Art Zimmer has led an intriguing life for 77 years. A hard-working and entrepreneurial-minded farm boy from Randallsville, New York, he barely graduated from Hamilton High. Few people predicted that he would own 13 major businesses, including the Syracuse New Times. In his long career he encountered people from all over the world, such as His Royal Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait, boxing champ George Foreman, 1950s rock-n-roll star Jerry Lee Lewis, Grammy-winning singer Lou Rawls, Saddam Hussein’s son Uday Hussein, and Maria Von Trapp, whose life was immortalized in “The Sound of Music.” Along the way, he formed strong opinions about government and politicians in Syracuse and New York State. It is all, and much more, in the book.

Toronto scheduled an accessible orgy for disabled people, with space for 20 wheelchairs, an interpreter for the deaf and free admission for caretakers. The Aug. 14 event was the brainchild of Stella Palikarova, 35, who is in a wheelchair because of spinal muscular atrophy but declared nothing is wrong with her libido and is tired of people assuming there must be. “The naysayers are just subconsciously hating the fact that people in wheelchairs are having great sex, better sex than a lot of people are having,” she explained. Fellow organizer Andrew Morrison-Gurza, 31, agreed, declaring, “A wheelchair can become just a big sex toy.” Palikarova noted the “Deliciously Disabled” sex night coincided with the Parapan Am Games and hoped some of the competitors would attend her event to unwind. The event was sold out. (Toronto Sun)

The common counselors suing Mayor Minor are paying their lawyer $200 per hour. The mayor’s outside counsel bills the city at $180.

QUICK TAKE

By Ed Griffin-Nolan Former Syracuse New Times cartoonist Joe Glisson. Michael Davis photo

LOCAL FUNNIES NEEDED TO NEEDLE LOCAL POLS

D

on’t you miss political cartoons? Ever since Joe Glisson hung up his pen here at the Syracuse New Times in December 2012 and Frank Cammuso departed The Post-Standard the following month, we’ve had no local cartoonists. It’s been nothing but words and photographs. Facebook memes and Jon Stewart’s split-screen images are nice, but they are no substitute for the one-two punch that, for so long, cartoons skewering our political elites used to serve up. Instead we’re forced to lay down the proverbial thousand words, and at the moment, a cartoon would serve us so much better. Picture the minivan filled with squabbling common councilors, driven by a grim-faced Mayor Stephanie Miner, shaking her head, eyes raised as she shouts at the rearview mirror. The caption might even say “Out for a Joy Ride” while the mayor’s stern words “Don’t make me stop this car!” float in the cartoonist’s bubble. “Mom” Miner, in this case, is hollering at her little darlings in the back of the van, because the children keep whining that they want to play Game of Thrones on the van’s Xbox. She has cleverly set the parental controls to block some of the games. “Nope,” she

insists, “you can’t play that one. I make the rules.” The kids keep on hollering, “It’s not fair!” The mayor’s look says it all. “Wait ’til your father gets home . . . Don’t make me come back there.” You get the idea. It would be funny if I could draw you a caricature, but a good cartoonist goes beyond caricature. A Cammuso or a Glisson would sketch in the details of the street, and as your eye circles the image you might notice that the manhole covers are missing. The street is filling with water from a broken water main. The gas tank is on empty, the van is way past due for inspection, and the meter keeps running. (The current dispute between the legislative and executive branches of city government over computer access is costing us about $380 per billable hour in legal fees.) A sign at the intersection says I-81, and it’s pointing in four directions. I’m not sure if our intrepid cartoonist would risk a final image, but an honest portrait of our city this summer would also include

