NEWS WEIRD By Chuck Shepherd

Jen Sorensen

Insanity Defined

Police and prosecutors in Dallas, appropriately sensitive at having been the site of the 1963 killing of President John F. Kennedy, have apparently taken out their shame on assassination buff Robert Groden. As The Dallas Observer reported in September, Groden has been ticketed by police dozens of times for operating book sales booths near the “grassy knoll,” site of the alleged “second shooter” of the president — and yet he prevails in court every single time: 82 straight, and counting. (Tip for visitors from the Observer: Never publicly utter “grassy knoll” in Dallas, as it seems particularly to offend the police.)

Oops!

The Continuing Crisis

Stephen Mader, 25, native of Weirton, W.Va., and former Weirton police officer, is fighting to get his job back after being fired for not being quick enough on the trigger. When Ronald Williams Jr. made a ham-handed attempt in May at “suicide by cop,” it was Mader who, rather than shooting, tried to talk Williams down, based on his Marine Corps and police academy training. But when Williams pointed his unloaded gun at two of Mader’s colleagues, and one of them quickly shot the man to death, police officials fired Mader for having been insufficiently aggressive.

Thanks But No Thanks

Few U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan speak the native Pashto or Dari, and the war prospects would be dim were it not for courageous Afghan civilians who aid the United States as interpreters under promise of protection and future emigration to the states. However, the congressional battle over immigration policy has delayed entry for about 10,000 interpreters, who, along with their families, face imminent death if they remain in Afghanistan. Some in Congress also regard Afghans as riskier immigrants despite the interpreters’ demonstrated loyalty.

Suspicions Confirmed

Master baker Stefan Fischer filed a lawsuit recently against Bakery of New York for wrongful firing because he refused to use “bug-infested” flour to make batches of bread. According to Fischer, when he informed management of the bugs in the facility’s 3,000-pound flour silo, he was told simply to make “multigrain” bread, which Fischer took to mean that fewer diners would complain if they heard “crunching” while eating multigrain.

sentenced again (two years, six months) in August for a purse-snatching from a traveler in Tokyo’s Ueno Station. “Why,” asked the judge, does Auntie Sato keep at it, especially since she also owns property and has rental income? Said she, “I thought about (stopping),” but “gave up. It’s hopeless.” Faisal Shaikh, awaiting his cellphone theft case to be called at the Thane sessions court in Mumbai, India, in August (one of several theft charges pending), wandered up to the court stenographer’s desk and swiped her cellphone. He was apprehended shortly afterward near the courthouse.

By August, Raymond Mazzarella was fed up with the tree in his neighbor’s yard in Pittston Township, Pa., as it was continuously dripping sap onto his car. So he grabbed a chainsaw, cut through the 36-inch-wide trunk, and thought he fixed the problem. However, the tree fell directly onto Mazzarella’s small apartment house, dispossessing five tenants and, ultimately, forcing inspectors to condemn the entire building.

Leading Economic Indicator

News Corporation Australia reported in September the enviable success of a 16-year-old British entrepreneur, Ms. Beau Jessup, who has so far earned about $84,000 with a simple online app to help rich Chinese parents select prosperous-sounding English names for their babies. Users choose among 12 personality traits they hope their baby to have, then receive three suggestions, including a list of famous people with those names. Jessup got the idea when living in China and noticing that some babies of the rich were given lame names, such as “Gandalf” and “Cinderella.”

Chinese Management Techniques

About 200 employees at a travel service in Shandong Province were fined the equivalent of $6.50 each recently for failing to comply with orders to “comment” (favorably, one supposes) on the general manager’s daily posts to the Twitter-like internet site Sina Weibo. In June, a motivational trainer working with employees of the Changzhi Zhang-

ze Rural Commercial Bank reportedly told the poor-performing bank personnel, among the 200 at the session, to “prepare to be beaten.” He then walked among the workers, whacking some with a stick, shaving the heads of the males and cutting the hair of the females.

