TO Z The Life and Times of Art Zimmer An exciting new book commissioned by Shirley Sherburne Zimmer Edited by Lois Gridley Available from LOG CABIN BOOKS

www.logcabinbooks.com

Art Zimmer has led an intriguing life for 77 years. A hard-working and entrepreneurial-minded farm boy from Randallsville, New York, he barely graduated from Hamilton High. Few people predicted that he would own 13 major businesses, including the Syracuse New Times. In his long career he encountered people from all over the world, such as His Royal Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait, boxing champ George Foreman, 1950s rock-n-roll star Jerry Lee Lewis, Grammy-winning singer Lou Rawls, Saddam Hussein’s son Uday Hussein, and Maria Von Trapp, whose life was immortalized in “The Sound of Music.” Along the way, he formed strong opinions about government and politicians in Syracuse and New York State. It is all, and much more, in the book.

Police in Virginia Beach, Va., identified Dominyk Antonio Alfonseca, 23, as their bank-robbery suspect after he posted video on social media showing the teller stuffing money into a bag and a picture of a note asking for $150,000 (but adding “please”). Alfonseca insisted that posting the video proves it wasn’t robbery. “I don’t think I would videotape it, post the picture of the letter and do that all to come to jail,” he said, adding, “There are a lot of things on my Instagram that have nothing to do with what happened.” (Portsmouth’s WAVY-TV)

Canadians now have shorter attention spans than goldfish, thanks to widespread use of mobile digital devices. Microsoft Corp. researchers, who reviewed surveys of more than 2,000 Canadians, determined that attention spans have fallen from an average of 12 seconds in 2000 to eight seconds today. They noted that goldfish average a nine-second attention span. (Ottawa Citizen)

A neighbor who spotted a burglary suspect in Hempstead, N.Y., photographed him when he stopped to try on Air Jordan sneakers that were part of stolen goods. He gave police the photo, which showed the suspect wearing red boxers above his jeans. Officer Russell Harris was looking in his rear-view mirror near the crime scene and saw “a guy bending over” putting out the garbage. “Lo and behold, I see red underwear standing out.” He arrested Taykim Ross, 18. APOPLECTIC ABOUT APOSTROPHES

A

s a region, we struggle with punctuation, apostrophes in particular. Our latest embarrassment: On opening night of the Syracuse University football season, the turf at the Carrier Dome was inscribed with the phrase, “Ernie Davis Legend’s Field.” Apostrophe need not apply. Even if the title had been correctly punctuated, it’s clumsy. What does it mean? Don’t forget Jim Brown! He was legendary, too! SU athletics has committed a number of hi-viz typos lately, but they’re not alone. The apostrophe in Wegmans, our most visible merchant, has been MIA since 1931. Just the other day I noticed a Flip Wilson quote scrawled on the chalkboard menu of an East Side sweet shop. It read: “If you think nobody cares if your alive, try missing a couple of car payments.” Try adding an apostrophe — and a vowel. Because we all make mistakes with the language — I more than most — I thought it might be helpful to offer an apostrophe-centric grammar tutorial. Can you spot the errors in these sentences? 1. Chads totally awesome day at Destiny USA included unlocking his handcuffs, fleeing security and trying to evade police by jumping into Onondaga Creek. What’s wrong: Only one Chad — not, as the above sentence implies, multiple Chads — was accused of shoplifting a bag of merchandise at the

Hiawatha Correctional Facility and trying to swim to freedom. To fix the sentence, give Chad a name that will command more respect behind bars. I suggest “Magnus.” Beyond that, this is no time to fixate on apostrophe placement. Magnus needs to make sure his tetanus shot is up to date, and get the counseling he clearly needs. Good Lord! What kind of madman would intentionally jump in Onondaga Lake or its fetid source waters? Don’t answer that. 2. One problem with the Carrier Dome is that on warm days it get’s so hot and steamy that a thick beer’s haze makes it hard to see Ernestine Davidson’s Legos’ Field. What’s wrong: There are no errors in this sentence. Just testing to see if your paying attention. 3. Their’s a really long line at the Pizza Hut stall at Taste of Syracuse, if you’ven’t been they’re yet. What’s wrong: It makes no sense — grammatically or otherwise — that there really was a Pizza Hut stall at Taste of Syracuse. What should be an annual celebration of local culinary talent mustint’ be

co-opted by international mega-corportations pushing dumbed-down, mass-produced pseudo-food. This community is butter than that. We should aspire to excellence at all times, just like the great Eduardo Dinkelfelder did on Legionaire’s Field. That said, I will confess to some curiosity about Pizza Hut’s new salted pretzel crust. Please contact me — discreetly — if you’ve’ tried it. 4. When asked by his supervisor if he could fix the leaking steam valve at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station No. 1, Darrell replied, “Sorry, cant.” What’s wrong: Without an apostrophe after the “n” in cant, Darrell is apologizing to the qualities of hypocrisy and sanctimoniosity, which makes no sense. The sentence should be tweaked so that Darrell replies: “Hey, no problem — just gotta run out to my truck and get my, um, torque wrench. Yes! That’s it — torque wrench. Back in a jiffy.... no, really. ” 5. Savagely hung over, Clem thought about the half-bag of barbecued Fritos waiting for him back in the camper and about whether he should get a third spider tattoo on his neck and then his mind drifted to Colette, prompting him to lean to his left so he could assess her ample-but-not-unsightly rear-end as she worked the ring toss game — such a ripoff! — and he wondered if the two of them would be going at it again tonight behind the 4-H barn and it was in that moment that his thoughts were rudely interrupted by the sound of colliding roller coaster cars, and so it was — amid the clanging metal and childrens’ screams — that Clem came to understand that he would not be a roller coaster operator much longer. What’s wrong: In the possessive, plural nouns such as “children” require the apostrophe before the “s” — not after. Similarly, Clem should focus on Colette’s character and spirituality foremost. Her physical attributes should be secondary. Linguistically speaking, Clem needs to keep his apostrophe in his pants. SNT