a dead body or two, in reference to the spate of shootings that have occurred this summer. In this summer when our streets run red with the blood of young men, most of them the “Black Lives” that the politicians say should matter, and the water that we can’t seem to keep in the mains, our local elected officials have found the time, and the money (our money) to argue about internal computer use policy. Miner says the Common Council won’t sign a standard computer use form, the same kind of form most of us sign the first day on the job. The councilors say they won’t honor a document that refers to them as employees of the city. They say they are elected officials. How hard is it to figure this out? Aren’t they elected officials, employed by the city? The Joy Brigade (the councilors are led in this crusade by Kathleen Joy) replies indignantly that the mayor might read their private emails. They don’t want to give her that power. Are they kidding? Have the councilors never heard of Gmail? If there are things of a personal or political nature, use another email account. The official city computers should only be used for official city business anyway. Is there anything that City Hall can agree on without it becoming a tug of war between the mayor and the Common Council? (Mind you, all of them are members of her own party). This would be a month’s worth of cartoons. This whole thing should just be sent to a qualified arbitrator. So that the Common Council can move on to more important matters, such as the vital question of whether the toilet paper rolls at City Hall should roll under or over. OK, next cartoon. Councilor Kathleen Joy and Mayor Miner step into a hearing room to meet their arbitrator. You guessed it: Hillary Clinton. Somewhere, Cammuso and Glisson must feel their ink pen fingers twitching. QUICK TAKE

By Bill DeLapp Jason Matthew Shipman, Birdie Newman Katz, Melissa Macleod Herion and Leah Gabriel in Cortland Repertory Theatre’s Miracle on South Division Street. Eric Behnke photo

KEEPING THE FAITH

S

andwiched into Cortland Repertory Theatre’s summer season of big-time musicals and spoofs is the regional premiere of the gentle slice-of-life comedy of Miracle on South Division Street, which concerns a long-ago divine sighting that has defined the lives of a devout Roman Catholic family.

REVIEW

Playwright Tom Dudzick riffs on a familiar Buffalo legend about a barber who claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary in his own shop during World War II. Dudzick’s protagonists are the Nowaks, who have maintained a religious shrine in honor of the occasion. Reminiscent of one of those bathtub Jesus lawn fixtures, the shrine has since become a tourist attraction for decades. The first act introduces the Nowak quartet, headed by mama Clara (Birdie Newman Katz), who starts berating her daughter Ruth (Melissa Macleod Herion) for skipping Mass. “Lying is a mortal sin,” Clara says when Ruth doesn’t own up to the crime. “It means eight extra weeks in hell--minimum.” Also in the Nowak kitchen is Clara’s visiting son Jimmy (Jason Matthew Shipman), a sanitation worker, and her second daughter Beverly (Leah Gabriel), a ketchup bottler. Dudzick’s play offers some swashes of local color regarding the Queen City backdrop, as he reduces Buffalo to a pair of familiar cultural touchstones: unemployment and bowling. The Nowaks’ ethnic

heritage is likewise boiled down to snippets of Polish references such as “dupa.” Clara is also a major fan of Elvis, which feels like a sly joke about being hopelessly devoted to another god. But once the characters are gathered in the family kitchen, the plot quickly kicks in. Ruth, a wanna-be actress and playwright, intends to mount a one-woman show about the shrine’s history, albeit with some hidden secrets that the rest of the family doesn’t yet know. Will Ruth’s revelations threaten to turn the Nowak household topsy-turvy? You betcha sweet dupa. Cortland Repertory’s production often seems like a throwback to the days of Norman Lear’s television reign, especially given Dudzick’s shrewd mix of social commentary, snappy dialogue and unexpected plot twists. Director Nathaniel Shaw maintains a sweet affection for his characters, however, keeping them real even as they are plunged into unreal (for them, at least) situations. The interplay between the siblings is fun to watch. Jason Matthew Shipman offers a rumpled appeal for

Jimmy, a roll-up-his-sleeves type with an initial secret that gets sidelined when even bigger tales are uncovered. Leah Gabriel’s Beverly, who enters the proceedings with a bowling-ball bag in her hand, shows the stress of a family member who can’t handle the truth. Melissa Macleod Herion handles the bulk of the play’s exposition when her Ruth character launches into the shrine’s facts, yet she also manages some sisterly sniping. “I was there for your saxophone solo,” Ruth tells Beverly, “and I had whooping cough!” The real Miracle worker is Birdie Newman Katz as mama Clara, who is so Catholic that she can’t even utter the title of a certain Eve Ensler play in mixed company. Katz gets the bulk of Dudzick’s nifty one-liners and gleefully runs with them, such as “It’s not supposed to make sense: It’s religion!” And one secret regarding a family member (which some theatergoers will figure out early on) isn’t really so jaw-dropping after all, as Clara declares, “I know the score. I got cable.” This breezy production is furthered enhanced by Nicholas Thornburg’s detailed scenic design. Everything about the Nowak household seems lived in, from the wall’s paintings of “The Last Supper” and Jesus Christ, to images of crosses and rosaries, and even a mousetrap near the refrigerator that’s ready to spring. Talk about kitchen-sink realism! Miracle on South Division Street continues with performances on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Thursday, Aug. 20, through Saturday, Aug. 22, 7:30 p.m., at Cortland Repertory Theatre, 6799 Little York Lake Road, off Route 281, Preble. Call (607) 756-2627 or (800) 4276160 for details. SNT