Weird Science

Trees talk to each other and recognize their offspring, according to Australian ecology researcher Suzanne Simard, most recently lecturing on the influential video series TED Talks. Trees are not independent organisms but belong to arboreal “families” with characteristics identifying them to other family members. According to Simard, “mother” trees that ordinarily expand their roots wildly may hold back to give nearby “kinfolk” tree roots a chance to spread. Using isotope tracing, she learned of trees passing healthful carbon, via fungi, to neighboring family seedlings, which she said renders the seedlings more resistant to future stress.

Can’t Stop Myself

Recurring Themes

A middle-aged man was reported in three incidents in the Aberdeen, Scotland, area in August and September to be approaching women and asking for piggyback rides. He was still at large. In September, England’s Derby Crown Court sentenced Sanjeev Sandhu, 29, to six months in jail because of the “extreme” pornography on his phone. One image was of children having sex, but the judge also noted images featuring humans having sex with dogs, a donkey, a bull and, in another case, a fish.

How to Tell If You’re Drunk

Dave Little, 27, vacationing on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza, Spain — and partying hard, apparently — was at press time still haggling with eBay, trying to get out of his “successful” auction bid — blamed on a fingering misadventure on his phone—of 28,500 British pounds (about $37,000) for a Scania Irizar Century bus. eBay, of course, warns that bids are legally binding. Little believes that his dad had earlier searched bus information on the phone and that alcohol then affected his own navigation between screens.

JAZZ FEST 35 TO REMAIN AT OCC

T

he recent fervor concerning Onondaga County’s ultimatum about moving the Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest from the Onondaga Community College campus to the Lakeview Amphitheater gave members of the community ringing ears. Jazz Fest impresario Frank Malfitano, on vacation at the time of the media squeal, came back early to clear the air when he set up a Sept. 21 press conference at Second Olivet Missionary Baptist Church on Syracuse’s West Side. Malfitano invited County Executive Joanie Mahoney to the event, as she cordially reinforced the duo’s friendship and the county government’s full support of the annual music festival. Several times during her time at the lectern, Mahoney repeated variations on her declaration that “decisions about Jazz Fest logistics should be left to Frank.” To prove his point about the free festival, Malfitano reinforced the origins of music and community. “We’re in a black church because this is where the music we present at Jazz Fest was born,” he said. “I don’t know how to repay that debt ever, but gospel came from the black church, and that led to rhythm and blues and blues and jazz.” The peaceful settings with pastor Rev. Cyrus L. Thornton giving his blessing, gave the opportunity for Mahoney and Malfitano to publicly kiss each other on the cheek and hug several times. What it came down to was some profound miscommunication — acknowledged by Malfitano and Mahoney — and a misunderstanding on the public’s part. “It’s been overexaggerated,” said the county executive, who jokingly chided Malfitano because he does not own a cellphone. “The chatter on social media helped perpetuate negative and positive responses.”

6

9.28.16 - 10.4.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

The festival was wedged into the County Parks Department section of the proposed Onondaga County budget. The 450-page budget will be finalized shortly and will be followed by a public hearing on Thursday, Oct. 6, and voted on five days later. Malfitano said Onondaga County has always “stepped up to the plate.” Out of the county’s proposed $1.3 billion budget, his festival totals a drop in the bucket: $75,000. Aside from sponsors M&T Bank, Price Chopper, C&S Companies, National Grid and several other contributors, Jazz Fest does not receive city, state or federal funding. “I try to navigate the Good Ship Jazz Fest through political waters. We don’t always vet things with the community perhaps the way we should,” he admitted. “This time we’re going to do it right. We’re going to be very transparent.” He said the festival raises $400,000 per year and receives $200,000 in donations of goods and services. As far as trying to find the monetary investments, the recent publicity has put the 2017 county budget ahead of the game, according to Mahoney. She even joked that if the public told the County Legislature that she was against allocating more money to the event, the members — even the staunchest conservative Republicans — would vote to give more.

