Fangs For The Memories

Coolidge, Ariz., resident Victor Pratt boasts that he’s played with snakes his whole life. So when a rattlesnake slithered by during a family party at a nearby lake on Sept. 7, Pratt grabbed the viper and showed the kids “how to catch it and I was playing with it like little kids do. I wasn’t thinking. I was showing off,” he admitted to Fox 10 News. The rattler apparently didn’t want to play along and bit Pratt on his face and neck. Pratt’s sons quickly drove him to a nearby emergency room, and he was later airlifted to Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix, where Dr. Steven Curry treated him. “There is a 100 percent chance he would have died if he’d not made it to the hospital within minutes,” Curry noted.

Pratt remained unconscious for several days. He told reporters he had learned his lesson and would not play with rattlesnakes again.

What’s in a Name?

Carrie L. Hitt, 42, of Junction City, Ore., died after her Ford Bronco left the road on Territorial Highway and rolled on Oct. 4. Hitt was ejected from her car and then struck by a second vehicle, driven

by Nadine M. Killmaster, 32, of Yakima, Wash. Oregon State Police told The Register-Guard they believe Hitt was using a mobile phone just before the crash.

A family in Coventry, England, are “quite mortified” after calling the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in September to rescue a lizard peeking from underneath a bed in their home. But when officer Vic Hurr arrived at the home, she discovered the “lizard” was not a “lizard at all, it was a pink stripy sock.” The dirty imposter sock, about 7 inches long and 2 inches wide, wasn’t moving, Hurr noted. “I think the family eventually saw the funny side,” an RSPCA spokeswoman told The Independent. “The sock had obviously been there quite a while. It was a typical teenager’s bedroom, I suppose.”

It’s Good to Have Goals

Octogenarians Ray and Wilma Yoder of Goshen, Ind., have finally achieved a goal they set nearly 40 years ago: to visit every Cracker Barrel location in the United States. On Aug. 31, they checked off the last of 645 stops in Tualatin, Ore., where they each received a Four-Star apron, the company’s highest honor.

The Yoders once stopped at 10 Cracker Barrels in one day as they traveled up the East Coast. “I’ve always walked away feeling refreshed,” Ray Yoder told ABC News. “For two old people, we’re pretty fast moving.”

Curses, Foiled Again

Adam Darrough, 29, of Little Rock, Ark., tried to elude officers who had arrived at his girlfriend’s house to arrest him by climbing out a back window. But

when that didn’t work, he hid in her attic.

Meanwhile, Erinique Hill, 20, held police at bay outside her home. Things went south for Darrough when he fell through the attic floor, and Little Rock police officers arrested him for a number of felonies, including hindering arrest.

Quick-thinking paramedics in Dorset, England, saved the life of a man whose fishing outing went south when a dover sole jumped down his throat and blocked his windpipe on Oct. 5. Sam Quilliam, 28, had just caught the 5 1/2-inch-long fish and went to give it a kiss when it wriggled free and lodged in his throat. “I ran round the pier like a headless chicken and then passed out,” Quilliam told The Guardian. When first responders arrived, Quilliam was not breathing, but friends were performing CPR. Paramedic Matt Harrison said: “It was clear that we needed to get the fish out or this patient was not going to survive. I was able to eventually dislodge the tip of the tail and very carefully, so as not to break the tail off, I tried to remove it — although the fish’s barbs and gills were getting stuck on the way back up.” Finally, the fish

Lindsey Partridge of Ontario, Canada, booked herself at a pet-friendly Super 8 in Georgetown, Ky., for the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover on Oct. 4. At check-in, Partridge asked the front desk clerk if the pet policy included horses, to which the clerk answered, “Aw, I wouldn’t mind. You could do that.” So Partridge returned to her horse trailer and brought Blizz, her retired racehorse, into the hotel. Partridge and Blizz took a video and a few photos in the room, but eventually Partridge took Blizz to the Kentucky Horse Park, where the rooms are more suited to equine visitors. The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that Blizz took third place in the trail competition during the event.

