Jamie L. Gordon, 30, told police she was “struck in the head with a bowling ball” by a robber, who took $2,100 from the safe at the bowling alley where she worked in Decatur, Ill. When the manager arrived and gave permission to view the surveillance video, Officer James Weddle observed Gordon pick up a bowling ball and “strike herself twice in the back, left side of her head,” then drop to the floor, where she remained for 13 minutes until another employee found her. Confronted with the evidence, Gordon admitted taking the money and gambling away most of it on the bowling alley’s slot machines before conking herself on the head “to make it look like she had been robbed.” (Decatur’s Herald-Review)

Numbers Racket

As mobile devices hog telephone numbers, new area codes created to meet mathematical demand are causing old ones to become status symbols, for which some people are willing to pay. And others are selling. Ed Mance, who operates PhoneNumberGuy.com, buys numbers in bulk from companies that no longer need them. He sells them for between $299 and $799, although his biggest sale was a “nine-of-a-kind” number for $95,000. Mance notes that the area code most in demand is Los Angeles’ 310, whose numbers are the hardest to secure. Many of Mance’s customers are less interested in the area code than the numbers around them, including ones that spell out words. “HURT and PAIN are the two most in-demand numbers,” Mance said, because they’re coveted by personalinjury lawyers. White supremacists and anti-government radicals have killed more people in the United States since Sept. 11, 2001, than Muslim jihadists have, according to Washington research center New America. The score: 48 to 26. New America program associate David Sterman warned that white supremacy and anti-government idealism constitute an “ignored threat” because the government has focused its surveillance and data collection efforts instead on domestic Islamic extremists. Role Model: Yankee ace pitcher CC Sabathia entered rehab for a drinking problem while his team was still playoff-eligible.

MCNABB FUMBLES TEACHABLE MOMENT

Y

ou can’t really say anything bad about Donovan McNabb in this town without catching grief. But last month when the former Syracuse University quarterback, humanitarian, NFL standout and all-around good guy visited Syracuse, he had a chance to make a difference. And he blew it big time. In football when you blow a call, you let your team down. You might mess with everyone’s fantasy league, but by Monday morning everyone is looking to the next week, and all is forgiven. It’s a game. But this one is real life. Donovan McNabb isn’t talking Xs and Os, he’s talking life and death. A reporter asked McNabb about his two arrests for drunk driving in the past couple of years. The QB said that it wasn’t a problem. What a disappointment. We have a society drowning in alcohol and addiction, and when we have a prominent person who decides to practice denial in such a blatant way, it’s a setback. How bad is this? Really bad. With one simple statement, Donovan McNabb declared himself a public health menace. Remember when Jacob Zuma, the South African president, said that he would shower after having sex with prostitutes to keep from contracting HIV? It’s that kind of bad. Fox Sports seemed to think it was a problem. They dumped McNabb from their roster of commentators and publicly requested he get help for his problem.

So it got you arrested twice and it cost you a job — and it’s not a problem? That’s what treatment specialists call denial. Just a personal matter, you say? Drinking is a personal choice — agreed. Driving a car while drunk means it’s no longer personal. Donovan, you had twice the maximum legal amount of booze in your blood when the cop stopped you in Gilbert, Ariz., back in June. The person in the car you rear-ended at the red light emerged uninjured. That’s fortunate. But it is a problem. On any given day, 28 people die in the United States because someone, just like you, decide to get drunk and drive a car. Full disclosure: I was nearly one of those people. After a drunk piloting a Grand Prix on an Arizona highway hit my Pinto head-on a few years back, I spent three weeks in the hospital. He walked away; I nearly died. So yeah, you’re right, it’s personal. Not a problem? Over the course of a year, drunk driving costs us nearly $200 billion. These numbers come from the

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Well, you might think, it was just bad luck. Stop. Please. According to the same national agency, a typical driver arrested for DWI has driven drunk 80 times before getting busted. Not a problem? Donovan, two drunk driving arrests in a year is a problem. It’s more than that. In New York state, it’s actually a felony. You’re lucky you were in Arizona. You’re lucky you’re a well-off celebrity. You have every advantage. You can get a lawyer. You could have called a cab. No doubt you’d like this to disappear. No doubt your fans will attack this writer for trying to make sure that it doesn’t. Like it or not, you are a public figure with a high profile, and as such you have a platform. Don’t use it to spew nonsense. Use it to help the millions of people, young and old, who struggle with the same problem. You must be aware of the Herculean efforts of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. They work tirelessly and lovingly to change public attitudes and laws about the crime that put you in Maricopa County Jail. You have to know how high school teachers and principals dread the weeks around prom and graduation as they wait in anxious anticipation for the inevitable news of young people pulled from wrecks that reek of alcohol. I’ll bet that you’ve even donated, kind heart that you are, to high schools that host “after the prom” parties designed to lure our kids into safe spaces and keep them off the roads. You’re a smart guy. You have to know that denial is the oxygen that helps the drug and alcohol abuse epidemic grow. Bursting the balloon of denial can put you on a path to deal with the problem. Because now it’s not a personal problem. You just set all those folks back. But you can change that. Time to reset. Start over, Donovan. It’s a problem. SNT

SNOW GUIDE

QUICK TAKE

Syracuse averages about 118 inches of snow each season. Fulton, however, goes for the gusto with nearly 180 inches of lake-effect winter weather.

