“Special thanks for Margaret McCormick’s upbeat and informative article on the Brooklyn Pickle “sandwich shop.” Since 1977 the Brooklyn Pickle has been a landmark eating place of the far West Side-Tipp Hill neighborhood of Syracuse. For decades Ken Sniper has done an outstanding job of serving high-quality food to his customers at his two shop locations even as he continually improved the buildings where they were located. Mr. Sniper has thrived in his business with the help of Craig Kowadla. The Brooklyn Pickle is a fine example of excellence in eating.” — Robert L. Oberst

Homeland Insecurity Litigation Nation
Besides not recognizing 67 out of 70 test violations of airport security checkpoints during a recent exercise, the Transportation Security Administration failed to identify 73 airport workers potentially associated with terrorism. Former acting TSA administrator Melvin Carraway denied the Department of Homeland Security’s finding that the TSA missed potential threats, insisting, “The term ‘missed’ is inaccurate, in that it implies a fault with the TSA vetting system or manual review process, which is not the case.” (USA Today)
Anna Goldshmidt and Elan Stratiyevsky demanded that New York City’s Waldorf Astoria hotel return the money they paid for their wedding there or risk a lawsuit. The couple contends the hotel cut short the event because a guest at the reception accidentally fired a gun, grazing a woman in the head. Lawyer Benjamin Brafman said the couple is also considering suing the guest. A hotel official said the reception was canceled immediately after the shooting due to safety concerns. (Associated Press)
Drone On
Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time
Army officials blamed a data link for causing controllers to lose track of a drone being used “in support of increased force-protection measures” at Colorado’s Fort Carson. The four-pound drone crashed in a civilian’s yard 12 miles from the military base. “I couldn’t figure out who owned it, so I wrote my telephone number on a piece of paper. . . and held it in front of the camera, thinking someone would call me if they wanted it back,” Colorado Springs resident Ronald Fisk said. No one responded, so Fisk called police. (Colorado Springs’ The Gazette)
A Welsh bus company promoting its new fleet of buses posted ads on the back of them showing an apparently topless woman holding a sign saying, “Ride me all day for £3.” Outrage on social media prompted an apology from Cardiff-based New Adventure Travel, which explained the slogan was “a little tongue in cheek” but promised to remove the ads “within the next 24 hours.” (Britain’s The Guardian)

I predict that Syracuse will be one of the regions selected for the half-billion in state investment. One chunk of that money is desTAKE ignated to complete the endowment fund that will allow all Syracuse high school graduates to attend college, making good on the Say Yes promise in perpetuity. That is worth celebrating.

Inner Harbor. Michael Davis
CANNIBAL CAPITALISM COMES HOME
C
apitalism has pitted Central New York against some pretty tough adversaries. First the low-wage countries of the world took the factories that sustained our families. Then the cities of the South began to suck away the young and talented who could help us rebuild.
Lately, at the state level, we have a governor who chooses to break up New York into regions and then set us to battling with one another for his benevolence. This process, which he calls as the REDC (Regional Economic Development Councils) and others refer to as “The Hunger Games,” reaches a climax on Thursday, Dec. 10, when Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to announce which of the 10 regions will win. In this season of expectation, when children listen for tiny sleigh bells and every knee in Christendom bends in anticipation of the arrival of a savior, it is safe to say that more than a few grownups in our town will find it hard to sleep on the night before Cuomo’s announcement. Many long-term projects will be initiated or boosted by this money, a crisp $100 million annually for five years. Here’s one meager investment that sorely needs to be made. The state should fund a table at the new Recess Coffee location on Montgomery Street just across from City Hall. On that table they should place a small sign saying “Reserved for Stephanie
Miner and Joanie Mahoney.” The table should be available every day until Onondaga County Executive Mahoney takes that short walk through downtown and Syracuse Mayor Miner comes downstairs to sit with her and put city-county relations back on an amicable, functional basis. Coffee alone won’t do the trick, you say? Then we include a provision to open a tab at Wolff’s Biergarten right next door to Recess. And the two leaders, whose famous cooperation not too many years ago was the talk of the town, can’t settle their tab until they settle their differences. First on the Biergarten agenda should be the Inner Harbor, which has been the next cool thing in our town for longer than Mike Hopkins has been at Jim Boeheim’s side. The recent ruckus over the PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) agreement for COR Development won’t stop the construction at of the harbor, but it may well widen the division between the county and the city at the very moment when greater consolidation is most needed. (Funding to
advance said cooperation is part of this year’s REDC bid.) The Inner Harbor has potential to both create jobs for needy and worthy local workers, and to enhance the tax base for city schools and services. In dollar terms, whether the project is run through the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency or the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency, there won’t be a vast difference. This project is up in the air because of politics. Miner and Mahoney have, whether they know it or not, divided up the very community they seek to support, the people who most need the jobs. Advocates, tired of broken promises, press their case for local jobs, choosing sides between the county and the city while failing to note that neither IDA has asked the developer to commit to specific targets for local hiring. COR Development is not to blame for the mistrust created by the Destiny deals and other fiascos, but its leaders are operating in the climate created by years of neglect and discrimination. Is it too much to ask that they at least hold a meeting with the Urban Jobs Task Force? That could happen if our two leaders bury the hatchet. The early Miner-Mahoney cooperation has gotten us more than a merged purchasing department and economic development office: It opened possibilities for more rational regional governance in an era of shrinking resources. That vital conversation ended when Miner got in a dispute with Cuomo a few years back and Mahoney chose to keep working with him. Doesn’t that seem rather petty at this distance, given what is at stake? Their working relationship can get back on track if Mahoney uses some of her influence to get Cuomo to once again treat Miner with respect, and if Miner sheds her “my way or the highway” approach to those who dare to disagree with her. Last call at the Biergarten. Let’s get it done. SNT