Questionable Judgment

Tucson, Ariz., firefighters were called on Oct. 15 to a mobile home park after a resident there tried to remove spiderwebs from beneath his trailer using a propane torch, but ended up setting his home on fire. KVOA-TV reported that the unnamed man’s elderly mother, who also lived there, suffered minor injuries while being carried out of the mobile home with the help of neighbors.

Flight Risk

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport made an unusual discovery in the luggage of a traveler arriving from Vietnam in October: 54 illegal bird nests. The nests, which are considered a delicacy in some countries, are built out of solidified bird saliva and are used to make soup and broth, reported UPI. However, they are

banned from entering the United States because they may carry infectious diseases. The nests were destroyed.

“Without a word to anyone, not even family, I packed up and left. . . I went missing for 10 years,” Applegate said. “I enjoyed my life,” he wrote in a blog on the Emmaus Greenwich website, but says he’s grateful to the charity for encouraging him to reconnect with his sister. As for his wife, there has been no reaction from her to Applegate’s reappearance.

The Daily World in Centralia, Wash., reported that Rachel A. Deckert, 27, tried to turn herself in at the Lewis County Jail on an outstanding DUI warrant on Aug. 21, but was turned away because she brought along her partner — literally glued to Deckert by her pinky finger. When Deckert tried again the next day, still attached to her partner, police and firefighters were called. The two women were attached by a copper elbow pipe into which they had each inserted a pinky finger secured with “some kind of epoxy,” a firefighter said.

They told authorities they had been that way about a week at the suggestion of a couples therapy counselor. “They haven’t been able to feel their fingers for three days,” said police detective Patty Finch.

Efforts to separate the women were unsuccessful, and Deckert was released with advice to seek medical attention.

An unnamed Colorado woman apparently defied death when a train rolled over her near Whitewater, Colo., on Oct. 15.

The woman was sleeping on the tracks and wearing earphones when one engine rolled completely over her before the train could stop. She was then removed from the tracks and refused medical attention.

Lands End Fire Protection District chief Brian Lurvey told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel he was not sure whether she had been cited by Union Pacific for sleeping on the tracks.

Samantha the intelligent sex doll suffered a number of indignities at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, in early September. Sergi Santos of Barcelona, Spain, who developed Samantha, said men at the show acted “like barbarians. Two fingers were broken. She was heavily soiled.” Samantha, who talks, is also programmed to react when someone touches her. Santos told Metro News that Samantha would have to undergo repairs and cleaning, but she “can endure a lot.

Metro News also reports that women in Middlesbrough, Cleveland, England, have contacted police about a mysterious man handing out provocative notes in the streets. The notes begin: “No offence intended. You are simply a female that caught my eye. I am looking for a possible private arrangement. If you understand my meaning.” The man has handed out several of the notes, one to a 14-yearold girl at Middlesbrough Bus Station.

Her sister called the phone number at the bottom of the note and said the voice “sounded foreign.” She went on: “It made me feel a bit uncomfortable and it set off my anxiety.”

Railing Against Using The Adirondacks As A Junkyard

T

he Adirondack Park is one of New York state’s greatest assets and most precious gems. The large area of wilderness provides both a protected habitat for wildlife and a place for recreational tourism for the rest of us.

It is not meant to be a junkyard. However, Iowa Pacific Holdings, LLC, seems determined to make it one.

The Chicago-based subsidiary of the giant real estate company Berkshire Hathaway has been allowing one of its clients, Union Tank Car Co., to store dozens of unused oil train cars on railroad tracks in the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

Several years ago, Iowa Pacific purchased 30 miles of track between North Creek, in Warren County, and Tahawus, in Essex County, with the intention to start freight service there. Those plans never came to fruition, so the company has been seeking to make money by leasing the tracks to store idle railcars.

According to the Adirondack Council, a continuous wall of rusty railcars, like the ones from Union Tank Car, creates a barrier to wildlife, threatens the region’s water quality, creates an eyesore in an otherwise pure landscape and damages the state’s efforts to promote the region as a wilderness recreation area.

New York has spent tens of millions of dollars over the past 20 years acquiring new forest preserve in the portion of the Adirondacks where these cars lie.

