Auburn, Mass., police received a number of calls over the weekend of Sept.

15-17 about a wayward goat, but it wasn’t until the wee hours of Monday, Sept.

18, that No. 448 was finally corralled at the La Quinta Inn in Auburn, reported CBS Boston. The “mischievous runaway farm animal” was seen on surveillance video entering the lobby of the hotel and wandering the halls, “presumably to rest a bit,” said police. Peter Blash, No. 448’s owner, said the goat jumped a 5-foot-high fence and “took off like a criminal.” However, Blash said, “I had one that made it all the way to Sturbridge.”

Milky Way

Entrepreneur Miki Argawal, 38, of Brooklyn was a hit at the 2017 Burning Man gathering in Nevada, where she pumped breast milk and offered it to fellow attendees to help with hangovers or use in lattes. She even tried some herself, saying it tasted a bit like coconut milk.

She estimated that 30 to 40 people tried her milk. “The fact that any part of that could be seen as taboo. . . it’s time that conversation changes,” Argawal said.

Cashing Out

Prosecutors in Geneva, Switzerland, are looking for the culprits who flushed about $100,000 in 500-euro notes down four toilets in the city in May — one in the vault area of the UBS Bank, and the other three in nearby bistros. While neither throwing money away nor blocking a toilet is a crime, Vincent Derouand of the Geneva Prosecutor’s Office told the Tribune de Geneve, “We want to be sure of the origin of the money.” The cash was confiscated during the investigation, but Derouand said there was no immediate reason to think it was dirty money.

Irony Defined

Samantha Faye Toope, 20, and Kelsie Laine Marie Mast, 23, inmates of the Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) Institution for Women, must have been pumped up about their successful escape from the prison on Oct. 2, so they headed to a downtown “escape room” — a problem-solving and strategy game room where players are given limited time to find their way out. SideQuests Adventures owner Rebecca Liaw told CBC News that the women arrived at the business on Oct. 3 and inquired about the game. As Liaw explained how it works, five uniformed police officers arrived and handcuffed the cons, both of whom Edmonton police described as violent offenders with weapons offenses. “We get lots of interesting visitors,” Liaw said, “but this is definitely top of the list.”

Life Imitates Cartoons

The Fremont (California) Police Department responded late on Sept. 17 to a Safeway store where 39-year-old Adam Kowarsh, armed with a French baguette, was on a rampage. According to SFGate, workers told Kowarsh he needed to pay for his items and leave the store, but when

one employee tried to calm him, Kowarsh responded by pushing him and then hitting him across the face with the baguette.

No Pain, No Gain

Archaeologists in Cambridgeshire, England, have discovered the remains of a nearly 200-year-old colony of utopians espousing “free love and wife-swapping,” according to Metro News. The Manea Fen community, established in 1838 by Methodist minister William Hodson, who championed a community free from marriage, money or monogamy, once numbered 150 members, but lasted only 25 months before succumbing to “personality clashes and objections to the practice of free love.” Lead researcher Dr. Marcus Brittain believes “they got the wrong people, they had no labor skills and put in no time and effort, they were drunk, they went into local brothels, and thought they could build a utopia without breaking a sweat.”

Lost and Found

South Western Railway in England took over for South West Trains in August and in its first six weeks collected more than

10,000 items left behind on trains, including an inflatable shark, an ironing board, a barrister’s wig, false teeth, a leather chair and hundreds of jackets. The BBC reported that lost property manager Michael Pugh is beseeching riders to check their seats before leaving the train. While his staff works hard “to ensure passengers are reunited with their belongings,” Pugh said, items can be kept for only three months.

People With Issues

Timothy Bates, 37, of Collierville, Tenn., was arrested on Sept. 24 by the Secret Service after being observed urinating at the corner of 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the White House in Washington, D.C. WTOP-FM reported that Bates explained to the officers that he was headed to the White House, where he hoped to meet with National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers and Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis to find out “how to get the dog chip out of my head.” He explained that he is part of the MK Ultra project, managed by the CIA, and had chips implanted in his head that cause headaches, shaking and convulsions. Bates also told officers he had weapons in his car, which amounted to nine firearms, brass knuckles, a black

As Hurricane Irma bore down on Florida in early September, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office announced that registered sex offenders, who would not be able to shelter with other citizens, “need someplace to go just like any other citizen.” The Tampa Bay Times reported that sex offenders were directed to Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel. Pasco County Sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Doll noted that offenders found in other shelters where children were present were subject to arrest, but said the predator shelter would welcome offenders from other counties.