B y J . T. H a l l

FLAKE OUT ON THE SLOPES

Amid the threat of a warming planet, Central New York experienced consistently cold temperatures and regular snowfall during the 2014-2015 winter, a perfect scenario for Nordic and alpine skiers alike. Although seasonal weather predictions are basically guesswork, winter sports enthusiasts are nonetheless hopeful that the 2015-2016 season will provide plenty of opportunities as well. Forever optimistic but weather dependent, the local alpine ski centers — namely Toggenburg, Song Mountain, Labrador, Greek Peak, Snow Ridge and Four Seasons — are busy preparing for the coming season, and consolidation is the buzzword. Reflecting the economic realities of the risky ski business, Toggenburg, located on Route 80 in Fabius, has been acquired by Greek Peak, the resort in Virgil, near Cortland. This union will offer seasonpass holders at Toggenburg (520-foot vertical drop, 21 trails, two terrain parks), the option of skiing at the larger Greek Peak (952-foot vertical drop, 38 trails, three terrain parks) and vice versa for the price of one season pass. This is a windfall especially for Toggenburg skiers, since season passes there start at $370 (prior to Dec. 1), where at Greek Peak the price is $649. In addition, Toggenburg offers free season passes to anyone age 70 and over. And Greek Peak has a Nordic Center for skiers, snowshoers and fat bikes. Complete information on these deals is available at skitog.com or greekpeakmtnresort.com. Not to be left out, Song Mountain (songmountain.com), off Interstate 81’s Exit 14 in Tully, and Labrador Mountain (labradormtn.com) on Route 91 in Truxton have combined to offer an “Intermountain Passport,” good at either site. Season passes at Song (700-foot vertical drop, 24 trails, five lifts, no terrain park) begin at $406 prior to Dec. 1, as they are at Labrador (700-foot vertical drop, 22 trails, six lifts, no terrain park). In addition, the “Intermountain Passport” is good for two complimentary lift tickets at Okemo Mountain (okemo.com), the much larger resort (2,200-foot vertical drop, 121 trails, 20 lifts, eight terrain parks) in Ludlow, Vt.

Chasing Shadows.

Heading north into the notorious Tug Hill lake effect snow belt, the aptly named Snow Ridge (snowridge.com) in Turin is in the right place at the right time. A modestly sized hill (500-foot vertical drop, 22 trails, six lifts, terrain park), Snow Ridge boasts an average snowfall of 230-plus inches and is usually open by Thanksgiving. Season passes start at $395 prior to Dec. 1. Closer to home, Four Seasons Golf and Ski (fourseasons golfandski.com) on Route 5 east of Fayetteville offers a “great place to learn to ski and have some fun,” according to owner John Goodfellow. With an imposing vertical drop of 100 feet, the area offers new snowmaking capabilities, a chairlift and a conveyor (a.k.a. “magic carpet”), trails for snowboard tricksters, snow tubing and six trails. Once dubbed “the smallest ski area in America,” a title it has apparently ceded to another area in the Catskills, Four Seasons offers a season pass for a mere $165. For Nordic skiers, the weather is more of a factor, since snowmaking is not an option. Local opportunities abound, however, when conditions permit. Local parks, including Green Lakes State Park (Route 5, Fayetteville, nysparks.com), offer trails for skiing and snowshoeing. Onondaga County parks (onondagacountyparks.com) including Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville, Oneida Shores on Oneida Lake, and Highland Forest in Fabius also offer similar options. Highland Forest, especially, is a premium winter destination, featuring 40 miles of trails, 20 of them groomed, as well as three loops for skating skiers. Admission and/or trail fees apply at most of these areas. Let it snow.