Whether or not Jazz Fest moves from Onondaga Community College to the Lakeview Amphitheater beyond 2017 is up to Malfitano, said Mahoney, who often expressed her hope that such a move might eventually happen. She cited the amphitheater’s sound system as a plus. However, she acknowledged that Malfitano still had one more year remaining on the OCC contract with Jazz Fest. Malfitano labeled Lakeview a “worldclass venue” after seeing summer concerts featuring Ringo Starr and Hall and Oates. “We would have to take a hard look at the Amp and think the venue through,“ he said. Yet Malfitano also spoke fondly about OCC’s attributes, such as the story of meeting his wife there, as well as Jazz Fest’s campus presence offering an opportunity to entice future students. He’s also tired of switching venues: “The next time we move, if we move, it’s going to be a big move and it’s going to be the last move.” In the past five years the festival relocated twice. The 70-year-old Malfitano noted the upcoming 35th festival will be a milestone that only about a half-dozen other jazz festivals across the country have accomplished. “I’ve been doing this half my life!” he exclaimed. Syracuse’s nomadic Jazz Fest has graced several places throughout the county, including Jamesville Beach, Long Branch Park and Clinton Square. Malfitano admitted to some setbacks along the way, especially the 1983 stint at Song Mountain Ski Resort (“I stumbled. I fell. I failed,” Malfitano said about his past festivals. “But I got up!”), but he also boasted about having to move from downtown to the college because of the increasingly large crowds. The press conference lured local musicians including Frank DeFonda, Paul Davie and Dave Hanlon, as well as small business owners such as Tom Greenwood, who runs an East Syracuse winery. Greenwood praised Malfitano for his work and loyalty to local enterprises, bringing in and showcasing small businesses, especially those involved in the beverage and agriculture industries. “Jazz Fest more than returns the investment to Onondaga County,” Mahoney stated. “Frank is one of the few people in this county you can point to for making big things happen. I defer to the expert, and we’ll do it where you want to do it. You have my full support.” SNT

POINTED DRAMA PROBES THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

W

e know that the phenomenally misshapen John Merrick actually existed in 1880s London because dozens of photographs survive, and his twisted skeleton was preserved for science. Merrick was one of our fellow mortals who, through random fate, found himself first ostracized and later exploited in sideshows. Are we tempted to feel that he is an exaggeration of our worst fears about ourselves that make us “different,” our neuroses, our ethnicity, or sexual styles? Such questions are very much the point of Bernard Pomerance’s stage play The Elephant Man now in a well-appointed revival that runs through Oct. 8 at the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild. Merrick’s story has been told many times, beginning with conscientious non-fiction accounts. Confusingly, Pomerance’s play appeared in New York City in 1979, almost simultaneously with director David Lynch’s excellent but very different 1980 movie with Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt and Anne Bancroft. The Pomerance drama has held up better, in part because it calls for three outstanding performances. In the play Merrick wears no prosthetic and appears often in his shorts and barefoot. A half-dozen stars have fought to take the role, including Mark Hamill, Billy Crudup and David Bowie. Bradley Cooper’s Broadway revival in 2014 earned him a Tony Award nomination.

8

9.28.16 - 10.4.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

We first see the Elephant Man (Alan Stillman) through the eyes of benign Dr. Frederick Treves (Benjamin Sills), a young man destined to rise in society. Treves must always contend with a severe administrator, Carr-Gomm (a precise Simon Moody), a man of science who imposes limits. Treves seeks to rescue Merrick from freak shows, first in London’s shabby Whitechapel, and more alarmingly in Brussels, where he’s grouped with the singing, misshapen Pinhead girls (Jaclyn Matthews, Korrie Taylor and Beverly Poznoski). Treves arranges to have Merrick housed in a London hospital. After Carr-Gomm gets a letter describing the case printed in The Times describing the case, authorities raise funds to allow the Elephant Man to stay on indefinitely so that Treves may study him. The hope is that Merrick might lead a life resembling the normal. Progress is not smooth. One nurse (Beverly Poznoski) boasts that she has taken care of lepers in Africa and can deal with any challenge, but recoils in horror when she sees the patient in a bathtub.

