Getting Fannies in the Seats

The Bunyadi opened in London in June for a three-month run as the world’s newest nude-dining experience, and now has a reservation waiting list of 40,000 — since it only seats 42. Besides the nakedness, the Bunyadi creates “true liberation,” said its founder, by serving only food “from nature,” cooked over fire (no electricity). Waiters are nude, as well, except for minimal concessions to seated diners addressing standing servers. Tokyo’s Amrita nude eatery, opening in July, is a bit more playful, with best-body male waiters and an optional floor show — and no “overweight” patrons allowed. Both restaurants provide some sort of derriere-cover for sitting, and require diners to check their cellphones at the door.

News from Kim Jong Un’s North Korea

In March, a South Korean ecology organization reported that the traditional winter migration of vultures from China was, unusually, skipping over North Korea, headed directly for the South — apparently because of the paucity of animal corpses, which, according to reports, is a major food source for millions of North Koreans. In June, the Global Nutrition Report, which criticized the United States and 13 other countries for alarming obesity rates, praised North Korea for its “progress” in having fewer adults with “body mass index” over 30.

Cultural Diversity

Milwaukee’s WITI-TV, in an on-thescene May report from Loretta, Wis., in the state’s northwest backwoods, described the town’s baffling fascination with “Wood Tick Racing,” held annually, provided someone finds enough wood ticks to place in a circle so that townspeople can wager on which one hops out first. The “races” began 37 years ago, and this year “Howard” was declared the winner. According to the organizers, at the end of the day, all contestants, except Howard, were to be smashed with a mallet.

Government in Action

The Department of Veterans Affairs revealed in May that, between 2007 and last year, nearly 25,000 vets examined for traumatic brain injury at 40 VA facilities were not seen by medical personnel qualified to render the diagnosis — which may account for the result that, according to veterans’ activists, very few of them were ever referred for treatment. TBI, of course, is the “signature wound” of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Basking in its “record high” in venture-capital funding, the Chinese Jiedaibao website put its business model into prac-

aquariums — at pet stores. Turned out tetracycline wasn’t just good for tail rot and gill disease. It also did great with syphilis.”

Tall Story tice recently: facilitating offers of “jumbo” personal loans — two to five times the normal limit — to female students who submit nude photos. The student agrees that if the loan is not repaid on time, at exorbitant interest rates, the lender can release the photos online. The business has been heavily criticized, but the company’s headquarters said the privately negotiated contracts are beyond its control.

He’s Got the Beat

For the last 17 months, Stan Larkin, of Ypsilanti, Mich., has gone about his business, even playing pickup basketball, without a functional heart in his body. Instead, he carries around in a backpack the “organ” that pumps his blood. Larkin, 25, was born with a dangerous heart arrhythmia, and was kept alive for a while with a defibrillator and then by hooking him up to a washing-machine-sized heart pump, leaving him barely mobile. But then came the miraculous SynCardia Freedom Total Artificial Heart, weighing 13 pounds and improving Larkin’s quality of life as he endured the almost-interminable wait for a heart transplant, which he finally received in

May. An average of 22 people a day die awaiting organ transplants in the United States.

Near-Croak Experience

An ordinary green tree frog recently injured in a “lawn-mowing accident” in Australia’s Outback was flown about 600 miles from Mount Isa to the Cairns Frog Hospital. CFH president Deborah Pergolotti spoke despairingly to Australian Broadcasting Corp. News in June about how society underregards the poor frogs when it comes to rescue and rehab — suggesting that “there’s almost a glass ceiling” between them and the cuter animals.

Silver Lining

When they were starting out, the band Guns N Roses practiced and “lived” in a storage unit in Los Angeles, according to a book-review essay in the May 2016 Harper’s Magazine, and “became resourceful,” wrote the essayist. Wrote bass player Duff McKagan in one of the books reviewed: “You could get dirtcheap antibiotics — intended for use in

The super-painful “Ilizarov procedure” enables petite women to make themselves taller. A surgeon breaks bones in the shins or thighs, then adjusts special leg braces four times daily that pull the bones slightly apart, waiting for them to — slowly — grow back and fuse together, usually taking at least six months. (In 2002, a 5-foot-tall woman, aiming for 5-4, gushed about “a better job, a better boyfriend . . . a better husband. It’s a long-term investment.”) Now, India’s “medical tourism” industry offers cut-rate Ilizarovs, but — according to a May dispatch in The Guardian — are unregulated and, so far, not yet even taught in India’s medical schools. Delhi’s leading practitioner Dr. Amar Sarin, who claims “hundreds” of successes, admits there’s a “madness” to patients’ dissatisfactions with the way they look.