It’s Miller Time Again

A sure sign that winter is near: The annual cinematic ski spectacle from Warren Miller Entertainment has already been booked. Chasing Shadows, the 66th winter sports flick from the company, will play Wednesday, Nov. 25, 7:30 p.m., at the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St. While auteur Miller has retired from the ski scene, Chasing Shadows will likely follow the similar template established by the previous 65 entries. So expect plenty of globetrotting gonzo thrills as skiers and snowboarders comb the planet in search of the perfect schussing experience, all accompanied by a throbbing rock soundtrack that won’t let audiences snooze. Alaska’s Chugach range and the Himalayas are some of the scenic stops for wax maniacs such as Caroline Gleich, Steven Nyman and J.T. Holmes. Admission is $17. Call 475-7979 for information. SNT

COMING DISTRACTIONS Amid pesky NCAA penalties and unproven players, the SU basketball team just wants to look forward By Matt Michael After a season that ended in March Sadness instead of March Madness, fans of the Syracuse University basketball team can at least look forward to the possibility that the Orange will return to the NCAA Tournament next March. But it won’t be easy. This season’s edition of the Orange is down to nine scholarship players, including three freshmen, and facing a challenging schedule. And Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim is suspended by the NCAA for the first nine Atlantic Coast Conference games (unless he wins an appeal and the suspension is reduced). No wonder the Orange is nowhere to be found in the preseason polls, and was picked to finish ninth in the ACC in the ACC Media Poll. “Every year’s new and every team is different so it really doesn’t matter about expectations and ratings,” said Boeheim, who is entering his 40th year as SU’s coach. “We haven’t been (highly) rated before and had very successful years in more years than one. Just look forward and see what we do to be a better team this year.” Certainly Boeheim does not want to look back at last season, which started under the cloud of an NCAA investigation and ended with a self-imposed postseason ban and unprecedented NCAA penalties. To recap: Following a multiyear investigation into SU’s athletic program, the NCAA suspended Boeheim for nine ACC games, took away 12 scholarships (three a year for four years), and ordered 108 wins vacated from the basketball records, dropping Boeheim’s win total from 966 (second all-time) to 858 (sixth all-time). The 94-page report by the NCAA Committee on Infractions said the violations, which dated to 2001 and were self-reported by Syracuse, involved academic misconduct, extra benefits, fail11.11.15 - 11.17.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

ure to follow the school’s drug-testing policy, and impermissible booster activity. Boeheim and SU asked for a reduction of their penalties in hearings before the NCAA’s Infractions Appeals Committee, so that will be a major storyline as this season plays out. As the Orange prepares for the 7 p.m. season opener on Friday, Nov. 13, against Lehigh University at the Carrier Dome, here are five key questions about this year’s team as it seeks to return to the NCAA Tournament: Is There Enough Depth? In some years, Boeheim went only seven deep, so having only nine scholarship players is not necessarily a problem. But one of those players, junior center DaJuan Coleman, has appeared in only 37 games the past three years because of major knee injuries. Another one, sophomore point guard Kaleb Joseph, went from a starting job to Boeheim’s doghouse last season. And a third player, junior Chinonso Obokoh, is from Nigeria and still learning what it takes to play at the Division I level. In case you’re wondering about the other players, guard Ron Patterson and forward B.J. Johnson transferred after last season, incoming freshman big man Moustapha Diagne didn’t enroll because of an eligibility issue, and 7-foot-2 center Paschal Chukwa must sit out this season after transferring from Providence. All of which makes it imperative that the three freshmen — starting small forward Malachi Richardson, backup guard Frank Howard and backup forward Tyler Lydon — contribute from the get-go. This is a talented group: Remember when Boeheim called this recruiting class one of the best he has ever had? “Honestly, I’m impressed with all three of them,” said junior power forward Tyler Roberson. “I’ve played with (Malachi)

