THINGS THAT MATTER B y L u k e Pa r s n o w

CANDIDATES AND THEIR ELECTION-SEASON CLICHES

A

uthor and sociologist DaShanne Stokes once said, “Truth is hard. Propaganda is cheap.” Maybe that’s why our politicians — and those who want to be our politicians — spend less time during elections speaking on context and more time on simple phrases that are meaningless clichés. Every candidate, in every party, for every office uses these useless idioms when looking for votes. In preparation for the midterm elections, here are my top 10 most annoying things said by politicians.

10

“ It’s time for both parties to come together.”

Rough translation: “I need voters registered in the other party, as well as independents, so I need to look like I’m from the middle.” Candidates always seem to tout bipartisanship when they are trying court voters. And once they are elected, they join the partisan firestorm that takes place at many levels of government. I guess it’s not yet time?

“I have a plan.”

Many important political issues — poverty, job creation, corruption — have gone unresolved for years or decades. Yet every candidate has a “plan” that will fix them forever. Of course, all they will do is refer to “the plan” during debates or in conversations with the media. Usually they will direct voters to visit their website to see details of these plans. But we should expect candidates to tell us the specifics when we ask for them.

8 7

“That is a good question.”

That is probably why it was asked.

“ This is the most important election in years.”

During the 2008 Election Day TV coverage, someone said it was “perhaps the most exciting and closely watched election in generations.” It’s funny how everyone has said the same exact thing about every election since then. In 2016 someone on TV said it was the most important election. Now you’re telling me that “America is at a crossroads” in 2018 and this is the most crucial election in my lifetime?

10.17.18 - 10.23.18 | syracusenew times.com

Every election is important. Every election is consequential.

6

“I’m running a positive campaign.”

Two of the biggest trademarks of elections in this country are the political attack advertisements and the debates where two candidates criticize each other over issues that matter, and most times, issues that don’t. Gee, I’d hate to see what a negative campaign would look like.

5

“work He works for the donors. I for the people.”

It’s quite annoying how often political candidates love to talk about big money in politics, yet never seem to do anything about it once they’re in office. They describe their opponents as being in bed with donors, Wall Street and the wealthy — yet these candidates are magical pure angels with absolutely nothing but the voters’ interest in mind. News flash: Almost everyone has donors.

4

“I don’t believe in hypotheticals.”

This is a favorite response to questions about possible future events that candidates just don’t want to talk about. Yes, incumbents running for re-election should face questions on their past records. But elections are mostly about what candidates will do if the voters decide to put them in office. Campaigns are all about hypotheticals. Don’t waste our time telling us you don’t believe in them.

3

“I’m not a politician.”

With current disapproval ratings of various government bodies at record lows, candidates

often paint themselves as “the political outsider,” and their opponent as the ultimate insider. The ascent of Donald Trump, someone who had never held elected office, to the presidency has elevated this principle to preposterous levels. If you’ve never held office before, it is true that you are not a politician — but you clearly intend to be one if you are running for office. What is most humorous is when longterm incumbents actually try to claim that they are not politicians. Yeah, right.

2

“I deal with facts, not fiction.”

Yes, the alliteration is cute, and that’s probably the only reason why this phrase is so overused. Show me a politician who has never once told a lie, misrepresented information or exaggerated reality and that person has permission to use this phrase.

1

“Well, look. . . ”

Why is this simple beginning of a sentence the most annoying thing politicians say? Because it is the most popular thing office-seekers use when they are asked questions that should have a simple “yes” or “no” answer. If they are asked “Do you support this?” or “Do you plan to vote for this?” they will pause and say, “Well, look. . .” and then go on a tangent to avoid answering the question. It is the cornerstone of what we call “political spin.” It is true that the complexity of our politics can’t always be answered with a single word. But sometimes we need a straight answer from those in power without all the wishy-washy. Indeed, we could use a lot more of that these days. SNT

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINAL

In Mesa, Arizona, two troopers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety were surprised to find themselves being pulled over on State Route 51 by a black Dodge Charger on July 11. The troopers were in an unmarked Mustang and had spotted the Charger behind them sporting law enforcement-style emergency lights, reported ABC15 Arizona. A check revealed the car was registered to a private citizen, who soon activated his flashing lights and pulled the troopers over. When the (real) troopers approached the Charger, they found 44-year-old Matthew Allen Disbro of Mesa wearing a security uniform and a gun belt with a handgun, cuffs and pepper spray. The car also contained a siren box, police radio and a vest with a baton and knife. Disbro was arrested for impersonating an officer.

