The year in the arts in Central New York By Syracuse New Times staff

STARTING POINT One of the most popular subjects covered by the Syracuse New Times hasn’t yet made it into print.

It’s also one that generates passionate opinions. When publisher Bill Brod started a video blog a few weeks back, the first questions were about our UFO blog, New York Skies. One called it ridiculous; the other wanted more of it. You can find New York Skies at www.syracusenewtimes. com. One thing that makes it different, and a reason it remains online and not in print, is its broad geographic reach. People around the world who have an interest in UFOs have found it online and are regular readers; it’s among our most viewed content. The writer, Cheryl Costa, will speak in February at the International UFO Congress, near Phoenix, Ariz. The event website calls it the premier event of the year for UFO researchers, enthusiasts and the people with an interest in mysterious phenomena. This is its 24th anniversary. When I was a boy, I was for a time engrossed Photography by by books about UFOs by Michael Davis, Frank Edwards. Now, I suppose, Cover design by I’m a UFO skeptic. That should Caitlin O’Donnell come as no surprise: Journalists are skeptical about nearly everything. Common sense tells me that if aliens visited Earth, they wouldn’t lurk for years without announcing themselves. When I drive five hours What’s buzzing to Providence to see the in-laws, I the most. don’t park on the street and look at the house. After the trip, I want to get on with what I came for. I imagine it would be the same if I had just finished crossing the galaxy. So, will New York Skies Follow us make it to the pages of the @syracusenew times.com New Times? I remain undecided. It’s a popular blog, but it seems to have found its audience online. And I’m reluctant to squeeze out other content to make room for it. But the congress is a creation of Write to us at Open Minds Productions. Keep editorial@ an open mind, and you never syracusenew know. times.com or 1415 W. Walter Fisher filed a $100,000 lawsuit against Ontario’s William Osler Health System, which oversees Brampton Civic Hospital, as well as his doctor and several people and companies connected with the television show Saving Hope. Fisher said a man and woman watching the doctor perform his rectal exam were wearing medical attire but, he later learned, were really actors on the show. While lying on his back, “he could feel more than one set of hands on him,” Fisher’s lawyer said. (Toronto Sun)

City officials removed a $559,000 sculpture from outside a recreation center in Calgary, Alberta, after it caused the sun to singe an art lover’s jacket. “It’s a beautiful, shiny object, and that, I think, is part of the problem,” Sarah Iley, the city’s art and cultural manager, said. The steel artwork, titled “Wishing Well,” has hollow hemispheres for people to enter and send it text messages, which it translates into a light and sound display. Iley said the mirrored concave interior directed an intense, narrow ray at the visitor’s jacket. The incident prompted officials to return the sculpture to the artist to fix it. (Calgary Herald)

Haberdashery Follies Traffic Court Truck driver Gary Anderson, 58, died at a construction site in Jersey City, N.J., after being hit on the head by a one-pound tape measure that fell from a worker’s tool belt on the 50th floor. A public safety official said Anderson wasn’t wearing a hard hat. (Associated Press)

After their 15-year-old daughter was killed when the driver of the SUV she was riding in lost control while going nearly 90 miles per hour, Ronald and Tammy Coburn sued Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation. They claimed it contributed to the girl’s death because road signs didn’t adequately warn of curves ahead. A Luzerne County jury sided with the parents and assigned 10 percent of the responsibility to PennDOT and the other 90 percent to driver Scott Smith. (Moosic’s WNEP-TV)

Firefighters used jackhammers to partially dismantle a brick chimney where Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa, 30, was trapped eight feet down for two hours. Rescuers in Ventura County, Calif., lubricated the chimney with dish soap, then pulled NunezFigueroa from the chimney and lowered her to the ground with a ladder truck. Sheriff’s Capt. Renee Ferguson said the woman had dated the homeowner multiple times after they met online but her “intent was unclear.” (Los Angeles’s KTLA-TV)

CHANGES LIE AHEAD IN 2015 My friend Walt Shepperd, when he used to share this space with the late Karen DeCrow in alternate issues of the New Times, lamented on the difficulty of keeping time in 14-day increments. “Nothing happens every two weeks,” said Walt, who still writes for us whenever we can coax him out of his Gifford Street lair. Things happen every day, every hour, every week and every month. The beauty of the seven-day work week is that it gives you a chance to organize your plans and your thoughts, to look forward and to look back, and to decide what matters, and which of the many competing thoughts, actions and ideas that have come your way are worth your continued attention, and which ones should skip off back into space. And then Sunday comes, and you get up and do it all over again. When you put together 52 weeks, you take a great big breath and think through the past year and into the weeks to come. The great privilege of writing this column is that I get to listen to so many of you. It doesn’t matter as much whether we agree or not, but my hope is that we are moving some sort of conversation forward. My favorite readers are conservative Republican friends who enjoy the conversation and are willing to challenge me as I challenge them. The least interesting folks are the kind who assume that they can infer what I think about abortion or fracking from what I say about racism or police brutality. If Sanity Fair had a motto, it would be this: I don’t care what you think, but I do care that you think. Come 2015, I’ll be continuing the Sanity Fair column, but for at least a few months I’ll be laying down my reporter’s notebook and turning my attention to a

“ I don’t care what you think, but I do care that you think.” long-delayed book project. When spring comes, I’m hoping to be back covering stories of interest to you, so keep those sharp questions and story ideas in mind, you can always send them to me at edgriffin@twcny.rr.com or pass them on to Larry at ldietrich@syracusenewtimes.com. Find A Teacher, And Say, ‘Thank You’ If I got to nominate a Person of the Year (and I don’t), it would be no contest. It would be the Syracuse city school teacher. The teacher’s work epitomizes the hope for our community and the many hurdles we must clear. Teachers straddle the many fault lines that divide us, and many of them feel that they do it with minimal support. Too much of what we read about teachers has to do with how we evaluate them, criticize them or compensate them. But the truth is they hold

our city together, they nurture our children as they educate them and they give endlessly of their time and energy. Whenever I feel like I’m losing hope, I think of the teachers I know who get up every day and go to work. There is no harder job. There is no role more essential. Today, we should simply thank them. Rest up, teachers. Soon it will be time to get back to work.

