WRITERS CENTER HONORS LATE POET JASON SHINDER On Friday, Oct. 13, the Downtown Writers Center at the YMCA, 340 Montgomery St., will commemorate a late friend through a poetry reading.

First, the center will dedicate its new performance room as the Jason Shinder Theater, honoring a poet and influential advocate for cultural programs at YMCAs. Shinder, who died in 2008, founded the YMCA Writer’s Voice program in New York City and worked with the national YMCA to expand it across the country. Then Marie Howe, a well-known poet and friend of Shinder, will read from her work and his.

Phil Memmer, director of the Arts Branch for the local YMCA, connected with Shinder soon after the Downtown Writers Center opened in 2001. He was impressed by Shinder’s passion for poetry, energy and willingness to support a fledging organization.

“Jason provided the funding that made it possible for us to bring in Reginald Shep-

herd as a writer-in-residence,” Memmer said. “Later there was financial help for readings by other writers.”

That assistance helped launch an ongoing series for the center, which typically hosts between 20 and 25 readings a year.

The poets, and other writers, come from Syracuse, Ithaca and Rochester and from across the nation.

Over the years, a slew of prominent poets have read at Writers Center events: W.D. Snodgrass, winner of a Pulitzer Prize for poetry; Cornelius Eady, whose poems touch on jazz, blues and other topics; Judith Harris, author of Night Garden, which delves into the temporary nature of all things; Martha Collins, whose booklength poem, “Blue Front,” focuses on a race riot in Cairo, Ill. And now Marie Howe will read at the Oct. 13 event. She’s recognized for her ability to explore and reflect on love and faith, loss and death. In her book The Kingdom of Ordinary Life, she discussed

her mother’s decline from illness and death, as well as violence, non-violence, and revenge. Star Market speculated on how Jesus Christ might have reacted to the customers of a neighborhood grocery store.

Her 2017 book Magdalene reinterprets Mary Magdalene, a figure from the New Testament. In Howe’s telling, Magdalene is sensual and spiritual, deeply regrets mistakes she’s made and dwells in the current day watching The Sopranos or picking up sesame noodle takeout.

This book is structured without a single narrator. Instead, several voices emerge, including an everywoman persona for “Magdalene Afterwards.” It speaks of living in the present or past, of having nine children or none, of facing execution as a political prisoner or growing bored at a business meeting.

Howe is one of 10 finalists for a 2017 National Book Award in poetry, sharing that honor with Chen Chen, who read at the center on Sept. 22. The winner will be announced Nov. 5.

In reflecting on the upcoming event, Memmer emphasizes the scope of Shinder’s activities. He had two books of poetry published by Graywolf Press, edited 10 anthologies of poetry, served as

poet laureate for Provincetown on Cape Cod, and heavily promoted the notion of arts programming at YMCAs. “There was a time when most Ys dabbled in the arts,” Memmer said. “Jason pushed the idea of regular programs and had a national impact.”

Shinder, it should be noted, wasn’t dictating to individual Ys. They don’t function as members of a franchise; they have autonomy in selecting programs.

As it happens, the downtown YMCA fully embraced an arts menu. It operates the Writers Center with its readings, classes in poetry, playwriting, and other disciplines, and Young Authors Academy for teens and tweens. It also coordinates after-school programs at several sites and holds classes in dance and pottery at the Fayetteville and Baldwinsville branches.

Finally, Memmer says that the room now known as the Jason Shinder Theater has several advantages over its predecessor: “It seats more people, has better lighting, and is located in a quieter section of the Y,” he said.

FEDS FLEECE NEW YORK TAXPAYERS AGAIN

B

enjamin Franklin famously wrote, “In this world, nothing can be said for certain, except death and taxes.”

Since we live in New York, we’ve come to accept at least the latter, however reluctant we may be.

But if taxes are going to be a certain thing in this world, we’d also like to be certain that the tax dollars we do pay are cycled back into the state in some way that benefits all of us. That’s not entirely the case when it comes to the money that we send to Washington, D.C. New York taxpayers generate a lot more revenue for the federal government than what the federal government is spending on New York taxpayers. A new report by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found that in 2016, New York only received 84 cents in services for every $1 it sent to Washington in taxes. It was estimated that the state sent around $41 billion more to the federal government than what it

received back in federal spending.

