Happy Holidays From the Syracuse New Times

STARTING POINT There’s plenty of music I like. There’s plenty of music I don’t like. I can’t imagine myself working up the passion about the music I don’t like or the bands that perform it to go online and excoriate them in public comments, but there was a lot of that going on last week after the New Times published a cover story about the local band Perfect Pussy. Some people were put off by the use of the band’s provocative name on the cover. Some people had less than no use for the band’s music. Some people believe the band hasn’t earned the attention it is receiving. And lots of people in the local music scene absolutely hate the band’s attitude toward that local scene. All of which is fine. When we decided to report on the band, and to put it on the cover, it wasn’t because of the name, or because we’re fans of the music, or because its members had paid their dues or because the band is well-liked. It’s because the band is newsworthy. Like it or not, Perfect Pussy has, in its niche, attracted broad attention Photography by outside of Syracuse. All that Michael Davis, was documented in the story: the Cupcake by recording contract, the international Meaghan Arbital touring, the nod the band has received from Rolling Stone magazine. The link the New Times provided to video of the band was from the NPR website, for heaven’s sake. Week in and week out, the New What’s buzzing Times reports on local music. And the most. whether we point to Jess Novak’s coverage week in and week out in print, or to the blog posts online by Micha Crook and occasionally Chris Malone, we’re proud of the depth and breadth of that Follow us coverage. @syracusenew times.com Like it or not, Perfect Pussy is part of that, too. And that’s why, if we had it to do all over again, we’d still put the band on our cover.

A British company said it intends to change commercial air travel by developing an airplane without windows. Removing windows, according to the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), would eliminate the need to reinforce the fuselage, making planes lighter and thus more fuel-efficient. Instead of windows, ultra-thin flex screens could display outside scenery captured by cameras outside the plane or act as a personal touch screen for passengers to surf the Internet or check their email while flying. The concept is still in its design phase, CPI developers said, noting it will take around five years before the screens, using organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), are ready for full production. BABY BOOMERS BACK IN THE ’HOOD After a season in exile from its home turf, the Baby Boomers (over 40) Basketball League has returned to the Southwest Community Center court. “We lost our home crowd,” league coordinator Ed Mitchell said of last season’s move to McChesney Park, on the city’s North Side. The return to the Southwest Community Center was two weeks late, and he attributed the delay to negotiations on funding for the 17-week schedule. Unlike last year, when discussions about cash broke down, everyone involved wants to see the teams balling Sundays at SWCC. “(SWCC Executive Director) Sharon Owens is the main one in making it happen,” said Jesse Brantley, the league co-coordinator. This season’s opener, earlier this month, displayed the Baby Boomers’ tradition of keeping it funky, as behindthe-back and no-look passes proliferated, and Keith Rowser set up almost on the 3-point line to launch his free throws. Missing elements of the competition’s cultural expression were the raucous crescendos boomed from the sound system of DJ Joe Parks during pre-game, half time and time outs, and the sumptuous soul spread from the kitchen of Marisha Heard. Mitchell and Brantley promised the return of both. Also missing was the presence of Howard Triche, a headliner at Corcoran High School and Syracuse University who logged time in the National Basketball Association. His impact on the league over the past decade has been such that his teammates on the eighttime champion Showtime (formerly Ballard Construction) have had to endure being known as “Howard ’n’ them.” Speculation hovers that work obligations will limit Triche to alternate weeks playing this season. Showtime’s line-up for the opener was also missing Pony Bullock, former Nottingham star who has retired from league play. But Bobby Chestnut, a standout at Le Moyne College, is back for another run, as is Julius “Pops” Anderson, who

has been announcing his retirement for the past three years. “This year, it’s real,” he said after Showtime’s opening loss to the B&B Lounge. “The wife said so.” Anderson contributed continual hustle, scoring 20 points and bringing Showtime within three points with 11 seconds left in the game, but B&B converted foul shots to log a 68-63 victory. B&B also benefitted from the presence of Lazarus Sims, former SU stalwart, who saw action as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, who scored 19.

Korin’s Cleaning Service beat Hairport Barbershop 55-44 in the day’s opening game. The All City Ballin’ Pharoahs beat International 51-40 in the afternoon’s finale. The Baby Boomers are appealing for help in meeting the financial needs of staging the league this season. Contributions should be sent to Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility, 401 South Ave., Syracuse NY 13204, attention Ed Mitchell. SNT

“The Cold War is over,” said former Colombian President Andres Pastraña, speaking 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and one day after President Obama announced the

LOCAL CUBAN IMMIGRANTS HOPE OBAMA'S MOVE MIGHT HELP FAMILIES LEFT BEHIND

A

friend told me that the lobby of the Cooperative Federal Credit Union, where she works, is usually full of Cuban-born Syracusans on Fridays. So last week, just two days after President Barack Obama announced the reopening of diplomatic relations with Cuba and a series of measures designed to increase economic ties and travel between the two Cold War enemies, I thought that would be a good place to go to take the pulse of the community.