As part of his 2018 State of the State initiatives, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Dec. 19 his intention to take legal action to stop the mothballing of railcars. His determination paid off: On Dec. 26, Union Tank Car announced it would remove its 65 tank cars from the Adirondacks. The company’s general manager said he regretted the decision to store them there, and that it won’t happen again. Those cars are expected to be removed by mid-January.

Cuomo took a victory lap for that decision, as he should. It’s a crucial win for him, the park and all residents of New York.

But we shouldn’t celebrate just yet. The day after Union Tank Car announced it would pull its cars out, Iowa Pacific informed state officials that it still has other clients looking for someplace to store oil cars. The company’s lawyer wrote in a letter to the Department of Environmental Conservation that Iowa Pacific plans to bring “hundreds” of additional cars for storage to the region — perhaps up to 2,500 58-foot-long railcars. That would create a 22-milelong scrapyard through the wilderness.

That’s something we cannot allow. The same state

officials who spent months pressuring Union Tank Car to pull out need to continue to be vigilant for possible future companies who believe the Adirondacks is a suitable location for rusty, greasy and broken-down train parts.

Cuomo and his administration should continue seeking a cease-and-desist order on future storage of railcars on that section of track. The DEC should continue to seek a “petition for waivers and exemptions” from the Federal Surface Transportation Board, which would support the state’s effort to classify the rail line used

by Iowa Pacific as “abandoned.”

Right now, Iowa Pacific is able to claim its car-dumping as a legitimate working railroad operation. And that’s just not right.

State officials should also press for new federal regulations to protect environmentally sensitive areas like the Adirondacks and other places from these types of harmful activities.

There is one other option. Iowa Pacific claimed it would only cease tanker storage if New York purchases the company’s freight easement on the line, which would cost millions. But we’ve already spent millions acquiring the land where these railcars are to make it “forever wild.” It would be a waste if we spent that kind of money just for it to end up being a forever trash heap. So buying the land from the railroad shouldn’t be ruled out.

We’re lucky to live in a state that hosts both the nation’s most populous city and the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States, less than 200 miles apart from each other. We cannot afford to take the latter for granted.

We must do what we can to ensure the Adirondack Park remains as wonderful and wild a place as it always has been.

Iowa Pacific clearly doesn’t see that as a priority, so we must keep it one. SNT

SQUARE DEALS FOR ROCK CLIMBING AND EASY LOUNGING

Central Rock Gym

Climbing enthusiasts may have a new mecca at downtown’s Franklin Square. Central Rock Gym, featuring more than 16,000 square feet of climbing space, is the largest climbing facility north of New York City.

Unlike some gyms where a rock wall is considered a bonus, it’s the main attraction at Central Rock. The gym walls are covered with colored grips. On the first floor is a bouldering island and wall, with spaces about 10- to 16-feet high where climbers move about freely without a rope. There are 25-foot walls for top-rope climbing, where people work in pairs — one as the climber and the other as the belayer — to climb the wall one at a time. The second-floor mezzanine has 45-foot-high rock walls for lead climbing.

There has been much interest in Central Rock since its Dec. 23 opening, according to general manager Joe Gehm and climbing manager Nate Farrington. The facility has notched more than 200 customers on certain days, including a group that regularly drives in from Rochester.

The managers also voiced their excitement about being in the city, especially the scenic yet underutilized Franklin Square area.

“Syracuse is a very active community,” Gehm said, and having another indoor option for fitness during Central New York’s often harsh winter could be a draw for people across the state.

Central Rock has eight locations nationwide. The Syracuse venue is the first in New York state, with the company planning to open a smaller facility in Manhattan this spring.

The building at 600 N. Franklin St. was once a meat packing factory in the 1800s. Gymgoers can see old grayscale and sepia-toned photos of the factory along the hallway between Central Rock’s main climbing space and its weight room and yoga studio. The business currently has two yoga instructors.

Central Rock caters to all experience levels and ages. Farrington has a wealth of climbing experience at other facilities; he has helped toddlers learn to climb and once belayed for a climber in her 90s.

The walls are color-coded and have numeral rankings on them, but Farrington said that shouldn’t necessarily deter people. “I’d never want someone to look at a grade and think, ‘That’s above me,’” he said.

