The platform was launched in 2011 in an attempt to compete with Facebook, but ultimately failed, according to the BBC. The final nail was an expose by The Wall Street Journal detailing a large data breach from March that Google intentionally chose to keep secret, The Guardian reported. Nearly 500,000 accounts may have had private information exposed to hundreds of third-party sites — not unlike the scandal that happened with Facebook around the same time. CURSES, FOILED AGAIN

Rye Wardlaw, 40, chalked up a big FAIL on July 8 at NW Escape Experience in Vancouver, Washington, when he broke into the business in the pre-dawn hours. According to The Washington Post, Wardlaw tried and failed to enter through a back door using a metal pipe, then knocked a hole through the wall. After climbing through, he knocked over a set of lockers. Then, carrying a burrito and a beer he nicked from the company’s refrigerator, he wandered into the “Kill Room,” an escape room dressed to look like a serial murderer’s hideout. Among the blood-spattered walls and fake cadavers, Wardlaw got scared, but he couldn’t. . . escape. So he called 911 (four times) and pleaded for help. Clark County Sheriff’s officers accepted his confession and charged him with second-degree burglary.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

To kick off an exhibition focused on

the opioid crisis at his Stamford, Connecticut, art gallery on June 22, gallery owner Fernando Alvarez and artist Domenic Esposito placed an 800-pound, 11-foot-long steel sculpture of a bent and burned spoon in front of the headquarters of Purdue Pharma, makers of OxyContin. Purdue has been the subject of lawsuits alleging deceptive marketing and, therefore, responsibility for opioid addiction and overdose issues. “The spoon has always been an albatross for my family,” said Esposito, whose brother has struggled with drug addiction for 14 years. The Associated Press reported police arrested Alvarez for obstructing free passage and confiscated the spoon as evidence.

PERSPECTIVE

An 82-year-old Japanese man who has lived as a naked “hermit” on a deserted island near Taiwan since 1989 has been forced to return to Japan. Masafumi Nagasaki made his way to Sotobanari Island 29 years ago and told Reuters in 2012

that he wished to die there. “Finding a place to die is an important thing to do,” Nagasaki said, “and I’ve decided here is the place for me.” Earlier reports indicated that he at one time had a wife and two children, and he ran a hostess club in Niigata, Japan. “In civilization people treated me like an idiot and made me feel like one. On this island I don’t feel like that,” he said. Nagasaki explained that at first he wore clothes on the island, but a typhoon destroyed his belongings. Alvaro Cerezo, who documents the stories of island castaways, told News.com/au that in April, authorities removed Nagasaki from the island and placed him in government housing in Ishigaki, Japan, because he was ill and weak. “They took him back to civilization and that’s it,” Cerezo said. “They won’t allow him to return.”

BRIGHT IDEA

“ARE YOU BLIND IT 25 MPH” is Ron Ward’s in-your-face (and grammatically lacking) attempt to slow down drivers along his street in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ward has been making signs for years, neighbor Patrick Schmidt told

FOX-17 in June. Ward claims, “By the time (drivers) hit this here driveway, they’re doing at least 50-55 miles an hour.” He just wants people to follow the Richmond Street speed limit. “Slow down, the whole neighborhood’s got kids,” he said. The city of Grand Rapids, however, has no specific plans for speed monitoring on the street.

WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME

Early on June 26, a man who had been sleeping on the South Miami Avenue bridge over the Miami River got a rude awakening as the drawbridge started to raise to allow a boat to pass underneath. Witness Khadijah Andrews had seen the man as she was walking to an early yoga class, she told WSVN-TV, and she looked for him when the bridge began rising. Fortunately, he woke up after sliding down a ways and was able to hold on until the bridge was lowered. Andrews said the unnamed man walked away with no apparent injuries: “You think you’re about to watch a man lose his life. It’s just terrifying. I never want to see that again.” Jen Sorensen

