STARTING POINT I was looking at changes in The Post-Standard that Steven Cvengros, vice president of content, announced in a note to readers. One I liked was a standalone picture, called The Buzz, that shows off the work of the photo staff. I liked the idea even better nine months ago, when the New Times introduced a standalone picture to show off the work of Michael Davis. We called it … Buzz. Hmmmm. Maybe creativity is in short supply downtown. Maybe we, out on the West Side, should pretend we believe that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But, really? If there’s one thing true about newspaper design, it’s that we all copy — well, steal — the best ideas from other newspapers and magazines. We did it ourselves when we redesigned in April. But there are some rules. For example, you’re unlikely to find something called “Talk of the Town,” which Cover design by has become so identified Meaghan Arbital with The New Yorker. And it’s generally considered bad form to “borrow” from another publication in the same market. Hey, it’s not like there are Anti-Aping Police, and we have no special claim on “Buzz.” (Note to self: Perhaps it’s time to remind the Post that we do have exclusive rights to “Best of Syracuse.”) In the end, we hope the changes that What’s buzzing lie ahead for the Post won’t include a the most. snarky news summary called “Ripped from the Headlines,” or a news aggregation at Syracuse.com called “News & Blues,” or a food feature called “Plates & Glasses” or a real estate feature called “Living Space.” Follow us But fair warning: We will not be @syracusenew so accepting of a regular note to times.com readers from Post editors with a conversational tone and aspirations to be witty. Particularly if it’s called “Starting Point.” We have to draw the line somewhere. In that case, Stephen Cvengros, it’s Write to us at your choice of weapons at 20 paces. editorial@ And you can bet that would create syracusenew some buzz. times.com or 1415 W. Great job, Syracuse New Times! I am a French speaking Belgian living in Syracuse. I never endorsed or bought Charlie Hebdo before but now I do. Why?! For the reasons you state so well in your article: intimidation is not the right reason for which we choose what is right or what is wrong. We choose because of the truth and a personal conscience. Saying: “They deserved the way they were treated!” is the same as saying: “the abused wife or the abused child deserved to have been battered to death! They should not have provoked their spouse or father...” That kind of violence is NEVER acceptable or justifiable! — Veronique Bennett

Police charged Kahlif Aleem Buggs, 32, with fraudulent use of debit cards after Tamara Thomas noticed a family “shopping like it was Christmas” at a Family Dollar store in DeKalb, Ga., got behind them at the register and saw Buggs pay with her missing card, which she recognized because it had been customized with a picture of her, her daughter and their puppy. When she confronted Buggs, he forgot his $200 purchase and told his family to start running. Thomas followed, leading police to their location. Besides Thomas’ card, police found another missing debit card, which Buggs had used to buy $80 in merchandise. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

Fruits of Research Researchers linked the decline of marriage in the United States to the rise of free Internet pornography. One of the study’s authors, Michael Malcolm, a professor at Pennsylvania’s University of West Chester, explained that the reason is tied to the relationship between marriage and sexual gratification. If pornography is seen as an alternate means to sexual gratification, Malcom said, then it could be undercutting the need for marriage to serve this function. (The Washington Post)

Overcome by Technology A New Zealand couple spent nearly 13 hours trapped in their new “keyless” car in their garage. Brian and Mollieanne Smith had left the car’s instruction manual in their Alexandra home and the transponder outside the car when they realized that without the transponder, they couldn’t start the engine to unlock the power doors. They tried to attract attention by honking the horn and then tried smashing a window with a car jack. Neighbors found them the next morning with only enough air left to survive for less than an hour, emergency workers told Mollieanne Smith, 65, who was hospitalized for three days. After their rescue, Brian Smith, 68, learned that the door could have been unlocked manually. “Once I found out how simple it was to unlock it, I kicked myself that I did not find the way out,” he said. TOUGH TIMES AHEAD FOR THE ORANGE

L

et’s go back to the start of the Syracuse University men’s basketball season in mid-November. What if we had told you back then that …

• The Orange would lose four non-conference games for just the second time in coach Jim Boeheim’s 39-year career. • Junior center Dajuan Coleman would never fully recover from knee surgery and have to sit out the entire season. • Starting power forward Chris McCullough would be lost for the season after tearing his ACL in the game against Florida State Jan. 11. • And, two months into the season, Boeheim would still not trust freshman point guard Kaleb Joseph at the end of close games, and he would get little or no production from reserves B.J. Johnson and Chinonso Obokoh. You would have said the Orange is in big trouble. And you would be half right. Heading into Tuesday night’s Atlantic Coast Conference game against Boston College at the Carrier Dome, the Orange had so far overcome those obstacles to post a 13-5 overall record and 4-1 mark in the ACC. While a 66-63 victory over Iowa Nov. 21 in the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden remains SU’s best win, the Orange found a way to win close games against Louisiana Tech, Virginia Tech, Geor-

1.21.15 - 1.27.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

gia Tech and Wake Forest. But there remains a sky-is-falling feeling that this season could crumble at any time. After the Orange recorded what Boeheim called a “tremendous win” in overtime against Wake Forest Jan. 13, the team turned around and laid an egg in a 66-53 loss at Clemson Saturday, Jan. 17, that snapped SU’s seven-game winning streak. “It’s hard to get wins in this league,” Boeheim said after the Wake Forest game. “We’ve had two or three that could have easily gone the other way, and we got them. We have to keep plugging away and getting a little better. We’ll see what happens.” What we know is definitely going to happen is that the Orange schedule is going to get much more difficult very soon. After home games this week against Boston College (8-8, 0-4) and Miami (12-5, 2-2), the Orange will close its ACC season with a stretch of 11 games that includes two against No. 4 Duke and one each against No. 2 Virginia, No. 6 Louisville, No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 15 North Carolina, plus Pittsburgh twice and North Carolina State, which recently upset Duke.