THE MORO THE MERRIER

Moro’s Kitchen isn’t your ordinary Central New York Italian restaurant. Sure, you’ll find meatballs and red sauce and pasta and polenta. Those traditional favorites, inspired by the classic home cooking of Italian mothers and grandmothers, are taken in a fresh new direction by executive chef Ed Moro. You’ll also find special appetizers like an Italian take on foie gras with figs and balsamic strawberries, and tuna crudo (raw fish, Italian style) with olives and capers. Moro’s Italian Kitchen, sister restaurant of Moro’s Table in Auburn, is making and selling a lot of pasta: pappardelle, ravioli, rigatoni, spaghetti, agnoletti, you name it. Yet beef, pork, veal, poultry and fish and seafood get their due, too. “It’s a really food-driven restaurant, but upscale casual,’’ says Moro, co-owner of both restaurants with his wife, Beth. “We want people to come and have a good time. “We’re Italian, but a lighter, more modern style,’’ Moro says of the casual, flexible menu. Breads and desserts are made in-house. Enjoy a glass or two of wine at the bar and share a platter of cured meats and cheeses or an order of zucchini and roasted pepper bruschetta. Or order a more formal dinner, with entrees, side dishes or a plate of pasta to share. Just be sure to make a reservation. Moro says the Italian Kitchen has been doing a brisk dinner business, and that lunch has been slower to catch on. Part of that, he says, probably stems from the fact that Moro’s Table is open for dinner only. Heading into fall, Moro’s Italian Kitchen will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays for lunch and dinner, and closed Sundays and Mondays. The new restaurant is a re-imagining of the space formerly occupied by Garage Eatz and Joe’s Pasta Garage, on Fennell Street. The Moros have completely remodeled the space, adding a small, marble-top bar and giving the dining room a bright, sleek look. If you’re after an espresso, cappuccino, latte or something sweet, like gelato, sorbeto, cannoli, tiramisu or olive oil cake madeleines, don’t miss Moro’s Dolce. This sweet spot, at the back of the restaurant, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Gelato flavors change regularly, and have included pistachio,

coconut, salted caramel and stracciatella. Oreo cookie was a big hit with kids. Moro credits his dedicated staff, including chef de cuisine Max Hitchcock and chef de cuisine Allyson Ciampi (at Moro’s Table) with easing the transition and helping him and Beth juggle the demands of two restaurants. “We couldn’t do it without them,’’ he says. Moro’s Kitchen is at 28 Jordan St., Skaneateles. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The menu is available for takeout. Occupying its own space in the restaurant is Moro’s Dolce, offering coffee, espresso drinks, housemade gelato and sorbeto, cannoli and more. Hours for Moro’s Dolce are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. For information and reservations, call 685-6116 or visit moroskitchen.com. Sax symbol Jimmy Cavallo, Syracuse’s godfather of rock’n’roll, returns to play his final Festa Italiana By Russ Tarby

Michael Davis photos

immy Cavallo’s no social activist. He never carried a protest sign or marched for civil rights. But as a groundbreaking jump-blues musician and bandleader, he did more than any other native Syracusan to usher black culture into the American mainstream.

An innately talented singer and saxophonist, Cavallo practically invented rock’n’roll. In 1949 he introduced the new music to Syracuse at a corner bar called Sorrento’s a half-decade before anyone had heard of Elvis Presley. Before Cavallo dropped out of North High School at age 17 to join the Navy in 1944, he’d been making the scene at the Salt City’s black nightclubs, soaking up the sounds of what would eventually be called rhythm’n’blues. “I sat in with black musicians all the time at the Penguin Grill on South State Street,” Cavallo recalled during a telephone interview earlier this month. “Sax Hunter’s combo welcomed me, and the drummer Steeple Jenkins. I sat in constantly with those guys at the Penguin and the Embassy and the 800 Club. They loved me.” And Cavallo loved the music. “I had a feeling for it,” he says of the jump-blues that was popular at the time. He was especially taken by black saxophonist Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five, who scored massive hits on the “race record” charts with 1944’s “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby” and 1946’s “Caldonia.” “You see,” Cavallo explains, “I’d been playing third alto in the big band at Prescott Junior High School, playing harmony lines. I like big band

09.09.15 - 09.15.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

music, but being in a harmony chair used to drive me up a wall. I knew I had to do more than that. I wanted to be out front like Louis Jordan, playing the melody. So I wanted to lead a small group.” As a kid, Cavallo learned to read music. Yet as trumpeter-singer Louis Prima once said, “I can read a bit but not enough to hurt me none.” Because he’d been so well-accepted at Syracuse’s South Side jam sessions, when his Navy service took him to Washington, D.C., Cavallo haunted black nightspots in the nation’s capital and beyond. “I hung out at a lot of clubs in the South,” he recalls. “That was R’n’B. Some of those places were like chicken shacks with a little slide slot on the door where you’d identify yourself before they’d let you in.” Cavallo’s alto sax was his key to the highway. His desire and determination earned him respect among musicians, both black and white. “In the South, you had to be careful, because people frowned on it, the idea of whites and blacks mixing,” he says. “But I’d been around black people all my life, mostly musicians. I think of musicians like soldiers: They have a brotherhood. In the brotherhood of musicians, there’s no color line.”

