1. BALTIMORE WOODS | BEAVER LAKE 4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus 8477 E. Mud Lake Road 673-1350 | 638-2519 The nature centers offer trails for hiking, running and biking. They’ll also have activities and learning opportunities to accommodate people of all ages.

2. BOLDT CASTLE Heart Island, Alexandria Bay, 482-9724 No one really knows if there are exactly a thousand islands, because they’re distracted by the island castle and the surrounding beauty around it. Go up for a visit, and try not to lose count.

3. CLARK RESERVATION 6105 E. Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville, 492-1590 The state park is a quick drive, and the trails offer a full day’s worth of activity. Like many parks, there are a few pavilions to rent, so group outings are definitely encouraged and accommodated.

4. CHIMNEY BLUFFS 7700 Garner Road, Wolcott, 947-5205 The Lake Ontario park and natural shoreline spectacle is enjoyed as is, while winding around trails or during a great day trip to the beach.

5. COOPERSTOWN Take I-90 East or Route 20. Choose your own adventure. The Leatherstocking Country destination has a lot to offer. Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as a number of scenic stops, hiking opportunities, and nearby craft breweries to enjoy.

6. HOWE CAVERNS

GET OUT OF TOWN Schoolwork got you down? Looking for an escape not involving a coffee shop? Here are some places within a two-hour drive when you need help clearing your mind.

255 Discovery Drive, Howes, (518) 296-8900 The underground cavern offers a lot of aesthetic appeal and a valuable science lesson. It’s also a great way to cure a fear of caves, mazes, water and claustrophobia.

7. ITHACA Go south and a little west, or go a little west and then south. If you’re not from around Central New York, but you’ve seen the shirts, it’s true that there are plenty of photogenic gorges and trails; some of which are less obvious than others, so ask around.

8. LETCHWORTH STATE PARK Take I-90W, get off at Exit 46 and follow I-390 south. Described as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” this is one of the most beautiful parks in the entire world. There are plenty of outdoor and recreational activities to experience. This naturally magical place can be found a couple hours west.

9. OLD FORGE, INLET, EAGLE BAY, BLUE MOUNTAIN Go I-90 east, then go north on Route 28. The Adirondack Mountains welcomes all visitors traveling up Route 28. For those not looking for a three- or four-hour trip into the heart of the region, the small stops offer cozy eateries, shops and more on top of hiking, walking, canoeing and kayaking.

10. ROCHESTER Go I-90 West, get off Exit 45 Let’s face it: It’s a bigger city and there are several different offerings we don’t have. While we do think upstate New York is pretty spectacular, it’s important to explore and enjoy. S Y R A C U S E N E W T I M E S | STUDENT SURVIVAL GUIDE 2016

elcome to Central New York, or welcome back to your home away from home. Until May 2017, students will again be putting themselves to the test —sometimes taking them — with adjusting to college life, meeting new people, and balancing social and academic life. This can be a time of rebirth, or at least an opportunity to define your personality. What better way to express yourself than body art? Get a tattoo. This is healthier than binge drinking or experimenting with drugs. The leap into body art is safer than leaping off a frat house porch while thinking you have superpowers. Be artistic. A tattoo won’t hurt your liver but will mark this milestone in your life. “The way (tattoos) are designed,” said artist Jeremiah Clifford, “they’ll look good 50 years down the road.” His work can be experienced at Working Class Tattoo, 2641 James St. (876-2101). He’s been in the business since 2005, and part of his wanting to decorate people’s skin has stemmed from his family. His father and grandfather proudly bear them, and the style they come from is referred to as traditional. The traditional or familiar “old-school” tattoos feature several common images: daggers, faces, women and roses among others. Despite appearing simple or less detailed, the imagery and precision are bold, thus making traditional a popular style.

S Y R A C U S E N E W T I M E S | STUDENT SURVIVAL GUIDE 2016

Clifford said more people have tattoos than you would think, including people with very public occupations, but they appropriately hide their ink. “It seems more people have been getting tattooed in the last 10 years,” said Ben Krzykowski of Resurrected Tattoo, 125 W. Fayette St. (882-5400), who has been playing with ink since 2007. He added television could be the catalyst: “I can’t speak for everyone. When people see something subculture, it’s interesting to them.” Much of the TV programming has enticed people to get their own. Krzykowski mentioned some people are spontaneous about it. Clifford said he’s done an entire back piece for a client’s first piece, and in some instances he’s done one dot. “They just want to know what it feels like,” he said, shrugging. Tattoos are not for everyone. Both artists have had situations where people have changed their minds. Yet while a Sharpie marker design can be washed off skin, getting inked lasts forever. As if the decision-making process wasn’t tough enough, parlors are

