NEWS WEIRD By Chuck Shepherd

Foul-Feathered Friends

In September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noting a recent uptick in cases of “live-poultry-associated salmonella,” repeated its earlier — and apparently largely ignored — alert that people should not be kissing chickens, ducks or turkeys. CDC noted the recent popularity of urban egg farming, but reminded “hipster” farmers and faddish pet patrons that cuddling the animals, or bringing the little darlings into the home, even those that appear clean and friendly, can spread dangerous bacteria for to which humans are vulnerable.

Suspicions Confirmed

A recent working paper by two Louisiana State University economists revealed that the state’s juvenile court judges dole out harsher sentences on weeks following a loss by the LSU football team, among those judges who matriculated at LSU. The differences in sentences were particularly stark in those seasons that LSU’s team was nationally ranked. All sentences from 1996 to 2012 were examined, for first-time juvenile offenders, except for murder and aggravated-rape cases. 10.05.16 - 10.11.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

The NCAA’s two-year probation handed to Georgia Southern University’s football program in July included a note that two football players were given “impermissible” inside help to pass a course. It turns out that even though GSU’s former assistant director of student-athlete services stealthily wrote five extra-credit assignments for each of the players, still, neither player was apparently in good enough shape to pass the course.

Fish Stories

Emma Marsh of Kuraby, Australia, shelled out $500 in September for her goldfish’s emergency medical care to remove the pebble stuck in poor Conquer’s throat. Brisbane’s Courier-Mail noted that the $500 could have bought 40 replacements — that $500 is about what an actual bar of gold of Conquer’s weight would cost. Elsewhere Down Under, researchers from Murdoch University in Perth said in August they were working on a goldfish-control program after learning that one species dumped in the nutrient-rich Vasse River in Western Australia could grow to 4 pounds — the size of a football.

ANNUAL MANLIUS ART SHOW TURNS 90 Associated Arists’ juried exhibition at Manlius Public Library builds on longevity and variety. This is the 90th edition of a show that features artists from the Syracuse area. There continues to be a group-exhibit dynamic, a mix of media, visual perspectives and styles ranging from abstract to figurative. The show displays Barbara Siau’s portrait of June Wilson and Barbara Vural’s acrylic depicting a beach on a day of blazing sun. Elsewhere, works with a different sensibility hang on gallery walls. “Edges” by Tina Strutz blends bright colors with an array of geometric shapes. In “Tuscan Gold,” Nives Marzocchi celebrates mushrooms in a major way. The mushrooms are large-sized and appealing, and the acrylic lights up with lots of color on its borders. The artist has played with an idea and brought it to fruition. There are other instances in which artists looked for a fresh approach to portray a scene. In “Holiday Brunch,” Joy Englehart depicts dishes and other items on a table

but does so in an expansive way. She emphasizes visual links between the objects, influencing viewers to see them from a different perspective. Patricia Gancarl’s portrayal of migrant workers picking melons near Homestead, Fla., eschews a straight-on presentation. The melons are tiny, the workers faint figures who seem destined to fade away. The piece touches on the nature of their labor: short-term and seasonal, isolated but essential. Without their work, the melons won’t come to markets or consumers’ tables. The show also picks up contrasting visual strategies. Ute Ostreicher’s acrylic interprets a desert scene, focusing on rock formations such as majestic arches. A second acrylic by Mimi George is sparse, small and invested in setting a mood. We see the outline of bushes on a plain and not much else. The harvest season has long passed, and spring is months away. And there are other varied artworks on display. They include Rachael Ikins’ whimsical image of a cat behind flowers,

and Karen Kozicki’s “Laundry Day,” which portrays a shirt. That photo is part of an ongoing body of work in which Kozicki shoots everyday objects from an innovative perspective. Finally, Carol Boyer’s fabric, “Coastal Color,” plays with surface in a significant way. The threads are rough and suggest turbulent waters. The exhibit commemorates Associated Artists’ long history, showcases various artworks, and continues a tradition of staging the juried shows at the Manlius Public Library. Associated Artists sponsors and runs its own gallery space at the library. That’s not the only display of art at this site. The library itself hosts an Audubon print gallery and also presents art in the Community Room. The Associated Artists’ exhibition is on display through Oct. 15 at the Manlius Public Library, 1 Arkie Albanese Way. The library is open Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. Call 682-6400 for information. SNT

KRAMER By Jeff Kramer

COLUMNIST’S HEART STILL IN RIGHT PLACE

L

et’s get right to the heart of the matter: I’m fine. I know some of you were concerned about my recent pacemaker implantation, and a few of you even prayed for me, but everything seems to be working just fine, so no worries.

