Driving Lesson

In Green Bay, Wisc., a driver crossing the Walnut Street Bridge on June 22 disregarded the traffic arm and drove around it onto the drawbridge as it was opening. His van ascended the opening span, but then rolled back down into the gap between the stationary bridge and the moveable span. Green Bay Metro firefighters, concerned that the van might slip through the gap, cut a hole in its roof to rescue the driver.

Precocious

Residents of Baraboo, Wisc., must have done a double-take when they looked outside during the early hours of June 30. Kelly, a full-grown elephant, had escaped from the Circus World Museum nearby and wandered the neighborhood, munching on marigolds.

Apparently, her elephant partner, Isla, had used her trunk to free Kelly from a restraint. A trainer from Circus World was summoned, and Kelly was returned to her home at the museum.

Smooth Reaction

Anger over spilled sugar led a Blue Springs, Mo., grandfather to a chilly end when his grandson, Tyreik Baldwin, 21, allegedly killed Harvey C. Baldwin, 77, and stuffed him into a chest freezer. A family member who had become worried about the elder Baldwin visited the home on June 30, then called police after Tyreik hit him in the head with a hammer and drove off in the family member’s truck.

Police caught up with Tyreik as he tried to escape and took him into custody.

Oh, THOSE Monkeys

A monkey mystery unfolded near Mesa, Ariz., in early July as drone owner Jesse Sorensan dispatched his device over a facility rumored to house abandoned monkeys. “Hovered above it and took some pictures, and sure enough there’s monkeys in almost all the cages,” said Sorensan. “What are these monkeys doing in the middle of the desert?” Local TV reporters looked into the mystery and found the facility is used for research and breeding for the University of Washington

and the Centers for Disease Control, which were quick to point out that the monkeys have access to air conditioning and veterinary care.

Lacking a Filter

Baseball fans at the Los Angeles Dodgers-Kansas City Royals game in Dodger Stadium on July 8 were treated to some righteous moves on the dance cam by “Rally Granny,” an older fan who capped her performance by flashing her bra at the 40,000-plus spectators. “You don’t see THAT much at a baseball stadium,” deadpanned Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger, who actually missed the spectacle.

On July 6, IRS workers in Ogden, Utah, received a fake bomb from Normand Lariviere, 68, of Olympia, Wash. The U.S. Navy veteran and former civilian defense contractor has been disgruntled with the Department of Defense since his dismissal in the 1990s and has a history of mailing disturbing objects to the IRS to protest paying taxes. In 2016, Lariviere sent one of his fingers, a bullet and a marijuana joint to tax collectors. “Many things I could do,” he threatened. “I’m not going to tip my hand.”

the home of Jorge Jove, 64, of Hialeah, Fla., on July 19. After confronting the workers, Jove went back into his house, came out carrying a gun and began shooting at the AT&T trucks, deflating the tires.

Jove reloaded twice and shot at the trucks’ engines before aiming at Gilberto Ramos, a service worker who was up on a utility pole. Jove was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Law and Order

About a week after police in Minneapolis killed unarmed Justine Ruszczyk after she called to report an assault, orange signs began popping up on streetside poles depicting a jumping police officer with a gun in each hand and the warning, “Twin Cities Police Officers Easily Startled.” Minneapolis police department spokeswoman Sgt. Catherine Michal said on July 24 that public works employees were removing the signs, which were made of metal and resembled traffic signs.

Technology Run Amok

A security robot named Steve suffered a soggy fatal error on July 17 when it tumbled down several steps and into a fountain in Washington, D.C. New to the job, the robot had been patrolling the Washington Harbour area of Georgetown, mapping out its features in an effort to prevent just such an accident. “He looked so happy and healthy,” an area mourner tweeted after the incident. Another ob-

server was less sympathetic. “Robots: 0; humans: 1,” he tweeted.

Least Competent Criminals

A repeat offender came to the end of his career when he and an accomplice tried to burglarize a home in East Macon, Ga., on June 19. As James Robert Young, 41, a 35-time resident in the Bibb County jail, and another man zeroed in on her television, the homeowner woke up and heard them. “When she yelled, the men ran out,” said Sheriff David Davis, and that was when the other suspect turned around and fired his weapon, striking Young in the head, killing him. The accomplice is still at large.

Baaah, Humbug

A local chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in Battle Creek, Mich., butted heads with Western Michigan University last summer after the school rented a 20-goat crew from Munchers on Hooves in Coldwater, Mich., to clean up an overgrown 15-acre woodlot on campus, leaving union workers without jobs. The AFSCME’s grievance cited a collective bargaining agreement with WMU, but university officials countered that “the area is rife with poison ivy and other invasive species,” which are difficult for humans to remove.

MORE COPS NEEDED FOR CITY STREETS On Oct. 12, Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler was asked at a news conference if the number of officers was adequate to properly ensure public safety in the community. He was not subtle in his answer.