Shagging in Bop City

Cavallo got his first taste of show-biz success in 1948 and ’49, playing black jump-blues at places like Bop City in Carolina Beach, N.C. “The kids down there were doing a jitterbug dance they called the Carolina Shag, and I gave it some kick,” he remembers. “The white kids were getting into the black music, but they couldn’t get into black clubs.” Instead, they filled whatever venues booked the all-white Jimmy Cavallo and the House Rockers. “We had a core of 50 or 60 fans who followed me all over the state,” he says. They danced the Shag to Cavallo’s renditions of “Early in the Mornin,’” “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and “Night Train.” Around that time he became friends with black saxophonist Paul “Hucklebuck” Williams, who encouraged the young Cavallo to stick with the kind of music that kept the kids dancing. In 1949, Williams scored his biggest hit with a dancecraze number, “The Hucklebuck,” a song Jimmy still includes in his repertoire. Meanwhile, Cavallo’s place in Shag history has been confirmed. In 2005, he was inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Awards Hall of Fame. While Cavallo got the Carolinas jumpin’ to the rhythms of urban black musicians, President Har-

ry Truman — one of our nation’s squarest leaders — decided to make civil rights a national issue. In 1948, South Carolina Gov. Strom Thurmond led a group of Southern Dixiecrats as they walked out of the Democratic Convention when Truman’s civil-rights platform passed. Truman integrated the U.S. military in July 1948 after black activists Grant Reynolds and A. Philip Randolph organized the Committee Against Jim Crow in Military Service and Training. During his Carolina years, Cavallo actually hired a black trumpeter. “I can’t remember the guy’s name, unfortunately, but we would tour tobacco warehouses where they put on big dances over in the Raleigh-Greensboro area. Once I remember we stopped for lunch at a little diner, and the man said, ‘You can’t come in here with him.’ Colored customers had to order their food through a window in the back, so the rest of us in the band — all white guys — we all got in line with him out back. That was Deep South crap, 1946, ’47, ’48. I remember seeing bonfires one night and a local guy told me, ‘You don’t even want to know what that is.’ It was the Ku Klux Klan, yeah! Very heavy!” But change was in the air. Finally in June 1949, Billboard magazine dropped the term “race records” aimed at a single demographic to the more inclusive “Rhythm and Blues” aimed at a wider audience.

House-Rocking at Sorrento’s

After finishing out the summer of 1949 at Carolina Beach, Cavallo moved back to Syracuse, where he switched to tenor saxophone, the instrument favored by artists such as Illinois Jacquet, Bullmoose Jackson and Jimmy’s mentor, Paul Williams. He and his House Rockers, including bassist Sam Barone, drummer Al Antonello and pianist Mike Peluso, began a three-year stand at Sorrento’s at the corner of Lodi and Division streets. Owned by his uncle, Red Monaco, Sorrento’s was a tiny corner restaurant that could accommodate fewer than 200 patrons, but it soon became the rockingest place in town. The House Rockers held forth there most weekends. One-time New York state jitterbug champion Bob Luongo (known to many for his Bob’s Barkers hot dog franchise) has fond memories of Sorrento’s. “It was a very cozy spot,” Luongo says. “The bar was always packed, and it was really the place to be when Jimmy was there singing and playing the horn. When

you hear Jimmy’s music, even now, you’ve just gotta dance!” Luongo recalls a few times when a few black folks walked into Sorrento’s to hear Jimmy’s honeydripper voice and honkin’ sax, but he said everybody was friendly. Cavallo remembers it a little differently, however. “Clubs in the North weren’t restricted like clubs in the South,” he recalls, “but there was still prejudice up here. You could even see it at Sorrento’s. Whenever black customers came in, everybody froze up, like they’re saying, ‘What are they doin’ here?’ Turns out they were students from the (Syracuse University) Hill. My uncle served them. He never threw them out, but you could feel a vibe in the crowd.”