Central Rock has pricing for day use and membership packages. It also hosts birthday parties and group team building events.

Martija Popovic isn’t new to the bar scene: He worked as a bouncer and doorman while in college to make extra money. But Orbis Lounge, his new bar in downtown’s Hanover Square, is his first foray into business ownership.

Popovic admitted he was impulsive when he decided to open the bar. But after previous tenant World Lounge and Martini Bar closed last summer, he said opening a new place in the same location just made sense.

Customers familiar with World will see homages to the original sprinkled throughout Orbis. World map motifs dot the inside of the bar, on throw pillows and as a large light display. Popovic said he wanted to promote the sense of international inclusivity that the owners of World originally envisioned.

Yet there are new flourishes, too. Deep, electric-blue accent lighting under the bar and on the liquor shelves adds modern-looking visuals to Orbis.

It took about five months for Popovic to get the business up and running in time for its Dec. 15 debut. Some behindthe-scenes work had to be done, such as getting and installing the repurposed wood that now lines the bottom of the walls and bar.

The lounge and bar has 20 draft beers, more than a dozen wines and a wide selection of liquors. A custom cocktail menu includes four different types of mules featuring ginger beer and citrus juice.

Popovic noted Hanover Square’s calmer

atmosphere, especially when compared to bustling Armory Square, which tends to attract a louder, younger crowd. Orbis Lounge, with its mix of nightlife identities (it can easily transform from a lounge space to a dance hall), was meant to be a relaxed place.

Yet Popovic said he will still bring in live deejays for more traditional dance parties whenever the mood strikes him.

“It’ll be something I’ll always be working on,” Popovic said about the ongoing Orbis aesthetic.

Orbis Lounge, 134 E. Genesee St., is open Mondays through Wednesdays, 4:30 p.m. to midnight; and Thursdays through Saturdays, 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Center of Grace

Renee McLain said she felt like she had been destined to open a wellness center for most of her life. She suffered from juvenile arthritis and thyroid cancer, and credits nontraditional medicine for her recovery.

In 2015 when she was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, a disease that caused inflamed tissue to grow on her lungs and heart, she was faced with heart surgery.

“I just kept thinking, ‘I want to live, I want to live, I want to live,’” she recalled.

“I heard that voice in my head say, ‘Well, then do what you came here to do.’”

McLain had been teaching wellness practices and therapy work through word-of-mouth for more than 20 years. In mid-November, two years after the surgery, she opened Center of Grace along Market Place in Manlius, off Enders Road.

With Crouse Hospital’s Manlius extension and the Synergy Center both near Center of Grace, a blending of medical care and natural healing options now exists in one area, McLain said. She hopes people will find their way to Center of Grace, whether they’re seeking aid to overcome previous trauma, chronic pain or illness, or just want a fun stress reliever.

“An emotion gets suppressed in the body and festers and turns into disease,” she said. She has met people who never had luck with traditional medicines, but felt better after a few sessions of natural wellness practices that paid attention to their body’s inner needs. These practices can help people overcome the negative energies or emotional blocks stopping them from living fulfilling lives, McLain said.

There is also wellness and life coaching, counseling and psychotherapy. McLain also wants to open a small café inside to promote nutrition. “I tried to cover all the bases to support people in their wholeness,” she said.

McLain intends to create talking circles for teens and children so younger generations can cope with their own emotions, which could help lower rates of depression and suicide. She also said she’d love to take her teachings to the local jail population.

KICKSTART A HEALTHY NEW YEAR WITH CULINARY CLEANSES

W

inters in Central New York seem to linger endlessly. Days are short, nights are long and the gray, dreary clouds work overtime. The season takes a toll on body and mind, but it can also be a time for restoration.

“Cleansing with the change of the seasons and eating seasonally are invaluable to our health,” said Natalia Mordwinkin, owner of Bare Bones Health & Wellness. “We help our body make the shift into fall and winter, and then into spring and summer.”

Cleanses are nothing new, but what makes Mordwinkin’s approach unique is her focus on not only purity of body and mind, but uplifting the spirit and appealing to the palate.