I have been touched by the outpouring. I wish to thank everyone who contacted me personally or, even better, on social media so everyone could see how important I am, from the bottom of my dual-chamber, MRI-compatible Surescan® Heart Device by Medtronic. This experience already is making me a better person, albeit in a somewhat programmed, mechanical way. At various times, I can sense my rewired heart shifting into human emotion syncopation mode. A few nanoseconds ago my sinoatrial node experienced compassion response retrograde p-waves for former Miss Universe Alicia Machado. That impulse is now being replaced by a-v sequential pacing spikes of hope and joy. Gosh, it feels great to be ... be ... be ... beeeeeeeeeeep ... alive. Btw, I am now a free Wi-Fi hotspot. Rehab-wise, there isn’t much to do except watch sports on television. I just need to make sure I don’t reach above my shoulder or lift anything more than 10 pounds with my left hand for the next six weeks. Sometimes I wear a sling on my left arm, per doctor’s orders. The concern is that I might tear out the pacemaker leads, necessitating another $20 co-payment and more pacemaker columns.

10.05.16 - 10.11.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Because I am a left-handed person with impulse control issues, I am at a slightly higher risk for accidental lead extraction. I have been making sudden, jerky movements with my left hand for decades. It’s hard to go cold chicken. But while using my right hand poses a stiff challenge, I’m up for it. As for the procedure, it was done at Upstate University Hospital by a team of friendly folks wearing silly blue shower caps. They made me wear one, too. The surgery took about two hours. I was awake the whole time, depending on your definition of awake. I would have been comfortable getting a pacemaker at any of the fine hospitals we have in Syracuse, including Stack Veterinary Hospital, which has the advantage of not charging for parking. But I like the idea of supporting a teaching hospital. I felt proud and socially useful during the procedure when I heard one of the doctors explain to a young medical student, “No, Nathaniel, that’s not his heart, that’s a fingerling potato.” Or maybe that didn’t happen. It’s hard to tell what is going on when you are under “twilight anesthesia.” However, I do have a distinct memory of my cardiologist, who for some reason didn’t want his name used here, rooting around inside my upper chest as if

he were rummaging through his sofa for a missing clicker. In fact, the cardiologist was forming the pocket in the muscles where they place the pacemaker, which is about the size of a 50-cent piece. At one point there was some kind of a technical disagreement among the team involving the size of wires or whatever. It never got nasty, but I had a dreamy, pleasant, floating-on-a-cloud sensation that things were not going well. Just stay out of it, Jeff, I calmly told myself. This has nothing to do with you. Then one of the shower cap people smiled and told me everything was done and that I did great, and then I was back in my room eating a turkey sandwich. My wife, Leigh, arrived. When she saw me sitting up, texting, making inappropriate comments and acting like the same old Jeff Kramer, she seemed stunned, happy, relieved and slightly annoyed that the upgrade hadn’t been more, well, comprehensive. Our reunion reminded me of when you run into someone you haven’t seen for a long time in the produce department at Wegmans, and you catch up on everything and it’s kind of fun. And then you run into them again 20 minutes later in the Asian Foods section, and it’s “Oh, hey, it’s you again” and suddenly you’re both fleeing to opposite ends of the store. Amazingly, I was home before my teenage daughters got home from school. To them, it was almost as if nothing had happened. The Medtronic parental bonding algorithm launched right on cue. I allowed both girls to give me a hug after I instructed them to avoid the incision area and I confirmed that neither girl was operating a soldering gun or industrial magnet. Once it became clear that the pacemaker lacked a touchscreen and was of no interest to the Snapchat or Instagram communities the girls moved on and everything got back to normal. To paraphrase the Roman philosopher Pliney the Elder, home is where the cathode attached to the myocardium is. My pacemaker might require a few tweaks. In the evenings it sometimes feels like there’s a creepy clown in my chest operating a teeny-tiny jackhammer, but otherwise I feel stronger every day. I am lucky that this amazing technology exists. My social consciousness program is now advising you to get your heart checked if you have even the slightest concern. Life is precious, and I want all of you to take good care of yourselves. OK, maybe not the Tangerine Nightmare. Even a pacemaker has its limits. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. SNT

LENNON-BOWIE TRIBUTE OFFERS A SLICK FINISH

T

wo gigantic forces in music will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 8, 7 p.m., at the Palace Theatre, 2384 James St.: John Lennon, whose birthday is Oct. 9, and David Bowie, who died last January.