QUOTE OF A Difficult, THE YEAR But Interesting 2014 Looking back on 2014, my favorite quote was from the Rev. Fred Daley, a Syracuse priest who has been open about his own sexuality (gay) and his choices (celibate) for many years. He serves a community at All Saints Church that includes many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered Catholics, people who haven’t always felt they had a spiritual home. Daley spoke in the midst of a Vatican gathering that tried, but ultimately failed, to put forth a more open attitude toward gay life for the worldwide church. Using a squishy but compelling metaphor, Daley said:

“You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.”

It would be easy to call this a difficult year. New York City buries two young police officers. Eric Garner’s family cries for justice. Our troops creep back into Iraq and spread into Syria to chase ISIL as the “war on terror” becomes a war without end. Our own county feels more and more like it is governed by an invisible apartheid, and the people we put out on the front lines of that divide are the ones we need the most: our teachers and police officers. Yet, if we think back to January, who could have pictured a year ending with New York banning hydrofracking and the Obama administration embracing relations with Cuba? This was the year in which gay marriage became so common as to be boring, and many immigrants long part of our community breathe free without the threat of deportation and being separated from their families. I’ll take it.

KENT IS IN UR FRATZ DRINKIN UR BEERZ KRAMER HAS THE GIFT. SHOULD HE RETURN IT?

M

ost of you know me as an award-winning humor columnist and devastatingly handsome man about town, but I bet you don’t know that I also have The Gift. On New Year’s Eve 2013, I jotted down 10 major predictions for Syracuse for the coming year with the intention of taking them out now to see how I did. In a word: awesome. Other than a few minor details, I got every prediction right: 1. Arena. In a textbook case of multi-jurisdictional cooperation, plans for a new $495 million retractable-roof sports arena will sail through the approval process. An alternative plan to build an amphitheater on a suburban toxic wastebed will be derided as ludicrous and quickly shot down. 2. Syra-rockers. A Syracuse band, Imperfect Penis, will explode on the national stage, blending penetrating lyrics with a relentless pounding beat and wildly exaggerated claims of its prowess. Rolling Stone will gush: “Imperfect Penis plunges us into a dark world fraught with risk but with a sensation of exuberance and adventure that can be downright infectious.” 3. Interstate 81 project. Debate about the future of the I-81 overpass will come to a screeching halt when Destiny USA calls for a surface boulevard to replace the aging structure and pledges millions for its landscaping and maintenance. “We understand that Destiny USA’s experience creates hardship for merchants elsewhere, particularly downtown,” a

mall spokesman will say. “An elegant boulevard that unites our urban core will help to remedy that and benefit the entire region by making Syracuse a more dynamic, inviting destination.” The Destiny spokesman will then pause to wipe away a tear. “We just want to be good neighbors,” he’ll splutter. 4. New chancellor. With Nancy Cantor’s megalomaniacal empire building in the rearview mirror, new SU Chancellor Kent Syverud will provide a breath of fresh air. His quick wit, lack of pretense and dogged refusal to sacrifice the university’s essential character for financial expediency will make him an instant sensation, earning him the nickname “The Pope Francis of the ACC.” Syverud’s cult status will be solidified when he shows up at a fraternity with a liter of tequila and does shots with the brothers every time Coach Jim Boeheim rolls his eyes during a post-game news conference. Students will take to wearing orange T-shirts that depict Otto the Orange in the shape of a beer keg under the caption “Kent State.”

5. Danzer’s German and American Restaurant. Meticulous attention to ingredients, preparation, cleanliness and service will pay off for Danzer’s in a major way as it receives an honorary three-star ranking in the latest edition of Michelin’s Deutschland Guide. “The cheery wait staff, which frequently bursts spontaneously into song, makes dining here feel like a visit to Bavaria,” the guide will state. 6. Destiny hotel. Destiny USA will propose a 275-room hotel without seeking tax breaks, causing a small but statistically significant spike in heart attacks in the area. The event will be submitted to the Vatican for classification as a miracle. 7. Sex ed. The Daily Beast will name the National Tractor Trailer School, in Liverpool, one of the Top 25 sexiest campuses in America. 8. Syracuse football. SU’s high-flying, innovative offense will ensure a major bowl appearance and launch a rebirth of the once-proud program. Offensive Coordinator George “I’m lovin’ it” McDonald will attribute his tactical brilliance to a “profound and intricate grasp of chaos theory” and to regular Skyping sessions with Stephen Hawking. 9. Dan Maffei. Combining his affable nature and straight-shooting approach, Congressman Maffei will coast to re-election. Voters don’t always agree with him, but they know exactly where he stands. 10. Woodsuck. Rumors will swirl that the Carrier Dome has attracted a major show that is so cutting edge and relevant to young people that Syracuse will never again be dismissed as a cultural backwater. Finally, in December, we’ll get the news: A Taste of Herb, a tribute band to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, will play the Dome on March 20, 2015. (OK, I missed that one, but barely.) ON WITH THE SHOWS