“The goal is to create an environment where you don’t have any murders or you have no or a minimal amount of crime,” he said. “That is the goal and we indeed need more police officers to provide that environment for our community.”

Timing has an incredible ability to tell us things that we need to be told. While Fowler was speaking, officers from his department were responding to a shots fired call outside an elementary school on the city’s West Side.

On Oct. 18, Fowler and the city’s fire chief were called to a special meeting of the Syracuse Common Council to discuss staff shortages. Fowler reiterated, “We

certainly need more police officers.”

While he was speaking, a 78-year-old man was injured on Syracuse’s South Side when a bullet grazed his head while he was driving in the area.

Syracuse Police staffing has been a forefront issue since Allen Rufus was shot on Oct. 3. He placed a 911 call prior to the shooting because he felt worried for his safety, but police didn’t respond until after he was shot. Rufus’ family has maintained that the shooting could have possibly been prevented had police responded to his first call.

At the Common Council meeting, Syracuse Police Union president Jeff Piedmonte conceded there weren’t enough officers available the night Rufus was injured to respond to what was initially a low-priority call for harassment. However, Piedmonte stopped short of all-out disagreeing with Rufus’ argument.

“This is an extreme example because somebody did get shot,” Piedmonte said. “But it does show what happens when we’re not available to go quell the harassment.”

When the police union president and Fowler, himself a 28-year-veteran of the police department, stress that Syracuse needs more police officers, it’s difficult to debate that. Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner however, seems to think differently.

Throughout this ordeal, she has maintained that she does not plan to hire any new police officers as long as she remains in office. She argues that the current number of officers is sufficient, and that the city simply doesn’t have the funds to pay for more.

That stance has now put her at odds with the Common Council. The city currently has 420 police officers, with the ability to fund 465 positions. And over the summer, the Common Council included money for 15 additional officers, which brings the total to 480 possible positions, meaning the city has purposely budgeted for 60 more officers than there are right now.

Miner’s reason to not hire more officers is quite sound. The money the Common Council included for those additional positions would come out of the city’s fund balance, and when that money runs out,

those newly hired officers would have to be let go, something Fowler has acknowledged he doesn’t want to happen.

But it’s hard to see that the call for more officers is going to fade any time soon.

While FBI crime data dating back to 1995 shows the rate of violent crimes — homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults — hit a new low in Syracuse last year, 2016 also saw the most homicides, 30, of any year on record. And 2017 doesn’t exactly have a low number, either.

It’s unclear whether Miner’s stubbornness to go beyond a simple “no” is because she genuinely disagrees with her police chief about the number of needed officers, or because her tenure is quickly coming to a close. Whatever the case may be, it is imperative that her successor address this issue and get on the same page as the Common Council to find a solution.

Now is the time to act. Otherwise, we may have more Allen Rufus cases coming. SNT

SURREAL SCARE PACKAGE AT THE REDHOUSE

J

effrey M. Jones’ 70 Scenes of Halloween is set in a shabby suburban living room on Halloween night with a steady stream of kids ringing a loud doorbell. It’s made up of short, itemized bits separated by blackouts, whose numbers are called off by an officious Stage Manager (Donovan Stanfield). But sometimes the numbers come out of order, meaning we’re supposed to tell — from costume changes, among other things — that the scene we’re watching came before the one that preceded it.

Much of this show, running through Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Redhouse Arts Center, is indeed unpredictable. It begins as a domestic melodrama. The suburban couple at the center of the action, Jeff and Joan, has been married for nine years, and things aren’t going well. Simply trying to find some candy corn turns into a shouting match. At this point in the action, serious movie buffs in the audience will remember that Norman Bates munches the same candy in Psycho.

The couple try to watch a television

that broadcasts mostly old movies, along with The Twilight Zone. Before the first act ends, we also realize that four actors on stage are actually playing Jeff and Joan, only in different scenes. Wait, there might actually be four characters instead of two, although it is prudent to withhold credence. Perhaps Jeff and Joan are being menaced by a massive Beast wearing a mask, who either enters through a closet or appears in a window. Ditto for a Witch in a false nose and a pointy hat. Or maybe they aren’t.

Visiting director Jennifer Vellenga, a woman with glowing international credits now on the faculty at Kansas State, makes casting a part of 70 Scenes’ interpretation.

Jeff and Joan are played by two newcomers: Gavin McNicholl, the only Equity player in the show, who indeed has the most to do, and Whitney Andrews, a recent University of Connecticut graduate.

For the Beast and the Witch, Vellenga has chosen Stephfond Brunson and Marguerite Mitchell, two Redhouse regulars and Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) winners with strong local fan bases. So what are we to make of their later taking the roles of Jeff and Joan? Are the Beast and the Witch actual fear-inducing visitors or are they projections from Jeff and Joan?