And then there’s that NCAA hammer that’s hanging over SU’s head. In late October, the university released a statement announcing the conclusion of an NCAA investigation into probable violations by the athletic department. The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions was expected to announce its findings in a public report within 60 days, which means it’s about three weeks overdue. The investigation centered on men’s basketball violations that were reported by the university itself. Self-reporting usually counts for something, but the time span covered by the investigation (reportedly since the early 2000s) indicates that the basketball program could face “lack of institutional control” penalties. Then again, it’s the NCAA, and you never know what you’re going to get with an organization that makes up its rules as it goes along. In the meantime, the recommendation for SU fans that have been spoiled by the team’s recent success is to savor every victory this season, no matter how it’s accomplished, and keep your fingers crossed about the NCAA investigation. The Orange is about to become the underdog in many of its remaining games, so this season has become all about finding a way to survive. “Everyone is going to play and just work harder,” said SU center Rakeem Christmas, the team’s most valuable player. “We will all go out and play our game and we will be fine. Everyone is going to step up, and just go out and do what we do. We will do well.” SNT Matt Michael is a freelance writer based in Syracuse. Email him at matt42663@hotmail. com.

QUICK TAKE

“Black or white, gun or knife, the issue is the value of human life.” — From the poem “Human Life,” composed by Mark Muhammad after the killing of Trayvon Martin

By Ed Griffin-Nolan

ANONYMOUS CRITICS OF MARK MUHAMMAD ARE WRONG-HEADED Thirty-five years ago, when Mark Muhammad was a student at Henninger High School, the president of the Syracuse City School Board was a Roman Catholic priest. The Catholic Church at the time held views that could reasonably be described as antithetical to many of the norms of public education. The Church hierarchy professed separatist views regarding the role of women in society, objected to comprehensive sex education and lobbied regularly for public support for private, religious schools. None of this disqualified Rev. Charles Eckermann from serving on the school board. There was no public outcry about a man of the cloth serving on a secular board, no quotations from papal encyclicals, no dredging up the long and frightening history of the Vatican’s anti-Semitism. It was presumed that the widely known and respected monsignor had the best interests of students at heart and would do his job in a responsible manner — which by at least one measure, he did, since his peers on the board chose him to serve as their president. Eckermann, we learned much later, was accused of patronizing male prostitutes and sexually abusing altar boys. The diocese, and later the Vatican, found the sex abuse allegations credible, and Eckermann was defrocked. When Mayor Stephanie Miner last week appointed Mark Muhammad to fill out the last few months of Bill Bullen’s term on the school board, critics urged her to reconsider, largely because of Mark Muhammad’s affiliation with the Nation of Islam, led by Minister Louis Farrakhan. The teacher advocacy group Take Back Our Schools published an anonymous open letter to the mayor that acknowledged Mark Muhammad’s contributions as a teacher and community activist. But it argued that his “high rank” within the Nation of Islam made his selection inappropriate and compared him to white supremacists such as neo-Nazis and to the gay-hating Westboro Baptist Church.

The advocacy group, which has played a valuable role exposing violence suffered by teachers, is making a big mistake. We don’t know the names of the authors of the open letter, but we can only hope that they are not teaching history to our children. It would take far more space than I have here to explain the difference between the black self-reliance school of thought that Farrakhan preaches when he advocates for separate schools, and the white supremacist doctrine that legally enforced school segregation in the United States from 1898 through 1954. Mark Muhammad attended public schools. His children and his wife attended public schools. These schools are integrated. There is no discussion before the board of segregating the schools (middle-class families fleeing to the suburbs have done a pretty good job of that). There is no evidence that, regardless of his religious affiliation, he intends to pursue a separatist agenda. Mark Muhammad is a respected member of this community. He has been quoted as saying that race is a central issue in the schools and that he is in a good position to deal with that issue. He is right. For starters, he is a black male, and everyone

seems to agree that we need more role models for the young African-American men who are not being well served and at the same time are frequently those creating discipline problems in our schools. But he is much more. If you’ve followed him over the years, you will have seen him at rallies against violence, regardless of the skin color of the victim. You’ve seen him involved in mentoring programs for children of all backgrounds. And there are so many things that you will never see, because he does them under the radar. I can’t pretend to be objective about this particular commissioner; I consider him a trustworthy friend (though I have promised him that I will not hesitate to criticize him, if warranted). I suggest that if the anonymous bloggers listen carefully, they will like what they hear. Whether he is talking to parents, to students, to teachers, Muhammad’s watchword is “responsibility.” Performance and behavior in the schools, he argues consistently, is a community responsibility. Those who have taken him to task, I would argue, have a responsibility to come forward, identify themselves and start a real dialogue. By their fruits, someone once wrote, you shall know them. KRAMER GETS THE STORY BEHIND THE RICK SPRINGFIELD TRIAL s European authorities were foiling a massive terror attack in Belgium, Syracuse had concerns of its own: the Rick Springfield butt retrial.