England’s Chester Crown Court in June after an April raid revealed he had established a “sophisticated” cannabis-growing operation with 160 plants in a building about 50 yards from the front door of the Cheshire Police headquarters. ship, Mich., in June, police surrounded a suspect’s home and shut down the neighborhood for the next 11 hours, fired tear gas canisters through windows, and used a robot to scope out the inside — and ultimately found that the house had been empty the whole time. The domestic violence suspect is still at large.

The sheriff of Des Moines County, Iowa, who shot his hand while cleaning his gun (Burlington, Iowa, December). A moviegoer adjusting in his seat in Salina, Kan., shot himself during the feature, three months after acquiring a no-test-required concealed-carry permit (October). Muscle Tussle In 2006, a court in Preston, England,

apparently weary of Akinwale Arobieke’s repeatedly, unconsensually “touching” men’s biceps in public, issued a Sexual Offenses Prevention Order making any such future contact automatic offenses. Arobieke admitted a longtime fascination with buffed-up physiques and continued from time to time to find biceps irresistible, but in May 2016 he convinced a Manchester Crown Court judge to lift the SOPO based on his assurance that he wanted a “fresh start” and would behave himself. The judge seemed not quite sure, but noted that police could still arrest him under other sexual or assault statutes.

Northern Exposure King Cove, Alaska, population 923, lies between two massive volcanic mountains on one of the Aleutian Islands, uncon-

nected to other civilization and 625 miles from any medical facility in Anchorage, “accessible” only by a weather-challenging “puddle-jumper” airplane to Cold Bay for a connecting flight. About two-thirds of the residents have flying anxieties so severe that King Cove has a makeshift vending machine dispensing Valium. U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski has campaigned to build a road to Cold Bay to eliminate the nerve-wracking flights, but it would disturb a federally protected wilderness, and the U.S. Interior Department has so far declined.

Chutzpah! New York City police rounded up 39

people on April 26 suspected as part of a massive credit-card-scamming operation targeted at customers of high-end retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue — and whose members are affiliated with the rap-music group Pop Out Boyz, which makes reference to the scams in its songs. (“For a Scammer” features the lyric, “You see it, you want it, you have it,” while another voice repeatedly brags, “I’m cracking cards cause I’m a scammer.”) A New York Post report describes “cracking cards” as a scheme paying a bank customer a fee to accept a phony deposit into his account to be later withdrawn — but the scammer removes much more money than the phony deposit.

Cheek to Cheek Ricardo Ruiz, 26, was arrested in March

on complaints from women that he had groped them at parks in Davie and Cooper City, Fla. The case got easier afterward when police were tipped to a YouTube video that they believe is of Ruiz, addressing the camera while driving a car and extolling his groping habit. “Man, today was a good day, touching ass,” he says. “If you don’t touch ass, you’re crazy. That’s all I got to say.” Thanks to Stan Kaplan and Gerald Sacks, and to the News of the Weird Board of Editorial Advisers.

ONE VIEW OF LAKEVIEW: Dust, Whiz and A One-Armed Drummer

top complaining about the Lakeview Amphitheater! My advice to you naysayers is to pour some sugar on it and start rockin’.

That’s what I did Monday night, June 27, after I purchased a $16.50 beer and was assured by the nice folks at the Lending Tree that I am eligible for their “credit repair” service. This was my first-ever visit to the new $50 million muddle by the puddle. Featured were what I mistook as a trio of cutting-edge bands headlined by someone called Def Leppard. Much to my embarrassment, I later realized that Def Leppard was founded in 1893, the same year one of Fayetteville’s own, President Grover Cleveland, granted amnesty to Mormon polygamy. (Well played, Grover, but what about the rest of us?) The show was, like, awesome, and I don’t just mean Def Leppard and its one-armed drummer — more on that stud later. The warm-up acts, the legendary REO Speedwagon and before that Tesla, straight out of Sacramento, another hard-rockin’ hair band, all brought the same level of boundless energy and technical fluency we’ve come to associate with the heavy-metal dredging project downwind. Yes, there are some minor issues with the venue, which, of course, was crammed down our throats

by the unholy alliance of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and County Executive Joanie Mahoney. But any new facility is bound to have a few glitches. In this case it feels like nitpicking to even mention them. OK, twist my arm. There was a small number of towering, acrid brown particulate clouds swirling through the moonscape parking lot, barely enough dust for me to contemplate that the biggest financial winner here is the Delta Sonic car wash chain, home of the Touch-Less upsell. A line from Timothy Egan’s The Worst Hard Time, his award-winning chronicle on the Dust Bowl, came to mind: “Going to the outhouse was an ordeal, a wade through shoulder-high drifts, forced to dig to make forward progress.” Except there were precious few outhouses in the parking lot, or anywhere. A few days earlier, at the Dave Matthews show, community organizer Lindsay Speer of Creating Change had circulated a photo she took of people crossing a fence to whiz in a nearby toxic landfill.