Cast members of Syracuse Stage’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Michael Davis photo

Stage critic James MacKillop recalls the premieres, revivals and great performances that took place on local floorboards

T

op among the 2014 highlights in local theater included:

For the intensity of emotion, for the intrusion of laughter through tears, there is unlikely ever to be another evening like the “What I Did for Love” tribute to Talent Company founder Christine Lightcap, held Oct. 16 at the State Fairgrounds’ Empire Theater. Moe Harrington’s “She’s the Greatest Star,” Susan Basile’s “As Long as He Needs Me” and Frank Fiumano losing it in “I Am What I Am” all shook the house. Lightcap’s longtime business partner Brenda Neuss said it had not been one of her better days up until then; the ageless trouper had just 10 days to live. The Redhouse Arts Center’s July announcement of building plans was the best good news of the year. The intimate space at West and Fayette streets, once described as Syracuse’s equivalent to London’s Donmar Warehouse, will expand to fill an area in the former Sibley’s department store on South Salina Street. To be called City Center, the new digs are scheduled to open in late spring 2015. Local girl makes good No. 1. Former Syracuse University student Jessie Mueller received a Tony Award for the lead role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, an unexpected hit. While in town she appeared in the holiday production of Big River (December 2004) and the title role in David Wanstreet’s memorable Kiss Me Kate (April 2005). Local girl makes good No. 2. It’s a stretch to call Australian-born Nadine Malouf “local,” but she made a lasting impression as she passed through town: Urinetown (November 2006), Art of Dining (February 2007), Sweeney Todd (April 2008) and Godspell (December 2008). Last summer at Lincoln Center she had a featured role in The Who & The What, a new play by 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar (Disgraced). Local girl triumphs over local challenges. When artistic differences cancelled Rarely Done Productions’ opening of Stephen Adley Guirgis’

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (April), Carmen Viviano-Crafts was called in on a week’s notice for the huge role of Fabiana, the accused Judas’ defense attorney in the nearly three-hour comedy-drama. She was flawless and commanding. In Rarely Done’s next show, Stephen Sondheim’s Company (June), Viviano-Crafts snagged the choice supporting role of Amy. Her solo performance of “Not Getting Married Today” was a roman candle of comic anxiety, winning her a much-deserved second trophy from the Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) Awards. After rescuing Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse from bankruptcy, turning it into a valued community asset and then expanding the enterprise into the Finger Lakes Musical Theater Festival, artistic director Ed Sayles, the man with a carnation in his hand, abruptly quit on June 4. It was the opening night of Mary Poppins, the most expensive and difficult-to-stage production in the company’s history. Longtime choreographer Brett Smock, who had only recently been hired as associate artistic director, took over the reins immediately. The season went on without a hiccup. Although Meg Waldman’s extensive professional credits included Merry-Go-Round Playhouse (Man of La Mancha, August 2010), she took over as the Hangar Theatre’s artistic director at the beginning of the summer. Central New York’s only two female artistic directors are both in Ithaca: The other is Rachel Lampert of the Kitchen Theatre Company. After 34 years of giving to the community, Geoffrey Navias retired from Open Hand Theater, the big puppet company. Through performance and teaching he touched thousands of lives and left behind the International Mask and Puppet Museum on 518 Prospect Ave., one of the most photogenic structures in town.

Actor Jeff Locker’s many years in Taiwan gave him an authentic accent when speaking Mandarin as the ambiguous translator Timms in David Henry Hwang’s uproarious Chinglish (February) at Syracuse Stage. Although outwardly an unconventional take on culture clash, with unsettling implications, under May Adrales’ direction Chinglish was also the most wet-your-pants hilarious production at Syracuse Stage in 10 years. It was, nonetheless, snubbed by the new SALT Academy. Artistic director Stephen Svoboda’s now annual January adventure in juxtaposition at the Redhouse paired a musical about losing one’s mind and a quirky comedy of domesticity, and invited us to see how one show illuminated the other. Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s prize-winning Next to Normal and Nicky Silver’s lesser-known Pterodactyls could both be staged on the same set with overlapping cast members. Laura Austin took on the heaviest of lifting, learning a hell of a lot of lines, and singing in Next to Normal. The SALT Academy bestowed a top award. In a rare sellout crowd, Syracuse Opera presented an uncut (three hours-plus), partially staged production of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (April). Costumed singers performed the action on stage, right next to the assembled musicians, but without full sets. The entire professional cast was flown in without a weak voice in the crew. Aundie Marie Moore’s tragic “My Man’s Gone Now,” Victor Ryan Robertson’s saucy “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” as well as Brittany Walker’s and later Laquita Mitchell’s