“Heroes and Lennon’s 76th Birthday” marks the first for promoter Paul Davie’s BeatleCuse Productions, Inc., as a 501c3 not-for-profit organization. (Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door; visit fabfivepaul.com.) The “heroes” element not only pays tribute to the title of Bowie’s 1977 album but also the fact that this event will benefit Clear Path for Veterans. “It dawned on me talking to Melinda (Sorrentino, manager of The Ridge) that we should connect ‘heroes’ with Clear Path. They’re our heroes,” Davie says. “She liked BeatleCuse and wanted to work with me on a show, so we put ‘heroes’ in front of Lennon to celebrate his 76th birthday and

8

we’ll raise money. And the only guy to bridge the gap between Lennon and Bowie is Earl Slick.” Guitarist Slick is known for his work on albums from both megastars, including Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and Station to Station and Lennon’s final LP Double Fantasy in 1980. Slick replaced Stevie Ray Vaughan during Bowie’s 1983 “Serious Moonlight” tour and played at the Carrier Dome for a show. Davie was at that concert. “All the songs we’re playing at the show, he played on,” Davie says. “They’re all familiar hits.” But Slick has only recently been able to look back at those tours and reflect from an outsider’s perspective. “In hindsight, I can look at it differently now,” he says. “With DB (Bowie), it was only the last month or so that I could look at it from an outside point of view. It took a while with the shock of it all. “I’ve watched things on YouTube that I’ve seen before, but never in that light. When you’re immersed in it, you’re just there. It’s a state

of being. You’re on the road and your entire existence is geared toward that performance. There’s nothing like it. You melt into a mindset that is the most amazing in the world. When I’m on stage, I’m not thinking about anything. It’s the most free you’ll ever feel. That’s what attracts the audience. If nobody’s thinking, everybody’s having a good time!” Slick plans to bring that energy and authenticity to the Palace stage, where he’ll play alongside local musicians and bands. He also emphasized how rare it is for him to accept invitations to tribute shows. The recommendation came from fellow musical powerhouse Mark Hudson, who has become a BeatleCuse alum. After Slick talked to Davie, he could tell that he “gets it” and felt comfortable enough to be part of the celebration. “I turn down 99.9 percent of these (requests),” Slick says. “I love the idea of tribute bands and keeping the music alive, but it has to be with the right people for the right reasons — not for people

cashing in on my name or my dead friend. I like what (Davie’s) doing and I like where it’s going. It’s gonna be fun and it’s for a good cause. I’m really looking forward to it.” But the connections won’t stop there. Lennon celebrated his 31st birthday in Syracuse in 1971, when he and Yoko Ono were in town for the opening of her exhibit This is Not Here at the Everson Museum of Art. There was even supposed to be a secret Beatles reunion concert: Although Paul McCartney and George Harrison didn’t make it, Ringo Starr, Phil Spector, Allen Ginsberg, Eric Clapton and Jim Keltner showed up. Crowds got wind of the event and Ono and Lennon avoided the mayhem, ending the night with a quiet birthday celebration at the Hotel Syracuse. While Lennon and Ono were here, they also stopped at the Onondaga Reservation to meet Onondaga Nation Faithkeeper Oren Lyons. The three became friends, and Lyons will speak about their meeting during the Saturday concert. The show will feature songs chronologically through Lennon’s career from 1963 to 1980, interspersed with rock history facts. “These are the types of things that I want people to know about,” Davie says. “There are so many cool rock’n’roll stories.” THE FRIENDS One story concerns “Fame,” Bowie’s 1975 smash hit. Bowie had just hired Slick to record his version of The Beatles’ “Across the Universe” in New York City, and he wanted to bring Lennon into the studio. When he did, the two vented about fame getting to them. That conversation turned into the song that features Lennon and Slick —

