Good fortune quickly turned to horror for a man in Allyn, Wash., who scored some raccoon roadkill to use as crab-trap bait on June 25. As the unidentified man walked toward home dragging the carcass behind him on a 15-foot rope (so he couldn’t smell it), two different vehicles stopped, and their occupants, mistakenly thinking he was dragging a dead dog, began berating the would-be fisherman. As the dispute heated up, someone produced a gun, shooting the man twice in the leg before he was struck by one of the vehicles as the assailants fled.

Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

A brigade from the Sawang Boribun Fire Rescue Center in Pattaya, Thailand, was called to a local hospital on June 24 when doctors needed help extricating a patient from two metal rings stuck on his penis. The patient, 33, who gave his name as Wirat, first said he didn’t know how the rings had gotten there, but later admitted that he had been “experimenting” with them. When doctors couldn’t

dislodge the sex toys, they turned to firefighters, who worked for 30 minutes using pliers and cutting tools to remove the rings.

A couple in Scotland have resorted to offering 50,000 pounds ($57,000) for a live-in nanny to care for their two young children after five previous nannies have quit in the last year citing “supernatural incidents.” The homeowners describe the property as “lovely, spacious, with spectacular views,” but admit they were told the house was haunted before they bought it. Richard Conway, CEO of Childcare. co.uk, the website where the job is offered, said: “The family has assured us that no harm has come to anyone living in the house, however the nanny will have to have a strong disposition.”

Odd Hobbies

The Wall Street Journal reported in June on a small group of enthusiasts who participate in the esoteric sport of container spotting — discovering and documenting unusual shipping containers. Spotting

a distinctive box “is analogous to the satisfaction that bird-watchers get from spotting a very rare breed of bird,” noted Matt Hannes, who maintains the Intermodal Container Web Page. Unusual boxes, known as unicorns, include those with outdated names or logos, or sporting discontinued colors, and those from very small shipping companies. Charles Fox of Indianapolis may be an extreme hobbyist: On his honeymoon, he spent two 12-hour days taking photos of a variety of boxes in Belgium. Mrs. Fox was not amused.

A serial underwear thief in Tokyo was finally snagged July 4 when he was caught on surveillance video stealing nine women’s undergarments that had been hung out to dry. Yasushi Kobayashi, 61, told police that he’d been lifting lingerie for 20 years because he enjoys wearing them. Police found more than 1,000 pieces during a search of his home.

LOCAL MEDIA WATCHDOGS LEASHED IN ALBANY

Have you heard that there might be a New York constitutional convention in two years? There’s a good chance you haven’t. That’s because a new Siena College poll released at the beginning of September found that 58 percent of New Yorkers have heard “nothing at all” about the possibility of a constitutional convention. As disappointing as that sounds, it is actually quite an improvement — down from 67 percent in July. The decision to hold a convention in 2019 will be put to the voters this November, as it has every 20 years in New York. The last time such a convention took place was in 1967. That means if voters approve the convention proposition on Nov. 7, it would be the first time in 50 years this state would have the opportunity to do some serious fine tuning of a document that details all of our fundamental rights as citizens of New York, a document that is so complex it actually has seven times more words in it than the U.S. Constitution. One might think that sounds like a big deal. You’re damn right it is. At the very least, it should not be something 58 percent of the population knows nothing about, less than two months before the proposition appears on their ballot. The reason for such silence is a frightening trend both here and across the country. The media, particularly local media, aren’t covering New York state government as adequately. I started my real-world journalism experience with a 2014 internship in Albany at The Legislative Gazette, an entire publication dedicated to reporting on New York politics. Upon my arrival, I was dumbfounded at the amount of news coming out of the state capital that even an enormous political news consumer and enthusiast like myself had never even heard about. I was even more dumbfounded, now

that I was on the inside looking out, when I noticed local news outlets from all over the state only briefly mention — or fail to mention at all — many stories from Albany that we had considered frontand-center. Legalization of medical marijuana, establishing a $15 minimum wage plan, a statewide ban on hydrofracking and the opening of several new casinos were all stories that affected all areas of the state. They were all reported on when those events initially occurred, but all of them had major developments, angles, questions and concerns along the way that were heavily newsworthy that often weren’t reported on. Indeed, some of those stories are still being told, so their newsworthiness certainly still applies. The problem is that newsrooms in all mediums have been forced to significantly cut back their resources attached to reporting from state capitals. The same summer I spent at The Legislative Gazette, Pew

Research Center released a report filled with incredible findings about those who cover state government. The study found that the number of full-time statehouse newspaper reporters nationwide declined by 35 percent between 2003 and 2014. As of 2014, the number of journalists responsible for keeping tabs on their state politicians, scouring over state legislation and attending hearings and press conferences in all 50 states, is 164. In Albany, Politico New York, which runs entirely online, had the largest reporting staff at the state capital at the time the study was released. With its five employees, it beat The New York Times and Albany Times Union, which both had three.