Richardson in high school so I knew he was a good player already. But Tyler (Lydon) and Frank (Howard) are good players, too. So I think they’ll all be able to contribute.” Will Coleman Hold Up? Without Diagne, Obokoh is the only other true big man besides the 6-foot-9, 255-pound Coleman. The Orange will not be able to absorb Coleman’s loss this season the way they did in previous years when Rakeem Christmas, Baye Moussa Keita and Chris McCullough were on the roster. Boeheim said Coleman hasn’t missed any time in practice and predicted Coleman would be “one of the premier shot blockers in college basketball.” In SU’s easy exhibition wins against Division II teams Le Moyne and Florida Southern, Coleman scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in 44 minutes. “Obviously, if you don’t play in two years you’re going to be a little rusty, but he’s up and down the court,” Boeheim said. “We haven’t rested him. We haven’t changed anything. We haven’t made anything easy. He’s in at practice every day, full speed.” How Will Gbinije Handle the Point? Graduate senior guard Michael Gbinije started last season as SU’s sixth man and ended it as the Orange’s starting point guard as Boeheim lost confidence in Joseph. It appears Gbinije will be the primary point guard this year, although Joseph has looked much better and Gbinije can also play shooting guard and small forward. Last season, Gbinije led the team in assists (3.6 per game) and ranked third in scoring (12.7 points per game). In the games against Le Moyne and Florida Southern, he led the Orange with 35 points on 11-for-21 shooting with nine assists and four turnovers. Gbinije will team with graduate senior shooting guard Trevor Cooney (13.4 points per game last season) to form a veteran backcourt that will serve as the focal point of a perimeter-based offense that will rely heavily on 3-pointers. Against Le Moyne and Florida Southern, the Orange shot 43 percent from 3-point range (26-for61). “We think that’s going to be the key to how successful we’re going to be. If we’re shooting a lot of 3s and make them, we’re going to be good,” Boeheim said. “If we don’t make a lot of them, it’s going to be a problem.” Can They Win Enough Games to Make the NCAA Tournament? The Orange can be very good this year and still not win 20 games, which usually guarantees a NCAA Tournament bid. SU’s non-conference schedule includes Connecticut or Michigan and perhaps Gonzaga in the Battle 4 Atlantis Thanksgiving tournament in the Bahamas; Wisconsin at the Dome in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge Dec. 2; and old nemesis Georgetown on the road Dec. 5. The ACC schedule includes road games against six of the top seven teams in the Media Poll. “So we’re playing four of the top five or six teams in the league on the road,” Boeheim said at ACC Media Day, referring to North Carolina, Virginia, Duke and Louisville. “That could mean the difference between 10-8 and 9-9 or 7-11 instead of 10-8.” What Will Be the Impact of Boeheim’s Suspension? Unless Boeheim wins his appeal, he’ll miss the first half of the ACC schedule that includes road games at Pittsburgh, Miami, Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia, and home games against Clemson, North Carolina, Boston College and Notre Dame. Boeheim said at ACC Media Day that if the Orange falters during his absence, it won’t be assistant coach Mike Hopkins’ fault. “It’s not his team, it’s my team,” Boeheim said. “If they lose, it’s because I didn’t coach them right. It’s not because he didn’t coach them right.” Judging from preseason predictions, many college basketball observers around the country are expecting the Orange to be so-so with or without Boeheim. For their part, the SU players enjoy the prospect of proving them wrong. “Flying under the radar is definitely fine with me,” Cooney said. “We have a lot of good games and a lot of opportunities to beat a lot of great teams. I think this team can be just as good as our teams in the past that have been successful.” SNT

SIT DOWN DINNER AT THE CASTLE

A cast member of SU Drama’s Agamemnon. Michael Davis photo

GREECE IS THE WORD

The Syracuse University Drama Department’s rendition of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon probably bears little resemblance to what the Athenians must have seen enacted at the Theater of Dionysius some 2,500 years ago. Yet the ancient Greeks might have enjoyed this vivid, colorful interpretation, which runs through Sunday, Nov. 15, at Syracuse Stage’s Storch Theater. Director Rodney Hudson has pulled out all the stops in re-enacting the long-awaited return of victorious Agamemnon (the excellent Alen Ghavami) from Troy to his scheming wife Clytemnestra (O Candide-Johnson). Hudson and his talented cast take every opportunity to convert the verses chanted by the chorus into visual scenes. As the chorus, led by faculty members Leslie Noble and Kathleen Baum, describe the battle outside the walls of Troy, we witness the carnage, choreographed by Anthony Salatino. As they describe the long sea voyage home, we see a clever semblance of a ship cross the stage. As we hear about the killing of Iphigenia (Kara Cooper), the daughter Agamemnon has sacrificed to the gods, we see the girl desperately trying to escape by climbing a wall. It’s not quite Agamemnon: The Musical, but this production is certainly filled with music and dance-like movement. The townspeople of Argos give their victorious king a clamorous homecoming, as they dance with joy, form a circle and

beat their hands on the ground. Cassandra (Erin Christine Walsh), the captive Trojan princess Agamemnon has brought back from the wars, whirls with chains flying from the collar about her neck before going into her prophetic trance. The galvanizing drum beat of Emmett Van Slyke’s music is performed in real time from a console at the side of the stage, synchronized with every movement made by the cast. A continual, almost subliminal low hum increases the tension. While Medea is usually the character in Greek drama celebrated by feminists as a woman who takes control of her fate in a male-dominated world, Clytemnestra emerges in this production as an impressive woman of great strength. In ancient Greece she would have been played by a man in a mask. As played here by the regal, sultry-voiced O Candide-Johnson, it’s little wonder she has the power to lure Agamemnon into tempting the gods by walking up the much-too-elegant purple carpet — to his death. She’s the one who heads off a revolt by hushing up her arrogant lover, Aegisthus (Jerrod Everett), and shooing him back into the palace. And once she has avenged her daughter’s murder, it is Clytemnestra who calls for an end to the cycle of vengeance that plagues the family. Her plea is in vain, but that’s the story of another play. The Action!

