“Oh, you’re naughty! (I’m a bit disappointed you didn’t go sniffing around Section 8 housing in Radisson. A deep, dark secret place, where it’s supposed to be like the wild, wild west, where chaos rules. There’s a story!) I trust that having satisfied your curiosity, this little escapade has indeed made you a humbler, better, more grateful husband; or at least a humbler, better, more grateful home owner.” — Sally Barry

TO Z The Life and Times of Art Zimmer An exciting new book commissioned by Shirley Sherburne Zimmer Edited by Lois Gridley Available from LOG CABIN BOOKS

www.logcabinbooks.com

Art Zimmer has led an intriguing life for 77 years. A hard-working and entrepreneurial-minded farm boy from Randallsville, New York, he barely graduated from Hamilton High. Few people predicted that he would own 13 major businesses, including the Syracuse New Times. In his long career he encountered people from all over the world, such as His Royal Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait, boxing champ George Foreman, 1950s rock-n-roll star Jerry Lee Lewis, Grammy-winning singer Lou Rawls, Saddam Hussein’s son Uday Hussein, and Maria Von Trapp, whose life was immortalized in “The Sound of Music.” Along the way, he formed strong opinions about government and politicians in Syracuse and New York State. It is all, and much more, in the book.

Otha Montgomery, 18, successfully eluded police chasing him for running a red light in Eastlake, Ohio, by pulling into a driveway and abandoning the car. Drone On

Four months after a U.S. intelligence employee landed a personal quadcopter drone on the roof of the White House, the Secret Service apprehended Ryan MacDonald, 39, for flying a drone across the street from the White House. MacDonald was asked to land the device, about the size of an iPad, and complied. The White House was locked down for more than an hour. (Associated Press)

A Seattle couple bought a Powerball ticket in February that lost. They left the ticket in their car until May, when they checked online and discovered it had won $1 million in a second-chance drawing. SANITY FAIR

By Ed Griffin-Nolan

When push comes to shove, football players know the difference between war and playing warrior. Of the nearly 1,700 players in TAKE the NFL, exactly one volunteered after Sept. 11: Pat Tillman of the Arizona Cardinals, who joined the Army Rangers and was killed by friendly fire in April 2004.

QUICK

PLAYING WITH FIRE

T

wo women have now done something only men have done before: They completed the training to be Army Rangers. Congratulations to Capt. Kristen Griest and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver for boldly going where no women have ever gone before, and breaking yet another glass ceiling.

You have to be impressed that anyone can complete such an arduous feat. Days without food or sleep, hauling heavy loads, and yet they keep moving, keep alert, keep ready to fight, pushing themselves beyond physical limits that most of us New York State Fairgoers could not imagine. This is no doubt a milestone for women to celebrate. But I can’t help but think: Couldn’t these powerful women, these strong women, go even further, and do something no man has ever been able to do before? Like figure out how to keep us out of senseless wars? We keep studying war and hoping for peace. We keep hearing politicians saying that war is a last resort when our budgets and our priorities say it is a first resort. Whether it’s Syria or the Mexican border, the default for national politicians is still shoot first and ask questions later. We wonder why we can’t control the violence in our own streets. We wonder how it is that a madman

with a gun and a smart phone can kill two innocents on live TV and, lSIS like, feel that he is finding immortality by uploading the evidence of his barbarity. At sporting events it has become routine to celebrate war and warriors. I admit that I still can get misty-eyed hearing “God Bless America” at the seventh-inning stretch of each game at Yankee Stadium. That custom, begun in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks 14 years ago, assures me that those who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001, including part of my own flesh and blood, will not be forgotten. But those tributes have morphed from commemoration to congratulation, from patriotism to propaganda. There is a huge difference between supporting those who rushed into the burning towers to supporting those who were sent to fight in Iraq. The Iraq war is nothing to celebrate. Whether you choose to blame Bush for the way he started it or Obama for the way he ended it, our unprovoked invasion of Iraq was a disaster.

