A shoplifter made off with $150 worth of produce from a supermarket in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but surveillance video showed the thief wearing a Manchester United shirt with “Benson 22” printed on the back. Gregory Reddick, 54, said he’s suing New York City for arresting him after he charged two tourists $400 for a ride on the landmark Staten Island Ferry. The ferry has been free since 1997. We’re squarely in the middle of Oktoberfest (Sept 19-24), and I know what you’re thinking: Why are there no clever parodies of popular Oktoberfest drinking songs that celebrate Central New York?

Problem solved. Due to the importance of the topic, I actually did some research for a change, and I discovered that many of the most popular Oktoberfest songs originated not in Germany but in the United States, Great Britain and elsewhere.

PB&J’S BREAD LINES MAKE HEADLINES

ou might think the words “award winning” and “peanut butter and jelly sandwich” don’t belong in the same sentence. But you would be wrong.

Pat Orr, owner-operator of the Syracuse-based PB&J’s Lunch Box, won the Judge’s Choice Award for her signature grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich at the first (and hopefully annual) “Taste NY” Food Truck Competition at the New York State Fair on Sept. 6. Orr’s version of the humble American staple bested artisan pizza, meatballs, tacos, pulled pork sliders, chicken wings and other “street food” entries for the honor.

“I was surprised to win,’’ Orr says. “I thought if flavor was going to win I might stand a chance. I go by taste, not fanciness.’’

The contest was held on a sweltering Sunday. On the PB&J’s Facebook page, Orr expressed gratitude to her helpers (food truck operators served $2 samples to fairgoers all day), to State Fair officials for spotlighting the diversity of mobile food vendors across the state and to the judges “for giving a simple sandwich a shot at being a winner.’’

For the State Fair competition, Orr added toasted, chopped pecans to her sandwich for a bit of crunch.

Usually, she sticks with the tried-and-true formula we know and love: peanut butter and grape jelly on store-bought bread that she describes as a cross between Italian and French bread. The bread is buttered and the sandwich is grilled until golden brown —

and slightly oozy — and cut on the diagonal.

Customers sometimes ask her for substitutions and add-ins, like grilled peanut butter and bacon, grilled peanut butter and bananas and grilled peanut butter and Nutella. She’s happy to oblige, as long as she has the ingredients. “I usually have Nutella on the truck,’’ Orr says.

This is Orr’s fourth season in operation. Orr, a professional photographer for more than 30 years, says she decided to get into the food truck business after watching technology take off and demand for professional photographers begin to dwindle. So she asked herself: What else do I do well? “I’ve always loved to cook,’’ Orr says.

She used to set up her cart on weekdays in downtown Syracuse’s Armory Square, in front of the Milton J. Rubinstein Museum of Science and Technology (MOST). She didn’t like the “lottery system’’ for downtown street vendor spots and says the fees for the licenses and permits that are necessary for vendors to operate are excessive for what is a largely seasonal business.

Instead, she has been setting up at a variety of sites, such as St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and Costco in Fairmount, while construction was in progress.

Orr has also taken part in the local food truck round-

ups that have sprung up this year. She’s joining the Chicken Bandit, the STIR Mobile Eatery, Toss ’n’ Fire Wood-Fired Pizza and others each Wednesday at the new food truck rodeo at Lyncourt Plaza, at Teall Avenue and Court Street.

“Food trucks are like a novelty,’’ Orr says. “People like following you wherever you go.’’

Orr says her State Fair win has brought her some new gigs. She was invited to set up for the Sept. 12 National Drive Electric Week event at the MOST and for the Sept. 13 City Market in Armory Square.

Publicity and good word-of-mouth have also brought a steady stream of customers wanting to try her award-winning sandwich.

“The amount of grilled peanut butter and jelly I’ve sold since the fair has been a bit crazy,’’ Orr says with a laugh.

Not in the mood for the childhood favorite? Orr’s menu also includes hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage, pepper and onion sandwiches (made with Basilio-Buda Italian sausage, from Canastota), grilled cheese sandwiches (plain and with special add-ons, like spinach and tomato), Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwiches and “American tacos’’ with chicken, bacon and ranch dressing.