In nearby Polk County, officials were not so generous, telling sex offenders, “If you are a predator, find somewhere else to go,” and announcing that they would be checking IDs at the door and arresting anyone with an outstanding warrant.

Blame Game

Lisa Faye Stout, 53, came up with an unusual scapegoat for the mess police officers found in her room on Sept. 10 at New Castle, Ind.’s Raintree Inn, according to the Muncie Star Press. Vampires had “destroyed everything,” Stout told the officers, who were responding to reports that she had shown up in the hotel bar wearing no pants or undergarments. The front desk clerk also said Stout spit on her and threatened to kill her. As she was taken into custody, Stout spit some more and threatened to “slice” officers’ throats.

Stout was charged in Henry County court with two counts of battery by bodily waste, intimidation and criminal mischief.

Recalculating

Gabriel Bishop of Sellersville, Pa., put all his faith in his car’s GPS system on the evening of Sept. 9, even as it directed him to follow a bike path running alongside

the Lehigh River in Easton. According to Lehighvalleylive.com, when the path led under a low bridge, Bishop realized his mistake and tried to back up, but ended up rolling his car into the river. Easton police reported that Bishop was uninjured, but he did receive citations for multiple traffic offenses.

Smooth Reactions

A movie stuntman in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, put his skills to work when a potential buyer of his Mercedes Benz tried to take off with the car on Sept. 13. The Telegraph reported that Matt Spooner met the “buyer” and gave a test drive in the car, but the thief wouldn’t get out and started to take off.

So, Spooner told reporters, “I ran round to the front and asked him politely to step out. I then ended up on the front of the vehicle and it began to move.” The driver entered a highway, but when he finally slowed down, Spooner let go and “skidded off to the side of the curb,” suffering cuts and bruises to his face. While Spooner creates stunts for film crews, he advises, “It’s a bad plan to do them yourself.”

Just north of Benton, Kansas, a rancher posted signs promising a reward to anyone who could help him find his missing longhorn cow, Mercedes. The Wichita Eagle reported the 3-year-old black-andwhite bovine went missing on Sept. 11 during Cross Trails, a weekly cowboy church service at Greg Johnson’s Prairie Rose Ranch. Friends, neighbors and family have searched high and low for Mercedes, recognizable by her 5-footwide horns, but the only sighting of her has been near the El Dorado, Kansas, Walmart, about 10 miles away. Johnson says this isn’t the first time she’s run off: “She is more of a loner.”

Oops!

The Caving Club at Indiana University explored Sullivan Cave in southern Indiana on Sept. 17, but when they headed back to campus, they forgot one thing: a 19-year-old freshman physics major who had become separated from the group and was trapped behind a locked gate. When the club president realized two days later

that a caver had been left behind, members rushed back to save him. “You could tell they were pretty shaken up,” the caver told the Indiana Daily Student. “They did near kill me.” The student reported he licked moisture off the cave walls during the ordeal and wrote goodbye letters to his family on his iPhone until the battery died. (Bonus: The rescued caver’s name is Lukas Cavar.)

Apocalypse Later

Cable television viewers in Orange County, Calif., were stunned on the morning of Sept. 21 when an ominous message accompanied by an “Emergency Alert” banner flashed on the screen. At increased volume, a man’s voice boomed: “Realize this, extremely violent times will come,” said viewer Stacy Laflamme of Lake Forest, who was watching HGTV on the Cox Communications cable system.

Spectrum customers also received the alert. The warning seemed especially timely given that doomsday writer David Meade had predicted the end of the world “as we know it” to occur two days later.

Laflamme told the Orange County Reg-

ister the message “sounded like a radio broadcast coming through the television.” Dennis Johnson, a spokesman for Spectrum, said: “We have confirmed that we were fed an incorrect audio file,” but neither company could determine where the audio had come from.