You could add another 20 candidates to the current flock of postulants for president and still not find one who calls the venture a success. The public widely believes that it was a war poorly conceived, unnecessary, and that had little or nothing to do with defending and protecting America. No amount of grandstanding and applauding our troops can camouflage that fact. These celebrations of our troops at arenas of all shapes and sizes tug on our heartstrings. After all, the soldiers we applaud come from our own communities, and how can we not admire their selfless sacrifice? Yet to deploy them on a baseball diamond amounts to dangerous propaganda. It reinforces the patently false premise that our recent wars were fought to defend our freedom. It reinforces the notion that the enemies we face in the world can only be defeated by military means, when recent sad history teaches us that a massive military presence does not protect us from terrorists. And now the Syracuse University football squad invades Fort Drum. It appears to me not only ridiculous, but dangerous, to see the images young football players being allowed to fondle machine guns during a training camp with the troops at Fort Drum. They are not there just to play, but to be played. It’s one thing to share a facility, to provide a break from the tedium for the troops. But that’s not what’s happening at Fort Drum. Like the Super Bowl flyovers and the militarized seventh-inning stretch, such mingling serves to wash the brains of a nation at play in the service of war. Those guns are not toys. Militarism is not the same as love of country. To confuse the two endangers young lives. War is not a game, it’s not a sport. If we glorify guns and killing in the arena, we have no right to act surprised at the world we find when we exit the stadium. SNT

“I like the idea of knowing where food comes from,’’ he says. “I do go to Wegmans once in a while, because you can’t escape it.’’ Pawliw says his ultimate goal is to address the issue of food accessibility and “food deserts’’ in the city by developing a local foods market that also contains a demonstration kitchen and teaching facility. “I like Swiss chard,’’ he says. “I know what Swiss chard is, but a lot of people don’t. This way, you can teach people and show that it’s really easy to cook.’’ For more information, visit facebook.com/pages/Farm-toFork-101/849256381818401. There will be another Farm to Fork event scheduled for Oct. 12 at The York. Tickets for the October program will go on sale after the Sept. 14 event.

LEARNING ABOUT LOCAL FARMS AND FOOD

M

ark Pawliw has worked in the restaurant business 22 of his 37 years. Several years ago, while working toward his bachelor’s degree in geography at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School, as well as working full time in local restaurants, Pawliw took an elective course — and found his passion.

The Farm to Fork course, offered through the Food Studies Program at SU’s Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, is an exploration of seasonal, local, regional and sustainable food systems as well as a hands-on culinary lab. It left Pawliw with a greater understanding and appreciation of food and where it comes from, an eagerness to connect with local farmers and food producers and a determination to build on what he has learned. Enter “Farm to Fork 101,’’ a series of monthly dining and learning events Pawliw introduced in July. The third edition will be held at Francesca’s Cucina, where Pawliw works as a server. The program, to be held in the restaurant’s banquet room, will be a Tuscan-themed, demonstration-style teaching and sampling event. Francesca’s chefs Paul Dicuia and Damon Gusman will prepare multiple courses and field questions as they work, while baker Tiffany Youngman will prepare tiramisu for dessert. The menu is still being developed, but will likely feature a course with fresh house-made cheeses and

homegrown tomatoes, a meat course like coffee-rubbed braciole and plenty of in-season produce. “Summer is a great time to be doing these events,’’ Pawliw says. “People are loving them. The last one was more hands-on and people got to cook the food.’’ Participating farms include Main Street Farms, Homer (produce), WW Longhorn Ranch, Bernhards Bay and Shotwell Brook Farms, Skaneateles (pastured meats, poultry and eggs). Cafe Kubal will provide coffee and after-dinner drinks and Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars will offer a selection of wines. Tickets cost $65 and include approximately seven food samples and wine tastings. Seating is limited. For more information and to purchase tickets, go to squareup.com/market/farm-to-fork-101/ farm-to-fork-1. Pawliw isn’t a chef, but he is a home cook, enthusiastic eater and buy-local advocate who shops weekly for meat, produce, eggs, cheeses and more at the Central New York Regional Market and often again on Tuesdays at the Downtown Syracuse Farmers Market.