Local newspapers have been able to rely on wire services like the Associated Press for some coverage. But AP has suffered cutbacks of its own, and wire stories can’t take state government and tailor it to specific community interests on a fulltime basis like newspapers’ individual reporters can. While the decline in state reporters seems to mirror the trend of newspaper staffs in general, other mediums certainly aren’t picking up the slack. As of 2014, 86 percent of the nation’s 918 local TV news stations do not assign even one reporter — full time or part time — to the statehouse. And radio journalists make up about 9 percent of full-time statehouse reporters. What we’re doing is further isolating ourselves from what happens in Albany. And with a city known for conducting its legislative business behind closed doors, the last thing we need to do is to place it in a box. Continuing to do so will erode the two core principles for which the free press was created. One: Holding the newsmakers accountable. It’s hard to do that when there’s little or no news about the newsmakers. And unfortunately, the holes left by fewer journalists in state capitals aren’t being filled the way we want them to be. More and more newsmakers are figuring out how to, well, make news. Many are now able to send out their messages via the internet and social media, sometimes even create their own news agency, all conveniently without any vetting from journalists. Since Albany has been referred to as a “cauldron of corruption,” that’s not something we need to become common in New York. Two: Inform the general electorate. State government is certainly not the sexiest thing in the world, and it will not get the most clicks, but it considerably affects our daily lives and livelihood. So we need to know just what is being affected and who is doing the affecting. That’s why it’s so alarming that 58 percent of us haven’t heard about the possibility of a New York constitutional convention — because that is something that would positively affect 100 percent of us. If something that momentous in our state government isn’t being reported on enough, then what is? SNT

PAUL MCCARTNEY AT THE DOME: YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!

When he was 16, Paul McCartney wrote a song about aging in the style of his father’s jazz band. “When I’m Sixty-Four” later appeared on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album and it’s filled with geriatric images of losing his hair, digging the weeds and bouncing grandchildren on his knee. There was no mention in the song of turning 75 and screaming through a blistering “Helter Skelter,” making eyes water with a heartfelt tribute to John Lennon, or nearly burning the Carrier Dome down with the pyrotechnics from “Live And Let Die.” But Sir Paul did all that and much more Sept. 23, about three months after his 75th birthday. For those Central New Yorkers who had tickets to McCartney’s cancelled 1993 show at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome, the Sept. 23 concert was worth the 24year wait. And for fans of The Beatles and Wings who had never seen McCartney perform live, it was the thrill of a lifetime. McCartney’s three-hour show before a sold-out crowd of about 35,000 featured 39 songs and numerous stories and one-liners. The Dome was electric: Imagine the roar from John Gillon’s buzzer-beater against Duke last February and multiply by 39. Speaking of Syracuse basketball, McCartney said he was familiar with the Dome from “watching a lot of basketball matches (sic) in this place.” Orange coach Jim Boeheim — the second most famous person at the Dome Sept. 23 — tweeted, “McCartney Magic in our Dome! He can play on Boeheim court whenever he wants.” Those Dome renovations that are in the works nearly happened a lot sooner as fireworks during “Live And Let Die” reached a catwalk above the stage and started a small fire. But as McCartney played the next song, “Hey Jude,” a Dome worker or concert roadie climbed to the top to extinguish the fire before the final “Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.”