High Times

Police in Cumbria County, England, responded on Sept. 23 to a call for help from 3,210-foot Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, where four men ran into trouble while hiking. However, their problems didn’t stem from dehydration or a painful fall. Instead, it seems the group had become “incapable of walking due to cannabis use,” police told The Guardian.

A police spokesperson wrote on Facebook: “Now having to deploy rescue, air support and ambulance to rescue them.

Words fail us.” Cumbria police superintendent Justin Bibby reminded hikers that “alcohol or any other substance that could impair your judgment has no place on a mountain.”

TRUMP’S DRILL DREAM WILL SHAFT U.S. CONTINENTAL SHELF

W

ithin the same week, two significantly different proposals for new offshore energy production were unveiled by two different governments in two different cities by two different leaders who hold two vastly different opinions on the industry’s future.

In his 2018 State of the State address on Jan. 3, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo formally announced his plan to seek 800 megawatts of new offshore wind projects in 2018 and 2019, enough wind

power to generate electricity for 400,000 households.

This comes nearly a year after the governor announced that a Norway-based company is planning to build an offshore

wind farm 30 miles off the Long Island coast that could produce 1,000 megawatts of wind power by 2024.

It also comes three years after Cuomo officially banned the controversial energy production method of hydrofracking in New York state, a turning point that has moved the state further away from fossil fuel burning and more toward green energy alternatives. In 2015, Cuomo proposed to make renewable energy generate half of the state’s power by 2030 — and using the state’s Atlantic coastline to generate wind power is a part of that proposition.

The wind energy proposal in the Jan. 3 address would account for one-third of the governor’s goal of obtaining 2.4 gigawatts of offshore wind-generated energy by 2030.

The day after Cuomo’s State of the State address, the Trump administration released an energy proposal that starkly contrasts with the governor’s plan. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke released a draft plan that would open almost all U.S. coastal waters to offshore oil and gas drilling from 2019 to 2024.

That would help bring about President Trump’s dream of significantly expanding oil and gas exploration and drilling in the nation’s outer continental shelf — something that hasn’t been done on the Pacific coast since the 1980s and hasn’t ever been done on the Atlantic coast.

There are several reasons for that. The devastating explosion at Deep Water Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico is just eight years in our rearview mirror. The largest oil spill in the nation’s history resulted in an industrial disaster that killed 11 people, ravaged the gulf’s aquatic animal population and cost Louisiana and its neighboring states hundreds of millions of dollars in their fishing and tourism markets.

Imagine if something like that happened near the Maine coastline, or Cape Cod, the New Jersey shore, Long Island, or the North Carolina Outer Banks. Pristine water and beaches are imperative to these states’ environments and economies.

As if the chance of a serious accident is not already enough of a danger, the offshore drilling draft plan actually comes on the heels of the Trump administration’s proposal to roll back safety regulations that were put in place as a result of the 2010 oil spill.

Even if a similar accident never occurred, such an increase in industrialization — some that could be as close as three miles from shore — would by itself negatively affect nearby ecosystems and tourism forever.

The officials and citizens of East Coast states have made it clear that they don’t want oil and gas drilling in their waters.

They spent a whole year fighting the same proposal, albeit on a much smaller scale, from the Obama administration. In 2015, Obama’s Interior Department also proposed a plan for the government to sell leases for oil and gas development in Atlantic waters. It was harshly criticized by residents up and down the coast and was successfully fought off.

To contrast all of this, offshore wind farms like the ones proposed by Cuomo would have little or no negative impact on tourism. They would not come with the risk of dumping harmful chemicals into the ocean. They would be much healthier for the environment, they would cost less than oil and gas drilling and they would provide jobs in an ever-growing industry.

It’s also popular. According to July 2016 data from the Nature Conservancy, 89 percent of New York state residents support using more wind power.

Not surprisingly, Cuomo is also not interested in offshore drilling just off Long Island. He sent a letter last week to Secretary Zinke asking for New York to be exempt from the plan, saying that it “introduces the unprecedented risk of extremely hazardous oil spills, contributes to the acceleration of climate change, and conflicts with New York’s ambitious agenda to develop offshore wind energy.”