FOR OTHER PLACES TO GET YOUR TATTOOS SET IN SKIN, REDONE OR COVERED UP: Angry Banana Tattoo Co. 602 S. Main St., North Syracuse. 458-4749. While walking their needle across your skin, they promise they won’t slip. Biographix Tattoo Studio. 3056 Burnet Ave., No. 6. 432-9382. What do tattoos say about you? If you have more to say, well, add more. Defiance Tattoo & Body Piercing. 826 Butternut St. 472-7546. If uncertain about augmenting your body, hit pause and think it over. If you act defiant in the moment, your beautiful design or piercing may not look as such. Halo Tattoo. 171 Marshall St. 472-0854; 7629 Oswego Road, Liverpool. 622-0400. If you’re going to behave like an angel, sit still and do your best not to move, your art will be glowing. Hard Luck Tattoo. 1105 N. Salina St. 4101234. visually intimidating spaces for a newcomer. The walls are filled with examples and drawings, ranging from the traditional designs to black-and-white, realism to Japanese art and others. Yet the two tattooists take pride in making sure their atmospheres are relaxed and the artists are cordial. Enjoying the business itself is part of the experience. “There are several great shops around town,” said Clifford. “If we don’t vibe with the customer, we’re not the shop they’re looking for.” Communication is also key, regardless of whether the client is taking the initial leap or is already a “collector.” A tattoo artist’s final designs have to live up to expectations. Any work is possible, but if an example can’t be found stuck to the wall, books are available to flip through. If a potential client can’t draw a design or know an artist who is better suited, referrals may occur. The Working Class and Resurrected artists, similar to those at several other shops, will not design a negative or racist tattoo. They’re also reluctant to put face, neck or hand tattoos on a person unless the customer is confident of the process or he or she is already covered. Though tattoos have become common, Krzykowski said the placement of them can affect a person when getting hired for a job. Where there are infinite opportunities to make bad decisions, be proactive to not let your tattoos be one of them. SNT

If this were mythology, you wouldn’t escape the island after coming across these duplicitous creatures. However, these sirens will showcase their talents, and you’ll safely leave with a bright outlook on life. Tymeless Tattoo. 36 Oswego St., Baldwinsville. 635-5481. CURES FOR THE MUNCHIES

Whether the hunger hankerings are natural or THC-induced, there isn’t a shortage of delicious, yet presumably unhealthy food options. Each will have you wanting more; however, over-consumption is frowned upon. 1. BLARNEY STONE BURGER & WINGS

6. PICASSO PASTRIES (CLOSE YOUR EYES, POINT, BUY, EAT)

314 Avery Ave., 487-9675 Sometimes you want full-flavor simplicity in the college student price range. The Tipperary Hill neighborhood burger joint has been going strong for decades, and the tavern food is still highly recommended.

466 Westcott St., 474-1700 The pastry shop isn’t open as late as some of the places on this list, so think well in advance. It’s sometimes best to go in without a plan of attack.

2. DRINK MORE WATER — YOU’RE PROBABLY DEHYDRATED. It’s true. You may think you’re craving something, but are not actually hungry. Stay hydrated, drink some water and wait a few minutes to see if the snack panic attack passes.

3. HEID’S HOT DOGS AND CONEYS 305 Oswego St., Liverpool, 451-0786 The best place to enjoy a hot dog, a coney, fries and a cold chocolate milk without having any regrets. It’s that simple. However, feel free to get the famous mixed double: a hot dog and a coney in one roll.

4. KITTY HOYNES’ REUBEN FRITTERS 301 W. Fayette St., 424-1974 The often whimsically referred “Irish cannonballs” have been a big deal before their Food Network debut. If these bite-sized Reubens were chocolates, they’d melt in your mouth. See and taste what food compactor Guy Fieri went ga-ga over.

5. PASTABILITIES’ BREAD & HOT OIL 311 S. Franklin St., 474-1153 It’s not recommended to enjoy one without the other. The best part: Both are available in-house and can be brought back to a dorm room or apartment to enjoy.

7. REGIONAL DOUGHNUT AUTHORITY (MMMMMM, DOUGHNUTS) 207 Oswego St., Liverpool, 451-3000 Broth bowls and noodles are suddenly a thing in Central New York — and so are specialty doughnuts.

8. RUDY’S LAKESIDE DRIVE-IN (ANYTHING ONCE FOUND IN WATER) 78 Route 89, Oswego, 343-2671 If you have a craving for fish and seafood, they have it. If you’d like anything fried, they can do it. Just be careful of the seagulls.

9. STRONG HEARTS CAFÉ SHAKES 719 E. Genesee St., 478-0000 720 University Ave., 478-5500 Anything from Strong Hearts is great, and there is something for everyone — yes, omnivores and even carnivores. The milkshakes are irresistible and may be the healthiest item on this list next to water. There is a plethora of flavors, and — similar to everything else on the menu — they don’t taste vegan.

10. TULLY’S TENDERS 3355 W. Genesee St., 488-9322 2943 Erie Blvd. E., 449-9339 311 Seventh N. St., Liverpool, 451-6766 There are three flavors to choose from — original, Buffalo or Asian (sweet and spicy) — but there is only one greatest tender on earth.

Sure, you can go to Marshalls, Target or even Wal-Mart to get your seasonal goods. However, to understand wine, you go to a wine connoisseur. To learn how to fix a toilet, you may ask a plumber for professional help. For your outdoor activities, it’s best to visit those specialists. 1. DICK’S SPORTING GOODS