“What we observed were thousands of people going onto the Crucible site because there were not enough bathrooms.” Speer said. Speer does a lot of important work in town, but in spotlighting this emergency even she might not realize that she might have prevented a mass tragedy. During the Def Leppard show, I did a little research on my cell phone as to what can happen when you pour some urine on heavy metals. This from the New Jersey Department of Health: “Mercury can form explosive compounds with AMMONIA and will explode when mixed with . . .” The list of chemical catalysts was long, daunting and familiar. I was too shaken to read them all. You wanna talk about “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak”? Unless more toilets are brought in soon, a whole lot of people are at grave risk of losing critical appendages, and I’m not talking about arms. Speaking of which, that one-armed drummer, Rick “Thunder God” Allen, was, all by himself, worth the price of admission. His left arm was severed in a car crash on New Year’s Eve 1984. He found a way to keep playing, and the band got even more popular. In 2015, his severed arm was displayed at the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. It’s a damn shame that the whole band hasn’t been inducted. Any group who has sold as many records as DL — more than 100 million — should be there. My opinion. My larger point is that if Rick Allen can have such a positive attitude, so can all you amphithe-haters. I get it. If anyone honest had made a list of the 25 things Central New York needed most, an outdoor amphitheater miles from the nearest bars, restaurants and stores wouldn’t have even made the cut. But here’s the reality: We have a new white elephant to bookend our ballpark, so let’s enjoy it. To paraphrase another rock band from England: In Syracuse we can’t always get what we want. But if we try sometimes, well, we just might find a safe place to pee. SNT

STICKER SHOCK IN ARMORY SQUARE

The Briana sisters are standing at the corner of Franklin and Walton streets in Armory Square, waiting to meet other family members for lunch. While waiting, they survey the 255 three-inch-square post-it stickers pasted in three rows on strips of heavy cellophane on the corner windows of the empty restaurant space in the Butler Building, which 30 years ago housed the Syracuse New Times on its second floor. Each sticker has one or two blanks completing phrases telling why people come to Armory Square, what they do there, what they wish was there and what the neighborhood needs. A half-dozen cords, which once held black markers for filling in the blanks, hang empty. All but seven stickers have been filled in. Most responses focus on food or sex. The sisters have no idea who put the stickers on the windows or why, but both agree it’s a cool idea. Down the block at Pastabilities, bartender Mark Hurley reflects that the display provides a wish list for the neighborhood, but would have liked it to be more about civic pride. There seems general knowledge in the neighborhood, however, that the display is the work of local art activist Michael John Heagerty. He promoted the project as part of a Syracuse University course entitled Urban Acupuncture, the brain-

child of Marilyn Higgins, SU vice president for community engagement and economic development. The Armory Square stickers are one of the course’s three neighborhood focuses, which also include a Valley segment with former Common Councilor Bob Dougherty and one on the Near West Side (becoming known as the Salt District) with SU social work Professor Maarten Jacobs, director of the Near Westside Initiative. With the three facilitators billed as “neighborhood experts,” the course outline suggests they will provide background on the history and culture of their neighborhood, and “perhaps come to your class dinner with community members and press conference with the media and elected officials at the (Nancy Cantor) Warehouse (on 350 W. Fayette St.).” Heagerty credits Candy Chang, initiator of the Before I Die Project, with inspiration for the sticker project, which resulted

from students talking at an all-day retreat. For Heagerty, the project offers a lesson in city planning: “Taking a survey without going door to door to find out what people want.” Responses range from the emotionally moving (“I wish I could find my dad in Armory Square,” “Armory Square needs more love”) to the more practical lifestyle needs, such as more dance clubs, a grocery store and LGBT-friendly institutions. If the stickers can’t stay in the storefront window, Heagerty says, he will move them, perhaps to Hanover Square. “Actually, I don’t have plans to move them,” says John Butler, the building’s owner. “They didn’t ask, but when they first put them up I figured, ‘How bad can it be?’ Actually, it gets a lot of notice. (Butler is trying to rent the space, and asks that only serious inquires call 471-7016.) We’re all in this neighborhood together. It’s important that we all support each other.” SNT