With cooler weather coming, Orr is looking forward to offering items like homemade soups, chili, macaroni and cheese and goulash.

Ish Guitars offers another cool component to the downtown music scene. By Jessica Novak

J

esse Wilson’s passions are easily apparent walking into Ish Guitars, his Armory Square store at the corner of Walton and South Franklin streets. With guitars on the walls, the Porsche poster mounted in his office and the details of design connecting the two, it’s obvious that cool axes and autos rank highest on his hobby list. It was his love of both that also led to his business.

In 2009 Wilson was just a budding 16-year-old entrepreneur with enough ambition to sell his first car, a Porsche 944, so he could start an online instrument business. After calling up several instrument dealers to help with the endeavor, he lucked out with Spector, a bass guitar company adored by Wilson, a bass player since he was 11.

“I used money from buying and selling instruments to buy the car and then I sold it, made money on it, and the amount of money I sold the guitar for was about exactly how much I needed to do a dealership buy-in with Spector,” he explains.

“They (Spector) were crazy enough to work with me. I called a ton of people (dealers), and it’s funny because I have them all now, but I called them (Spector) and asked, ‘What’s it take to become a dealer?’ I wanted an online business in something. They told me what it was like, about the value of my car, so I sold that, put the money toward this and I got three basses and a guitar. Actually, I just found the crappy picture from my mom’s cell phone of these four things.”

Wilson’s business, which specializes in high-end guitars, basses and other instruments, quickly became a top seller. He attributes the online success to his clear pictures and detailed descriptions of the gear. However, many instrument companies refuse to participate with sellers that lack a storefront operation, so Wilson

looked for an outlet at the Destiny USA mall, where the rent was deemed too high.

When a friend noticed a rental space at 410 S. Franklin St., just feet away from the Sound Garden, “It was perfect,” Wilson recalls. He decided on the property in September 2014 and booked singer-drummer Joey Belladonna of Anthrax for his Dec. 19 grand opening. The only problem was Wilson didn’t actually get into the space until two weeks before the opening.

“We had 14 days to do everything,” he says.

“In a way, it was good. We didn’t have as much inventory as we do now, which was better because it was packed in here. Within a month we had (the downtown location of) Funk n’ Waffles, SubCat Studios, the Redhouse, Sound Garden and Ish Guitars all down here in Armory Square.

We have this little downtown music community.”

Ish Guitars quickly became known by visiting musicians. Mike Gordon, bassist of Phish, popped in when he played at Paper Mill Island last June. World-famous bassist Marcus Miller also made a stop when he was in town for his daughter’s Syracuse University graduation.

Autumn Nicholas, a touring singer-songwriter, also visited Ish when her Taylor guitar needed repairs. One of her guitars, adorned with her name painted on the face of the instrument, now hangs in the store’s soundproof room.

“It’s been so busy,” Wilson says. “I thought it would be people here and there, but the traffic has been amazing.”

Ish Guitars offers full-service maintenance, electronic work, hardware and modifications, fret work, custom work and repairs, plus lessons on guitar and bass. Wilson plans to bring in music clinics, thanks to his relationships with the instrument dealers. He also hopes to shoot videos in the soundproof room, as well as expanding beyond the current gear of strings, amps and accessories (he says keyboards are next).

“I could also see more locations,” he says. “Small boutiques like this are needed in places like Albany and Binghamton.

When you go to Rochester, there are so many great music stores. There aren’t that many here.”

While Wilson is quick to name other successful music stores in the area, he also notes the closures of other shops such as Gerber Music and Daddy’s Junky Music Store. He doesn’t think the trend is due to Internet sales although he hopes to continue maintaining his storefront with his online business.

Additionally, Wilson has already started an accessory line for instrument cases. “It took three years to come up with this,” he says, pointing to the black and red soft case leaning against the wall. “I was tired of seeing cases made in China. This is all American, made in Rochester by a military manufacturing company.”

The case also speaks to Wilson’s car addiction. The case’s piping, webbing and red finishes against sleek black with seatbelts for straps lend a 1950s-retro feel.

Wilson also sells guitar straps, picks, T-shirts, hats and more small accessories. “Musicians have a look,” he says. “They’ve got the cool clothes, cool shoes, cool hair. Why shouldn’t they have cool everything? Dunlop and Planet Waves, the big dealers in that area, I want to take them on.”