By now you know how it ended: A jury needed an hour last week to clear the pop star and his slender “butt region” of negligently injuring a concertgoer in 2004 at the state fair. Observers widely hailed the decision as consistent with the laws of New York state, and physics. “He doesn’t even have an ass. How could he knock anyone over with it?” posteriorated Leann Walsh, manager at the Blue Tusk pub. Springfield was performing in the crowd when, according to a lawsuit filed by Vicki Calcagno, of Liverpool, he fell backward, striking her with his backside. She barely regained consciousness in time to snap more photos of the pop icon and to see a free Cyndi Lauper concert at Chevy Court the next week. In a cosmic sense, the lawsuit was Springfield’s punishment for giving the world the 1981 smash hit “Jessie’s Girl,” which I’m now unable to stop humming no matter how many times I bash my temples with a waffle iron. Please, make it stop. With so many lofty legal principles in play, it was gratifying to see Syracuse finally getting its moment where the sun doesn’t shine. Trial coverage went

1.21.15 - 1.27.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

global, and the entertainment industry watched closely. Would entertainers still be allowed to entertain, or would they be reduced to tightly clenched, risk-managing robutts? “We have to have freedom,” Springfield said in victory. “We’re human beings.” The trial’s most dramatic moments came — where else? — at the end. As the lawyers made their closing arguments, Calcagno began to tremble. Once the jury was sent to deliberate, she was overcome by a seizure-sobbing-twitching episode, a scene straight out of General Hospital, the soap opera in which Springfield appeared for years. Paramedics arrived and carted her off to wherever they take litigants whose cases are so weak even the Heavy Hitters take a pass. Observers rolled their eyes, and the town’s personal injury lawyers shuddered. After this, good luck getting a favorable judgment from a local jury even if your client was impaled on a nuclear fuel rod. It was left to Springfield to save us from this circus. Throughout his six-day exile, the singer-actor-author, a youthful 65, praised the town’s architecture, the warmth of our people and the quality of our restau-

rants, giving shout-outs to Lemon Grass and Taste of India. He signed autographs. He even promised to come back. “People here can be hard on the place,” I told him, neglecting to disclose that I’m a leading offender. “Sometimes they don’t appreciate our assets.” “That’s everywhere,” he replied. As the week unfolded, I’ll confess I felt a connection with Springfield, and it wasn’t just his charm and resolve. As a white male whose buttock region also has been burned by the public spotlight, I felt Springfield’s pain. In my case, it’s the negative attention that comes from acute plumber’s butt, the demeaning name for a syndrome that afflicts millions. Kramer Krack sighting No. 11,602 was reported Friday night at the Ridge bar in Chittenango. Everyone there had a good laugh at my expense. Again. Thanks especially to those of you who captured the moment on your cell phones. How compassionate. Meanwhile, newly released video implicates my buttocks area in various destructive acts around town. If you must watch — find the video at syracusenew times.com — don’t jump to conclusions. Raw video sometimes gives a bum rap. Alas, the photo accompanying this column also is misleading. While it might look as if Springfield and I are joyously bumping butts to celebrate the verdict, there’s a back story. The next morning, as he was on his way home to sun-kissed Malibu, I awoke with a sharp pain in my bootyius maximus, shoulders, neck and brain. Evidence will show that the injuries were sustained in the recoil zone, or “spring field.” Sorry, Rick, but my lawyer at 1-800-JUSTASS says my case is rock solid. We’ll be in touch. Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions: Hack Your Brain B y Dr. G ar y R odzie wicz

W

e would all like to eat less, exercise more and finally finish that project. It would be so easy if we could just change our habits to do these things.

But changing habits is hard, and the new good habit usually doesn’t stick. A lot of this is due to how our brain works way down in the language circuits. Fortunately, a lot of recent research shows us how to hack these deep circuits in our brain to help change our habits. Let’s talk about that. Habits, it turns out, are programs that run on our brain’s “computer.” They have a structure to them. And, as any good hacker knows, if you know how the program works, you can hack it. So, let’s learn about the structure of our habits. Our goal is to hack our own brain’s computer. Cool. Habits have three parts: the cue, the habit behavior and the reward. You see the doughnut, you eat the doughnut and you get the sugar rush. Cue, habit behavior, reward. There is tons of research that shows we can forget about messing with the cue and the reward parts of our habits. However, the weak point in any habit is the habit behavior. Hacker alert! What we are going to do is figure out the cues for our bad habit, the rewards for our bad habit