Beach Blasts at DiCastro’s

In the summer of 1950, Cavallo started a steady gig at DiCastro’s in Sylvan Beach. He’d play occasional Fridays and Saturdays, plus Sunday matinees. Rosario “Roy” Barone, the younger brother of bass player Sam Barone, remembers many a pilgrimage to the hotspot on the shore of Oneida Lake. “Sure, we could see him at Sorrento’s, but that was a little place,” Barone says. “For us, when we were young guys, what we’d like to do was pile into one of our cars and head over to Sylvan Beach to catch him at DiCastro’s, a much bigger place that held a lot more people. And it would be packed. There were always a lot of girls there and everybody danced in those days, so that was a good way to meet young ladies. And everybody loved the music.” Cavallo’s combo routinely drew between 1,000 to 1,300 at DiCastro’s, which later became known as Pfohl’s Beachouse. An anonymous Internet poster recalls being transfixed by the scene there, even though he wasn’t old enough to get in. “I was too young to enter the club, but my older sister was a big fan while I had to listen from the outside,” he wrote. “Listening outside wasn’t too bad because in those pre-air conditioning days all the doors and windows were left open.” Ron Wray, known as the “Syracuse Music Authority,” says Cavallo was highly sought-after by area club owners. “They’d literally fight to get him into their places,” Wray says. He played the Clover Club, Lorenzo’s, Memory Lane, the StarLite, Andre’s Tic Toc Club and Luigi’s in Auburn. “His popularity spread to Colgate and Cornell universities. Everyone

was dancing the jitterbug and forming endless circles while Jimmy played his horn on top of bars and on tables.” That kid at DiCastro’s wasn’t the only underage rock fan fascinated by Cavallo. Circa 1952, Ron Wray reports, “Local police in Endicott had to close a club as 12- and 13-year-olds flocked to hear Jimmy sing, ‘Don’t Let Your Ding Dong Drag in the Dirt.’” They just don’t write song titles like that anymore!

Freed, Flicks and Singles

In 1951, the House Rocker cut two singles for the tiny BSD label, in the basement of the home of the label owner, Angelo Pergolito. BSD 1004 was “Ha Ha Ha Blues”/”Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” More interesting was BSD 1005, with its A-side cover of Jimmy Preston’s “Rock the Joint,” issued a solid year before Bill Haley’s version. The B-side featured Cavallo’s own “Leave Married Women Alone,” co-written with Diz Utley, who had played in his North Carolina band. By 1952, Cavallo had contracted with the Moe Gale Agency in the Big Apple. “So in 1953, ’54, ’55, I was on the road,” he recalls. “Gale put me on a black circuit. They booked me at Sparrow’s Beach, in Annapolis, Md.” Sparrow’s Beach was one of two Chesapeake Bay resorts that catered exclusively to African-Americans between the 1930s and the 1960s. “It was strictly a black beach,” Cavallo remembers. “No whites could go in there. They had like the Buddy Johnson Big Band and Arthur Prysock, who was a great singer, (tenor man) Red Prysock’s brother. They put me on that circuit. We were the only white band there.” History had never been his favorite subject, and Cavallo thought of Maryland as a Northern state, but it sat just below the Mason-Dixie Line. Once when he played during a battle of the bands at the Surf Club in Baltimore with Arthur Prysock, he was shocked that Prysock’s musicians were barred from interacting with audience members between sets. In 1956 everything changed for Jimmy Cavallo. The Gale Agency hooked him up with Alan Freed, the influential deejay at WINS in New York City. The House Rockers auditioned for Freed during one of his Rock’n’Roll Party broadcasts, and he helped them score a deal with Coral Records. “Freed was a real gentleman, always nice as could be to everyone,” Cavallo says. “But he always had a piece of the action on everybody he pushed.” NEXT PAGE

Jimmy’s Jumpin’ Schedule

Jimmy Cavallo circa early 1990s at Sorrento’s.

Irrepressible 88-year-old entertainer Jimmy Cavallo returns for the last time to downtown Syracuse’s Festa Italiana on Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. each day. Admission is free at the Festa main stage in front of City Hall, at the corner of East Washington and Montgomery streets. Cavallo has played the fest annually for two decades, but he enjoyed it more when his old friend, the late trumpeter Stan Colella, was involved, and later when the festival was helmed by Marie Felice, whom he calls “a lovely, classy lady.” Now that Colella’s gone and Felice no longer directs Festa Italiana, Cavallo’s calling it a day. Yet he remains

available for other festival bookings in Central New York and elsewhere. Recalling his glory days as Syracuse’s King of Clubs, Cavallo will perform at Vendetti’s Soft Rock, 2026 Teall Ave., Lyncourt, on Sunday, Sept. 20, 3 to 6 p.m. Admission to the rock’n’roll dance party is $25 and includes an Italian buffet, dessert and coffee. Call 3995700 or visit vendettissoftrock.com/. Throughout the weekend, Cavallo will be accompanied by bassist Chuck Sgroi, drummer Tony Licameli, keyboardist Dave Solazzo, saxophonist Joe Carello and guitarist Mike Diliddo.

ROCKET

Cavallo appeared at Freed’s legendary Brooklyn Paramount shows with Fats Domino and Big Joe Turner, followed by a star appearance in Freed’s 1956 cult movie classic Rock, Rock, Rock, which also featured then-13-year-old Tuesday Weld. He subsequently made history as the first white act at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, which the House Rockers played in December 1956 to promote the film eight months before Buddy Holly and The Crickets hit the stage there in August 1957. At the Apollo, Cavallo’s friend, black saxophonist Big Al Sears from the Sam “The Man” Taylor Big Band, sat in the audience with Jimmy’s wife, Mary. “I guess he was going to protect her because everybody else in the audience was black,” he says, laughing. Cavallo vividly recalls filming his two scenes for Rock, Rock, Rock at a cavernous old church in the Bronx. “The place had great acoustics,” he said, “a natural reverb sound.” He and the band lip-synced to their recordings of the title tune, “Rock, Rock, Rock,” and “The Big Beat.” It took four takes to nail the title tune because Cavallo wasn’t comfortable lip-syncing. “The Big Beat” took fewer tries. “I remember (the movie’s teen idol co-star) Teddy Randazzo was there cutting up, writing the words to the songs on a blackboard while a bunch of extras danced in front of the band. It was fun. I found out that one of the dancers, a gal with a little ponytail, was Valerie Harper.” Then age 17, Harper would later gain television fame on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and her own spinoff, Rhoda.