MAD WAX FROM THE ACTION!

I

t takes a lot to keep a band together, especially for 17 years. The Action! has not only kept the same core of five in place the entire time, they’re still seeking new ways to play, record and release music.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m., the band will issue their first vinyl record, the seven-inch EP Monumental Instrumentals, during a release party at Upstairs at the Dinosaur, 246 W. Willow St. The four-track all-instrumental record is the product of a partnership with local label L.R.S. Records, which has worked with bands including Bridge Under Fire, Shore Acres Drive, Bleak, The Nudes and more. Mike Gibson, lead singer and guitarist of The Action!, knew L.R.S. founder Mark Turley and got in touch. “I noticed he was doing something that I share a passion about,” Gibson says. “I contacted him to help with the label, not with my band, but just because I wanted to see him succeed. They were really small, but started getting off the ground. Then we started talking about a record for The Action! and I had the idea to put it out on vinyl.” Gibson notes he had to convince his other band members — Chris Nolan, Craig Chamberlain, Adam Carkey and Dan King — to make that vinyl leap of faith. “I’ve always been a fan of vinyl and listened to my parents’ collection,” Gibson says. “People think it’s

out of date. It’s not the main way people get music, but it’s been making a comeback the past few years. For me, it’s exciting. There’s something about holding a physical piece of music in your hand. Music isn’t a tangible art form. It’s in your ear, in your head. To hold the source of that art form is important to me.” The Action! recorded the four tracks earlier this year at Hobin Studios and went to L.R.S. to help with pressing and production of the album. Although Gibson noticed a trend in bands associated with L.R.S., he was pleasantly surprised to learn that label co-founders Turley and Nick Oliver shared open minds about their genre of music. “We weren’t sure they’d be interested in our music; it’s poppy with horns,” Gibson says. “But they were adamant about being the type of label that puts out music of all genres, not just punk or hard rock. They’ll be just as eager to put out an album by a great jazz band or hip-hop or reggae band.” The Action! blends traces of jazz, rock, pop and punk in their music. “A lot of people see or hear a horn section and think, ‘Oh, they’re a ska band,’” Gibson says. “We don’t want to run away from that,

but we’re certainly more than that. If you see us live, we play everything from ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’ to Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ and our original music spans those genres as well. We don’t limit ourselves to one genre or want to be pigeonholed.” Fittingly, the vinyl platters match the band’s colorful mix of genres. The records will be decorated with mixes of yellow, purple, pink and red. Some will have a marble look while others will have streaks of colors spattered through the grooves. “Every record is different,” Gibson promises. Each album also comes with a download code of the four tracks plus two Action! favorites, “Amy” and “I’m Gonna Beat Up Your Boyfriend.” Regarding the latter tune, Gibson says with a chuckle, “You always get a good reaction with a song title like that.” And for those curious about the instrumentals, at least one is well known among fans: “Butterman Rubdown,” from the group’s 2008 Syracuse Area Music Award (Sammy)-winning album Exploding Radio. “I always laugh about that,” Gibson says. “The category that year was ‘Metal/ Alternative’ and we won. So I say we won Best Metal Album of 2008 and then we went and played some poppy horn music.” SNT

WREMBEL’S DJANGO-STYLE JAZZ TO FILL THE ODEON

French guitarist Stephane Wrembel’s sound is instantly familiar, especially its clear resemblance to Django Reinhardt (1910-1953), one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Although Reinhardt is recognized for his contributions to European or gypsy jazz, Wrembel doesn’t care for those titles. “I never use the word(s) gypsy jazz,” he says, “because I know what jazz is: It’s an American type of music based on improvisation. This is definitely not jazz. And gypsy is like saying ‘European.’ But there are different kinds of gypsies. It’s not gypsies who play flamenco. That’s not what it is. Django’s music is unique, completely different. And Django is the grandmaster: He is like Bach on guitar.” Wrembel has extensively studied the musical style, including visits to gypsy camps throughout the French countryside. “Music is always the soundtrack for something,” he says. “For gypsy music, you need to know the people: how they live, how they do it, their environment.” Wrembel will make his third visit to the Nelson Odeon, 4035 Nelson Road, Nelson, with two separate weekend performances. On Friday, Nov. 13, 8 p.m., the guitarist will focus on Reinhardt’s music. His 8 p.m. show on Saturday, Nov. 14, will feature his own compositions. Also on Saturday, Wrembel will present a 3:30 p.m. workshop, “Django Reinhardt Jazz Guitar Technique,” which will not be for just guitar players. “I’ll talk about ways to improvise and to practice,” he emphasizes. “I’ll also talk specifically about rhythm in that style and people will improvise. There will be something for everyone on every level, any instrument.” Wrembel was already a professional working musician with his own music school in France before he attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he studied jazz and Indian music. He graduated summa cum laude in music performance in 2002. “I was there gathering information, not music,” he says. “Information is not alive (like music). In university, you don’t re-