With McCartney’s 55 years of hit songs with The Beatles, Wings and as a solo artist, it was a slam dunk that he would entertain the crowd. But McCartney dropped jaws at the muggy Dome with his energy, stamina and his wondrous talent as he deftly maneuvered from one instrument to the next, playing a dead-on electric guitar solo on “Foxy Lady” (following “Let Me Roll It”) to a rollicking piano on “Lady Madonna” to his legendary Hofner bass on a swinging “Back In The USSR.” And through it all, McCartney did not take one sip of water on stage. This writer will speak for himself, but I’ll be happy if I can go three hours without having to go to the bathroom if I get to 75. The magic of a McCartney concert lies in the range and variety of his music. One minute, you feel like he’s playing “Blackbird” just for you in his living room; the next minute you’re singing “Hey Jude” along with 35,000 of your closest friends. Forever the cute Beatle, Paul truly appears to be having as much fun as you. Some examples: When talking about the signs in the crowd and how he can’t help but read them even though he’s trying to remember the words and chords to the song he’s playing, McCartney read a few from the crowd, including one that said, “Sign My Butt.” “Well,” McCartney said with a smile, “Let’s have a look at it then.” When talking about the first record The Quarrymen ever made, McCartney said they each paid one English pound and the deal was that Paul, John, George Harrison, Colin Hanton and John “Duff” Lowe would each hold it for one week. “John had it for a week and gave it to me, I gave it to George, George gave it to Colin and Colin gave it Duff — and Duff had it for 20 years,” McCartney said. During the guitar solo in “And I Love Her,” McCartney turned around and playfully wiggled his butt as the crowd laughed and cheered. Throughout the show, McCartney played tributes to his first wife, Linda (“Maybe I’m Amazed”), his current wife, Nancy (“My Valentine”), Beatles producer George Martin (“Love Me Do”), George Harrison (“Something” that he started on a ukulele that George gave to Paul), and Lennon (“Here Today”). “Here Today” was recorded after Lennon was murdered and it’s written in the form of a conversation that they never had a chance to have. McCartney told the audience that they shouldn’t wait if they want to say something nice to someone. “If you want it said,” McCartney said, “get it said.”

McCartney also honored Lennon by playing a song he has done only occasionally on this “One On One” tour, “A Day In The Life.” He turned it into a medley with “Give Peace A Chance,” and you’d like to think that somewhere John was smiling as the crowd sang along and waved peace signs. From that point, McCartney and his band — Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums) — closed the show with several classics that kept the crowd on its feet: “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da,” “Band On The Run,” “Back In The USSR,” “Let It Be,” “Live And Let Die” and “Hey Jude.” The encore started with “Yesterday,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)” and “Helter Skelter.” McCartney usually pulls a fan or two on stage during the encore, and at that point he

invited an 18-year-old girl named Jessie to join him on stage. Jessie was holding a sign that read, “Just Turned 18 If You Know What I Mean,” and McCartney laughed and said, “Yeah, I know what you mean.” Jessie explained that she had recently spent some time in the hospital and was inspired by a framed picture of McCartney pointing at her that she had taken at a concert a few years ago. “You were the reason I got out of bed every day,” she said. McCartney gave her a big hug and signed her arm before launching into “Birthday” and then closing with the “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End” from the Abbey Road medley. With that, McCartney ended the show with one of the most famous lines in rock history. And at 75 and counting, McCartney is living proof that the love you take truly is equal to the love you make. By Jessica Novak Bea. Old Habits (Battlescarlet Records). From the first moments of Old Habits, it’s apparent where Bea’s going to take you. Bringing listeners back to an era of Jewel and Lisa Loeb, she talks openly in her songs about everything she sees, hears and feels, letting the audience so intimately into her world. Production is clean and poppy, with the vocals always prominent above instrumentation, including guitar, drums, percussion, bass and keys, with touches of electric guitar, additional strings, mandolin and pedal steel. Songs like “I Want That” are easy to sing along with, while the lilting “Fast and Crazy” boasts an endearing vulnerability. With a sweet, high voice and long black hair that coats her back, Bea seems unassuming. Yet don’t underestimate her. Just because her voice is sugary, it doesn’t make the lyrics candycoated when she’s whispering, “Does it make you feel like a big man to wrap an anchor around my chest to drag me down?” in “Heart to Eye.” Or when she’s being brutally honest in “Lines”: “I’m waiting to slide by your daily routine that I saw through my telescope eyes/ obsessed a bit much, maybe a little too much/ part time manic, but not the suicide kind.” It’s her bravery and openness that welcomes thoughts of other singer-songwriters (think Fiona Apple)

who laid it all out seemingly without fear of careful ears. The album is extremely consistent in sound, until the title track comes around late on the disc. The Wurlitzer and vibes add an exciting texture that makes the song really stand out. Likewise, “Sway” places a string arrangement front and center, giving the tune an instantly romantic touch, although the lyrics twist that first impression. ARTRAGE SHOW SALUTES WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE

During its 10-year history, the ArtRage gallery has seldom hosted sweeping group exhibits. Thus, its current show, Seen and Heard: Embracing Our Past, Empowering Our Future, is an outlier. It has a roster of 17 women artists, displays multiple media, and encompasses themes ranging from life stages to reproductive rights, from killings of women by intimate partners to ways of communicating personal experiences. The exhibition both celebrates the gallery’s 10th anniversary and commemorates the 100th anniversary of New York state signing women’s suffrage into law. There are works delving into topics that are all too familiar. In her ceramic piece, “Paper Trail Hate,” Mary Stanley combines bird-like creatures with representations of books such as Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf and Madison Grant’s The Passing of a Great Race, a 1916 text that served as a guide for the eugenics movement. At the same time, there are references to publications such as The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which first appeared in 1948. The work contrasts messages of hatred and tolerance and asks viewers to consider what’s going on in the world today. Across the gallery, Joyce Day Homan’s “This Month” blends images of handguns and other weapons, women weeping, and text noting that each month roughly 46 women are murdered by current or former intimate partners. It’s a powerful work. Seen and Heard presents a variety of other artworks, including Lisa Brasier’s images depicting two women in different stages of life. “Exit Stage Life” portrays a woman in her 20s attending a wedding reception, while “Beauty and the Lake” shows a silver-haired elder climbing up stairs after a swim in a lake. Elsewhere, Gail Hoffman’s bronze sculpture again demonstrates her ability to communicate with miniature figures. In “We’re Still Here,” three girls look at a woman’s head positioned on a

ladder that’s rising out of an abandoned building. The work is both concrete and out of time. Mary Giehl’s “Adopt Me,” takes place on a shelf holding dolls without specific facial features. Just below them, children’s clothing hangs on hooks. Here Giehl is interpreting themes she’s incorporated into her art for more than 20 years: children’s vulnerability, their position in our society, the need to deal with abuse and neglect. Several pieces utilize video. For example, Christine Chin’s “Hunter-Gatherer: Gather and Disperse Quilt” reflects on child rearing in contemporary urban society. She’s made a quilt split up by tiny video portals. There’s video footage of lactation, baby-wearing and other behaviors. Lorena Molina created “Hit,” part of her Collective Trauma Series. It’s a gut-wrenching piece with video showing a woman being slapped again and again, and audio airing the repetitive sound of the slap’s smack. Candace Rhea’s “Rilly and Her Doll” presents a young, brown-skinned girl holding a doll with blond hair and long legs. The piece looks at dolls from decades ago as cultural representations of an imagined, narrow ideal and questions stereotypes in general. Such concerns aren’t merely anecdotal. Back in the 1940s, psychologists Kenneth Clark and Mamie Phipps Clark did research on the effects of stereotyped

dolls on African-American children and later testified in a case ultimately merged into Brown v. Board of Education. It was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court and had a profound impact on education in the United States. Emily Luther created two pieces, “Grief Receipt” and “Losing the Body.” The first work, a long series of intensely personal notes handwritten on paper, blends with the second, a video segment. They both discuss Luther’s own experiences and encourage dialogue on subjects such as childbirth, death, family and the female body. The exhibition also includes Anne Cofer’s “Pillow,” with its subverting of floral patterns as an exemplar of domestic life; Cherie Spara’s self-portrait; and Vanessa Johnson’s newest work, “What We Carry-the 53%,” constructed from cotton fabric, a mask, burnt log, cowrie shells, and gris-gris bags filled with soil from Ghana and the United States. It’s part of a series calling for greater inclusion of women of color in the feminist movement. These, and other artworks, help build a large exhibit with many connections: to the suffragettes, to the Seen and Heard exhibit on view at the Everson Museum of Art this summer, to current social movements. In order to explore those links, ArtRage has scheduled a series of presentations:

“Women Voted in New York Before Columbus,” a talk by Sally Roesch Wagner slated for Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.; a screening of Chisholm ’72: Unbought & Unbossed, a film about Shirley Chisholm’s groundbreaking 1972 presidential candidacy, on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.; and an artists’ talk on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. Seen and Heard: Embracing Our Past, Empowering Our Future will be on display through Oct. 21 at ArtRage, 505 Hawley Ave. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Fridays, 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (315) 218-5711. ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR FUN

yracuse Stage’s seasonal kickoff production of The Three Musketeers is so bursting with color and energy that you think it’s about to leap over the footlights and jump into your lap.

