worked with the innovators of the Chicago blues sound in the 1960s. Primer was recruited by Muddy Waters as a guitarist, opening act

and bandleader, then went on to play with Sammy Lawhorn, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks and Willie Dixon. The Grammy-nominated blues artist also toured with Magic Slim and the Teardrops for 14 years, bringing his tight guitar work around the planet. Visit john primerblues.com. Carolyn Kelly Blues Band and the Soul of Syracuse (6 p.m.) Carolyn Kelly — born in South Carolina, raised in Philadelphia and a Syracuse singer since 1968 — joins forces with Mark Hoffmann, Bernie Clarke and Todd Fitzsimmons for a suppertime sonic blast. With the palpable stage presence of Kelly and a blues-driven soul-group powerhouse featuring plenty of New York State Blues Festival royalty, anything is possible. DamDog (7:10 and 9 p.m.) Brothers Dave, Craig and Larry Kyle started making blues music in 1978, and their devotion to each other and their musical style stays true to their roots. Best known for their CD Old School, the trio has opened for the J. Geils Band, Max Creek and Jonathan Edwards. Visit syracuse bands.net/damdog. Devon Allman Band (7:30 p.m.) Yes, he’s the son of Gregg Allman from the Allman Brothers Band. And while the family name comes through in Allman’s soulful voice and dirty blond hair, he’s worked for years to establish a sound of his own. His guitar playing has been called melodic and expressive as he melds blues, rock and soul; check out his CD Ragged and Dirty for ample evidence. Also on his resume are previous stints with Honeytribe and Royal Southern Brotherhood. Visit devonallmanband. com. Robert Randolph and the Family Band (9:30 p.m.) The funk-soul outfit, led by Robert Randolph on pedal steel guitar, hits somewhere between Stevie Ray Vaughan and Earth, Wind and Fire in terms of legendary energy and excitement. Aside from Randolph, who was named on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list, the band also features Marcus Randolph, Lenesha Randolph, Danyel Morgan and Brett Haas. Their substantial festival appearances include Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and South by Southwest. For a preview of what to expect at Clinton Square, listen to the 2002 CD Live at the Wetlands. For information, visit robertrandolph.net. SNT

Jasmine is a solid 54 pounds of playfulness! This athletic American Bulldog/Boxer loves going on runs and playing with toys. In fact, she’s all play and no work! So while she does know how to sit on command, she would benefit from obedience training to work on her leash skills and other commands. After being picked up as a stray, Jasmine is ready to be treated like the princess she is and have all your attention to herself, so she is recommended for a home with no other pets or children. If you’re looking for a friendly, playful dog, stop by Wanderers’ Rest to fill out an adoption application and visit with Jasmine today!

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) How can you fulfill

your potential as an Aries? What strategies will help you become the best Aries you can possibly be? Now is an excellent time to meditate on these riddles. One of my Aries readers, Mickki Langston, has some stellar tips to inspire you: 1. One of your greatest assets is your relentless sense of purpose. Treasure it. Stay connected to it. Draw on it daily. 2. Love what you love with pure conviction, because there is no escaping it. 3. Other people may believe in you, but only sometimes. That’s why you should unfailingly believe in yourself. 4. It’s your duty and your destiny to continually learn more about how to be a leader. 5. Don’t be confused by other people’s confusion. 6. Your best friend is the Fool, who will guide you to laughter and humility when you need it most, which is pretty much all of the time.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) While making a

long trek through the desert on a camel, British author Somerset Maugham passed the time by reading Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time. After finishing each page, Maugham ripped it out and cast it away. The book weighed less and less as his journey progressed. I suggest that you consider a similar approach in the coming weeks, Taurus. As you weave your way toward your next destination, shed the accessories and attachments you don’t absolutely need. Keep lightening your load.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) “I have gathered

about me people who understand how to translate fear into possibility,” writes John Keene in his story “Acrobatique.” I’d love to see you do the same, Gemini. From an astrological perspective, now is a favorable time to put your worries and trepidations to work for you. You have an extraordinary capacity to use your doubt and dread to generate opportunities. Even if you go it alone, you can accomplish minor miracles, but why not dare to think even bigger? Team up with brave and resourceful allies who want to translate fear into possibility, too.

