Authorities blamed the shooting death of a 19-year-old college student on a dispute over the rules of a beer-pong game. Police said Ronald McNeil, 39, and others attending a graduation party in College Station, Texas, argued until they eventually came to blows. The host asked McNeil to leave. He did but returned with

a handgun and fired 14 times. He told police he intended only to scare the guests, but his gunshots injured two and killed the 19-year-old, a bystander. (Houston Chronicle)

When a tornado warning prompted ground crews at Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers World Airport to seek shelter underground, passengers on Delta Air Lines flights from Minneapolis and Salt Lake City were left stranded on the tarmac.

This will be the last time I take a stab at regional planning.

HANDLED WITH SCARES

I

’m a glass-half-full guy. I admire and trust our civic leaders. For the most part, I believe that our community is headed in the right direction.

Unfortunately, that mindset took a hit the other night when I attended what I was told was a local government convention at the New York State Fairgrounds titled: Finding Real Initiatives Generating Hope Today (F.R.I.G.H.T.) Night.

Good grief. While I accept that Syracuse will never be as polished as, say, Paris or Barcelona, the program made me realize that we still have a long way to go in terms of marketing ourselves as the wonderful community we know this to be.

The first seminar, “The Fallen Giant,” was an obvious reference to the area’s proud manufacturing tradition. It was held in a series of tunnels, some of which were pitch black while others were lit by bothersome strobes.

I noticed that many of the presenters had terrible rashes, wounds and other facial deformities. I don’t mean to judge based on appearance, but first impressions count. Why not subtly underscore the beauty of our region by adding one or two physically attractive speakers, even if we have to import them? It also struck me that we are a really bad hair town.

Another concern was the message itself. At one point, an overzealous planner type — I had a suspicion it was one of the Driscolls — got up in my face

and hissed, “Tell me you’re scared! Tell me you’re scared.” Again, I don’t mean to nitpick, but we need to be more upbeat if we hope to attract the investment dollars that fuel progress.

The next seminar, “Clown Prison,” was meant to showcase Central New York’s innovative approach to criminal justice. But instead of prisoners working on their college degrees and writing poetry, I saw that most were rotting away — quite literally.

“Why the long face?” I asked a miscreant who resembled a decomposing horse’s head. He lowered his gaze and said nothing, and so an opportunity to promote local agribusiness was squandered. Visitors should have been allowed to feed him a delicious locally grown apple to cheer him up.

Somewhere in the chaos I got lost in a passage of dangling tendrils. A female clown offender who turned out to be a man barked at me. I’m all for creative sentencing options, but this seminar raised more questions than it answered. Why do we lock some clowns behind bars while others roam free? Why do we mix male and female clown populations? And is the bulb-headed freak at the door pregnant or just in need of Upstate Medical University’s excellent bariatric surgery program?

“The Haunted Mansion” seminar troubled me even more. This was a well-intended effort to encourage restoration of our area’s many beautiful old homes, but here’s one thought: If you’re going to serve food at an open house, why not promote regional specialties such as chicken spiedies and salt potatoes?

Instead, a disheveled caterer led me to a pan on a stove and asked if I was hungry. When I inquired as to what was in the pan, he replied, “Someone’s back.”

Come on, organizers! Human back is an acquired taste, at best. At least offer extra Wango Tango sauce.

I will say the young lady rising out of the coffin exuded a perky professionalism that made me proud to be a Central New Yorker.

But at “Chainsaw Massacre,” a symposium on regional land management, it was back to the same old negativity, starting with the mission statement: “He’s gonna get you.” Who needs to hear that?

Nor do attendees need to hear power saws, mad laughter or some cretin banging on a truck. I get it: Syracuse is a city that likes to roll up its sleeves and get to work. But can’t we tone it down to a dull roar when we’re hosting a major event?

Maybe the worst moment was when I became ensnared in a hall of hanging bodies, and suddenly a barely living one appeared. “Get the $%#^ away from me, Hillary!” I screamed.

As for the Flying Monkeys of Grroz, I’m all for promoting Syracuse Hancock International Airport. But nothing takes the fun out of air travel quicker than being reminded that furious, green-faced monkeys who fly exist. And they hate you.

Syracuse, we can and must do better.

‘EATING WITH A PURPOSE’

J

ohn Tumino used to cook for a full house every night at Asti Caffe, the Tumino family’s popular restaurant on North Salina Street. Now he feeds homeless people living under bridges and overpasses in downtown Syracuse, delivering chef-prepared, home-cooked food two times a week.

