App Nauseam In May, the Norwegian Consumer Council staged a live, 32-hour TV broadcast marathon: a word-for-word reading of the “terms of service” for internet applications Instagram, Spotify and more than two dozen others, totaling 900 pages and 250,000 words of legal restrictions and conditions that millions of users “voluntarily” agree to when they sign up (usually via a mouse click or finger swipe). A council official called such terms “bordering on the absurd,” as consumers could not possibly understand everything they were legally binding themselves to. The reading was another example of Norway’s fascination with “slow TV” marathons, such as coverage of a world-record attempt at knitting yarn and five 24-hour days on a salmon-fishing boat.

Government Crime Scenes

The Massachusetts attorney general disclosed in May that state crime-lab chemist Sonja Farak, who was fired in 2013, worked “high” on drugs “every day” in the lab in Amherst, beginning around 2005. Among her preferred refreshments: meth, ketamine, ecstasy and LSD. Farak worked at a different Massachusetts crime lab than Annie Dookhan, imprisoned in 2013 for improvising damaging lab results on at least 20,000 convicts. The U.S. Justice Department revealed in April that in the 20-year period ending about 2000, most FBI forensic unit examiners overstated hair sample “matches” in criminal trial testimony — helping prosecutors 95 percent of the time.

Government in Action!

The Defense Department still uses 1980s-era 8-inch floppy disks on computer systems that handle part of America’s “nuclear umbrella,” including ballistic missiles. Also, according to a May report by the Government Accountability Office, systems using 1970s-era COBOL programming language are still used for key functions of the Justice Department and Internal Revenue Service, among others (including Veterans Affairs, for tracking beneficiary claims). Agencies have reported recruiting retired employees to return to fix glitches in operating systems long since abandoned by Microsoft and others. In April, police in Boise, Idaho, told KAWO Radio that they will not relax the year-old ban on dachshund “racing” that was a traditional family entertainment highlight at the annual “Arena-Wiena Extravaganza” — because all dog-racing in Idaho is illegal. The station had argued that the law intended to target only greyhound racing; that an exception had been carved out for popular dogsled racing (reasoning: individual dogs were not racing each other); and that, in any event, the “race” course was only about 40 feet long — but reported that the authorities were “dead serious” about the ban.

and the jury, had accepted that “hypnosis” could lead to “recovered” memory, a popular hypothesis in the 1980s and 1990s, but largely discredited today. There was no physical evidence against Flores, and the trial court was ordered to rethink the validity of hypnosis.

Can’t Possibly Be True

A watchdog agency monitoring charities revealed in May its choice for “worst” among those “helping” U.S. veterans: The National Vietnam Veterans Foundation raised more than $29 million from 2010 to 2014 — but wound up donating about 2 cents of every dollar toward actual help. The other 98 cents went to administration and fundraising. Similarly troubling, according to the watchdog, is that the CEO of NVVF is a staff attorney at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

More Adventures of the Easily Offended

A March video featured a black San Francisco State University woman angrily confronting a white student, accusing him of “cultural appropriation” because he was wearing his hair in dreadlocks. A March fitness club ad pitch in Sawley, England, picturing an extraterrestrial with the caption, “And when they arrive, they’ll take the fat ones first,” was denounced by an anti-bullying organization as “offensive.” A May bus-stop ad for a San Francisco money lender (“10 percent down.

Because you’re too smart to rent”) was derided for “ooz(ing) self-congratulatory privilege.”

Unclear on the Concept

Gainesville, Fla., performance artist Tom Miller planned a public piece in a downtown plaza during May and June as an homage to music composer John Cage’s celebrated “4’33” (which is four minutes and 33 seconds of purposeful silence by all musicians who “play” on the piece). Miller said his project would consist of local artists “installing” sculpture at 15-minute intervals for five days — except that the “sculpture” would have to be imagined by observers, as in the tradition of Cage, nothing otherwise perceptible would be there.

Tex-ass Justice

Convicted murderer Charles Flores was on Texas’ death row for more than 16 years, until June 2 of this year, before the state’s highest criminal appeals court finally ruled that the execution might not be justified if the most important evidence was provided by a witness whom the police had hypnotized. The trial judge,

Wait, What?