HOPS TO IT FOR THE HOLIDAYS
I
t’s beer o’clock somewhere, the saying goes. You can get beer any time of day at the gas station, the grocery store and the neighborhood bar.
Want to kick it up a notch in the beer department? There’s a host of new places with an emphasis on local and regional craft beer (and imports, too) around Central New York. It’s the holidays, so tap the possibilities. Wolff’s Biergarten. This Albany-based beer-drinking and soccer-watching destination opened at 106 Montgomery St. last month, with 20 beer lines and a list of mostly German and other European “bier” selections not usually found in other bars. If you were around in the 1970s, you remember the spot as the Firebarn Tavern. It’s casual and comfortable, with long picnic tables and bins of roasted peanuts on each table — just toss the shells on the floor. Tables encourage mingling and people of all ages were enjoying beer and conversation when we stopped in on a recent weeknight. The bar accepts cash only, however, with
ATMs on site. 299-7789, wolffsbier garten.com. The Evergreen. “Crafted drink and local fare” have a new home at this Hanover Square spot, which opened in November. The Evergreen has a frequently changing lineup of 20-something beers on tap, plus upscale tavern-comfort food (including vegetarian options) made with locally sourced ingredients. Have a craft beer you’re particularly fond of? Put in a request and they’ll try to get it in the rotation for you. The Evergreen is at 125 E. Water St., in the spot formerly occupied by Bull and Bear Pub. 870-3500, theever green.co. Finger Lakes on Tap. The former Creekside Books on 35 Fennell St. in Skaneateles was once a destination for tomes and coffee. Now it’s a destination for a wide variety of craft beer from across New York state and the Northeast,
as well as brews of the world. Represented are Abandon Brewing and Climbing Bines (Penn Yan), Empire Brewing Company and Middle Ages Brewing Company (Syracuse), Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown), Keuka Brewing Company (Hammondsport), Ithaca Beer Company (Ithaca), Upstate Brewing Company (Elmira) and others. There are about 60 taps for beer, plus a couple reserved for hard cider. Hungry? There’s a short food menu, with soup, sandwiches, salads and items to share, such as fondue, meat and cheese plates. Finger Lakes on Tap opened in November. Hours are Wednesdays to Saturdays, noon to 10 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 8 p.m. 685-9600, fingerlakes ontap.com. Local 315 Brewing Company. Looking for craft beer in a more rural setting? Local 315 Brewing Company is on a Warners hops farm owned by the Mathews family. The tasting room has about a dozen beers on tap. Take the chill off with the Winter Warmer, a honey, ginger and cinnamon-infused ale that, at 12 percent alcohol by volume, will warm
you up. Bring your own glass growler for a fill-up or pick up a “crowler,’’ the latest in portable beer. It’s a 32-ounce aluminum can filled and sealed for you to take home. Local 315 Brewing, 3160 Warners Road, is open Fridays, 5 to 9 p.m., Saturdays, noon to 8 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m. 382-2051, local315brewing.com. Finger Lakes Beer Trail Passport. Got a craft beer lover on your holiday gift list? The 2016 passport ($20) is your ticket to fun and savings, with more than $475 worth of discounts on tasting fees, growler fills, merchandise, accommodations, transportation and more at 52 breweries, brew pubs, tasting rooms, craft beer stores and lodging establishments along the Finger Lakes Beer Trail. fingerlakesbeertrail.com/ content/passport/, info@fingerlakesbee rtrail.com. Isaac Budmen explores the brave new world of three-dimensional printing By David Armelino