In interview playwright Jeffrey M. Jones acknowledges that 70 Scenes is at least partly autobiographical, as he drew from his own stale 9-year-old marriage. The main character is, um, named Jeff. Yet the play keeps impersonating a horror thriller, with familiar chords from Bernard Herrmann’s scores for Psycho and Vertigo.

Several times a menacing arm holding a knife thrusts in from a corner, usually a red herring. Really red, however, is the stage blood that drips from slats in

the closet door when it is attacked by a knife-wielder.

Meanwhile, Jeff and Joan’s TV seems to be turned to Turner Movie Classics during fright month. Among the most recognizable clips is Colin Clive’s wail, “It’s alive,” from James Whale’s Frankenstein (1931).

The comedy of 70 Scenes leans more toward absurdism than to funny-ha-ha, while the play owes much to Eugene Ionesco. Jones’ best-known work, 70 Scenes of Halloween was published in 1990 and has been performed sporadically since, often in small, edgy venues like the Redhouse and in college towns.

Playwright Jones was once the manager of the Wooster Group, the New York City experimental theater partially founded by Willem Dafoe. Wooster has long been associated with the kind of post-modernism we see throughout 70 Scenes, as when successive scenes play the same words over again, slightly changed or from a different point of view.

Vellenga’s direction well exploits the intimacy of the Redhouse, which opened in a converted flophouse in 2004. Old hand Tim Brown’s set feels like a B-movie. Vellenga makes all the players look great, especially Gavin McNicholl as Jeff.

McNicholl gives the most varied performance, eliding from snarling madman to angel.

Meanwhile, Marguerite Mitchell and Stephfond Brunson defy their received personae. Charming, almost cuddling in his curtain speech, Brunson morphs into a lethal intruder on the same stage about a half-hour later. SNT

REMEMBERING SYRACUSE PIANIST TONY RIPOSO’S VARIED CAREER

C

onsider the tremendous arc of Tony Riposo’s musical career, from “hocus-pocus dominocus” with the Magic Toy Shop gang to “ring-a-ding-ding” with the Rat Pack.

Thousands of Central New York baby boomers first heard Riposo’s consummate keyboard work in the late 1950s when he portrayed Twinkle, the silent, piano-playing clown on The Magic Toy Shop, a children’s show aired over WHEN-TV (now WTVH-TV).

Riposo, who died Oct. 6 at age 92, was one of the most accomplished professional musicians ever produced in Syracuse, where he grew up on the North Side during the Great Depression. By the time he took the Toy Shop gig in 1955, he was already a mainstay on the city’s nightclub scene, leading small combos at places like Club Candee, the Casablanca, Lorenzo’s, Club Flamingo, Andy’s Inn and Luigi’s.

At those nocturnal hot spots, Riposo was an entertainer. On the daytime Magic Toy Shop show, he was an educator. In a short memoir published in 1996, the TV show’s executive producer, the late Jean Daugherty, reported that Tony himself created the role of Twinkle.

“He requested he be silent vocally,” she recalled, “so children would learn to listen to his music.”

Costumed in overgrown white ears, black triangle eyebrows and widely painted lips, Twinkle sported a Lepre-

chaun-style top hat and a ruffled clown’s collar over a black-and-white tunic.

“Tony wondered what his fellow musicians would think about him working on a ‘kids’ show,’” Daugherty remembered.

Whenever Twinkle was away Daugherty had to hire vacation replacements for the live show, pianists such as Mario DeSantis, Sox Tiffault, Joe Carfagno and Phil Klein. “And Tony found out they appreciated the importance of his role.”

Some of Riposo’s earliest gigs were played with his older brothers: pianist Mike and guitarist Sam, and later with younger brother, Joe. Having started out on accordion at age 5, Riposo and his siblings performed weekends at restaurants.

At 16, he switched to piano and began working with local pros, and by the time he was 18 in 1943, Riposo often accompanied national touring artists at concert halls and theaters.

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he attended Syracuse University, graduated with a degree in composition and continued playing local restaurants and jazz clubs along with radio shows on WFBL and WAGE. When WHEN-TV bought WAGE-AM in 1954, Riposo was hired as its musical

director, paving the way for his role on The Magic Toy Shop. While he worked mornings at WHEN, Riposo performed most nights at places such as Three Rivers Inn north of Liverpool, then owned by Doc Somers.

Sometime around 1956, Tony found himself accompanying the McGuire Sisters there. The three Ohio-born songbirds — Christine, Dorothy and Phyllis — had become instantly famous for their 1954 chart-topper, “Sincerely.” Whenever they played Three Rivers, the sisters requested that Riposo play piano for them. Then in 1957 the sisters scored their second chart-topper with “Sugartime.” Before long, Riposo agreed to go on the road with them.

Around the same time Riposo was hooking up with the McGuires, he and his younger brother, Joe, worked together with the Tony Riposo Orchestra at Three Rivers Inn. The orchestra included cats like tenor saxophonist Sal Nistico, later a driving force in the post-bop movement, and drummer Ronnie Zito, who toured with Bobby Darin.