UNDIGNIFIED BEHAVIOR

City Councilwoman Carol S. Fowler, 48, of Huron, Kansas, made a splash in the news when Atchison County Sheriff’s deputies tried to arrest her on June 29 for failure to appear on an outstanding warrant. Fowler put up such a fight deputies had to use their tasers on her, and she was arrested for interference and battery on a law enforcement officer. But Fowler was just getting started, according to the Atchison Globe. On July 2, as jail workers tried to remove her jewelry and personal items, Fowler bit one of them on the thumb hard enough to break the bone. Fowler now faces three felony charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and a charge of interference with a law enforcement officer.

FOX-40 reported that King underwent three hours of surgery, after which doctors told him his belly fat had saved him from worse injury. King believes karma kept him alive: “Back in the 1970s, I had pulled a lady out of a burning building, so now I think I’m being paid back, by not dying,” King said.

COMPELLING EXPLANATION

A 62-year-old security guard named Ramdin in the city of Kanpur, India, told doctors he was robbed in June of about $722 (proceeds from the sale of his motorbike) by muggers who attacked him and knocked him out. When he woke up, Ramdin was suffering from severe abdominal pain, which brought him, 10 days later, to Rama Hospital, where a scan revealed a steel cup lodged in his abdomen. Senior surgeon Dr. Dinesh Kumar told Metro News: “It seems that the metal cup was inserted into Ramdin’s rectum by the goons, and it got stuck near the intestines.” Doctors couldn’t remove the cup using the route it went in, so they

GUT FEELING

Walt Dean King, 69, just wanted to take a look at a used car for sale on July 4. But when he approached the vehicle in the small California town of Tracy, about 60 miles east of San Francisco, he was suddenly knocked off his feet by a bull that had gotten loose. King felt the bull’s horn go through his side and crawled between a bush and a house as the bull stood over him snorting for about 20 minutes.

had to operate. Ramdin was discharged from the hospital on July 4.

HAMBURGLAR’S DELIGHT

In what can only be a testament to curiosity, a Staffa, Ontario, Canada, man has created an eBay listing for the McDonald’s meal he placed on a shelf in his home six years ago to see what would happen. CBC Radio reported on July 5 that Dave Alexander also set aside a homemade burger and fries, five years ago, in order to make a comparison. The McDonald’s meal held up much better: “The fries are stunningly good looking,” Alexander said. “The burger itself has darkened a little bit. The bun is about as hard as a hockey puck, but it looks just like it’s brand-new cosmetically.” Alexander is downsizing and listed the meal — “original owner, never eaten” — for $29.99. “We live in the country and we’ve never seen a fly land on it. Ever,” he said.

wall, Ontario, Canada, Walmart in late June, an unnamed woman returned to the parking lot and drove off in the black rental car she had just picked up. Two weeks later, when she returned the car to the rental agency, she complained about the car’s messy condition and the set of golf clubs left in it. Nation Valley News reported the “slightly confused” manager informed her the car she had rented was a Nissan Sentra, but the car she returned was an Infiniti. Sure enough, the Infiniti owner had reported his car stolen from the Walmart parking lot, and when the woman and the agency manager returned to the lot, the Nissan was still parked there. The Infiniti owner got his car back, the woman was a “wee bit embarrassed,” and the Cornwall Community Police Service reported on July 8 that there was a “happy and funny ending to the story.” They also urged citizens to “not leave your key fobs in your vehicle when not being operated.”