PEOPLE WITH TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS

Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who have made their fortunes in tech-related fields have discovered a spiritually enriching new guru: Jess Magic, a ukulele player and singer who calls herself a “heartist.” At Magic’s intimate, invitation-only “Soul Salons” national tour, participants shared their energy and joined in “songversations” — philosophical rap and improvised music and dance — a process Magic calls “a play date for your inner child.” Andrew Hewitt, creator of Game Changers 500, explains: “For people who live most of the time in their head, this feels like magic.” The New York Times reported that Magic believes her appeal is in response to the spiritual hollowness wealthy executives feel. “People forget that they are human beings rather than human doings,” she said.

BEER CHEERS

Patriotism inspired Rain Wiggand, 22, and Zane Liles, 21, of Collins, Ohio, to construct an American flag using more than 2,000 Budweiser, Bud Light and Miller Lite beer cans. Wiggand posted pictures of the “beer flag” on Twitter on July 4. “It was a rough month of work for Zane and I,” Wiggand confessed, adding that they “averaged somewhere around 14 beers a night for 28 days straight.” Six other friends helped, he said, but they only drank on Thursdays to Sundays. Liles told BuzzFeed News, “It was a monthlong hangover that nothing could cure.” However, he said the project had not ruined beer for him. “I can still drink beer with the best of them.”

TEAR JERKERS

In Ghana, the reaction of mourners at a funeral is a measure of the deceased’s position in the community. But for family members who are unable to express their emotions openly, professional mourners will cry on their behalf. A leader of one team of criers told BBC Africa in July that they charge based on the size of the funeral, and the Kumasi Funeral Criers Association offers different styles of crying, such as crying with swagg, crying and rolling on the ground, and crying and

vomiting. Ghanian funerals also feature dancing pallbearers and giant billboards to announce the funeral arrangements.

DOWN UNDER WONDER

In 1985, Tosya Garibyan of Arinj, in Armenia, asked her husband, Levon Arkelian, 44, to dig a pit under their home where she could store potatoes. But once he got started, Radio Free Europe reported, he just couldn’t stop. Twenty-three years later, the underground oasis Arkelian created is a tourist attraction. Working as many as 18 hours a day with only a hammer and chisel, Arkelian created seven rooms, stairwells and passages running as deep as 65 feet and adorned them with carvings and decorations made from found objects. Arkelian died in 2008, and his widow welcomes tourists to her museum, which includes his shredded work boots and tools. But she says the couple argued about the project. “He ruined his health because of this hole,” she told RFE.

CONSPIRACY THEORY

Brigadier Gen. Gholam Reza Jalali, the head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization, announced in a July 2 press conference that Israel is manipulating the weather over Iran to prevent rain. “Israel and another country in the region have joint teams which work to ensure clouds entering Iranian skies are unable to release rain,” Jalali posited, according to YNet News. “On top of that, we are facing the issue of cloud and snow theft.” However, the head of Iran’s meteorological service was skeptical: “It is not possible for a country to steal snow or clouds. Iran has suffered a prolonged drought, and this is a global trend that does not apply only to Iran.”

QUICK THINKER

In Madison, Wisconsin, an unidentified 19-year-old driver flipped his car after overcorrecting in traffic on July 3. The Wisconsin State Journal reported that the man left the scene and removed some clothing, then pretended to be a jogger who happened by when police questioned him. Police said he was not impaired; he was later charged with leaving a crash scene and driving without a license.

Goodbye, Columbus?

The movement to drop Columbus Day and instead recognize Indigenous Peoples Day comes to Syracuse

n Oct. 12, 1934, an estimated 40,000 people filled the streets of downtown Syracuse for a Columbus Day parade, followed by the dedication of the city’s Columbus monument.