merging as a new technology in the 1980s, three-dimensional printing has come a long way from its humble beginnings. The process and equipment involved is ever expanding, and what was not possible just a few years ago is achievable today.

Isaac Budmen is a 3-D freelance designer who is experiencing this evolution firsthand. Budmen, a graduate of Syracuse University, along with SU professor of digital culture Anthony Rotolo, wrote and published The Book on 3D Printing in August 2013. The two met when Budmen took an SU class taught by Rotolo that was based on the TV and film series Star Trek. Rotolo said that references to 3-D printing in his lectures caught the attention of Budmen. What materialized after that was the beginning of a strong working relationship. “He was there at the front of the room, asking me more about it, wanting to study it, wanting to learn about it,” Rotolo recalled. “I was certainly aware of 3-D printing but was by no means a practitioner of it. So Isaac, overnight, sort of became that, and I went along for the ride with him because it was fascinating. (This is) what ultimately culminated in the book.” Budmen said that at the time the book was written, there were no adequate resources to help non-engineers understand 3-D printing. When he finally got his hands on a 3-D printer, he investigated Internet forums to help guide him while learning to operate his new machine. “We walk folks through this in a way that engineers will understand but that is friendlier for people like teachers and someone who isn’t technical,” Budmen said. “If I were an engineer, I’d pick this book up so I could talk to my friends without sounding like a nerd.” The basic process of 3-D printing is similar to a hot glue gun. The material the objects are made of is a plastic that starts out as a 2-D object. The 2-D layers are then stacked to eventually create a 3-D object. Before getting started on printing, however, a model must be constructed using

designated software, which can range in price and quality. After learning how to operate the software and the printers, the possibilities are nearly endless for what can come to life. “It got to the point where I had been doing so much of this stuff, Anthony and I looked at each other and he said to me, ‘I think you might know more about this than most people on the planet,’” Budmen said. “So we did a bunch of research on what’s out there right now. (There wasn’t) much. Everything that was an easy-to-read guide to 3-D printing wasn’t substantial enough. So that’s where we kind of saw this opening.” Budmen and Rotolo gathered all they had learned while experimenting in 3-D printing and compiled what they determined were the most important elements. Rotolo uses the book in his classes at SU so students with minimal experience with the technology can easily grasp it. “One of the things that initially attracted me to work with Isaac was that he has this really expansive vision,” Rotolo said. “(He’s) often not looking at ‘What does it do right now?’ but is asking the question, ‘What else can it do?’” After creating the “how-to” 3-D printing book, Budmen’s work crossed over into other projects, which includes the art of 3-D scanning. In 2014, he successfully scanned the Holden Observatory at SU, with the help of friend Arland Whitfield, by using a camera attached to a drone. The drone soared around the building as the camera captured many photos taken at different angles. Budmen said the software was then able to construct a rendering of the building using the compiled images. “What the software does is it reconstructs from the photo texture to the actual texture of the building,” Budmen said. “This is, as far as we know, the first building that was ever 3-D scanned with the sole intent of 3-D printing.” Budmen said there is a difference between having what he called a “droneo-graph” of the building and simply modeling it to the best of one’s ability. The scanned object captures the age of the building and the renovations it has gone through. He also said the idea of scanning historical monuments every 100 years could be beneficial information that should be archived. Budmen is intrigued by the concept that scans could be uploaded to the Internet for educational purposes, such as the one he did on the Holden Observatory, which can be viewed at