16

Stephane Wrembel. Michael Weintrob photo

ally learn anything. You get information. It’s only when you are in reality that you learn. With the gypsies in the camps, you learn music that is related to life. That’s a completely different thing.” When Wrembel moved to New York City following graduation, the first thing he did was perform Reinhardt’s music. “It (the music) was a living thing,” he says. “I had been with the gypsies for so many years. No one was doing that (kind of music) in the states then, so I chose to start with that. “I started practicing more stuff, going out, composing and really using that life experience to give birth to something true to my whole experience: being French, an immigrant. I had studied so many artists and styles. The whole thing needed to blend and become something meaningful and real.” The result is a series of albums that experiment with the Django style: Introducing Stephane Wrembel (2001; reissued in 2010), Barbes-Brooklyn (2006), Gypsy Rumble (2008), Terre des Hommes (2008), Bistro Fada (2011), Origins (2012) and Dreamers of Dreams (2014). Wrembel was also featured on the soundtrack for director Woody Allen’s 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona and he composed the theme track for Allen’s 2011 film Midnight in Paris. Wrembel now tours the world to share his music and Reinhardt’s. When he’s not traveling, he’s often playing in New York City with his band, who will accompany him at the Nelson Odeon. His one regret is not having more time to practice.

11.11.15 - 11.17.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

“I don’t practice as much as I want to,” he says, “but I practiced a lot for many years. Music is like martial arts: There are different layers of consciousness. The masters of Indian music play 15 hours a day. They get into a trance mode. If you don’t practice enough, you can’t get into that mode. If you think about money and material things too much, you can’t get into that mode. Music is a spiritual experience. When you play, you penetrate the different layers.” Reinhardt’s guitar gifts become even more impressive in the context of the musician’s daunting physical challenges. The guitarist suffered severe burns in a 1928 fire that left his fourth and fifth fingers paralyzed, forcing him to use only his index and middle fingers on his left hand for solos. “What’s puzzling with Django is not the hands,” Wrembel says of Reinhardt’s injury. “It’s more the rhythms he used. They were highly unconventional. He was that much of a genius, that even with the two little fingers, we can study all the positioning on the guitar because of him. It’s his timing and everything. It’s more than the fingers. That’s a minor factor in his music.” SNT

LADIES DEMAND MORE RESPECT

When Aretha Franklin released her rendition of Otis Redding’s “Respect” in 1967, she transformed the track from a tired man’s plea for his lady’s attention into an anthem for feminism that would find its way into Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” That heritage shines through in the lineup for the second annual “Respect: Central New York Celebrates Women in Music” concert, taking place Friday, Nov. 13, 7 p.m., at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre. Local female musicians, plus a few men as “special guests” on the roster, will pay homage to the women who inspired their musical careers. Last year’s concert was the brainchild of Joanna Jewett, director of marketing, communications and public relations at the Centers for St. Camillus health and rehabilitation center. Jewett is a musician in her own right, having performed in Central New York for more than 25 years. “There’s something really magical about blending voices and spirits together in a way that’s all about the music and all about supporting each other,” said Jewett. “It’s just been a really, really neat thing to see and experience.” Jewett’s current outfits include the acoustic trio The Mix Tapes and the group Funkadelphia, which will serve as the house band at Respect. She spoke about a sisterhood that emerged after last year’s event, leading to new collaborations and, in some cases, new friendships. That sisterhood came to the forefront last January when Respect alumna Donna Colton was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a glandular cancer manifesting in malignant tumors throughout her body. In Colton’s case, it was a cancer of the sweat gland. After a months-long parade of MRIs, sonograms, surgeons and oncologists, Colton broke the news on Facebook with a GoFundMe page, prompting Jewett to team up with fellow musician Julie Briggs to organize a benefit concert, aptly named Donnapalooza. Colton underwent radiation therapy, specifically tomotherapy, at the SUNY Upstate Medical University’s cancer center. She lost her hair in the process and the treatment weakened her immune system, but the gratitude and positivity in

her demeanor disguise the struggle of the past year. “I’m excited to have made it through another year,” said Colton, who spoke enthusiastically about performing at Friday’s concert. “I totally expect it to be a sellout crowd, because everybody that saw it (last year) just talked to everybody else and said, ‘Oh, you’ve got to go. You’ve got to see this!’” Joanne Perry, Ashley Cox and Robyn Stockdale were three of 18 women who performed at last year’s concert, covering everyone from Billie Holiday and Etta James to Dolly Parton and Alanis Morissette — and Aretha, of course. This year, guests will hear the music of Tori Amos, the Pointer Sisters, Adele and a slew of Motown, jazz and rhythm’n’blues tunes from the 1940s through the 2000s. Perry, Cox and Stockdale will return, joined by Anna Vogel, Maureen Henesey, Lisa Romano, Leila Dean, Miss E, Marcia Hagan,