A $41 billion tax gap is nothing to sneeze at, especially given that a gap at all in New York is not only a new thing, but it’s a thing that has grown much worse in a short span of time. DiNapoli had previously reported in 2013 that the state sent $19.9 billion more to Washington than what it got back. That means the tax gap has seen a 200 percent increase in just four years.

Not only is the overall size of the gap the largest in the nation, as a Rockefeller Institute report similar to DiNapoli’s estimates, but as New York continues to lose out, the vast majority of states are actually getting back more money than what they

send to the fed. DiNapoli’s 2016 report states that all states on average received $1.18 for every tax dollar sent to the federal government. Remember, New York only got 84 cents.

While it’s not realistic to think that every dime in federal spending can be dished out evenly across the nation, New Yorkers definitely have the right to feel that they are getting ripped off. There are a lot of services in this state where $41 billion could be put to good use.

Along with the numbers, the comptroller’s report comes with an overlaying message. “Federal decision makers should consider this imbalance as they debate proposed budget and policy changes that could significantly impact New York and other states,” DiNapoli said in a release.

He’s absolutely right. The tax reform proposal released recently by President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress includes provisions that could cut federal funding to New York and eliminate federal tax deductions, which allow residents to write off their New York state income and local property taxes on their federal tax returns.

That provision could very well hurt states that have high state and local taxes — like New York — while further ballooning the amount of money we put into the federal government but don’t get back.

Members of New York’s congressional delegation should take that into consideration when discussing tax reform on Capitol Hill. It’s understandable that a densely populated state with so many assets would be responsible for contributing more to the federal treasury than a lot of other states. Yet New York taxpayers should not be required to help subsidize other parts of the country at the rate we are. And it appears unlikely that gap between what we pay and what we get back will shrink much, or at all, in the coming years.

There’s a whole conversation that needs to be held on the inequality of federal spending. DiNapoli’s report and the tax plan talks going on in Washington are both indications that we live in the right state and this is the right time to begin that conversation. SNT SNT

DANCING FEET AND ELOQUENT AGING Many of the most affecting stage works are journeys, as we travel with characters to see where the road leads. In Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful it’s a search for an ineffable past to fill a loss of self.

More explosive is Ken Ludwig’s updating of the Gershwin brothers in Crazy for You: The destination is the Nevada burg of Deadrock, where we’re greeted by two six-person choruses of cowgirls and cowboys. Both journeys deliver rewards.

an assistant professor for SU Drama.

Standards have never been higher, so if Marcum is going to knock our eyes out, his reach must extend beyond what we usually grasp. That’s what he does.

Crazy for You has been a bulletproof show since it first appeared in 1992. Ken Ludwig, a comic playwright with a taste for the 1930s (Lend Me a Tenor), started with George and Ira Gershwin’s 1930 hit Girl Crazy, rebuilt the plot and culled hits from other Gershwin shows. Every number is a hit, even if it’s not immediately familiar.

Susan Stroman won her first Tony Award for the choreography in the original show, yet Marcum adds steps and visual gags she did not attempt. Ludwig keeps the action set in 1930, but turns Crazy into both a tribute and a spoof. Is the snotty but gorgeous rich girl Irene a cliché? Ludwig’s script will eventually invert her.

Indulgent rich boy Bobby Child (Crawford Horton) just wants to dance, but his bossy mother (Leslie Noble) wants him to tend to business. So she sends him to Deadrock to foreclose on a bankrupt theater.

Upon arrival he is immediately rejected by the local beauty, Polly (Brooke Solan), but decides to rescue the theater by impersonating the Broadway producer Bela Zangler by putting on a wig, false mustache and beard. Amazingly, Deadrock is overflowing with performing talent, including dudes who can fake combat with blank-shooting guns and tumble like gymnasts. Even with such advantages, it takes two hours and 40 minutes for Bobby’s plans to negotiate all the reversals.

As popular as Crazy for You has been with audiences, many college companies have shied away from it because so much rides on the talents and energies of the leading man. Lanky junior Crawford Horton brings a kind of Tommy Tune persona to Bobby Child, whose arms and legs can swing like semaphores, and also offers the level of inexhaustible energy that few can maintain after age 25. He sings in 13 numbers, with solos in headliners like the title song and the second-act lament, “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” His native wit and physical dexterity show off best in items like “Slap That Bass.”