CORTLAND REP GANGS UP FOR RUMBLE SEATS

L

ast year Cortland Repertory Theatre polled audiences to find out what shows they would like the company to produce. One of the two winners was West Side Story (running through July 9), hardly a surprise as it is often ranked America’s most-loved musical. The co-winner, A Chorus Line, will be coming along in mid-July. In its 41-year history, we can be sure that people running Cortland Repertory, including current artistic director Kerby Thompson, had thoughts of staging West Side Story but voted against it. This version delivers everything the crowd wants. First, Thompson needed the right team in charge. Nathaniel Shaw is hardly a stranger with the company but is not a regular, either. Shaw, the associate choreographer for Once on Broadway, directed Miracle on South Division Street at Cortland Repertory last August. Yet Shaw’s appointment underscores that although we think of it as Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, the notion originated with choreographer Jerome Robbins, and it is a dance show before anything else. Further supporting this emphasis is choreographer Barbara Hale Hartwig, brought up from the South, who staged the memorable Cats in 2012 at Cortland. Then there’s the issue of space. Cortland Repertory’s facility is, in fact, a Teddy Roosevelt-era pavilion next to Little York Lake in Preble. This intimate space is usually an advantage, as jokes told less than six feet in front of the audience have proven to be funnier than in a larger hall, but there is sometimes an absence of elbow room. This production delivers nine musicians led by W. Brent Sawyer for Bernstein’s matchless score. Selections from West Side Story, with complex and ravishing harmonies, are commonly performed by symphony orchestras. The power and lyricism of this

musical is the first assurance that Shaw, Hartwig and Thompson are pinning the reputation of their company on the excellence of this production. West Side Story is just short of being an opera, with widely known vocal demands. And it’s supposed to be about callow street kids. When the show is taken by opera companies, the roles of Tony and Maria are commonly given to singers twice the characters’ ages, and everybody is just as happy. Cortland Repertory’s production hews closer to Arthur Laurents’ book and to Shakespeare. Justin Luciano as Tony looks barely old enough to buy a drink, and he’s a lover, not a fighter. He’s not an alpha dog like Jacob Major’s Riff, leader of the Jets. Luciano’s two big solos, “Something’s Coming” and “Maria,” are drenched with expressive emotionalism. And his half of the love duet, “One Hand, One Heart,” makes you understand why this is still so often sung at weddings. Musically, Brittany Santos takes on a somewhat more demanding role as Maria. She’s at the top of her form as the clearest and most articulate voice in the quintet “Tonight,” dominating the four other themes brought in by the rest of the company. Then she must abruptly switch tones for the sparkling, operetta-like “I Feel Pretty.” Tall and thin, Santos also delivers a sense of Maria’s vulnerable fragility, especially when seen next to the bombast of Melissa Rapelje’s Anita. Verbal repartee, however, is not actress Santos’ forte.

As Anita, Melissa Rapelje benefits from one of the greatest soubrette/scene-stealing roles ever written. Tall and sexy, Rapelje’s formidable presence dominates the scene as soon as Anita enters, even when standing next to her lover, Bernardo (Pasqualino Beltempo), who looks more like a Florentine prince than a street tough. Her “America” number, a fandango of outrageous and insulting political incorrectness, gets your blood thumping and, indeed, brings down the house. Then, in a reversal of sexual energies, her near-rape scene at Doc’s sweet shop is truly scary. Shelley Barish’s mobile scenic design allows for Doc’s shop to pop up in an instant, just as other key scenes have to move in. Maria’s balcony is on casters, while the wire schoolyard fence where the first act’s rumble takes place is a panel. Not one of these shortcuts diminishes the impact of Bernstein’s music, Laurents’ book or Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics. West Side Story calls for 44 dancing feet, between the Jets, the Sharks and their girlfriends. Discounting high school productions, this is among the youngest male and female chorus ever seen on local floorboards, and one of the most athletic, with men who can do high-kicks to the altitudes of the women. The supposedly asexual Anybody’s (played by Lizzie Markson) takes a bigger role in the dances than in other productions. Many performers appear to be stars of college programs, such as Ezekiel Edmonds (Snowboy), featured in several Syracuse University Drama Department shows. Edmonds also doubles as the Dream Tony in “Somewhere.” Giovanni Da Silva as the thug Chino has also been featured in SU Drama productions. And on the Shark side as Pepe, we have Anthony Wright, a top performer in community theater and Redhouse Arts Center productions, notably Hairspray. The adult roles tend to be unrewarding here, but Greg Bostwick gives us a more forthright, less vacillating Doc than seen elsewhere. Rob Lecarbeau’s authoritarian Lieutenant Shrenk looks as though he really would bust kids for minor infractions. David A. Sexton’s lighting design does more to imply the danger of the schoolyard than does the rolling steel, and costumer Jimmy Johansmeyer brings back Eisenhower-era couture with more chic than we might expect in the slums. The Cortland Repertory audience was right to demand this superior production. SNT