Inside Story on Fayetteville Market

Speaking of buying local and eating in season: The Fayetteville Farmers Market, held Thursdays, noon to 6 p.m., at the Towne Center at Fayetteville, will move indoors to the center’s community room for late fall and winter, beginning in November. The open-air market continues Thursdays through Oct. 15. The winter market will take place noon to 3 p.m. the second Thursday of the month, starting Nov. 12. Additional dates include Dec. 10, Jan. 14, Feb. 11, March 10 and April 14. For more information, go to fayetteville farmersmarketcny.com or facebook.com/ FayettevilleFarmersMarketCNY. THE NEXT

BIG

THING Music writer Jessica Novak on the Lakeside Amphitheater, a potential game-changer for local concerts and the New York State Fair. Photos by Michael Davis

I

t’s been a fast track for the new Lakeview Amphitheater. Since a $100 million pledge was announced to clean up the Onondaga Lake shores in January 2014 and plans for a 17,500-seat venue were shared in July 2014, it’s been nonstop updates on the state of the site and anticipation of the acts. On Thursday, Sept. 3, 7:30 p.m., the theater will be put to the test when popular country star Miranda Lambert christens it with the first-ever performance.

“It’s been exciting watching the progress,” says Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney. “It’s gone very quickly. The first piece of steel went up on May 1 and now there’s a concert. Very exciting.” Although thoughts on the site have been divisive, with many voicing concerns over the wastebed that lurks for 80 feet beneath the lawn, Mahoney assures it’s the best use of the location. “There’s been talk of this for this location for a long time,” Mahoney says. “It’s not something that came about suddenly. One of the only benefits to having one of the most polluted lakes in the country is that 90 percent of the shoreline is county-owned. We have this asset that no other community has. We have this lake and shoreline that’s all public. Public dollars are used to give public access.” The amphitheater will be in a park setting on a lake that is surrounded by bike trails and within a short distance of the New York State Fair, which is another piece of the plan. The goal is 09.02.15 - 09.08.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

to retire the fair’s grandstand, thus freeing up space on the fairgrounds while opening up a venue that can be used throughout the entire summer. “The grandstand is not a place where artists want to play,” Mahoney says. “Over time, it’s been more difficult to book shows there. It’s not as conducive to concerts as competing facilities like Saratoga (Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs), CMAC (Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua) and Darien Lake.” The county sought to fix the problem by building the amphitheater on the scenic peninsula, but not without thorough investigation of the land beneath it. Although the wastebeds have been called corrosive and potentially toxic, Mahoney promises there is no threat to audiences. “There’s been a lot of misinformation,” she says. “It’s not toxic. It’s a byproduct of Allied Chemical, similar to baking soda, called soda ash. There is not a piece of property in Onondaga

County that’s been more analyzed. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) have signed off on the plan. It exists and needs to be capped. Why spend millions and decades moving it just to cap it somewhere else? We capped it with a county park and amphitheater.” The amphitheater is also part of a bigger state initiative to make the fairgrounds more of a year-round destination, with its equestrian facilities, ice arena and more. “We’ve been welcoming people to our community with the State Fair for more than 100 years,” Mahoney says. “And we’re not putting our best foot forward. People are coming for the fair and leaving without an accurate picture of Central New York. We’re hoping to have a conceptual plan available during the fair for people to weigh in on, then design it.” Plans also include a park for recreational vehicles, which would also prove valuable to the amphitheater, allowing people to stay overnight, similar to Darien Lake. Live Nation, current promoter of the venue, has also pinpointed the site as an ideal location for multiday festivals. “On a basic level, it is a great facility that’s going to add to the quality of life,” Mahoney says. “But it