Horton’s height presents at least one challenge to director Marcum, when Bobby has to face off with the real Bela Zenger (Matthew Steriti), whom he has been impersonating. It’s a comic shadow-box routine, borrowed from a Marx Brothers

movie, and includes the number “What Causes That.” It works when the two hold off getting too close together.

Matching Horton’s height and abilities, both comic and musical, is versatile Brooke Solan as Polly. In the 1930 show there were two girls in Deadrock, demure Ginger Rogers and raucous Ethel Merman. So Solan’s Polly is both a fighter but also a tender lover, as in the show’s most affecting song, “But Not for Me.” Elsewhere the quality of performance is a testament to how selective the SU Drama program has become. Outstanding are Jack Fortin as the loudmouthed local Lank, and Myles Justise Hayward and Adriana Schaps as eccentric English travelers Eugene and Patricia Fodor. As Irene, flame-haired Zofia Weretka becomes the major scene-stealer by smashing expectations with “Naughty Baby.”

Music director Brian Cimmet, leading a 10-player orchestra on a platform above the action, honors those jewels from the Gershwin songbook, and also takes a role in a well-timed sight gag. Costume designer Kristin Isola works magic tricks to transform Polly from jeans to gown in one scene, and saves her razzmatazz for silver garments on the chorus in the finale.

Across town, Appleseed Productions returns after 18 months of silence to allow veteran player Becky Bottrill the best dramatic role of her career in Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful, running through Oct. 21. Much admired for musical roles, like Always . . . Patsy Cline, Into the Woods and Funny Girl, Bottrill had to put on 20 years to play the role of widowed Carrie Watts. A white wig, geriatric makeup and a rayon dress give her the look, but Bottrill’s angst and pathos are what plumb the depths of character.

Director Tina Lee, who helmed the Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT)-winning The Prisoner of Second Avenue on the same stage, is in top form. Newcomer Hannah L.R. Benedict gives smashing support as the daughter-in-law from hell who can inflict death in a thousand tiny cuts. SNT

IRV LYONS ROARS WITH NAMA NOMINATION Irv Lyons has been a component of the Syracuse music scene for several decades.

For 15 years he’s been part of the searing blues rock of The Ripcords, with Lyons, a left-handed player, ripping his right-handed guitar upside-down.

Now Lyons is hopeful that his recent nomination for the Native American Music Awards (Nammys) will help show the community that he’s more than a lead player and singer: He’s a songwriter, too.

Lyons’ manager, Kimberly Rossi, submitted his 2016 album Doing It All to the awards group in January. The disc made it through thousands of submissions to the next round in July, as listeners voted to secure Lyons’ nomination for “Best Pop”

by August.

Lyons will attend the 17th annual Native American Music Awards show on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino in Niagara Falls. Tickets start at $15 and are available through Ticketmaster.

“I’m honored to be nominated by my peers,” Lyons says. “It’s a national award, so to know I competed against thousands of other people, it blows your mind a little bit. Win or lose, I can go to heaven now.

It’s pretty cool I got nominated.”

Lyons hopes the nomination and potential award will show fans that he’s much more than a guitar player. “I’ve been writing songs since I was a kid,” he says. “I always wanted to do that. I love playing guitar. But writing songs, that’s where my passion really is.”

He grew up listening to his mother’s record collection, featuring Ray Charles, James Brown and other classics. “I would play those records and sing them,” he says. “All I had was that and the radio from 5 years old to senior in high school.

That was my education in how to write music. I learned from the songwriters I heard.”

Lyons also thinks that’s some of the reason people have difficulty categorizing his own music: “I’ve had different influences since I was 5 years old.”

Although Lyons is known for his time with The Ripcords, he has released three solo albums in the past three years, all recorded and produced with Jeff Moleski at Moletrax Studio in Syracuse. “Jeff put together a really good CD for me, production-wise,” he says. “It’s my third one with him and they get better and better.

He understands my sound. He did great.

I’d love to win it for Jeff.”

Yet he recognizes the impact The Ripcords — also featuring Rex Lyons, Jay Gould, Scott Ebner and Steve Palumbo — have had, even on his solo efforts.

“The Ripcords support me and I support them,” Lyons says. “I’ve played with them for 15 years and I’m very thankful for having the opportunity. Their influence has influenced my writing, too.

They’ve introduced me to different types of music I’d never played before. That’s been an education.”

Lyons also credits manager Rossi for getting him here in the first place. “I would have never even thought to send my stuff to the Native American Music Awards,” he says. “She’s my No. 1 supporter and a great PR person and manager for me. She’s been my No. 1 fan and the most tenacious person when it comes to putting my music out there. She did it.”