and became Bowie’s first No. 1 song. “We’re going to pay homage to two guys who changed the world,” Slick says. “I’m still a fan. I’ve never lost that and the day that I do, I’m in deep shit. I love music and have a built-in respect for those who came before me. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be doing this.” Slick also believes in the power of music and its ability to change people’s lives. “I want to get to the younger demographic,” he says. “I want them to see what it’s like when somebody lives and breathes this shit 24 hours a day. Everyone’s got a skewed view of this (music). They don’t understand why we do this or what we do. It’s all about the magic. “My whole philosophy is that when I get on stage, people have paid money they’ve worked hard for to come to that show. I don’t care if it’s $1 or $1,000, I need to give them 110 percent of what I’ve got. If I can make them feel something — laugh, cry, scream, whatever — then I did my job. I want to give them something they can walk away with.” SNT

LECTURE LECTURE SERI Advice from the Artist:

“Oh, boy. I’ll give the same answer I would have 30 years ago. The best way if you want to do this—is to do it. Immerse yourself in it 24 hours a day. Don’t be looking for the big payoff or stardom or ‘look at me, I’m a rock star.’ Pick up your instrument and live with it 24 hours a day. And get out and play. That’s the best advice I can give anybody. That’s organic. That’s when things work. “If you concentrate on what you’re doing and you’re doing it because you love it, then keep writing, keep playing, keep singing. Live it. Make it a lifestyle. Music is always No. 1. And don’t have a backup plan. I never had one. I don’t now. If you don’t have a safety net, you won’t use it. It forces you to push along. Then you’ll find in time if you’re good enough to get anywhere. Screw the safety net.”

MUSIC

10

By Jessica Novak Isbell, 37, has earned two 2016 Grammy Awards for Best American Roots Song and Best Americana Album, while Ritter was named one of the “100 Greatest Living Songwriters” by Paste magazine in 2006. Between the two, the show is bound to be one of the best for local listeners who love a good story. Isbell took a few minutes out of his hectic tour life to speak with the Syracuse New Times. You learned to play musical instruments from several family members. What made you choose to make a career out of music? It really wasn’t much of a choice. It’s all I wanted to do. It’s a fun job for obvious reasons. I started when I was really young and never wanted to be a fireman or a spaceman. This was always it. What motivated you to stick with it? It is difficult at some points. But that’s a philosophical question we never really get to answer. Is it stupidity, foolishness or just that I love playing for people? I was just willing to go through it all. Which songwriters inspired you? My parents were young when they had me, so we had a lot of music in common: John Prine, John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor. My dad listened to arena rock and classic country, George Jones, Hank Williams. My grandfather was a preacher, so we got music in church, too. There was always a heavy gospel music influence.

JASON ISBELL WILL SHARE STORIES AT LANDMARK GIG

J

ason Isbell has become a master in the history of storytelling songwriters, with tracks like “Cover Me Up” and “Elephant” that immediately rip listeners’ hearts out. The former Drive-By Trucker visits the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St., on Thursday, Oct. 6, 8 p.m., with fellow singer-songwriter Josh Ritter. (Tickets are $25.50, $35.50 and $45.50; visit landmarktheatre.org.)

10.05.16 - 10.11.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Tell me about playing music with your wife, Amanda Shires. It’s an extension of our relationship. We don’t delineate much between our personal and professional lives. Music is one of the reasons we got together in the first place. We have that in common. It is an advantage when it comes to keeping a relationship together. You just had a baby girl together. Yes, she’s a year old now and she’s with me at the moment. She seems to like touring at this point. She’s

been on a lot of tours with us. We usually have our own bus with me, Amanda, the baby and the nanny and right now I’ve got the baby while Amanda is on her own tour. We’ve been taking her out since she was 3 months old. Sometimes I think she’s easier to keep up with than a guitar player or drummer.

The only thing harder than writing for a writer is not writing. That’s the truth. Traveling and touring and playing music is difficult to balance with family and a personal life. But if you love it, set your own terms for success and go for your own goals, not the goals society or record labels have told you.

What makes a great song? You need a melody that’s going to stick in your head, preferably one that creates tension and release, and something with lyrics. That’s what all good music has in common. My favorite songs are narrative-driven storyteller songs. I think the details are the most important part. You need to make the listener feel like they know something about your life they shouldn’t know. The best songs remind all of us about the things that we all have in common.