French KISSES

Arts writer Carl Mellor visits Utica’s MWP Institute for a dazzling show of French impressionists 08.19.15 - 08.25.19 | syracusenewtimes.com

M

onet to Matisse: The Age of French Impressionism, at Utica’s Munson-WilliamsProctor Arts Institute, serves a scrumptious four-course feast. The exhibit presents works by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and other figures associated with impressionism. It features artists whose paintings were a precursor for that movement. There’s space for artists who drew inspiration from the impressionists but eventually followed their own creative paths. And the show discusses impressionism’s considerable impact on modern art. The artworks come from the collection of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens of Memphis, Tenn. They are accompanied by a timeline, lengthy captions and other text explaining basic tenets of impressionism: quick, decisive brushwork; focusing on light at various times of the day; a shift toward painting on site instead of in a studio; and interpretations of everyday subjects. The subjects range from orchards to boats, from a scene on the River Seine to a woman playing a guitar. A show like Monet to Matisse promises dramatic explorations of color, and it delivers the artistic goods. In “Les Collettes,” Renoir uses several colors beautifully. Monet, in “Port of Dieppe, Evening,” captures twilight time with yellow, red and green colors lighting up the sky and reflecting on an icy harbor. He doesn’t fully detail the boats; they emerge as dim shapes. Theodore Earl Butler’s “Grainsacks, Giverny” depicts a field in late afternoon, a sun-drenched scene filled with gold and orange colors. An American who spent many decades in France and studied with Monet, Butler wasn’t a major figure in the movement. Elsewhere, Berthe Morisot’s “Peasant Girl Among Tulips” places its subject smack in the middle of radiant tulips. The colors of her dress play off tulip leaves, and her brown-stained hands reflect working in the fields. Other pieces make it clear that impressionism encompassed more than landscapes. They include Degas’ “Dancer Adjusting Her Shoe,” done with charcoal and pastel on paper, and Mary Cassett’s “The Visitor,” an elegant portrait of her sister. The exhibition explains that Monet, Renoir and the others didn’t operate in a vacuum. It displays works such as Eugene-Louis Boudin’s “Beach at Benerville.” He typically painted outdoors, preceding impressionists who worked in a similar manner. Likewise, the exhibit amply documents connections to the Barbizon School, a group of artists who gathered in Barbizon, a small village on the edge of a forest. They also painted outdoors. In another section, the show highlights artists regarded as post-impressionists. The pieces include Georges Seurat’s “The Picnic,” full of formalized images made up of tiny dots of paint; Paul Cezanne’s “Trees and Rocks, Near the Chateau Noir,” seen as a bridge to Cubism; and “Dancer Seated on a Pink Divan” by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Beyond that, the exhibit celebrates the considerable role played by the impressionists. When they staged their first show in 1874, the work was scorned as vulgar and irrelevant. Eventually, they became famous. At the same time, Monet to Matisse isn’t about force-feeding art history to those who visit the museum. A large show presenting more than 60 works has to have lots of visual appeal. In addition to the aforementioned artworks, the exhibit displays Matisse’s “The Place, Belle Ile,” Paul Gauguin’s oil “Bathing in Front of the Port of Pont-Aven,” and “Joyous Festival” by Gaston La Touche. All three are memorable pieces. It’s a well-organized exhibition affording viewers an opportunity to see works seldom available in this region, a successful collaboration between two arts organizations, and the first time that Munson-Williams-Proctor has hosted a show of this kind. The decision to move in that direction is a fortunate one. Monet to Matisse: The Age of French Impressionism runs through Nov. 29 at Utica’s Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, 310 Genesee St., Utica. The museum is open Tuesdays through Thursdays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. Admission to this exhibition is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for ages 12 and under. The 67th annual Emmys Awards broadcast will air Sunday, Sept. 20, 8 p.m., on Fox-TV.