plaintive “Summertime” were all outtasight. It was one of the 10 most satisfying performances of the year. Christopher Durang’s farce Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at Syracuse Stage (September) was anything but brainless. The playwright did, however, expect that audiences remembered as much about Hollywood as they did the plays of Anton Chekhov. The long tirade about licking stamps from Vanya (Larry Paulsen) in the second act confused some audiences; Durand was spoofing obsessiveness and triviality. The sassy housekeeper Cassandra (Lisa Renee Pitts) stole the show from its excellent leads. Rachel Lampert’s electrifying direction of David Ives’ Venus in Fur (January) at Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre thawed the ice out of winter. Brandon Morris wants to stage Kraft-Ebbing’s naughty classic, and Maddie Jo Landers auditions for a key role. Even without rough language or even a second of nudity, it was also the most erotic production of the year (not that it had many rivals). In his most defiant refusal to accept the space limitations at the Redhouse, Stephen Svoboda had Tim Brown construct an onstage wading pool for Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses (May). In the lyrical vignettes, mostly from the Roman poet Ovid, Caitlin Geier stood out as the barefoot choreographer as well as the loving wife Alcyone, along with Caitlyn Oenbrink as the goddess Cere. Jimmy Curtin’s King Midas looked like a hedge fund manager. Syracuse Stage artistic director Tim Bond said he knew he wanted Jonathan Peck for the role of the older, wiser slave Simon in Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man (January), and never bothered to

audition anyone else. It was easy to see why. As the text tells us that the entire household, master and bondsmen, are Jewish, Simon must take over the seder when the master, Caleb (Gregory Perri), a Confederate officer, is wounded on the last day of combat. Peck knew how the formerly oppressed could embrace his former oppressor. The world premiere of Brian Parks’ House (September) at Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre provided one of the three most hilarious evenings of the year. Director Margarett Perry, a specialist in coruscating dialogue, knew how to get the most out of these previously unheard lines. The comfortable, somewhat older couple (Matthew Boston and Elizabeth Meadows Rouse) doesn’t want to turn over their domicile to the grasping youngsters (Matthew Bretschneider and Dana Berger). The only distraction was trying to remember that the now lovely even girlish Ms. Rouse had two years previously been a comic actress of an entirely different mien. She was then the plus-plus size dreadnaught etiquette teacher in Mrs. Mannerly (July 2012). Although the Redhouse’s The Color Purple (December) was professionally produced, it benefited from an influx of new and emerging talent. Beth Henley’s book was faithful to the somewhat wandering structure of Alice Walker’s epistolary novel, making it harder to stage. Director Stephen Svoboda pulled off what no other company has been able to do: He convinced nearly three dozen African American players, many of them local, to trust him in respecting delicate, subtle, potentially explosive relationships. In a year of many successes (like Metamorphoses in May), it was his finest hour. Who was Syracuse Stage’s favored holiday-time author this year? Charles Dickens? Jean Shepherd? No, it was John Waters, the Baltimore auteur dedicated to putting on the straights. The musical version of his Hairspray, about the integration of 1960s-era TV dance shows, was indeed family entertainment. Mary DiGangi’s big-haired and big-hearted Tracy was nonstop energy. Lots of great roles for Syracuse University Drama Department students, too, especially Tristen Buettel as Amber the bad-good girl. But at the end of the year, faculty member Marie Kemp’s “Miss Baltimore Crabs” won’t come off the memory tape. NEXT PAGE

STAGE

Community Theater

This was the year of the Les Miserables boom. First came the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild’s production (January), under youthful director Korrie Taylor, with an enviable capacity for finding strong voices, several previously unknown, for the dozen or so supporting roles. Outstanding, as they had to be, were Henry Wilson (Valjean), Jason Bean (Javert), Danan Tsan (Fantine), Ceara Windhausen (Eponine), Liam Fitzpatrick (Marius) and Josh Taylor and Michaela Oney (the Thenadiers). The energy and excellence of the production convinced the Syracuse New Times that the guild merits serious, close attention. After remaining silent for a few years, David Witanowski’s Wit’s End Players bet the bank on a June mounting at the Mulroy Civic Center’s Carrier Theater. With 14 symphony players and a truckful of authentic-looking, posh costumes, the production was not fully staged but still cost $50,000, one of the most expensive community ventures ever. Director Shannon Tompkins, who had previously helmed high school productions, knew which stops to pull. Josh Mele’s Valjean

14

was a career highlight, and Witanowski’s own Javert laced villainy with tragedy. Top local performers graced important roles: Erin Williamson (Fantine), Marissa Bregande (Eponine), Maya Dwyer (Cosette) and C.J. Roche (Marius). Veterans Jodie Baum and Shawn Forster were so fabulous as the vulgar, loathsome Thenadiers, they should give some thought to putting all their bits together, especially “Master of the House,” into a free-standing cabaret. Dustin Czarny’s Central New York Playhouse in Shoppingtown became the busiest venue in the area with 12 productions (one a world premiere), several cabarets and improvisational shows from Don’t Feed the Actors. Dan Rowlands’ staging of Evil Dead: The Musical (November) was the most outrageous (a “splatter zone” with sprayed raspberry juice), but Stephfond Brunson’s mounting of The Wild Party (May), Andrew Lippa’s portrait of 1920s-era debauchery, was the gutsiest. Leila Dean’s Queenie was one of the most indelible appearances of the year. The triumvirate of companies, including the professional Redhouse and the non-professional Appleseed Pro-