My friend was right, and there was no shortage of Cuban immigrants eager to give their opinions about the latest twist in the long and agonizing conflict between their homeland and the country that has taken them in. It was a chilly afternoon, with a wet wind whipping down North Salina, but things quickly heated up in the lobby as soon as I asked some of the people waiting in line about the news coming from Washington and Havana. There was plenty of passion to go around. One older woman expressed doubt that the changes would ever go into effect. Most of the crowd was hopeful but by no means certain that the relations would improve and they would ease life for their families left behind on the island. Their anger at the Castro regime was palpable, and to a person they hoped that the change in diplomatic status would be a good idea, especially if it led to a

change in the Cuban regime. But mostly, they wanted to be able to help their families back home. The room filled with an exchange of stories about loved ones living with less and less every year. Did they blame the embargo, the Cuban government, or both? “What embargo?” said a sharply dressed old man. “France has no embargo. Japan has no embargo (against Cuba).” For them, the blame lay squarely with the Cuban Communist government, but they had no use for the hard liners in Miami who rejected any opening to the island either. “We are not like the old Cubans in Miami,” said one man in his mid 40s, a machinist who has been here since 2002. “We have a different experience. We were born in a different era. Cuba needs the United States. The United States needs Cuba. If the presidents talk

and come to some agreement that could help the people, that’s a good thing. We hope it gets easier to send a little more to our families. I have my father there, so we try to send a little bit of money when we can.” And there was this: Everyone who spoke up was afraid to have their names appear in print. “If my name appears in the paper, they won’t let me come back to see my family,” said one man who has lived here since 2008. “My mother is 85 years old. What if I can’t go see her?” At age 49, he is nearly as old as the embargo itself, and he is cautiously optimistic that the changes announced last week will bear fruit. “We’ve seen steps taken in the past, and then they take steps backward. We’ll see if it’s true this time.” Above the sound of many conversations, a factory worker who gave his name but asked that it not be printed offered the following assessment: “I’m in agreement. My family is there, and they have needs. We can’t let them continue to live the way they live. If the presidents want to dialogue and come to an agreement, that for me is a good thing. Cuba needs the United States. We need medicine, we need food. I know that the embargo still exists, but first they need to open embassies. Something has to happen. Cuba has to change.” Most of the people I spoke with didn’t think they will ever return to Cuba. They like the idea of being able to visit without going through Canada. If things change, said the machinist, he hopes to spend more time on the island. As a couple waiting in line listened to the debate going on around them, a woman turned to me and told of the trouble she faces trying to send clothing and other basic goods to her family. “What we want for Cuba is food, and liberty.” Her husband dismissed her. “Ah, forget about liberty. We want food.” SNT

QUICK TAKE

“Would I let my child play in a school field near (a fracked well)? . . . The answer is no,” said state Commissioner of Health Howard Zucker, who is childless.

"We spent four years to prove something that we knew when I came to Syracuse in 1980," said Don Siegel. Michael Davis photo

FRACKING DECISION: ACTIVIST VICTORY, POLITICAL BS, OR BOTH?

E

mily Bishop says she cried when she heard the news from Albany that New York was banning hydrofracking. As she watched the live stream of the governor’s cabinet meeting on Dec. 17, she and friends in the movement traded messages back and forth tracking the discussion. When the state’s health commissioner, Howard Zucker, announced that he had ruled against the oil and gas industry’s quest to frack parts of the state to exploit oil in the Marcellus Shale, Bishop’s tears began to flow. “I almost couldn’t breathe,” she said in a phone interview days later. Across the continent, while attending a conference of the American Geophysical Union, in San Francisco, Don Siegel also felt like crying, but he says, for a different reason. “I felt like crying because the science was being distorted,” said Siegel, a professor of earth science at Syracuse University. Siegel, who has served as an adviser to oil and gas companies and appeared in pro-fracking television ads, said the decision was based in politics. “Science has very little to do with it,” said Siegel. “I’ve found the whole experience in getting involved in a political hot topic fascinating,” but in the end he views it as a pointless waste of his time and professional energy. “We spent four

12.24.14 - 12.30.14 | syracusenewtimes.com

years to prove something that we knew when I came to Syracuse in 1980. Water quality was a non-issue from the start. The earthquakes, the broad water chemistry problems — this hype, it’s been BS from the beginning.” So what’s next for the fracking activists? Bishop, who worked full time in opposition to fracking, recently switched jobs and works as an organizer for Syracuse United Neighbors. She says that job one for the movement is to “thank New York State,” both for banning fracking and for its many initiatives in clean energy. The movement against fracking mobilized thousands of people on a complex and controversial issue — the state Department of Environmental Conservation received an unheard-of 250,000 comments on its proposed fracking framework — and she sees that as a base for continued organizing. “There are other fights going on to chip away at the infrastructure of the gas economy and to support renewable energy,” she said. Siegel still plans to go ahead and publish what