TAKE

By Genelle Levy

VIEWERS STILL RELATE TO MODERN FAMILY

Fall is the most highly anticipated season for television series, and this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony holds the promise of living up to the anticipation. One nominated show stands out. As ABC’s highly successful sitcom Modern Family enters its seventh season on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 9 p.m., will it win the award for Outstanding Comedy Series a sixth time? Modern Family has been nominated for 73 Emmys and won 21, taking home the top comedy prize every season it has been on the air. In the last five years it has beat out acclaimed series such as 30 Rock, The Office, Glee and The Big Bang Theory. This year it is up against past contenders Parks and Recreation (NBC), Louie (FX), Silicon Valley (HBO) and Veep (HBO), as well as new streaming favorites Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix) and Transparent (Amazon). Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University, says that Modern Family fills a niche as one of the few situational family comedies on TV. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were far more of these shows on the air. “We don’t see families like this anymore on TV. When we do see families on TV, they’re dysfunctional,” Thompson said. “This family is unusually kind-hearted for what we’re used to seeing right now.” Unlike many of the other shows nominated this year, Modern Family doesn’t rely on satire or parodies of cultural references. It doesn’t rely on prototype characters either. Rather, it’s the construction and juxtaposition of the characters themselves that provides the comedy in any given situation. The humor of characters and relationships is also highlighted in other

The cast of Modern Family.

Emmy-nominated comedies. Transparent relies on the meat of characters and fleshing out the complexities of relationships. So does the dark humor of Louie. But the laughs on those shows are mainly garnered from satire and current cultural references. The effort involved in such witty narratives is definitely Emmy-worthy. It takes a lot of talent to keep spinning gold from fleeting popular cultural references or political scandals. Modern Family doesn’t use such active, constructed comedy. Instead, it finds its comedic fodder in the quirks and flaws of well-constructed characters and their interactions. It’s Phil’s goofy, wanna-be cool attitude contrasted with Claire’s Type A suburban mom. It’s Cam’s loving, flamboyant approach contrasted with Mitch’s detail-oriented perfection. It’s not just about the interactions that occur within the small nuclear families, but also about the interactions between extended family members: father and son-in-law, daughter and stepmother, cousin and cousin. In some sense, this presents less of a challenge for the Modern Family team. A more traditional approach like this one has to be done well to be funny; Modern Family requires meticulous

writing and good banter. But Modern Family’s writers probably aren’t forced to work as hard to create drama within the comedy, as accomplished by the writers of more in-depth, complex shows like Transparent. If dramatic effort counts in the race for Outstanding Comedy Series, maybe Modern Family won’t stand up to its competition this year. However, what we still like about Modern Family’s characters is that we see in them what we see in ourselves or in any family. The relatability factor still goes a long way in the success of situational comedies. Just take a look back at the huge TV audiences for shows like Friends, Seinfeld, The Cosby Show and The Golden Girls. People like shows that remind them of themselves. There’s a whole lot of funny involved in the contrasting personalities of normal couples, clumsy kids and suburban politics. Regardless of what happens this year, Thompson believes Modern Family deserves the accolades it has received so far. “This show is exquisitely written and acted,” he said. “What was the norm has now become avant-garde, and I think they’re being rewarded for their uniqueness.” SNT Genelle Levy is a graduate student in the Goldring Arts Journalism program at Syracuse University.

T

he music industry is catching up to current global marketing trends. Instead of releasing new albums on different days of the week in different countries, record labels will now collectively “drop” their products on “New Music Fridays.” The International Federation of Phonographic Industries (IFPI) represents a $15 billion industry. It has approximately 1,300 member labels in 61 countries. As of July 10, the majority of those countries have agreed to release music at 1 a.m. local time on Fridays. The change is intended to synchronize the release date with when consumers have leisure time and to crack down on piracy. In the United States, new music previously arrived in stores on Tuesdays to encourage consumers to shop on an otherwise stagnant retail day of the week. Releasing music on Fridays may rejuvenate physical sales, as people have more free time on the weekends and “are more likely to go out and buy a new album,” said Theo Cateforis, chairman of the Department of Music History and Culture at Syracuse University. He said that the local effect will be felt most strongly in physical record stores such as Armory Square’s Sound Garden, but that New Music Fridays likely won’t have the positive impact on sales that the IFPI is hoping for. Alayna Alderman, vice president and co-owner