How have you set your own terms? I’ve always tried to maintain control over my career. I learned that in Drive-By Truckers. It occurred to me in my early 20s that there are many ways to make a successful career without selling millions of records. I took that to heart. The thing that makes me happiest is being proud of the records I make, and not singing songs I don’t feel strongly about.

How is it being on the road with Josh Ritter? He’s great and he’s been at it a long time. He’s a really smart guy and really good live. I went to his shows before we worked together; I paid for a ticket and went in. I’m a fan of his work.

What’s next for you? We’ll be in the studio in January making another record. Hopefully it’ll be out in early spring or summer. I’ll be in the process of writing those songs until the last day of recording. They’re somewhat written, but I’ll be writing them as I sing the last words of the album. SNT

FOOD

By Margaret McCormick

DOWNTOWN REVS UP NEW MENUS

H

ealthy food has arrived on Salina Street in downtown Syracuse. On the other end of the spectrum, a bakeshop dedicated to buttery-good cookies, cakes, muffins and more has opened a couple blocks away, on South Clinton Street. Here’s a look at the two newcomers, both offering tasty and tempting eats. Original Grain, 302 S. Salina St., is in the former Tim Hortons location. The “fast-casual” restaurant offers healthy fare like grain bowls, nori wraps, smoothies and toasts (think smashed avocado and ricotta cream cheese toast), and it has already found its niche after a little more than a month in business. It’s doing so well, in fact, that the owners are already eyeing expansion to the Syracuse University Hill. “Syracuse has embraced it. We’re so fortunate,’’ says co-owner Eric Hinman. “It’s filling a void.’’ Hinman’s partners are Chris Bily, one of the founders of Modern Malt, a contemporary diner that opened on South Clinton Street in 2015, and Matt Godard, owner of local coffee roaster Cafe Kubal. Hinman is also a partner in CrossFit gym Urban Life Athletics. Hinman and Bily say Original Grain was inspired by their travels to places like Santa Monica and Venice, Calif.,

and New York City and Brooklyn. The new eatery also pays tribute to one of their favorite former downtown restaurants. “We both used to go to LoFo all the time,” Hinman says, “and we were sad when that closed.’’ The venue is bright and airy and seats about 40. The menu is divided into five categories: bowls, brekky (breakfast) bowls, nori wraps, sandwiches and toasts. Place your order at the counter and watch as it’s being prepared. Menu items that have been especially well received include the Original Poke Bowl (with salmon, carrot, cucumber, edamame, avocado and other vegetables, with spicy sauce and sesame-ginger dressing), the Mexi-Cali Bowl (chicken, black beans, roasted corn, pineapple, radishes, avocado, with a cumin dressing) and the Great Swell bowl (with ahi tuna, avocado, cucumber, radishes, with sesame-ginger dressing). The Purple Swag brekky bowl is a popular eye-opener. It teams acai, blackberries, blueberries, yogurt, granola, chia seeds, banana, flaked coconut, coconut milk and coconut oil. Original Grain is doing a brisk business for breakfast and lunch, the partners said, and suppertime traffic is also picking up. Folks stopping in for a bite after work will soon be able to order beer, wine and hard cider to go with their meal. Hours are Mondays through Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit originalgrainsters.com or facebook.com/originalgrainny. Meanwhile, the bakery case at the new Modern Malt Bakeshop,

315 S. Clinton St., tempts with sticky buns, cinnamon buns, croissants, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cookie bars, scones, muffins, biscotti and even homemade dog biscuits. Talk about a sweet spot! Anthony Donofrio is executive chef at Modern Malt, the sophisticated, retro diner that opened a couple doors down the street last year. He and his team were baking all their own breads at the diner and wanted to do more, but they simply didn’t have the room. “We wanted to make our own desserts at the restaurant and it just didn’t work,’’ Donofrio says. “This space became available, and I really wanted to do my own breads, which is something I love to do. To be able to make all our breads in-house makes a huge difference. I couldn’t keep up with it the way we can now.’’ It’s a bright spot, with what seems like acres of bakery cases along one side and tables on the other and in the back, for those who want to eat in. The offerings change often, but the plan is to have some items, like scones, muffins, Danish and certain breads, on the menu for a month, then switch them out. The Pumpkin Spice Brioche and Apple Bacon Cheddar Danish, as examples, are available through October. And then there are the breads: ciabatta, white, honey wheat, rye and a brewer’s bread made with spent grains from Local 315 Brewery. A specialty of the shop is sourdough bread, made with a starter that was cultivated at Modern Malt earlier this year. The bakeshop also serves Recess Coffee and makes its own flavor syrups. Since opening a month ago, the bakeshop has tweaked its hours to cater to after-work traffic. Now you can pick up some carrot cake or Nutella-filled chocolate sandwich cookies before heading home. Hours are Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Grab a space to park in Armory Square and follow the scent of butter and sugar. For more information, visit eatdrinkmalt.com. More Sweets For Downtown Menu Opening soon in downtown Syracuse will be the Sweet Praxis Bakery, 203 E. Water St. The bakery-café will feature cookies, cakes, breads, macarons and more, made with local and organic ingredients whenever possible. For information, visit thesweetpraxis.com. STAGE