09.09.15 - 09.15.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

Unfortunately, the movie’s title track rocked all right but failed to put a dent in the charts despite Freed’s dogged promotion. Unlike his friend Bobby Darin, who enjoyed a million-seller with “Splish Splash” in 1958, Cavallo never scored a big hit single. Cavallo also lacked a personal manager. “If you don’t have a personal manager to take that song, ‘Rock, Rock, Rock,’ and get it out there and get it to those disc jockeys and get it played, you’re never gonna get the hit record,” he says, sighing. Regardless, Freed hired the House Rockers again to appear in the 1959 movie Go, Johnny, Go, starring Jimmy Clanton and featuring Chuck Berry, Richie Valens, Eddie Cochran and The Cadillacs. The House Rockers weren’t even billed on the lobby card. But Cavallo’s brief brush with fame produced some memorable recordings. For instance, the House Rockers waxed the unforgettable “Fanny Brown,” an R’n’B hit previously recorded by Roy Brown and Wynonie Harris, at New York City’s Nola Studio. For Coral they cut 12 sides, including many originals. They toured with Fats Domino, played a summer-long engagement in Wildwood, N.J., played Las Vegas and from 1959 to 1965 made more records for the Sunnyside, Hand, Darcy and Romar labels. In 1961 Cavallo returned to Central New York as the emcee at Dominick Bruno’s Three Rivers Inn, north of Liverpool. Luongo was often there. “Jimmy and the band would warm up the crowd and then he’d introduce

the headliner, Tony Martin or the McGuire Sisters or whoever,” Luongo recalls. “The funny thing is that he was one of the stars himself.” Rock’n’roll was changing, and Cavallo listened to his wife, Mary, when she advised him to add some sweeter songs to his repertoire. “I was really just a blues shouter up until that time, but she said to me, ‘Jimmy, you have such a wonderful singing voice. How about singing a real good song, some softer stuff?’ So I worked up a version of Frankie Laine’s ‘Georgia (On My Mind).’ Yeah, Frankie did it even before Ray Charles.” After that Cavallo tackled material by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole, songs that he still includes in his shows today. In 1968, Jimmy and Mary moved to Pompano Beach, Fla., where they continue to reside. Even at age 88, Cavallo is in remarkably good health, occasionally fighting off allergies that can lead to laryngitis, which happened to affect him at last year’s edition of downtown Syracuse’s Festa Italiana, where he has been a fixture for two decades. “The music has really been a blessing to me,” Cavallo concludes. “I’m extremely happy to wake up every morning and know I’m going to go to work and make my audience happy. It’s a fact: Making you happy makes me happy.” SNT

Symphoria’s Lawrence Loh will also wield the baton as producing artistic director and principal conductor for Syracuse Opera’s upTAKE coming season, which includes Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied, Puccini’s La Boheme and Bernstein’s West Side Story at the Mulroy Civic Center. SYMPHORIA HIGH ON LOH

After completing their summer concert series at the end of July, Symphoria’s musicians took a deserved intermission. When they return to the stage this weekend, new music director Lawrence Loh will assume the podium to lead the orchestra into its third season. Symphoria is one of the only musician-governed orchestras in the United States. After the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra disbanded in the fall of 2011, 47 former members formed Symphoria, a smaller, more flexible organization, in 2012. Loh, 45, a former resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, was appointed the first-ever artistic director of Symphoria by the musicians and board of directors in 2014. Originally from California, the Yale graduate has conducted professional orchestras across the country, including the National Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony. Catherine Underhill, Symphoria’s managing director, said that everyone is excited to bring Loh on board. “We’re looking forward to the public getting to know him in different venues and genres,” she said. The search for an artistic director began during Symphoria’s first season. After Loh’s guest appearances with the orchestra in 2013, board members and musicians unanimously agreed that he was the man for the job, Underhill said. John Garland, a Symphoria musician, said that Loh is bringing a “great enthusiasm” to the new season. “Playing in an orchestra can feel like working on an assembly line, so Loh is the perfect fit,” Garland said. “We’re really thrilled to have him.” As a musician-owned and -governed organization, Symphoria is on the cutting edge of the business model for American orchestras. Underhill said that the relationship between the board of directors and the artistic director will be more collaborative than is the case with other U.S. orchestras. Loh said he is looking forward to working with the orchestra members. “The musicians have a very personal obvious stake in the organization’s success. And so do I,” he said. “We are all responsible for Symphoria. Every one of us.” This collaborative approach will extend further than just Symphoria. Loh said that he will be searching for ways to partner with other arts organizations in the city. “We all coexist, and we all have the same mission: trying to work to enrich lives through great art.” Linda Hartsock, director of the Connective Corridor, said that she is eager to work with Loh and Symphoria and looking for ways to “bring the corridor alive with music.” She said that bringing on Loh is a “bold move” that will help reinvigorate and reinvent Symphoria. “I think it’ll be exciting not just for Symphoria, but for Syracuse,” Hartsock said. “The word that’s used most often to describe him is electrifying.”