he says is the largest study on water quality near fracked wells, which he says will contradict studies with smaller sample sizes that are often quoted by opponents of fracking. Like Gov. Andrew Cuomo, he said that this was the most emotional issue he’d ever heard. He said that the decision was based on “absurdities” and went as far as to call the claims made in the movement’s signature film, Gasland, “BS.” Bishop acknowledges that New York becoming the only state with shale gas to turn its back on hydrofracking is a symbolic victory, but “incredibly symbolic.” “It’s not gonna make a whit of difference in respect to the national gas portfolio,” said Siegel. “It’s not going to make a whit of difference in climate change. It’s the ultimate NIMBY (not in my backyard) decision. Some people are concerned with having those north-south roads clogged with water trucks. What’s sad is that those folks don’t want to talk about how we could do both. If the antifrackers had been up front and said, ‘We don’t want it ’cause we don’t want rigs, we don’t want noise, we want life the way we like it and yet we also want the benefits of natural gas being produced elsewhere,’ I would have been OK. Don’t distort the science, don’t make believe.” Meanwhile, said Bishop, leaders in the anti-fracking movement are fielding inquiries from all over the world from people who want to learn how New Yorkers kept the practice out of their state. FOWLER GRADUATE COMES HOME If you believe that people vote with their feet, then Emad Rahim and his family just voted for Syracuse. “Life is a lot more laid back here,” says Emad Rahim, just a few weeks after coming home from Chicago, where he had lived for nearly three years. “I control my own time. I can have coffee with friends. I can work early, work late. I couldn’t afford to do that there.” Until September, Rahim was the university dean of Colorado Tech University, based in the Windy City. The six-figure salary he earned came with a price: lots of time spent on the road visiting the for-profit college’s far flung campuses, attending workshops and conferences. He felt squeezed financially by “a city that just takes your money” and even more so, hungry for the time he used to spend with his wife and two children. Syracuse’s relatively mellow pace and lower cost of living combined with Rahim’s desire to raise his kids near his mother and family to tip the scales and make him want to come home. He knows it’s a gamble, but he’s ready to invest in his hometown. “In Chicago,” says Rahim. “I lived uptown. We had a private condo on the third floor. I could see Lake Michigan across Lakeshore Drive. Wrigley Field was a 10 minute walk.” As much as he wanted to live out his dream of making it in a large city, Rahim found himself living paycheck to paycheck and seeing his kids only on weekends. “You get to that age when you’re raising your own kids and you’re lacking that sense of safety and comfort.” All these thoughts led to the decision to take a lower-paying job that involved less travel and to relocate back to the Salt City. He is an associate professor and program director at Bellevue University, in Nebraska. He’ll have to travel to Omaha six times a year, but most of his work can be accomplished online. This is hardly the first time Rahim has migrated with safety in mind. Born in Cambodia, he fled with his mother to avoid that country’s upheaval in the 1980s, when the Khmer Rouge took pow-

er and killed upward of 4 million people, including Rahim’s father. His journey took him to Brooklyn, where he survived a gunshot wound in a street fight as an 8-year-old boy. His mother brought the family to Syracuse and raised him and his sister on Gifford Street. At Fowler, he overcame a learning disability and has since gone on to earn a doctorate in entrepreneurship studies. He lectures nationwide, runs a fund to promote community development in his home country and has founded startup companies. Now turning 35, he defines success differently, and he is eager to give back. “I miss Chicago,” he says. “It’s a large, energetic, diverse community that we will never have here.” But he is tired of people asking him why he would return to Syracuse. “Instead of celebrating our return, people were concerned. They asked what was wrong, why we were coming back. We have to get young people involved by getting their role models involved. We have to focus on praising the good things here.” His main concern is the state of the city’s schools. When his then-8-year-old daughter began school in Chicago, she was far behind her classmates. “She was an A student leaving here

(Syracuse) in third grade, and I was shocked at how far behind she was.” His daughter attends Ed Smith Pre-K-8 School “for now” and is considering applying to the Syracuse Academy of Science (SAS) charter school. The state of public education was an issue in Chicago, as well. Rahim spent an hour each way driving his 11-year-old daughter to a private school because two of the three public schools in his neighborhood were slated to be closed for poor performance. The third admitted students

by lottery, and his daughter didn’t win. He started to wonder if he could afford to send two girls to private school. Back home in Syracuse, Rahim was impressed at the accessibility of school district officials. During his school search, he met with both Syracuse Superintendent Sharon Contreras and Tolga Hayali, superintendent of the SAS. It’s that sense of scale and a family-friendly environment that he hopes will draw more people like him back into the town he calls home. SNT

QUICK TAKE

'Twas the prep for Augustus; his colonoscopy at Crouse . . . Send submissions to: Gov Andrew Cuomo.

Want to try your hand at parodying "The Night Before Christmas"? I'll give you a head start:

You don't need to be techinically "alive" to enjoy Christmas.