and then slip in a new habit that will make it a good habit. Your brain won’t know the difference. Sneaky, eh? So, let’s get hacking. Charles Duhigg writes in his book, The Power of Habit, that you can change habits by first figuring out what the cues are for your doughnut eating. Walking into the kitchen? Box on the counter? Break room at 2 p.m.? Waiting for the kids after school? Spend some time keeping notes about this. You then look at the rewards. Ask yourself how you feel after that doughnut goes down. Happy? Satisfied? Reminds you of your childhood? Connected to the Doughnut Brotherhood? Jot down some feelings. Now for the hack. You take this cue and you take this reward, and you slip in a new behavior. Try out a bunch of them. Maybe a cup of coffee, maybe an apple, maybe a walk, maybe calling your mom. Jot down some notes about how you feel after you do these things. You want to feel as close to the post-doughnut rush as possible. Then you pay a little attention to this fiddling around for a few weeks. Every time you get the

doughnut jones, you slip in your new behavior and try to match the reward feelings. Rinse and repeat until your coffee, apple, walk or phone call to Mom starts making you feel as good as that doughnut rush. OK, recap time. You can hack your brain and change a bad habit Dr. Gary Rodziewicz into a good habit. You do this by figuring out the cue that triggers the bad habit. You then figure out why it feels so good, what’s the emotional reward that you get? You then slip in a new good habit behavior between this cue and this reward. Pay attention and fiddle with it for a few weeks. You are now a hacker. Do one of these habit changes at a time over a couple of months. Just one. And, by January 2016, you might have a whole new list of New Year’s resolution to look at. Happy New Year, and Happy Hacking! SNT Gary Rodziewicz is a board-certified neurosurgeon in Fayetteville. T

his year will be different! This time I’ll really do it! No more sugar! No white flour! I’ll exercise every day! No more excuses!

Sound familiar? Here’s my advice, and forgive me if this sounds harsh, but don’t even bother. I’ve worked with people for more than 20 years on weight and eating issues, and the odds are against us making lasting behavioral changes using methods like New Year’s resolutions. About 95 percent of people who go on diets gain the weight back. And then some. So if you’ve already broken your resolutions, join the party. You know by now that resolutions are a setup for failure. Can you even remember what your resolution was last year? Did you start out all gung-ho, only to fall off the wagon after one bite of the forbidden food, or one missed exercise session? Then did you have the classic “what the hell” reaction, when you ate all the junk food in a nine-mile radius? Who needs the inevitable self-punishment that comes with falling off a rigid, pleasure-free diet or exercise regimen? Restrictive diets and over-exercise can leave us feeling depleted physically and emotionally — and a little more defeated when they ultimately fail. Then we go right back to the chocolate-covered caramels to help us feel better about failing on yet another diet. It’s all-or-nothing thinking, and it rarely ends well for us. Fortunately, there’s been a real shift over the years in the field of psychology and wellness based on rigorous research on what really motivates us to change. Turns out, we can’t “hate ourselves healthy” (these unkind thoughts and feelings actually cause stress by increasing cortisol). We can’t come from a place of disgust and self-loathing and expect to be successful with our health goals. Real change comes with self-compassion, and being more gentle, as in: “Wow, eating Nutella out of the jar with a tablespoon really doesn’t make me feel too well. Next time, I’ll put it on a banana and sit down

1.21.15 - 1.27.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

and enjoy it. And save it for special occasions, so I can really appreciate its loveliness.” Contrast this to: “I can’t believe you ate all that Nutella! You are disgusting, and have no willpower!!” Which do you think leads to a better outcome? Giving up the typical kinds of resolutions might seem like heresy to some of you, who fear that without rigid food and exercise rules, you will be reclining on your couch every night with a family-sized bag of M&Ms resting on your belly. But overeating sweets isn’t compassionate and self-respecting. It doesn’t feel good to have a candy hangover. Eating a delicious, fresh dinner and then savoring some chocolate would be a more balanced, nourishing approach. I know this doesn’t have the appeal of a standard New Year’s resolution. It wouldn’t make a splashy cover of a magazine (Don’t diet! It doesn’t work! It’s a set up!), but it has the advantage of being sane and doable. So here’s my radical approach to resolutions: Instead of setting food and exercise goals that are unrealistic and rigid, find something that is sustainable, feels good on a deep level and has more far-reaching benefits than getting into your skinny jeans. A kind of resolution with “legs.” Practices that can make you feel happier all around. Here are some suggestions: — Every day, when I wake up, instead of grabbing my phone to look at Facebook or my texts, I will experiment with taking four relaxing breaths. — Every day, I will ask myself how I can take better care of my mind and body. — Every day, I will take some quiet time and just decompress. Even if it is five minutes. Not as flashy, perhaps. But these kinds of resolutions are more likely to be with you far into the New Year. SNT

ow do veterans respond to the wellness therapies offered at Clear Path for Veterans?