08.19.15 - 08.25.19 | syracusenewtimes.com

of Record Archive in Rochester, said that the IFPI was making a lot more hype than necessary. “Our customers are already in tune with this change,” Alderman said. “It’s too soon to tell whether this will affect much other than when people come in to the store.” The IFPI has been working to curb physical and digital piracy for decades. Now that music becomes available at the same time in different parts of the world, the window for pirates to illegally duplicate and release music onto the black market has diminished, said David Rezak, director of the Bandier Program at Syracuse University. “In high-piracy grade nations, major labels often set a phantom release date and then dump the album early to get ahead of the pirates,” said Rezak. Some labels would make a big promotion for one day and then drop it four weeks early to get ahead of the black market. Thanks to New Music Fridays, this practice is no longer necessary. Theoretically. Opponents of the IFPI’s decision say that this shift benefits only major record labels like Sony or Warner

Music Group. Rezak agrees: “The majors aren’t involved much with niche artists, so this sidelines them.” Yet standardizing the drop date ensures that smaller labels and independent artists’ work also become available to the global market without delay. Rezak said that this is certainly advantageous for fringe artists. Ron Keck, principal owner of Armory Square’s SubCat Studios, said that he can’t imagine this will have much of an impact on recording artists because of the lag between recording an album and its release. Also, with the advent of the Internet, physical sales have dropped dramatically. “The music industry is upside down,” Keck said. “Computers and technology have made everything instantly available.” Keck said he doesn’t think that this will help much with the piracy issue, either. He said that equalizing the drop day won’t have much of an impact on a world that is used to downloading music for free, and that technology will keep ahead of the curve. “Money talks,” Keck said. “People will wait for free stuff.” People still buy physical records after live shows because there’s something “special” about being at a performance, Keck said. But there’s no way to tell yet whether the IFPI’s change will boost sales in stores, or if they’ll continue to “drop” in the digital age. John Cadley. The Hard Years (Caity Mae Records). Like so many great singer-songwriters, John Cadley is a storyteller at his core. Every track on The Hard Years takes the listener through an experience, lesson or event. Some songs reflect personal thoughts while in others Cadley seems able to communicate the experiences of those around him through his own words. “Nashville Queen” talks about a girl who got more than she bargained for after she earned “the big star on the door.” “If She Don’t Like Dogs” tackles the subject with humor: “She don’t have to like sports or huntin’ deer/ she don’t have to like fishin’ with a case of beer/ she don’t have to like spiders or snakes or frogs/ but don’t you ever trust a woman if she don’t like dogs.” The flawless instrumentation features Cadley on lead vocals; Clay Hess on rhythm and lead guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmony vocals; Nick Keen on mandolin; Tim Crouch on fiddle; Irl Hees on bass; and Cadley’s wife, Cathy, on harmony vocals. The players capture the laid-back feel of the songs in a way that doesn’t sacrifice emotion. The solos are fluid and highlighted by tasteful fretwork. Nothing is forced or clichéd, but rather comfortable and natural. Like an easy read, the album offers smooth listening but is never boring. Each tune brings a new flavor, complemented perfectly by the players and lyrics that can capture any ear with the stories they tell and the turns they take. The Hard Years is a record that music lovers of all kinds can appreciate: true to itself and well done from start to finish. For more information, visit cadleys.com. Favorite track: “The Way It’s Always Been”: “He said love is just another word/ for you belong to me/ and every time they say it/ you can hear them turn that key/ By the time you got it figured out/ exactly what they mean/ well, you’re locked up like a convict/ inside someone else’s dream.” Undergang. Fin (Conniving Scoundrels Music). Delivering dirty rock like only Undergang can, Fin captures the attitude and energy that drip from the group in live performance. Fronted by the legendary Al Smead and backed by Nathan Angell on guitars and vocals, Jim Drago on guitars, John Thomas on bass and vocals and Stefan Ilnitzki on drums, the band is fierce and more honed than ever on their latest work. Fin was engi-