Budmen’s website, teambudmen.com. Anyone with access to a 3-D printer could print his scan, which is where the idea of scanning and printing monuments originated. “There’s real value in being able to personalize and capture the things around us in three-dimensional form rather than just as a photo,” Budmen said. “A photo only tells us so much information.” Budmen had a chance to further experiment with this procedure during his time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He also tested other methods used to preserve and even expand on famous pieces of artwork. “When you are able to take something that already exists in the world, and feed that through the technology, it gives us new ways of understanding it,” Budmen said. “What they told me to do was go walk around and create stuff in response to the collection. So that’s what I ended up doing.” During his time at the Manhattan museum, Budmen scanned many pieces of art, then used these scans to manipulate the pieces in several ways. This included adding specific finishes to scans once they were 3-D printed, such as a metal appearance to give the illusion of texture using sands and dry brushes. Budmen was also able to take 2-D paintings and add depth to them using the technology that 3-D printing offers. It’s a process that he calls dimensionalization. “I took a Picasso painting that had this really amorphous, kind of biological-looking sculpture,” Budmen said. “(Picasso) had originally hoped for this to be like a monumental sculpture, but no one would commission him to make it, so he had to paint it.” Budmen was able to make Picasso’s original intentions a reality, as well as with other pieces. This included aspects of paintings by other artists such as Vincent van Gogh. Prior to his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Budmen first experimented with dimensionalization with local artist Adam Lister. Lister’s method involves using already existing artwork

and photographs to create 8-bit versions of them. “He wrote to me and proposed sort of a trade,” Lister said. “I was going to make a painting in my kind of geometric technique, and in exchange, he was going to design a 3-D print based off of one of my paintings.” Budmen and Lister’s eventual series of paintings and 3-D prints, titled “8 Bits, 3 Dimensions,” is available to view at 8bits3dimensions.com. “It was a good collaboration,” Lister said. “The images I created, according to him, really lent themselves to 3-D printing.” Aside from his work with 3-D scanning and dimensionalization, one of Budmen’s goals is to make 3-D printed furniture to sell on the Internet. He hopes to have a website where people can customize the furniture to their liking, including size, color and other characteristics. “People will be able to take a set of sliders (on the website) and decide how tall they want (the chair). How wide do they want it? How many facets do they want?” Budmen said. “They’ll be able to design a piece of furniture. The reality is, I’ve designed it ahead of time. All they’re doing is tweaking it.” Budmen noted that 3-D printing is still far from where it could be. The limitations have to do with the plastics and other materials being used. “The robots we have inside the printers can run a lot faster than we’re running them right now. That technology is pretty good,” Budmen said. “We’re only utilizing about 40 percent of the actual robot’s capability, and that’s largely because the materials haven’t caught up yet.” Yet Budmen has dedicated his life to inventing. Since involving himself with 3-D printing, he believes the art form will play a large role in the future in terms of our perception of reality. “What I love about 3-D printing is that it has this incredible ability to materialize our imagination,” Budmen said. “This is a way that you can take things from your imagination and you can literally hold them in our hand and make them a part of the real world.” SNT
For those interested in doing some inventing of their own, the SALT Makerspace, 201 E. Jefferson St., provides a community hub for creators of all kinds. The Makerspace not only offers a spot for local inventors to experiment and produce, it also features classes to assist in the creative process. Director Michael Giannattasio explained that the printers in the SALT 3-D printing workshop area, along with 3-D printers in general, contain their own software that is designed to handle STL (Stereo Lithography) files. “(An STL file) is an exported file format that these machines can actually understand and translate into three-dimensional form.” Giannattasio said. “(These STL files can be made) using SolidWorks, which is a program we have here, Rhyno, Tinkered or Google SketchUp.” The software used to generate 3-D objects isn’t for everyone. Luckily, Giannattassio’s workspace is open to anyone who wishes to learn the craft. The Makerspace comes with all the materials anyone would need to create their vision at an affordable price. “We have about five different 3-D printing style workshops,” Giannattassio said. “So (anyone) could come in without any skills and get an introduction to the software. Once they have that introduction, they can go home and, utilizing some of the free softwares and designing, they could send us the file and we could 3-D print them.” Memberships are offered for anyone wishing to take advantage of the materials, giving individuals access to the space and work as they please without any guidance. This includes designing on the computers provided, as well as working with the printers. For information on memberships, visit saltmaker.org.