“We ran that band for about seven years in the 1960s,” recalled Joe, a talented reed player who went on to become director of jazz studies at SU. “It was a great education for everybody because we’d back up singers like Tony Bennett, Frankie Laine, Connie Francis and Nat ‘King’ Cole. Each star usually had a 10-day run, and we’d play three shows a day and dance sets in between the shows.”

On June 9, 1963, after performing with the McGuire Sisters that evening on The Ed Sullivan Show, Tony witnessed a legendary brawl between Frank Sinatra and

Ava Gardner at Trader Vic’s in Manhattan. The incident — at a post-show party hosted by Phyllis McGuire’s boyfriend, Chicago Mafia don Sam Giancana — was chronicled in Kitty Kelley’s unauthorized 1986 biography of Ol’ Blue Eyes, His Way. Besides working for Ed Sullivan, Riposo would go on to conduct television orchestras for program hosts Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas. He also taught briefly at Onondaga Community College.

As the 1960s came to a close, Riposo renewed his commitment to the McGuire Sisters, which necessitated a move to Las Vegas. There he became music director at the Tropicana, and later the Desert Inn, where he enjoyed working with artists such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. In Vegas, Riposo also played and conducted shows at Caesar’s Palace, the Dunes, the Sahara, and the Aladdin. He appeared with the McGuire Sisters and the Washington Symphony Orchestra at President George H.W. Bush’s inaugural.

After a quarter-century in the desert, Riposo returned to the drumlins of Syracuse to be with family and friends and to enjoy its varied golf courses, but he never totally retired from music. He traveled back to Vegas a few times to perform with Phyllis McGuire. who was then singing solo, and he also teamed up with brother Joe for several SRO performances at Liverpool Public Library.

Five years ago, Joe Riposo paid tribute to Dom Bruno’s old Three Rivers Inn with a new composition called “Through a Child’s Eyes.” And a few years before, Joe had written a piece specifically dedicated to Tony, “Song for My Brother.”

“He loved both of those tunes,” Joe reported, “but after he played ‘Song for My Brother’ a few times, he advised me to consult with him before I wrote another tune for him.” Turns out the younger brother had surprised the piano man with the composition’s harmonically challenging chord structure, just as the older brother had often challenged Joe with similar musical contests.

One of the first things Tony Riposo did after his return from Nevada was a simple favor for an old friend, circa 1995. After bandleader Stan Colella had taken sick, Riposo grabbed the baton and conducted Colella’s orchestra at a prestigious Clinton Square concert.

Syracuse musicians cherished the chance to work with Tony Riposo. “He was a brilliant musician and pianist, but beyond that, he was one of the most personable and genuine people I have had the pleasure of knowing,” said saxophonist John Delia.

Drummer Larry Luttinger agreed: “When he led a band, or acted as accompanist, you always played your best.

You knew you were in the presence of a huge talent who had lots of class. He was always ready with a story as well. He was one of the greats of a bygone era, when good music was popular music.” SNT

MINCEMEAT ON HOLIDAY MENU FROM FARMER STREET PANTRY

A

t a time when tastes and trends favor chocolate, banana and coconut cream pie, peanut butter and peanut butter-chocolate pie, Oreo pie, Mississippi mud pie and the eternally popular apple pie, mincemeat pie gets short shrift.

But a local food entrepreneur is out to put mincemeat on the comeback trail and at the center of the dessert table this holiday season and beyond.

Lynne Pascale, owner-operator of Farmer Street Pantry, will be offering 8- and 12-ounce jars of fruit-only mincemeat on Saturdays, starting Nov. 4, at the Central New York Regional Market, 2100 Park St. Find her in the F Shed, Stall 50, through December.

The fruit-only distinction is important, because the mass-produced mincemeat found in grocery stores generally does contain suet or some other form of meat.

Farmer Street Pantry mincemeat is produced at Nelson Farms, Morrisville State College’s small-batch food processing facility, near Cazenovia. Ingredients are apples, apple cider, raisins, brown sugar, orange peel, coconut oil, maple syrup, vinegar, lemon juice, spices and salt. For the current batch of about 500 jars, the maple syrup is from Dutch Hill Farms, Tully; the apple cider is from Beak & Skiff, LaFayette; and the apples are from a grower in Wolcott, Wayne County.

Pascale says she always had “a strong hankering’’ to start her own business. In mincemeat she found a way to meld her

love of food and cooking, her passion for history and local history and her desire to do something entrepreneurial.

She earned an anthropology degree from Syracuse University in 1981 and around the same time started dating Chuck Pascale, who with his brother, Neal, opened Pascale Wine Bar and Restaurant on Hawley Avenue in 1982. The couple later married (and are now divorced), and Lynne served as pastry chef in the restaurant’s early years. She would go on to become a stockbroker and history teacher, but circled back to pastries on and off over the years, as Pascale’s moved downtown and later to Fayetteville.