Tumino and his wife, Leigh-Ann, operate In My Father’s Kitchen, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reaching out to this “invisible’’ population and bringing hope, one meal and one person at a time.

Their latest project to benefit In My Father’s Kitchen involves what you could call mindful eating at home.

Tumino calls it “eating with a purpose.’’

Last month, In My Father’s Kitchen introduced Taste and See pasta sauce, now on sale Fridays at its storefront office and resource center at 501 Hawley Ave. The sauce is sold in 24-ounce jars and costs $6.95. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit’s mission of connecting with and feeding the chronically homeless and refugees adjusting to a new life in Syracuse, as well as assisting the homeless in taking steps to “come inside.’’

Made with all the traditional ingredients — tomatoes, onions, garlic and basil, with a hint of crushed red pepper — the sauce is a natural for Tumino. After all, it’s his grandmother’s recipe.

The sauce, which Tumino concocted regularly at Asti, is now part of the comforting meals he creates

for his outreach, assisted by volunteers he calls sous chefs. Now he’s making it in 300-jar batches in the shared kitchen at Nelson Farms, a food processing incubator and Made in New York foods store operated by SUNY Morrisville.

“This sauce is quality food, made with love,’’ Tumino says. “Now it’s going for a greater good. It’s supporting our mission. When you eat it, you’re sustaining yourself and you’re helping to sustain other people. You’re eating with a purpose.’’

Tumino and his wife have operated In My Father’s Kitchen since September 2011. Both are ordained ministers. Tumino says he answered a call from God to leave the restaurant business and put his culinary talents to use in another way: feeding the homeless and others in need.

One day, Tumino says, he was on the Bear Street exit ramp from Route 690 when he saw a man holding a “homeless — please help’’ sign. Many motorists avert their eyes, Tumino says. Yet the spirit moved him to bring the man food and let him know, “You are not invisible.’’

Earlier this year, the idea for Taste and See “came to me,’’ Tumino says. He introduced the sauce at a launch party and fundraiser in late September. Local chefs prepared several dishes with it, including sausage, peppers and onions and a creamy blush sauce served with tortellini.

Tumino says the sauce can be used on pizza, served with meatballs and eggplant Parmesan and used as an ingredient in meatloaf or in soups.

If you want, you can eat it right out of the jar, Tumino says with a smile. “That’s how good it is.’’

Those who have tasted it agree. “Believe me when I say this: This is the best bottled sauce there is,’’ says one fan on the In My Father’s Kitchen Facebook page. “I love the large pieces of basil in the sauce. The final listed ingredient is red pepper; it gives just a little ‘hint’ of a zing. Fabulous. The flavor is not overpowering. It enhances anything you use it in.’’

Tumino hopes to sell the sauce at the Central New York Regional Market, increase his list of local retail outlets and grow the brand enough so that he can hire and train some of his formerly homeless “friends’’ for production and sales jobs.

“The pieces are coming together,’’ Tumino says. “Food brings people to the table.’’

SCENERY-CHEWING PLANT STEALS THE SHOW

G

ardeners often battle invasive plants that seem to be trying for world conquest. But at least they don’t yell for a steady diet of human flesh and blood like the monstrous (and chatty) plant in Little Shop of Horrors, the truly funny musical at Shoppingtown’s Central New York Playhouse.

Now a cult favorite, Little Shop started as movie director Roger Corman’s low-budget 1960 horror comedy about a flesh-devouring plant with a huge appetite. In the 1980s, the team of composer Alan Menkin and writer Howard Ashman created songs with witty lyrics to tell about the rise and fall of bespectacled nebbish Seymour Krelborn (played to perfection by Justin Polly). Seymour is an employee in the dilapidated shop of Mr. Mushnik (Jim Magnarelli, managing to sound Jewish), but after all, skid row isn’t exactly a prime location for a flower shop.

As the gigantic plant gains nationwide attention, it becomes the ticket to a better future for Seymour and his adored girlfriend Audrey. She’s played as a delicious blond bimbo by the excellent Korrie Taylor, skittering about on five-inch heels in a skintight minidress. Audrey sings of her longing for a tract house where she can serve frozen dinners on furniture covered with plastic: “a fence of real chain link and a disposal in the sink.”

Mushnik, afraid of losing the assistant who has brought him prosperity, does a Tevye-type dance as he invites Seymour to become his son and partner.