will also allow people who like live music, especially in the summer, the chance to not travel. They won’t have to go to Darien Lake. We fund our community operations significantly with sales tax. People ask why we’re spending money on this rather than roads and pipes. But you get your resources to fix the roads and infrastructure through sales tax. By bringing people to the amphitheater, we’ll be spinning sales tax off of that.” The Lakeside Amphitheater will have about 5,000 covered seats, with lawn seating of up to 12,500. In comparison to other venues, SPAC has 5,100 reserved seats and 20,000 lawn seats; CMAC boasts 5,000 seats and 10,000 on the lawn; and Darien Lake features 7,000 covered seats plus 13,000 lawn seats. Mahoney also emphasizes that the amphitheater will help keep young people in the community by providing them more than just jobs, but also an atmosphere. “We need to recognize what young people are looking for,” she says. “A vibrant downtown is one thing, but also something cool, like this amphitheater. We need to do things in a way that will attract young people to stay here. I have four teenage boys who travel to Saratoga for concerts. They are really going to love having a facility here in town. That combined with the vibrancy of downtown, everything we do is a lens of what’s best for the next generation.” SNT

Miranda Lambert performs on Thursday, Sept. 3, 7:30 p.m., at the new Lakeview Amphitheater, 490 Restoration Way. Tickets are $75 and $95, with $35 lawn seats; free admission to the State Fair is also included. For more information, visit ongovconcerts.com. Meanwhile, Patti LaBelle will play the final concert at the State Fair Grandstand on Thursday, Sept. 3, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and $20. TOPIC: STAGE

Cortland Repertory Theatre’s 2015 summer season ends this weekend with Suds, yet the new CRT Downtown, 24 Port Watson St., TAKE Cortland, will kick off in October with a run of Always, Patsy Cline. Dial (607) 756-2627 for details.

BUBBLE UP WITH SUDS’ SOCKO SONGLIST

The always-popular musical-revue genre relies on barely-there plot structures in order for the selected songs to carry the show. And plots don’t get much simpler than the gimmick that drives Suds, which closes the summer season at Cortland Repertory Theater. Subtitled “The Rocking 60s Musical Soap Opera,” Suds creators Melinda Gilb, Steve Gunderson and Bryan Scott spin a fanciful tale about Washerama clothes-folder Cindy (Lilli Babb), who plans to celebrate her happy birthday. (A radio broadcast says that Cindy shares the same birth date with Kitty Carlisle and Alan Ladd.) Alas, Cindy’s pen-pal boyfriend turns out to be a Hoboken heel who has given her the heave-ho with a Dear John letter. It seems he has found a new gal with better penmanship. Will she wash that man right out of her hair? No, Cindy instead decides to end it all, courtesy of strangulation by the spin-cycle washer agitator. To her rescue comes two squabbling guardian angels: the inexperienced Dee Dee (Hannah Zilber) and the brassy, tough-talking veteran Marge (Rachel Valencich). From there, theatergoers can imagine It’s a Wonderful Life yoked to a jukebox crammed with girl-group platters that