That leaves us with two distinct paths between the state and federal government of how to take what’s just off our coast and use it to power our homes and businesses. That means there is a right and wrong way to go about this. And the right way is not a tough choice.

New York should do what is necessary to prevent offshore drilling anywhere near our shoreline. It should also lead by example and show what terrific benefits come from wind energy, as well as other clean energy fuels.

We can show the federal government, as well as other states, how to propel our energy structure into the 21st century by using what flows on top of the ocean as a power source instead of what flows underneath it. SNT

FAMOUS ARTISTS MOVES TO SALINA STREET

F

amous Artists, the company founded by the late showman Murray Bernthal that has brought Broadway-caliber productions to Central New York for more than 60 years, has moved its business from West Fayette Street to a new corner office at 374 S. Salina St. The location is just a storefront away from the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St., where the Famous Artists Broadway Theater Series presented last fall’s production of the Disney musical The Lion King. Splashy posters for upcoming shows fill the office’s windows on West Jefferson Street.

Famous Artists president Albert Nocciolino was on hand along with Alan Naples, senior vice president at M&T Bank (the title sponsor for the series), and Downtown Committee executive director Merike Treier to help supervise the ribbon cutting for the office’s Jan. 17 opening.

Nocciolino noted the monetary benefits of The Lion King’s successful engagement, as personnel spent six weeks in town to set up the mega-musical for its three-week run. Factoring hotel stays, dining and other necessities for the cast and crew, the result added up to more

than $16 million in economic impact for downtown merchants.

Famous Artists’ move also places its office in the center of a busy artsy area.

With the Landmark next door and the soon-to-open Redhouse @ City Center complex across the street, plus the Mulroy Civic Center a few blocks away, there is ample reason to believe that the arts could be a catalyst for urban growth.

There is also a touch of sentiment regarding the office’s new location, a spot that 30-plus years earlier was filled

by a Thom McAn shoe store. Bernthal’s late wife Rose was an executive director at the Landmark around that time; the Bernthals were instrumental in preserving the former Loew’s State movie house’s heritage after it was spared a date with the wrecker’s ball.

“Notch” was the nickname that Murray Bernthal used for Nocciolino around the Famous Artists office. Nocciolino also fondly recalled the first show he saw on Broadway: “It was Golden Boy (1964).

We went on a CYO trip to see it. And

Sammy Davis Jr. received a Tony Award nomination!” CYO theater trips seemed to be a lot hipper in those days.

FRANTIC FARCE FLIES FRIENDLY SKIES

E

ver since Central New York Playhouse moved into Shoppingtown Mall five years ago, it has launched every January with a madcap farce. Kind of a firecracker of hilarity against the darkness, frost and gloom. Some shows, such as last year’s One Man, Two Guvnors featuring Josh Mele, emerge as the strongest offerings of the year.

This year there’s nothing chancy about Boeing, Boeing (through Saturday, Jan. 27), the most reliable of all French bedroom farces. What’s different this time are all the new faces, including director Noelle Hedgcock and four female cast members.

Most audiences enter Boeing, Boeing with a pretty good idea of what’s coming: slamming doors, mistaken identities, split-second timing and the constant threat of exposure and humiliation. A Frenchman with an Italian name, playwright Marc Camoletti premiered his show in 1960, when the dial telephone was state-of the-art communication. It ran for 19 years. Englishmen Beverly Cross (husband of Maggie Smith) and Francis Smith launched the English version in London, which ran for 17 years.

Although it has never been neglected, Boeing, Boeing entered into its current popularity about 10 years ago, when multitalented actor Mark Rylance implicitly argued that the role of the protagonist’s

friend Robert is one of the most dazzling to be found in the entire stage repertory.

Jet-set lothario Bernard (Derek Potocki) has worked out a scheme in which he spends nights of pleasure with different international flight attendants, then called “stewardesses.” In a small black book he keeps track of their comings and goings, which he checks against a thick record of all flights (a suspiciously 19th-century-looking tome). Against what we know about the predictability of flight arrivals today, Bernard assumes he can work his sexcapades indefinitely.