In 2011, she joined the staff of the Onondaga Historical Association as director of development, and learned about the key role mincemeat played in Syracuse’s manufacturing past. In 1885, she notes, the Merrell-Soule Company began making None Such brand condensed mincemeat in Syracuse. Fresh mincemeat went bad quickly, but Merrell-Soule discovered how to reduce its moisture content to increase shelf life.

The product was embraced by bakers and pie makers and by 1925, Merrell-Soule produced enough mincemeat

to fill 12 million pies annually, Pascale notes. (The Merrell-Soule Company was purchased by the Borden Company in the late 1920s and continued to produce None Such mincemeat in Syracuse until 1981.

None Such is now produced by the J.M. Smucker Company.)

Last year, Pascale left the OHA to launch Farmer Street Pantry, and introduce her mincemeat in time for the holiday baking season. “I saw the way to start my own business through mincemeat,’’ she says with a laugh. “We’re having a renaissance of interest in local foods. Our mission is to reinvigorate the production of mincemeat here in Central New York.’’

While mincemeat pie may not be as popular as, say, pumpkin, apple and pecan pies, it does have its fans. The British have a deep appreciation for mincemeat and “mince pies,’’ and that appreciation extends to Canadian customers she encounters at the market and other events, Pascale says.

And some customers are drawn to the product because it takes them back to a cherished times and place — to Thanksgiving or Christmas at Grandma’s house, for example. “Mincemeat touches a nostalgia or a memory that people have that’s a very personal thing,’’ Pascale says.

“That is so gratifying, when you can give that gift of a memory for someone.’’

Not inclined to make a mincemeat pie?

You can use the mincemeat “right out of the jar,’’ Pascale says, with cheese and crackers, stirred into yogurt, warmed and spooned on pancakes, waffles and oatmeal, as a garnish for a ham or turkey sandwich, as part of a stuffing for squash or poultry — and in baking beyond pies. Think scones and muffins and coffee cakes.

“It’s very versatile,’’ Pascale says.

“One gentleman at a market said he put it on a peanut butter sandwich and it was really good. I love to hear how people are creative with it.’’

Farmer Street Pantry also produces granola, another product with origins in New York state, as well as applesauce made from New York apples and lightly sweetened with New York maple syrup.

acrylics to woodworks, from digital work to metalworks. And as might be expected with a 68-artist show, the pieces are all over the lot.

Photographs, for example, come in various styles, with Matthew Hutchinson’s gritty image depicting a staircase in a run-down house. Steven Eckler’s “The Search for Sea Glass,” meanwhile, offers a panoramic view of a beach scene as a lone figure looks out over massive rock formations and a desolate sky. A third image, “Colors of Music,” by Illya Shoykhet, pumps up red and orange colors in a room containing a turntable and record.

In addition, there are markedly different portraits. Jillian Hagadorn’s self-portrait is intense and contemplative. “Ego,” an oil by James Leach, portrays a male subject’s unclothed upper body and a head decorated with small, purple blocks. It’s up to viewers to interpret those objects and the painting.

The annual On My Own Time exhibit, now in its 44th year, is an atypical show.

Organized by CNY Arts in partnership with the Everson Museum of Art, the project provides exhibition slots for people working at a variety of local workplaces: the city of Syracuse and Onondaga County, United Radio, Lockheed Martin and Boxcar Press, among others. Kyle Buelow. “Stickley Inspired Morris Chair,” by Jason and Erin Newton, communicates a double-barreled homage: to Gustave Stickley, a key figure in the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States, and to William Morris, an Englishman and the movement’s father. He celebrated hand-crafted objects and mourned the effects of the 19th-century Industrial Age. However, he didn’t design the prototype for the chair that bears his name.

Elsewhere, the show presents interpretative pieces by several artists. In “Jazz Man,” Sue Givens cuts out the horn player’s face and lower body, instead emphasizing his trunk, hat and instrument.

“Lonely Forest,” by Shirley Siuta, uses shadows, light and dark underbrush to express moody emotion. And Joyce Yue Qi’s oil depicts a scene at Green Lakes State Park. The painting’s appeal comes from the artist’s take on a familiar landscape.

In addition, “Got To Give It Up,” a digital illustration by Jaleel Campbell, blends diamonds, triangles and circle shapes with an innovative portrayal of a couple. Her right arm extends into cloth, and his tie stretches like a pole into his neck.

Several artworks are simply delightful to look at. Jennifer DeRoberts’ “Ghita”

brings a stream of bold color in an acrylic format. Look for Ossie Edwards’ quilt “African Queen,” and Grace Murray’s painting “Pink Kite.” Julie Hall’s “Balancing Bird II,” a ceramic work, positions a bird atop four nicely decorated objects. Finally, Fred Wellner’s “The Clear-Eyed One,” a metalwork, is worth extended viewing.