12

S Y R A C U S E

tion that was miles above most of the other Top 40 chart hits during the 1960s. And the second act features a welcome mini-salute to Petula Clark and the swinging British big-band sound. The comic gags range from Clorox to Corvairs to Cuban crises, all of it guided with quicksilver timing by director-choreographer Robin Levine. Indeed, some of the high-stepping hoofing leaves the three female leads breathlessly keeping up with the pace, yet they play their roles with an affectionate verve. Lilli Babb manages to make Cindy’s innocence more appealing than cloying, even when her character’s head is stuck in the washer. Hannah Zilber likewise gets plenty of comic mileage from her ditzy blonde Dee Dee, while Rachel Valencich scores as redhead bombshell Marge, bedecked with a bouffant hairdo and Capris. On the fringes lurks Tony Coslett, who incarnates an amusing string of male suitors as well as the mysterious Mrs. Halo. Costume designer Jimmy Johansmeyer opts for pastel togs in shades of turquoise, while scenic designer Shelly Barrish offers telling Laundromat details such as boxes of Duz soap flakes, dryers with padlocks and washers in drab hues of yellow and orange. Producing artistic director Kerby Thompson stated during the introduction that Cortland Repertory has notched its “second highest-attended season ever.” With shows like the bouncy, bubbly and buoyant Suds, it’s easy to understand why. matter. More than 40 solid-gold musical earwigs from the golden age of AM radio are on hand, all of them belted out with sincere gusto. Suds’ framework does allow for some clever cruisin’ down memory lane, as audiences will even anticipate certain song cues before they are warbled. There are some surprises along the way, such as a dominatrix flourish for Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walking,” and comic moments that are connected to the old TV commercial for the Mystery Date gameboard. You have to

be an Ann-Margret aficionado, however, to parse the erotic significance of the reference, “He took me to see Kitten with a Whip 17 times!” The hit parade hews closer to standards such as “The Locomotion,” “Where the Boys Are” and many others amid the shoop-shoops, sha-la-las and doo-wop ditties. Yet the Suds creators also play favorites. There is a medley of wonderful tracks from the Burt Bacharach-Hal David catalog (think “Walk On By” and “Don’t Make Me Over”), songs that boasted a level of musical sophistica-

QUICK TAKE

NO TALK FROM TAUK

I

t’s not easy being an instrumental rock fusion band. But Tauk has made it work. In just three years, the New York City-based outfit has gone from driving 13 hours between low-paying gigs to opening shows for Umphrey’s McGee. They once fielded questions such as “When are you going to get a singer?” Now they’re getting comments more like, “It’s refreshing you don’t have vocals.” There are many reasons why. Tauk, which will visit Funk ’N Waffles Downtown, 313 S. Clinton St., on Tuesday, Sept. 8, was born out of friendships, but built out of hunger. “When we first started playing shows, the mentality was let’s get any and every gig we can get,” says guitarist Matt Jalbert. “We needed to get our name out there. We played weird shows at odd places, not the best venues, and we were figuring out how to write songs. It’s a challenge getting people to pay attention, especially when there are no lyrics.” Band members also include bassist Charlie Dolan, keyboardist Alric “A.C.” Carter and drummer Isaac Teel. They grew up around each other in Long Island and Staten Island, jamming together throughout middle and high school. The musicians stayed in touch throughout college even though they all went to different schools. Following their collegiate years, Tauk was born and the weird venues ensued. “We started gigging mostly around the Northeast, then branched out from there,” recalls Jalbert. “We

started playing some smaller festivals with Pigeons Playing Ping-Pong and we would just try to get in front of people with open minds for music. We’d start with 30 to 40 people every time we came through a town and grew more and more every time.” After the band opened last year for Umphrey’s McGee, it’s been a progressively wild whirlwind ever since. “Those kinds of opportunities, we try to make the most of them,” Jalbert says. “We really try to put our best foot forward.” The change in the crowds has also affected Tauk’s music. “We used to show up and have to get the

audience’s attention,” Jalbert says. “Now we show up at venues and people know our material. They’re there for us. Now it’s more like, let’s give them a show. It’s a different approach. It’s nice!” The band has released several studio albums, but will release their first live album, Headroom, on Friday, Sept. 3. It’s also the band’s first with 1320 Records. “We usually go in to record an album with a huge focus,” Jalbert explains. “We try to knock it out and do our best. But we’re limited to a certain extent compared to what we do live. Live, there is a certain energy we had to capture. We wanted to capture what it’s like to go to a Tauk show.” The live shows feature more than music. With lights dancing around the vibrant band, no one is missing a singer these days. “We’re not opposed to working with other musicians,” Jalbert says. “The singer thing just hasn’t happened yet and it’s definitely not a goal to end up with a singer. It’s a challenge for us, and the crowd, I think, to accept it.” Jalbert thinks the Funk ’N Waffles show will be more of a good time than challenging, however. “I guarantee it will be a lot of fun,” he says. “We’ve got new songs we’re playing and we’re really pumped. We’ll be fresh and ready to go. It’s something new for people to check out.” SNT