neered, recorded, mixed and mastered at Moresound Studio with Jason Jacko Randall. The group walks a line somewhere between the Foo Fighters and the Eagles of Death Metal, taking pieces of each, but adding an intangible quality, perhaps wrapped up in Smead’s completely one-of-a-kind delivery. Poetic words seem to wander, but there’s always more to them than meets the ear, keeping listeners perpetually on their toes. Driving songs like “S.A.D.” push the album with ripping guitar on a racing pulse. “Breaks Begins” stands out as its words provoke: “There scents a nose keen/ amongst the senses crawl/ crouching stance on a target/ good humor, playful things/ hey, hey, hey, hey/ have a nice day/ the game is on.” With strength, energy and delivery that is completely their own, Undergang never fails to bring the raucous noise we all need sometimes. For details, visit Facebook.com/undergang13. Favorite track: “Breaks Begins”: “New day begins again/ dawn breaks into light blue/ deep breath on the front porch/ feel air exhilarate/ sit upon a throne of good hope/ drifting off into the state of things/ await — the game is on.” J.T. Hall Jazzz Consort. Rain After Midnight (independent). With a variety of styles explored, J.T. Hall and his crew dip into rumba strides and Latin-flavored rhythms featuring tunes that light up with Hall’s own flugelhorn, Tom Witkowski on keys

and highlighted most of all by John Magnante’s guitar. The disc admirably features original music, not standards. It’s remarkably clean, capturing the songs precisely, but perhaps sacrificing some of the natural ebb and flow. “Zanzibar” opens the disc with a smooth swing and Magnante’s expert delivery, channeling a tone reminiscent of the great Pat Metheny. Hall and Witkowski follow suit, providing tasteful takes on the theme. John Dancks on upright bass and Jason Jeffers on drums work to provide the backbone of the disc and do it right. Josh Dekaney and Ron Keck also provide additional Latin percussion, Tom Walker adds sax to “Carlo” and Cookie Coogan croons on three of the six tracks. Lyrics are not the highlight of the disc and for the most part, the instruments communicate the essence of the tune with no words necessary. However, “Carlo,” “Rain After Midnight” and “I Feel Like Feelin’ Blue” do tell stories through Coogan’s voice with some beautiful moments, especially on the disc’s closer, “I Feel Like Feelin’ Blue.” Hall has merged an outstanding band with commendable original material for this showcase, recorded in 2014 at SubCat Studios. For more information, email jthall44@hotmail.com. Favorite Track: “I Think of You.” SNT

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) You’d probably

prefer to stay in the romantic, carefree state of mind. But from what I can tell, you’re ripe for a new phase of your long-term cycle. Your freestyle rambles and jaunty adventures should now make way for careful introspection and thoughtful adjustments. Instead of restless star-gazing, I suggest patient earth-gazing. Despite how it may initially appear, it’s not a comedown. In fact, I see it as an unusual reward that will satisfy you in unexpected ways.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) In accordance with the current astrological omens, I recommend the following activities: Sing a love song at least once a day. Seek a message from an ancestor in a reverie or dream. Revisit your three favorite childhood memories. Give a gift or blessing to the wildest part of you. Swim naked in a river, stream or lake. Change something about your home to make it more sacred and mysterious. Obtain a symbolic object or work of art that stimulates your courage to be true to yourself. Find relaxation and renewal in the deep darkness. Ruminate in unbridled detail about how you will someday fulfill a daring fantasy.

GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) The ancient Greek epic poem The Iliad is one of the foundation works of Western literature. Written in the eighth century BCE, it tells the story of the 10-year-long Trojan War. The cause of the conflict was the kidnap of Helen of Troy, reputed to be the world’s most beautiful woman. And yet nowhere in The Iliad is there a description of Helen’s beauty. We hear no details about why she deserves to be at the center of the legendary saga. Don’t be like The Iliad in the coming weeks, Gemini. Know everything you can about the goal at the center of your life. Be very clear and specific and precise about what you’re fighting for and working toward. CANCER. (June 21-July 22) The comedian puppets known as the Muppets have made eight

movies. In The Great Muppet Caper, the muppets Kermit and Fozzie play brothers, even though one is a green frog and the other a brown bear. At one point in the story, we see a photo of their father, who has the coloring and eyes of Kermit, but a bear-like face. I bring up their unexpected relationship, Cancerian, because I suspect that a similar anomaly might be coming your way: a bond with a seemingly improbable ally. To prepare, stretch your ideas about what influences you might want to connect with.

LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) English author Barbara Cartland published her first novel at age 21. By the time she died 77 years later, she had written more than 700 other books. Some sources say she sold 750 million copies, while others put the estimate at 2 billion. In 1983 alone, she churned out 23 novels. I foresee a Barbara Cartland-type period for you in the coming months, Leo. Between now and your birthday in 2016, I expect you to be as fruitful in your own field as you have ever been. And here’s the weird thing: One of the secrets of your productivity will be an enhanced ability to chill out. “Relaxed intensity” will be your calming battle cry. VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) ‘’On or about December 1910, human character changed,’’ wrote English author Virginia Woolf in 1924. What prompted her to draw that conclusion? The rapidly increasing availability of electricity, cars and indoor plumbing? The rise of the women’s suffrage movement? Labor unrest and the death of the King? The growing prominence of experimental art by Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso? The answer might be all of the above, plus the beginning of a breakdown in the British class system. Inspired by the current astrological omens, I’ll borrow her brash spirit and make a new prediction: During the last 19 weeks of 2015, the destiny of the Virgo tribe will undergo a fundamental shift. Ten years from now, I bet

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) “Insanity

most important problems of life are all in a certain sense insoluble,” said psychologist Carl Jung. “They can never be solved, but only outgrown.” I subscribe to that model of dealing with dilemmas, and I hope you will consider it, too -- especially in light of the fact that from now until July 2016 you will have more power than ever before to outgrow two of your biggest problems. I don’t guarantee that you will transcend them completely, but I’m confident you can render them at least 60 percent less pressing, less imposing and less restricting. And 80 percent is quite possible.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Hundreds of years ago, Hawaiians celebrated an annual holiday called Makahiki. It began in early November and lasted four months. No one worked very much for the duration. There were nonstop feasts and games and religious ceremonies. Community-building was a featured theme, and one taboo was strictly enforced: no war or bloodshed. I encourage you Scorpios to enjoy a similar break from your daily fuss. Now is an especially propitious time to ban conflict, contempt, revenge and sabotage as you cultivate solidarity in the groups that are important for your future. You may not be able to make your own personal Makahiki last for four months, but could you at least manage three weeks? SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Located in

Ann Arbor, Mich., the Museum of Failed Products is a warehouse full of consumer goods that companies created but no one wanted to buy. It includes caffeinated beer, yogurt shampoo, fortune cookies for dogs, and breath mints that resemble vials of crack cocaine. The most frequent visitors to the museum are executives seeking to educate themselves about what errors to avoid in their own companies’ future product development. I encourage you to be inspired by

is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” Virtually all of us have been guilty of embodying that well-worn adage. And according to my analysis of the astrological omens, quite a few of you Capricorns are currently embroiled in this behavior pattern. But I am happy to report that the coming weeks will be a favorable time to quit your insanity cold turkey. In fact, the actions you take to escape this bad habit could empower you to be done with it forever. Are you ready to make a heroic effort? Here’s a good way to begin: Undo your perverse attraction to the stressful provocation that has such a seductive hold on your imagination.

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “Everything I’ve ever let go of has claw marks on it,” confessed the late, great author David Foster Wallace. Does that describe your experience, too? If so, events in the coming months will help you break the pattern. More than at any other time in the last 10 years, you will have the power to liberate yourself through surrender. You will understand how to release yourself from overwrought attachment through love and grace rather than through stress and force.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “Most people love in order to lose themselves,” wrote Hermann Hesse in his novel Demian. But there are a few, he implied, who actually find themselves through love. In the coming months, Pisces, you are more likely to be one of those rare ones. In fact, I don’t think it will even be possible for you to use love as a crutch. You won’t allow it to sap your power or make you forget who you are. That’s good news, right? Here’s the caveat: You must be ready and willing to discover much more about the true nature of your deepest desires -- some of which may be hidden from you right now.

HELP FOR HOMEOWERS IN FORECLOSURE New York State requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how

to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with our lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Banking Department at 1-877-Bank-NYS or visit the Department`s website at www.banking.state.ny.us FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully

describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Section 1303 NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving the copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you may lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF MORTGAGE COMPANY AND FILING AN ANSWER WITH THE COURT.