For this number, music director Abel Searor makes his musicians sound like a klezmer band.

Unfortunately, Audrey is entangled with a hyper-manic, abusive boyfriend, played to the hilt by Jordan Westfall. A sadistic dentist who gets his kicks by inflicting pain, he heightens his pleasure by sniffing nitrous oxide. In what has to be one of the strangest death scenes ever, he laughs himself to death.

Director Dustin Czarny’s greatest coup is his recruitment of J Brazill to sing the voice of Audrey II. In a rumbling basso, the plant shouts, “Cut the crap, baby, and bring on the meat. It’s supper time, bring out the USDA prime. Feed me!”

Three doo-wopping, high-energy girls from the neighborhood (Carleena Manzi, Sami Horner and Ceara Windhausen) give the musical its 1950s feel.

The production’s sound design, however, has been amplified to ear-damaging levels. The higher the decibels soar, the more detail gets lost, making it hard to make out the words. Despite those sonic blasts, Little Shop of Horrors is a perfect show for the Halloween season. SNT

The Syracuse New Times’ Syracuse Area Live Theater awards ceremony is slated for Sunday, Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m., at Syracuse Stage, 820 E. Genesee St. SALT director Liam Fitzpatrick has announced a trio of special honors.

Susan Blumer, one of the triumvirate behind the soon-to-end Covey Theatre Company, is receiving the Hall of Fame honor. Blumer and co-Covey conspirators Garrett Heater and Michael Penny produced a batch of acclaimed shows during a five-year run, from provocative musicals such as Rent and Avenue Q to cerebral original dramas including Playing God and The Romanovs.

Receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award is longtime gay rights activist Earl Colvin, who died May 24 at age 82. Among many accomplishments over the decades, Colvin was also a producer for the local acting troupe Theater a la Carte.

Amelia Beamish, a photographer for several community theaters, will be given a SALT MVP award for her work on Covey’s summer production of Hair.

Beamish’s list of credits also include photographs for Central New York Playhouse productions.

hanks to Halloween falling on a Saturday, when kids and their parents will likely get their freak on during trick-or-treating and costume parties, local theaters and film clubs are jumping the gun with this week’s horrifying attractions. Here’s a rundown.

New teen on the block Zach (Dylam Minnette) moves next door to alluring cutie pie Hannah (Odeya Rush), which causes consternation with her mysterious dad (Jack Black). Turns out that her pop is actually author Stine, and that the monsters in his many page-turners can actually come to life if someone inadvertently unlocks each book, including a droll ventriloquist dummy named Slappy (also voiced by Black). Audiences are enjoying the performances from an appealing cast, which also includes a doofus played by Ryan Lee — who channels his inner Jon Cryer — while the spe-

Gomez) and nice-guy human Johnny (Andy Samberg). Hoping to coax Dennis’ “inner monster,” Drac and his pals embark on a road trip to a distant summer camp where the count first learned about his sawtooth skills. The script’s cornball gags from co-writers Sandler and Robert Smigel just might be older than Bram Stoker, albeit with some plot threads seemingly borrowed from Twilight and

La Cage aux Folles. Sandler’s Hungarian accent also sounds like a cross between Danny Thomas and Hans Conreid’s Uncle Toonoose character from the old Make Room for Daddy sitcom. Meanwhile, members of the Sandler repertory company microphone it in with their respective shticks, including David Spade (as an invisible man), Steve Buscemi (as a werewolf) and Kevin James (as a Frankenstein-esque monster). Still, director Genndy Tartakovsky (from Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory) keeps things brisk and bouncy, while guest voice Mel Brooks provides a welcome aural presence as Drac’s dad Vlad. “Maybe he’s just a late fanger,” the great-granddad muses.

The Black Cat. Satanism, necrophilia and flaying are just some of the components for this classic creepshow, produced in 1934 by Universal Pictures just before the Production Code clamped down on Hollywood productions. The wild production designs and inspired direction

Friday the 13th Parts 4 through 6.