Wave Rock’n’Roll Reunion will blast off on Sunday, July 3, 7 p.m., at Funk N Waffles Downtown, 307 S. Clinton St. Hosted by Dana Bonn and Carl Cafarelli, the co-deejays of Syracuse Community Radio’s This Is Rock’n’Roll Radio Internet program, the evening will feature The Flashcubes with still-manic musicians Paul Armstrong, Tommy Allen, Gary Frenay and Arty Lenin. Allen, Frenay and Lenin will also splinter off to recreate their pop unit Screen Test.

The annual Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival returns to downtown Syracuse’s Clinton Square for a two-day program on Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30. Larry Luttinger, founder and director of the CNY Jazz Arts Foundation, the organizer of the free festival, made the announcement June 23 at Jazz Central, 441 W. Washington St. The jazz showcase anchors the annual downtown Artsweek, which attracts more than 66,000 visitors to enjoy the Arts and Crafts Festival, the popular Syracuse New Times Street Painting event and the Stage of Nations Blue Rain ECOfest. The wide-ranging lineup even had longtime fest supporter Sen. John DeFrancisco admitting during his remarks that it was “eclectic.” Still, headliners such as the funky Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band (Friday, 6 p.m.) and neo-soulster Scott “Bugs” Allen (Saturday, 6:30 p.m.) should lure music fans. Also on hand will be Brownskin, Soulplay, Soda Ash Six, Prime Time Funk, Atlas XXXVI and Utica’s Easy Money Big Band, plus jam sessions and plenty of wine tastings. DeFrancisco also got the biggest laugh during the presser when Luttinger introduced Eagle Newspapers music scribe Russ Tarby as “a dean of local journalism.” The senator quickly commented, “Whenever someone refers to you as a dean, that means you’re old!” SNT

PASTIFICIO SCRATCHES THAT PASTA ITCH

Pasta Polak. Michael Davis photo

P

astificio is an Italian word meaning “pasta factory.” It’s a fitting name for the new restaurant and bake shop at 205 Brooklea Drive in Fayetteville, where Jennifer Wieczorek Polak, her sister Michelle Wieczorek Rand and their team have been busy cranking out homemade, fresh fettuccini, fusilli, rigatoni and other pasta since mid-May.

A second pasta machine from Italy arrived last week and they’ll soon be

offering dried pastas as well, both in dishes and packaged for purchase. Think Central New York has enough restaurants offering pasta? This place is different. It’s open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also has a

pastry chef on staff, so there’s homemade breads and no shortage of sweet treats in the dessert cases, including cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, and a Wieczorek family favorite called My Father’s White Chocolate Cheesecake. Polak is the chef

and Rand runs the front of the house. Polak grew up in Syracuse’s Tipperary Hill neighborhood and attended Onondaga Community College, where she earned a degree in food service administration. She has worked for a long list of Central New York restaurants: To the Moon, Ambrosia, Lemon Grass, Riley’s and others. From 2005 to 2008, she owned and operated Choices, a takeout restaurant in East Syracuse. For a time, she lived in Colorado and worked as a chef at the Brown Palace, a luxury hotel in Denver, noted for its everything-from-scratch approach to food. “I want everything to be from scratch,’’ Polak says of Pastificio. “I want to serve things you can’t get anywhere else.’’ Breakfast choices include sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, pizza and French toast, plus house-made corned beef hash topped with two eggs. Trumpeter Randy Brecker leads an explosive lineup for the two-day July 4 weekend blast

By Jessica Novak

his weekend’s Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest will celebrate 34 years of the free event with national headliners including pop-soul favorite Michael McDonald, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Larry Coryell and the Eleventh House and The Mavericks. Those musicians will top a two-day bill studded with talent tied to Central New York. Salt City native Paulie Cerra will travel eastbound with his Los Angeles-based group Groove Legacy, while the Second Line Syracuse brass band will bring the beat. Noteified and Julia Goodwin, two attractions who are part of WSYR-Channel 9 news anchor Carrie Lazarus’ “Extraordinary” initiative, will also perform along with the Syracuse Parks and Recreation Stan Colella All Star Band. And a tribute to the late jazz legend Mark Murphy, who was born in Syracuse and