HOME AND HILARITY FOR THE HOLIDAYS
A lot of kids drop hints about what they’d like for Christmas. But 9-year-old Ralphie Parker, the central character of A Christmas Story, Central New York Playhouse’s seasonal offering, goes further. As performed by Colin Dean, Ralphie is a bespectacled, somewhat nerdy kid obsessed by the desire to own a Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot Range Model BB rifle. As Christmas approaches, Ralphie’s unceasing strategies to call the BB gun to his parents’ attention are what bind together some lively tales inspired by the childhood experiences of Jean Shepherd, one of America’s all-time great raconteurs. Shepherd, a radio personality during the 1950s, spun vivid stories about his family and boyhood friends in a small town in Indiana. The play by Philip Grecian is adapted from the 1983 yuletide film comedy with Darren McGavin. In the movie, the voice of Shepherd was heard as narrator for the adult Ralph’s recollections. For this production, Ed Mastin tackles this huge role, adding just the right tone of bemused nostalgia as he watches these scenes take place before his eyes. Director Dan Rowlands was lucky to borrow items from a local collector of A Christmas Story memorabilia, especially a key prop for one of the play’s funniest episodes. When Ralphie’s “old man” (Steve Rowlands) wins a contest prize,
it turns out to be a lamp base in the form of a shapely female leg, covered in a net stocking from its high-heeled shoe to the thigh that disappears under a fringed shade. Ralphie’s mother (Carrie Wilson) shields the eyes of her little son Randy (played by her real son, Alex Wilson) from the shocking sight, but Dad insists on keeping it lit in front of the window, where it is ogled by neighborhood youths. In another classic episode, Ralphie waits expectantly for an envelope containing the Little Orphan Annie decoder to arrive. The adult Ralph remembers the boy’s high hopes: “I was going to have the wisdom of the ages, the secret of life.” What a letdown when Ralphie sits by the radio with his decoder, only to find that the message is “Drink more Ovaltine.” Shepherd recounted things we still recognize from our own childhoods. Who didn’t have an aunt who sent inappropriate gifts? Ralphie’s Aunt Clara, forgetting both his age and his gender, sends pink bunny pajamas. Ralphie checks the front porch before obediently trying them on to be sure that none of his classmates from the Warren G. Harding School are lurking there. Another thing that made Shepherd such a great storyteller was his specificity of detail. Jerry Seinfeld has said he learned everything he knew about comedy from the way Shepherd treated the minor incidents in life. Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegone owes a lot to Shepherd’s fictional home of Hohman, Ind. The Central New York Playhouse production of A Christmas Story, playing through Dec. 19, treats these iconic American stories with great affection. SNT

PAN-DEMONIUM RULES AT SYRACUSE STAGE
Here’s an unbeatable formula for a terrific show. First, take the cream of the Syracuse University Drama Department’s talented musical theater students, add some seasoned professionals, then mix with top technical expertise gathered from around the country. Add these ingredients to a longtime favorite story, greatly enhanced by songs and dances from the heyday of the American musical, and you’ve got Peter Pan, the perfect family-friendly holiday treat playing through Jan. 3 at Syracuse Stage. It’s a magical moment when Peter (the sweet-voiced Troy Hussmann) takes to the air with Wendy Darling (appealingly played by Delphi Borich) and her two younger brothers John and Michael (Matthew Caraccioli and Seamus Gailor). The individual flying style of each adds to the charm, with the experienced Peter swooping with ease, while little Michael stamps the air with his feet. (Flying effects were provided by the expert ZFX Company.) The Palladian windows of the Darlings’ nursery open wide, and off they all go through the star-strewn sky, leaving planet earth far behind. It’s when Peter and his new friends get to Neverland that the fun really begins. From the moment Peter arrives back home, leading a parade of animals including a gawky, long-necked, splendidly plumed ostrich, we’re in a storybook world. After some initial misunderstand-

ing, Peter’s band of Lost Boys accept Wendy as their proxy mother. But dangers lurk all round in Neverland. The Lost Boys have to look out for the warlike troop led by Tiger Lily (Ana Marcu), wisely converted in this production from author J.M Barrie’s politically incorrect Indians to a band of powerful female warriors. Their real enemy is the dastardly pirate, Captain Hook, played with delicious maliciousness by Donald Corren. A velvet-cloaked dandy, Corren plucks fussily at the lace ruffle at his wrist as he curls his lip in a stage villain’s evil laugh. All it takes is the sound of a ticking clock to puncture his bravado and reveal him as a coward. Corren’s comic timing is perfect, as is that of the sound technician