Paramount’s long-running, low-budget slaughterhouses from the 1980s are always good for a few gruesome guffaws amid the blood-splattered screen. The fourth installment, billed in 1984 as The Final Chapter, was not exactly truth in advertising, with A New Beginning turning up the following year. No. 6, the 1986 Jason Lives, might be the best of this bunch, thanks to heavy doses of cartoonish violence (including Welcome Back Kotter’s Ron Palillo in a bit part) and songs by Alice Cooper. On Friday, Oct. 23, 6 p.m. Jason Voorhees is again on the loose in vintage 35mm prints, plus the

Last Man on Earth. Vincent Price fights zombies in this low-budget 1964 classic that was filmed on Italian locales, and at times looks like a predecessor to George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. It will be shown in a 35mm print, as well as the 1980s sci-fi spoof Killer Klowns from Outer Space. At midnight will be a digital showing of the campy rock musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Mask. Fanboys will rejoice about the restoration of this 1961 Canadian thriller that features a handful of still-impressive 3-D sequences. Rome’s 50-seat Cinema Capitol, 234 W. Brides of Dracula. In Hammer Films’ 1960 semi-sequel to the 1958 smash Horror of Dracula, a new count is on the loose at a girls’ school, with dedicated vampire hunter Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) out to stop his evil. David Peel’s fey and feral turn as this film’s bloodsucker is creepily effective, especially when he puts the literal bite on Van Helsing during an eye-opening sequence. Cushing’s crusading hunter might be his best work in the whole Dracula series (he even does many strenuous stunts toward the end), while director Terence Fisher provides an atmosphere of delirious decadence, plus grand supporting turns from Freda Jackson and Martita Hunt. Broadway Bound C Theater impresario Richard Jay-Alexander recalls his Solvay roots and more

hances are good that theater fans who know about epic productions such as Les Miserables and Miss Saigon also know about Richard Jay-Alexander, who ran producer Cameron Mackintosh’s North American operation for 10 years. Jay-Alexander was at Le Moyne College during a whirlwind four-day September stint that included seminars and master classes with budding theater students on topics such as the business of theater.

During a chat at the Coyne Center for the Performing Arts, the energetic showman dished on the celebrities he has collaborated with in recent years, including Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand.

Yet he also poignantly addressed his childhood roots as a member of the Fernandez family in Solvay, home to his loving parents — who are now deceased — as well as his subsequent education at SUNY Oswego. His dad Frank Fernandez logged a 30-year career with Le Moyne’s accounting and business departments.

A telephone interview with Jay-Alexander, 62, at his Miami residence lasted nearly an hour, yet it seems unfair to boil the conversation down to a hit parade of sound bites. So what follows is a generous portion of his hometown memories, as well as his salad days as a Manhattan actor, with more to come in an upcoming issue.

Genesee St. “I’m such a Syracuse New Times fan,” he declared. “I was around during its inception — I was around in 1969, I’m sorry to say — and I always grab it at the airport, and that’s where I glean my info from.” End of plug.

Do you hand out advice to would-be performers?

When people go, “You know, my kid’s so talented,” or “Do you have any advice for my grandson.” Stuff like that. Most people that I know don’t give that kind of advice, because first of all, you don’t know if they’re talented or not. Second of all, it’s an age of contests and people being so attracted to the red carpet or the Glee of it all. You know, it’s a calling and nothing will get in your way, but there is no easy way in. Now it’s even weirder, with the Internet and YouTube, and so you really have to find your place.

But I still believe in training, and you also have to grow up. That’s what those four years of school will do. Otherwise, show business can damage you.

Also, when my dad taught at Le Moyne, there was not a theater department when I was growing up, so this is a dream come true for him. He passed away a little over a year ago (at age 95), and he would have been so happy to see me speaking at Le Moyne. My father had a private practice as a certified public accountant, and he was a professor who ran Le Moyne’s department of business administration.

He was a hands-on dad. He really believed in education, first and foremost. When I was crazed and wanted to move to New York City at age 18, he said, “You’re going to get an education.” And

I was really not smart, because I was obsessed with show business. I failed algebra three times, and the teacher said, “You’re not applying yourself,” and I said, “What does this have to do with show business?” My dad would drive down to that school and he would hammer her: “Don’t you make fun of my son.”

I still don’t know whether I cheated or what, but I passed algebra and my dad called the vice chairman at the theater department at SUNY Oswego to come see me in my senior musical at Solvay High. They took me for one semester on my enthusiasm, because I was turned down by every college in the country. And then, of course, once you start studying Greek theater and music and piano and voice, I became mental and made the dean’s list and got scholarships and I got out of school in three years.

Also, I grew up in Solvay and I never met Jewish people (until I went to college). “What’s Rosh Hoshanah?” I asked. Or people smoking pot who came up from Long Island: “Oh, I could never do that because of my parents.”