Well, it does. Before the rise of curtain a student actor is giving the familiar turn-off-your-cellphones speech, but in French, when a gaggle of noisy players in costume, later identified as The Mob, hurtle up the aisle and bound on the set to knock her down and shut her up. This is artistic director Robert Hupp’s first display of his hand, both in picking what we see and then directing it. Lots of fun, but so much to pay attention to. Hupp is giving us a fresh take on a familiar property. Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers (1844) is one of those rare books that keep being read without being assigned in class. Most of us can name the three guys in the title more easily than we can name the seven dwarfs, as we follow the ascent of country boy D’Artagnan (Travis Staton-Marrero) toward making it into the Musketeers. But Catherine Bush’s new adaptation favors a light touch. In an interview published in the program, Bush claims never to have looked at any other adaptation, which may be true. Ever since Richard Lester’s antic two-part film versions (1973 and 1974) with Michael York, however, audiences expect comedy to be mixed into the adventure. Bush complies. No five pages of the novel can deliver as many laughs as Bush’s script can in five minutes. She retains Milady de Winter (Nikki Coble) as one of the coolest, most gorgeous villainesses of literature, but deletes two acts of misogynist bravado from D’Artagnan.

Hupp prefers his spectacles to be light-footed. The script has 20 scene changes and 40 speaking roles of several social classes. These zip by in two hours and 15 minutes in the text Bush wrought from a 700-page episodic novel with a cast of thousands and endless twists and turns. Stanley A. Mayer’s massive set allows for rapid scene changes (here in Carmelite convent, there removed to London), and Marianne Custer’s costumes are designed to knock your eyes out. This being France, even the beggars are chic. Director Hupp deftly helps us keep all 40 discrete, and, candidly, colorblind casting is useful toward this end. Although the Musketeers themselves are cited in the title, they are not overly favored with lines. Hupp helps to define the amorous Aramis (Seth Andrew Bridges), the sensible Athos (Matthew Greer) and the earthy Porthos (Chaz Rose) through body set and nuance so that we feel we know them better than Bush’s words allow. King Louis XIII (John Long) signals that he is effete, lackadaisical and powerless in about 30 seconds. So we know that he has ceded power to authoritarian Cardinal Richelieu (Mitch Tebo), whose swagger carries a sneer from Hollywood legend Billy DeWolfe. The director recommends symmetrical movement. Local favorite Anthony Salatino has guided choreographic staging, obviously necessary when as many as 25 players may be crowding a scene. D.C. Wright has been imported from Illinois to stage the fight scenes, whether with fists or swords. Admittedly,

sometimes the chin heaves while the knuckles have not yet arrived, and we are never worried that actors will be injured in the name of similitude. Further, Travis Staton-Marrero turns out to be something of a gymnast and responds to some of the fisticuffs with backflips. Nonetheless, some of the fight choreography will unsettle audiences for being gender neutral. This is another way of saying that female players also get smacked in the kisser and knocked on their prats. On the evidence of this production, director Hupp will reshape a character to fit the qualities a performer brings to it. Take, for example, Claro Austria, who plays six roles, one of them Planchet, servant of de Reville (Jason Collins), the crusty Captain of the Musketeers. Austria, a graduate of the University of Washington, is of Asian heritage and a bit shorter than many men in the cast. When one bully refers to him as a “Pipsqueak,” Austria flies into high dudgeon and slashes his arms in a series of martial arts commands before dispatching the miscreant. This anachronistic break through the fourth wall goes over fabulously with the audience. One of director Hupp’s innovations may have no precedent at Syracuse Stage, and that is an original prerecorded score by Ryan Rumery. He brings sterling national credits and has already composed more than 200 Broadway, off-Broadway and regional theater productions, as well as independent films and HBO. The score is perfectly delivered here, sometimes in thunder, by sound designer Jonathan Herter, a personal friend. Rumery’s idiom is contemporary, with no chi-chi attempt to sound “French” or any echoes of earlier composers like Francois Couperin. No musicians are credited for the performance. Later in the season Hupp will direct the dark musical Next to Normal, where he may have different things to tell us. As he has chosen The Three Musketeers to go first we can settle for these messages. The production directly addresses the problem facing all regional theaters: How to draw in new audiences while not driving away the loyal but shrinking current audiences. Dumas may not be Balzac or Hugo, but this is still a classic. Production standards are so high you can take snobbish out-oftown visitors to see the show with pride. The Three Musketeers is accessible and subtler than we have let on, as well as irreverent. It is also irresistible. SNT