Robert Williams, 38, was arrested on June 1 in Calhan, Colorado, after challenging his daughter to a duel with handguns. Williams had pointed a gun at his daughter, then demanded that she grab one, too. The daughter’s age was not reported, but police said she and Williams both got off shots that missed. Erick “Pork Chop” Cox, 32, in an angry construction-site clash in DeBary, Florida, in June, used his front-end loader to dump two heaps of dirt onto his boss, Perry Byrd, 57, burying him up to his waist before co-workers intervened. Cox said Byrd had taken the first swing and that he had only accidentally engaged the loader when trying to turn it off, but Byrd claimed that Cox was laughing during the episode. Cox was arrested. When Triston Chase, 20, missed his court date in April in Harnett County, N.C., on financial fraud charges, it was revealed that his arrest in December had come when he had been found “residing” illegally as a civilian in a barracks at Fort Bragg — in a facility housing the Army’s 3rd Special Forces Group. According to a prosecutor, Chase had been posing as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist “for months.” The official investigation of Special Forces’ barracks “security”


was still under way at the time of Chase’s court date.

Why They Call It Dope Suspected drug possessor Darius Dabney finally confessed after a protracted confrontation with the judge in a Cincinnati courtroom in May. A showdown began when the judge noticed an “overwhelming” smell of marijuana accompanying Dabney as he entered the room. Upon extensive questioning, according to a transcript provided by WXIX-TV, Dabney swore that he had no drugs — although the penalty for lying would be immediate jailing, but producing the drugs voluntarily would result only in their being confiscated, without charges. One more chance, the exhausted, super-patient judge implored, just to be sure. Dabney then sheepishly pulled out a bag of marijuana. “Finally, you come clean,” said the judge. “Are you sure (now)?” Dabney then pulled out another bag. “Oh, my lord,” said the judge, who still kept his word and only found Dabney in contempt for “coming to court high.”

Recurring Themes

In the most recent instance of a landlord ordering a resident to make his home safe for burglars, Kevin Sheehan of Abingdon, England, was told by his housing association in May that he would be evicted unless he removed his aboveground backyard fish pond and relocated the 80 koi carp and goldfish. The landlord was concerned that if a trespasser jumped the property wall, he could not anticipate that he would land in the pond and might hurt himself.

Who’s a Good Boy?

Life is good now for British men who “identify” as dogs and puppies, as evidenced by the BBC documentary Secret Life of the Human Pups showing men in body outfits (one a Lycra-suited Dalmatian, “Spot”), exhibiting “sexual” expressions (stomach-rubbing, ear-tickling and nuzzling their “handlers”), eating out of bowls, gnawing on chew toys, wearing collars (so as not to be a “stray”), and jumping in the air for “treats.” However, decency demands that a Pup must only feign urinating against a lamppost. Said Spot, a.k.a. Tom, “It’s about being given license to behave in a way that feels natural, even primal.” Added “Bootbrush,” “(We) are trying to grasp the positive elements of the archetype of the dog.”

The Continuing Crisis

As Libya’s central bank struggles to stabilize a halting economy, it could surely use the estimated $184 million in gold and silver coins that Moammar Gadhafi minted but left buried in an underground vault in the coastal city of Beyda, but the treasure is inaccessible because central bank officials don’t know the lock’s combination, as The Wall Street Journal reported in May. The latest plan is to have a locksmith squeeze through a 16-by-16inch hole in the outer vault’s concrete wall and once inside to try his hand. If unsuccessful, the government’s bureaucrats likely cannot get paid, but even if successful, various anti-government factions may go to extremes to snatch the coins.

Argentina’s TV channels have many of the same taboos as U.S. broadcasting, including restrictions on women’s hands-on demonstration of how precisely to examine themselves for breast cancer. However, as AdWeek reported in March, the agency David Buenos Aires apparently solved the problem with an explicit TV public service announcement featuring a model who faced the camera, topless, and showed exactly how such an exam should go, e.g., where to press down, where to squeeze. The secret? The model was an overweight man with generous-sized “manboobs.”

Size Does Matter

For years, India has been concerned about the gas-release problem posed by its nearly 300 million cows and 200 million more gas-intensive animals, but researchers in Kerala state revealed a promising breeding answer in May: dwarf cows, about one-fourth the size, producing somewhat less milk but one-seventh the manure and one-10th the methane. Pound for pound, methane traps 25 times as much heat as carbon dioxide. (Bonus: The New York Times Style Book apparently now accepts the word “farting” in formal copy, while reporting that “belching” is the far more serious methane problem.)

Cow-A-Dunga

Various Western locales still host charity cow-patty “bingo” games, in which cows are fed and turned loose on a field of wagered-upon squares. (In fact, in 1997 Canada’s Nova Scotia Gaming Control Commission temporarily banned the game while it investigated whether it could be “fixed” by training the cow to favor certain relief spots.) The event lives on, but a charity fundraiser in Great Falls, Mont., in May was halted when the cow jumped over a fence and had to be chased down. Rather than await the now-nervous — or perhaps constipated — cow, the contest winner was selected by random draw.