Carolyn Kelly, Terry Kohut, Nancy Kelly, Letizia, Sue Royal, Kim Monroe, Moe Harrington, Kate Kolb, Sarah Hiltbrand, Kat Dooley-Wandersee and the Syracuse New Times’ own Jessica Novak. Proceeds from the concert will be used to replace the two main elevators at St. Camillus, which Jewett said are vital in caring for their mostly geriatric patients. Last year, Respect brought in more than $8,100 for the healthcare facility, a number that Jewett hopes will only increase. Colton still sees her doctors for follow-up treatments, but she hasn’t allowed the cancer to stop her music. “I’m just glad to be involved in it again,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the show, for sure.” SNT

The new documentary Jaco, which chronicles the legacy of the late jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, will receive its Northeastern premiere on Friday, Nov. 27, 8 p.m., at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St. The screening is a communitywide collaboration with the Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest, the Syracuse International Film Festival, the Palace and Armory Square’s Sound Garden music outlet. Jaco executive producer Robert Trujillo, who also plays bass with longtime rock outfit Metallica, will make a 2 p.m. in-store appearance at Sound Garden during its National Record Store Day festivities. (Vinyl will be celebrated, including LPs of the Jaco soundtrack, as well as picture discs, seven-inch singles and more.) Trujillo will sign DVD and BluRay copies of Jaco, which also goes on sale that day, with a ticket giveaway for the screening taking place. Trujillo will also introduce that evening’s showing at the Palace. For details, visit cdjoint. com/upcoming-events.cfm. “Jaco was the world’s greatest bass player. Period,” said Syracuse Jazz Fest founder Frank Malfitano. “He was to the bass what Jimi Hendrix was to the guitar. Revolutionary. Groundbreaking. Never equaled. A major influence on everyone from Sting to Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and everyone who ever picked up a bass. Jaco was a game changer. We dedicated Syracuse Jazz Fest 25 to him, and later that same year (2007) I had the great honor of emceeing a major tribute to him at the Broward Center in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale. It was a special evening that took place on the 20th anniversary of his sad and tragic passing and it was the single greatest honor of my career in the national music industry. “But seeing him on stage 20 times topped all of that. He was simply the greatest. For me, and for many, his recordings with Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny and Weather Report, in addition to his solo albums and big band projects, made him the most important musician of the last half of the 20th century. I know some of the jazzers think they own him, but Jaco was a rock star!”

FREE WILL A STROLOGY by Rob Brezsny

ARIES. (March 21-April 19) “I demand unconditional love and complete freedom,” wrote Slovenian poet Tomaz Salamun. “That is why I am terrible.” In accordance with the astrological omens, I’m offering you the chance, at least temporarily, to join Salamun in demanding unconditional love and complete freedom. But unlike him, you must satisfy one condition: Avoid being terrible. Can you do that? I think so, although you will have to summon unprecedented amounts of emotional intelligence and collaborative ingenuity.

TAURUS. (April 20-May 20) You have the answers you need, but you keep sniffing around as if there were different or better answers to be had. Moreover, you’ve been offered blessings that could enable you to catalyze greater intimacy, but you’re barely taking advantage of them -- apparently because you underestimate their potency. Here’s what I think: As long as you neglect the gifts you have already been granted, they won’t provide you with their full value. If you give them your rapt appreciation, they will bloom. GEMINI. (May 21-June 20) Edgar Rice Bur-

roughs (1875-1950) tried to earn a living by selling pencil sharpeners, but couldn’t make it. In frustration, he turned to writing novels. Success! Among his many popular novels, 27 of them were about a fictional character named Tarzan. The actor who played Tarzan in the movies based on Burroughs’ books was Johnny Weissmuller. As a child, he suffered from polio, and rebuilt his strength by becoming a swimmer. He eventually won five Olympic gold medals. Burroughs and Weissmuller are your role models in the coming weeks, Gemini. It’s a favorable time for you to turn defeat into victory.

CANCER. (June 21-July 22) Artist Andy Warhol

had an obsession with green underpants. In fact, that’s all he ever wore beneath his clothes. It might be fun and productive for you to be inspired by his private ritual. Life is virtually conspiring to ripen your libido, stimulate your fertility, and expedite your growth. So anything you do to encourage these cosmic tendencies could have an unusually dramatic impact. Donning green undies might be a good place to start. It would send a playful message to your subconscious mind that you are ready and eager to bloom.