Although there is a sketch of the Eiffel Tower in his window, Bernard is somehow an American in Paris. Early in the action he is visited by an old pal from college, Robert (Christopher Lupia), who has come in from Wisconsin. Both Potocki and Lupia are freed from the responsibility of speaking in an accent, a burden most of the female players must

bear. Bernard’s household servant, Berthe (Chelsea Lembo), and two attendants, the Italian Gabriella (Elizabeth Klink) and the German Gretchen (Liz Stanistreet), all speak in accents. The third stewardess, Gloria (Jessie Dobrzynski), the American from TWA, does not, to her disadvantage.

Boeing, Boeing runs about two and a half hours, long for a farce, in which the velocity of events going wrong (incriminating garments show up in inappropriate rooms, flights are cancelled) keeps increasing. For the first hour every mishap slams Robert in the kisser, and he is at pains to bring Bernard up to speed, who usually responds with a long-delayed wail.

In other productions Robert has been tormented with physical misfortunes, such as the need to balance a vacuum cleaner, but here his response is verbal, with increasing volume and desperation.

Lupia’s Robert is a departure from his previous roles. Something of a star at Le Moyne College, he was impressive in demanding roles such as his turn in Bertolt Brecht’s Arturo Ui. His first directing assignment was the hyper-serious 1984 last August. Newbie director Hedgcock, a master’s degree student at Syracuse University, calls for deeper and sweatier exasperation, but Lupia has a few tricks of his own, such as an unexpected backflip when he seems to be nearing exhaustion.

Derek Potocki, one of the hunkiest players in community theater, has more often been an incisive supporting actor than a lead. We grasp immediately why the girls are all smitten with Bernard, but Potocki is not afraid to reveal that character’s fundamental selfishness and dishonesty. He provokes laughter here not so much for his anxiety as his deserved comeuppance.

While Bernard and Robert are mustering the heavy lifting, Chelsea Lembo as the hard-pressed and cynical Berthe is consistently stealing scene after scene, as she underplays whenever the men are blowing their tops. In her program notes, Lembo says this is her first role since returning to the area from Boston, but she has local credits that include a Talent Company production of West Side Story. Given the American love-hate relationship with all things French, Lembo whips her accent to get an extra measure out of every insult and putdown.

The three flight attendants turn out to be relatively thankless roles, alas, and Samantha Linnett’s costumes do not serve the ladies well. Having the most fun is Liz Stanistreet, younger sister of veteran player Lynn Stanistreet, as the pugnacious Gretchen from Lufthansa. Mel Brooks could have used her in The Producers. SNT

ooking for its first bowl appearance under third-year coach Dino Babers, the Syracuse University football team will face a difficult schedule but one that appears a little less daunting than last season.

In finishing 4-8 for the second consecutive year under Babers, the 2017 Orange faced 10 teams that had gone to a bowl game the previous season. This year, seven teams on SU’s schedule played in a bowl game after the 2017 season.

This year’s schedule includes six home games, including a Friday-night matchup with Louisville that will be televised nationally by one of the ESPN networks, and a non-conference game against Notre Dame Nov. 17 at Yankee Stadium. Fans Come Out For Orange Women’s Hoops The Syracuse University women’s basketball team didn’t set an attendance record Jan. 21, but the Orange did improve to 10-0 at the Carrier Dome with a 70-52 romp over Atlantic Coast Conference rival Pittsburgh.

SU was pushing to break its home single-game attendance record of 11,021 set

when Notre Dame visited the Dome last year. The Orange didn’t get close to the record Jan. 21 but did set a season-high with 8,126 fans.

“We are very happy with the win and it was good to come into the Dome and have a great crowd,” SU coach Quentin Hillsman said. “I thought that our university, the support staff and the people that surround our program did an excellent job of getting the Dome pretty packed and we definitely had a home-court advantage in this game. I have to give our girls a lot of credit because they bounced back from a couple road losses and played hard.”

Tiana Mangakahia and Amaya Finklea-Guity led all scorers with 14 points each, while Jasmine Nwajei had a game-high nine rebounds in 16 minutes for Syracuse (15-5 overall and 3-4 in the ACC). The Orange made 10 3-pointers; it was the 11th game this season the team has made 10 or more treys.