Unexpectedly, Merrick becomes a celebrity attraction, prodded in part by Treves’ rising status as physician to the prince of Wales. Princesses and duchesses want to be seen with Merrick. Perhaps this is a posh variation on his former role in the freak show, as his one-time handler Ross (Simon Moody, again) complains. Bishop How (Daniel Bostick) declares that the Elephant Man is a “true Christian” and much like him. Most visitors affect to see themselves in Merrick. But the most intriguing visitor is a glamorous woman from the theater, Mrs. Madge Kendal (Binaifer Dabu). As a trained actress, she restrains her instinctive revulsion and befriends Merrick, speaking of literature and love, something he deeply craves, specifically, Romeo and Juliet. When Mrs. Kendal brings him a model of St. Phillip’s Church, he works on it with his good hand, saying it is an “imitation of grace.” Treves responds that all of humanity is a mere illusion of heaven, to which Merrick answers that God should have used both hands. Merrick’s complaint that he will not only not know love or the perfection of the female form leads to a tender, heartbreaking nude scene that will surely cause comment, which should be favorable. Director William Edward White achieves dramatic poignancy without titillation. For longtime supporting player Alan Stillman, Merrick is the role of a career. Even without makeup and very few clothes, he’s almost unrecognizable. The limitations of his twisted face and crippled limbs mean that all emotions must be understated, creating much with little. Binaifer Dabu, one of our most versatile players, has never looked grander than in costume designer Kate Kisselstein’s gowns. Benjamin Sills’ Treves is the good doctor who does not always have our affection. Getting Pomerance’s The Elephant Man on stage has been a decades-long labor of love for director White. Some of this is evident in the props he has assembled: pictures of the historical Elephant Man, his skeleton, an actual model of St. Phillip’s, and 21 scene titles written in a Victorian hand. Navroz Dabu’s sets and the Kisselstein costumes make The Elephant Man one of the best-looking Baldwinsville Theatre Guild productions ever. SNT

t’s fall: prime time to visit the Finger Lakes wineries and wine trails. Autumn brings throngs of visitors to the region, for leaf-peeping in a picture-perfect setting, and for the wine. The narrow roads can be crowded with buses and limos, as tasting rooms can quickly become packed with partiers. Are you interested in a more personal wine-tasting experience, away from the maddening crowds? Here are some smaller wineries to have on your list. Boundary Breaks Vineyard. with his partner, Diana Wright. There is also a Gewurztraminer on the tasting list and a red wine is coming in 2017. Until recently, you had to make an appointment to sample what Boundary Breaks has to offer, but a tasting room was added earlier this year. It’s bright and spacious, with a beautiful view of Seneca Lake. The winery is a bit off the beaten path, near Lodi, in the “Banana Belt” of the Finger Lakes. If you like Riesling and want to learn more about Riesling, Boundary Breaks is a must-stop. It’s open daily, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; buses and limos by appointment only.

Several tasting flights are available, including a Riesling-only flight, a Pinot Noir-only flight and a flight that mixes some of each. The tasting room is small and intimate and the staff is well trained and super-informative. Barry Family Cellars partners with local growers and specializes in smallbatch vinifera wines, including Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. You can taste them at the newly opened Barry Family Cellars tasting room in Burdett, on the east side of Seneca Lake. The tasting room on the west side of Seneca Lake is small and rustic and you’ll get lots of personal attention. Shaw specializes in dry wines, both white and red, made in small batches, including Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s the only winery in the Finger Lakes to offer Vin L’Orange, or orange wine. It’s not made with oranges; the name refers to the technique used to make it. The grape juice has extended contact with the grape skins and seeds, which results in orange-colored wine. Shaw is open daily, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., during autumn. Standing Stone is one of the few wineries in the region (along with McGregor Vineyard, on Keuka Lake) to offer Saperavi, a dark, inky red wine that has its origins in another cool climate, the Republic of Georgia. NATURE CALLS AT CAZENOVIA ART PARK