FRUIT OF LABOR

San Diego photographer Mike Sakasegawa prides himself on seeing the beauty in mundane objects, The Washington Post reports. But something about his latest subject took social media by storm. On July 11, as Sakasegawa returned home from his morning run, he noticed a round, yellow object rolling down the street. “I thought it was a tennis ball or something,” he said, but in fact it was a lemon. So he did what any self-respecting photographer would do: He captured video of the fruit as it continued its journey to the bottom of the hill, then posted his 1.5-minute documentary to Twitter. Within 24 hours the video racked up more than 2.5 million views. “I post stuff that’s similar to this all the time,” Sakasegawa said. “Most of the time, it floats on by.” By the next day, the lemon video had gained more than 100,000 likes, was retweeted tens of thousands of times, and a literary agent had contacted Sakasegawa, wondering if he’d like to make the lemon into a children’s book.

SUNSHINE STATE

Indian River County (Florida) sheriff’s officers stopped Earle Stevens Jr., 69, on June 27 after another driver called 911, complaining that Stevens’ Mercury

Grand Marquis kept tapping her bumper in a McDonald’s drive-thru lane. The officers noted “a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. His speech was slurred and his eyes were red and glossy.” He also had an open bottle of Jim Beam bourbon in a brown paper bag on the passenger seat. Stevens, of Vero Beach, struggled to produce his ID and said he’s never had a valid Florida driver’s license, according to Treasure Coast Newspapers. He also explained he was not drinking while driving, only when he stopped for stop signs and traffic signals. After failing several field sobriety tests and a breath test, Stevens was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a license.

texted me and asked me to go out,” Pugh told WREG-TV. They took her car and stopped at a gas station, where Griffin asked Pugh to go inside and buy him a cigar. But while she was inside, “He drove off. I came outside and my car was gone,” Pugh said. Shortly, Pugh received a text from her godsister, telling her Griffin had just asked her out on a date. He picked up the godsister in Pugh’s car and headed to a drive-in movie. “He didn’t even have any money,” Pugh said. “She actually paid their way to get in the drive-in just so I could get my car back.” Pugh alerted the police to the car’s location, and they arrested Griffin for theft of property. “I hope he’s in jail for a long time,” Pugh said.

MYSTERY SOLVED

Faith Pugh of Memphis, Tennessee, had a date to remember on July 14 with Kelton Griffin. Her casual acquaintance from high school “just out of the blue

On Jan. 25, 71-year-old Alan J. Abrahamson of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, went for his regular pre-dawn walk to Starbucks. What happened on the

way stumped police investigators until March, reported The Washington Post, and on July 13 they made their findings public. Images from a surveillance camera show Abrahamson walking out of his community at 5:35 a.m. and about a half-hour later, the sound of a gunshot is heard. Just before 7 a.m., a dog found Abrahamson’s body, lying near a walking path. Police found no weapon, no signs of a struggle; he still had his wallet and phone. Investigators initially worked the case as a homicide, but as they dug deeper into the man’s computer searches and purchases over the past nine years, a theory developed: Abrahamson had tied a gun to a weather balloon filled with helium, shot himself, and then the gun drifted away to parts unknown. A thin line of blood on Abrahamson’s sweatshirt indicated to police that “something with the approximate width of a string passed through the blood on the outside of the shirt,” the final report says. As for

the balloon, investigators said it would likely have ascended to about 100,000 feet and exploded somewhere north of the Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean.

REVENGE, TEXAS-STYLE

The Austin American-Statesman reported that on June 17, RV park neighbors and longtime adversaries Ryan Felton Sauter, 39, and Keith Monroe got into a heated dispute about an undisclosed subject. Later that day, Monroe saw Sauter leaving Monroe’s RV and asked him why he had gone in without permission, to which Sauter replied, “You’ll see why.” Going inside, Monroe soon spotted a 3-foot-long rattlesnake. “I freaked out,” he said. He used a machete to kill the snake, which strangely was missing its rattles. Turns out Sauter had bitten off the snake’s tail, with its signature warning sound. Sauter has been charged with deadly conduct and criminal trespass.