Although Lyons was nominated with The Ripcords several years ago for their album VooDoo Girl, this Nammy nom marks his first as a solo artist.

“I was in the Army for 20 years,” he says. “I never got to play music. Now I’m living what I want to do and it’s great.

It took a long time, but now I’m writing music all the time. It’s what I love to do.

I would love for people to recognize me as this: ‘OK, Irv’s not just a guitarist and vocalist. He writes songs, too.’”

SU Art Galleries has scheduled extensive programming in connection with Meant To Be Shared. The Wednesday lunchtime lectures at 12:15 p.m. will cover the Giovanni Battista Piranesi artworks on Oct. 11; Goya’s work on Oct. 25; and the French prints on Nov. 8. A special program for children and families will be held on Oct. 21 and 22 at 2 p.m. All programs are free and open to the public.

Politics as usual: Honore Daumier’s “The Legislative Belly” (1834), on display at SU Art Galleries.

GOYA, PICASSO AND MORE IN A DAZZLING SU ART SHOW The No. 1 exhibit at SU Art Galleries this fall is unquestionably a large undertaking. Meant To Be Shared: Selections from the Arthur Ross Collection of Prints at the Yale University Art Collection not only displays dozens of prints. It also spans three centuries, moves from Italy to Spain to France, and explores subjects including architecture, bullfighting and the horrors of war. And it presents a bunch of etchings, aquatints, lithographs and other pieces.

Too much to be comfortably digested?

Hardly. The show is divided into specific segments and has detailed captions accompanying the artworks.

First, it showcases prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, which focus on ancient and 18th-century Rome. Look for his work depicting the Piazza of St. Peter’s in the Vatican and his “Prisons” series portraying imaginary buildings.

While there are many prints portraying temples, columns and pantheons, Meant To Be Shared does encompass other topics. Francesco Piranesi’s beautiful print depicts fireworks, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s “Flight into Egypt” references

a Biblical narrative: the escape of Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus from persecution.

Next, the exhibition presents prints by Francisco Goya, a Spanish artist who lived through turbulent times. French troops invaded Spain and massacred many civilians, French and British troops fought on Spanish soil during the socalled “Peninsular War,” and the return of the monarchy signaled the beginning of an era of harsh political repression.

Goya both satirized societal mores and railed against the tragedy of warfare. In “This Is What You Were Born For,” a man stumbles near a pile of corpses; it’s clear that he will be the next to die. “Against The Common Good” portrays a creature writing in a book as citizens beg him for mercy. In “Barbarians,” soldiers make war against everyday people. Goya’s “Disasters of War” etchings weren’t printed and exhibited during his lifetime because he feared retribution by the king’s agents.

In addition, the show presents prints

by Goya and Pablo Picasso delving into many aspects of bullfighting. Picasso’s

“The Tossing” shows a bullfighter thrust into the air.

A third section features a group of French artists whose influence extends well beyond their lifetimes. For example, Honore Daumier’s caricatures predated political cartoons and the general realm of political satire. He took aim at a variety of targets, including King Louis-Philippe, who is depicted as a clown in one print.

Another work, titled “The Legislative Belly,” portrays an assembly of 35 French legislators; they are inactive, ineffective, useless.

Beyond that, several prints document illustrations used in books or magazines.

These include Edouard Manet’s works used in “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe, Eugene Delacroix’s illustrations depicting scenes from Hamlet, and a magazine cover done by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

And there are other notable artworks created by French artists. The show presents Henri Matisse’s lithograph, “Dancer on a Stool,” Manet’s color lithograph, “Pollichelle,” and a landscape

by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. The exhibition is only sampling their artworks, but it does a nice job of integrating work by various well-known artists.

Happy Returns Laurence Segal recycles bottles and cans to raise funds for breast cancer research

By David Armelino You’ve probably seen Laurence Segal around town. He’s the guy who hauls those big, pink recycling bins around Central New York, including stops at the recent New York State Fair — all 13 days of it — and at Destiny USA. Segal, who grew up and lives in DeWitt, is out collecting empty cans and bottles, much of the time retrieving them from recycling bins, to raise money for breast cancer research. It’s an arduous task, but it doesn’t deter the activist. “I hope it shows people that they can make a difference,” Segal said.