His fashion style at the store mixes efficiency and attitude.

Wilson even took part during the Sept. 17 Syracuse Style Fashion Show, as models for Ish sported cases, guitars and clothes.

Wilson is thrilled to be a component of the downtown music scene, with hopes that the neighboring venues, studios and stores will work together on projects to showcase Syracuse’s live music scene. As for himself, “I want to take over the world,” he says with a smile, “like Pinky and The Brain.” SNT Ish Guitars, 410 S. T

he Syracuse Cinephile Society began on a whim. Unhappy with the late1960s film scene, friends Phil Serling and Sam Goldsman hatched a plan, which included renting the back room of a restaurant connected to the Regent Theatre on East Genesee Street so they could screen nostalgic pictures for a small following.

Even though Serling and Goldsman barely knew how to run a 16mm film projector during the early meetings, the crowds grew and so did the frequency of the events and sizes of the venues. When Serling became president of the Syracuse Cinephile Society, as the group was eventually named, his goal was to preserve, commemorate, and enjoy some of the greatest movies from yesteryear. Despite Serling’s death in 2002, the film fanatics still continue his mission and legacy.

For more than a decade, Gerry Orlando has been the Cinephile president. Before leading the group he was a longtime member, regularly attending events since the 1970s.

This fall, he’s eager to continue the long-running movie series on Monday nights, which has been a Cinephile staple since its inception. For the past seven years, the 7:30 p.m. screenings have taken place at the Spaghetti Warehouse, 680 N. Clinton St. This year’s season, which began Sept. 21 with a showing of The Egg and I, will conclude on Dec. 7. Even in an era of overblown blockbusters filling megaplexes, there are those who still take time out for the classics. This is evidenced in the Cinephile membership, which currently boasts 100 movie buffs.

A typical Monday evening program will lure around 70 moviegoers of a wide demographic to take in the oldies.

For most viewers, these flicks will be seen in a completely new light. Last spring the society switched from 16mm prints to a digital format after it became harder to track down quality films for its projectors.

The group now uses a presentation projector and licenses digitally restored titles from distributors Swank and Criterion, which allows it to purchase the rights from major studios such as MGM, Universal and Paramount. “Getting access to the studios’ back catalog has been huge for us,” Orlando says. “These are the best possible versions of these classics.”

Whether one’s taste leans toward comedies, dramas

or Westerns, the Monday-night showcase offers them all.

Orlando is particularly excited about the 1943 Warner Brothers musical This Is The Army, which has received a Hollywood makeover; now it has no scratch lines and its Technicolor has been restored. “That one was in especially bad shape,” Orlando says about the public-domain perennial, “but now it looks like new.”

Once the fall’s Monday-night program comes to a close in December, there will be a brief winter hiatus before the screenings return in late March. As the society approaches its 50th anniversary in 2017, and with packed houses every week at the Spaghetti Warehouse, there’s no sign of slowing down. “There’s definitely still an interest in classic film,” says Orlando.

“You can see that every Monday night.”

October features begin with the 1947 Betty Grable musical Mother Wore Tights and the 1929 George Burns-Gracie Allen short subject Lambchops on Oct. 5, followed by Jimmy Cagney’s fast-paced 1933 vehicle Picture Snatcher (Oct. 12).

Bob Hope and Bing Crosby team for the first time for the 1940 comedy Road to Singapore (Oct. 19). And the annual Halloween-themed event pairs The Mummy’s Hand (1940) with 1934’s Boris Karloff-Bela Lugosi scare package The Black Cat (Oct. 26).

November hits include Joan Crawford and Spencer Tracy in 1937’s Mannequin (Nov. 2); This Is The Army (Nov. 9); a Western double feature with William Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy in 1943’s Hoppy Serves A Writ and John Wayne in the 1938 programmer Santa Fe Stampede (Nov. 16); Abbott and Costello in 1943’s Hit The Ice (Nov. 23); and Kirk Douglas in director William Wyler’s 1951 drama Detective Story (Nov. 30). The season ends Dec. 7 with the 1951 musical On Moonlight Bay, which pairs Doris Day and Gordon MacRae. A new auteur will guide this year’s Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) awards ceremony.