FAIRY TALES AND JAILHOUSE WAILS IN TWO ATYPICAL TUNERS

As the most family-friendly show in Stephen Sondheim’s anxiety-ridden output, Into the Woods is produced quite often these days, 30 years after its opening. Good thing, too. For the season opener from the students of the Syracuse University Drama Department (running through Sunday, Oct. 21), director David Lowenstein is counting on audiences already being familiar with the four parallel plot lines: the three fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel and Jack and the Beanstalk and the invented linking story of the Baker and his wife. Lowenstein is also expecting audiences to remember the production history of Woods, which usually emphasizes the lyrical and the whimsical. That’s because he’s going to blow all of that up before our eyes. Program notes tell us that the setting is a bombed-out building in the midst of a military conflict in the not-so-distant future. Jessica Ford’s set design suggests

recent reports from Syria or Yemen. The 24-member cast flees in from the wings, hides among the remaining walls, and appears to divert themselves by telling stories. All are in random street clothes: one young man in an athletic jacket, a tall woman with a head scarf, and most with no ethnic or class markers. The patriarchal Narrator, played by a self-assured Dick Cavett in the original, has been banished. In his place are three young women, Victoria Madden, Kristen Brown and Grace Gentile, one in a New York State Police uniform, the other two with laminated ID cards to imply they are working girls. None ever preaches or condescends. Lowenstein’s take on the show might be mistaken for a deconstruction. Yet he avoids the excesses of the post-modernism found in revisionist revivals from 20 years ago. Lowenstein ultimately honors Sondheim’s music and lyrics and James Lapine’s book: He just wants us to en-

counter them anew. Music director Brian Cimmet is playing no tricks, either, so that the solo from the adulterous Baker’s Wife (Madi Beumee), “Moments in the Woods,” brings down the house for all the right reasons. The director’s riotous inventiveness never fails him throughout the nearly three-hour production, with a gag or a visual flourish coming reliably about every minute and a half. Every member of the large cast gets a solo moment, too, with a dance step or musical flair. Even the actor in one of the least rewarding roles, Milky White the Cow (Noah Lentini), gets extended time in the spotlight. This was done for the art of it, but every parent who travels to see a child perform will have a heart-thumping moment. The role that will cause the most comment is Lowenstein’s innovation with the Witch, a choice role in any production. Stephanie Craven comes on as Kate McKinnon doing Jeff Sessions on Satur-

day Night Live, in a blue suit, red tie and required flag lapel pin. It’s the most audacious directorial call seen on any stage all year. At the end of the first act the Witch turns into a more benign figure, another persona from the McKinnon repertory, and it’s too much fun to be spoiled here. Among other highlights, Rapunzel (Brooke Solan) lets down her hair guided by an electronic pulley, as it forms a yellow ladder. The two Princes for Cinderella and Rapunzel, played by Marckus Blair and Caleb James Grochalski, warble the duet “Agony” with microphones like Las Vegas lounge lizards. Cinderella’s Stepmother (Emma Vielbig) never stops taking selfies, and her daughters, Florinda (Emily Britt) and Lucinda (Shanel Bailey), make the prominent displays of T&A a comic turnoff. All told, SU Drama’s Into the Woods is a Helzapoppin’ of ingenious invention. The likewise unusual musical running through Oct. 27 on the Central New York Playhouse stage is John Kander and Fred Ebb’s Kiss of the Spider Woman. The show, which features a book by Terence McNally, won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 1993 and ran for 904 performances. Somehow, though, it is making its debut on local boards only 25 years later. Whatever the reluctance to stage it has nothing to do with the score, which contains several compelling discoveries. This Spider Woman should not be confused with the non-musical play of the same title that Argentine writer Manuel Puig based from his 1976 novel, a work composed only of dialogue. The now-defunct Simply New Company performed the non-musical version with Tom Quinn and Jordan Glaski in April 2007, causing much comment. These three should be kept separate from director Hector Babenco’s 1985 movie of the same title that won William Hurt his only Academy Award. All four differ in conception and plot details, which shall not detain us here. Part of what makes Kiss a hard sell is that it’s a brutal prison story, even while being a dance show. Choreographer Shannon Tompkins has assembled the beefiest, heaviest male chorus seen anywhere in recent years. These comprise the guards and other prisoners, who regularly treat each other roughly. the prop demands met by producer Leila Dean is an ample supply of stage blood. Under the scowling gaze of the barking Warden (Eric Feldstein), Marxist revolutionary Valentin (Liam Fitzpatrick) of peasant background finds himself thrust into a prison with the effete Luis Molina (Nic MacLane), a window dresser. Molina knows the ropes from time served but he has eight years to go. His crime was “corrupting a minor,” i.e. homosexual advance, which has no political dimension. Valentin despises Molina more for his political irrelevance than his gayness, but wants nothing to do with him in any case. For three years Molina has coped with the ever-present threat of humiliation and torture by fantasizing about old movies, focusing on a period diva in black hair named Aurora (Erin Sills), who played many roles. One that fascinates him most, even as it fills him with dread, is the Spider Woman (Erin Sills), whose kiss brings death. Although clearly a creature of Molina’s imagination, she is treated differently across the four ver-