Then eight other supermodels appeared in the cellar. “Come here, girls,” said Gisele. “We found us some fellers. Now Heidi, now Candice! You too, Alessandra. On Kate, on Miranda! Move your tush, Adriana! The rest of you, too, don’t delay, what the heck? That means you, Ms. Kurkova, and you, Alek Wek! To the living room first. Bring the stuff from the mall! I hope these nice gentlemen like their elves tall.” “But the place is a mess . . .” I started to say. “But you’re men,” Giselle cooed. “It’s always this way.” Just then Dan emerged looking tired and drugged. “Hate to tell ya, supermodels, but our crapper is plugged. We probably should snake it, plus the flapper valve’s loose. My advice to you, ladies: Don’t drop a deuce.” “No worries,” they said, with faces of glee. “We’re Christmas Eve miracles: We don’t even pee!” Then the nine supermodels got down to business. They cleaned and they decorated, as God is our witness. We stood there and watched them and could not believe what had become of our Christmas Eve. The scent of mulled cider soon filled our manse. “What the F*^&*!” exclaimed Fred in his underpants.

WITH APOLOGIES TO CLEMENT MOORE … OR MAYBE HENRY LIVINGSTON JR.

T

his season I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a column on the theme: What if men were in charge of Christmas? I ended up writing an entirely original poem that pays tribute to the contributions of both genders during this special holiday time:

ʼTwas the night before Christmas, or maybe six days; no calendar was visible through the Cohiba haze.

When from down in the basement there arose such a clatter, I turned off my bowl game to see what was the matter.

The stockings were hung in the shower with care; in hopes that the cleaning lady would one day be there.

“Who the Hell goes there?” I yelled down the stairwell. “You better speak up, or start sayin’ your farewells.”

A few guys were sleeping, though not in their beds, while visions of porn stars danced in their heads. While Harley the Rott mix chewed a stuffed elf, and eyed a half ham sub left on a shelf. 12.24.14 - 12.30.14 | syracusenewtimes.com

They turned off the ball game, though the score was a tie. Candice decreed, “Let’s make eggnog pie!” They brought in a tree; o how it did twinkle. Supermodels or not, I felt myself shrinkle. They hung tinsel and cherubs, a red Christmas lark. They made gingerbread punch with my Maker’s Mark. Kevin whispered to me, “What’s the frickin’ occasion?” “Part Christmas,” I answered, "and part home invasion.” And then on my shoulder I felt a light tap. “Merry Christmas,” Gisele said. “You’ve got prezzies to wrap.” She looked smokin’ hot, in her little red suit, as she dumped at my feet a big bag of loot. I stared at the items spilling out of her pack. “Get the hell out,” I said, “and never come back!” “It’s Christmas,” she glowered, showing no fear. “Try my pfeffernüsse cookies. They’re without peer.” Then she snuggled against me amidst all the strife, and purred: “Now we will watch It’s a Wonderful Life!"

Right then it was clear that the battle was lost. We had to get out, whatever the cost. The light from a bare bulb cast barely a flicker; If not for the snow tires on Dave’s Ford Aspire, it revealed stacks of empties on chairs made of wicker. they’d have roasted our chestnuts on an open fire. When onto what sight did my besotted eyes glom, Dave floored it hard, and we fled out of sight. but a young Gisele Bundchen Harley came too, howling into the night. — before she met Tom. But as we were leaving, I heard one of them jeer, Her come-hither look was so lively and quick; “Only 366 days till Christmas next year.” SNT I reached for my holster, thinking this was a trick.

Syracuse Singers Soar on New CDs

T

hree fine vocalists wax eloquent on material ranging from Cole Porter and Ruth Etting to Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. These new discs showcasing some of Central New York’s best singers would make perfect last-minute stocking stuffers, or after-holiday purchases with gift cards.

Nick Ziobro. A Lot of Livin’ to Do (Titanium Entertainment). Manlius wunderkind Ziobro scores out of the chute, swingin’ like mad on his debut disc. The baker’s dozen tracks pulsate and percolate under the sharp-eared supervision of musical director and pianist Tedd Firth helming an all-pro sextet featuring venerable guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. Firth also wrote the arrangements, which make the six musicians sound like 18, giving Ziobro an orchestral foundation that functions like a launching pad. The young man simply plugs in and blasts off. Take Ruth Etting’s 1931 hit, “All of Me.” Nick, who recorded this when he was still 17 years old, takes it to a new level. First he delivers the rarely heard intro verse and then — pumped up by Pizzarelli, bassist Jay Leonhart, drummer Ray Marchica, trumpeter Brian Pareschi and saxophonist Marc Phaneuf — he swings “All of Me” for all it’s worth. Produced by Ziobro’s Manhattan mentor, Michael Feinstein, at Nola Recording Studios in New York City, every track aptly showcases Nick’s full-bodied vocals, clever phrasing and overall joie de vivre. Favorite selections include Jimmy Van Heusen’s “Here’s 12.24.14 - 12.30.14 | syracusenewtimes.com