DICK FORD: STILL ROCKIN’ THE IVORIES

D

ick Ford has a new CD release, but don’t look for it in stores or online. It’s not for sale. Ironically, since his career has not focused on recording (Ford ran the nonprofit Signature Music educational program for more than two decades), he reflects that the only time he listens to his own music is when he’s playing.

At 80, his Dick Ford Pianist CD is a marketing tool to facilitate bookings of his solo gigs, like his recent weekly series at the Colgate Inn in Hamilton and his current Thursday-evening run at the Gould Hotel in Seneca Falls, as well as playing at wedding receptions. In collaboration with producer Todd Hobin, Ford samples from “The Great American Songbook,” a lineup of traditional standards from “Days of Wine and Roses” to “Silent Night” to “Over the Rainbow.” To obtain a copy of the CD, call (315) 727-2720.

What was your reaction when you listened to your own work?

Did we get through without many clunkers? I did it with my friend Todd Hobin, and a couple of times we did a false start on a piece and we just said, “OK, we’ll start that over again.”

In a past life you were well known as a counselor. Have you chosen your genre as relaxing, perhaps therapeutic?

Yes. When I played at the Colgate Inn, or presently at the Gould Hotel, you know very little about what’s going on with the people in the room. But I do know that people enjoy listening to something that will help them relax, whether they’re eating a meal or having a glass of wine or engaged in a conversation.

My approach to music is to play something that is relaxing, and maybe familiar in a way that people can connect with their own past, bring back a memory. Unless you really want to engage the room in an extroverted way, just be mellow.

Ronnie Leigh said, “When I was younger I used to go outside during a break and smoke a cigarette or something. Then I learned that my job is to schmooze with the customers. Some will stay and have another drink. They’ll ask for a tune, and you’ll tell them, “Yeah, I’ll play that tune for you in my next set.” The key is to develop a relationship so they’ll either stay longer that evening, or come back another

time. It’s all about helping the host, the owner of the business. It creates revenue.

One time at the Colgate Inn you discovered an audience member was a bandleader. Do you get any vibes to tell you who is there?

People will generally tell you at the bar, or at a table. At a hotel, where there may be people who are there from out of town, staying overnight for a day or two, my job is to say, “Hi, I’m Dick, I’m the piano player. Are you local? What brings you to the inn tonight?” and engage people in dialogue. I think they appreciate that somebody who is a musician felt comfortable just touching base.

How would you compare your musical development with the average experience of someone who was a student in one of your former music programs?

When I was developing first in high school, then in college, I was the leader of a band. So I made the decisions and said, “Let’s work on these songs.” We would share ideas in a group. We were empowering ourselves like a bunch of guys playing basketball together; you do what each guy can do.

When you’re working with teenagers or young adults in a band, you play off each other’s experience. With the teens I was working with, they were playing their instruments in a parallel with the lessons they were taking, either private or in a high school band. When I started working with them in public performance, I was really nurturing empowerment. The art of teaching is, I believe, in any small steps you can take.

Who were the people who came to you for those lessons?

Most of them just showed up. Maybe a parent, maybe a music teacher said, “Go see Dick, you can get something.” They needed to know that you took them as a full person in a non-judgmental, affirming environment, and that nothing was going to bother me about whatever baggage they might have been carrying.

Your image has generally been traditional, but your performances rocked the Colgate Inn. Did you discover your rockin’ self somewhere along the way?

Most people don’t realize that I’m an extrovert, and I really understand entertaining. When I was educated in a music school, the emphasis was on playing classical music, preparing for your faculty, and performing at very structured recitals wearing a tux. And I grew up playing in rural communities at square dances, polkas, jitterbugging, and knowing that people enjoyed dancing to different kinds of music.

People don’t realize when you’re studying to be a musician that you’re visibly out in the public, and people want to identify with you. Peter, Paul and Mary, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, local people like Ronnie Leigh, people want to listen to them because they have some credibility with audiences.

Who do you listen to?

The Great American Songbook used to be Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin. Now for me it would be Porter, Berlin and Gershwin, and (music composers) Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand and Johnny Mandel. SNT

The band features Rob McCall (lead vocals, guitar), Corey Jordan (guitar, vocals) and Billy Harrison (drums). They bring their select style to life with subtle strength that seems to grow through each number.