CANCER. (June 21-July 22) When novelist John Irving begins a new book, his first task is to write the last line of the last page. Then he writes the second-to-last line. He continues to work backward for a while until he has a clear understanding of the way his story will end. Right now, Cancerian, as you hatch your next big phase of development, I invite you to borrow Irving’s approach. Visualize in detail the blossoms that will eventually come from the seeds you’re planting. Create a vivid picture of the life you will be living when your plans have fully ripened. LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) You have cosmic permission to lose your train of thought, forget about what was so seriously important, and be weirdly amused by interesting nonsense. If stress-addicts nag you to be more responsible, tell them that your astrologer has authorized you to ignore the pressing issues and wander off in the direction of nowhere in particular. Does that sound like a good plan? It does to me. For now, it’s your sovereign right to be a wise and innocent explorer with nothing much to do but wonder and daydream and play around. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Even the most provocative meme cannot literally cause the Internet to collapse from overuse. It’s true that photos of Kim Kardashian’s oiled-up butt spawned a biblical flood of agitated responses on social media. So did the cover shot of Caitlyn Jenner in Vanity Fair and the Youtube video of a tiny hamster noshing tiny burritos and the season-five finale of the TV show Game of Thrones. But none of these starbursts unleashed so much traffic that the Web was in danger of crashing. It’s too vast and robust for that to ever happen. Or is it? I’m wondering if Virgos’ current propensities for high adventure and rollicking melodrama could generate phenomena that would actually, not just metaphorically, break the Internet.

22

by Rob Brezsny

To be safe, I suggest you enjoy yourself to the utmost, but not more than the utmost.

LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The coming weeks

will be a favorable time for you to acquire a new title. It’s quite possible that a person in authority will confer it upon you, and that it will signify a raise in status, an increase in responsibility, or an expansion of your clout. If for some reason this upgrade doesn’t occur naturally, take matters into your own hands. Tell people to refer to you as “Your Excellency” or “Your Majesty.” Wear a name tag that says “Deputy Director of Puzzle-Solving” or “Executive Vice President of Fanatical Balance and Insane Poise.” For once in your life, it’s OK to risk becoming a legend in your own mind. P.S.: It wouldn’t be a bad time to demand a promotion -- diplomatically, of course, in the Libran spirit.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Between now and

July 22, your password and mantra and battle cry is “serendipity.” To make sure you are clear about its meaning, meditate on these definitions: a knack for uncovering surprising benefits by accident; a talent for stumbling upon timely help or useful resources without searching for them. Got that? Now I’ll provide clues that should help you get the most out of your lucky breaks and blessed twists: 1. Be curious and receptive, not lackadaisical and entitled. 2. Expect the unexpected. Vow to thrive on surprises. 3. Your desires are more likely to come true if you are unattached to them coming true. But you should formulate those desires clearly and precisely.

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) On behalf of the Strange Angels in Charge of Uproarious Beauty and Tricky Truths, I am pleased to present you with the award for Most Catalytic Fun-Seeker and Intriguing Game-Changer of the Zodiac. What are your specific superpowers? You’re capable of transforming rot into splendor. You have a knack for discovering secrets that have been hidden. I also suspect that your presence can generate magic laughter and activate higher expectations and wake everyone up to the interesting truths they’ve been ignoring. CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) “Who is that

can tell me who I am?” asks King Lear in the Shakespeare play named after him. It’s a painful moment. The old boy is confused and alarmed when he speaks those words. But I’d like to borrow his question and transplant it into a very different context: your life right now. I think that you can engender inspirational results by making it an ongoing meditation. There are people in a good position to provide you with useful insights into who you are.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) What’s hard but

important for you to do? What are the challenging tasks you know you should undertake because they would improve your life? The coming days will be a favorable time to make headway on these labors. You will have more power than usual to move what has been nearly impossible to move. You may be surprised by your ability to change situations that have resisted and outfoxed you in the past. I’m not saying that any of this will be smooth and easy. But I bet you will be able to summon unprecedented amounts of willpower and perseverance.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Franz Kafka produced three novels, a play, four short fiction collections and many other stories. And yet some of his fellow writers thought he was uncomfortable in expressing himself. Bertolt Brecht said Kafka seemed perpetually afraid, as if he were being monitored by the cops for illicit thoughts. Milena Jesenská observed that Kafka often wrote like he was sitting naked in the midst of fully clothed people. Your assignment in the coming weeks is to shed such limitations and inhibitions from your own creative expression. What would you need to do to free your imagination? To get started, visualize five pleasurable scenarios in which you feel joyful, autonomous, generous and expansive.