Loh said he will be exploring new ways to unite Symphoria with the public. He will be traveling with the musicians to different venues around the city to perform different kinds of concerts. Between the Masterworks, Pops, Casual and Kids concert series, Loh hopes to provide music to as many listeners as possible. Symphoria’s opening salvo on Saturday, Sept. 12, 7:30 p.m., will feature “Symphonie Fantastique,” with conductor Loh and pianists Christina and Michelle Naughton performing a Poulenc concerto. The event takes place at the Mulroy Civic Center’s Crouse-Hinds Concert Theatre, 411 Montgomery St.

Loh’s season highlights will also include an evening with cellist Julie Albers (Oct. 10), an afternoon with violinist Itzhak Perlman for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto (Nov. 1), pianist Orion Weiss performing Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” (Nov. 7), a Shakespeare salute (Feb. 27), a Pops night with music from Disney movies (March 19), Brahms’ Requiem (April 23), a Shostakovich symphony (May 14) and works from Ravel and Saint-Saens (June 4). FROM GRADUATION TO GALLERY

F

or a recent college graduate, receiving a diploma in the fine arts can make it difficult to map out a career. But there are some who know exactly what they want to do with their futures.

Just ask Allison Kirsch and Holly Wilson, two Syracuse University alumnae who graduated in May with bachelors of fine arts degrees in sculpture. Less than two months later, on July 1, the duo opened Gallery Apostrophe’ S, a new exhibit and creative space at 1100 Oak Ave. With an edgy, contemporary aesthetic in a throwback setting, Apostrophe’ S defiantly remains in the present. Experimental art is juxtaposed with the vintage building, which in a former life was a frame shop. A lot has happened in the time since the women first came across the old storefront. Following graduation, the pair nearly went their separate ways, with Kirsch set to return home to New Jersey and Wilson to Ohio. They threw around the idea of finding a studio space that they could also inhabit, but their search yielded no affordable results. By a stroke of chance (or fate), Wilson’s mother spotted a Craigslist posting in April for a space that could potentially serve as a home, studio and showcase floor all rolled into one. She convinced the two to speak with the landlords.

09.09.15 - 09.15.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

“We both had skills to run a gallery, but that had never been the game plan,” says Kirsch. “It just fell into our laps and we’re really excited it happened this way. It’s an amazing place to work.” Renovating the space wasn’t an easy task. After moving in as residents above the gallery in May, an exhausting, monthlong makeover was done entirely by Kirsch and Wilson in between working day jobs (which they still hold) to make ends meet. Shag carpet was torn up to reveal a wooden floor, and a false wall was installed to separate the gallery from the personal studio. The old ceiling tiles in the showroom were removed as they began to refurbish the original tin ceiling, a process which is ongoing. By the end of June, the 22-year-olds were poised to open the doors of their new space as co-directors with a mission: to bring innovative art and events to the North Side. Even after the renovations, the retro charm of the frame shop remains intact. On the front windowsill looking out onto Oak Avenue, porcelain antiques are nestled in the company of abstract sculptures, paying homage to the space’s past and future. Wilson has a

penchant for nostalgic knick-knacks, frequently perusing flea markets and estate sales in her spare time. Wilson’s classic touch was felt in her initial video and installation exhibit that exploded across nearly half of Apostrophe’ S ground plan. Wilson’s untitled art piece included eviscerated mattresses and refrigerators (splattered with neon blues and pinks) strewn about as domestic appliances and items from the 1950s rested on top of them, while a black-and-white video showed the artist furiously cleaning a house and shaving her legs with a men’s razor that was made nearly 60 years ago. It served as a modern message about gender roles, among other topics, through an old-fashioned lens. Yet Apostrophe’ S will not solely revolve around the sculptors who founded the gallery. For instance, Brian Giniewski’s sculptural painting show Making Certain will run at the venue through Sunday, Sept. 13. Kirsch and Wilson plan to host other artists from inside and outside the city’s limits. There has also been early talks of connecting with their alma mater and establishing a young artist program with local elementary schools. “It’s a very versatile space,” says Kirsch, “and it’s able to change and adapt.” In the meantime, both avant-garde and traditional artists wishing to showcase their work can apply on the gallery’s website. Looking ahead, musical evenings from regional and national talent are in the works. The intimate nature of the gallery lends itself to all kinds of performances. With Apostrophe’ S, not only have these newly minted grads found their business, but also a place where Kirsch and Wilson’s love of installations and sculpture as creative mediums echo their ideas of what they can do with their new home, studio and show floor. “I want to transform the room so you’re not in a gallery,” says Wilson, “but entering into a whole other world.” SNT Andy Belt is a graduate student in the Goldring Arts Journalism program at Syracuse University.