That Rainy Day,” Gershwin’s “How Long Has This Been Going On?” and a hot and cocksure “Too Close for Comfort.” Ziobro, who turned 18 in July, is now studying musical theater at Rider University in New Jersey. The CD is only available via his website, nick-ziobro.com, but digital copies can be purchased at the usual online retail sites. Nancy Kelly. B That Way (Blue Bay Records). Thirty years ago, Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammy) Hall of Famer Kelly honed her vocals accompanied by a variety of Hammond organists at Jewel’s, a salt-and-mostly-pepper nightclub on Broad Street. When she returned to Central New York, she worked more often with pianists. One of them was Dino Losito. One day, Losito switched his keyboard to the Hammond B-3 sound, and a light bulb flashed. The result is this dynamic 12-track disc featuring Losito on the Hammond organ. While tenor saxman Jerry Welden and guitarist Peter Bernstein get a fair share of lead action on the instrumental breaks, Losito makes the organ growl, notably on “Come Back to Me” and the boppy “Billie’s

Bounce.” Losito also plays the bass lines while Buffalo-born Carmen Intorre keeps time on the drums. Kelly and Losito both turn up the heat on ballads like “Common Touch” and “Good Morning Heartache,” and turn in a delightful, devil-may-care version of “Please Don’t Talk about Me When I’m Gone,” an apt homage to two of Kelly’s big influences, Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae. Recorded at Tedesco Studios in Paramus, N.J., and mixed at Hobin Studios in Baldwinsville, B That Way shows off Nancy Kelly the way she is: a self-assured artist with a heart of gold and the voice of a hep archangel. Visit nancykelly.com for details. Scott Dennis. Close Your Eyes (independent). One of Nancy Kelly’s most promising voice students, Scott Dennis, wisely hired three of Syracuse’s best jazzmen — keyboardist Dave Solazzo, bassist Mike Solazzo and drummer Jimmy Johns — to record this 10-tune debut disc. Scott’s rich baritone does jubilant justice to chestnuts like Arlen and Mercer’s “That Old Black Magic” and Cole Porter’s “Just One of Those Things.” Yet Dave Solazzo nearly steals the spotlight with his ever-inventive piano breaks on uptempo numbers such as “Hey There” and “Sunday in New York.” He can play it dreamy, too, on slower tunes like “Close Your Eyes” and “A Time for Love.” Mike Solazzo adds a very hip bass solo to the slightly suggestive title tune, and Mike and drummer Johns kick off “Just One of Those Things” with a nifty bass-and-cymbal intro. Dennis demonstrates a flair for improvising along with his sidemen, as with their fascinating version of Kern and Mercer’s “I’m Old Fashioned,” embellished with Johns’ Caribbean rhythms and Dave Solazzo’s kickin’ keys. The Dennis disc was produced by Nancy Kelly at SubCat Studio; to buy a copy, email blidnbombshell@gmail.com or call 422-4226. Scott Dennis often sings with the Rhythm-Airs big band every Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Camillus Elks Club. SNT

QUICK TAKe

There was so much good stuff on television in 2014 that it wouldn’t all fit in this issue. Check next week’s New Times for items 6 through 10.

THE BEST OF Television IN 2014 It has been a great year for television. (Spoilers abound below. Proceed with caution.)

1

True Detective

It may be predictable to pop True Detective at the top of my best of 2014 list, but it truly was what started this year on a good note. The ambitious semi-supernatural mystery premiered just after the new year and was a good omen (even with all of its internal bad omens) for a great year of television. Matthew McConaughey, heretofore known as Mister Eye Candy, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in True Detective. king of the rom com, came in swinging a different kind of punch. HIMYM finale

Perhaps no television finale since the religion-tinged final moment of Lost has been as divisive as the How I Met Your Mother finale, also in March. After nine seasons of keeping us on the hook, Ted finally revealed how he met her … and then she died, and he got permission to, some might say (including me), finally end up with his true soulmate, Robin. Whatever your opinion of the shocking twist, the series is still on the tip of our tongues when naming the most innovative premises and consistently entertaining series in recent memory.

5Last Week Tonight

In the summer of 2013, Jon Stewart took a break from The Daily Show to direct his first feature film, Rosewater, a drama based on the true story of a Canadian journalist detained in Iraq. In his absence, correspondent John Oliver stepped in for six weeks. Though Oliver’s particular brand of matter-offact humor didn’t quite work against Stewart’s usual energy, the gig piqued our interest in Oliver as a late-night host. In April, Oliver began his own stint as a full-time host on HBO’s Last Week Tonight. The Sunday night weekly news satire program has gained critical acclaim for its bold statements made in longer-form segments than TDS or The Colbert Report. His segment on net neutrality included a call to take advantage of the public comment opportunity on the proposed legal changes. It went viral, crashing the FCC website (tinyurl.com/ ohp6rxf). Oliver has continued his brilliant commentary, leading some to argue that this new, smarter model is in fact the future of news satire. SNT

Sony Pictures Entertainment said Tuesday The Interview will have a limited theatrical release beginning Thursday, CBS News TAKe reported. CEO Michael Lynton said the film “will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day” and that Sony is continuing efforts to release the film on more platforms and in more theaters.