Segal will continue making a difference at Cans for Cancer, to be held at the pink parking lot at Destiny USA on Oct. 28, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., as part of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The inaugural event, spearheaded by Segal, brings together the three main organizations he has donated to over the years: the Upstate Cancer Center, the American Cancer Society and the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund.

Segal hopes for a large turnout of donated bottles and cans. As an incentive, everyone who donates to the cause will receive a coupon book to use at various businesses in the mall.

After the large-scale Cans for Cancer drive has passed, Segal said he will go back to raising money by himself, hopefully with some newfound participants who were inspired by the event.

“Breast cancer doesn’t just go away at the end of October,” Segal said. “It’s to encourage people to bring your bottles and cans throughout the year after this.”

How did you get started collecting bottles?

It’s because of my family’s history of breast cancer: my grandmother, my great-grandmother, my aunts; my great-aunt had colon cancer. Back in 1987, my mom decided to remove both

of her breasts. She met with people in Washington, D.C., and in New York City, and, given her health risk for getting breast cancer, they guaranteed her that she would have it.

It was a difficult decision at the time. When my mom did it, people ostracized her and made fun of her. When Angelina Jolie did it (years later), Beth Baldwin (from the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund) looked at me and said, “They look at her like she’s a hero.” Then she went on a campaign to educate people about breast cancer research, early detection, awareness.

She had complications over the years from that. She’s had several stays at the hospital with almost literally near-death experiences — not from cancer but from her implants leaking.

So the bottle and can drive came out of that. When the Simone family was still at the Syracuse Chiefs, I began to notice around NBT Bank Stadium all of the bottles and cans being thrown in the garbage every night, and it upset me. I said to them, “Do you think we could raise some money for cancer research?” And they said, “Yeah, go for it.” We had a giant pink cart at the top of the stairs, which I ran every night with my friend Jon, and we raised a ton of money for cancer research.

Where do you store all of the bottles?

I have a bottle recycling room at Destiny, and I also keep my pink garbage cans in there. So we bring the bottles back there.

My friend James (Ayers) owns Bottles End on Montrose Avenue in Solvay, and we come and pick them up, or sometimes I’ll put some in my truck and bring them down there. There have been times when it’s built up like crazy, then it takes five people to go empty out the room.

Where do you store them after local events?

At the State Fair, for example, people saw (Segal’s recycling story) on the news, and they brought their bottles and cans from home into the fair, and we’d bag them. I’d keep them at the booth stacked high at the Center of Progress Building.

In addition, we also pull off all of the pop tabs on every can and I donate all of the pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House every week. The aluminum in the can has value in it.

You started out exchanging the bottles at Wegmans.

I still sometimes go there if I have tons of bottles. Typically, 99 percent of the bottles now go to Bottles End just because it makes my life easier. I just really like how James is as a human being. He’s had people in his family who have had cancer.

I also use my friends at Bodow Recycling on Park Street and Hiawatha Boulevard.

Bodow Recycling and Bottles End have just been faithful, loyal and really good.

How did you get involved with the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund?

Carol Baldwin and my mom founded the local chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation years ago. They’re the ones that started the original walk-run in Shoppingtown. They’re the ones who went to Washington, D.C., to meet with Congress back in late 1989 to 1990, with the idea of helping women and men who were facing breast cancer. Now everybody knows about it, but back then it wasn’t spoken about.

When Carol Baldwin started her own fund around 1996, I sort of became directly involved with that. She calls me her fifth son. I’m close to all of the family members. I like that the money that’s raised stays locally. Their motto is “Together We’ll Find A Cure,” and I think that’s how you have to do it. It’s a collaborative effort with all of New York state, all of Central New York. It requires people to contribute every day and to be aware.

How much have you raised as of now?

We have donated more than $50,000 to the Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. Last year I did another $14,500 for the American Cancer Society, and right now we’ve done more than $5,000 from my Real Men Wear Pink campaign. It’s basically a group of men in the community saying they understand that not only (women) can get breast cancer.

How do you decide which cause to donate to?

I donate to Carol Baldwin and American Cancer Society. We’ve also donated some to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation (a fundraiser for children with cancer). We’ve looked at charities that will keep the money locally. A lot of it goes to Upstate

Cancer Center. That’s important. I like the work that they’re doing there.

Whom have you met on this journey?

I met a woman named Rose Fazio out in Chittenango, who literally is disabled, and she was on her hands and knees, crawling.