A PRIMARY CHOICE FOR PETERSON

With two months to go until Election Day 2015, one race at the top of the ticket seems all but inevitable. Although Democrats have turned the corner in the numbers race, their Onondaga County executive candidate, Toby Shelley, lacks the organization and the cash to even dream of unseating incumbent Republican Joanie Mahoney. The primary on Thursday, Sept. 10, however, provides a sideshow worthy of Peter Sellers running against himself. It started with Mahoney stating publicly that she would not accept the Conservative Party nomination for the November ballot (usually an automatic alliance in state and local elections) and Shelley announcing his intention to take it. Then there were comments attributed to Shelley in the Syracuse New Times (see Ed Griffin-Nolan’s June 10 article, “Toby Shelley’s Conservative Context”), characterized as racial profiling, which reportedly angered Mahoney and motivated her to encourage Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest board chair Oscar Peterson to challenge Shelley for the Conservative nod. Peterson denies Mahoney had any role in launching his electoral effort, although maintaining that her Commissioner of Purchase Sean Carroll is his campaign

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Syracuse University announced that senior quarterback Terrel Hunt, who suffered a right Achilles tendon injury about seven minutes into SU’s season-opening win against Rhode Island on Sept. 4, would undergo surgery and miss the rest of the 2015 season. Last season, Hunt broke his left leg against Louisville and missed SU’s final seven games. Counting that Louisville contest, the Orange lost seven of eight games without Hunt and finished 3-9. “Tough deal, tough deal,” SU coach Scott Shafer said after the Orange had whitewashed undermanned Rhode Island 47-0. “Just keep your thoughts and prayers out there for him and his family. He’ll be OK; he’ll work through it. He’s got a bunch of brothers that love him and will take good care of him.”

18

manager. “He’s helping me out, anyway,” Peterson says. Carroll insists he is serving as legs for Peterson, who recently underwent a second leg amputation, helping him out while professing total support for Mahoney’s bid for re-election. “She’s not a Conservative,” Peterson observes of Mahoney’s tenure in office, of which many local political cognoscenti reflect “she might as well be a Democrat.” Mahoney has, however, cut it down the middle, shining as the Republican on the hill reducing the size of county government. “Technically, I’m the only (registered) Conservative running,” Peterson notes. “When I found out Toby Shelley was trying to get on the Conservative Party line as well as the Democrat and Working Families lines, I said to myself, ‘That’s just spreading yourself too thin. How can you be agreeing with all those at the same time?’ And he’s going to have to answer to Conservatives.” A dozen years ago Peterson came to town from Atlanta, where he didn’t have to register in a party to be politically active. “I picked up a copy of the Syracuse New Times,” he recalls, “and saw Stanley Dean, a person of color, was chair of the Republican City Committee. I had been a Republican for a while, mentally, and when I met him he encouraged me to get involved.” Peterson rose to a position of leadership on the city committee, constantly pushing to expand the party’s base among people of color, until he moved to a facility in Baldwinsville oriented to his health issues and challenges to his mobility. “They presumed that I could not represent the city properly,” he mused. Peterson says he felt pressure from Republicans when he tried to move from the party’s city to its state committee. “Conservatives have always been closer to my personal beliefs and values,” he says, “and when I went to my last (annual party fundraiser) clambake, I knew I just wasn’t going to be a Republican any more. I filled out a voter registration form and checked Conservative.” He says he will counter his limited mobility with social media. “And mailings to registered Conservatives explaining my not being able to get around to meet them, but how on my Facebook page I’m calling for the repeal of the Safe Act and the state court ruling on gay marriage.” SNT

True freshman Eric Dungey, who last year at this time was taking snaps as the starting quarterback at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, Ore., replaced Hunt and played well. He completed 10 of 17 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns to hybrid back Erv Phillips as he appeared to have a grasp on new offensive coordinator Tim Lester’s offense and make the right decisions with his reads. “It was all the other guys,” Dungey said. “I mean, they were all picking me up and keeping me calm. I really wasn’t expecting to go in that early. We’re so tight-knit, working hard. We’ve been here since July together building a relationship. We just want to win. We’re competitors.”

Dungey won the backup job late in training camp over redshirt sophomore Austin Wilson, who initially replaced Hunt last season before getting injured. While Dungey’s career is off to a nice start, he’ll get a stiffer test on Saturday, Sept. 12, in SU’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Wake Forest at 12:30 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. “Eric has got the skill set that can do every part of our offense,” Shafer said. “The only thing I will say is we didn’t get into some other things in our offense that we were anxious to. With the injury, we just said let’s keep it simple. We’ve got some other things to throw out there and I’m anxious to do that. Yes, he can run all those things and I’m looking forward to seeing him do it.”

F R E E W I L L A S T R O LO G Y

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) “More and more

I have come to admire resilience,” writes Jane Hirshfield in her poem “Optimism.” “Not the simple resistance of a pillow,” she adds, “whose foam returns over and over to the same shape, but the sinuous tenacity of a tree: finding the light newly blocked on one side, it turns in another.” You have not often had great access to this capacity in the past, Aries. Your specialty has been the fast and fiery style of adjustment. But for the foreseeable future, I’m betting you will be able to summon a supple staying power -- a dogged, determined, incremental kind of resilience.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) “The fragrance from your mango groves makes me wild with joy.” That’s one of the lyrics in the national anthem of Bangladesh. Here’s another: “Forever your skies . . . set my heart in tune as if it were a flute.” Elsewhere, addressing Bangladesh as if it were a goddess, the song proclaims, “Words from your lips are like nectar to my ears.” I suspect you may be awash with comparable feelings in the coming weeks, Taurus -- not toward your country, but rather for the creatures and experiences that rouse your delight and exultation. They are likely to provide even more of the sweet mojo than they usually do. It will be an excellent time to improvise your own hymns of praise. GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) There have been times in the past when your potential helpers disappeared just when you wanted more help than usual. In the coming weeks, I believe you will get redress for those sad interludes of yesteryear. A wealth of assistance and guidance will be available. Even people who have previously been less than reliable may offer a tweak or intervention that gives you a boost. Here’s a tip for how to ensure that you take full advantage of the possibilities: Ask clearly and gracefully for exactly what you need. CANCER. (June 21-July 22) Why grab the brain-scrambling moonshine when you may eventually be offered a heart-galvanizing tonic? Why gorge on hors d’oeuvres when a four-course feast will be available sooner than you imagine? According to my analysis of the astrological omens, my fellow Crab, the future will bring unexpected opportunities that are better and brighter than the current choices. This is one of those rare times when procrastination may be in your interest. LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) As I hike up San Pedro