ductions and Rarely Done, launched the second annual District Festival (June), all employing the same set on the tiny Redhouse stage. Unfortunately, the shows were launched on the busiest weekend of the year, with seven shows including the annual Syracuse Stage gala. Although Rarely Done’s Company suffered from a lackluster lead, it was in many ways one of the more brilliant shows of the year. Conspicuous talent in supporting roles included Carmen Viviano-Crafts, Korrie Taylor, Liam Fitzpatrick, Julia Berger, Natalie Paige Goldberg, Lzay Whelan and Catie Bauman. Cathleen O’Brien Brown’s sulfurous “Ladies Who Lunch” has knocked around this reviewer’s memory for the last six months. The epic sweep of Frank Wildhorn’s Civil War seemed least suited to the intimate Redhouse space. So director Sharee Lemos, under the Appleseed flag, yielded the most from intimate solos, such as the grieving Aubry Ludington Panek’s “Five Boys” and soldiers from clashing armies, the Blue (Justin Bird) and Gray (Trevor Hill). Host director Stephen Svoboda brightened the fantasy of the ever-cheerful Frog (Chris Coffey) and downcast Toad (Dan Tursi) in A Year With Frog and Toad with a chorus of 13 in sequins, top hats, canes and feathers. Garrett Heater, the most successful-ever Syracuse-based playwright, stretched his string of hits to four with Lincoln’s Blood (November). Three parallel stories unfold achronologically about couples affected and changed by the assassination. Despite excellent performances all around, with extra applause for Karin Franklin-King in a rare return to dramatic roles, the most compelling story was the least known: The guard (played by Darian Sundberg) who failed at Ford’s Theater suffered a wrenching guilt that led to his and his wife’s (Maya Dwyer) destruction. In a lifetime of preparation, beloved actor, teacher and director Gerard Moses was ready to take on King Lear (February) for the Syracuse Shakespeare Festival. Early in the action, Moses gave us one of the most benign, even ingratiating monarchs — all the more emphasis to contrast with the terrified and terrifying rages that must follow. Veteran actor and SUNY Oswego faculty member Mark Cole delivered a Fool with more laughs from those well-worn lines than we have ever heard in these parts or anywhere else. Central New York Playhouse has been most generous in opening the door to first-time directors, many of them longtime performers. The most ambitious

of these was Justin Polly with the epic documentary of small-town homophobia, The Laramie Project. Just keeping the 23 performers blocked and ready on the small stage was an achievement. Some of his casting relied on can’t-miss strong performers, including Jim Uva, Kimberly Panek and Binaifer Dabu, but his major discovery was David Spiro as the toughtalking limo driver. When the original lead for Appleseed’s The Prisoner of Second Avenue (February) became seriously ill, director Tina Lee turned to her husband, respected supporting playing Robb Sharpe (Exonerated), to fill in. Although Neil Simon characters are not usually thought to have much depth, Sharpe portrayed a wide range of emotion, frustration, anger, absurdity, tenderness and pathos. Quite justly, his first lead won him a SALT Award. Maybe there’s something to wives directing husbands on stage. The sole entry this year from Salt City Center for the Performing Arts was a tribute and a labor of love. Company stalwart Bob Brown took on the role of Tevye for the first time and repeated the world-weary trudge of company founder Joe Lotito. Brown had first observed Lotito in the role 42 years earlier but still put his own distinctive mark on the monologues and solos. Under the direction of Brown’s spouse, Cathleen O’Brien Brown, with music direction from Abel Searor, Fiddler became a true, inexhaustible evergreen. Credit support from Carol Ditch Bennett as Golde and Anthony Wright as the Fiddler himself. For artistic and sentimental reasons, this Fiddler was one of the sweetest revivals of the year.

Summertime Productions

Longtime veteran actor David Studwell, who has also appeared at Syracuse Stage, was the busiest performer in summer theater. In June, under Meg Waldman’s direction he became more vulnerable as a surprisingly introspective Mark Rothko in John Logan’s Red at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre. A few weeks later he was back as the ethically challenged owner of the Little Shop of Horrors (July), also directed by Waldman. His ironic but boisterous, klezmer-themed “Mushnik and Son” stopped the show. Then, scooting up the road, he appeared as the patsy financier Pitkin W. Bridgework in the smash production of Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town (August), directed by Brett Smock CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

RELIVING 2014’S LOCAL MUSIC MOMENTS

Celebrations

Soundcheck, the hour-long local music show headed by Dave Frisina, celebrated 35 years on the air on Dec. 2. The program, airing Sunday nights on WXTL-FM 105.9 (The Rebel), commemorated the milestone in style by pairing with the third annual edition of the Salt City Waltz concert, which will be the last of its kind until 2017.

Rising Stars

Pond Hoppers

Local talents Julia Goodwin and Nick Ziobro performed during last July’s Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest. The two teens have won the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook competition, plus Goodwin landed on the NBC series America’s Got Talent.

Big Gets

Jazz Fest also hosted some of the biggest names in music: Trombone Shorty, the “it boy” of modern music, and blues legend B.B. King. Their performances marked one of the most impressive (and free!) Syracuse shows for the year.

Moptop Mania

Local hip-hop trio Sophistafunk crossed the Atlantic in August to tour England for a second time. The group first toured abroad in 2013 with international Syracuse powerhouse Joe Driscoll. But this time the boys made the jump on their own and wowed overseas audiences. “It doesn’t feel different,” said drummer Emmanuel Washington. “On stage playing, it doesn’t feel like, ‘Oh, we’re in England.’ We could be anywhere in the world. People are dancing, grooving. It’s so natural. You’d think it would be somewhat different, but people are just grooving.”

Big Opening

Adam Gold, keys player from Sophistafunk and owner of Funk ’n Waffles on the Syracuse University Hill, opened a downtown location on Dec. 8 as a full house of Grateful Dead lovers started a weekly tradition of Monday “Dead Nights.” The 307 S. Clinton St. venue has a full schedule of music happenings in the heart of Armory Square. Visit funknwaffles.com for details.

Local Hops

New local discs released in 2014 included ones by: The Flashing Astonishers, Donna Dennihy, Tim Herron, Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers, Beautiful Mess, Castle Creek, Golden Novak Band, Flatface and the Shemp-Dells, Nick & Noah, Pat Shaughnessy and more. Visit Sound Garden in Armory Square for a full local collection.