But she saved bottles for a year out there at her house. She called me again this year and said, “It’s Rose Fazio. Do you remember me?” She’s had tragedy in her family; her daughter has been sick. Yet selflessly, she donated a whole garage (of cans and bottles).

I remember people that I’ve met at the fair who are going through breast cancer who were so sick. I’ve met people at Wegmans who donated their (bottle return) slips. People would come up to me and hand me a $5 bill when I was (collecting bottles) at Delta Sonic car wash in the middle of the cold. I’ve met amazing people who understand what I’m doing and who have selflessly donated and have not bragged to anybody else what they’ve done. It’s not about me, it’s about them caring enough to care about other people.

How are you able to devote so much time to raising money for cancer research?

I worked on The Price Is Right (as a production assistant) with Bob Barker and announcer Rod Roddy for several years (in the 1990s and early 2000s) in Los Angeles. When Rod passed away from cancer, he left me a good amount of money. So I invested it wisely, and I pretty much devote my whole life now to raising funds for cancer research.

I was on that stage every day for years during the tapings. I was involved with writing scripts, picking contestants, everything. Behind the scenes, I stood next to Rod on stage every day. In April 2001, he started having pain during a show. I said, “Are you OK? Do you want me to call an ambulance?” And he said, “Absolutely not. I want to finish the show.”

He went to the hospital after the show and discovered he was anemic, and they started running tests. On Sept. 10, 2001, they did a colonoscopy and discovered he had metastatic colon cancer, and he had emergency surgery on the 9/11 for seven and a half hours. A doctor from the John Wayne Cancer Institute saved his life that day on Sept. 11. He had radiation and chemo following that and another surgery on Sept. 20, 2002. Then he was diagnosed with primary male breast cancer on March 14, 2003.

The summer of 2003 was brutal. I stayed with him the whole time in the hospital in addition to working on The Price Is Right. I went to chemo, I went to radiation, I stayed with him right until the day he died. It was a life-changing experience. He was my best friend, a wonderful person. He promoted early detection at the end of his life: mammograms, colonoscopies. I learned all about that from him.

I had already had breast cancer impact my life. Nobody else was willing to really go to chemo and radiation with him, and I said, “I’ll go with you.” He died on Oct. 27, 2003, at 3:45 in the afternoon; I was with him. It’ll be 14 years (this month) when I turn 40.

I miss him every day. I regret that he wasn’t diagnosed properly and early. The colon cancer, certainly. He put off having a colonoscopy for 13 years. The breast cancer came out of left field and just showed up. He also had prostate cancer that he had been diagnosed with early in 2001, but he hadn’t told anybody.

Part of this bottle drive and raising funds for cancer research is to honor him.

I just think it’s a waste of a life, as are all (cancer-related deaths). It shouldn’t happen in 2017. We need more early detection. People always say to me, “Well, why do we need cans and bottles?

There’s enough dollars for research.” And I always say, “Obviously not.” Cancer doesn’t discriminate: Black or white, rich or poor, young or old, it’s a horrible disease.

You herniated some discs in your back a couple of months ago. How is your back doing?

I saw a great physical therapist, and I’ve had some acupuncture done. I was in very bad shape. It’s better now, but I still have pain every day. I’ve gone back to collecting bottles — slowly. I’m very careful in the way I reach into the cans and careful how I bend my knees. I’m not leaning over.

What kinds of bottles do you see the most?

People always say that the economy stinks, and I always laugh. I can tell you that Coca-Cola is not going out of business, neither is Pepsi, neither is Budweiser. To be honest, I see water bottles the most. Ever since the water bottle bill went into effect in 2008, I see a ton of Wegmans bottles, Aldi bottles, Price Chopper bottles.

Sadly, I also see a lot of beer cans. I say sadly because I always hear there’s no money for cancer research, yet people have all this money to buy premium alcohol, which costs all of this money.

So if they have money for alcohol, they probably have money to donate to cancer research. I see tons of Budweiser cans, Coors Lite, Miller Lite.

A better bottle bill needs to be passed for all of New York state. It’s silly to throw one type of bottle in the garbage and recycle another type. I say to New York state, Why are only certain cans recyclable? They say, “Oh, because it’s carbonated and this one’s not.” It doesn’t make a difference. A bottle is a bottle, plastic is plastic, a can is a can.