By James MacKillop Ezekiel Edmonds and cast members of SU Drama’s Nine. Michael Davis photo

SU DRAMA’S NINE SCORES A 10 Director Federico Fellini’s 1963 movie 8½ is the most enduring work of art to be based on self-doubt and incapacity or writer’s block. When Maury Yeston (music) and Arthur Kopit (words) reshaped the original narrative as the stage musical Nine in 1982, they redefined the creative crisis of the Italian film director, here named Guido Contini, through his relationships with women. This leads to two paradoxes. Although Guido might present himself as a shameless philanderer, Nine is a gleaming showcase for the prodigious female talent in the Syracuse University Drama Department. And in the hands of director-choreographer Anthony Salatino, Nine, a show about not being able to get it going, is one of the department’s most polished and fully realized of recent seasons. SU Drama musicals already have a strong reputation. Going in, however, we intuit that everyone involved knew this production was a step up. It is being performed through Saturday, Oct. 8, in the larger Archbold Theatre at the Syracuse Stage complex, rather than the Storch, allowing for a pit orchestra, led by Brian Cimmet, of nine players including four strings. Felix Cochren’s large, complex set includes elements of a film soundstage, two balconies, Renaissance sculpture, and five screens by lighting

designer Alex Koziaria bearing images of the live action before us. In moments of self-examination we see surf breaking on the shore, Guido’s unconscious mind. There is more to pay heed to than we can follow. Action begins with the cascade of crises concerning Guido (Ezekiel Edmonds). He’s just turned 40, has completed eight films, and does not know how to begin his next project. The ensemble sings “Not Since Chaplin,” an allusion to the Little Tramp’s comparable frustration with City Lights. There is no comfort in his previous successes or no boost when his acclaim means he will be mobbed by adoring crowds wherever he goes. His unhappy wife of 20 years, Luisa (Emma Roos), may leave him if he does not pay more attention to his marriage. Her first big number, “My Husband Makes Movies,” shows that she knows him better than any of the other women: “To make them he lives in a kind of dream/ In which his actions aren’t always what they seem.” 8½ and Nine are, incidentally, autobiographical fictions, not fanciful documentaries. Fellini’s real-life wife, Giulietta Masina, starred in many of his films and bears no relationship to Luisa. Further, it appears futile to link characters in the drama with persons we know from Italian film culture. There’s a picture of Sophia Loren in the program, but that does not mean she is really one of Guido’s women. Luisa represents reality, however, as does Guido’s French producer Liliane La Fleur (Abigail Gjurich), formerly with the Folies Bergères, who would like him to make a musical. Under Salatino’s direction the large ensemble is always a part of each dialogue, as willowy chorines at the Folies or a galloping herd of fillies in a possible spaghetti Western. In his well-considered program notes, Salatino says, “Nine is a fusion of reality and creativity exposing the boundaries between life and art.” Thus Guido’s words can be transmuted quickly into images or motion. As compelling as this production is, especially with triple-threat singer-actor-dancer Ezekiel Edmonds’ excellent Guido, Nine is always asking the audience to think about the creative process, how the personal becomes the palpable, energies from the inner self to ascend to art. Perhaps some of the women who speak to Guido have been conjured up while others walk in on their own two feet. His