The inaugural “Respect: Central New York Salutes Women in Music” took place Nov. 13 at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre. The showcase for 18 local singers raised $8,115 for the Centers at St. Camillus. A second edition is slated for Nov. 13, 2015.

Homecomings

Phoenix 11 (Max McKee, Greg “Goose” LaPoint and Joe Grosvent) took off to conquer Nashville early in 2014. The local trio has since toured with several national acts and came home to perform with fellow Syracuse success story Ben Mauro (now based in Los Angeles) for Mauro’s CD release party at the Palace on Dec. 6. Paulie Cerra, another Syracuse-born LA resident, also came home for the holidays and gigged at Upstairs at the Dinosaur-Bar-Que on Nov. 26.

After the success of “50 Years of The Beatles” in February 2014, producer Paul Davie is bringing the production back on Feb. 6. “BeatleCuse” will feature an impressive lineup of Syracuse Area Music Award (Sammy) winners, as well as Grammy-winning producer Mark Hudson.

Losses

The long list of well-known musicians who died in 2014 included Joe Cocker, Ian McLagan, Bobby Keys, Jack Bruce, Johnny Winter, Pete Seeger and Phil Everly. On the local front, Mike Casale died on Feb. 21. “His playing came from his heart,” said Irv Lyons, guitarist and singer with The Ripcords. “He knew what to do. He knew the fretboard. He had so much experience. I loved his playing, but I loved his spirit more. I loved his zest for life. He didn’t let his disability (spina bifida) interfere with his life. He knew it, dealt with it and was happy. He loved people. He’d groove just like anyone else. There was no way you weren’t gonna like Mike. There was light all around him. He was just too good to be true. He put his heart into everything he did and music was good medicine for him. He’s gonna be missed.” SNT

Wondering why Sarah Hope’s review of 2014 television starts at No. 6? It’s because there was so much good stuff TAKE that it wouldn’t all fit in one issue. Nos. 1 through 5 were in the issue of Dec. 24. Check it out online at www.syracusenewtimes.com.

THE BEST OF TELEVISION IN 2014 It has been a great year for television. The first five Best of moments appeared in the Dec. 24 issue. Here are TV moments 6 through 10. (Spoilers abound below. Proceed with caution.)

Game of Thrones Season 4, ‘The Watchers On The Wall’

In another impressively long cut like True Detective’s, director Neil Marshall and the crew of Game of Thrones staged a 45-second, 360-degree shot of the Battle of Castle Black in the season’s penultimate episode. At the time, Marshall told Vulture that the scene was shot with a crane in seven takes, after an hour of on-set rehearsal, with more than 100 extras and two real giants (no, really — two seven- and nearly eight-foot tall guys)! It may be the defining moment of the season, rivalled only by Tyrion’s “confession.”

Stephen Colbert, the final season.

- It’s Shonda’s World, 7TGIT We’re Just Living In It

During one of the fall’s busiest premiere weeks in September, ABC called back to its successful family-friendly Friday TV block, TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday), with a not-so-family-friendly night of drama and debauchery, TGIT (Thank God It’s Thursday). Thursday nights are packed with three hours of back-to-back dramas by showrunner Shonda Rhimes: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and the brand new and deliciously dark and twisty How To Get Away With Murder. Not only is TGIT a solid night of shiny, gooey entertainment, but it also features several brilliantly realized female leads — two of them women of color.

Though known to most as a viral video sweeping the interwebs, this hilariously dark sitcom parody began as an “infomercial” on Adult Swim. The End of The Colbert Report

There is no better way to end a great year of innovative television than by saying goodbye to Stephen Colbert. The groundbreaking satirist was the first Daily Show correspondent to hop off of Jon Stewart’s cloud and into his own program, back in October 2005. He spent nine years expertly lampooning the political right — including, just six months after the Report’s debut, taking on President George W. Bush to his face as the keynote speaker at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. He was entirely deserving of the epic sendoff given to him on Dec. 18 by politicians, writers, public figures and some of television’s best creators past and present. All in all, Colbert was joined on stage by 107 people, singing along to “We’ll Meet Again.” SNT Sarah Hope is a graduate student at Syracuse University, where she focuses on television, entertainment history and classical music. F R E E W I L L A S T R O LO G Y

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Even in normal

times, you are a fount of regeneration. Your ever-growing hair and fingernails are visible signs of your nonstop renewal. A lot of other action happens without your conscious awareness. For example, your tastebuds replace themselves every two weeks. You produce 200 billion red blood cells and 10 billion white blood cells every day. Every month the epidermis of your skin is completely replaced, and every 12 months your lungs are composed of a fresh set of cells. In 2015, you will continue to revitalize yourself in all these ways, but will also undergo a comparable regeneration of your mind and soul. Here’s my prediction: This will be a year of renaissance, rejuvenation and reinvention.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “Sometimes I

can feel my bones straining under the weight of all the lives I’m not living,” says a character in Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. If you have ever felt that way, Aquarius, I predict that you will get some relief in 2015. Your bones won’t be straining as much as they have in the past because you will be living at least one of the lives you have wanted to live but haven’t been able to before. How you will handle all the new lightness that will be available?