sions of the story. Here she is present in eye-filling costumes designed by director Abel Searor and handled specially by Donnie Williams. When Molina learns that his aging Mother (Patricia Catchouny) is ailing, he asks that she be allowed to visit. The price for this favor is delivering the name of Valentin’s girlfriend, which is Marta (Taylor Peck). Their resultant quartet, “Dear One,” celebrating two quite different kinds of love, is so moving that it justifies Searor’s labor of love to get Kiss on a local stage at last. Veteran singer Erin Sills has never been better, not even in Evita, and dominates the scene dramatically and musically, especially the second act’s title number. Liam Fitzpatrick, cast against type, is bearish and caustic. But it’s lean, leading-man handsome Nic MacLane who breaks new ground as an epicene tragic fool. His cinema-inspired post-execution dance of death fulfills one of director Searor’s most inspired conceptions. SNT

A Cortland farm harvests hemp for its health benefits

12

BY MARGARET McCORMICK

W

hen Allan Gandelman launched Main Street Farms in 2011, his chief goal was to help people eat better. These days, he wants to help people feel better, too.

Last year, Gandelman and farm operations manager Karli Miller-Hornick partnered to form a new company, called Head + Heal, at the farm near Cortland. Their goal: Grow hemp and process it to make and sell CBD oil, which has gained fans in recent years for its health benefits and natural healing properties. Last spring the Main Street Farms team planted several varieties of hemp on about 15 of the farm’s 50 acres. They are one of the first farms in New York state licensed to grow and process hemp under the Industrial Hemp Research Pilot Program. Their first harvest is under way and will continue until the first frost. Next spring, they’ll do it all over again. “We look at it as diversifying the crops we grow,” Gandelman says. “We look at hemp as part of our crop rotation and a way to diversify our income. This is like our ‘value-added product.’ We really wanted people to be able to buy something from ‘seed to bottle’ and trace the plant back to us and know that it’s safe.” 10.17.18 - 10.23.18 | syracusenew times.com

Hemp is a tall, leafy green cannabis plant that looks and smells like its cousin, marijuana. CBD is short for cannabinoid, a chemical compound found in cannabis. It is similar to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. THC causes the “high” that’s associated with marijuana. But CBD is not psychoactive. For that reason, CBD has gained momentum in the world of health and wellness — and health and wellness products. CBD is believed to relieve pain, reduce stress, anxiety and depression, and promote an overall sense of wellbeing. It may reduce cancer symptoms and symptoms related to cancer treatment, alleviate acne and improve heart function and health. CBD can also be used to treat pain, inflammation and anxiety in pets. CBD oil, or tincture, is made by drying the hemp plants, extracting the CBD and diluting it with an oil, such as coconut oil. It’s dark brown and has an earthy flavor that for some is an acquired taste. Many people take it under the tongue, for