The “abounding panorama of pageantry and joy” featured a mile-long line of marchers, a 500-voice children’s choir and speeches by community leaders, according to the Syracuse Herald, precursor to the defunct Herald-Journal. The celebration ended “fittingly,” with a dinner at the 10-year-old Hotel Syracuse. Syracuse Mayor Randall Marvin’s 10-year-old daughter, Irene, “pulled the silk cords which threw aside the covering of the statue,” an 11-foot, 3,000-pound bronze likeness of Christopher Columbus, sculpted by V. Renzo Baldi, of Florence, Italy. The monument, designed by renowned architect Dwight James Baum, was the culmination of a 25-year campaign among local Italian-Americans seeking to highlight their ethnic pride and patriotism with a memorial to the Italian navigator who sailed to the Americas on behalf of Spain in 1492. Thousands of Italian immigrants arrived in Syracuse between the 1880s and 1920. Many first-, second- and third-generation Italian-Americans pitched in for the

Columbus monument. Joseph J. Pietrafesa, owner of the local clothing manufacturer Learbury’s and co-chair of a fundraising campaign for the monument, described the dedication as “a moment of joy and triumph.” Mayor Marvin called the monument “a triumph of civic spirit. . . (that) will remain as a thing to be admired and treasured. The children of children who are here will find it as heroic, as inspiring as we find it today.” Eight decades later, though, critics say monuments to Columbus ignore that his four trips to the Western Hemisphere highlight colonialism, racism and genocide. Ahead of Columbus Day, which fell this year on Monday, Oct. 8, Mayor Ben Walsh announced the city has partnered with InterFaith Works to hold a series of dialogues on how Syracuse will commemorate the national holiday. InterFaith expected about 15 people to participate in the first five-week dialogue about the historic figure some revere as a brave explorer and others

revile as a cruel, greedy invader. Additional dialogues will take place in 2019. A report with recommendations from all the dialogue groups is expected in the first half of 2019. “I’m hopeful we can come to a better understanding of each other’s interests and concerns and find common ground together,” Walsh said in a press release. Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens will represent Walsh in the dialogues. The dialogue circles come amid a national conversation about how to remember historical figures with controversial pasts. In August 2017, white nationalists gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia, to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. During the protest, James Alex Fields rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one woman and injuring dozens. The Charlottesville events ignited debates over what to do with Confederate monuments. Similar questions arose when Georgetown University confronted revelations that Maryland Jesuits sold enslaved people in 1838. The university held a public ceremony in 2017 honoring the 272 enslaved people that Jesuits sold to Louisiana plantation owners in 1838 and apologizing to their descendants. The university, the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher education in the United States, also renamed two buildings that had been named for Jesuits involved in selling enslaved people. In May, Le Moyne College gave Onondaga Nation faithkeeper Oren Lyons an honorary degree, acknowledging that Jesuit missionaries harmed the Haudenosaunee when they traveled to the region in the 17th century. College officials and Onondaga Nation leaders continue to discuss the effects of the Jesuits’ interactions with the Haudenosaunee during the colonial era. Another local debate focuses on the depiction of the 1851 Jerry Rescue in a mural at the newly refurbished Marriott Syracuse Downtown. The mural, painted in 1948 and 1949, shows a black man shackled at the feet of two white men. Critics say the image evokes painful feelings about slavery, reinforces an image of black people as subservient to white people and highlights the role of white men in Syracuse’s abolitionist history while ignoring the role that women played. The mural also includes an image of Haudenosaunee that some find troubling. “There are a lot of difficult moments in history we have to grapple with,” said Philip Arnold, who teaches religion and Native American studies at Syracuse University. “That’s what links all these narratives up.” For indigenous peoples, these discussions offer “a path of healing and restoration of our relationships with one another,” Arnold said, adding that they “attempt to get at a more