mysterious lady,” which is only Peter and Tiger Lily very thinly disguised behind a gauzy veil, singing an operatic duo accompanied by flute. Music director Brian Cimmet’s orchestra is up to the task, as it is throughout the many songs by which this musical tells its story. Director Paul Barnes had to pull together a lot of different pieces to create this show. It all works, right down to the person operating the follow spots. Barnes even manages to bring the audience into the act. Captain Hook’s pursuit of his intended victims spills off the stage, with everyone — ostrich included — being chased up and down the aisles. who produces a “clink” when the captain brings his hook down on the head of his sidekick Smee (Kraig Swartz). At the heart of this production are knockout dance numbers, choreographed by Anthony Salatino, that happily overshadow some of the weirder aspects of this story about a boy on the cusp of adolescence who refuses to make the transition to adulthood. The real showstopper is a percussive dance with sticks performed by the combined forces of the Lost Boys and Tiger Lily’s troop. Captain Hook’s pirates provide some hilarious dances of their own, including a tarantella complete with castanets and some soft-shoe steps straight out of burlesque. Corren is at his funniest when he is beguiled by what he takes to be “a

ZULU GIZMO RECALLS ANALOG HEYDAY
Langston Masingale, chief engineer and lead producer at StudioDOG Pro on West Fayette Street, is a musical Renaissance man. The 38-year-old record producer, audio engineer, hip-hop artist and inventor reads electronic instruction manuals for leisure. When he’s not MacGyvering in-studio equipment hacks — like a PVC 90-degree “elbow mic” or a Michael Jackson-inspired blanket kick drum cover — he designs custom microphones for the likes of Pink, Tony Bennett, Kanye West and the anchors of NPR’s Snap Judgment under the umbrella of his Maryland-based company, JJ Audio. Last month, Masingale presented a new device at the 139th international convention of the Audio Engineering Society in New York City. That device, called Zulu, simulates the behavior and character of analog tape, and it has the potential to transform the recording industry. “I was completely blown away,” said Alan Evans of the first time he heard a recording with Zulu. Evans is a producer, audio engineer and drummer for acclaimed funk-jazz trio Soulive. “There’s a lot of stuff about tape that I don’t like, but the sound and feel is great. These days, everyone is trying to get back to that.” Evans is right. Vinyl record sales in the United States have been quietly but steadily climbing since 2007. From 2014 to 2015 alone, vinyl sales increased 52.1 percent. That’s a staggering margin for a medium eulogized and left for dead by the 1990s-era digital music boom. The digital boom has overtaken the recording industry, with programs like Pro Tools now industry standard. Meanwhile, analog tape decks gather dust in the corner, and not without reason. The logistics of storing, repairing and servicing both the tape and the machines on which they run is expensive and cumbersome. StudioDOG Pro recently had its Studer tape machine serviced and repaired for a hefty $10,000. “I made Zulu because people want to get back to using tape,” said Masingale. “But they don’t want to get back to it by suffering the penalty.”
Langsten Masingale (front) at StudioDOG. Michael Davis photo
Zulu solves both the mechanical and financial drawbacks of tape. Its inner workings are a trade secret, but the butter-colored, two-channel, 6-by-6.5 box rings in at $400, an accessible price for big-name studios and garage-band freelancers. The device will be manufactured in Syracuse by BBD Coaters Inc. and Screen Graphic Art, Inc., with the metal body outsourced to Little Rock, Ark. That local production is imperative to Masingale, who’s lived in cities across the country but makes his home here. He was
born in Syracuse on May 14, 1977. “When I was 8, hip-hop music was taking the city by storm,” said Masingale. He remembers riding his bike to Thornden Park and being enraptured by the frenzy of freestyle rap battles and break-dancers spinning on cardboard washing machine boxes. “I lived in the ’hood, but then you could go a couple thousand feet and you were in Westcott Nation,” he said. “It was this really odd but beautiful mix of cultures that kind of infringed on one another.”
Masingale’s love for the city is underscored by a dire concern for the kids who live here, and a desire to invest in their potential. One of his proudest achievements is the work he’s done with local teens in his 10-week after-school program, Audio Pups. Zulu is the first product from Masingale’s new equipment company, Handsome Audio. He plans to employ, teach and mentor Syracuse city high school students with paid positions in every aspect of the business: from the production skills of soldering, coding and circuitry to bookkeeping, industrial relations and community outreach. “I know how to teach kids, I know how to work with youth, I know how to get people motivated,” he said. “That’s almost more important than Zulu.” Masingale’s focus on apprenticeship is born out of his gratitude to God for the opportunities that paved the way for his success, including his first studio experience as a 16-year-old in his uncle’s recording studio in New Jersey. Mark Nanni, keyboardist for roots rock group Los Blancos, was one of the first musicians to use Zulu at StudioDOG Pro. “His ear is fantastic,” said Nanni about Masingale. “He’s just very natural in his musicianship and the way he applies his musicianship to the more technical sides of recording and music equipment in general.” Zulu is available now to order through the Handsome Audio website, and a consumer version called Zulu Fi will be released soon. Zulu Fi won’t have recording capabilities, but it will have an RCA jack where an iPod or CD player can be plugged in to achieve the listening experience of analog. Zulu Fi will be $200. THE GIFT OF HEALTH IS WHAT EVERY “BODHI” NEEDS
In the past 12 years, the Syracuse University football team has had four head coaches and no happy endings — unless you count Doug Marrone leaving his self-proclaimed “dream job” at SU for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. So what makes coach No. 5, Dino Babers, think it’s going to end any differently? Well, for starters, Babers has a clear vision, and it doesn’t end with him getting fired after yet another 3-9 or 4-8 season. “Close your eyes and visualize this,” Babers said at his introductory news conference on Monday, Dec. 7. “You’re in the Carrier Dome. The house is filled. The feeling is electric. The noise is deafening. You have a defense that is relentless. You have a special teams that has been wellcoached. You have an offense that will not huddle and you have a game that is faster than you’ve ever seen on turf. Open your eyes . . . that is going to be a reality. That is going to be Syracuse football.” And with that, Babers set a bar that hasn’t been reached consistently at SU since the mid- to late 1990s. The 54-yearold Babers, who called this position his “destination job,” said he believes the Orange under his watch will compete for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, rejuvenate the fan base and fill the Carrier Dome again on Saturday afternoons that don’t involve the Duke or North Carolina basketball teams. “This is a move of faith; belief without evidence,” he said. “I really believe that we are going to start something that people are going to be talking about for a long, long time.” Babers is new athletic director Mark Coyle’s first hire, and he fills Coyle’s requirement that Scott Shafer’s replacement has “a proven track record.” In four years as a head coach, Babers is 37-16: 19-7 with two Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year awards at Eastern Illinois in 2012-2013, and 18-9 with a bowl win and Mid-American Conference title at Bowling Green in 2014-2015. But Babers’ most notable coaching experience may be as an assistant coach at Baylor University, where he helped head coach Art Briles revitalize the program and turn it into a national title contender with a fast-paced, up-tempo offense that Babers plans to use at SU. So while Orange fans have been conditioned over the years to ask why, Babers is here to say, “Why not?” “You tell me why not,” he said. “The tradition here is unbelievable. We are talking about 44. We are talking about Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little. Heck, I know 39: Larry Czonka. The tradition here is unbelievable and the fan support, we need to give them what they deserve. And that is what I came here to do.” SNT

PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department of Financial Services at 1-800-342-3736 or visit the Department’s website at www.dfs. ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any
suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. ming with Nicki Minaj and Death Cab for Cutie on a passage from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute, you are redefining the meanings of the words “hybrid,” “amalgam” and “hodgepodge.” You’re mixing metaphors with panache. You’re building bridges with cheeky verve. Some of your blends are messy mishmashes, but more often they are synergistic successes. With the power granted to me by the gods of mixing and matching, I hereby authorize you to keep splurging on the urge to merge. This is your special time to experiment with the magic of combining things that have rarely or never been combined. figure out the difference between the fake cure and the real cure. And once you know which is which, I hope you will do the right thing rather than the sentimental thing. For best results, keep these considerations in mind: The fake cure may taste sweeter than the real one. It may also be better packaged and more alluringly promoted. In fact, the only advantage the real cure may have over the fake one is that it will actually work to heal you.

pentine quality about you these days. It’s as if you are the elegant and crafty hero of an epic myth set in the ancient future. You are sweeter and saucier than usual, edgier and more extravagantly emotive. You are somehow both a repository of tantalizing secrets and a fount of arousing revelations. As I meditate on the magic you embody, I am reminded of a passage from Laini Taylor’s fantasy novel Daughter of Smoke & Bone: “She tastes like nectar and salt. Nectar and salt and apples. Pollen and stars and hinges. She tastes like fairy tales. Swan maiden at midnight. Cream on the tip of a fox’s tongue. She tastes like hope.”