Stone Quarry Hill celebrates 25 years of celebrating art and the environment B y Chr istopher M alone M ichael Davis photos

n 2014, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park was highlighted by National Geographic magazine as one of the 10 best sculpture parks in the world. Yet the 104-acre park located in the rolling hills of Cazenovia is still something of a Central New York hidden treasure despite its worldwide acclaim.

While exploring the park’s grounds, allow your mind to wander, to decipher what’s real and what’s conjured from imagination. The two are purposefully blended, which was the vision of Stone Quarry founders Dorothy and Bob Riester. The craving for adventure is satisfied. Thoughts and emotions define experience. Stephen Brucker, visitor services and promotions coordinator for Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, guided Syracuse New Times reporter during a recent visit. The tour began in the offices, which have a quasi cabin-in-the-woods appeal, then moved to the artist-in-residence living quarters before venturing up the stone pathway toward the Riester home. Part of the evolution of the grounds, after its incorporation as an art park in

1991, was to share space as an inspirational laboratory for local, national and international artists. Stone Quarry houses six artists-in-residence each year for sixweek increments. Up the hill, in the art barn and garage, artists are welcome to rent space, perform demonstrations and showcase their artworks during and after their completion. The “Third Iteration” installation bends along the driveway in Tim Burton-fashion, stretching a quarter-mile along the path to the house on the hill. It’s composed of a series of looming triangular arcs. Faded green and unraveling flags wrap around one of the 30-foot-long recycled lamppost legs of each segment. “Contemplating Man,” one of Dorothy Riester’s creations, stands atop the hill

and looks over the land with hands in pockets. Despite being a great listener, he’ll offer silence instead of answers. The Stone Quarry concept was put into motion in 1958, when the Riesters admired this special nook of Madison County and purchased 23 acres. The Riester home was built in the early 1960s as a summer residence, although the couple continued to buy surrounding acres through the years. (Riester will celebrate her centennial birthday later this year.) Across the driveway is an A-frame facility, containing a workspace for artists. The art barn, a laboratory-like garage, accommodates various mediums of expression. “The goal of Dorothy Riester was to bring nature indoors and the artist into

nature,” said Brucker, an artist himself. Activities within nature — hiking, meditating, reading — can influence a piece. Upon entering the earthy home, visitors will have to step down. Brucker said that the supporting beams were too big and low, and it was easy for Bob Riester to bump his head. Digging down inches solved the problem instead of reconfiguring the ceiling and walls. When strolling into the den, note the familiar musty smell reminiscent of any grandparents’ home; it’s also important to check out the fireplace hood Dorothy had to build three times. After climbing the staircase, which did not have risers — Dorothy said they impeded the ability to look through the space, so they were removed — the tour led to the couple’s bedroom. The strategically centered window is the perfect perch from which to see Cazenovia and Oneida lakes in the same frame. The first floor’s bird’s nest-shaped library, complete with packed bookshelves, continues to serve as a creative and interactive space. There aren’t any electronic gadgets aside from an old radio. There is a piano, which she didn’t play, and so temptations for distraction are limited. The windows are set higher on the walls. This prevents anyone relaxing in the space from noticing possible distractions, such as humans or creatures walking by. Tours of the Riester home are available upon request at Stone Quarry, which is open year-round (call 655-3196 for details). Yet there are plenty of other activities to enjoy as well, such as yoga, art demonstrations and workshops. Children’s camps take place during the summer, and snowshoeing can be enjoyed in the winter. Brucker’s tour continued on the Vista Trail, beginning with “Threshold” by Takafumi Ide, which is a white outline of the artist’s steps and a front door to his Brooklyn brownstone. Climbing the steps to ring the bell is discouraged. The piece is wired to accommodate a motion-detector light bulb. Meander through the trees with silver badges, each bearing one verb. Walking further on the trail there is a horse climbing out of the ground, and it’s wearing an expression of panic. From its chest protrudes two small hands, and one is