6.29.16 - 7.5.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

raised in Fulton, will feature trumpeter and flugelhornist Randy Brecker, New York Voices, Joe Carello, Ronnie Leigh and more. The festival returns to the scenic campus grounds of Onondaga Community College, 4585 W. Seneca Turnpike, on Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3. Not one to mince words, Jazz Fest founder and executive producer Frank Malfitano declared, “All I can say is fasten your seat belts and get ready for an experience

From left, Randy Brecker, Julia Goodwin and Trombone Shorty. Michael Davis photos

you’re going to remember the rest of your life.” Jazz Fest 34 will recognize Brecker as this year’s artist-in-residence. The award-winning jazz trumpeter and composer has appeared at the Jazz Fest more than any other artist, and has performed at the festival alongside the Brecker Brothers Band, Chuck Loeb, Mike Stern and during a tribute to the late guitarist Hiram Bullock, among others. “Rappin’ Randroid and I have a connection that dates back 44 years to his early days with Larry Coryell’s original Eleventh House band, when I met them at Syracuse University’s Crouse Auditorium in 1972,” Malfitano recalled. “As an artist, his resume is illustrious and his musical range is amazing. Honoring him as this year’s Jazz Fest dedicatee and artist-in-residence is long overdue, but I have a sneaking suspicion he’ll forgive me.” Brecker will perform with Coryell and the Eleventh House on Sunday at 8 p.m. The group had talked about reuniting for years, but didn’t until Coryell’s 70th birthday three years ago. Once everyone had gathered, it was only natural to play together. “It was a heartfelt and emotional concert,” Brecker recalled. “It was great to see everybody and we decided to do some other gigs. After all these years, everyone’s playing is still great.” The lineup will also feature Coryell’s son, Julian, on guitar. “He’s a fantastic player,” Brecker noted. Brecker will also take part in the Mark Murphy tribute, slated for Saturday at 6 p.m. Murphy, known for his scat singing and be-bop vocalese, was discovered by Sammy Davis Jr. when Murphy was performing at a jam session at Syracuse’s Ebony Club in 1953. He scored a 1959 hit with the Steve Allen composition “This Could Be the Start of Something Big,” went on to release more than 40 albums over his six-decade Grammy-nominated career, and made occasional visits to Central New York, including a celebrated performance at the 1998 Jazz Fest. Brecker’s personal history with Murphy, who passed away in October at age 83, will surely make for a poignant set. “I was familiar with him ever since I was a kid,” Brecker recalled. “My dad was a jazz man. My very first Mark Murphy record was when I was in high school and I followed him through the whole gamut of his career. It was a big thrill going from being a fan to playing with him.”

Brecker played several tours with Murphy and is also on several of his records. He saw firsthand what he contributed to jazz. “It’s hard to put it into words,” Brecker says. “He changed everything. His phrasing, the sound of his voice, he was wonderful at scatting. He had a full-bodied sound and he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He stuck to his guns through his whole career. If you talk to younger, popular singers these days, they’ll mention Mark Murphy. He was really an instrumentalist singer with his musicianship and he was just a wonderful, sweet man. He loved singing and he loved life. “When you hear somebody when you’re young, they seem larger than life,” Brecker noted. “He always had that vibe about him to me.” The Mark Murphy salute will mix Brecker with some talent he has shared stages with in the past, along with some newbies, making for a potentially unpredictable set. “This is typical of Frank (Malfitano)’s creativity,” Brecker says. “He’s also a fan. It’s no easy feat to research everyone and put them together. He’s been so instrumental in planning it, but

there will be some spontaneity, too.” The Mavericks, who perform on Saturday at 7:45 p.m., are also celebrating a reunion of sorts. The band that mixes neotraditional country music with Latin and rockabilly flavors played from 1989 to 2004, then stopped until 2012. “Everyone was doing different things,” guitarist Eddie Perez said about the band’s breakup period. “I was touring with Dwight Yoakam, vocalist Raul Malo did several solo records, everyone tried different things. But we started feeling like we were missing the brotherhood and camaraderie of this. It’s not just music and business. When you’re in a band, the best situation is when everyone loves hanging out: laughing and enjoying the journey you’re having together. We were all missing that.” Once the group reunited, they hit the road hard. For the past four years they’ve been playing more than 120 shows annually and have hit venues in Australia, Canada, Europe and across the United States. And Perez doesn’t see the excitement waning any time soon. NEXT PAGE