AND NO PREJUDICE AT PARADE

T

he horrendous June 12 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., was personal for Matt Cress. His friend Mike performs as a drag queen and is the reigning Miss Pulse. Mike and several other friends who live in Orlando and sometimes go to Pulse are fine, but the massacre shook Cress. “I was devastated,” he said. “It could have been anywhere. It could have been anyone.” He and his husband of four years, Daniel Cress, were among hundreds of people at the June 18 CNY Pride Festival at the Inner Harbor. With them was their 18-month-old daughter, Emeri. The couple has attended the CNY Pride event in past years, but Matt Cress said the crowd was the biggest and friendliest he’d seen. “What happened in Orlando brought everyone together,” he said. “We wanted to celebrate as a family.” The couple didn’t consider skipping the festival after the Orlando massacre, but they decided to forego the bar scene afterward. “We’re going to wait ’til things settle down,” he said. “We have a baby to think about.” Families of many sizes and configurations attended the five-hour festival, which featured a bounce house and other activities for kids. Several couples noted that the presence of families — couples with young children as well as adults with their teenagers — reflects a welcome shift toward normalcy and acceptance of LGBTQ people. Many people dressed in shorts and T-shirts, and sought shade on the sunny, 80-degree day. Rainbow shirts, jewelry and face-paint were in abundance, as were fishnet stockings, stiletto heels, bustiers and sparkles. Lots of sparkles. During the event, a sole protester stood outside the festival entrance. “Do you love your sin more than your savior?” read a large sign he held. A few people talked quietly with the protester, as Syracuse police officers stood nearby. A woman wearing a rainbow-colored tutu walked up and kissed the protester on the arm.

References to the Orlando massacre were everywhere. One vendor was selling T-shirts that read “Pray for Pulse.” During the brief parade from the Destiny USA parking lot to the Inner Harbor, a group of young people from ACR Health held signs with letters that spelled Orlando. A number of people wore hats or shirts with the phrase, “Love is love,” echoing a quote from the speech writer, composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda shared after accepting the Tony Award for best score for Hamilton. Festival-goers crowded a table to sign a large banner that read, “CNY Pride communities stand with Orlando.” Messages included “Our hearts beat as one,” “Orlando, stay strong!! Love always wins!!” and “Can’t take our pride.” Charlysssa Cook, an Onondaga Community College student, called herself a Pride Fest newbie. “I have a lot of friends who are gay or bisexual,” she said. “After I heard about Orlando, I wanted to be sure I came here to support my friends. When I saw the news I cried and had a minor panic attack. I literally felt afraid of the world.” She was with her friend, Courtney Allen, a senior at Onondaga Junior/Senior High School. “I’m out and proud as a lesbian,” Allen said. “It’s not that big a deal for people in my school.” But not everyone feels so free. Allen’s girlfriend asked the Syracuse New Times not to use her name because her parents did not know about their relationship. “It’s great to be around people who support me,” the Syracuse-area girl said. “I don’t know if my parents will ever accept me, but hopefully they’ll learn to Images from the June 18 CNY Pride Festival. ARTRAGE SHOW TAKES IT ON THE CHIN

T

he current exhibit at ArtRage Gallery is comical and serious, absurd and reflective, wrapped up in its own identity and connected to a larger discussion. In Poor Taste: The Genetically Modified Foods Kitchen springs from the imagination of visual artist Christine Chin. When she decided to do a project centered on genetically modified foods (GMOs), Chin developed a fictional narrative dealing with the insertion of human genes into fruits and vegetables. Chin made plaster impressions of body parts such as lips, toes, fingernails and teeth, then attached them to actual foods. The display features vivid color photos of Chin’s creations: a red ripe tomato with lips, carrots with the tip consisting of a fingernail, limes with teeth, gazpacho served with ear sprouts on top. These and other hybrid foods appear in The Genetically Modified Foods Cookbook created by Chin, who is

also playing a role: chief chef of the Anthobotanica Corporate Cafeteria. Her cookbook has a plaid cover similar to wellknown kitchen tomes, with high-quality food images and even recipe notes. There are photos of a nail brush used to clean toenails on carrots or a toothbrush for brushing teeth on a lime. Some images are funny, while others are outright gross, like “Visionary Eggs en Cocotte,” which includes objects shaped like eyes, or “Honey Roasted Bearded Butternut,” in which preparing the dish starts by gathering hair from a beard.