LEO. (July 23-Aug. 22) In the coming weeks,

take special notice of the jokes and humorous situations that prompt you to laugh the loudest. They will provide important clues about the parts of your life that need liberation. What outmoded or irrelevant taboos should you consider breaking? What inhibitions are dampening your well-being? How might your conscience be overstepping its bounds and making you unnecessarily constrained? Any time you roar with spontaneous amusement, you will know you have touched a congested place in your psyche that is due for a cleansing.

VIRGO. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) For each of the last 33 years, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles has selected a “National Hero Dog.” It’s an award given to a canine that has shown exceptional courage in helping or rescuing people. In 2015, the group departed from tradition. Its “National Hero Dog” is a female cat named Tara. Last May, she saved a 4-year-old boy by scaring off a dog that had begun to attack him. I’m guessing you will soon have an experience akin to Tara’s. Maybe you’ll make a gutsy move that earns you an unexpected honor. Maybe you’ll carry out a dramatic act of compassion that’s widely appreciated. Or maybe you’ll go outside your comfort zone to pull off a noble feat that elevates your reputation. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) According to cartoon

character Homer Simpson, “Trying is the first step toward failure.” I don’t agree with that comic advice. But I do think the following variant will be applicable to you in the coming weeks: “Trying too hard is the first step toward failure.”

22

So please don’t try too hard, Libra! Overexertion should be taboo. Straining and struggling would not only be unnecessary, but counterproductive. If you want to accomplish anything worthwhile, make sure that your default emotion is relaxed confidence. Have faith in the momentum generated by all the previous work you have done to arrive where you are now.

SCORPIO. (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Elsie de Wolfe

(1859-1950) was a pioneer in the art of interior design. She described herself as “a rebel in an ugly world.” Early in her career she vowed, “I’m going to make everything around me beautiful,” and she often did just that. In part through her influence, the dark, cluttered decor of the Victorian Era, with its bulky draperies and overly ornate furniture, gave way to rooms with brighter light, softer colors and more inviting textures. I’d love to see you be inspired by her mission, Scorpio. It’s a good time to add extra charm, grace and comfort to your environments.

SAGITTARIUS. (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) At age 36, author Franz Kafka composed a 47-page letter to his father Herman. As he described the ways that his dad’s toxic narcissism and emotional abuse had skewed his maturation process, he refrained from lashing out with histrionic anger. Instead he focused on objectively articulating the facts, recounting events from childhood and analyzing the family dynamic. In accordance with the astrological omens, I recommend that you write a letter to your own father -- even if it’s filled with praise and gratitude instead of complaint. At this juncture in your life story, I think you especially need the insights that this exercise would generate. (P.S.: Write the letter for your own sake, not with the hope of changing or hurting or pleasing your dad. You don’t have to give it to him.) CAPRICORN. (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Shizo Kanakuri

was one of Japan’s top athletes when he went to compete in the marathon race at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Partway through the event, fatigued by sweltering heat, bad food and the long journey he’d made to get there, Kanakuri passed out. He recovered with the help of a local farmer, but by then the contest was over. Embarrassed by his failure, he sneaked out of Sweden and returned home. Fast-forward to 1966. Producers of a TV show tracked him down and invited him to resume what he’d started. He agreed. At age 74, he completed the marathon, finishing with a time of 54 years, eight months. I think it’s time to claim your own personal version of this opportunity, Capricorn. Wouldn’t you love to resolve a process that got interrupted?

AQUARIUS. (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) In most sporting events, there’s never any doubt about which competitor is winning. Each step of the way, the participants and spectators know who has more points or goals or runs. But one sport isn’t like that. In a boxing match, no one is aware of the score until the contest is finished -- not even the boxers themselves. I think you’re in a metaphorically comparable situation. You won’t find out the final tally or ultimate decision until the “game” is complete. Given this uncertainty, I suggest that you don’t slack off even a little. Keep giving your best until the very end. PISCES. (Feb. 19-March 20) One night as you

lie sleeping in your bed, you will dream of flying through the sunny summer sky. The balmy air will be sweet to breathe. Now and then you will flap your arms like wings, but mostly you will glide effortlessly. The feeling that flows through your body will be a blend of exhilaration and ease. Anywhere you want to go, you will maneuver skillfully to get there. After a while, you will soar to a spot high above a scene that embodies a knotty problem in your waking life. As you hover and gaze down, you will get a clear intuition about how to untie the knots. Whether or not you remember this dream, the next day you will work some practical magic that begins to shrink or dissolve the problem.