TRUTH When Brian Yerdon was 9 years old, he bought a $20 metal detector from Radio Shack. Yerdon, a Lyncourt native and current city resident, would take the device up to the Adirondacks when he vacationed with his family. “It was the thrill of not knowing what I would find,” he recalls, “like looking for the prize at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box.” Unable to find anything at a young age, Yerdon gave up the hobby, but he never forgot the excitement. Forty-three years later, that feeling finally got the best of him. In the winter of 2013, Yerdon began watching YouTube videos to learn how to properly become a metal detecting hobbyist. The following spring, he purchased the proper equipment and dove in, shovel first. Beginning in local parks, Yerdon hunted for anything he could find, knowing he wasn’t there to strike it rich. “For me, it’s about the hunt and the story,” he says. “I want to know what lies under our feet and the history behind it.” A recent dig occurred at his friend’s property in Manlius, a home located at what is considered one of the highest points in Onondaga County. Yerdon unearthed a 1790 Spanish coin and 28 buttons from the late 1700s and early 1800s. These finds left him to wonder what might have occurred on that land so many years ago. Yerdon has since upgraded his detector equipment. His new device, a Garrett AT-Pro, tells him exactly how deep to dig once he

hears the proper signal. The depth of an item can range from 1 to 10 inches, although the depth doesn’t determine the age. “Some modern coins might be several inches deep, while older coins are waiting at the surface,” he says. Yerdon explains that it all depends on the conditions: “As our weather shifts, so does the earth beneath us.” That’s the reason why Yerdon and other metal detector hobbyists can revisit sites and continue to find new treasures. A prepress manager for a local printing company, Yerdon typically goes out on evenings and weekends when time allows. He also takes care of his live-in mother-in-law, who suffers from dementia, calling his time away a chance to “de-stress.” Yerdon highlights his hunts and findings on his own YouTube channel, “Yerdigginit Metal Detecting,” which has more than 600 subscribers. In addition to his own social media pages, he also moderates Syracuse Metal Detectors, a Facebook group of 150-plus local residents who share in his passion. Del Breazeale, another local digger and member of the Syracuse Metal Detectors, is also trying to hunt down the past. “My goal is to find history and preserve it,” he says. “If we don’t save the items from the ground, they’ll simply rot away and never be seen.” Recently, a Syracuse University student with hearing loss used the Facebook page to recruit Breazeale to help her recover a lost hearing aid near campus, an item he found within three hours.

THE HOT SARDINES Masters of Vintage Jazz Other members use the page to share photographs of their discoveries or organize group digs. One popular location for local metal detectors is Thornden Park, where Yerdon recently uncovered a gold ring and a silver coin from 1877. “Thornden Park has been giving away relics for years,” he says. “It will never be hunted out.” Although hunters are quick to point out their successes, it’s important to know that most of the items are not worth keeping. “More than not, your dig will consist of trash from bottle caps to rusty nails,” Yerdon says. “But the time spent is worth it.” Of all the items Yerdon has found, he has never sold a thing, and he doesn’t intend to. He keeps his findings in display cases, while specific items are categorized into Mason jars consisting of cap gun parts, toy cars, bullets, silverware and more. Occasionally, Yerdon will find an item that he can trace to the rightful owner, such as a 1960 Hamilton High School ring that he is in the process of researching. He encourages anyone who wants to try their hand at metal detecting to know their town ordinances and learn the proper procedures before getting started. “It’s important to fill your hole 100 percent,” Yerdon cautions. “It should look like you were never there.”

His hope is that as his work becomes better known, he’ll be invited to new locations by home owners. To see what relics my property was hiding, I invited Brian Yerdon to my house in Eastwood to search my yard. To my surprise, his dig consisted of dozens and dozens of wheat pennies, a harmonica reed, three rings, a pin and several Syracuse Transportation bus tokens. From now on, I’ll be following along to see what else Yerdon and the Syracuse Metal Detectors unearth. I might just join the effort.