Chin also produced a video in which she plays a celebrity chef. That may sound like pure parody, but the artist has made it clear that satire isn’t her end game. She’s deeply concerned about biotechnology and the specific impact of genetically modified foods. In a June 11 presentation at ArtRage, Chin noted that most American consumers already eat genetically modified foods. Indeed, the vast majority of corn and soybeans grown in the United States are GMOs. She doesn’t argue that such foods should be banned; instead, she says we need to evaluate their impact on people and ecosystems, and help consumers to be better informed. That process begins with something that doesn’t exist now: regulations mandating the use of labels telling whether a food is genetically modified. The controversy about labeling is one reason why Chin continues to show In Poor Taste 11 years after she first completed the project. She once wondered how long the display would be relevant, but now says it continues to tie into current events. Vermont passed a law mandating labels for many genetically modified foods, and it’s scheduled to take effect on July 1. In Washington, D.C., Congress has discussed legislation that would stop states from implementing such laws. Chin, meanwhile, has continued to create work that uses media to engage people about biotechnology issues. Her other projects include “The Sentient Kitchen,” which discusses artificial intelligence, and “Alternative Alternative Energy.” In Poor Taste is on display through July 16 at ArtRage Gallery, 503 Hawley Ave. It’s open Wednesdays through Fridays, 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call 218-5711. hristella Yonta was never a big fan of kale. Now she eats it regularly, adds the leafy green vegetable to smoothies and even makes kale chips on occasion. She was never a big fan of butternut squash, either. Now she preps it, cooks it and puts it in the freezer for easy meals during the winter months.

All spring, Yonta has been counting the days to the first pickup of her family’s CSA (community supported agriculture) share of the season from Main Street Farms, in Homer. “I’ve cleared out my freezer. I just said to my husband the other day that our CSA share starts next week and he said, ‘Oh, good.’ You just look forward to that first fresh pick and what you’ll do with it and the recipes that come with it. It helps you eat better.’’ Helping people eat better was one of Allan Gandelman’s goals when he founded Main Street Farms in 2011. Now in its sixth season, Main Street Farms has grown from a small aquaponics operation in Homer to a diversified organic farm and education center with three sites, about 300 CSA members and a regular presence on Saturdays at the Central New York Regional Market in Syracuse. “Know farms, know food” is Main Street Farms’ mantra. When you purchase its produce, you know how it was grown (without pesticides or herbicides), you know where it was grown and you know the people who plant, grow and harvest it. Anyone who has a CSA share or has purchased produce from Main Street Farms at the Regional Market has no doubt met and spoken with Gandelman, farm manager and educator Bob Cat and other members of the farm team. They’re there each week, talking up what’s in season, explaining how to roast whole tilapia and promoting eating locally and sustainably. “I’ve worked with them for every event. They’re my go-to farm,’’ says Mark Pawliw, founder of Syracuse Farm to Fork 101, a series of dining, cooking and education events designed to connect local farmers and consumers and encourage local eating.

Gandelman, 34, grew up in New York City and New Jersey, studied secondary education at SUNY New Paltz and taught social studies at the Cortland Alternative School before changing careers. He started growing some of his own food in college and says he knew little about farming when he started Main Street. “I didn’t know I wanted to farm until I was a teacher,’’ he says with an easy smile. “I love being outside.’’ He did know that school cafeteria food is unappetizing; kids pick at it or don’t eat it at all. So Gandelman wanted to do something to make a difference. He also wanted to put farms and farming in a place where people could see it — hence the name Main Street Farms. “The idea was, if we could have a farm on every Main Street, that would be a way to get people to eat better.’’ He contacted his college friend Bob Cat, who was working as a nature educator, and invited him to check out the Homer site. They built a tiered aquaponics system in a greenhouse and have been working together ever since. “It’s nice to be part of something that has grown so much in five years,’’ Bob Cat says. “Every year we’ve taken significant steps to scale up. It’s also nice to work with someone you know and trust.’’ Main Street Farms has grown considerably in a relatively short time. The one-acre Homer site, at a former flower nursery on North West Street, supplies Main Street Farms with certified organic microgreens, tilapia (not certified) and a revenue stream year-round. The farm has several high tunnels, where organic lettuces, spinach, ginger and other vegetables are grown. School groups visit regularly. Gandelman and Bob Cat lead tours, giving kids the scoop on aquaponics, how plants and fish work together in the same environment, how plants use fish waste as a source of nutrients and how the plants grow without soil. “Bob Cat has educated every fourth, fifth and sixth grader in Cortland County about aquaponics and sustainable farming,’’ Gandelman says. The Homer farm is an urban farm in a village setting, while the Cortland farm is an urban farm in a low-income neighborhood neighborhood. The South Avenue site took root in 2013, on a vacant lot leased from the owners of Homer’s Coffee Mania, who roast their coffee in an adjacent building — and also donate their spent coffee grounds to nourish the soil. The Cortland farm started out as a huge