holding the beast’s heart. No, this is not Atreyu encouraging and pulling Artax to get through the Swamp of Sadness, but a tale of love in itself. There is a face that stretches from a rock in a similar fashion to Freddy Kreuger, while another man has his face buried in the pages of an oversized book. Whether the hardcover fell on top of him or came alive for a facial attack is unclear. Enter the “Garden of Reading,” which features one of the park’s more popular pieces of art by David Harper. It shows the evolution of art being taken from nature. Or is it retreating back to nature? From a log sprout shelves and books, which also evolve from blocks lacking detail to shaped books. “We’re not sure how long this is going to last,” said Brucker, pointing out that the natural decay of the wood can also be a hazard. “Some people feel the need to interact with our art.” He said that interaction is important, but protecting the art and the safety of a person are also important. To help keep the exhibit alive, people have added books and sheet music to the piece. As Stone Quarry celebrates its silver anniversary, the land can rest easy due to having a long lifespan. There is an easement with the town, stated Brucker. There isn’t a guarantee this land will forever be dedicated or housing an art park, yet because of the Riesters’ efforts their entire property will remain protected even if the sculptures are removed. Of course, who would want that to happen? The outdoor adventuring can generate comfort simply from feeling lost. If Stone Quarry Hill Art Park feels like a whole new world, imagine what else is out there. SNT

Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. The following notice is intended only for those defendants who are the owners of the premises sought to be foreclosed or who are liable upon the debt for which the mortgage stands as security. is disputed, we will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of any judgment against you representing the debt and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to you by the herein debt collector. Upon your written request within 30 days after receipt of this notice, there herein debt collector will provide you with the name and address of the original creditor if different from the current creditor. ence between a love warrior and a love worrier? Love warriors work diligently to keep enhancing their empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence. Love worriers fret so much about not getting the love they want that they neglect to develop their intimacy skills. Love warriors are always vigilant for how their own ignorance may be sabotaging togetherness, while love worriers dwell on how their partner’s ignorance is sabotaging togetherness. Love warriors stay focused on their relationship’s highest goals, while love worriers are preoccupied with every little relationship glitch. I bring this to your attention, Aries, because the next seven weeks will be an excellent time to become less of a love worrier and more of a love warrior.

deal with a provocative opportunity to reinvent and reinvigorate your approach to work? My guess is that if you ignore this challenge, it will devolve into an obstruction. If you embrace it, on the other hand, you will be led to unforeseen improvements in the way you earn money and structure your daily routine. Here’s the paradox: Being open to seemingly impractical considerations will ultimately turn out to be quite practical.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Is it possible that you’re on the verge of reclaiming some of the innocent wisdom you had as a child? Judging from the current astrological omens, I suspect it is. If all goes well, you will soon be gifted with a long glimpse of your true destiny — a close replica of the vision that bloomed in you at a tender age. And this will, in turn, enable you to actually see magic unicorns and play with mischievous fairies and eat clouds that dip down close to the earth. And not only that: Having a holy vision of your original self will make you even smarter than you already are. For example, you could get insights about how to express previously inexpressible parts of yourself. You might discover secrets about how to attract more of the love you have always felt deprived of.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Thank you for all the

entertainment you’ve provided in the past 12 months, Libra. Since shortly before your birthday in 2015, you have taken lively and gallant actions to rewrite history. You have banished a pesky demon and repaired a hole in your soul. You’ve educated the most immature part of yourself and nurtured the most neglected part of yourself. To my joyful shock, you have even worked to transform a dysfunctional romantic habit that in previous years had subtly undermined your ability to get the kind of intimacy you seek. What’s next? Here’s my guess: an unprecedented exemption from the demands of the past.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Are you able to