It is Liam Fitzpatrick, the 24-year-old firebrand performer who has already amassed a list of impressive credits, including Les Miserables at Baldwinsville Theater Guild, Catch Me If You Can and The Wild Party for Dustin Czarny’s Central New York Playhouse, and The Normal Heart for Dan Tursi’s Rarely Done Productions. Out is ex-SALT leader Ty Marshal, the former director of digital media at the Syracuse New Times, who is now executive director at Homer’s Center for the Arts.

BIG FISH HOOKS AUDIENCES

We’ve all heard about the big one that got away. But when Edward Bloom (Tom Warner), the father at the center of Big Fish, tells his over-the-top tall tale, he claims all he has to do is wake up the fish by doing the Alabama Stomp, and they jump right into his pail! The delightful musical version is the season opener, playing through Oct. 3 at the Redhouse Arts Center, 201 S. West St. Ed’s young son Will (Lambros Alamond) listens to his dad’s wildly imaginative fabrications with slightly skeptical amusement. But when Ed insists upon taking center stage at the wedding party of the now-grown Will (Galen Sato), the son understandably has had enough.

“Why do you have to make everything about YOU?” he complains. Only when his father is on his deathbed does Will come to understand the truly heroic accomplishment that his usually boastful father has kept secret.

Sounds gushy, for sure, and a few hankies from audience members are bound to be pulled out toward the end. Yet the show is saved from sentimentality by quirky inventiveness, the engaging music and lyrics of Andrew Lippa, and the first-rate production directed by Redhouse artistic director Stephen Svoboda.

With a creative team that includes set designer Andrea Ball, lighting designer Gregory Griffin, sound designer Anthony Vadala and costume designer Katharine Tarkulich, Svoboda leads theatergoers to suspend their disbelief and enter the

Technicolor world of Edward Bloom’s wild adventures. All the elements work together to create the illusion of a scary threat when the little town of Ashton is menaced by a giant named Karl (John Bixler on stilts). The large chorus of terrified townspeople (Svoboda makes good use of talent nurtured through the Redhouse training program) backs away in slow motion as the disheveled giant, his synthesized voice hugely amplified, confronts the unintimidated Edward, who quickly makes a friend of him.

Hang a few cloth swag, and the scene switches to the circus of Amos Calloway (Max Anderson), who is auditioning three young girls in their routine as “Little Lambs from Alabama.” Calloway shoos them home, suspecting their daddy might be a “sheriff with unmedicated rage issues,” but not before Edward falls irrevocably in love with Sandra (Lilli Komurek).

The story line of Big Fish unfolds mostly through its music, under the able direction of Patrick Burns, and its dance, choreographed by Erin Lafferty. OK, we don’t get the huge, slick production numbers of the Broadway version that can be glimpsed on YouTube, but these might only swamp the personal warmth of the relationship that develops between Edward, Sandra, Will and his gentle wife, Josephine (Carmen Viviano-Crafts). Big Fish’s opening weekend performances were sold out, as the rest of the run deserves to be. SNT

Fitzpatrick promises a fast-moving ceremony with an accent on inclusiveness, including more onstage performances of the SALT-nominated musicals from local companies, which should culminate in an event that will be “bigger, better and more fabulous.” Co-hostess with the mostest Rita Worlock returns for a second SALT show, accompanied this year by local music director Abel Searor.

Fitzpatrick is also on the hunt for new members to join the SALT Academy, which annually nominates performers and productions after seeing more than two dozen shows throughout the year.

“I’m really trying to bring the SALT Awards back to a celebration of community theater and the incredible group of people we have in town that (the awards were about) at its inception,” notes Fitzpatrick. “It’s kind of gotten away from that and I really just want to bring it back to have a moment to say, ‘Look at what we did this year; look at what we’ve always done; look at what we can do. This is fabulous.’ Rather than, ‘Oh, they won and they won, and I didn’t win.’

“We have an embarrassment of incredible theater in town,” Fitzpatrick says. “For a city this size, it actually doesn’t make sense, but there is so much to do and see, and we really want to get back to celebrating that.

So that’s my vision and take on the SALT Awards.” SNT