It’s about getting at other voices that have been submerged in the triumphal narratives of America.” A Columbus Day commemoration organized by the Columbus Monument Memorial Association was scheduled for the morning of Oct. 8 at Columbus Circle. A celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day, organized by Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation, followed that afternoon. Berkeley, California, in 1994 became the first U.S. city to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day. Four states and about 60 cities have followed suit, and Syracuse is among numerous communities considering the issue. The Syracuse City School District Board of Education last year tabled a proposal to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day after criticism of the idea. Syracuse University adopted a university-wide celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day in 2016. Syracuse’s Columbus monument drew debate in 1991 and 1992, ahead of the 500th anniversary of the Italian voyager’s journeys to the so-called “New World.” As then Mayor Tom Young unveiled a restored monument in October 1992, a protest took place nearby. A year earlier, Indian activist Dennis Banks led a procession to Columbus Circle, where a dummy representing Columbus was burned in effigy and a man splashed red paint on the monument.

Banks, a founder of the American Indian Movement, died in 2017. Arnold supports Indigenous Peoples Day and advocates adding recognition of Haudenosaunee history at Syracuse’s Columbus monument. “I would like to see equal weight or a tribute to the Haudenosaunee or the Peacemaker and their influence on Western democracy so we have a representation of another version of history,” he said. He thinks the upcoming dialogue circles are a good step. “If more people can hear different points of view it makes the world better,” he said. Michael Oberg, a scholar of Native American history at SUNY Geneseo, said, “Columbus Day needs to go.” The holiday “originated for a very real reason,” he said. “Italian Americans were discriminated against. We need to acknowledge that.” Columbus, though, “enslaved people, he was violent, he was in search of wealth, and he didn’t even come here,” Oberg said. On Oct. 12, 1492, Columbus arrived in the Bahamas and never set foot in North America. “At a pure historical level, there is nothing edifying or heroic about him,” he said. Oberg, who is writing a book on the history of the Onondaga Nation, described the tension over Confederate statues and Columbus Day as “a clash between heritage and history, between myth and history.” Historians are saying, “Let’s consider the costs and consequences of this story,” he explained. “The reconsideration of this story can be disorienting for people. It can force you to set aside cherished notions.” As historians ask questions, “That investigation might turn up evidence that’s upsetting about your heroes,” he said. “Let’s talk about the evidence. Let’s do the work. Let’s not just dismiss stuff as ‘politically correct.’ Let’s not dismiss those people embracing heritage as nut jobs.” The discussion “encourages us to look at a period in the past that had enormous human consequences for the people who lived then and created consequences with which we’re still wrestling,” he said. “Some people will be unhappy and will have their feelings hurt. CELEBRATING THE HUMAN SPIRIT IN RODIN’S SCULPTURES

Early in his career, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) shocked the French art establishment by creating the sculpture “Age of Bronze.” It depicted a fleshand-blood subject, an ordinary man in the nude, instead of an idealized figure. Rodin went on to make dozens of sculptures dealing with the realm of human behavior. He viewed people as spiritual and physical, ugly and beautiful, joyous and anguished. At SU Art Galleries, Rodin: The Human Experience focuses on the artist’s exploration of the human spirit. As he delved into human psychology, the sculptor rejected traditional depictions of people. Instead, he contorted limbs and torsos to create an illusion of movement, and used body language to convey emotions. “Jean de Fiennes, Vetu,” standing more