garden and now has three high tunnels (certified organic), where tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and more were growing on a recent visit. The farm is fenced, has an automatic ventilation and drip irrigation system and has been well received by the community. Christella Yonta, executive director of United Way of Cortland and the former project coordinator for the Seven Valleys Health Coalition, has worked with Main Street Farms in securing grants for the urban farm. Many of the people who live nearby lack transportation and access to healthy food. “The only options are convenience stores; the food is packaged and processed and not ideal,’’ she says. “To have the option of produce grown there and picked that morning — that’s just amazing.’’ In Cortland, Main Street Farms offers a low-income, market-style CSA share and accepts EBT (welfare benefits) cards. Participants see how food is grown, select their produce for the week and learn how to use it. The newest addition to Main Street Farms is a more permanent home on Route 215, outside Cortland. The sprawling site with greenhouses and buildings is the longtime home of Reed’s Seeds, a farm and cabbage breeding business. Gandelman and his team are growing kale, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, potatoes, lettuces, garlic, onions, beets and more on 30 acres. Ten acres are certified organic and they are in the process of evaluating the soil and transitioning the remaining 20 acres to organic certification. The expansion also gives Main Street Farms much-needed storage, washing and cooler space. Each day is full and his “to-do’’ list is long. Yet Gandelman carves out time for school and community presentations, panel discussions and connecting with employers to support and host workplace CSA programs and pickups. School gardens and farm-to-table school lunches remain a goal. “I’m a busy guy,’’ he says. “I make it work. I have an amazing crew of people who work here and help. The community supports the farm and we support the community. It’s a two-way street. That’s the benefit of being in a small town. SPURNED KITCHEN MAGICIAN OFFERS PASTA FANGOOL

F

oodies have been selling books for decades, and now they’re on stage. In I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti, Jacques Lamarre’s dramatization of Giulia Melucci’s best-selling memoir, the actress playing the author, Larisa Oleynik, prepares a five-course meal — one course to accompany stories of each of the jerks with whom she was involved.

For the season opener at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre (through Saturday, June 25), four couples — who have paid extra for the privilege — sit next to the stage and scarf down the dishes as Oleynik completes them. She also serves them two glasses of wine. The rest of the audience, which does not receive so much as a sesame seed, licks its lips and applauds. A foodie has to do more than master countless complex recipes and actually cook them, like Julia Child and her legion of acolytes. The next step up is to see the gustatory as central to one’s identity and existence. While the taste buds may be only one of our senses, they are easily linked with the sensual of the entire body. Female foodies have been pushing this formula for some time, such as the confessional memoirs of Ruth Reichl, Comfort Me with Apples (2001) and Garlic and Sapphires (2006), in which amorous adventures are intertwined with the culinary. When Melucci’s Spaghetti came out in 2009, it carried the subtitle, A Memoir of Good Food and Bad Boyfriends, and this useful one-line blurb from Mario 6.22.16 - 6.28.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Batali: “A foodie’s dream version of Sex and the City.” The book included recipes, usually with sarcastic names, for meals Melucci prepared to entertain these guys, then consoled herself when things did not work out. If this was all there was to it, we would not have enough to fill the stage for more than two hours, but Melucci was also on a social journey and her crisp urban wit, like an Italian-American Nora Ephron, pulls us in. Melucci says that she was born in Brooklyn and still lives there, but in a more fashionable neighborhood. Her birth neighborhood was Bay Ridge, the scene of the John Travolta disco classic Saturday Night Fever. In such an immigrant and working-class environment, she could be well-grounded in Italian cuisine. But the family rose to affluence, and her mother has since escaped to Connecticut. Giulia attended ultra-posh Sarah Lawrence College, where she majored in art history. Without blushing she describes herself as a “complicated person” who prefers the company of “complicated” men.

