Welcome to

LIGHTS ON THE LAKE

Dear Friends:

We are pleased to present Onondaga County’s 29th annual Lights on the Lake holiday show. Each year it has grown and we are always working to offer something new. We’re excited to showcase the new North Pole Station section at Lights on the Lake this year! This section will take the place of the Victorian Village section which has been in Lights on the Lake since the 2000-2001 season. Again this year all of our displays are powered by energy efficient LED lighting. Our continued partnership with Galaxy Media has enabled us to grow the show each year. And we are also appreciative of our major sponsors: •

Wegmans;

Syracuse Area Honda Dealers; and

Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital

We’re open every night, including New Year’s Eve, so be sure a visit to Lights on the Lake is on your list this holiday season. Sincerely, J. Ryan McMahon II Onondaga County Executive

ELF STARTERS Lights on the Lake crew members offer some behind-the-scenes peeks BY KIRA MADDOX

N

ow in its 29th season, Liverpool’s Lights on the Lake is a well-known showcase of wintertime joy. Backed by the dark, lapping shoreline of Onondaga Lake, families drive (or walk, depending on the day) through the makeshift wonderland adventure. Christmas tunes play over the car radio during the show as wideeyed children sit in the backseat, their faces pressed against the windows, not wanting to miss a single moment. There are twinkling overhead arches of icicle light tunnels, acrobatic gingerbread men doing tumbles through the air and fantastical castles representing Santa’s workshop — including a few reindeer and elves peeking through the windows.

where he left off with his coworkers. There’s no awkwardness, and they all feel like a second family. A dozen years ago, it took more than 30 people to staff the fivehour show every night, said Leiko Benson, director of recreation and public programs for Onondaga County Parks. That was predominantly due to the weather. Syracuse’s harsh winters, mixed with the wind coming off the lake only a few hundred feet away, made for difficult working conditions. Leaving anyone out in the cold for more than 20 minutes at a time could be a safety hazard in the making.

While families come back to enjoy the new and old displays, the lesser-told story involves the people behind the scenes who make it all happen, which tends to be the same batch of workers year after year.

“We were out there in these wooden ticket booths that we normally used during Antique Fest and the Scottish Games, and they had no heat,” Benson said. “We’d be huddled under a warming light bulb — like you would see in a chicken coop — that only warmed your hands.”

“We’ve known each other for years, and we stay in touch over the summer,” said Tim Ezzo, a ticket supervisor for Lights on the Lake. Ezzo, of East Syracuse, has been working the seasonal show since 1990. Every time he comes back, he said he’s able to pick up right

The parks department has since switched to heated ticket booths, making the process much more bearable for staff. But Ezzo admitted the camaraderie of facing the elements together is part of what makes working at Lights on the Lake so fun.

10 SYRACUSE NEW TIMES | LIGHTS ON THE LAKE 2018

“We’d see each other at our worst,” he said. “Everyone’s nose is running, their eyes are wet, they’re being pelted by rain. But you just have to laugh at it all.” Some of his favorite memories of his nearly two decades of service were the times when things didn’t go quite according to plan. “We had shelters for the costume greeters — it was sort of a tent — and when the wind would blow, it’d go flying across the parking lot,” he recalled. Ezzo was working full time at Agway in DeWitt when he stumbled onto a newspaper advertisement for job openings with Lights on the Lake. He said he never expected to keep the position for as long as he has, thinking it would be a fun, one-time way to make some extra money around the holidays. It was the bond he formed with fellow coworkers that has kept him coming back. Patti Toll, another longtime Lights employee, shared similar feelings. After seeing an ad for seasonal work with Lights in 1992, Toll quickly honed a love for her local green spaces.

You get to meet so many people, and we do all sorts of events. So you get to be a part of the community and you just experience everything. “I was always at the park, so when I saw the ad in the newspaper I just thought, ‘Oh, maybe I can work for them,’” she said. She began as a ticket seller, then moved up to ticket supervisor. After her first Lights show, she realized she could pick up more seasonal work with county parks during the summertime. She worked events at Long Branch Park, then drove the park tram. In 2002, Toll became a park ranger. While she no longer works in the Lights on the Lake ticket booth, she still regularly gets assigned to work the event. “It’s the best job in the world,” she said of being a ranger. “You get to meet so many people, and we do all sorts of events. So you get to be a part of the community and you just experience everything.” Ezzo pulled his family into the mix, with his two sons working Lights on the Lake when they were younger. Toll’s youngest daughter, who is 16, has worked at the show as one of the costume characters, most often as a giant mouse or penguin. Toll’s older 20-year-old daughter attends the show with the family, but displays her seemingly inherited love of the outdoors and history by helping her mom restore a staircase from the Jesuit missionaries-era that was long lost within the underbrush at Onondaga Lake Park. The show has slimmed down its staff to between 15 and 18 people since the days of the chicken coop light, Benson said. Most of them are returners. Traffic directors and some full-time county representatives are the first on the scene to turn on the lights in the evenings and wave through the first few early-bird cars. Also dotting the roster are ticket sellers, ticket supervisors like Ezzo, an accounts receivable clerk and a slew of costumed characters. Changes to the show’s organization go beyond staffing. Because Lights on the Lake has expanded over the years, parks employees have to set up earlier than they once did.

continued from page 11 Seasonal employees didn’t have to think about the show until mid-October, but now, Benson said, they’re getting the lights from storage by the beginning of September and begin set up in Onondaga Lake Park by Sept. 15, two months before opening day. The lights are taken down by mid-February or the beginning of March if the weather isn’t cooperating and deep snow and ice have buried the cords. Completing her 17th Lights season at county parks, Benson said she’s grown to think of the show as her baby. She said she’s always loved the holiday season, and enjoys coming up with new displays, seeing the changes in technology and watching the show open

every night from her office window. When she’s on site, seeing the faces of children and adults alike light up when they see “Gingy” the gingerbread man (another longtime employee who has had the role for about a decade, according to Benson) or another dressed-up staffer makes it all worthwhile. She feels like she’s a part of a bigger area tradition. “It’s just one of those programs that, when you hear people talk about it and see people going to it, you see generations,” she said. “People who brought their kids to it are now bringing their grandkids. It just makes you feel good, and I think we need a lot more of that.”