The exhibition highlights individual artworks, celebrates the notion of creativity, and continues a project begun four decades ago. And On My Own Time is built on connections: between CNY Arts and the Everson, with people willing to show their artworks and employers willing to take part in the program, between the arts community and a larger audience.

UFO columnist Cheryl Costa’s reference book presents hard data on a controversial subject

By David Armelino Are we alone in the universe? According to UFO researcher and columnist Cheryl Costa, the answer is an emphatic no. And her book, UFO Sightings Desk Reference: United States of America 2001-2015 (paperback, $39.95), released on March 24, has the statistics to back up that claim.

Costa and her wife, Linda Miller Costa, co-authored the 359-page amalgam of bar graphs and Excel sheets over a 16-month period of incessant number crunching. The book encompasses data from all 50 states from 2001 to 2015, which includes the number of sightings by month and year broken down by state and county. Shapes of the UFOs are also prominently featured.

Due to her book’s groundbreaking subject matter, Costa has garnered national media attention from radio stations, science magazines, and even The New York Times.

The task of gathering data from privately funded and civilian-run organizations was tedious, yet Costa was determined to release that information in a way that she said has never been done before.

“This was the compelling notion: Let’s publish the numbers,” Costa said. “Let’s show people just how big this is. And we suspected it was really big.”

Costa officially retired from the work force in February after nearly 10 years in the Air Force and the Navy as an electronic surveillance technician, more than 30 years at Lockheed Martin as a computer security analyst, and several other short-lived jobs.

She now spends her time furthering her research on UFOs and writing a well-trafficked column on the Syracuse New Times website called New York Skies.

Since starting the column in 2012, Costa has spoken at numerous symposiums around the country. Following the release of her book, more doors have been opened to speaking opportunities than ever before.

“We did one in Erie, Pa., and we had an audience there from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio,” Costa said. “So I shared charts with them for their individual states. At these conventions I talk to everybody about everything.”

Continued from previous page Costa is set to speak at the 2018 International UFO Congress in Arizona, which takes place Feb. 14 to 18. The event is the largest UFO conference in the nation, boasting 3,000 to 5,000 attendees per day each year.

Closer to home, Costa will speak at the Center for the Arts, 72 S. Main St., Homer, on Thursday, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. At the free event, she plans to take a break from discussing more recent UFO sightings to instead discuss experiences from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

What first got you interested in UFOs? I saw my first one when I was about 12. In fact, the whole family saw it. We were coming back from a relative’s house, and we saw a big, silvery sphere parked out in a clear, blue sky in a late August afternoon. It was about a week before school started. My mother had my father pull the car over and we sat there for 15 to 20 minutes watching this thing. It was about the size of your fingernail out there in the sky.

My mother explained it could be a lot of things. It might be people from another planet. That got a conversation going with my mother and I over time, and we started getting books from the library and reading stuff with each other. And that was about as far as it went.

I had a few other sighting experiences in my early 20s. I’ve always just been very well read on the topic.

In November 2012, I saw a sidebar story on CNN.com. It said, “UFOs have been declining since the 1980s. Perhaps they were always just an urban legend.”

And that didn’t feel right. So I went out to the Mutual UFO Network website for the first time in my life, and I looked up numbers for a couple of years in the late-1980s right up through about 2000.

And the chart went up like a rocket. And I thought to myself, “What memo didn’t the UFOs get?”

That’s what got me going on the idea of, “Maybe we should start reporting these things.” So I pitched it to a couple of editors at different places, and finally I came over and talked to (former Syracuse New Times editor-in-chief) Larry Dietrich, and he was intrigued because I was going to pretty much tell New York state stories for the most part. That’s how we really got deep into it. It’s been five years.

Where did you learn so much about the topic of UFOs? In 1990 I was recuperating from a medical illness for a time, and I was between apartments. A gentleman I knew at that time, he was taking care of his father who had cancer at another residence. He said, “Hey, if you feed my cat, you can stay at my house.” So I did. And he had first editions on everything that had been written up until that point on UFOs.

So for the few months that I was there recuperating, I read about everything he had. Like I said, I was very well read but didn’t want to follow it. It had a stigma to it. But I think the (article on CNN’s website) in 2012 spoke to me from the standpoint of misinformation. And that’s been talked about a lot over the years.

For over 70 years, there’s been this policy of denial and ridicule. So what does a lawyer do when he or she has an eyewitness to something? They do everything to discredit the witness. So they have this whole thing out there in the public mindset: “Oh, the people who report UFOs are crazy or hoaxers or crackpots or conspiracy theorists.” I hear this all the time, and that’s not the case. Most people I’ve met doing this column want to get it off their chest and there’s no place else to report it.

For your weekly New York Skies blog, where do you get the inspiration for each topic that you write about?