In a recent survey, they reported: “This is great! It was truly what I needed all along!” “The pain relief I get here is, by far, more than I get at any of my doctor’s office visits. Love the staff.” “This was my first massage, and it was very good. I’ll be trying it again” With the goal to help veterans and their families transition to a healthy, satisfying, non-military life, Clear Path, in Chittenango, is a community-based organization that wants veterans to know about and use its services and others to see Clear Path as a way to give back to those who served our country. Maryann Piazza — board member at Clear Path, volunteer reiki practitioner and social worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center — explains what makes Clear Path different: “Clear Path is a place that does not label the veteran. As wonderful as the VA is in providing very good care as a hospital, every veteran has to have a medical or mental health reason for going there. At Clear Path, the only label anyone has is ‘veteran’ and, most importantly, it is open for any of their family members with them.” “Clear Path offers ‘wrap-around’ services,” says Charlene Marx, wellness coordinator at Clear Path and an Army veteran. A veteran schedules a dog training session and follows that up with an hour of polarity therapy in the wellness wing. “Many programs dovetail into one another,” Marx says. “For example, at a recent fibromyalgia warrior reset for female veterans, chef Adam prepared a vegan meal, which was best suited for the symptoms experienced.” Along with integrative mind/body modalities, Clear

Path provides Dogs2Vets, recreation and agriculture programs and culinary programs focused on farm to table cooking and positive nutrition. Integrative Medicine. Clear Path offers integrative medicine practices that complement traditional medical methods. Certified volunteer practitioners offer sessions in the self-care practices of meditation and mindfulness, acupuncture, massage, yoga, talking circles and energy healing techniques such as reiki and polarity. While some of these wellness paths are not familiar to everyone, recent comments by veterans clearly demonstrate a positive response: “I was very comfortable. I feel centered and relaxed.” “Made me sleep more :)” “Really, really helpful.” “Head & neck pain MUCH better.” “Non invasive but very healing.” Dogs2Vets. The primary goal of the Dog2Vets program is to maximize overall wellness and provide emotional support for those with post-traumatic stress or military sexual trauma and others who suspect they have either as a result of their military service. Recreation and Agriculture. Hiking trails are open year-round. Strawberry picking and community gardening take advantage of Clear Path’s natural setting. Golf clinics are held nearby at The Ridge public golf course. Creative arts workshops are offered, along with Project Healing Waters, a fly-fishing program that includes fly-tying and rod-building classes for beginners to those with experience who are adapting their skills to new abilities. All equipment is provided.

“We listen to the veterans’ needs and adjust and grow our wellness program to meet them.” The wellness programs at Clear Plath for Veterans are growing, and there are plans to expand services in 2015, including additional culinary and nutrition programs. “We listen to the veterans’ needs and adjust and grow our wellness program to meet them,” Marx adds. “The door to healing is many faceted,” explains Piazza, “and at Clear Path, it creates many opportunities to heal without the stigma of a label.” For information, visit Clear Path for Veterans, 1223 Salt Springs Road, Chittenango, call 687-3310 or visit clearpath 4vets.com. AMAZON BREAKS OUT ANOTHER SET OF ORIGINAL SHOWS

I

n light of Amazon Studios’ first Golden Globe win for Transparent and the announcement that Woody Allen will direct a new half-hour comedy next year (his first foray into TV), there is considerable buzz around its fourth pilot season, which boasts seven new comedies, dramas and docu-series, and six new shows for kids. Amazon’s “pilot seasons” allow anyone with an Amazon account to view and vote for their favorite pilots. The audience favorites get a full season; Transparent and the hilarious musical comedy Mozart in the Jungle were among the series greenlit in early 2014. Among this year’s slate of pilots are a Civil War drama, a darkly comedic meditation on gun ownership, a dystopian post-WWII alt-history and a documentary magazine from The New Yorker. Set at the start of the Civil War, Point of Honor follows a Virginia family as they free their slaves and then fight for the Confederacy, defending their Southern way of life. It stars True Blood alum Nathan Parsons as military man John Rhodes and Annabelle Stephenson (Revenge), Riley Voelkel (The Newsroom) and Hanna Mangan Lawrence (Old School) as his sisters, left home to tend the laborless farm. The pilot was written and co-executive produced by Carlton Cuse (Lost).

Another True Blood alum stars in the darkly comedic Cocked. Sam Trammell plays Richard Paxson, a boy from the sticks who left his rural Colorado upbringing behind in pursuit of big-city life but is forced to return (with his liberal wife and teens in tow) to help run the family’s gun business. What would the world be like if the Allies lost World War II? In The Man in the High Castle, based on Philip K. Dick’s Hugo Award-winning 1962 novel, ownership of the United States and much of the world has been split between Japan and Germany. It’s the 1960s, and tension between the two major powers is growing. The series follows an ensemble cast of outlaws and secret agents in the American West. It has a sparkling pedigree, with an executive production team that includes producers of The Good Wife (including Ridley Scott) and The X-Files. From across the pond, there’s the American reboot of the 2011-2013 U.K. series Mad Dogs. It is about