GIMME SHELTER Humane CNY will benefit from this year’s Lights on the Lake Dog Walk BY KIRA MADDOX

L

iverpool’s sparkling, two-mile Lights on the Lake display has been an iconic destination for holiday merriment since it began in 1990. And with the introduction of the Lights on the Lake Dog Walk during the 2009-2010 season, event planners were able to spread the cheer to every member of local families — furry, four-legged children included.

staff members, the shelter relies on donations and generous volunteer-hours to operate, especially this year.

But more dogs and pets benefit from this event than Lights fans may realize. Long after the more than 300 lit-up displays come down and Santa has packed up his workshop, the Humane Association of Central New York, or HumaneCNY, puts donation dollars to use helping hundreds of animals each year find “fur-ever” homes.

“It’s been a lengthy process, because we want to make sure we’re making the best choices for our organization and with the donated money,” she said.

“As a local organization, we feel it’s really important to give back to the communities that we work and live in,” said Carrie Wojtaszek, a spokesperson for Galaxy Media and Galaxy Events. Galaxy, based out of Syracuse and Utica, also organizes the annual Taste of Syracuse, the LEON Festival, the Jamesville Balloonfest and other local favorites. HumaneCNY, 4915 W. Taft Road, Liverpool, is a no-kill, not-forprofit animal shelter. The rescue, which has been a Central New York staple since 1966, adopts-out animals of all kinds, from dogs to rabbits to cats, said executive director Christine McNeely. And if they can’t care for the creature, they’ll use their resources to find someone who can. HumaneCNY has received Dog Walk donation dollars since 2011, with more than $25,000 collected in that time. With only six paid 16 SYRACUSE NEW TIMES | LIGHTS ON THE LAKE 2018

HumaneCNY will be starting a massive renovation project at its Liverpool location. The plan has been in the works for three years, and McNeely estimates it will cost close to $2 million. They’re about $200,000 away from breaking ground.

One of the major sources of the high cost is the land itself. Drainage problems have caused the building to begin sinking, a problem that will continue if left unaddressed. McNeely said they plan to tear down most the shelter and rebuild from the ground up, which means funneling money to engineers, architects and the town for different zoning permits. Another major issue with the current facility is inadequate accessibility. HumaneCNY allows anyone to volunteer at the shelter, but certain space constraints — such as their narrow laundry rooms and entranceway — create limitations for people who may use a wheelchair. This also limits who can come into which parts of the shelter when looking to adopt animals. “We’re really hoping it can be a center that increases the living standards for the animals, but we’re also really looking to help people as well,” McNeely said. HumaneCNY plans to redesign their dog kennels to reduce noise

Many visitors who come to the shelter already have pets at home, so creating open spaces where animals can have more time to interact with each other helps them become more sociable. This increases the likelihood they’ll get adopted, McNeely said. With the additional space, they also hope to expand their temporary-stay program. HumaneCNY will temporarily take in animals for people during a time of crisis, such as hospitalization or people who find themselves without housing. “There are actually quite a few people in our area who are living outside because of their pets,” McNeely said. “They have a dog that they can’t bring into a shelter, or they can’t find an apartment that will take an animal. Getting those people out of the streets is sort of how this program started.” If they hit their goal and start construction soon, they hope to debut the new shelter by September 2019. Organizers say the larger location will allow them to adopt-out twice as many animals per year as before, between 1,000 and 1,200 animals. While their old home is getting a tune-up, HumaneCNY has moved to 6801 Kinne St. in East Syracuse. The space once belonged to a doggie daycare, so many of the facilities were already set up to accommodate animals, McNeely said. continued on page 18

continued from page 17 The location’s major drawback is the size, which is much smaller than their space on Taft Road. So they currently are not able to take in as many dogs, and none weighing more than 20 pounds, McNeely said. However, even with their diminished temporary housing, they are still able to help more animals than they thought. They originally estimated they’d be able to adopt-out around 200 animals but are already past the 300-adoptions mark, McNeely said. “It’s good to see that the community has welcomed us back with open arms,” she said. McNeely came on board as shelter director in 2013. Bethann Kistner, board president at the time, commended McNeely for her strong management and community outreach skills. Getting out into the community is one of the reasons they’ve seen a nearly 400 percent increase in adoptions per year compared to five years ago, McNeely said. Although they’re one of the oldest no-kill shelters in New York, many locals thought they were new to the area. Through annual bake sales, clambakes and donation drives held at area businesses, HumaneCNY was able to increase its overall visibility in the neighborhood, spreading its name and message. Participating in Lights on the Lake also helps strengthen that local bond. Last year, Lights on the Lake was able to collect $5,000 each for HumaneCNY and the Second Chance Canine Adoption Shelter, on top of another $6,000 for Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection.

Part of this was attributed to a new setup in how donations were collected, Wojtaszek said. The event used large red barrels to denote donation areas; more staff was also on hand to promote giving. Red donation barrels will again be at the main entry points to the park for the 2018 Lights stroll and dog walk. “It’s great for them to not only collect the donations, but from an exposure standpoint it’s great to let them come and show off who they are and what they do,” Wojtaszek said.