than 6 feet tall, depicts a figure from Rodin’s monumental sculpture, “The Burghers of Calais.” It draws on an episode from 1317, when English troops commanded by King Edward III besieged the French city of Calais. After 100 days, the populace was starving, and the king said he would accept the city’s surrender on two conditions: Six citizens needed to turn over the keys to the city and present themselves for execution. The half-dozen complied; after some deliberation, their lives were spared. However, the artwork portrays Jean de Fiennes at a moment when he expects to die. born out of a rock. She lies on the ground crawling, struggling to move from her current position. Her left arm is missing. The artwork seems to suggest the agony of the creative process. In “The Creator,” a small female figure whispers in the ear of an elderly man. Some analysts have argued that the man is Rodin himself. “Meditation (With Arms)” again emphasizes the physicality of Rodin’s sculptures. It communicates introspection, as the subject sharply turns his head. The entire body is twisted, from shoulders to hips and legs. “Iris, Messenger of the Gods” demonstrates yet another approach. The figure is headless, seemingly in motion, with the right arm and left leg extended. Rodin: The Human Experience presents other noteworthy works: “The Benedictions,” in which two winged creatures come to bless the earth; “Dance Movement D,” a tiny but excellent work; “Ecclesiastes,” portraying a book and a woman in a contorted pose; and “Three Faunesses,” which plays off mythology and portrays a trio of women dancing. “Fallen Caryatid with Stone” is also influenced by mythology. The caryatid, a mythical creature, strains under the weight of a stone. In addition, the show has several works devoted to Rodin’s contemporaries: busts of writers Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac and composer Gustave Mahler;

and a large sculpture of artist Claude Lorrain. The latter work is the most interesting of these pieces. Finally, several pieces portray Rodin himself. These include a photogravure by American photographer Edward Steichen, and “Portrait of Rodin” by English artist John Tweed. The show, which presents 28 of Rodin’s bronze sculptures, can only sample his body of work. He created numerous sculptures, watercolors, and more than 10,000 drawings. Nonetheless, it highlights one aspect of his work, deftly developing the theme of human experience. Beyond that, it documents the creative energy of a highly influential sculptor who served as a bridge between academic art traditions and modern sculpture. And the exhibition is also something of a departure. It didn’t originate with the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia or the Musee Rodin in Paris. It was selected from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections, which owns a significant number of Rodin’s works. Rodin: The Human Experience is on display through Nov. 18 at SU Art Galleries, accessible through the Shaffer Art Building on the Syracuse University campus. MORE VIEWERS TUNE OUT DURING CAMPAIGN COMMERCIALS

ou can’t avoid them at this time of year. During the TV news, your favorite series or a televised sports event, up pops yet another political advertisement.

In Central New York, you’ve already seen Rep. John Katko’s commercials that address his “visiting assistant professor” opponent; Dana Balter talking more about Donald Trump than herself; Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s comments about New York being “never that great” played over and over; and Rep. Claudia Tenney perched on a motorcycle. You’ll also see an office-seeker’s recorded words taken out of context or candidates blabbing about how you should vote for them because they “aren’t politicians.” Then there are candidates who say for the umpteenth time that they “will fight for the people” while their opponent “works for the donors.” Then the other candidate will say “my opponent has been running false ads against me.” These annoying advertisements are extremely difficult to take seriously. And for all the money spent on them every year, we should question just how effective they actually are. According to 2012 research from the University of California at Los Angeles and Stanford University, 42 percent

of television viewers tune out during campaign commercials. The study also found that the people most likely to sit through TV political ads don’t really care about politics and don’t vote. Those most likely to be actively engaged with these commercials are voters who have already made up their minds. Most strikingly, people who are independents or undecided voters — the very group political commercials are created for in the first place — are most likely to ignore them, especially as the number of those ads increases. And for those viewers who see these ads many times, it makes little difference in deciding their vote. Some political scientists have determined that the impact is minimal, and sometimes, zero. How modern political TV spots became such a staple in our society changed dramatically in the 1964 presidential election. President Lyndon Johnson’s campaign aired the now-infamous “Daisy ad,” which implied without any subtlety that candidate Barry Goldwater would start a nuclear war if elected.