do you desire the most? What is the quality of being that you aspire to inhabit more and more as you grow older? Maybe it’s the feeling of being deeply appreciated, or the ability to see things as they really are, or an intuitive wisdom about how to cultivate vibrant relationships. I invite you to set an intention to cultivate this singular experience with all your passion and ingenuity. The time is right. Make a pact with yourself.

through a door you didn’t know that you left open,” said actor John Barrymore. I hope you’ve left open a lot of those doors, Aries. The more there are, the happier you will be. This is the week of all weeks when joy, pleasure and even zany bliss are likely to find their ways into your life from unexpected sources and unanticipated directions. If you’re lucky, you also have a few forgotten cracks and neglected gaps where fierce delights and crisp wonders can come wandering in.

horoscope book at a garage sale for 25 cents. The cover was missing and some pages were water-damaged, so parts of it were hard to decipher. But the following passage jumped out at me: “In romantic matters, Virgos initially tend to be cool, even standoffish. Their perfectionism may interfere with their ability to follow through on promising beginnings. But if they ever allow themselves to relax and go further, they will eventually ignite. And then, watch out! Their passion will generate intense heat and light.” I suspect that this description may apply to you in the coming weeks. Let’s hope you will trust your intuition about which possibilities warrant your caution and which deserve your opening.

a bore is to tell everything,” said French writer Voltaire. I agree, and add these thoughts: To tell everything also tempts you to wrongly imagine that you have everything completely figured
out. Furthermore, it may compromise your leverage in dicey situations where other people are using information as a weapon. So the moral of the current story is this: Don’t tell everything! I realize this could be hard, since you are a good talker these days; your ability to express yourself is at a peak. So what should you do? Whenever you speak, aim for quality over quantity. And always weave in a bit of mystery.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Ducks are the
most unflappable creatures I know. Cats are often regarded as the top practitioners of the “I don’t give a f---” attitude, but I think ducks outshine them. When domestic felines exhibit their classic aloofness, there’s sometimes a subtext of annoyance or contempt. But ducks are consistently as imperturbable as Zen masters. Right now, as I gaze out my office window, I’m watching five of them swim calmly, with easygoing nonchalance, against the swift current of the creek in the torrential rain. I invite you to be like ducks in the coming days. Now is an excellent time to practice the high art of truly not giving a f---.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) My old friend
Jeff started working at a gambling casino in Atlantic City. “You’ve gone over to the dark side!” I kidded. He acknowledged that 90 percent of the casino’s visitors lose money gambling. On the bright side, he said, 95 percent of them leave happy. I don’t encourage you to do this kind of gambling in the near future, Sagittarius. It’s true that you will be riding a lucky streak. But smarter, surer risks will be a better way to channel your good fortune. So here’s the bottom line: In whatever way you choose to bet or speculate, don’t let your lively spirits trick you into relying on pure impulsiveness. Do the research. Perform your due diligence. It’s not enough just to be entertained. The goal is to both have fun and be successful.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus was a pioneer thinker whose ideas helped pave the way for the development of science. Believe nothing, he taught, unless you can evaluate it through your personal observation and logical analysis. Using this admirable approach, he determined that the size of our sun is about two feet in diameter. I’m guessing that you have made comparable misestimations about at least two facts of life, Capricorn. They seem quite reasonable but are very wrong. The good news is that you will soon be relieved of those mistakes. After some initial disruption, you will feel liberated. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarian inven-
tor Thomas Edison owned 1,093 patents. Nicknamed “The Wizard of Menlo Park,” he devised the first practical electrical light bulb, the movie camera, the alkaline storage battery and many more useful things. The creation he loved best was the phonograph. It was the first machine in history that could record and reproduce sound. Edison bragged that no one else had ever made such a wonderful instrument. It was “absolutely original.” I bring this to your attention, Aquarius, because I think you’re due for an outbreak of absolute originality. What are the most unique gifts you have to offer? In addition to those you already know about, new ones may be ready to emerge.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Here’s an experiment that makes good astrological sense for you to try in the coming weeks. Whenever you feel a tinge of frustration, immediately say, “I am an irrepressible source of power and freedom and love.” Anytime you notice a trace of inadequacy rising up in you, or a touch of blame, or a taste of anger, declare, “I am an irresistible magnet for power and freedom and love.” If you’re bothered by a mistake you made, or a flash of ignorance expressed by another person, or a maddening glitch in the flow of the life force, stop what you’re doing, interrupt the irritation, and proclaim, “I am awash in power and freedom and love.”