But you get a sense of community. I couldn’t have gone from Solvay to New York City; it would have eaten me up alive. So my dad was very, very wise and he took what he knew and applied it to me. A lot of people hate their parents and have unresolved issues, but that’s just not me.

like (Salt City executive director) Joe Lotito: There was just so much theater, and they really formed me. Things like timing are what you learn in community theater, and I totally believe in it. That’s what I give my time to, and all that stuff about paying it forward and giving back, it all sounds nice and I’m not big on words like arcs and journeys. But you do understand that when you can actually help somebody, it’s not a false mission.

There are times when you get paid for a lecture series, and there are times when you commit and then you can’t be held hostage from the truth. It’s not like when you’re getting paid so you have to be nice and kind. It’s a tough business and it’s tougher now because you have so many people who want to do it. When I went to New York City there was hundreds of people (attempting to break into show biz). Now there are thousands and there’s not even room for stars to have shows on Broadway.

But I love it! The interesting thing about me is that I still love what I do and I’m not jaded.

I definitely have opinions. Definitely. But I can back ’em up with years of experience. This fall marks my 40th year in the business, which is sort of astonishing. I just got a new assistant and we’ve been transferring my career from VHS tapes to DVDs, and I’m sitting there and getting dizzy while watching them.

What was it like growing up in Central New York?

You had some bit parts in big movies.

Syracuse was idyllic for me; it was an adventure. When I was in high school, I was riding a bus downtown and working for The Me Nobody Knows at Salt City Playhouse. Syracuse Musical Theater, the Pompeian Players, people

They were screening (film director Walter Hill’s 1979 action drama) The Warriors somewhere and I was in that movie, so everybody starts posting on Facebook (the movie’s popular line of dialogue), “Come out, come out and

play.” I was in the Orphans gang and I used to come home to my apartment on 300 W. 55th St. in the morning after getting rolled through the mud in Central Park. But who knew it was going to be a cult movie?

I was in (director John Badham’s 1977 musical drama) Saturday Night Fever as a dancer for six weeks, and when we saw the screening we thought it was terrible. And also when we danced, we didn’t dance to the BeeGees’ tracks, we were dancing to tracks of beats because the score wasn’t done yet. We had no idea; we thought it was stupid.

Going to the 2001 Odyssey disco and being picked up every morning at 57th and Seventh Avenue on a bus, and then the dry cleaning would come out of your pants because of the disco’s dry ice . . . the whole thing was fascinating, especially in hindsight.

I benefited hugely from the British invasion of theater, everything from Amadeus to Song and Dance to (Broadway producer) Cameron Mackintosh. I benefited greatly from the crossing of the pond by the Brits. I was lucky, but I was also talented. But back in college, if I never studied music, I never could have been a stage manager, or an assistant director on Song and Dance. I do have to pinch myself a little because it happened to me so it’s not boasting, but I just can’t believe everything that I’ve done.

It’s ridiculous, it’s insane.

When I made my Broadway debut in 1979 in Zoot Suit, my parents came to the Winter Garden, where I saw my first Broadway show Mame and where Barbra Streisand did Funny Girl. And my parents said, “You can die now.”

Of course they didn’t mean that, I was only 22 or 23. So you’re talking to someone whose dreams have come true and more.

I had a whole Barbra Streisand wall in my (Solvay) bedroom. It was like a playroom, and there were (images of) Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler, Lauren Bacall and Liza Minnelli. How was it possible that I would be working with these people? I’m from Solvay, where everybody made fun of me: “Oooh, little Dickie wants to be on Broadway.”

And I learned about musicals from, thank god, the Solvay Public Library. They would call me and say, “Dickie, we got a new cast album. It’s called Rainbow with Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.” And I would run down to the library and slap on those big headphones. I know every word to every score because of the Solvay Library. Back in those days, cast albums told the story. You didn’t need the dialogue because the songs moved the action, and you imagined what the show looked like. Everyone had cast albums of Man of La Mancha or Mary Martin’s Sound of Music in their home.

My parents would go to see (Broadway shows) like South Pacific and my mother would say, “Dickie, it was so romantic and your father and I cried,” and I was hanging on their every word. And when I was 10, my dad started buying the Sunday New York Times and I would pore over the (theater) pages. It was beyond glamorous, and I knew there was a world outside of Syracuse and I had to face it.