Some weeks, it’s as simple as looking at the report logs, and I see sightings that are interesting, and I’ll write one of them up. There’s a lot of activity lately with the whole disclosure issue. I’m plugged into people who are very close to that, so I’m very knowledgeable on the topic.

There was a poll in 2012 from National Geographic that said 70 percent to 80 percent of the American public think the government is not being clean with us about this stuff, so there’s an audience there for that. I started doing things where I was keeping county statistics. I have to write about something, with New York state being the beat, so to speak. I found out very quickly in the UFO community that I was about the only one reporting statistics. So, we did New York state back in 2015, and a number of UFO investigators in New York state said, “We didn’t know about that pattern or that pattern or the one over there. How did you get this pattern?” I said, “We added county data to the existing material.”

And because of that, my spouse, Linda, and I were talking and we said, “Why don’t we do the whole United States?”

We figured it would take a year. It took 16 months, and that’s how the book came to be. One of the things I pride myself on is being able to show people the statistics and this stuff is happening, it’s real, and you don’t hear about it anyplace else but here.

What compelled you to create the UFO Sightings Desk Reference?

In 2015, we had (compiled statistics for) New York state, and it revealed truths we didn’t know. A good example was that everybody knew about the Lake Erie Effect. Lots of UFO sightings along Lake Erie and the Niagara frontier.

What we didn’t know, until I put county data into the overall sighting data, was that there’s a Lake Ontario Effect. Monroe County has almost as many sightings

for the same period of time as the Erie region does.

So we said, “Wow, this is wild stuff!

What would we see if we did the whole country?” It took 16 months, and there are two more books in the works that take the same data but format it differently.

How will the books be different?

Well, the first book we went with purely magnitudes. We wanted to show you the United States and down to the county level. We have city data. It’s not clean enough yet because people spell cities wrong and it doesn’t sort well. And when you’re manually touching 121,000 records, it gets messy and takes time.

But we’re going to publish a cities directory, and I’m about a quarter of the way through it right now. If we had done it with this book, it would’ve been 700 pages. That was too big. So we’re going to do one that’s laid out similar to the current desk reference, except it will literally drill down to the city level and show what the counts are per city and all the states and counties that have these sightings.

So if a county has 500 sightings in that 15-year period, we’ll be able to break down exactly what the cities were. We’ve already done it for a couple of news organizations that have reached out.

For the other book, investigators have been asking for a good summary of the shapes, and we hope to do the same data, except when we get down to the county level, show them exactly what shapes they had in that 15-year period, and that’s a different format.

Where did the data come from? What resources were used?

The National UFO Reporting Center’s data, which was 60 percent to 70 percent of it, depending upon the state. Then the Mutual UFO Network. They were 30 percent to 40 percent. For the most part, that was the data we used. It was all of their public data.

MUFON was very generous with us because we had to ask them to pull it special for us. NUFORC’s was available right off of the internet. It was just a matter of downloading their website’s data using Excel.

We started at 5 o’clock in the morning on Jan. 1; you wouldn’t believe the bandwidth availability because everybody is sleeping. So we were able to download everything in about three hours. It was amazing.

What has the reaction to your book been like so far? ‍In 70 years, ‍The New York Times ‍has never spoken nicely about UFOs. In fact, they were very stodgy about it. Our book rattled them. In fact, something we heard back from a couple media producers was that we caused some shockwaves in the media industry. Much more than we realized.

So when they decided to do an article about us, they came up and made sure we weren’t sleeping in my mother’s cellar or something. They spent a day with us. The flavor was that this was the first time anyone ever published the numbers. Numbers don’t lie, as they say. That’s why we got the headline, “People Are Seeing UFOs Everywhere, And This Book Proves It.” You can’t dislike a headline like that.

There were people who were seriously interested, and it changed the dialogue of the conversation. Before the book, if I had any kind of an interview usually associated with the column, I usually got a lot of the silly questions: “Are they little green men?” And that was the limit of the conversation.

After this ‍New York Times ‍article came out, a lot of copies (of the book) ended up in a lot of newsrooms because when they started coming to me for an interview, they came to me with serious, solid questions that suggested they had looked at the book.

In terms of disclosure, they’re now asking smart questions for a change. I did get my fair share of people from a TV station asking, “Well, how do you know (the statistics are) credible?” Well, how do you know they’re not? Until someone disproves a witness, an eyewitness account can still get you convicted in any court in this country. We had 120,036 eyewitness accounts, so that was one of the reactions.

But we were getting interview requests from places you wouldn’t expect: ‍Harper’s Magazine‍, a couple of science magazines. V‍ogue.com did a piece on us, and we wondered about that. Then we realized the ‍New York Times ‍article mentioned that our computer we wrote the book on was in our sewing room. So I guess they made that connection.

Have you accomplished what you set out to accomplish with this book?