She entered the publishing industry at starvation wages before 1990 and the Internet, when publishing was still considered glamorous. Soon she was thriving at fashionable addresses, such as the now-defunct satirical monthly Spy and the more sober-sided Harper’s. Thus four of the Bad Boyfriends are writers, or aspiring writers, and one is a cartoonist for The New Yorker. Which brings us to the casting of Larisa Oleynik, a blonde with a Russian-sounding name, as Melucci. She brings extensive professional credits, including the role of Cynthia Cosgrove in the hit cable series Mad Men, but she does not look as though any of her ancestors came from the Mediterranean. The role calls for three rare skills, starting with whip-sharp comic timing. Next comes the ability to actually prepare the meal Melucci is talking about. As difficult as this may sound, certain hand gestures, like turning the crank of a pasta machine, appear to be verbal cues as well, helping to remember what looks like 90 pages of solo dialogue. And she must also do men’s voices, the way actresses reading recorded books can impersonate male characters. True, each of the five men is ultimately comic, but Oleynik, under Michael Barakiva’s direction, produces a quintet of distinct male voices. The men are nowhere near as appetizing as the dinners. As Melucci tells it, she was a virgin when she entered the publishing industry, so it’s pretty surprising that any of them made headway. And given that they are professional writers, they have horrible verbal approaches. Ethan, the second swain, bellows, “What does it take to seduce you?” The last one, Lachlan, a possibly deranged children’s writer, allows Oleynik to show off a Scottish accent. Historical note: The biggest laugh of the evening is a gratuitous slam at Donald J. Trump, who is not a character in the action. A year of free-form campaigning has brought him to this. SNT

CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL FOR SPIRITED 1776 Central New York Playhouse’s production of 1776 (running through July 2) is a labor of love, more than many other shows opening this summer. In June 2007, Dustin Czarny challenged conventional wisdom by reviving the Sherman Edwards-Peter Stone musical at Appleseed Productions. “Too big, too offbeat,” skeptics said, and no Syracuse company does any business in June. Great box office and unprecedented honors at the Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) Awards proved Czarny right. Although Czarny has never said as much, the success of 1776 must have prompted him to found his own company, which has changed names and venues and is now completing five years at Shoppingtown Mall. So it’s time to revisit the sweetness of a keynote hit.

Some may be familiar with 1776’s backstory and the difficulties of getting it up and running. One-hit wonder Sherman Edwards thought real history was both interesting and dramatic without distorting or romanticizing the record of what happened. The protected and raucous debate at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall could have come out differently, and its implications still matter. Twenty-seven men in knee breeches and wigs debated, and often they all have to be on stage at once. We also see two women, Abigail Adams (Cathleen O’Brien Brown) and Martha Jefferson (Kasey McHale), conjured up from a distance. In casting so many roles, Czarny has lured two stars and relied on some versatile company regulars, but also called in chits from people not usually linked to his outfit. Baritone Bob Brown might be

one of the most familiar faces in town, but audiences who have known him for a generation are in for a surprise, and not just because he sacrificed his beard for the role. The John Adams of history and of 1776 was an irritating gadfly who admits to being “obnoxious.” As Adams sits in front at stage right and is involved with everything, Brown must often set the scene just by the way he listens and reacts. Brown’s eyes and cheekbones have never been so emphatic. Musically he carries more weight than any other player, delivering the goods in his final number, “Is Anybody There?” — really a call to arms. It matters not that Brown looks very little like the historical John Adams, something of a shrimp, or even Paul Giamatti, who portrayed Adams memorably in an HBO miniseries, but he is shorter than his principal opponent John Dickinson (Steve Gamba) of Pennsylvania. Director Czarny’s deftest move is in making Gamba’s Dickinson such a formidable adversary, sometimes overpowering Adams. Not only is Dickinson no narrow-minded crank, he’s utterly charming in his Act II gavotte, “Cool, Cool, Considerate Men,” choreographed by Kasey McHale. Although few musical numbers have had much life beyond the show, Abel Searor’s full-bodied musical accompaniment — including six players, with reeds and strings — keeps the production flowing. Cathleen O’Brien Brown, one of the area’s top sopranos, plumbs the maximum emotion from her duets with John, “Yours, Yours, Yours” and “Com-

pliments.” As Martha Jefferson, Kasey McHale presents an expressive soprano not displayed before. Among the company regulars breaking away from type, first place goes to Greg J. Hipius, who shaves half his pate to play Benjamin Franklin. Unlike previous Bens who have favored acid retorts, Hipius prefers a more agreeable founding father who follows his sallies with a Cheshire Cat smile. Distinguished tenor Liam Fitzpatrick as Thomas Jefferson is almost unrecognizable in a red wig but skillfully draws attention to himself for the first third of the action, where he asserts an anticipatory presence. Three roles are designed to deliver show-stopping numbers. The most startling of these is Eric Feldstein’s Rutledge of South Carolina, the real skunk at this garden party. His Mephistophelean “Molasses to Rum” is an unsettling paean to the profits to be made from slavery. The number also points to why Adams and Franklin felt the acceptance of slavery was the price of declaring independence, a key dilemma in 1776 and still the major moral question in American history. The high-spirited, pun-filled “Lees of Old Virginia” is one of the show’s few purely comic numbers. It marks the welcome return of veteran player Daniel Bostick as Richard Henry Lee. Winning in quite a different way is the poignant lament “Mama Look Sharp” from the hard-pressed Military Courier, with Jesse Navagh reprising his role from nine years ago. SNT

Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown. The Devil To Pay (Ruf Records). Kim Simmonds originally started Savoy Brown in 1965 with the concept of being a British version of a Chicago blues band: a mission that is absolutely apparent in this CD release. While many groups have shifted through genres throughout the decades, Simmonds remains rooted in the blues. Although an incredible list of musicians have passed through the band, today simplicity is the key to Savoy Brown. Simmonds plays with two Central New York musicians, Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnet Grimm on drums. The result is an album that will speak to classic rock fans who appreciate the strength of the power trio. Bass and drums lay what should be a meaty foundation (the bass could use more in the mix) and Simmonds’ guitar, vocals and harmonica provide the special sauce that brings all varieties of blues rock to life.

The Devil to Pay speaks about regret, paying for past mistakes and growing out of wrongdoing. With topics ranging from drinking too much to a cheating woman, Simmonds is a professional at finding the best topics for blistering blues. The album starts with the smoldering “Ain’t Got Nobody,” a slow-burner that sets the mood for the rest of the disc. “Bad Weather Brewing” is a grooving romp while “Oh Rosa” is classic bouncing blues, “Snakin’” is a finger-bending instrumental and “Watch My Woman” offers a fast-paced shuffle with plenty of guitar flash. leave your head. “Mellow Down Easy” has a perfect title given the song does exactly the opposite: As it progresses, the female backups (Jes Sheldon and Shari Gage) ramp up and explode along with the powerful guitar. While “Mountain Town” can’t help but leave you thinking of “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, with its incredibly familiar breakdown, the rest of the song serves as a true ode to the boys’ hometown of Norwich. well. The variety of sounds and texture they provide give the band warmth on the disc. Harmonies are everywhere, with instrumentation ranging from mellow and ambient to raw and strong. The album, recorded, mixed and mastered at ATS Recording with Michael Sepello, is a welcome addition to the country rock scene. For more, visit tumbleweedhighway.com. Dave Novak. Fifteen Shades of Dave (independent). This CD’s endearing liner notes from both Novak and John Cadley make clear the point of this project. “Recording songs that, for one reason or another, mean something to me was something I had been thinking about for years. I don’t think I have ever enjoyed a project as much. I hope you enjoy the results,” Novak writes. Meanwhile, Cadley emphasizes that Novak is “having more fun than anybody. In 50-plus years of playing he’s made a lot of people smile. A lot. Even me, and I don’t smile.” Novak commands guitar and vocals with the help of musicians Sam Patterelli (bass), John Dancks (upright bass), Jimmy Johns (drums/percussion), Ron Keck (percussion), Tim Hodgson (dobro), Dave Miller (drums), Steve Schad (keys) and members of The FabCats, Nightcaps and Cross Creek. The tracks seem to capture a classic rock vibe, whether they’re classic or not. While “Fools Rush In” definitely encapsulates that feel, the highlights are songs like “Sarah E,” a Novak original with a hint of Bruce Springsteen. The final two tracks, “How Long” and “Mother Nature’s Son,” were recorded live and definitely bring bursts of energy — as well as excellent solos — to the album. For those who know Novak from his years of performance in the area, this album is a must-have. Cadley is right: It’s like listening to a smile.

he secret to a long life just might have something to do with swiveling one’s hips to “The Twist,” the forever catchy rock number that created a gyrating dance craze that swept the nation in the early 1960s. Chubby Checker’s 1960 version not only catapulted him to stardom, he also became a dance king who started other happy-feet floor-fillers such as the Fly, the Pony and the Hucklebuck.

What was it like to achieve sudden stardom with “The Twist”? You can’t imagine that you’re changing the world. It wasn’t like another singer came along and had a hit record. With “The Twist,” in two minutes and 42 seconds the dance floor was transformed. The very moment that this style of dancing was seen on television, that was what we brought here, and it’s still here. It was like when Alexander Graham Bell said, “Watson, is that you?” or someone said, “Mr. Edison, the lights are on.” The world changed, only people didn’t know it did. But it changed. When I was 4 years old my mom took me to see (country star) Ernest Tubb at the Georgetown County Fair in South Carolina. After I saw him all I talked about when I was 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 years old was wanting to be a big star, being on stage and being on the radio so people could hear my music. And all of a sudden it happened. Very few people get what they want in life, so I was very contented. I wasn’t overwhelmed, I was like someone who was running in the Olympics and had a chance to win. That was my attitude toward it all, but I didn’t think it was going to happen like that! When you were growing up, was it all about the music or was it to meet girls? It was always about girls, there’s no way around that. And to be singing and have girls making a fuss over me, it was like, “Whoa! Isn’t that cool?” And it was in the era of cool, 1959, when rock’n’roll was in its infancy, and the British Invasion wasn’t here. It was totally American cool, and the whole world still copies that. And “The Twist” was something else. (At one show) we’re looking at this girl dressed up her tight long dress that went just below her knees, she had bobby socks on, her black shoes off, a very tight sweater filled up with good stuff, a nice ponytail, lipsticked with her mouth puckered up, and she’s doing “The Twist” and syracusenewtimes.com | 6.22.16 - 6.28.16