INTERVIEW CANCELED Someday, this plot might make a good movie. A bunch of hackers infiltrate the innermost sanctum of the major Hollywood studio’s digital system and gather all sorts of private information about stars and honchos, the kind of stuff the celebrity-mad public is just dying to know. So they leak it to the press, which studio heads then try to prevent from making public. Movies not yet released are made available for people to pirate. A comedy with political ramifications on the eve of release earns the ire of the hackers, who deliver threats that deeds of 9/11 proportions will come upon anybody who dares proceed with showings. I wonder if Sony’s top brass think it could make any money down the road with a story along such lines? Of course, that would be art imitating life, because all of the above has been building momentum in front of our eyes these past weeks. What started as a bad scene for the movie world when it was first reported on Nov. 24 that Sony Pictures got hacked has cascaded down the mountain like an avalanche. Now the threats from the hackers center on the release of The Interview, a comedy that stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as a loopy anchorman and producer who score an interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un — and then are requested by the U.S. government to assassinate him. The film was screened in LA on Dec. 11 without incident, but hackers threatened violence if the New York City screening were held, according to a story by Variety. Theater officials canceled that screening. Rogen and Franco have also canceled all media appearances to promote the film. The wide release of the film was scheduled for Christmas Day, and Sony stuck up for its film as long as it could, refusing to pull the plug. But then the five major film chains — including Regal, which owns the mega-complexes in Destiny USA, Shoppingtown and Great Northern — said they would not show The Interview, forcing Sony Pictures’ hand. The studio canceled the film’s opening.

The hacking and threats have been linked by law enforcement to the North Korean government. Some plot, huh? Oh, and back to what would have would have been of major import to movie lovers before the political ramifications shook loose: A story in the New York Times also calls the situation a possible game-changer regarding the climate of first-release to theaters vs. at-home outlets. Just one of the debts Mark Wahlberg’s character racks up in The Gambler, the remake of the 1974 James Caan film.

It wouldn’t have been Toy Story 3 sad, this parting in the third installment of the Night at the Museum franchise, except for outside influences. The fact that Robin Williams was making his last on-screen performance as Teddy Roosevelt was the factor that pulled me into the Regal chain’s Shoppingtown theater for a matinee of Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. And so, yes, when Williams as rough rider Teddy and Mizuo Peck as his lady Sacajawea waved farewell to Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley in this caper written by David Guion and Michael Handelman and directed by Shawn Levy, I indeed got the lump in the throat. When Levy’s credits rolled there was a tribute to Williams. He committed suicide in August and was suffering from Parkinson’s disease when he was making this film. During the film, Williams surely was fun as Teddy, romping through another museum with this cast of familiar silly come-to-lifers under the guidance of the security guard who discovered their secret back in the original and polished it up in the first sequel. In this one, they’ve discovered that their power is fading, and Larry sleuths the cause in London, where they cavort with a new cast of rebirthers. There’s enough plot and slapstick to keep the 97 minutes marching right along crisply. Heroes become villains. Real stars show up in a London theater. Hello, Hugh Jackman. Villains become heroes. Real people learn from wax figures. Nice lesson, here. Thanks, Teddy. Goodbye, Robin.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19). “Hell is the suf-

fering of being unable to love,” wrote novelist J.D. Salinger. Using that definition, I’m happy to announce that you have a good chance of avoiding hell altogether in 2015. If there has been any deficiency in your power to express and bestow love, I think you will correct it. If you have been so intent on getting love that you have been neglectful in giving love, you will switch your focus. I invite you to keep a copy of this horoscope in your wallet for the next 12 months. Regard it as your “Get Out of Hell Free” card.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Beetles are abun-

dant and ubiquitous. Scientists have identified more than 350,000 species, and they are always discovering new ones. In 2011, for example, they conferred official recognition on 3,485 additional types of beetles. I’m seeing a parallel development in your life, Taurus. A common phenomenon that you take for granted harbors mysteries that are worth exploring. Something you regard as quite familiar actually contains interesting features you don’t know about. In 2015, I hope you will open your mind to the novelties and exotica that are hidden in plain sight.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20). Auguste Escoffier (1846-1935) was an influential French chef who defined and standardized the five “mother sauces.” But he wasn’t content to be a star in his own country. At age 44, he began his “conquest of London,” bringing his spectacular dining experience to British restaurants. He thought it might be hard to sell his new clientele on frogs’ legs, a traditional French dish, so he resorted to trickery. On the menu, he listed it as “Nymphs of the Dawn.” According to my reading of the omens, this is an example of the hocus-pocus that will be your specialty in 2015. And I suspect you will get away with it every time as long as your intention is not selfish or manipulative, but rather generous and constructive. CANCER (June 21-July 22). The entomolo-

gist Charles P. Alexander (1889-1981) devoted much of his professional life to analyzing the insect known as the crane fly. He identified more than 11,000 different species, drew 15,000 illustrations of the creatures, and referred to his lab as “Crane Fly Haven.” That’s the kind of single-minded intention I’d love to see you adopt during the first six months of 2015, Cancerian. What I’m imagining is that you will choose a specific, well-defined area within which you will gleefully explore and experiment and improvise. Is there a subject or task or project you would have fun pursuing with that kind of intensity?