four middle-aged men who come together to celebrate the early retirement of a rich friend and get much more than they bargained for. The series stars Steve Zahn (Tremé), Billy Zane (Twin Peaks), Romany Malco (Weeds), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) and Ben Chaplin (from the U.K. cast). In addition to its dark comedies, the pilot season features two straight-ahead half-hour comedies, both life re-evaluation narratives set in high-class society. In Salem Rogers, Leslie Bibb (About a Boy) plays a former supermodel re-entering the real world after 10 years (10 years?!) in rehab. Josh Casaubon (One Life to Live) plays hippie-coddled hunk Logan Wood, a playboy yoga teacher who must reconsider his priorities after a breakup in Down Dog. There’s plenty of man-butt and more gratuitous sex than one usually sees in a half-hour comedy. Finally, perhaps the most experimental (and, to be honest, my favorite) of the Amazon 2015 pilots is the new docu-series, The New Yorker Presents. The first episode features Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) in a short film based on a story by Simon Rich (Saturday Night Live); a poem by Matthew Dickman, narrated by Andrew Garfield; a documentary about biologist Tyrone Hayes based on a New Yorker article; and an interview with performance artist Marina Abramovic, conducted by New Yorker writer Ariel Levy. Anyone with an Amazon account can watch and vote on these pilots for free on Amazon Instant Video. To view full series, however, you must have an Amazon Prime account ($99 per year or $49 for students with a .edu email address). Rachel Lampert: The Way She Was

“A

ll art is autobiographical,” said movie director Federico Fellini. “The pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” Rachel Lampert, artistic director of Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre Company, has been propagating autobiographical pearls for the stage for some time.

REVIEW

The Tea Comes Last was her one-woman show about staging West Side Story in China. In The Angle of the Sun, all identities were obscured but the actress in the lead, short with dark, curly hair, looked like a young version of Lampert. With the world premiere of Count Me In, Lampert moves into Fellini’s 8 ½ territory. She re-examines episodes from her past, with some characters fictionalized while other figures from life are the actual ones seen on stage. Lampert appears as herself, both then and now. The occasion for this voyage through the past is an invitation to attend a 50th high school reunion. In 1965, at the precocious age of 16, Lampert graduated from Brooklyn’s Midwood High School. With a substantially motivated, Jewish population, Midwood was a competitive place. When students were vying to be valedictorian, their parents brought attorneys to meet with the principal. Never a cheerleader or even salutatorian, Lampert nonetheless had directed student shows and was widely known. And because she was a dancer as a teen, the reunion team wants her to perform updates of what she did then.

1.21.15 - 1.27.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

This poses two questions. Can the 60-ish Lampert, who does not cut the same silhouette as her teenage self, perform in public doing the same steps she did five decades earlier? And more importantly, has her life been filled with the kinds of triumphs that will allow her to face those long-ago, nearly forgotten classmates, now preening about their worldly accomplishments and affluence? Because Count Me In is generous with exposition, it is not necessary to have any previous knowledge of playwright Lampert to be involved in the play’s tensions or to celebrate its joys. Her Kitchen Theatre, of which she has been head for 16 years, might be prominent on the Ithaca cultural scene, but she never cites it in Count Me In. She does allude to husband David Squires, the actuary who brought Lampert to upstate New York two decades ago. Squires gamely plays himself in brief scenes with short speeches. The past that Lampert prefers to recall is when she ran her own modern ballet company from 1975 to 1992. The creation of the National Endowment for the Arts, not coincidentally also in 1965, included the Dance Touring Program. This was designed to take

expressive, modern dance out to the people. Lampert’s group visited regions where no one had ever heard of Mikhail Fokine or José Limón, places like the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Oklahoma. Finding an audience for such fare was one question; facing the hostility of townies and cops after hours was another. Much dialogue puts Lampert’s character beside her former dancers, a trim Asian woman, Leda (Lydia Gaston), and a witty, charismatic black man, Sam (Keith Pillow). Gaston, a Filipina despite her Anglo name, is the same person who traveled with the Lampert company 30 years ago. Sam, we realize quickly, is a fictionalized representation of Stephen Nunley, earlier a traveling dancer, who continues with Lampert as managing director of the Kitchen. He even gives the curtain speech for the performance. Metaphysically, it is disconcerting to see the person and his artistic doppelganger in such close proximity. But Nunley has nothing to complain about: Sam gets most of the best lines. At stage right Lampert the character is pursuing her past via a different route. She conjures up her high school dance partner Jorge (suave Tucker Davis), a Puerto Rican boy who takes her through the waltz, swing and tango. These are workouts, but the mature Lampert has plenty of breath for her lines. An even greater act of conjuring is bringing back the much-loved dancer Toby (Avery Sobczak), who died 25 years previously. His fleeting apparition behind scenic designer Tyler M. Perry’s rotating panels is director Emily Jackson’s most startling touch. Larry Pressgrove’s original music for Toby’s return, the multi-meaning “It’s Time,” is the high point of Rachel’s quest for an answer about whether to attend the Midwood reunion. SNT