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “Erotomania” is a

word for the erroneous fantasies people entertain when they imagine that a celebrity is in love with them. Laughable, right? Just because I have dreams of Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey texting me seductive notes doesn’t mean that she genuinely yearns for my companionship. And yet most of us, including you and me, harbor almost equally outlandish beliefs and misapprehensions about all kinds of things. They may not be as farfetched as those that arise from erotomania, but they are still out of sync with reality. The good news, Pisces, is that in 2015 you will have the best chance ever to become aware of and shed your delusions — even the long-running, deeply rooted kinds.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Most salamanders

reproduce by laying eggs, but the alpine salamander doesn’t. Females of that species give birth to live young after long pregnancies that may last three years. What does this have to do with you? Well, I expect you to experience a metaphorical pregnancy in the coming months. Even if you’re male, you will be gestating a project or creation or inspiration. And it’s important that you don’t let your the incubation period drag on and on and on, as the alpine salamanders do. I suggest you give birth no later than July.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Maybe you have

had a dream like this: You’re wandering around a house you live in, and at the end of a long hallway you come to a door you’ve never seen before. How could you have missed it in the past? It must have been there the whole time. You turn the knob, open the door, and slip inside. Amazing! The room is full of interesting things that excite your imagination. What’s more, on the opposite wall there’s another door that leads to further rooms. In fact, you realize there’s an additional section of the house you have never known about or explored. Whether or not you have had a dream like that, Taurus, I’m betting that in 2015, you will experience a symbolically similar series of events in your waking life.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) The Greek god Zeus

had seven wives. Themis, Leto, Eurynome and Hera were among them. Another was his older sister Demeter, and a sixth was his aunt Mnemosyne. Then there was the sea nymph Metis. Unfortunately, he ate Metis — literally devoured her — which effectively ended their marriage. In 2015, Gemini, I encourage you to avoid Zeus’ jumbled, complicated approach to love and intimacy. Favor quality over quantity. Deepen your focus rather than expanding your options. Most importantly, make sure your romantic adventures never lead to you feeling fragmented or divided against

yourself. This is the year you learn more than ever before about what it’s like for all the different parts of you to be united.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Here are three of my

top wishes for you in 2105: You will have a clear, precise sense of what’s yours and what’s not yours . . . of what’s possible to accomplish and what’s impossible . . . of what will be a good influence on you and what won’t be. To help ensure that these wishes come true, refer regularly to the following advice from Cancerian author Elizabeth Gilbert: “You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. That’s a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That’s the only thing you should be trying to control.”

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Author Robert Moss has

published 27 books. When he talks about the art of launching and completing big projects, I listen attentively. There’s one piece of advice he offers that would be particularly helpful for you to keep in mind throughout the first half of 2015. “If we wait until we are fully prepared in order to do something, we may never get it done,” he says. “It’s important to do things before we think we are ready.” Can you handle that, Leo? Are you willing to give up your fantasies about being perfectly qualified and perfectly trained and perfectly primed before you dive in?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The fish known as

the coelacanths were thought to have become extinct 66 million years ago. That was when they disappeared from the fossil record. But in 1938 a fisherman in South Africa caught a live coelacanth. Eventually, whole colonies were discovered in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa and near Indonesia. I foresee a comparable phenomenon happening in your life during the coming months, Virgo. An influence you believed to have disappeared from your life will resurface. Should you welcome and embrace it? Here’s what I think: Only if you’re interested in its potential role in your future, not because of a nostalgic attachment.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “Nothing brings peo-

ple closer than business,” said composer Arnold Schoenberg. You could be living proof of that hypothesis in 2015, Libra. Your drive to engage in profitable activities will be at a peak, and so will your knack for making good decisions about profitable activities. If you cash in on these potentials, your social life will flourish. Your web of connections will expand and deepen. You will generate high levels of camaraderie by collaborating with allies on productive projects.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Deathwatch beetles

have a peculiar approach to the mating game. Their seduction technique consists of smacking their heads against a hard object over and over again. This generates a tapping sound that is apparently sexy to potential partners. I discourage you from similar behaviors as you seek the kind of love you want in 2015. The first rule of romantic engagement is this: Sacrificing or diminishing yourself may seem to work in the short run, but it can’t possibly lead to lasting good. If you want to stir up the best results, treat yourself with tenderness and respect.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Dieterich

Buxtehude (1637-1707) was a German composer whose organ music is still played today. He was a major influence on a far more famous German composer, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). When Bach was a young man, he decided it was crucial for him to experience Buxtehude’s music firsthand. He took a leave of absence from his job and walked more than 250 miles to the town where Buxtehude lived. There he received the guidance and inspiration he sought. In 2015, Sagittarius, I’d love to see you summon Bach’s determination as you go in quest of the teaching you want and need.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 at Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. Although On the Town was slated months before word of Ed Sayles’ departure, its brilliance and high energy became the de facto calling card for the new Brett Smock era in Auburn. Complementary with Sayles’ tastes, Smock has won admirers in Auburn by playing up the edgy, urban and chic. For summer 2015 he is scheduling the area premiere of Saturday Night Fever. In a curtain speech a month before, Cortland Repertory Theater artistic director Kerby Thompson said, “A lot of people would like to see how we’re ever going to squeeze Les Misérables on our stage. And (two-beat pause) I’d like to see that, too.” Credit director Sam Scalamoni, who knew there were hidden pockets of space in the Pavilion at Little York Lake. Longtime costumer Wendi R. Zea was Scalamoni’s equal in magic-making. This was the finest Cortland Repertory production ever, and that’s what the new SALT Academy agreed, too. Outwardly a blue state-red state domestic comedy drama, Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities (August) at the Hangar was the most scintillating circus of ideas seen all year. By making the complacent reactionary mother Polly (Susan Cella) an embodiment of all that playwright Baitz dislikes, he inadvertently gave her some of his best lines. Under Mark Shanahan’s direction, actress Cella knew how to run with them. Merry-Go-Round’s artistic director Ed Sayles departed the scene in June by trailing clouds of glory. His Mary Poppins was quite visibly the most expensive and complex production of the company’s history. The book by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) restores much of the acerbic class-consciousness of P.L. Travers’ original books without completely dismissing