To this end she recently partnered with her longtime friend, chef Yann Guigne, to add an element of haute cuisine.

Born and raised in France, Guigne trained as a chef in Paris, eventually making his way to Syracuse, where he co-founded L’Adour Restaurant Francais. He is currently the executive chef at DeWitt’s Scotch ’N Sirloin.

Guigne offers a food preparation class in conjunction with Mordwinkin’s cleansing

program. “I asked him to help me out because I wanted someone experienced, so people could see it’s easy to prepare healthy meals,” Mordwinkin explained.

Mordwinkin’s cleanse is not a traditional detox, but rather replaces dairy and wheat with whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits and protein. Each cleanse is customized to the individual clients, taking into account factors such as medical history, allergies and goals. Her concierge-style service even extends to accompanying clients to the grocery store and helping them select items that fit the bill, but are reasonably priced and readily available.

Describing her commitment to clients, Mordwinkin said, “I can’t do it any other way.

I’m the one they have entrusted (with their health). So I have to be there for them.”

In addition to her dedication, Mordwinkin

brings significant qualifications to the table.

Prior to launching her current business, she worked for more than 20 years as a traditional retail pharmacist. It was her own health struggles and ventures into supplemental holistic treatments that led Mordwinkin to seek more knowledge, take accredited courses in natural healing, and earn a certification as a First Line Therapy practitioner through Metagenics Inc. Her blend of traditional and holistic practice allows her to offer her clientele a well-rounded regimen of individualized cleansings to promote wellness and fight disease.

As a condition of their partnership, Mordwinkin insisted Guigne try the cleanse himself. Guigne immediately accepted the challenge, but knew it wouldn’t be easy.

Shopping at a farmer’s market is a good place to begin a cleansing diet.

“little picnic” comprised of bread, cheese and wine. “I’m French!” he exclaimed.

“During this cleanse? No, I couldn’t touch that!”

During the cleanse, he substituted his picnics with salads and fish with onions, lemon and herbs. He was pleasantly surprised from a culinary perspective. “It was very, very good,” he admitted. “Doing the cleanse was fun and can bring you back mentally and physically in better shape.”

Mordwinkin and Guigne have always been on the same page when it comes to eating seasonally with locally and organically grown foods. Guigne shops at the farmer’s market every weekend for his ingredients because it’s second nature, “the way I grew up,” he said. But when it came to cooking, Guigne found he learned a lot by stepping outside his normal French culinary routine.

“I’d ask him about coconut oil or something else and he’d say, ‘Eh,’ but to help me in preparing the meals that were suitable for the cleanse, he had to,” Mordwinkin said.

When Guigne makes the meals for the food prep class associated with the

cleanse, he keeps them basic, using spices like salt and pepper and fresh herbs like rosemary, parsley and thyme. “He allows the food to speak for itself,” said Mordwinkin.

She wants to dispel the myths that eating during a cleansing means gnawing on cardboard, chewing rabbit food, or going hungry. “You walk away satisfied (and) happy, your body’s fed and it’s simple enough you can do this every single day.”

Mordwinkin recommends individuals participate in these 10-day cleanses twice a year to rid their bodies of toxins accumulated through eating unhealthy foods, breathing environmental pollutants and dealing with everyday stressors.

Kickstarting healthier habits is really what a cleanse is all about. “When you’ve raised the bar of feeling better, you won’t want to go back to where you once were,” she said. “You have a taste of what it’s like to feel good, and the way you’re feeling is because of what you did to feel that way.”

Joe Medwick. Memphis to Montreal (Monkey Butt Music).

With musicians like Albert Lee (Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton) and Garth Hudson (The Band) on the disc, it’s hard to imagine Joe Medwick’s new CD falling flat. True to form, the long list of all-star players lives up to the album’s collective name, creating a disc that’s soulful, funky and brimming with catchy tunes.

Medwick gathered the performers, wrote some of the tracks (proving his talent as a songwriter) and selected the covers, as he successfully creates a playlist that serves as a fantastic sonic journey.

“Sweet Soul Music” rips the album open with punching guitar that dips right into a comfortable groove. “Find My Way Back Home” is like a step back in time to music that relies on the players, singers and quality of the song to draw out the emotions of the tune, not cheap effects.