Papership Sets Sail for Rock Glory Mark Romano was a late bloomer when it came to mastering guitar. “I always wanted to play,” the Papership musician recalls. “I tried drums. I was a failed drummer. I couldn’t get it right.” It wasn’t until Romano was 22, back when he attended SUNY Oneonta in the music industry program (he graduated in 1999), that he picked up a guitar himself. “My roommate played guitar and taught me the seven basic cowboy chords,” he says. “And now Papership is the first band I’ve been in.” For a first go-round at a band, Romano hit the jackpot. Papership started playing in 2007, as the right set of players eventually fell into the fold. The lineup of close friends now includes Alan Smead on bass, Charlie Bell on synthesizer and keys, Joel Reissig on drums, Shawn Sullivan on guitar and Romano on guitar and vocals. Romano says the band has finally hit the sound he was looking for from the beginning. “On the old tapes, you can hear the ideas of what we wanted to become,” he says. “How that happened was all by chance. We haven’t planned anything.” The group often hits the road for gigs in Brooklyn, Utica, Rochester and Buffalo. But on Saturday, Jan. 24, the band will rock the new Funk ’n Waffles Downtown with Professional Victims for an extra-special occasion: Both bands will be celebrating a CD release that night. Self-described as trash-pop garage rock, the nearly negative title fits the band to a T. Although Romano only played acoustic guitar prior to Papership, the crunch of electric guitars defines the group as lead lines and keys riffs mingle and dance around one another. Full of conviction, the lyrics are real, and the rhythms are driving. Romano promises that infectious pulse will beat throughout the Saturday show-

case. “We keep it fun and upbeat,” he says. “We keep the energy going and play our hearts out every time.” The band has recorded two albums and played local shows, yet Romano admits they’ve been under the public’s radar, a fact Sullivan quickly pointed out upon joining. “Shawn said, ‘You know, the songs you have up on Reverbnation aren’t with the same people,’” Romano remembers. “I said, ‘We’re underground, man.’ He said, ‘Yeah, deep underground.’” Romano’s now ready to bring the band to the surface. “We spent a year and a half trying to make a previous recording painstakingly perfect,” he says. “Then Shawn joined (in summer 2014) and made us different again, so we scrapped that project. We worked a few weeks on something and I realized: This is how I want to record. It’s way better to work off the cuff. I try to do everything in one or two takes. It’s hard to give emotion on a song 20 times.” In November the band hit Moletrax, working with sound engineer Jeff Moleski to capture the enthusiastic, raw sound, and whipped through the record. Around the same time, Professional Victims’ new album wrapped at Moletrax. Sullivan, who is in both bands (Professional Victims also features his wife, Ashley Cox), suggested the double CD release party. “We’re so excited to have (Sullivan) in the band,” Romano says. “He fills out the sound and he’s a great musician. I’m so excited to have him and he’s a close friend now, too.” Although Romano keeps a sales job during the day, the more the band grows, the more his passion does with it. “If I just worked during the day and watched TV at night, it wouldn’t be fulfilling,” he says. “Music is such a big part of my life. It’s a lot of hard work, but so rewarding. And this is the tightest unit we’ve ever had. We hang out even when we’re not playing. That’s rare.” SNT

Victims of Love

Professional Victims, featuring the husband-wife team of Ashley Cox and Shawn Sullivan, will celebrate the release of their third album on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Funk ’n Waffles Downtown, 307 S. Clinton St. Most of Fathom the Cosmos was recorded at the couple’s home studio during 2014, and mixed and mastered at Moletrax. “On this album we tried to explore more time and space,” says Sullivan. “Our songs in the past averaged around two and a half minutes, but we wanted to see where the songs could take us. We weren’t trying to write pop singles on this one, but those elements are definitely in there.” Professional Victims kicked off 2015 with a Jan. 8 gig at the Westcott Theater as the opener for Martha Davis and the Motels. “We’ve got a killer new website and our new CD to promote,” enthuses Cox. “We’ll just continue to push it, experiment with new sounds, performing locally and regionally while working on our next CD. This past year has been so enjoyable for me, performing with my husband. There’s always a little bit of stress here and there being in any band, but it’s been a lot easier now that it’s just the two of us. Shawn programs the beats, I play the melodies; it’s how we’ve been writing lately.” Cox is excited about performing on the same bill with Papership, which Shawn is in. “It’s a big sound,” she says. “The gritty alt-rock voice of Mark Romano tugs at my heartstrings, Joel (Reissig) kicks ass on the drums, I love Charlie Bell’s melodies on the keys. Huge fan of the lead guitar player (Shawn Sullivan): He’s super dreamy. And there’s nothing better than watching (bassist) Al Smead on stage. The man is a legend.” The couple already knows the dining choices at the new venue. “I want to try the falafel waffle,” says Cox, “Shawn will have the Sailor Jerry Rum Waffle.” syracusenewtimes.com | 1.21.15 - 1.27.15

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Is there a patron saint of advertising or a goddess of marketing or a power animal that rules publicity and promotion? If so, I’m going to find out, then pray to them in your behalf. It’s high time for your underappreciated talents and unsung accomplishments to receive more attention. And I am convinced that the astrological moment is ripe for just such a development. Help me out here, Aries. What can you do to get your message out better? What tricks do you have for attracting the interest of those who don’t know yet about your wonders? Polish up your self-presentation, please. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). During his 67 years of life, Taurus-born Leonardo da Vinci achieved excellence in 12 different fields, from painting to engineering to anatomy. Today he is regarded as among the most brilliant humans who ever lived. “His genius was so rare and universal that it can be said that nature worked a miracle on his behalf,” said one observer. “He towered above all other artists through the strength and the nobility of his talents,” said another. Yet on his death bed, Leonardo confessed, “I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have.” Typical for a Taurus, he underestimated himself! It’s very important that you not do the same, especially in the coming weeks. The time has come for you to give yourself more of the credit and respect you deserve.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20). Where you have been and what you have done will be of little importance in the coming weeks. Both your mistakes and your triumphs will be irrelevant. In my estimation, you have a sacred duty to spy on the future and reconnoiter the pleasures and challenges that lie ahead. So I suggest you head off toward the frontier with an innocent gleam in your eye and a cheerful hunger for interesting surprises. How’s your Wildness Quotient? If it’s in a slump, pump it up. CANCER (June 21-July 22). Will you ever find