longtime mistress Carla (Tristen Buettel) is a lusty blonde who announces her presence with gymnastic energy. Her big entrance number is titled, “A Call From the Vatican,” a woman who commands attention. Always in motion, her dance proclaims her sexual promise even more than her words, a contrast with the introverted and disapproving Luisa. Deeper in memories of Guido’s childhood are very different women. Cutting a contrasting figure is his imposing Mother (faculty member Celia Madeoy), who delivers the title number “Nine” with the ensemble. An experienced Shakespearean and an Equity player, Madeoy relishes the authority it would be difficult to ask of a student. She is also the dialect coach so the entire cast sounds as though they just came from a Milanese fashion show, elegant never caricatured. Appearing with Mother in memory is the young Guido (Séamus Gailor), the future director in short pants. Previously seen in Syracuse Stage’s Caroline, or Change, young master Gailor joins in duets and ensemble numbers and soars in his own affecting solo, “Getting Tall.” Meanwhile, the large cast has more dazzlers to reveal. There’s voluptuous Sarraghina (Jenna Najjar), the outcast prostitute whom young Guido asks for advice about love. Her response, “Be Italian,” is delivered with tambourines, the most flamboyantly “Fellini-esque” of many show-stoppers. Tall, blond, willowy Claudia (Kelsey Roberts) is Guido’s muse, the star of his greatest successes, who is now unattainable. She may call him “My Casanova,” but she wants to be loved herself, not her idealization. Her second-act duet with Guido, “Unusual Way,” while infuriating him, sets him on his way. Nine could easily be subtitled “all these lovely women,” since only two males are the most necessary. Ezekiel Edmonds has been the most favored SU Drama leading man in recent seasons for good reason. The existential, struggling artist hero calls for deep reserves of talent that he delivers. This is a role to launch a career. As for directors, Anthony Salatino has been planning Nine for years. We see his hand in a hundred nuanced touches. In a long career here, he has never been more magnificent. SNT

WELCOME TO BEST OF SYRACUSE

B

est of Syracuse is a reader-generated poll trademarked by the Syracuse New Times. Since its 1997 inception we have asked our readers to nominate in a number of categories. For the 20th anniversary edition, we increased the categories to include: Sports and Wellness, Love and Sex, Arts and Culture, Music, Entertainment and Attractions, Health and Beauty, Local Faces, Food, Drink, Nightlife, Goods and Services, Around Town, Pets and Family, Fun and Games. Your nominations are tallied, and the results bring out the top five in each category. We then turn it all over to you again for the final voting, and the Best of Syracuse emerges. We are proud of the fact that Best of Syracuse is 100 percent reader-generated. If you have an award suggestion, email us at snt@syracusenewtimes.com. We want to hear from you. Thanks to all of the readers who took the time to nominate and vote for your favorite picks. trying to work with your lender during this process. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS. Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. ARIES (March 21-April 19) At a recent party,

a guy I hardly know questioned my authenticity. “You seem to have had an easy life,” he jabbed. “I bet you haven’t suffered enough to be a truly passionate person.” I didn’t choose to engage him, but mused to myself, “Not enough suffering? What about the time I got shot? My divorce? My 5-year-long illness? The manager of my rock band getting killed in a helicopter crash?” But after that initial reaction, my thoughts turned to the adventures that have stoked my passion without causing pain, like the birth of my daughter, getting remarried to the woman I divorced, and performing my music for excited audiences. I bring this up, Aries, because I suspect that you, too, will soon have experiences that refine and deepen your passion through pleasure rather than hardship.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) It’s the Frank and Focused Feedback Phase, Taurus — prime time to solicit insight about how you’re doing. Here are four suggestions to get you started. 1. Ask a person who loves and respects you to speak the compassionate truth about what’s most important for you to learn. 2. Consult a trustworthy adviser who can help motivate you to do the crucial thing you’ve been postponing. 3. Have an imaginary conversation with the person you were a year ago. Encourage the Old You to be honest about how the New You could summon more excellence in pursuing your essential goals. 4. Say this prayer to your favorite tree or animal or meadow: “Show me what I need to do in order to feel more joy.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Many of my readers

regard me as being exceptionally creative. Over the years, they have sent countless emails praising me for my original approach to problem-solving and art-making. But I suspect that I wasn’t born with a greater talent for creativity than anyone else. I’ve simply placed a high value on developing it, and have worked harder to access it than most people. With that in mind, I invite you to tap more deeply into your own mother lode of innovative, imaginative energy. The cosmic trends favor it. Your hormones are nudging you in that direction. What projects could use a jolt of primal brilliance? What areas of your life need a boost of ingenuity?