Covers on the disc are top-shelf, coming from artists including Bob Dylan, James Taylor and Dan Penn, and the contributors rank pretty high themselves. Gary Mallaber (Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen), Jennifer Condos (Ray LaMontagne, Boz Scaggs), Joel Savoy (T-Bone Burnett) and others bring the songs to life in ways that only true professionals can.

Although Medwick is a drummer, he’s not listed in the credits as a contributor to the disc’s actual sound. His connection to the artists is also left unexplained, but the result is still powerful. The album is a stunning collection of tunes for music lovers who miss songs that sound like fingers on a fretboard and a voice with human qualities, not pedals and auto-tune.

Memphis to Montreal is a beautiful tribute to songwriters and musicians of

Undergang is back with another sixsong EP of tracks that undeniably belong to them. Chock-full of their personality in lyrical content, delivery and musical vibe, their sound is one that’s beyond imitation.

Al Smead is a force on vocals, with John Thomas on bass and vocals, Nathan Angell on guitar and vocals, Jim Drago on guitar and Illin on drums all behind him.

The going gets tougher as Coach Jim Boeheim’s SU team burrows deep into the ACC basketball season

By Matt Michael ne of the reasons so many people follow Syracuse University men’s basketball is that the season helps us mark the time through our long, dreadful winters.

Two more games this week, and we’re at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. One more game the next week, and we’re near the end of January. Two more games the following week, and we’re almost into the shortest month of the year. And so on.

Before you know it, it’s March, the Orange is playing in postseason tournaments, and 32 degrees no longer feels like a heat wave.

So as we finally emerge from this brutal stretch of sub-zero temperatures, let’s look at what you should know as the Orange carries us through the next two months to the start of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament March 6.

In or Out?

As always, the biggest question surrounding SU is this: Will the Orange make the NCAA Tournament? Before the Tuesday, Jan. 9, game at No. 3 Virginia, Syracuse was 12-4 (1-2 in the ACC) with a few nice wins (Buffalo, Maryland) and without any of the really bad losses that kept the team out of the NCAA Tournament last year.

Before losing 51-49 to Notre Dame Jan. 6 at the Carrier Dome, the Orange was ranked No. 31 in the RPI (Rating Percentage Index), which remains an important tool in the NCAA Tournament selection process. And because Syracuse plays in the rugged

ACC, the Orange will have plenty of chances to record a signature win or two against top-40 RPI teams Duke (No. 1), Virginia (No. 2), Clemson (No. 5), North Carolina (No. 8), Miami (No. 22), Florida State (No. 27) and Louisville (No. 32).

With 14 conference games remaining, here are three reasons why the Orange will make the NCAA Tournament. And three reasons why it won’t.

Why SU Will Make the Tournament

The Defense. Clearly, this year’s team is not an offensive juggernaut. But it plays Coach Jim Boeheim’s vaunted 2-3 zone defense about as well as any SU team has played it. Entering this week’s games, the Orange ranked third in the ACC and 20th in the nation in points allowed (62.2 per game) and fourth in the ACC and 19th in the country in field-goal percentage defense (.381).

“We’ve just got to move (on defense), we have to continuously move, get to your spots,” SU guard Tyus Battle said.

“There’s going to be some breakdowns.

That happens. But if you keep running them off the (3-point) line and making it hard for them, we’ll win on that side of the floor.”

The Big Three. Syracuse’s “Big Three” of Battle (19.5 points per game entering this week), point guard Frank Howard (15.4) and forward Oshae Brissett (15.2, plus 9.8 rebounds per game) will continue to play at a high level and offset the Orange’s offensive deficiencies.

Brissett has been a real find, as he’s looking to become the first SU player since Rick Jackson in 2010-2011 and the first Orange freshman since Carmelo Anthony in 2002-2003 to average a double-double.

“I think he’s a very good prospect,” Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams said of Brissett. “The freshmen that play the minutes at the rate that he’s playing at Syracuse, normally they have really good careers while at Syracuse and thereafter.”