that treasured memento you misplaced? Is there any chance of reviving a dream you abandoned? You are in a phase when these events are more likely than usual to happen. The same is true about an opportunity that you frittered away or a missing link that you almost tracked down but ultimately failed to secure. If you will ever have any hope of getting another shot at those lost joys, it would be in the coming weeks. For best results, purge the regret and remorse you still feel about the mistakes you think you made once upon a time.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) In the early 1300s, the people of the Mexica tribe had no homeland. They had wandered for centuries through the northern parts of what we now call Mesoamerica. According to legend, that changed in 1323, when their priests received a vision of an eagle eating a snake while perched at the top of a prickly pear cactus. They declared that this was the location of the tribe’s future power spot. Two years later, the prophecy was fulfilled. On an island in the middle of a lake, scouts spied the eagle, snake and cactus. And that was where the tribe built the town of Tenochtitlan, which ultimately became the center of an empire. Today that place is called Mexico City. Have you had an equivalent vision, Leo? If you haven’t yet, I bet you will soon. Go in search of it. Be alert. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) By the end of the 16th century, nutmeg was in high demand throughout Europe. It was valued as a spice, medicine and preservative. There was only one place in the world where it grew: on the Indonesian island of Run. The proto-capitalists of the Dutch East India Company gained dominion over Run, and enslaved the local population to work on plantations. They fully controlled the global sale of nutmeg, which allowed them to charge exorbitant prices. But ultimately their monopoly collapsed. Here’s one reason why: Pigeons ate nutmeg seeds on Run, then flew to other islands and pooped them out,

By Rob Brezsny

enabling plants to grow outside of Dutch jurisdiction. I see this story as an apt metaphor for you in the coming months, Virgo. What’s your equivalent of the pigeons? Can you find unlikely allies to help you evade the controlling force that’s limiting your options?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Have you triggered

any brilliant breakthroughs lately? Have you made any cathartic departures from the way things have always been done? Have you thought so far outside the box that you can’t even see the box any more? Probably not. The last few weeks have been a time of retrenchment and stabilization for you. But I bet you will start going creatively crazy very soon — and I mean that in the best sense. To ensure maximum health and well-being, you simply must authorize your imagination to leap and whirl and dazzle.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) The cassava plant

produces a starchy root that’s used as food by a half-billion people all over the planet. No one can simply cook it up and eat it, though. In its raw state, it contains the poisonous chemical cyanide, which must be removed by careful preparation. An essential first step is to soak it in water for at least 18 hours. I see this process as a metaphor for the work you have ahead of you, Scorpio. A new source of psychological and spiritual sustenance will soon be available, but you will have to purge its toxins before you can use and enjoy it.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Italian composer Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) didn’t like to work hard, and yet he was also prolific. In fact, his desire to avoid strenuous exertion was an important factor in his abundant output. He got things done fast. His most famous opera, The Barber of Seville, took him just 13 days to finish. Another trick he relied on to reduce his workload was plagiarizing himself. He sometimes recycled passages from his earlier works for use in new compositions. Feeling good was another key element in his approach to discipline. If given a choice, he would tap into his creative energy while lounging in bed or hanging out with his buddies. In the coming weeks, Sagittarius, I recommend you consider strategies like his.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Each hour of

every day, the sun offers us more energy than oil, gas and coal can provide in an entire year. Sadly, much of our star’s generous gift goes to waste. Our civilization isn’t set up to take advantage of the bounty. Is there a comparable dynamic in your personal life, Capricorn? Are you missing out on a flow of raw power and blessings simply because you are ignorant of it or haven’t made the necessary arrangements to gather it? If so, now would be an excellent time to change your ways.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) According to my analysis of the long-term astrological omens, 2015 is the year you can get totally serious about doing what you were born to do. You will be given the chance to slough off all that’s fake and irrelevant and delusory. You will be invited to fully embrace the central purpose of your destiny. If you’re interested in taking up that challenge, I suggest you adopt Oscar Wilde’s motto: “Nothing is serious except passion.” Your primary duty is to associate primarily with people and places and situations that feed your deepest longings.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “Give up all hope

for a better past,” writes Emily Fragos in her poem “Art Brut.” That’s generally sound advice. But I think you may be able to find an exception to its truth in the coming weeks. As you work to forgive those who have trespassed against you, and as you revise your interpretations of bygone events, and as you untie knots that have weighed you down and slowed you up for a long time, you just may be able to create a better past. Dare to believe that you can transform the shape and feel of your memories.