expand while you are contracting, and vice versa? Can you shed mediocre comforts and also open your imagination to gifts that await you at the frontier? Is it possible to be skeptical toward ideas that shrink your world and people who waste your time, even as you cultivate optimism and innocence about the interesting challenges ahead of you? Here’s what I think, Scorpio: Yes, you can. At least for right now, you are more flexible and multifaceted than you might imagine.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You Sagittari-

ans are famous for filling your cups so full they’re in danger of spilling over. Sometimes the rest of us find this kind of cute. On other occasions, we don’t enjoy getting wine splashed on our shoes. But I suspect that in the coming weeks, the consequences of your tendency to overflow will be mostly benign — perhaps even downright beneficial. So I suggest you experiment with the pleasures of surging and gushing. Have fun as you escape your niches and transcend your containers. Give yourself permission to seek adventures that might be too extravagant for polite company. Now here’s a helpful reminder from your fellow Sagittarian, poet Emily Dickinson: “You cannot fold a flood and put it in a drawer.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) I believe that

you to tell me about the places and situations where you feel safe and fragile and timid. I want to know about where you feel safe and strong and bold. Are there sanctuaries that nurture your audacious wisdom? Are there natural sites that tease out your primal willpower and help you clarify your goals? Go to those power spots. Allow them to exalt you with their transformative blessings. Pray and sing and dance there. And maybe find a new oasis to excite and incite you, as well. Your creative savvy will bloom in November if you nurture yourself now with this magic.

during the coming weeks you will have an extra amount of freedom from fate. The daily grind won’t be able to grind you down. The influences that typically tend to sap your joie de vivre will leave you in peace. Are you ready to take full advantage of this special dispensation? Please say YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES. Be alert for opportunities to rise above the lowest common denominatorsx. Be aggressive about rejecting the trivial questions that trap everyone in low expectations. Here are my predictions: Your willpower will consistently trump your conditioning. You won’t have to play by the old rules, but will instead have extra sovereignty to invent the future.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) One of your old reliable

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) According to

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Attention! Warning! One of your signature fears is losing its chokehold on your imagination. If this trend continues, its power to scare you may diminish more than 70 percent by Nov. 1. And then what will you do? How can you continue to plug away at your goals if you don’t have worry and angst and dread to motivate you? I suppose you could shop around for a replacement fear — a new prod to keep you on the true and righteous path. But you might also want to consider an alternative: the possibility of drawing more of the energy you need by feeding your lust for life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You know that inner work you’ve been doing with such diligence? I’m referring to those psycho-spiritual transformations you have been attending to in the dark; the challenging but oddly gratifying negotiations you’ve been carrying on with your secret self; the steady, strong future you’ve been struggling to forge out of the chaos? Well, I foresee you making a big breakthrough in the coming weeks. The progress you’ve been earning, which up until now has been mostly invisible to others, will finally be seen and appreciated. The vows you uttered so long ago will, at last, yield at least some of the tangible results you’ve pined for.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) I’m not asking

formulas may temporarily be useless or even deceptive. An ally could be withholding an important detail from you. Your favorite psychological crutch is in disrepair, and your go-to excuse is no longer viable. And yet I think you’re going to be just fine, Leo. Plan B will probably work better than Plan A. Secondary sources and substitutes should provide you with all the leverage you need. And I bet you will finally capitalize on an advantage that you have previously neglected. For best results, be vigilant for unexpected help.

my analysis of the astrological omens, you can expect an unlikely coincidence or two in the coming days. You should also be alert for helpfully prophetic dreams, clear telepathic messages, and pokes from tricky informers. In fact, I suspect that useful hints and clues will be swirling in extra abundance, sometimes in the form of direct communications from reliable sources, but on occasion as mysterious signals from strange angels.