The Mavericks

“We’re not slowing down,” he declared. “We’re taking time to harness this creative energy we’re having right now. All the bandmates are at the top of their games and we’re really gelling as a unit. It’s a special thing and it doesn’t happen very often.” Jazz Fest impresario Malfitano concurred with Perez’s assessment: “The Mavericks are literally at Rolling Stones-level when it comes to being one of the greatest live bands on the planet. Raul Malo is one of the greatest vocalists I’ve ever heard, and the band’s core group of Eddie Perez, drummer Paul Deakin and pianist Jerry Dale McFadden are completely off the charts. Their genre-bending style and sound is as eclectic as it gets, which explains why they’ve won awards in so many different musical categories. These guys can do anything, and do it better than anyone. The Mavericks will be for this year’s Jazz Fest what Lake Street Dive was last year, and will do exactly what Trombone Shorty did two years ago when he caught the audience completely by surprise and stole the show.” The Mavericks are getting back into the studio with plans to release a double live

Advice from the Artists “It’s tough out there. You have to be very well-rounded. Be proficient in a lot of styles. Enjoy a lot of music. I like them all. I like to write my own music and do clinics and workshops and I would recommend that path, but you have to practice every day and really want to do it. It’s really competitive and in the digital world, things get stolen. You have to work very hard to make ends meet. But it’s great to be a musician doing what you love.” — Randy Brecker

vinyl record in the fall. They’ve also been consistently working on new material and Christmas music for the upcoming season. “I’m so fortunate to be in this band of musicians,” Perez said. “Some of the best musicians in the world are in this band. What we do is a specific thing. It’s old school. Our essence and energy still comes from being a garage band, teenagers with dreams in their eyes. That’s what we try to convey. That’s our magic, 25 years strong into it.” The group will perform songs from their discography, including their 2015 release Mono, which features Perez’s son, Jett, on the cover. Although their music is a blend of influences, Perez noted the soul of their sound as the most important element. “We always think: Does it strike a chord in us? Does it make us move? Does it make us feel,” he said. “If you’re playing 120 shows a year, first and foremost, you have to love what you’re putting forth. My sole purpose is to stay creative in the midst of all the negativity in the world. It’s essential to surround yourself with like-minded people. That’s how you stay fresh and stay moving. “I hope our music brings as much joy to people out there as we enjoy it. It’s a non-stop joy fest and a very high-energy show. We are so grateful. Fans give us the opportunity when they come see us. I hope they have some fun with us.” SNT

“Search your heart. Really figure out what your musical journey is going to be and what you want it to be. What do you want to say to the world? That’s what will put you on the right path to doing so. I believe the world always needs artists, poets and communicators, especially if the message is love. We need more of that. And most of all, be honest and be real about who you are in the midst of it all. Listen to your gut instinct. Lots of people will tell you who they think you should be. Search yourself first so you can have a focus. You can dictate your own experience.”

ARIES (March 21-April 19) During winter,

some bears spend months hibernating. Their body temperatures and heart rates drop. They breathe drowsily. Their movements are minimal. Many hummingbirds engage in a similar slowdown -- but they do it every single night. By day they are among the most manic creatures on earth, flapping their wings and gathering sustenance with heroic zeal. When the sun slips below the horizon, they rest with equal intensity. In my estimation, Aries, you don’t need a full-on immersion in idleness like the bears. But you’d benefit from a shorter stint, akin to the hummingbird’s period of dormancy.

A psychic predicted that sometime this year I will fall in love with a convenience store clerk who’s secretly a down-on-his-luck prince of a small African country. She said that he and I have a unique destiny. Together we will break the world’s record for dancing without getting bitten in a pit of cobras while drunk on absinthe on our honeymoon. But there’s a problem. I didn’t have time to ask the psychic how I’ll meet my soulmate, and I can’t afford to pay $250 for another reading. Can you help? - Mopey Taurus.” Dear Mopey: The psychic lied. Neither she nor anyone else can see what the future will bring you. Why? Because what happens will be largely determined by your own actions. I suggest you celebrate this fact. It’s the perfect time to do so: July is Feed Your Willpower Month.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Of all the concert pianos in the world, 80 percent of them are made by Steinway. A former president of the company once remarked that in each piano, “243 taut strings exert a pull of 40,000 pounds on an iron frame.” He said it was “proof that out of great tension may come great harmony.” That will be a potential talent of yours in the coming weeks, Gemini. Like a Steinway piano, you will have the power to turn tension into beauty. But will you actually accomplish this noble goal, or will your efforts be less melodious? It all depends on how much poised self-discipline you summon. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Once upon a