Advice from the Artist:

“Do what you believe you want to do. Don’t try to cater to anyone. People were always pressuring us to get a singer. We stuck with our gut and said, ‘No, this is what we want to do.’ Now it’s the most satisfying thing. I think we’ve earned it. We’ve gone through a lot of stuff just to do this. Go through a lot of crappy gigs and then good things will happen.” syracusenewtimes.com | 09.02.15 - 09.08.15

ORANGE FOOTBALL: NOWHERE TO GO BUT UP

If new Syracuse University athletic director Mark Coyle has heard it once, he has heard it a thousand times: How are you going to fix the football program? Hired in June from Idaho’s Boise State University, Coyle took over at SU in early July and made it clear from the start that he was going to take his time and conduct a thorough review that would require “truthful conversations” with third-year football coach Scott Shafer. “I say that we have to live in truth, always,” Coyle said. Fair enough. Now here’s the next big question: Can Coyle handle the truth? As SU football fans know, the sobering truth is that the Orange football program has been in a rut for more than a decade. SU is 61-97 with just three bowl appearances in the past 13 seasons under four coaches (Paul Pasqualoni, Greg Robinson, Doug Marrone and Shafer). To put that in perspective, Atlantic Coast Conference also-ran Wake Forest — the only team picked to finish below the Orange this season in the ACC’s Atlantic Division — is 74-86 over the last 13 years with five bowl appearances. So there is much work to be done for the Orange to fulfill Coyle’s stated aim of being consistently competitive in the ACC and challenging for bowl games. This year’s team has an opportunity to get off to a nice start as it plays its first four games at the Carrier Dome against Rhode Island, Wake Forest, Central Michigan and LSU. The Orange can’t take anything for granted after last year’s 3-9 showing, but a 3-0 start before facing national power LSU is a realistic goal given the quality of competition. As Orange fans gear up for the 7 p.m. opener on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Dome, here are five storylines to follow this season: 1. Hunt’s Return. The Orange offense struggled last season even before starting quarterback Terrel Hunt suffered a season-ending leg injury late in the fifth game. But clearly a healthy Hunt gives SU’s offense the best chance to rebound from a horrendous season in which it reached the end zone on just 8.4 percent

Scott Shafer. Michael Davis photo

of its drives — the fourth-worst touchdown percentage among major conference teams in the last decade. Hunt, a senior who ranks 10th on SU’s all-time list with 2,621 passing yards, said during training camp that his time on the sideline was beneficial because he became a better student of the game and a better leader as he was able to support his teammates during the game. “I feel good. I’m excited to be out there,” Hunt said. “Everything is fine. My body feels healthy, so everything is going well.” 2. Lester’s Game Plans. By the middle of last season, it was obvious that the Orange’s offensive personnel didn’t fit offensive coordinator George McDonald’s gun-read system that relied on quick passes and perimeter speed. So in a rare in-season move, Shafer demoted McDonald to wide receivers coach and promoted quarterbacks coach Tim Lester to offensive coordinator. The offense under Lester failed to produce more points or yardage, but he was stuck running the old system without Hunt and several other offensive players who were injured. Lester, who like McDonald had never been a Division I coordinator, employs a scheme that features downhill running with zone-read