I see a lot of 1911 (cider), AriZona (iced tea), Monster (energy drink), and I see a ton of Gatorade and Powerade, too,

which is why a better bottle bill needs to be passed.

What do you do with the bottles that aren’t recyclable?

I’ll bring them down to James. There’s a company that picks them up from him.

But essentially there can’t be a donation made at that point for research. He gets a small amount from the recycling company to take those bottles. So are they getting recycled somewhere or another? Yes. But there should be a better bottle law, and it should cover everything. They do it in Maine, California, Hawaii. It’s non-excusable that it doesn’t happen here.

I’ve met with people in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office and we’re going to have to go back and lobby some more, but I’m willing to do it. You just have to convince Democrats and Republicans to come together (laughs), that it’s for the betterment of the state and to pass the law.

We’re closer than we were before, and they understand.

Have you accomplished what you initially set out to?

I’ve made people aware of early detection, we’ve raised awareness for breast cancer and for all of cancer. I think it’s been effective. I know we’ve certainly helped the environment.

The bottles and cans don’t really mean anything to me. It just represents another 6 cents for cancer research. I hope, if anything, they represent hope and inspiration.

People always go, “Why bottles and cans?” Well, it’s just to show people how much money is thrown away in Syracuse every day. I see it every day, no matter what gas station I go to, whether it’s vacuumed up at Delta Sonic every day, or it’s thrown away in the garbage. All of that money could go to cancer research. So I hope that point gets through to people.

How long will you continue to do this?

I’m going to go for as long as my health allows me to, and after that, I think I have a significant amount of people now, like almost my own little army, that will go out there and fight for it. I know people who will donate their time, no matter what.

My goal doesn’t necessarily have to be with bottles and cans. If some business wants to come forward and make a big donation to cancer research, I’d love it.

Delta Sonic did that last year; they made a $10,000 donation to Carol Baldwin in my name. So if a business thinks cancer research is worthwhile, and they want to make a tax-deductible donation and say, “Hey, I like what Laurence is doing,” I’m all for it. I want it to happen around the country.

There’s plenty of money for cancer research because it exists. I encourage people, don’t throw money in the garbage.

I just think that’s crazy. SNT

BULLISH ORANGE HOPES TO DECLAW CLEMSON TIGERS In the moments following the Syracuse University football team’s 27-24 homecoming win over Pittsburgh Oct. 7 at the Carrier Dome, an excited and still ampedup Orange cornerback Scoop Bradshaw was asked about this week’s game with the defending national champions, the Clemson Tigers. In a 28-second answer, Bradshaw said he “can’t wait” four times.

“I can’t wait to play them. Last year it was bad (a 54-0 loss at Clemson), but this year it’s going to be our statement game,” said Bradshaw, a sophomore from Tampa.

“I can’t wait to play those guys.

“I’ve been waiting for this all year. I’ve been telling my family back home and they’re coming up for this game,” he continued. “I can’t wait. This game has been on my mind since last year. I can’t wait to play those guys.”

Bradshaw’s enthusiasm was real and refreshing, and if it has spread through the rest of the team the No. 2-ranked Tigers (6-0) could have their hands full when they face the improving Orange (3-3) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at the Dome.

It’s the ninth time since the Associated Press poll was created in 1936 that the Orange will face the defending national champion and just the fifth time at the Dome. The Orange’s most recent game against a defending national champ was a 38-20 loss to Florida State at the Dome in 2014.

For the Tigers, who trail only No. 1 Alabama in the AP and Coaches’ polls, Friday’s game is another step toward a national championship rematch with the Crimson Tide — a game Clemson rallied to win 35-31.

For the Orange, it’s another opportunity to knock off a ranked opponent and, as Bradshaw said, make a statement that Syracuse football can be a force in the ACC. And while Clemson is the best team SU will face this season, playing the game on a Friday night in Syracuse gives the Orange an advantage it won’t have when it visits No. 11 Miami, Florida State and Louisville in three of the next four games after Friday’s game.

For what it’s worth, the Friday-night game has put Clemson coach Dabo Swinney in a foul mood because he’s going to miss his son’s high school game.

“I’m not a fan of it. I’m really not,” Swinney told The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C. “I’ve got a son playing Friday night at the same time I’m coaching. I really hate that I can’t be there for that. I’m not a big fan of it, but just kind of the way it is. TV kind of dictates all that stuff, but I certainly am not a fan. I prefer Saturday nights.”