Although the tracks are on the soft side, their down-to-earth lyrics do well to snap listeners’ attention. While talking about mundane reality, McCall has a way of hitting the nail on the head when it comes to explaining life as an adult looking for more: “My whole life you told me to dream/ one day I had to give up everything/ go work in tall buildings/ you tell me the best is yet to come/ you run and scrape your knees ’cause you’re young/ oh, so young/ you say I’m in too deep/ I say let’s play for keeps/ and build our way…Look at you, growing through your sleeves/ get your new shoes, don’t smoke too much weed.”

It’s the honesty that makes the lyrics both effective and endearing. The songs are layered, with ethereal, ambient tracks building to create a full sound that seems to float.

The Action! 5 (independent) Lively, punchy and fun, the new CD from The Action! is like a tackle box full of hooks. Production is sparkly and vocals

are impossibly tight, with harmonies ripping through songs such as the bubbly “Summertime.”

Very much in the style of Reel Big Fish, songs like “I’m Gonna Beat Up Your Boyfriend” are straight-up punk-ska that make you jump, shout and sing along with simple yet effective lyrics. “Don’t tell me he’s only playing/ ’cause I’ve heard all the things he’s saying/ you deserve someone much better/ a guy who’s got his shit together…yeah, you gotta go/ you gotta go/ you gotta leave him alone/ it’s hard to walk away/ once you do, you’re never ever, ever, gonna look back/ I’m gonna beat up, beat up your boyfriend.”

Since 1998, The Action! have released four albums, five EPs, and received two Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys).

The band includes Mike Gibson (vocals, guitar), Chris Nolan (trumpet, vocals), Craig Chamberlain (drums), Adam Carkey (bass) and Dan King (trombone). They combine to bring incredible energy not only to their live performances, but also their studio recordings.

Several songs have a way of taking a sad story and placing it against happy horns, shouting vocals and witty lyrics that twist the tune back around. “Lost the Girl” sets the scene with a painful breakup that turns into a drinking anthem: “It’s a Saturday night/ nobody’s in love with me/ so, it’s all right/ to be as drunk as I wanna be/ I’ve already lost the girl, so I’ll let my memories drown/ we’re gonna shut down this town.”

“Amy” is reminiscent of Reel Big Fish’s “Drunk Again,” swaying through a tale of a girl who’s been crying and a man who’s been trying. “Never Been to Boston” is funny and clever, and the closing song, “Swallow the Bomb,” rocks heavier and harder than anything else on the disc.

Nevertheless, She Persisted Women stand up for solidarity in Syracuse and across the country

By Kira Maddox A crowd formed in the parking lot of Laci’s Tapas Bar on Syracuse’s North Side Saturday morning, Jan. 20. The group began as only a handful of women, but soon it swelled to more than 300 as the time of the rally drew closer.

The crowd was a mix of backgrounds and life experiences. Ages ranged from toddler to Vietnam War veterans. Some were native-born U.S. citizens, while others were immigrants. Decked out in iconic pink “pussy hats,” holding signs and chanting in unison, they all had a single goal: solidarity.

“What does a feminist look like?” Roseanne Olszewski, a co-founder of Syracuse’s New Feminists for Justice, the group behind the event, asked the marchers.

“This is what a feminist looks like!” they roared back.

Amid the outward show of love and support for all women, a discussion was stirring about the role of intersectionality and allyship. A letter, penned by “a coalition of women,” was read aloud before the march began. Titled “Dear Sisterz,” the piece acknowledged a problem with the women’s march — both national and local — seemingly creating a platform that favored white, heterosexual, able-bodied, cisgendered women.

“Although the mass mobilization against Donald Trump was impressive, it left many womxn behind, feeling a collective sense of ‘where have you been’ and also ‘where are you going to be next week’ when the real work needs to be done,” the letter stated.

The 2018 Women’s March took place nationwide to support women’s rights and equality and bring awareness to the current political climate. (“What makes America

great? Love makes America great,” was a common local call-and-response.) It came on the anniversary of last year’s Women’s March — the initial event that drew millions worldwide — and one year after President Trump’s inauguration.