the Disney Corporation’s contributions. Elizabeth Earley’s Mary was indeed a high flyer, but Brian Collier’s choreography for the big production number “Step in Time” blew the roof off. Cortland Repertory’s All Shook Up (June) looked from a distance to be an Elvis Presley tribute, and, true, it packs in 26 musical numbers. But Joe DePietro’s book, combined with Bert Bernardi’s direction, are well above such pandering. The plot parodies Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night while simultaneously spoofing the jukebox-musical genre. Thus, the high-falutin’ gallery owner Miss Sandra (Hannah Zilber) sings the grungy “Hound Dog.” Andrew Connors also mastered the stifflegged, pelvis-gyrating dance of the thin, pre-Army Elvis in “Jailhouse Rock.” And there were final curtain calls for several theater veterans. Christine Lightcap’s much-lamented passing in October tended to obscure the loss of other valued personalities. Most people missed the obituary for Steve Nicholas in late December 2013. After doing honorable work with several companies, he achieved popular success with his romantic comedy Summer Solstice (2001), produced here twice. Nicholas then left town to get an advanced degree in playwriting. In the great days of Syracuse fashion shows, Jackie Coley was a top runway model in town. As a longtime society columnist for The Post-Standard, she vigorously promoted local theater and loved to take on small roles, like Wulla Jean in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Engineer Harry Tucker had a profound knowledge of everything theatrical. He and his widow Annabelle attended more shows than any non-journalist around. Putting his money where his heart was, Harry also donated generously to everybody, even the companies whose shows he did not especially like. SNT

QUICK TAKE

Next week, to ring in 2015, I’ll hold out at arm’s length my Bottom 10: the stinkers that made me crinkle my nose the most.

By Mark Bialczak

BEST OF THE BIG SCREEN FOR 2014 It’s the most wonderful time of the year ... to present you kind Syracuse New Times movie-lovers with my Top 10 list culled from my first full campaign of once-aweek new-film reporting.

1Chef

After a bunch of time spent at the top of the film chain making blockbusters, Jon Favreau picked a cooking theme to return to the little heartfelt spot that warmed him to America back in 1996 with Swingers. He wrote, directed and starred in this tasty movie about Carl Casper, a chef cascading out of control until a cross-country trip with his son, his best bud sous chef and a food truck named El Jefe reconnects him with the essential things in life, and his unhappy wife, wonderfully underplayed by Sofía Vergara.

2

Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as August, in The Fault in our Stars.

8The Fault in Our Stars

Begin Again

Another small film with a big heart, this one centers on the music business. Mark Ruffalo plays a producer with a great ear who bottoms out until he meets a singer-songwriter from the U.K. whose head is spinning because her duo partner, played by Adam Levine, turned out to be a whole lot less than she imagined. Keira Knightley is quite wonderful as the musician who helps Ruffalo reconnect to his magic, wife and daughter.

Chadwick Boseman as James Brown in Get on Up.

3Get on Up

The life story of complicated American legend James Brown is safe in the hands and feet and soul of Chadwick Boseman. Boseman handles the long and winding story with care, from the younger years to the middle ground to the fading light.

4

Gone Girl

Adapted from the novel by Gillian Flynn, this drama is full of twists and ugly behavior on both sides of the she-said, he-said spectrum featured fabulous performances by leads Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck. The plot was a winner, and they took it deep.

5

American Hustle

A true ensemble piece that wrings every ounce of energy from the cast of Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner. It’s a flim-flam caper built on the premise of the Iran-Contra scam of the late 1970s, and there’s glamor and deceit galore between the good guys and the bad guys.

6Beyond the Lights Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle.

A large-scale Hollywood romance features Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a hip-hop singer who’s lost all control of her life under the thumb of her mother/agent, played by Minnie Driver, until she meets a Los Angeles policeman played by Nate Parker. Writer and director Gina Prince-Blythewood has chosen well with these leads — I’m looking for Mbatha-Raw to become a big star.

7Her

Spike Jonze fast-forwarded a bit to the days in Los Angeles when folks could secure operating systems that could control their lives a wee bit more than those we have now. The mild-mannered fellow played by Joaquin Phoenix takes home an IOS with the voice of Scarlett Johansson. As Her learns more about Him, they fall for each other. I mean, he’s a goner, right? The relationships in said future tend to get a tad complicated and intriguing.

Young adult fiction definitely can be turned into dramatic movies for everybody, without action that gallops across the screen. Adapted from the popular YA novel by John Green, this one follows the love story of teens played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. It’s a tear-jerker, yes, with layers of true loveliness.

9Blended

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler pair in this romantic comedy that is, in the tested and wonderful-to-me ways of their match-ups in The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, maybe more comedy than romance. This time around, they’ve got kids of various ages in tow.

10

The Hundred Foot Journey

An Indian family relocates to France to rebuild a broken-down joint across the street from a stately restaurant owned by Helen Mirren. Her match of wits across the way is the patriarch played fabulously by Om Puri. SNT Mark Bialczak is a writer in Syracuse.