Yes, we did. What we set out to do was: what, when, where and what shape. That’s all we wanted to know. The focus was we wanted to disprove this notion that had been misinformed for a long time, “Oh, UFOs, they’re gone. They’ve been declining. People don’t believe in them anymore.” And the numbers have been going up. Three waves over 15 years. So we dispelled that myth.

We didn’t expect to discover things.

We didn’t expect to discover the weather patterns associated with this, the latitude patterns, how they affect the shapes. We didn’t expect to find the day of the week these things are more prominent. And there’s stuff we’re still finding.”

You’ve been in contact with some production companies for a TV show.

What kinds of deals have been in the works?

We signed an agreement in a development context, and that’s kind of where it sits. It’s in development, I have corre-

spondents with (Atlas Media Corp.) in New York City. Of course, because we haven’t done a pilot yet or anything like that, these productions can take about 12 to 15 months.

So after we get up to that stage, we’ll probably do a pilot. That’s when they’re going to go out and pitch this thing to prospective networks who might buy it. It’s going to be about UFOs from a modern context instead of all of the great UFO crashes of the last 50 years, because our book of statistics dealt with 21stcentury sightings. We’re looking at that as our hook.

And now the talk is that we’re going to go on the road to some of the hot spots in the United States and visit the people there and maybe camp out and do some sightings.

Recently, the topic of disclosure has come out in the mainstream media.

What does this mean, and what do you see happening from here?

Disclosure: The idea of the government coming clean. I wrote a column some time back about three former presidents who, when they were on Jimmy Kimmel Live, wouldn’t give him a straight answer and nervously laughed it off.

My question is: Why wasn’t 60 Minutes or 20/20 or some news organization asking that question? Why did it have to be a late-night comedian? It’s a conversa-

tion we don’t seem to be able to have. So that’s the big deal in disclosure right now.

Back in January, right before President Obama left office, the CIA had declassified some older UFO documents. That was sort of a smoking gun because here are some of these documents — I’ve got PDFs of these things — they were pulling their hair out about 70 years ago about some of the things that Linda and I were pulling our hair out about when we were doing our book. And they were getting paid, I was getting ridiculed.

The people in the UFO community know this stuff is genuine. There’s enough evidence out there. It’s the general public who haven’t had somebody bless it, so to speak, for some government official to stand up and say, “Yes, this is real.” And that’s what we’re trying to get. We’re trying to get them to be honest and own up to what’s going on.

Most classified material, and I worked with it both in the military and as a civilian contractor for an aerospace firm, is usually declassified in as little as 15 to 30 years; worst case about 50 years. It’s been 70 years on this topic matter. It’s classified higher than the H-bomb. If it’s so ridiculous, why is it still classified like it’s been since the 1950s? It’s wrong. We need to know what’s going on.

(In one of my recent blog posts,) we had Luis Elizondo, the head of a particular

(Department of Defense) unit that collected information on UFOs. And he got on that video and said, “They’re real, guys.”

So that was very, very eye-opening.

People in the UFO community wanted to drink from the fire hose, but for your average person who knew nothing about UFOs, that was about as much disclosure as they could take. I’ve talked to a few people who have seen that clip and they said, “Wow! Up until now I didn’t believe it was real, and now it’s real.”

What do you hope to see change regarding UFOs? There needs to be a national conversation on the topic matter. I had somebody writing something up about us and he referred to me as a UFO enthusiast. And I said, “No, I’m not a UFO enthusiast. I’m trying to out the truth out there.” I think this is an important thing.

I hope that the truth does come out.

There’s a lot of people besides me working on it. We had hoped it would happen at the end of the Obama administration.

There’s a registered lobbyist in D.C., and he was working really hard at it. We don’t know where it’s going to go with the current administration, but there are other efforts afoot.

I’d like to see the dialogue that’s going to lead to disclosure, because for 50 to 70 years, we’ve had this mentality that we’ve been sold a bill of goods. The people

who are interested in this topic are loony toons, hoaxers, all of this stuff. And that is not the case.

When I was first getting ready to write the column, I sat down at a diner and I said, “Hey, I’m getting ready to write a column about UFOs. Anybody here seen one besides me?” And somebody leaned in and said, “Yeah, I saw one.” Somebody came over a little while later and told me, “Oh yeah, my brother saw this during the war.”

With the column, I’ve had people invite me to a backyard barbecue and say, “Hey, we want you to meet our Uncle Ralph who saw this.” We’re finding out that people are handing these things down like family heirlooms.

People have been convinced that if you report one of these things, people are going to label you as a nut. For example, somebody in my family has been harassed because of the visibility that my book has caused. We’ve got to get past that.

Part of the reason we can’t get congressional hearings is because everyone has bought into it. If a congressman stands up and says, “I think we need to have UFO and E.T. presence hearings,” they’re going to label them a kook because it’s been built into the culture over the last 70 years. I want to see that end. If it’s serious enough to be classified higher than the H-bomb, then it’s time for them to come clean with us. SNT