As an educator, my dad recognized that you had to be passionate about something. I didn’t want to be an accountant or a lawyer or a doctor. My dad was a nervous wreck, so he applied his knowledge skills to my particular desires, but he wanted to make sure that I could make a living.

When the money started flowing, he knew I was gonna be OK. SNT

PROPOSED MAGAZINE GETS THE BUMS RUSH

According to the Studio Bums website, the phrase is “a slang term for someone who thrives on creating and being involved in all areas of the music industry, including culture, art, technology and the politics thereof.”

So creators Theodore Perry (a.k.a. Tedd Swell) and Annaliese Artemis (Perry) have created a brand that matches the name. The proposed Studio Bums will be a lifestyle publication and gear company based in Syracuse. The goal is to create a magazine that goes where others don’t, exploring parts of the industry that are often not discussed in mainstream publications.

“We had this realization,” Artemis says, “that all these magazines had the same people on the covers. Where’s the coverage? Where’s the exposure of new bands?

Those same people aren’t the only ones making good music. That’s where the spark started. We’ve been brainstorming what we could do that’s different.”

The couple’s backgrounds complement the goal. Artemis was born in South Africa and moved to Canada, providing her with a wealth of life experiences spanning riots in her hometown to a quiet life in Canada. Her eye for photography and art lends to the visual aspect of the publication and its products, which include mugs, clothing, hats and bags.

Swell hails from New York City and boasts a deejay resume that started when he was 13. He created the website onestopbeats.com, where producers such as Dr. Dre and Eminem could grab sounds for their music. Swell’s own music has been featured on TV shows including Cedric the Entertainer’s Barber Battle. His work with local artist Erika Lovette also helped earn her a Syracuse Area Music Award (Sammy) in the Best Rhythm and Blues category in 2014.

He also started beattalk.com, which provided a site for interviews with the producers, musicians and songwriters who frequented the domain. Although those sites have since dissolved, the idea of mixing culture and performers with discussion never went away.

“We knew certain stories weren’t being documented,” he says. “That’s our mission: to be a lot more in-depth.”

The magazine version will be published quarterly, but will remain a constant, vibrant presence on the Internet, drawing readers from around the world. The content will also draw from industry professionals. Grammy-nominated songwriter-producer Ivan “Orthodox” Barias and Jef Forston, a.k.a. Def Jef, are two examples of the arsenal of supporters, contributors and molders of the magazine.

“The music industry keeps changing,” Swell says. “The entry level is low. More people are doing it. Studio Bums will allow old guys to learn from new guys.

It’s changing out there: It’s the wild west.

Artists are tasked with so much. We will curate the content to bring value to anyone in the industry trying to survive.”

Swell and Artemis have even dubbed these musicians as “artistpreneurs.”

“Artists who are forced to do it all on their own are forced to be entrepreneurs as well,” Artemis says. “You have to do product development, cover art, advertising, setting up iTunes. You’re not assigned to a record label. You have to do it yourself.”

The magazine will address that scenario, mixing the glamour and reality of the music industry. And while the creators’ roots lie in hip-hop, the magazine will stretch beyond that genre.

“Hip-hop is my entry into the game,” Swell says. “It’s a culture I’m very familiar with. But I think it’s taught me about other genres, maybe more than if I’d come from another. My vinyl collection has many genres within it. We’re inspired by jazz and rock. There’s no limits to what we’re inspired by. We’ll have contributors who have worked with everyone from Erykah Badu to Steely Dan.” The couple is planning various promotions and funding campaigns in the coming months. They hope the first issue will run in early 2016.

“If you do music, this is something you’ll want to have as a tool,” Swell says. “It’s something that will help you along the way. If you’ve ever been to a music seminar, you’ll find value. That’s how we’re marketing it. It’s where you’re inspired and educated.” SNT

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) According to the

online etymological dictionary, the verb “fascinate” entered the English language in the 16th century. It was derived from the Middle French fasciner and the Latin fascinatus, which are translated as “bewitch, enchant, put under a spell.” In the 19th century, “fascinate” expanded in meaning to include “delight, attract, hold the attention of.” I suspect you will soon have experiences that could activate both senses of “fascinate.” My advice is to get the most out of your delightful attractions without slipping into bewitchment. TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) One of the largest machines in the world is a “bucket wheel excavator” in Kazakhstan. It’s a saw that weighs 45,000 tons and has a blade the size of a four-story building.