The dark ad, which aired only once on Sept. 7, 1964, during a movie broadcast on NBC, was considered to be a significant factor in Johnson’s eventual victory. The commercial is so iconic, moreover, that New York Republican Rob Astorino recreated it during his 2014 gubernatorial campaign, fanning corruption allegations against Cuomo with a mushroom cloud in the background. While that ad may have been effective in 1964, many commercials we see now, especially for congressional and state legislature seats, are either almost cartoonish, or like Astorino’s, absurdly overdramatic. One recent spot featured a narrator speaking sensationally, almost in rhythm, about Rep. Tenney’s ties with special interests while lighthearted piano music played in the background. This is a serious campaign for a serious office, yet the commercial sounds like a sarcastic nursery rhyme. But it’s not the political blurbs themselves that make them ineffective. We have spent the last 20 years revolutionizing the way we watch television. We have moved further away from the traditional family night in front of the TV when most people would see these commercials, as cable-cutters mount and streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon take hold. For those still dedicated to television programming, nearly half of American

households now use DVR, which has the ability to fast-forward through commercials. And there are many other options, both for TV and TV-like streaming services, where people can pay to skip or shorten ads. The challenges for political campaigns that spend millions of dollars on TV commercials will only get more difficult in the future. Younger generations continue to watch less broadcast television, are less reactive to advertising and marketing than previous generations, and aren’t voting as much as other age groups. So in the end, political TV ads don’t reach the audience they need to in order to make a difference and they don’t make a difference with the audience that they do reach. How is an undecided voter expected to determine who is best to handle their tax money, health care, education and livelihood — based on a 30-second spot featuring a candidate saying how nice of a person they are? As much as we may despise them, political TV advertisements aren’t going anywhere. We will have to endure the next few weeks being bombarded with candidates sitting in diners and walking through factories, with unflattering photos of their opponents who they say are puppets of Donald Trump or Nancy Pelosi. Just hang on until Nov. 7, when the TV airwaves will again focus on commercials about toilet paper. SNT

SCREEN GEMS AT ANNUAL SYRACUSE FILM FEST

Another cinematic smorgasbord of features and short subjects will be on display during the 15th annual Syracuse International Film Festival. Everything from new works by budding student filmmakers to classic cinema from the silent era will be presented, along with guest appearances by noteworthy industry movers and shakers. It’s no wonder that fest co-founder Owen Shapiro once admitted that mounting the event “was like orchestrating 10 different weddings over a single weekend.” This year’s fest, running Wednesday, Oct. 10, through Sunday, Oct. 14, will take place at the Redhouse at City Center, 400 S. Salina St.; Shemin Auditorium, located in the Shaffer Art Building on the Syracuse University campus; and Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St. Visit filminsyracuse.com for information. Here are some noteworthy highlights: Grace Jones. The Syracuse-bred actress, singer and model will receive the festival’s coveted Sophia Award during opening night festivities, although she will not be present at the show. Instead, a 9 p.m. Skype interview with the star will follow screenings of the movies Boomerang, Conan the Destroyer and the documentary Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami

The Hollywood player who has built his own studio at a former Liverpool school will be on hand to discuss the progress of American High, his company that will specialize in teengeared film projects. Several features have already been shot in Central New York such as last summer’s Big Time Adolescence, so feel free to ask Garelick what it’s like to hang out with Saturday Night Live’s antic comic Pete Davidson. Three comic short subjects will be screened, including Charlie Chaplin’s 1915 A Burlesque on Carmen; bespectacled Harold Lloyd in 1920’s An Eastern Westerner; and Buster Keaton navigating a series of jaw-dropping stunts in 1920’s One Week. The band Soft Spoken will provide musical accompaniment for the shorts. A music video competition also follows at 9 p.m. Admission is $15. (Friday, Oct. 12, 7 p.m.; Palace) American Dresser. The senior-citizen biker flick that features scenes shot in 2015 at the Central New York Film Hub is now ready for its close-up. Tom Berenger and Keith David co-star in the scenic road movie. In another road movie (must be a trend), Syracuse native Sean Cunningham chronicles the adventures of two cousins who travel across upstate New York to scatter their late mother’s ashes. Director Cunningham’s labor of love was filmed on a “very low budget,” yet he managed to snag dependable character actor Richard Masur (The Thing, Heaven’s Gate) for a small role. Admission is $10.