Easy Baskets. The best way to offset the offensive woes is with easy baskets in transition. To that end, the Orange entered this week ranked first in the ACC in steals (8.4 per game) and second in blocked shots (6.44 per game), and both often lead to easy baskets.

Why SU Won’t Make the Tournament

Not Enough Offense. Battle, Howard and Brissett account for more than 70 percent of Syracuse’s offense. When one or two get shut down or have an off night, the Orange is in deep trouble because no other player has been able to consistently make up the difference.

Continued from page 13 “We just cannot score. It’s been a struggle, and it’s probably going to continue to be a struggle for us to score points,” Boeheim said after the Notre Dame game.

“When you can’t score 50 points at home, you’ve got a problem.”

Lack of Depth. This isn’t to beat the dead horse about whether Boeheim should play more than six or seven players, because he has only eight scholarship players anyway. This is about Battle, Howard and Brissett playing every minute of every conference game and what kind of toll that will eventually take on them. Having backup center Bourama Sidibe return from his nagging injuries will help ease the load for starting center Paschal Chukwu, but overall the bench does not offer much help beyond freshman forward Marek Dolezaj.

Rebounding. This wasn’t an issue until recently, and in fact the Orange entered the week with the third-best rebounding margin (+7.8 per game) in the ACC. But Syracuse was out-rebounded by Wake Forest 38-29 and Notre Dame 42-27 in back-to-back losses.

“We’re not a good rebounding team. That was a myth.

A complete myth,” Boeheim said after the Notre Dame game. “Nobody’s really gone to the boards except for the last two games and when they did, we cannot rebound down there.”

The ACC Schedule

Following its two-game road trip to No. 3 Virginia and No. 23 Florida State this Saturday, Jan. 13, the Orange will play a four-game stretch against some of the ACC’s weaker teams (Pittsburgh twice, Boston College and Georgia Tech). That will provide an opportunity to pick

up some needed wins because after those four games, the Orange will play six of the its final nine league games against the ACC’s strongest teams: Virginia, Louisville, No. 18 Miami, No. 20 North Carolina, No. 7 Duke and No. 19 Clemson.

You never know how everything will shake out, but if the Orange can finish 9-9 in the ACC and 20-11 overall in the regular season, that should be enough to get SU into the NCAA Tournament.

The Past

At halftime of the March 3 game against Clemson, the Orange will retire Lawrence Moten’s jersey No. 21, as he will join 13 other Syracuse players who have had their jerseys retired. Syracuse retired Dennis DuVal’s jersey No. 22 during the Jan. 6 Notre Dame contest.

Moten remains the most prolific scorer in Orange history: He tallied 2,334 points in 121 games from 19911995 and he’s also the all-time leading scorer in Big East Conference history.

And in case you missed it, Syracuse is honoring former administrative assistant Kelly Seubert by having the players wear a patch with a heart above the letter “K” for the remainder of the season. Seubert, who was on Boeheim’s staff for 13 years, died in August after losing her battle with cancer.

The Future

While it’s likely that Battle will head to the NBA and Brissett is putting himself in position to join him, the future looks bright for the Orange with Darius Bazley headlining next year’s incoming class. Bazley is a 6-8 forward from Princeton High School in Cincinnati who is ranked No. 9 in the 2018 recruiting class.

He’ll be joined by 6-3 point guard Jalen Carey, a fourstar prospect who’s playing at Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, N.J., and 6-5 shooting guard Buddy Boeheim, who’s attending Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. Buddy, of course, is the son of Jim Boeheim.

The Lowdown

This year’s team has endeared itself to fans because of the way the players have hustled on defense, scrapped for loose balls and exceeded expectations. The losses in winnable games against Wake Forest and Notre Dame seemed to set the team back, however, and Howard said they need to rediscover their mojo because they’re going to lose without it.

“I think we got comfortable and you can see that in our play,” Howard said after the Notre Dame game. “We’re not going after the ball anymore, we don’t have that chip on our shoulder.

“You’ve got to have that mentality and you’ve got to feel a certain type of way about things. You can’t go out there and float, you know what I mean?” Howard added.

“We’re not being as active any more, our skills are down, our rebounds are down and we’re going to lose like that.”