packages, timing routes and more passes down the field. That should maximize the talents of SU’s best skill position players: hybrid back Erv Phillips and wide receivers Steve Ishmael and Brisly Estime. “I feel really strongly about where we’re headed,” Shafer said when asked about how his team’s personnel fits Lester’s offense. “I feel good about it. I think things fit better than they have in the past.” 3. The Revamped Defense. SU lost eight starters from last year’s defense that finished among the top 40 in the country in run defense, pass defense and scoring defense despite getting little help from the offense in terms of field position and time of possession. But defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough is among the best coordinators in the ACC, and from all accounts it appears the Orange defense lacks only experience, not talent. Shafer said sophomore middle linebacker Zaire Franklin has that “it factor” that makes him the leader of the defense. “We want to improve on what we did last year,” Franklin said. “That’s all we can ask. Even though we had a lot of turnover, we have a lot of guys stepping up and working hard. We want to be better than last year.”

4. Shafer’s Job Security. Obviously, Shafer and Coyle have had several discussions about the state of the program and it appears Coyle is willing to stick to his “you-need-to-take-a-deep-breath” philosophy. “As (Coyle) put it, it’s not a dash, it’s a marathon,” Shafer said. While that’s the way Coyle should look at it, the truth is that college football is a results-based business. And if SU is suffering through another 3-9 season, the rumors will fly about Shafer’s impending dismissal. 5. The Future of the Carrier Dome. Will it stay or will it go? And if stays, what renovations will take place? Coyle said the Dome is a “friend” and SU has to make it a place where no other team wants to play. For what it’s worth, Coyle is open to anything as he comes to SU from a school that has blue turf at its home stadium. “When visiting teams come there for the first time, they spend the first quarter staring at the blue. That’s an advantage for Boise State,” Coyle said. “As small as that sounds, it makes a difference. If we can do the right renovations in the Dome and create the atmosphere we want to create, there’s no doubt it can be a special place.” SNT

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY By Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19) “Excess is the com-

mon substitute for energy,” said poet Marianne Moore. That’s a problem you should watch out for in the coming weeks. According to my astrological projections, you’re a bit less lively and dynamic than usual. And you may be tempted to compensate by engaging in extreme behavior or resorting to a contrived show of force. Please don’t! A better strategy would be to recharge your power. Lay low and take extra good care of yourself. Get high-quality food, sleep, entertainment, art, love and relaxation.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) For a pregnant

woman, the fetus often begins to move for the first time during the fifth month of gestation. The sensation may resemble popcorn popping or a butterfly fluttering. It’s small but dramatic: the distinct evidence that a live creature is growing inside her. Even if you are not literally expecting a baby, and even if you are male, I suspect you will soon feel the metaphorical equivalent of a fetus’ first kicks. You’re not ready to give birth yet, of course, but you are well on your way to generating a new creation.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) “Since U Been

Gone” is a pop song recorded by vocalist Kelly Clarkson. She won a Grammy for it, and made a lot of money from its sales. But two other singers turned down the chance to make it their own before Clarkson got her shot. The people who wrote the tune offered it first to Pink and then to Hillary Duff, but neither accepted. Don’t be like those two singers, Gemini. Be like Clarkson. Recognize opportunities when they are presented to you, even if they are in disguise or partially cloaked.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) “Going with the

flow” sounds easy and relaxing, but here’s another side of the truth: Sometimes it can kick your ass. The rippling current you’re floating on may swell up into a boisterous wave. The surge of the stream might get so hard and fast that your ride becomes more spirited than you anticipated. And yet I still think that going with the flow is your best strategy in the coming weeks. It will eventually deliver you to where you need to go, even if there are bouncy surprises along the way.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) “Money doesn’t make

you happy,” said movie star and ex-California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I now have $50 million, but I was just as happy when I had $48 million.” Despite his avowal, I’m guessing that extra money would indeed make you at least somewhat happier. And the good news is that the coming months will be prime time for you to boost your economic fortunes. Your ability to attract good financial luck will be greater than usual, and it will zoom even higher if you focus on getting better educated and organized about how to bring more wealth your way.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “I stand up next