time, weren’t you the master builder who never finished building your castle? Weren’t you the exile who wandered aimlessly while fantasizing about the perfect sanctuary of the past or the sweet safety zone of the future? Didn’t you perversely nurture the ache that arose from your sense of not feeling at home in the world? I hope that by now you have renounced all of those kinky inclinations. If you haven’t, now would be an excellent time to do so. How might you reinvest the mojo that will be liberated by the demise of those bad habits?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) In accordance with

the astrological omens, I have selected three aphorisms by poet James Richardson to guide you. Aphorism #1: “The worst helplessness is forgetting there is help.” My commentary: You have the power to avoid that fate. Start by identifying the sources of healing and assistance that are available to you. Aphorism #2: “You do not have to be a fire to keep one burning.” My commentary: Generate all the heat and light you can, yes, but don’t torch yourself. Aphorism #3: “Patience is not very different from courage. It just takes longer.” My commentary: But it may not take a whole lot longer.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may not know this, but I am the founder and CEO of Proud To Be Humble, an acclaimed organization devoted to minimizing vanity. It is my sworn duty to protest any ego that exceeds the acceptable limits as defined by the Geneva Convention on Narcissism. However, I now find myself conflicted. Because of the lyrical beauty and bighearted charisma that are currently emanating from your ego, I am unable, in good conscience, to ask you to tone yourself down. In fact, I hereby grant you a license to expand your self-love to unprecedented proportions. You may also feel free to unleash a series of lovely brags.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The next 28 days

will not be a favorable period to sit around passively wishing to be noticed. Nor will it be a good time to wait to be rescued or to trust in others to instigate desirable actions. On the other hand, it will be an excellent phase to be an initiator: to decide what needs to be done, to state your intentions concisely, and to carry out your master plan with alacrity and efficiency. To help ensure your success during the next 28 days, make this declaration each morning before breakfast: “I don’t want to OBSERVE the show. I want to BE the show.”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “In life, as in bicy-

cling, pedal when you have to, coast when you can.” So says author James Lough, and now I’m passing on his advice to you -- just in time for your transition from the heavy-pedaling season to the coasting-is-fun phase. I suspect that at this juncture in your life story you may be a bit addicted to the heavy pedaling. You could be so accustomed to the intensity that you’re inclined to be suspicious of an opportunity to enjoy ease and grace. Don’t be like that. Accept the gift with innocent gratitude.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “When a jet flies low overhead, every glass in the cupboard sings,” writes aphorist James Richardson. “Feelings are like that: choral, not single; mixed, never pure.” That’s always true, but it will be intensely true for you in the coming weeks. I hope you can find a way to tolerate, even thrive on, the flood of ambiguous complexity. I hope you won’t chicken out and try to pretend that your feelings are one-dimensional and easily understandable. In my opinion, you are ripe to receive rich lessons in the beauty and power of mysterious emotions. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Pop artist Andy Warhol said that in the future, everyone would be famous for 15 minutes. His idea had a resonance with the phrase “nine days’ wonder,” which as far back as Elizabethan times referred to a person or event that captured the public’s fascination for a while. You Capricorns are entering a phase when you’re far more likely than usual to bask in the spotlight. Between now and September 2017, I bet you’ll garner at least a short burst of glory, acclaim or stardom -- perhaps much more. Are you ready for your close-up? Have you prepped for the influx of attention that may be coming your way? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) One of my

readers, Jay O’Dell, told me this story: “After my cancer surgery, a nurse said to me, ‘You may as well try magical thinking. Regular thinking hasn’t helped.’ I said to the nurse, ‘Well, why the hell not?’ That was seven years ago.” In bringing O’Dell’s testimony to your attention, I don’t mean to suggest you will have any health problems that warrant a strong dose of magical thinking. Not at all. But you may get wrapped up in a psychological twist or a spiritual riddle that would benefit from magical thinking. And what exactly is magical thinking? Here’s one definition: The stories that unfold in your imagination have important effects on what actually happens to you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Let’s talk about

X-factors and wild cards and strange attractors. By their very nature, they are unpredictable and ephemeral, even when they offer benevolent breakthroughs. So you may not even notice their arrival if you’re entranced by your expectations and stuck in your habitual ways. But here’s the good news, Pisces: Right now you are not unduly entranced by your expectations or stuck in your habits. Odds are high that you will spy the sweet twists of fate -- the X-factors and wild cards and strange attractors -- as they float into view. You will pounce on them and put them to work while they’re still fresh. And then they will help you hike your ratings or get the funding you need or animate the kind of love that heals.