you’re looking at her and she’s looking at you, and she’s exploiting her sexuality while being fully dressed, and I’m like, “Are you kidding me?” In fact, exercise music did not begin until Chubby Checker and “The Twist.” When I go anywhere to perform, people are standing and dancing the whole time. And we’re very current. You know that term, “Throw your hands in the air like you just don’t care,” it’s after the dance we made called “The Fly.” And the term hip-hop, well that’s what a pony does, and the only pony I know is Chubby Checker’s pony (from his 1961 No. 1 chart hit “Pony Time”). We’re just ingrained into the society of dance. What kind of diet do you maintain to stay in shape? Exercise and don’t eat, that’s what you do. If you’re gettin’ fat, you’re eatin’ too much, that’s all. Life’s very simple, you just have to follow the rules, and that’s the hard part. Did you ever think about pursuing a movie career? It’s too much work; you sit around and read all the time. I have friends who are actors and they go to parties, but they have to go in the bathroom to read scripts. I know how much work goes into being an actor; you never see the outside world because you’re always in the walls (of soundstages). That’s why those guys change wives so much, because they’re not outside in the freedom of the air. Being an entertainer is so perfect because you go and do your show, then you rehearse with the band a little bit, you write some songs, you can ride in your car like Bruce Springsteen rides across the country in his little pickup by himself. People ask me, “Chubby, when will you retire?” And I say, “I’ve been retired all my life.” I just played in California with the Beach Boys (on June 18 at the Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln) and now I’m retired for a few days, then I play at the Turning Stone, then I go to Texas (for a San Antonio concert on Saturday, June 25), then I have more days of retirement. It’s the best! (Starts singing the Irving Berlin number, “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”) Plus we’ve just finished a book on my life; the authors have been working on it for five years, and it’s about 800 pages. There is a group of people who want to make a play out of a portion of the book because of the importance of dance.

Because Chubby’s the dance man. And I have the first No. 1 song of all time. But (radio stations) aren’t playing it. I’m coming to Syracuse and I listen to the stations and I don’t hear Chubby Checker--but I do hear The Beatles‘ “Twist and Shout,” and that’s very upsetting to me. It’s been going on for 40 years. If you get your music played, like the Beach Boys, you’re going to draw big crowds. And if you don’t get your music played, the audiences get smaller and smaller. And that’s painful for me. My 2013 song “Changes” has been bouncing on and off the charts for 2 ½ years, but I can imagine we would have stayed on the charts if the song got played by the disc jockeys. It’s me being who I am and I’m not getting played. You know, Prince’s music isn’t getting played, Lionel Richie’s music isn’t getting played. It’s definitely a race thing and I’m going to bring it up, because it keeps me from filling the houses, even though I have the No. 1 song on the planet. But I’m still living my dream. I wanted to be an entertainer and that’s what I am. And I’m sitting at my nice house in Chester County, Pa., where I’ve been since 1965, and my chair is overlooking my pool and my trees and my 14 acres, so I’m doing something right. I complain a lot but I got a lot, and I’m going to keep working and fighting and hoping and praying. Concerning the Syracuse connection, what was it like working with SU graduate Dick Clark? (Laughs) He was very establishment, that’s all I can say. (Rock promoter) Alan Freed was not establishment; he went out and did his thing, he didn’t care. But Dick’s wife put Checker after (my nickname) Chubby, and Dick got the record company to give me “The Twist” to sing, and I was the right man for the job. Dick was already a big star hosting American Bandstand, but after two minutes and 42 seconds of Chubby Checker and “The Twist” he became a superstar because it happened on his show. But he was a wonderful guy and I enjoyed him. Who is the better twister: men or women? The world goes around because of women, whether they’re young or old. There’s not one ugly woman in this world, they’re all so beautiful, and so important and so necessary. Women always do things better than men, and without them, men aren’t too hot. SNT