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Love wants more of you. Love longs for you to give everything you have and receive everything you need. Love is conspiring to bring you beautiful truths and poignant teases, sweet dispensations and confounding mysteries, exacting blessings and riddles that will take your entire life to solve. But here are some crucial questions: Are you truly ready for such intense engagement? Are you willing to do what’s necessary to live at a higher and deeper level? Would you know how to work with such extravagant treasure and wild responsibility? The coming weeks will be prime time to explore the answers to these questions. I’m not sure what your answers will be. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Each of us contains a mul-

tiplicity of selves. You may often feel like there’s just one of you rumbling around inside your psyche, but it’s closer to the truth to say that you’re a community of various characters whose agendas sometimes overlap and sometimes conflict. For example, the needy part of you that craves love isn’t always on the same wavelength as the ambitious part of you that seeks power. That’s why it’s a good idea to periodically organize summit meetings where all of your selves can gather and negotiate. Now is one of those times: a favorable moment to foster harmony among your inner voices and to mobilize them to work together in service of common goals.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Pike’s Peak is a 14,115-foot mountain in Colorado. It’s not a simple task to trek to the top. Unless you’re well-trained, you might experience altitude sickness. Wicked thunderstorms are a regular occurrence during the summer. Snow falls year-round. But back in

1929, an adventurer named Bill Williams decided the task of hiking to the summit wasn’t tough enough. He sought a more demanding challenge. Wearing kneepads, he spent 21 days crawling along as he used his nose to push a peanut all the way up. I advise you to avoid making him your role model in the coming weeks, Virgo. Just climb the mountain. Don’t try to push a peanut up there with your nose, too.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “It isn’t normal to

know what we want,” said psychologist Abraham Maslow. “It is a rare and difficult psychological achievement.” He wasn’t referring to the question of what you want for dinner or the new shoes you plan to buy. He was talking about big, long-term yearnings: what you hope to be when you grow up, the qualities you look for in your best allies, the feelings you’d love to feel in abundance every day of your life. Now here’s the good news, Libra: The next 10 months should bring you the best chance ever to figure out exactly what you want the most. And it all starts now.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Practitioners of the Ayurvedic medical tradition tout the healing power of regular self-massage. Creativity expert Julia Cameron recommends that you periodically go out on dates with yourself. Taoist author Mantak Chia advises you to visualize sending smiles and good wishes to your kidneys, lungs, liver, heart and other organs. He says that these acts of kindness bolster your vigor. The coming weeks will be an especially favorable time to attend to measures like these, Scorpio. I hope you will also be imaginative as you give yourself extra gifts and compliments and praise. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The coming

weeks will be one of the best times ever for wrestling with God or tussling with Fate or grappling with karma. Why do I say that? Because you’re likely to emerge triumphant! That’s right, you lucky, plucky contender. More than I’ve seen in a long time, you have the potential to draw on the crafty power and unruly wisdom and resilient compassion you would need to be an unambiguous winner. A winner of what? You tell me. What dilemma would you most like to resolve? What test would you most like to ace? At what game would you most like to be victorious? Now is the time.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Are you grunting

and sweating as you struggle to preserve and maintain the gains of the past? Or are you smooth and cagey as you maneuver your way toward the rewards of the future? I’m rooting for you to put the emphasis on the second option. Paradoxically, that will be the best way to accomplish the first option. It will also ensure that your motivations are primarily rooted in love and enthusiasm rather than worry and stress. And that will enable you to succeed at the second option.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Do you believe

that you are mostly just a product of social conditioning and your genetic makeup? Or are you willing to entertain a different hypothesis: that you are a primal force of nature on an unpredictable journey? That you are capable of rising above your apparent limitations and expressing aspects of yourself that might have been unimaginable when you were younger? I believe the coming weeks will be a favorable time to play around with this vision. Your knack for transcendence is peaking. So are your powers to escape the past and exceed limited expectations.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) In one of your nightly dreams, Robin Hood may team up with Peter Pan to steal unused treasure from a greedy monster — and then turn the booty over to you. Or maybe you’ll meet a talking hedgehog and singing fox who will cast a spell to heal and revive one of your wounded fantasies. It’s also conceivable that you will recover a magic seed that had been lost or forgotten, and attract the help of a fairy godmother or godfather to help you ripen it.