Ridge, I’m mystified by the madrone trees. The leaves on the short, thin saplings are as big and bold as the leaves on the older, thicker, taller

by Rob Brezsny

trees. I see this curiosity as an apt metaphor for your current situation, Leo. In one sense, you are in the early stages of a new cycle of growth. In another sense, you are strong, ripe and fullfledged. For you, this is a winning combination: a robust balance of innocence and wisdom, of fresh aspiration and seasoned readiness.

VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) I hope it’s not too late or too early to give you a slew of birthday presents. You deserve to be inundated with treats, dispensations and appreciations. Here’s your first perk: You are hereby granted a license to break a taboo that is no longer useful or necessary. Second blessing: You are authorized to instigate a wildly constructive departure from tradition. Third boost: I predict that in the next six weeks, you will simultaneously claim new freedom and summon more discipline. Fourth delight: During the next three months, you will discover and uncork a new thrill. Fifth goodie: Between now and your birthday in 2016, you will develop a more relaxed relationship with perfectionism. LIBRA. (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) A “wheady mile” is

an obsolete English term I want to revive for use in this horoscope. It refers to what may happen at the end of a long journey, when that last stretch you’ve got to traverse seems to take forever. You’re so close to home; you’re imagining the comfort and rest that will soon be yours. But as you cross the “wheady mile,” you must navigate your way through one further plot twist or two. There’s a delay or complication that demands more effort just when you want to be finished with the story. Be strong, Libra. Keep the faith. The wheady mile will not, in fact, take forever. (Thanks to Mark Forsyth and his book Horologicon.)

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Trying improbable and unprecedented combinations is your specialty right now. You’re willing and able to gamble with blends and juxtapositions that no one else would think of, let alone propose. Bonus: Extra courage is available for you to call on as you proceed. In light of this gift, I suggest you brainstorm about all the unifications that might be possible for you to pull off. What conflicts would you love to defuse? What inequality or lopsidedness do you want to fix? Is there a misunderstanding you can heal or a disjunction you can harmonize? SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Is feeling

good really as fun as everyone seems to think? Is it really so wonderful to be in a groove, in love with life, and in touch with your deeper self? No! Definitely not! And I suspect that as you enter more fully into these altered states,

p.m., Sat. 8 p.m. Documentary about the famed music hall performer. Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn. $6. 253-6669.

Phoenix. Wed. Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m. Noir-style drama set in post-World War II Berlin, which continues the digital presentations at the Cinema Capitol, 234 W. Dominick St., Rome. $7/ adults, $5/students. 337-6453. your life will provide evidence of the inconveniences they bring. For example, some people might nag you for extra attention, and others may be jealous of your success. You could be pressured to take on more responsibilities. And you may be haunted by the worry that sooner or later, this grace period will pass. I’M JUST KIDDING, SAGITTARIUS! In truth, the minor problems precipitated by your blessings won’t cause any more anguish than a mosquito biting your butt while you’re in the throes of ecstatic love-making.

CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) In this horo-

scope, we will use the Socratic method to stimulate your excitement about projects that fate will favor in the next nine months. Here’s how it works: I ask the questions, and you brainstorm the answers. 1. Is there any part of your life where you are an amateur but would like to be a professional? 2. Are you hesitant to leave a comfort zone even though remaining there tends to inhibit your imagination? 3. Is your ability to fulfill your ambitions limited by any lack of training or deficiency in your education? 4. Is there any way that you are holding on to blissful ignorance at the expense of future possibilities? 5. What new license, credential, diploma or certification would be most useful to you?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) The story of my life features more than a few fiascos. For example, I got fired from my first job after two days. One of my girlfriends dumped me without any explanation and never spoke to me again. My record label fired me and my band after we made just one album. Years later, these indignities still carry a sting. But I confess that I am also grateful for them. They keep me humble. They serve as antidotes if I’m ever tempted to deride other people for their failures. They have helped me develop an abundance of compassion. I mention this personal tale in the hope that you, too, might find redemption and healing in your own memories of frustration. The time is right to capitalize on old losses. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) It’s never fun to be in a sticky predicament that seems to have no smart resolution. But the coming days could turn out to be an unexpectedly good time to be in such a predicament. Why? Because I expect that your exasperation will precipitate an emotional cleansing, releasing ingenious intuitions that had been buried under repressed anger and sadness. You may then find a key that enables you to reclaim at least some of your lost power. The predicament that once felt sour and intractable will mutate, providing you with an opportunity to deepen your connection with a valuable resource.