quicker absorption. CBD is also added to salves, which can be applied to the skin to treat wounds and soothe muscle aches and pains. Head + Heal offers several of those, too. Both Miller-Hornick and Gandelman have personal experience with CBD. Miller-Hornick says she uses the oil several times a day to help relieve anxiety. Gandelman started taking CBD oil several years ago when he developed Lyme disease and the debilitating symptoms that came with it: fatigue, insomnia, achy, stiff and swollen joints, and cognitive issues, including memory loss. At the time, doctors suggested he begin a six-month round of antibiotics. Meanwhile, a friend had sent him some CBD oil. He started taking it regularly and found that it relieved his pain. “I still take CBD oil three times a day,” Gandelman says. “It really increases the quality of life for me.” There is a stigma that surrounds hemp and CBD. The most common questions people ask when they see CBD oil for sale at the Main Street Farms stall at the Central New York Regional Market on Saturdays are: Does it get you high? And do you need a prescription? The answer to both questions is no. Response to the oil, available in two strengths (600 mg and 1,200 mg) has been overwhelmingly positive. “The response has blown our minds,” Miller-Hornick says. “With no marketing whatsoever our sales at the farmers market have doubled every month. CBD has been an answer for many people. The testimonials we hear are really powerful.” Arleen Hyland lives near Rochester and manages the city’s 311 Call Center, a busy workplace that can leave the nerves a bit jangled at times. After doing some research, she started taking a small amount of Head + Heal CBD several times a day and says it has a calming effect on her. “I feel more relaxed. . . it gives me a type of peace,” she says. “Maybe it’s my imagination, but I don’t think so. It just gives me a sense of ease.” For those who are interested and have never tried CBD, Head + Heal recommends that people start with the 600 mg oil ($40 per bottle) and take a dropper-ful several times a day. Results are not the same in everyone. Gandelman and Miller-Hornick recommend that people finish a full bottle and evaluate how it’s working before increasing dosage to the 1,200 mg oil ($70), if needed. “There is no one product that works for everyone,” Gandelman says. “The

Allan Gandelman, left, and Karli Miller-Hornick, right, who run Head + Heal out of Main Street Farms, both have personal experience using CBD oil (facing page). Gandelman uses it to treat symptoms of Lyme disease, and Miller-Hornick uses it to treat anxiety. Michael Davis photo

important thing is to take it consistently, finish the bottle and give it some time. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a lowcost thing to add to your health regimen.” Head + Heal CBD products can be purchased at Green Planet Grocery, 3514

W. Genesee St.; Syracuse Cooperative Market, 618 Kensington Road; and the Local Food Market, 37 N. Main St., Cortland. They’re also available online at mainstreetfarms.com and headandheal. com, and on Saturdays at the Main Street

Farms stand at the Central New York Regional Market. SNT Margaret McCormick is a freelance writer and editor in Syracuse. She blogs about food at eatfirst.typepad. com. Follow her on Twitter, connect on Facebook or email her at mmccormicksnt@gmail.com.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19) Humraaz is a word

in the Urdu language. Its literal meaning is “secret sharer.” It refers to a confidante, a person in whom you have full trust and to whom you can confess your core feelings. Is there such a character in your life? If so, seek him or her out for assistance in probing into the educational mysteries you have waded into. If there is no such helper you can call on, I advise you to do whatever is necessary to attract him or her into your sphere. A collaborative quest may be the key to activating sleeping reserves of your soul wisdom.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus author

Roberto Bolaño suggests that the world contains more beauty than many people realize. The full scope and intensity of this nourishing beauty “is only visible to those who love.” When he speaks of “those who love,” I suspect he means deep-feeling devotees of kindness and compassion, hard-working servants of the greater good, and free-thinking practitioners of the Golden Rule. In any case, Taurus, I believe you’re in a phase when you have the potential to see far more of the world’s beauty. For best results, supercharge your capacity to give and receive love.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Once upon a time

you were walking along a sidewalk when a fairy floated by and whispered, “I’m willing to grant you three wishy-washy wishes for free. You don’t have to do any favors for me in return. But I will grant you three wonderfully wise wishes if you perform three tasks for me.” You asked the fairy, “What would those three tasks be?” She replied, “The second task is that you must hoodwink the devil into allowing you to shave his hairy legs. The third task is that you must bamboozle God into allowing you to shave his bushy beard.” You laughed and said, “What’s the first task?” The fairy touched you on the nose with her tiny wand and said, “You must believe that the best way to achieve the impossible is to attempt the absurd.”