by Rob Brezsny

Thompson, “that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.” In 2015, I invite you to adopt some of that push-it-tothe-edge attitude for your personal use, Libra. Maybe not full time; maybe not with the same manic intensity that Thompson did. Rather, simply tap into it as needed -- whenever you’ve got to up your game or raise your intensity level or rouse the extra energy you need TO ACHIEVE TOTAL, WONDROUS, RESOUNDING VICTORY! The coming months will be your time to go all the way, hold nothing back, and quest for the best and the most and the highest.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Twenty miles long, the Onyx River is the longest body of moving water on the continent of Antarctica. Most of the year it’s ice, though. It actually flows for just two or three months during the summer. Let’s hope that continues to be the case for the foreseeable future. It would be a shame if global warming got so extreme that the Onyx melted permanently. But now let’s talk about your own metaphorical equivalent of the Onyx: a potentially flowing part of your life that is often frozen. I’d love to see it heat up and thaw. I’d love it to be streaming and surging most of the time. And in 2015, I think that’s a distinct possibility. Consider making the following declaration your battle cry: I am the Flow Master! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “The best

way to keep a prisoner from escaping is to make sure he never knows he’s in prison.” That quote is attributed to both Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky and Russian author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Regardless of who said it, I urge you to keep it in mind throughout 2015. Like all of us, you are trapped in an invisible prison: a set of beliefs or conditioned responses or bad habits that limit your freedom to act. That’s the bad news. The good news is that in the coming months, you are poised to discover the exact nature of your invisible prison, and then escape it.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) When he was 37, actor Jack Nicholson found out that Ethel May, the woman he had always called his mother, was in fact his grandma. Furthermore, his “older sister” June was actually his mom, who had given birth to him when she was 17. His relatives had hidden the truth from him. I suspect that in 2015 you will uncover secrets and missing information that will rival Nicholson’s experience. Although these revelations may initially be confusing or disruptive, in the long run they will heal and liberate you. Welcome them!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) In Don DeLillo’s novel Underworld, Cotter Martin is a young boy living in New York City in the 1950s. The following description is about him. “In school they tell him sometimes to stop looking out the window. This teacher or that teacher. The answer is not out there, they tell him. And he always wants to say that’s exactly where the answer is.” I propose we regard this passage as one of your themes in 2015, Leo. In other words, be skeptical of any authority who tells you where you should or should not be searching for the answers. Follow your own natural inclination, even if at first it seems to be nothing more than looking out the window.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “Meupareunia”

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “It is always important to know when something has reached its end,” writes Paulo Coelho in his book The Zahir. Use this advice heroically in 2015, Virgo. Wield it to clear away anything that no longer serves you, that weighs you down or holds you back. Prepare the way for the new story that will begin for you around your next birthday. “Closing circles, shutting doors, finishing chapters,” Coelho says, “it doesn’t matter what we call it; what matters is to leave in the past those moments in life that are over.”

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “Be good and

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “On some nights I still believe,” said rascal journalist Hunter S.

is an English word that refers to a sexual adventure in which only one of the participants has a good time. I’ll be bold and predict that you will not experience a single instance of meupareunia in 2015. That’s because I expect you’ll be steadily upgrading your levels of empathy and your capacity for receptivity. You will be getting better and better at listening to your intimate allies and reading their emotional signals. I predict that synergy and symbiosis will be your specialties. Both your desire to please and your skill at giving pleasure will increase, as will your understanding of how many benefits you can reap by being a responsive partner. you will be lonesome,” said Mark Twain. Do you agree? I don’t -- at least as it applies to your life in 2015. According to my understanding of the long-term astrological omens, you will attract an abundance of love and luck by being good -- by expressing generosity, deepening your compassion, cultivating integrity, and working for justice and truth and beauty. That doesn’t mean you should be a pushover or doormat. Your resolve to be good must be leavened by a determination to deepen your self-respect. TONINO LAMBORGHINI TO RELEASE $6,000 SMARTPHONE

T

he son of the owner of the popular luxury sports car company recently announced the release of a new smartphone, called the Tauri 88, with a price tag of six grand.

Why so expensive? It’s not really, since its target market is billionaires only, and only 2,000 devices will be made, making it almost impossible for a regular Joe to open a second mortgage and get his hands on it. According to Forbes.com, there are only 1,542 billionaires, which leaves 458 phones for the “rest of us.” But it is any good? Built with an Android body, it’s leather bound around Gorilla Glass and hand-hewn stainless steel and boasts hyper harddrive, speed and battery capacity.