Syracuse’s New Feminists for Justice, with Olszewski and co-founder Donna Moore, spearheaded both the 2017 and 2018 marches. Olszewski said she was looking for an outlet for her frustration, as she feared the new administration would derail progressive policies.

“We determined, if the country was going to resist this, we would need a feminist movement,” Olszewski said. The group also organized last year’s thousands-strong Women’s March.

This year’s event was to promote healing and celebrate the accomplishments of women. Along with the rally Saturday there was a Women Together Inspiring Entrepreneurial Success (TIES) event on Friday, Jan. 19, to discuss supporting women-owned businesses and the history of women’s suffrage, and a special tailgating event for the Sunday, Jan. 21, Syracuse University women’s basketball game against the Pittsburgh Panthers (SU won 70-52).

The group marched to the ArtRage gallery a few blocks from Laci’s. The gallery agreed to keep its exhibit, Still The One: Douglas Lloyd Makes Portraits of Women Making Change the Old-Fashioned Way, up for the weekend so marchers could see the 26 local women activists displayed in the show.

Poet Joan Netta Burstyn, an English immigrant who remembered the previous women’s rights movement, spoke of resistance and keeping momentum going in the face of adversity.

“What does it take for me to be true to what I want, even if I’m not going to get it?” she told the group to ask themselves.

Azra Gradincic, another speaker, recently became a U.S. citizen after immigrating to the country from Bosnia in the 1990s while fleeing the Bosnian War. She recalled bullets flying through her home as a child, remembered dodging sniper fire in the streets and described a near-death experience when a grenade was thrown into an apartment where she and her family were seeking refuge.

She told the mass of people packed into the gallery that they had strength in numbers and in their unity: “This is my home.

These are my people. I love my people.”

Although Olszewski said the group told the community everyone could be involved and let people come to them if they wanted to be present, Cjala Surratt, one of the people behind the letter, said

historically that type of laid-back attitude isn’t enough.

“It’s indicative of an ongoing issue,” she said. Marginalized women were not involved in planning the event, creating a microcosm of the common issues seen in most political spaces: The majority holds power, while the less privileged go unheard. There was passion in having a movement, but a seeming lack of interest in long-term community investment or engagement, Surratt said.

Olszewski said event organizers heard the message and would try to be more inclusive going forward. Surratt said this mindfulness, and seeking other voices to lead, is the mark of true allyship and can help create a better sense of unity rather than schism in the movement. This is especially true in the current political climate, where she said silence for some has a stronger potential to lead to ramifications.

“You should always ask yourself, whether you’re sitting in a room or meeting virtually, whose voice isn’t present,” Surratt said. SNT

The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) has immediate openings for three highly skilled machinists, for one-year term appointments.

As a member of one of the two professional machine shops at CLASSE, fabricate precision components and repair parts for sophisticated research equipment and systems.

The successful candidates will perform machining and assembly of highly sophisticated experimental apparatus, working at close tolerances and using a variety of precision machine equipment/tools such as milling machines, lathes, and drill presses. The individuals must be able to work from blueprints/shop drawings, be able to select materials and proper tooling, follow job through from start to finish, and communicate clearly with other technical staff, engineers, and researchers. Assist researchers with designing complex, unique components/systems and assessing material options. Design and construct machine tool setups, assembly systems and tooling for special projects.

Instruct others in new techniques and in equipment use. CNC experience highly desirable.

These are one-year, full-time, benefits-eligible term positions.

Bachelor’s degree or 4-5 years of education with training in formal apprenticeships in machine trades/tool and die makers or in other postsecondary programs offered at community colleges or technical schools. More than 4 years of related experience.

Ability to move 50 pounds. Must have a demonstrated record of being dependable/ reliable, having consistent attention to details, and following critical procedures and instructions with a sharp eye toward safety and accuracy. Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment. Able to receive directions and to communicate effectively in the shop and across all research groups in the department.

Work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment.

One-to-two years of experience in an academic/research shop facility preferred.

To honor Evie’s memory, and in alignment with current astrological omens, I urge you human Libras to strip away any layers of false identity you’ve been pressured to acquire. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) The giant panda

is a bear native to China. In the wild, its diet is 99 percent bamboo.