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You Crabs tend to be the stockpilers and hoarders of the zodiac. The world’s largest collections of antique door knobs and Chinese restaurant menus and beer cans from the 1960s belong to Cancerian accumulators. But in alignment with possibilities hinted at by current astrological omens, I recommend that you redirect this inclination so it serves you better. How? One way would be to gather supplies of precious stuff that’s really useful to you. Another way would be to assemble a batch of blessings to bestow on people and animals who provide you with support. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Chinese mythology

tells us there used to be 10 suns, all born from the mother goddess Xi He. Every 24 hours, she bathed her brood in the lake and placed them in a giant mulberry tree. From there, one sun glided out into the sky to begin the day while the other nine remained behind. It was a good arrangement. The week had 10 days back then, and each sun got its turn to shine. But the siblings eventually grew restless with the staid rhythm. On one fateful morning, with a playful flourish, they all soared into the heavens at once. It was fun for them, but the earth grew so hot that nothing would grow. To the rescue came the archer Hou Yi. With his flawless aim, he used his arrows to shoot down nine of the suns, leaving one to provide just the right amount of light and warmth. The old tales don’t tell us, but I speculate that Hou Yi was a Leo.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You now have max-

imum command of a capacity that’s a great strength but also a potential liability: your piercing brainpower. To help ensure that you wield this asset in ways that empower you and don’t sabotage you, here’s advice from four wise Virgos. 1. “Thought can organize the world so well that you are no longer able to see it.” : psychotherapist Anthony de Mello. 2. “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.” : poet Mary Oliver. 3. “I like to wake up each

morning and not know what I think, that I may reinvent myself in some way.” : actor and writer Stephen Fry. 4. “I wanted space to watch things grow.” : singer Florence Welch.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “There are works

which wait, and which one does not understand for a long time,” wrote Libran author Oscar Wilde. “The reason is that they bring answers to questions which have not yet been raised; for the question often arrives a long time after the answer.” That’s the weird news, Libra. You have been waiting and waiting to understand a project that you set in motion many moons ago. It has been frustrating to give so much energy to a goal that has sometimes confused you. But here’s the good news: Soon you will finally formulate the question your project has been the answer to. And so at last you will understand it. You’ll feel vindicated, illuminated and resolved.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Many seekers

who read horoscope columns want common-sense advice about love, career, money and power. So I hope I don’t disappoint you by predicting that you will soon have a mystical experience or spiritual epiphany. Let me add, however, that this delightful surprise won’t merely be an entertaining diversion with no useful application. In fact, I suspect it will have the potential of inspiring good ideas about love, career, money or power. If I had to give the next chapter of your life story a title, it might be “A Thousand Dollars’ Worth of Practical Magic.”

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) In 1962, when she was 31 years old, Sagittarian actress Rita Moreno won an Academy Award for her role in the film West Side Story. In 2018, she attended the Oscars again, sporting the same dress she’d worn for the ceremony 56 years before. I think the coming weeks will be a great time for you, too, to reprise a splashy event or two from the past. You’ll generate soul power by reconnecting with your roots. You’ll tonify and harmonize your mental health by establishing a symbolic link with your earlier self.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The Commit-

tee to Reward Unsung Good Deeds hereby acknowledges your meritorious service in the trenches of the daily routine. We praise your tireless efforts to make life less chaotic and more coherent for everyone around you. We’re grateful for the patience and poise you demonstrate as you babysit adults who act like children. And we are gratified by your capacity to keep long-term projects on track in the face of trivial diversions and petty complaints. I know it’s a lot to ask, but could you please intensify your vigilance in the next three weeks? We need your steadiness more than ever.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You need a

special pep talk that’s best provided by Aquarian poet Audre Lorde. Please meditate on these four quotes by her. 1. “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation. 2. “We have been raised to fear the yes within ourselves, our deepest cravings.” 3. “You cannot use someone else’s fire. You can only use your own. To do that, you must first be willing to believe you have it.” 4. “Nothing I accept about myself can be used against me to diminish me.” 5. “The learning process is something you can literally incite, like a riot.”

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Warning: My horo-

scopes may interfere with your ability to rationalize your delusions; they could extinguish your enthusiasm for clichés; they might cause you to stop repressing urges that you really should express; and they may influence you to cultivate the state of awareness known as “playful wisdom.” Do you really want to risk being exposed to such lavish amounts of inner freedom? If not, you should stop reading now. But if you’re as ripe for emancipating adventures as I think you are, then get started on shedding any attitudes and influences that might dampen your urge to romp and cavort and carouse.