3D Printing Day at SU

Dan Pacheco’s class at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University had some fun before winter break by 3D scanning and printing “exact replicas” of their heads. The technology, according to Isaac Budmen, SU grad and co-author of The Book on 3D Printing, will permeate most every aspect of American home life in the next two to three decades. 12.24.14 - 12.30.14 | syracusenewtimes.com

The Smithsonian revealed a video of how President Obama became the first U.S. president with a 3D-printed bust using multi-angle cameras or scanners. Technology is ever embarking on a new era.

The Future Of Smart Eyewear

Sony announced that it will be coming out with a clip-on version of Google Glass in 2016 that will project a display two feet in front of the user as opposed to directly onto the eyewear. After Glass’ enthusiasm bubble burst, Google is back to the drawing board, this time with Intel, with plans to reveal a new product next year. Problems everyone is trying to overcome: the bionic geek look, the resistance of the general public to being around people with the capacity to constantly upload their visual video feed to the Web, and the overall and constant interruption of life in general. “The average smartphone user checks their phone every six minutes, or 150 times a day,” said William

Ward, professor of social media and Hootesuite director of education at Newhouse. With Glass-like tech, there’s no pulling out your phone, but neither can you put it away. It’s only a matter of time before we see some widespread solutions to these problems.

LinkedIn Changes Things Up

The world’s third-largest social network noticed a decline in user engagement and decided to spice things up a bit: tweaking its interface to cater to users’ activity. The idea is to feed into what always works: vanity. LinkedIn users’ profile stats are going to be enlarged front and center. Moreover, the homepage will present fewer options, narrowing them based on an analysis of an individual’s activity, trying to anticipate what that user wants to see today — a feat every effective social network is trying to achieve. The social giant also launched its Connected app as a personal assistant that syncs with your smartphone contacts and acts as an active Rolodex, suggesting new connections and activity. new healthy, fast food option

G

obble, gobble! It’s the holiday season, which means festivities are on tap and food is everywhere. It’s easy to abandon good intentions and healthy eating and give in to poor food choices, especially when we’re busy.

That’s where Fork2Fit comes in. Fork2Fit is a meal preparation and delivery service whose mission is to provide customers with meals that are healthy, delicious and convenient. Meals are delivered to several locations (including Urban Life CrossFit, Edge Strength and Conditioning and others) two times a week, or customers can pick them up. Most meals are in the 500-calorie range and cost $8 to $11, according to Fork2Fit co-owner Pete Bardou. Bardou and three friends — Joe Dattelas, Robert Halpin and Craig Romano — launched Fork2Fit in August. Dattelas and Halpin own J&J Pizzeria, in Marcellus, where the meals are prepared. Romano is the co-owner of Fresh Mex, in Baldwinsville. Until recently, Bardou served as recreation supervisor for Sullivan town Parks and Recreation Department. He left that position to devote more time and energy to the company. All of the business owners lead busy lives, and find it a challenge to plan meals, shop for ingredients and get healthy meals on the table on a regular basis, Bardou says. They were surprised to learn there were

no meal prep and delivery options in Central New York with a focus on healthy, “clean food.’’ So they stepped in to fill a void. “You come home, and you’re hungry,’’ Bardou says. “But when you don’t have time to cook, you have a tough time staying consistent with healthy eating.’’ How does Fork2Fit work? Go to the website (fork2fit.com) and look over the heat-and-eat menu options. Select the meals you want to order and choose between standard and premium (organic, grass-fed, free-range meat) and deluxe size (4 to 6 ounces protein) and athlete size (8 to 10 ounces protein). Select delivery/pickup (minimum purchase for delivery is four meals). Orders for Thursday pickup/delivery must be placed by Monday and orders for Monday pickup must be placed by Thursday. The Fork2Fit menu includes about a dozen items, with new items introduced regularly. Customer favorites include spiedie chicken wraps, mini meatloaves with garlic mashed cauliflower, dry-braised pulled chicken thighs and steak with brown rice and

Utica greens. In the mood for something sweet? Cookies and other treats from Avocadough are available at checkout. (See the July 30, 2014, issue of the Syracuse New Times.) Fork2Fit meals are popular with CrossFit workout enthusiasts and people who adhere to paleo diets but are designed for anyone who wants to eat more healthily, Bardou says. “Our customers are people who have busy lifestyles and don’t have time to cook for themselves,’’ he says. A couple of law school students at Syracuse University take advantage of the “bulk order” option and request 20 meals at a time, he notes. Bardou, a new father, says he packed on some pounds during his wife’s pregnancy earlier this year and that he’s trying to take some weight off. On a recent weekday, he was looking forward to a Fork2Fit lunch of brown rice pesto pasta with balsamic chicken. “I have one in the fridge right now,’’ he says. “I eat one of our meals every day, and so does my wife.’’ Fork2Fit meals are also available in a grab-and-go case at Natur-Tyme, 3160 Erie Blvd. E., DeWitt.