Syracuse will need to finish 6-6 for a guaranteed bowl invitation, so to reach a bowl it will need to win at least one game out of the Clemson-Miami-Florida State-Louisville gauntlet while also beating Wake Forest and Boston College at the Dome.

“Clemson has a great team; it’s definitely going to be a challenge,” said sophomore wide receiver Devin C. Butler, who caught a 32-yard touchdown pass against Pittsburgh. “We’re going to come out and we’re going to compete, and we’re going to play a good game. It’s 11 guys who are going to line up in front of us; they’re a hell of team but we’re just going to play football.”

Clemson remained undefeated Oct. 7 with a 28-14 win over Wake Forest at home. Junior quarterback Kelly Bryant, who replaced star quarterback Deshaun Watson, left that game in the third quarter with an ankle injury. Earlier this week, Swinney said Bryant was day-to-day,

and he wouldn’t say if either redshirt freshman Zerrick Cooper or true freshman Hunter Johnson would start if Bryant couldn’t play.

“We’re not going to get into all that,” Swinney said. “I expect Kelly to be ready to go, but if not, we’ll have a plan, but I’m not going to lay it out for Syracuse.”

Before he was injured Oct. 7, Bryant completed 22 of 29 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown. For the season, he has completed 107 of 159 passes for 1,259 yards and four touchdowns with four interceptions. He also leads the Tigers in rushing with 401 net yards (513 before sacks are subtracted).

While the Tigers’ offense has dropped a notch without Watson (now with the NFL’s Houston Texans), the defense has been dominant. Led by senior Dorian O’Daniel (a team-high 48 tackles with two and a half sacks and two interceptions returned for touchdowns), the Tigers rank among the nation’s leaders in scoring defense (fifth at 11.3 points per game) and total defense (eighth at 264.3 yards per game).

And, remarkably, no team has scored more than seven points against Clemson through the first three quarters, as the Tigers have allowed just two touchdowns over the first three quarters in their six games.

The Orange offense, which has sputtered in the first half for the past three games, will need to change that trend against one of the nation’s best defenses if it’s going to have a chance for an upset.

“We know we have to step our game up, (with the) national champions coming in,” said senior wide receiver Erv Phillips.

“But at the end of the day, it’s another game with a great opponent and we have to step up our level of play. We did well (against Pittsburgh), but I think there’s a lot of things we can clean up.”

In its first seven possessions against Pittsburgh, the Orange scored only three points on Cole Murphy’s 26-yard field goal. But starting with its last drive of the first half, the Orange scored three touchdowns and a field goal on its next four possessions to build a 27-16 lead.

Offensively, there were two positive signs. With the Panthers focused on stopping standout wide receivers Phillips and Steve Ishmael, Butler and junior tight end Ravian Pierce had their best games of the season by combining for 16 catches for 163 yards and Butler’s touchdown. And the running game finally showed some life as the Orange rushed for more than 100 yards in the second half behind senior running back Dontae Strickland, who ran for a season-high 80 yards.

In snapping a four-game losing streak against the Panthers, the Orange reached the 500-yard mark in total offense for the third time this season as quarterback Eric Dungey accounted for 413 of them (365 passing and 48 rushing). Dungey, who tossed two touchdowns, also rushed for one as he tied Bill Hurley and Donovan McNabb for most rushing touchdowns by a SU quarterback (19).

“We really changed up practice and tried to do some different things,” Orange coach Dino Babers said. “We tried to lead with the pass and not the run to see if we could loosen it up. It still took us a little time to get going, but once we got going we were a sight to see.”

Defensively, the Orange knocked out Pittsburgh quarterback Max Browne and limited the Panthers to just 3-for-13 on third-down plays. The Orange did lose starting safety Evan Foster with an undisclosed injury in the second quarter and he was replaced by Jordan Martin, a fifth-year graduate transfer from Toledo who had five tackles and two pass breakups. The Orange has already played most of this season without starting free safety Antwan Cordy because of a leg injury.

Martin, who was not with the team for last year’s lopsided loss at Clemson, said Friday’s game will give the Orange an opportunity to “showcase what we can do.”

“Every week we have a chance. Every game has been a dogfight for us; (at) LSU and NC State we didn’t execute those last-minute plays that would give us the lead,” Martin said. “It was good to finish out this game strong (against Pitt) and maybe it’ll carry over to Clemson.” SNT