to a mountain, and I chop it down with the edge of my hand.” So sang Jimi Hendrix in his raucous psychedelic tune “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” We could view his statement as an example of delusional grandiosity, and dismiss it as meaningless. Or we could say it’s a funny and brash boast that Hendrix made as he imagined himself to be a mythic hero capable of unlikely feats. For the purposes of this horoscope, let’s go with the latter interpretation. I encourage you to dream up a slew of extravagant brags about the outlandish magic powers you have at your disposal. I bet it will rouse hidden reserves of energy that will enhance your more practical powers.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s the phase of

your cycle when you have maximum power to transform yourself. If you work hard to rectify and purify your inner life, you will be able to generate a transcendent release. Moreover, you may tap into previously dormant or inaccessible aspects of your soul’s code. Here are some tips on how to fully activate this magic. 1. Without any ambivalence, banish ghosts that are more

trouble than they are worth. 2. Identify the one bad habit you most want to dissolve, and replace it with a good habit. 3. Forgive everyone, including yourself. 4. Play a joke on your fear. 5. Discard or give away material objects that no longer have any meaning or use.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) I hope you’re not

getting bored with all of the good news I have been delivering in recent weeks. I’m sorry if I sound like I’m sugarcoating or whitewashing, but I swear I’m simply reporting the truth about the cosmic omens. Your karma is extra sweet these days. You do have a few obstacles, but they are weaker than usual. So I’m afraid you will have to tolerate my rosy prophecies for a while longer. Stop reading now if you can’t bear to receive a few more buoyant beams. This is your last warning! Your web of allies is getting more resilient and interesting. You’re expressing just the right mix of wise selfishness and enlightened helpfulness. As your influence increases, you are becoming even more responsible about wielding it.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) When

16th-century Spanish invaders arrived in the land of the Mayans, they found a civilization that was in many ways highly advanced. The native people had a superior medical system and calendar. They built impressive cities with sophisticated architecture and paved roads. They were prolific artists, and had a profound understanding of mathematics and astronomy. And yet they did not make or use wheeled vehicles, which had been common in much of the rest of the world for more than 2,000 years. I see a certain similarity between this odd disjunction and your life. Although you’re mostly competent and authoritative, you are neglecting to employ a certain resource that would enhance your competence and authority even further. Fix this oversight!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) If you have

ever fantasized about taking a pilgrimage to a wild frontier or sacred sanctuary or your ancestral homeland, the next 10 months will be an excellent time to do it. And the best time to plan such an adventure will be the coming two weeks. Keep the following questions in mind as you brainstorm. 1. What are your life’s greatest mysteries, and what sort of journey might bring an awakening that clarifies them? 2. Where could you go in order to clarify the curious yearnings that you have never fully understood? 3. What power spot on planet Earth might activate the changes you most want to make in your life?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) When he died at

age 77 in 1905, Aquarian author Jules Verne had published 54 books. You’ve probably heard of his science-fiction novels Journey to the Center of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He was a major influence on numerous writers, including Jean-Paul Sartre, J.R.R. Tolkien and Arthur Rimbaud. But one of his manuscripts never made it into book form. When he finished it in 1863, his publisher refused to publish it, so Verne stashed it in a safe. It remained there until his great-grandson discovered it in 1989. Five years later, Verne’s “lost novel,” Paris in the Twentieth Century, went on sale for the first time. I suspect that in the coming months, you may have a comparable experience, Aquarius. An old dream that was lost or never fulfilled may be available for recovery and resuscitation.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “I enjoy using

the comedy technique of self-deprecation,” says stand-up comic Arnold Brown, “but I’m not very good at it.” Your task in the coming weeks, Pisces, is to undermine your own skills at self-deprecation. You may think they are too strong and entrenched to undo and unlearn, but I don’t — especially now, when the cosmic forces are conspiring to prove to you how beautiful you are. Cooperate with those cosmic forces! Exploit the advantages they are providing. Inundate yourself with approval, praise and naked flattery.
